Opera Universiade Triumphs with “Così fan tutte” The Daegu Opera House formed ‘Opera Universiade’ to foster the creativity of young artists and create a worldclass opera scene with the support of other renown institutions. Also they hope to create a network for young vocalists around the world. Since its inception in 2015, the project has performed Donizetti’s The Love Potion, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and this year’s production, Cosi fan tutte.

Students from Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, and Yeungnam University worked side by side with students from music conservatories in Austria, Italy, Germany, and China. They had been working on the performance since January, practicing under conductor Michael Zlabinger of Opernhaus Zürich, and American director Stephen Carr.

“There is nothing like Opera Universiade, where university students from all over the world can gather to make an opera show,” said Carr and Zlabinger. “It is a very important opportunity for students to meet and communicate with each other.” This year, the ration of Korean to foreign cast members was 1 to 1, making it the largest ratio of international students ever. The roster of international universities included University of Music and Performing arts in Vienna, Conservatorio di Musica “Giuseppe Verdi” di Milano, State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Review
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte premiered in the 18th century, but was denounced by critics as clumsy. But in the 20th century, the opera gained popularity although it is still viewed as highly misogynistic. The English translation literally means “they’re all like that” referring to the play’s two female leads who whimsically fall in love with each other’s fiancés. Regardless, Mozart created an opera buffa that successfully portrays life’s most questionable yet comedic realities of love and relationships.

It is every director’s hope to interpret pieces in creative way and to make them their own. Director Stephen Carr did this and more at the Opera Universiade’s Friday night production. The cast was an outstanding group of fine voices that perfectly suited the roles of young lovers in Naples. Both Lee, Sang-gyu and Kim, Dae-son were vocal powerhouses that completely embodied their roles of Ferrando and Gudlielmo, the soldiers. They brightly complimented the voices of Kim, Hyun-jeong (Fiodiligi) and Arnheiður Eiríksdóttir (Dorabella).

Soprano Yeo, Gyeong-min did an especially exciting take on Despina, and was suitably energetic and amusing, while Yang Yi’s projected the compelling voice of an old philosopher, Don Alfonso. Conductor Michael Zlabinger led the orchestra thoughtfully and idiomatically through the breezy-paced ups and downs of the overture. The stage director created a large, and simple environment within one solid unit, filled with doors and open spaces that allowed the actors to easily move in and out of the set. The first act began with a traditional, 18th century Italian attire and props, but slowly transgressed into the modern era. When Despina revitalized soldiers Gudlielmo and Ferrando, she hysterically used a cardiac resuscitator– perhaps a bit advanced for 1790. The costumes, yet unpredictable, complimented the mood of the story.

Perhaps they were even symbolic, representing how the dichotomy of these relationships are universally understood despite time. The staging, costumes, and conducting were beautifully atmosphere, but were overshadowed by the casts’ magnificent singing. When measured to the quality of this work, 10,000 won is an absolute bargain, and should be a sign to reserve your spot for the next production.

Bluebird Found • Written and photographed by Alex A-Che Translated by Yujeong Lee
Walking through downtown one morning, so early that the streets were empty, I stumbled upon a hidden gem down an inconspicuous alleyway. The hanok walls had been replaced with massive windows that showed an elegant interior with red curtains and all. A piano sat quietly waiting, and a small courtyard beckoned. A mysterious bird silhouette was stationed outside the heavy looking antique door that had not been replaced, with the name 파랑새를 찾아서 , “Finding a Bluebird” written in Korean.

Returning with a Korean friend later that evening, she gushed over the neon bluebird that now blazed and invited us into the dark alley most would otherwise ignore. She said a bluebird had a special meaning in Korea. It was hope and newness. The symbol of a bluebird as the harbinger of happiness is found in many cultures. The song, "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," from Disney's 1946 live-action and animated film "Song of the South" makes reference to "Mr. Bluebird on my shoulder" as a symbol of good cheer. So when we entered and she gushed over the neon pink writing on the wall, I could understand why so many women came in through the night to take pictures with it. The saying on the wall says, a blue bird sits on my shoulder. In that simple phrase, hope is stirred and felt. Speaking with the owner, he revealed that the name came from a book with the same title. The 1908 play, by Maurice Maeterlinck, is about a pair of siblings going out to find a bluebird (a symbol for happiness) and returning empty handed. However once they returned home, they were surprised to see a bluebird right in their house. Happiness is sometimes next to us, right in front of us. We just have to look.

(Mr. Bluebird on my shoulder)"를 즐거운 기분의 상징으로 언급했다. -continued on p14-

Only opened for six months, the frame is still the original hanok. The owner wanted to recreate the feeling of buildings from the early 1900s when Korean buildings just starting to be remodeled and mixed with Western style elements. This hanok is unique, an eclectic space of antiques and modern pieces. My favorite and what sold me on the moment was Abba, the Beatles, and Billy Joel crooning in the background on an old record player. The menu is quite simple and concise. I highly recommend the Hawaiian beers they have, Coco Brown and Big Wave. They have a burger that was so delightfully juicy it didn’t need ketchup, though some spiciness was missing from the actual meat patty itself. The cream penne pasta was delicious as always. Other dishes they have are buffalo wings, honey butter fries, a sausage plate and a corn cheese toast.

We got there when it opened at 6, so we had the place mostly to ourselves to enjoy the music and the atmosphere. Two hours later the place had a line of girls waiting. This is clearly popular with the local young girls. Head over to the “Finding a Bluebird” hanok, it is a sweet unique place for a girls night or a date.

To get there, head over to the renovated Caliente. Walk to the next restaurant over. Look towards your right and you should see that neon bluebird down the alleyway. If you go past the Buddhist temple, you have gone too far. Mi Seong Dang Flat Dumplings A Breathing History in Modern Daegu
• Written and photographed by Sarah Lee Translated by Yujeong Lee
It was 10:30a.m - I flung my arm frantically at the incoming, speeding cab and thank God for Korean drivers - it screeched and stopped right in front of me. I was in a hurry because the place I was heading to is constantly packed with people, like sardines in a can. I dumped my bag and greeted the cab driver in an uncharacteristically, cheerful manner, “Ahjussi, Annyeong Haseyo!” and told the old, wrinkly cab driver the address.
He gave me a half grunt and a quick glare from the rearview mirror. Maybe he saw right through me at the fact that I was annoyed at myself for waking up late this morning and couldn't wash my day old greasy hair. Maybe it’s a Korean cab driver thing. Maybe it’s Maybelline.

I struck a conversation with Mr. Grunt, asking him if he’s been to this half a decade old restaurant. He nodded and the next thing I knew - he went on like a bullet train, talking about how it was one of his favorite spots and all these recipes his mom used to make for him as kid (steamed potatoes with eggplants dipped in soy sauce). A plethora of emotions ran over me, I felt empathetic towards my cab driver. “Would you like to have an early lunch with me?” I gave him my best toothy smile.
He looked at me through the rearview mirror again and shook his head in short intervals, as if he was trying to shake off the horrible idea of having to eat lunch with this weird, unknown ethnic girl. “Ah ni, Gwen-Cha-Na, Gwen-Cha-Na..” He mumbled in that Daegu satoori (accent). “Na Bappa.” - “No, It’s okay, it’s okay.. I’m busy.” Me being the stubborn, peer-pressuring person that I am: I persisted. And he agreed. -continued on p18-

The place we were headed to was famous for it’s ‘납작만 두’ and ‘쫄면’, literal translation: Flat Dumplings and Chewy Noodles. It was a small, old restaurant located right in front of the road called 미성당 납작만두 “Mi Seong Dang Flat Dumplings”. The interior gave off a homey Korean house vibe - it was the epitome of Korean dining and culture with its menu nailed onto the walls and water was self-service. The staff was friendly and they yelled directions and orders at each other. The flat dumplings (small: 3,000 Won, big: 3,500 Won) are mostly just dumpling skin with a teeny bit of glass noodles as its filling, but so satisfactory. It is also a local Daegu food. It’s like ordering a pumpkin pie with 70% crust and just 30% filling. Don’t give me that look please. The flavors were simple but complex at the same time, you have that salty taste from the soy sauce that you pour to your liking, then comes the smoky, fried taste of the dumplings with the perfect chew to it. The Chewy Noodles (4,500 Won) on the other hand was a contrast. The bowl was filled with noodles, shredded cucumbers, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots and a dollop of sweet and spicy, tangy chili sauce. It was refreshing and the combination of the two dishes is simply genius.

We enjoyed our meal in silence for a few minutes before talking to the chef and learned that this year, the restaurant would be 55 years old. My grandfather, my father and now me, have eaten at this place. This restaurant itself is history. "Our meal ended on a sweet note with me bowing goodbye to the cabbie and his was a sliver of a smile." The experience I shared with this ahjussi is one that cannot be found anywhere else; the rawness of the locals most expats, visitors, foreigners don’t see. There is more to that aggressiveness of Daegu locals than meets the eye. It’s a trait embedded into the people of Daegu, that’s what makes Daegu distinctive.

Library Aficionados How to Access Daegu's Many Public Libraries • Written and Photographed by Kimberly Williams Translated by Yujeong Lee
The next time you’re on YouTube, search “Madison Loves Books.” Spoiler Alert, it features a little girl who absolutely adores books. “The world needs books!”, she yells with excitement. “What would the world be like without books?” She continues, “They fuel our mind like cars and gas, the cars can’t go without gas- our brains can’t go without books.” After a heartfelt monologue about the importance of books, she paints a vivid picture, “everything was opened up! Colors came, inventors were born, inventions were made- the world was a better place! And that all started with books.” I couldn’t agree more. Great news for Library Aficionados, Daegu has many! This is a recap of the few I visited and additional information for those interested in obtaining Library Service Membership.

This was the first library I visited. Much like any other traditional library, the Jungang Library was filled with people who appeared to be focused on their studies. Reading Rooms and Lecture Rooms are located throughout the building, and there’s also a book café for a more relaxed vibe. I was particularly interested in the gender-specific study rooms which I’m guessing were created to promote focus. For those of us who are easily distracted by the other gender (guilty!) I really liked the concept. I was reminded of my university days, surrounded by students cramming before an exam. A Humanities Collection Room and International Information Center provide resources for foreigners, with a wide variety of multi-lingual volumes. Centrally located- it is the perfect place to transition from ‘work hard’ to ‘play hard’. Sounds like my type of Saturday!

While it is among the older of the libraries I visited, I was pleased with the atmosphere of quiet solitude. (I didn’t hear above a whisper the entire time) -continued on p22-

Surviving That Yellow Dust
Yellow dust, or hwangsa as it is called in Korea, is inhalable particles that are a mixture of pollutants and sand. Naturally occurring seasonal flora particles like pollen are also added to the mix, causing issues for those with seasonal allergies or severe asthma. In early spring, yellow dust storms develop in Mongolia, Kazakhstan and northern China, and high-speed winds carry it throughout China into the Korean peninsula. The dust doesn’t stop there, as winds can carry these dust clouds all the way to the Americas to the point of affecting visibility. The rise of the deforestation and industrial pollutants has made this yearly occurrence a health crisis especially to those with weakened immune systems.

Korea ranked 173rd out of 180 for air quality in Yale University's latest 180-country Environmental Performance Index. Carcinogens as well as viruses, bacteria, fungi, pesticides, antibiotics, asbestos, herbicides, plastic ingredients, combustion products as well as hormone mimicking phthalates have been found in these dust storms worldwide. Though scientists have known that intercontinental dust storms can ferry bacteria and viruses, microbiologist Dale W. Griffin with the USGS in St. Petersburg said, "most people had assumed that the [sun's] ultraviolet light would sterilize these clouds. We now find that isn't true."

Last year, teams of scientists sponsored by NASA and Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research did a six-week project that showed that the dust pollutants also originated from the peninsula itself. "By being able to go over the adjacent water and then over the [Korean] peninsula, we can begin to do a much easier job of separating external influences from internal sources in the -continued on p26-

Pollutants Levels: Air Korea, a website with real-time information, gives us the current levels. You can find them at www.airkorea.or.kr/eng/real/realTime. Phone Apps like Yellow Dust are the most non-Korean friendly, though I stick with Air Korea: 우리동네 대기질 오염물질 수준 : 실시간 정보가 있는 웹사이트 에어 코리아는 현재의 오염수준을 알려준다. www.airkorea.or.kr/eng/real/ realTim에서 내용을 찾아볼 수 있으며 황사(Yellow Dust)와 같 은 앱은 외국인에게 가장 적절하지만 필자는 여전히 에어코리아 의 ‘우리동네 대기질’을 사용하고 있다. Medicine: Ahn Kang-mo, a pediatrician at Samsung Medical Center, offers us some advice. To relieve congestion in the nasal mucosa, vasoconstrictor nasal sprays can be used. Cromolyn sodium sprays can be used for prevention. Immune-modulator injections can also be used but require a long-term treatment of 3-5 years.
Clothes need to be washed immediately after returning from work and school and avoid walking in the rain. Keeping the air quality clean indoors is also important, and to those who are super-sensitive, make sure to cover any cracks in windows and doors. Masks: Masks will help as long as they are the correct one. Do not use cloth masks as they lose their potency once washed. Yellow dust masks (황사마스크) are available in many shapes, sizes, and filter grades across Korea. They can be found at pharmacies or bought in bulk on Gmarket or Coupang. The US-based National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) gives masks the N95 rating for being able to filter out 95% of particulate matter. KF (Korea Filter) masks more closely adhere with the European Standard rating system. KF80 masks are equivalent to P1 filtration and filter out 80% of particulate matter. KF94 masks are equivalent to P2 filtration and filter out 94% of particulate matter. KF99 masks are equivalent to P3 filtration and filter out 99% of particulate matter.
Stay Clean: Wash your face and hands and brush your teeth as frequently as possible and drink plenty of water to prevent skin dehydration and excrete impurities from the body. Eat plenty of healthy food with immune boosting vitamins. If possible, avoid wearing contact lenses and opt for glasses instead.

Daegu, the City to Remember Diary of a Foreign University Student
• Written by Icabalzeta Nohemí Photos by Libardo Gutiérrez Translated by Yujeong Lee
It’s Friday and I am sitting in front my computer, while I write this article, I am planning my night visit to a nice place in Daegu. First, I need to decide where I want to go. I came to South Korea about seven months ago. Transportation is very easy and also cheap here, probably the most economic part in this interesting country. I can travel by bus, subway and train. I live in Gyeongsan, and I am studying for a Master’s at Yeungnam University. I am Latin-American, specifically from Nicaragua, “the land of lakes and volcanoes”. My mother said to me recently while we were talking on Facebook: “In the future you will tell your children about your experiences there”. It is incredible to think about that future and also the past. It is a kind of anachronism, an alteration of a chronological order in my mind. In fact,

when I was a girl I never imagined staying in the Asiatic continent. But fortunately I am here enjoying Daegu, and all the things that this metropolitan city can offer. When I talk with my family and friends in Nicaragua, the frequent question they ask to me is: How is South Korea? And, in fact, the first word I think about is SECURITY, and additionally its postmodern buildings, with its industries recognized worldwide like Samsung, LG, Hyundai and Kia. A friend in Nicaragua, before I came here, said to me, “Take many pictures, I want to know if South Korea is like The Jetsons!” This was a 1980’s cartoon based in the highlytechnological future. The Jetsons are in the year 2062, they live in houses suspended in the air by means of enormous

I need to come back in 45 years to confirm this event. Meanwhile, I can send some pictures to my Nicaraguan friend. Living in Daegu is a good experience, as a foreign student I can learn many issues related with this country, not only its culture, but also about the daily life of its inhabitants. I like Korean people, although the majority of them always are so busy, they are so kind. There are many things to learn about this culture, too many positive aspects to put into practice. Korean people believe so much in friendship and family through respecting each other.

All these experiences are so essential to complement my deep vision related to my studies about South Korean History & Development, taking into consideration the Rural Development Program Saemaul Undong. It has been defined by the United Nations as an exemplary model of rural development around the world. It is an applicable model in other developing countries. Many countries have adopted their own models of rural development programs; and sometimes South Korean programs partner with them in order to help. Not only tourists are attracted to Korea, but also academics. -continued on p30-

As I finish reflecting over these things, I remember that it is Friday again. Friday is the perfect day to me, to go out alone or accompanied. I usually prefer alone for many reasons, I can enjoy carefully observing things. I have all the time to myself to reflect. It is good to take time to meditate, even further away from your environment is better.

Daegu, the City to Remember
In fact, it is incredible everything that can happen in only seven months. I consider that now I think so differently. Although it sounds naive, before I had only heard that people had to travel to obtain a mindset change, and that is very true. There are many things more to say but I am going to finish this article because right now I have to go recharge my transportation card before I take the subway to another adventure inside the metropolitan city of Daegu. I will have more experiences to remember and to tell my family, friends and my future children.

Samcheok and Haesindang Park
A Weekend to Remember • Written and Photographed by Lindsay Mickles http://theneverendingwanderlust.com Translated by Yujeong Lee
A couple years ago, a friend and I took a short weekend trip to Samcheok. Our primary goals were to take a ride on the the Yonghwa Ocean Railbike and (of course) pay a visit to Haesindang Park! We also intended to visit a cave or two, but the local bus schedule was very challenging (to say the least) and we simply didn't have enough time! We decided to leave Daegu at 8:30am on the Saturday morning. The trip took about 4.5 hours and we arrived in Samcheok just in time to seek out a motel and find the main bus stop in-town. We chose Star Motel (it was the first one we looked at) and were satisfied with the room and rate. We shared a standard room for 60k won and had

a good size bed and all the amenities. You may be able to find cheaper elsewhere, but we were happy with it and wanted to get started on the fun stuff! We found our bus stop and headed to our first destination: Haesindang Park (also known as the Penis Park). This is a very popular destination for foreigners and locals alike and these giggle-inducing sculptures are nestled among some gorgeous scenery! You may be wondering Why in the hell is there such a thing as a Penis Park? Well, there is a bit of interesting history behind it. The legend goes: a young woman was
left waiting on a rock each day as her lover went to work. She had to stay there and wait for him until he returned for her. One day a storm rolled in, he was unable to save her, and she drowned. Shortly thereafter, the local fisherman's catch kept getting smaller and smaller. Being a fishing village, this was of great concern to the locals and they weren't sure how to remedy the situation. One day, a fisherman noticed the fish coming back after he relieved himself into the water. The news spread quickly and it was believed that the fish came back because the virgin beheld the man's penis. The townspeople then built phallic sculptures to pay respect to the woman. The fish continued coming back and the community has had plenty of fish ever since.

TIP: Haesindang Park is relatively easy to get to. You can
hop on bus #24 from Samcheok and get off at the park. There are 2 entrances and I recommend getting off at the first! 3k won entry fee! BE AWARE: The buses are VERY infrequent, so you may be waiting a while to get picked up! The next day, we took a trip on the Yonghwa Ocean Railbike. Not fully trusting the bus schedule, we spent A TON on a taxi to get out to the railbike depot. Of course, we went to the WRONG location haha. There are 2 places you can start from and we went to the wrong one (awesome...). The ticket agent, upon realizing that we didn't have a car to drive to the other place, made a few calls and switched our tickets out. 38
Samcheok and Haesindang Park
Though the weather was overcast, the railbike tour was lovely. It required very little effort on our part, and was super relaxing! I hear there are some nice places to take a railbike in the autumn and I'll be sure to check it out if I can!
TIP: Bus #24 also will take you to the railbike....Make sure you arrive at the correct starting point. Tickets are 12k won for a 2-seater and the trip lasts about 1hr 45min. You will stop part of the way through for refreshments and a bathroom break. This MAY NOT be suitable for young kids (who are afraid of the dark) or for those who have difficulty with strobe/flashing lights.
http://www.daegucompass.com
After taking the railbike, we headed back to Samcheok to figure out how we were going to get home. Though Samcheok isn't super-close to Daegu, it isn't a bad weekend trip! If you do visit Samcheok--drive if you can. If you can't drive and must rely on public transport--plan

ahead to make sure you do everything you want!! Cheongdo An Unexpected Day Trip from Daegu
• Written and Photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva http://memoriesnotmaterialthings.com Translated by Yujeong Lee
I love wine. I mean really, who doesn’t? So, when I discovered a winery on the outskirts of Daegu I had to try it. My expectations were low though, as I’ve toured some of the best wineries in the world from Marlborough, New Zealand to Stellenbosch, South Africa. Still, I’m always seeking out a new adventure. So one unplanned Saturday, I set off for a day trip to Cheongdo. What ensued was a very spontaneous but fun afternoon tasting persimmon wine and watching bull fighting. Definitely worth the half hour journey from Dongdaegu train station.

Gam Wine Tunnel
If you have been in Korea long, especially during the Autumn, then you’ve probably come across a Gam tree laden with persimmons. Deep blood orange in color, the fruit either looks like a squashed tomato or a lopsided acorn, depending on the variety. Although persimmons are common throughout the country, Cheongdo is well-known for producing a squat, round, seedless variety called the Cheongdo bansi. These persimmons have a higher sugar content than other species, which makes it a natural choice for wine production.
http://www.daegucompass.com
Whilst the fruit was brought to Korea over 1,000 years ago from China, the use of persimmons in wine-making has a relatively short history. In fact, Cheongdo Gam Wine touts itself as the first producer in the world to commercially make wine from persimmons, which only first hit the markets in March 2004. Using the traditional production process, the local persimmons are first crushed and then pressed before a special enzyme is added to the fermenting process. The alcohol content then is naturally produced through the aging process which takes place in the disused railway tunnel. The tunnel was completed in 1904, but abandoned in 1937. Cheongdo Gam Wine reinforced the ceiling of the tunnel with red clay bricks and converted it into an aging facility in 2006. The tunnel now stays at a constant 15 degrees Celsius and has 60-70% humidity which provides perfect conditions for fermenting persimmon wine. It is now known at the Gam Wine Tunnel. The tunnel itself is about 1,000metres long and houses thousands of bottles. On entering the tunnel you will find a small store where you can purchase some of the local wine and other products. Further in there is picnic table style setting and a small cafe where you can conduct your wine tasting. The far end of the tunnel requires an entrance fee of 2,000W. In this area, you can view a small art gallery and some of the bottles of wine aging on racks. -continued on p42-

There are three wines available to taste. The Regular Gamgrin is a dry white wine with a gold colour and rich tannin. The Special Gamgrin is aged for more than four years and is a sweet full bodied wine with a dark orange colour. Interestingly, they also produce an Ice Wine, which is akin to a dessert wine with notes of honey. The Ice Wine was very pricey at 20,000W per glass to taste (compared to the others at 4,000W), but was delicious. Whilst the three varieties I tasted were not the best I have ever had, I enjoyed trying a very unique wine that I couldn’t get anywhere else in the world.

Bull Fighting
Not far from the wine tunnel you’ll find the Cheongdo Bull Fighting Arena. It wasn’t my intent to watch bullfighting on a Saturday afternoon, but as I was in the area, I thought I’d give it a go. Admittedly, I was concerned about seeing a bloody battle between two 600kg beasts and usually avoid any type of event that would be cruel to animals. Fortunately, Korean bullfighting has nothing in common with the violent spectacles that take place in Spain. There are no matadors and no goring. The animals aren’t tormented or killed. In fact, the whole show is rather sedate and dare I say comical. The competition starts with the judges entering the bovine battleground, bowing to the
DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2017
audience and taking their places. Then the two bulls are lead into the ring by their trainers. Some jeering from the handlers ensues whilst they try to get the bulls to lock horns. Once engaged, the battle commences. The two bulls then simply butt heads for a while and use their force to push each other around. There is a bit of snorting and scraping of the dirt, but not the fierce clash I’d expected. The match is over when one of the combatants surrenders or simply turns and lumbers off.

In the last match we watched, the bulls were disinterested in fighting and took several minutes to interlock horns. However, as soon as they engaged, they unlocked again and stood looking at each other passively and occasionally licking each other. The crowd chuckled. Eventually, they did manage a tame bout that lasted a few minutes. To make the viewing more interesting, you can place small bets. The minimum is just 100W and the maximum is 100,000W. It’s free to enter and there is also a museum that displays the history of bullfighting in the region next door. So, if you are looking for a unique day out of town, then I’d highly recommend a jaunt to Cheongdo.

Compass Connoisseur Check out these great restaurants, as recommended by The Daegu Compass’ Editor-in-Chief!
Downtown
옥상 therooftop
One of the best places to get European food in Daegu, 옥상 therooftop has made quite a name for itself. You can easily find it above What? BBQ restaurant on meat street. The owner and chef, Rose Kyunghwa Kim, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia and has a menu packed with fantastic dishes. From the cheese-stuffed meatballs, to the Caesar’s salad, not to mention the fantastic chicken schnitzel, the menu has plenty to offer at a great price. Hours: 12:00-01:00 / Break 15:30-17:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-213-7611 Address: 중구 동성로3길 32-43 3F
La Luce
One of the best places for a date, birthday, or special meal, La Luce delivers high quality mediterranean meals for the midrange foodie. Their menu includes a wide variety of Western dishes, my personal favorites being the flatbread and mousakka. The ambiance is slightly upscale, the menu is diverse, and their set meals are to die for. La Luce is my go-to place for my birthday celebrations and it has never disappointed. Hours: 12:00-22:00 / Break 15:30-17:30 / Closed Sundays & Holidays Tel: 053-606-0733 Address: 대구시 중구 동덕로 141 2F
Brewer Bros
The best fish and chips in Daegu can be found at Brewer Bros, and the portion sizes are massive. You can get a medium size portion for 12,000 or a large for 15,000. If you’re not in the mood for fish, there are a few other tasty options to choose from, including sausages and chips or fried shrimp and chips - both are solid dishes as well. Brewer Bros also offers a good selection of craft beers on tap, at a very reasonable price. Hours: Sun-Thurs 17:00-01:00 / Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 Tel: 010-3268-4269 Address: 대구 중구 종로 29
EtOH’s Drafthouse EtOH’s is your one-stop-shop for American-style pizza and a wide selection of craft beer. The owner works very hard to deliver great food and welcoming atmosphere - and he’s succeeded in making EtOH’s one of the most popular places to grab a bite and a pint on the weekends. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu 16:00-01:00 / Fri 16:00-02:00 / Sat 15:00-02:00 / Sun 15:00-01:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-211-9385 Address: 대구시 중구 동성로3길 12-3 2F
I'm Paul
Hands-down my favorite dessert cafe in Daegu. The owner of this lovely cafe fell in love with New York style desserts while studying at Parson’s School of Design. The coffee, aide, and tea on offer perfectly complement the gorgeous desserts she makes. You can even order entire cakes for special occasions. There’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend, though I personally lean towards the Profiterole cake and anything she makes with chocolate!
Schoron
My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. The place is small, so you might have to wait, but it is my favorite place to go for brunch downtown.

Beomeo G’Day Cafe
I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! The dish includes a sunnyside-up egg, two lovely pieces of toast, a small salad, and mushrooms in a cheese-cream sauce - to die for! I love to head to G’Day on a Saturday or Sunday, with my laptop in-tow. I can enjoy a great brunch, wonderful coffee (and tea), and get some writing done in a great, relaxed atmosphere.
Sinmae Taj Mahal
One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. To find the restaurant, take exit 5 from Sinmae station and go straight until you see Dunkin Donuts (it’s on the 2nd floor of that building). The restaurant is foreigner-friendly and they will cater the spice level to your needs. The dishes are well-priced and there are plenty of vegetarian and halal options as well.
Nam-gu HamiMami
The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. They serve western-style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort foods. HamiMami’s homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, and sausages are among the best in the city and their bread is delivered fresh daily. Head to HamiMami’s when you’re feeling a little homesick and let them spoil you! Hours: 08:00-21:00 / Weekday break 15:00-17:00 / Closed Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Address: 대구시 남구 삼정길 87
Sangin and Jincheon
This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! Oh - I’ve never seen anyone pay by card, so it’d be best to take cash with you.
Suseong Lake La Salud
I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. I usually go for the house burger, but you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu! Definitely go for the set, which includes a drink and side. The restaurant is easy to find and the staff is super-friendly!

Bongsan Cultural Street
77, Bongsanmunhwa-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea
Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

Bangcheon Market & Kim Kwang-suk Memorial Mural Road
Dalgubeol-daero 450-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea
The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73
Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.
AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.
District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
