Hi Daegu,

We are now fully into summer, but what a great one it is! What better goal to set for yourself this summer than to get fit? We thought we’d send out one of Daegu’s most loyal distance runners to report back on what kind of running trails he could find along the new monorail line (p. 16). Turns out there’s an abundance of wonderful running and bike paths scattered along the route of Line 3, and all mere steps away from the stations. Why not lace up those shoes tomorrow and go for a nice jog? Man oh man, do we like a great place to relax with a big plateful of grub! Check out our review of Lupin Industrial Gastro Pub (p. 8) tucked away among the streets downtown. Moody ambiance and super reasonable drinks will have you coming back for more. After all, their sign does caution: “Tonight, you will be addicted to Lupin.”

Lupin Industrial Gastro Pub • Written by Katy Babiarz, Photos by Ivan Broida

As Typhoon Chan-hom was approaching Daegu, the Daegu Compass staff and I braved the storm and headed downtown to check out a new pub in Daegu. Lupin (루팡), pronounce ‘Lou Pang”, is a new hotspot located right on the edge of the downtown Daegu area! Manager and Chef Park JinTaek (박진택) says that the place got its unique name from ‘Arsene Lupin, a gentleman burglar’, who is a fictional thief from a book series written by Maurice Leblanc. Lupin, the gentleman burglar pub, hopes to steal your hearts too by making you fall in love with the food, drinks, and atmosphere. Walking inside of Lupin definitely steals you away to a secret European style pub with chain lighting features, brick walls inlaid with steel rods, and the sound of industrial club music playing through the stereo. The soju faucet lights enhance the grungy feeling of the pub, as well! Plus, the fact that it’s down a small alley adds even more to this mysterious club feeling. (More about the alley later!) Besides the vibrant atmosphere, Lupin has some decent food and drinks to offer. Pizzas, stews, salads, samplers, and wings are a few of the snacks (안주) to munch on! We tested out the Lupin Combination Pizza (17,800w), the Hawaiian Combo (18,800w), and the Wings with fries (12,800w). All three were good, but the Combo Pizza and Hawaiian Combo really stood out. The thin, but soft crust pizza was loaded with various toppings such as onions, pepperoni, black olives, pork, and cheese! As for the Hawaiian Combo, it had one big skewer of oranges, pineapples, onions, tomatoes, and a few huge prawns. The skewer was rested on top of a mound of seasoned fries and a variety of sausages.

8

Lupin Industrial Gastro Pub

The wing dish came served with eight small wings and a pile of perfectly seasoned fries. The ‘sweet and spicy chili’ sauce and the BBQ sauce are a great match for the fries! There are also drinks that complement the food. We got to enjoy the Beer Sampler (11,900w), which came served on a cool wire rack. Upon the bridge of beers were four 200ml glasses of various Ales (Golden, Pale, and White) and a Stout (Oatmeal). Plus, they have these cool soju drinks, called So-Tonics (쏘토닉 6,900w) made from soju, tonic water, and various fruits and flavorings, such as grape and mango. We didn’t get to try them, but they looked really interesting. We didn’t get to try the Fruit Smoothie Beer (6,900s) either, but I will definitely be going back to check them out later on! For those of you who are looking for a great place to relax in the afternoons or grab a bite after work, Lupin opens up at 2pm every day! Eventhough you can swing by at 2, they don’t close until 2am on the weekdays, and 3am on Fridays and Saturday nights! If the relaxed pub isn’t quite your thing, then stop by later in the night for a different vibe!

Lupin is located just a 1-2 minute walk from the downtown fire station (삼덕소방서). Once you’re out of the taxi, take the street between the 7-11 and the fire station. Go past the street that takes you to the usual booze spots for foreigners. BUT don’t go too far! You will see a very small alley on your right within 30 seconds or so after the path to Booze Way. On your way home from work, swing by and order a pizza to go. While you’re sitting at the bar waiting for the pizza to be freshly baked, grab a drink or two and let Lupin steal your stress away!

Yeongcheon Korea’s City Among the Stars • Written by Luke Bunting, Photos by Luke Bunting and Sonny Sithonnorath, Translated by Yujeong Lee

Situated a short 35-minute train ride from Daegu, the town of Yeongcheon exists in relative obscurity compared to its larger neighbors. Not even my Korean friends were able to help me find it on a map after receiving my school placement here, creating a few moments of panic that I was going to be living in a onephone-store town before Google helped assuage my fears. After a year of living in the city with a Korean homestay, the small town’s unique and simple charm has earned it a special place in my heart, having a distinct personality well worth exploring for those seeking an escape from the big-city bustle.

(Korean BBQ) restaurant two streets south of the city hall and next to the Tudari. The owner has two children studying and working in the States, and enjoys talking to foreigners who come through.

As with many Korean cities, Yeongcheon’s main attractions center upon eating and hiking. Perhaps the city’s most famous culinary contribution is Samseong Mandu (삼성꾼만두): dumplings filled with noodles, egg, and herbs all within a crispy fried shell. The city’s downtown boasts two restaurants serving the delicious twist on a Korean staple, with the one closer to the city’s war memorial having been featured on multiple reality shows, including Running Man. Korean BBQ fans will also find great service and food at the 솥단지 삼겹살

Yeongcheon: Korea’s City Among the Stars

For the more adventurous eater, the city is also home to famous 영화 식당 (YeongHwa beef restaurant). Located right next to Yeongcheon Bus Terminal, the eatery’s raw beef is so well-regarded that it even opened a branch in Seoul after so many traveled from the city to experience the delectable dish.

Those seeking a moderate hike with beautiful views will find plenty to enjoy at Bohyeonsan mountain, home to Korea’s largest astronomical observatory and the telescope on the back of the 10,000 won note. Located in the northern part of the city, traveling to the moun-

While you may not enter into the observatory, the view from the top offers glimpses of not only northern and downtown Yeongcheon, but also cities as far away as Gyeongju, Pohang, and parts of Daegu and Hayang on very clear days. Make sure to catch the sunset on the clearing past the observatory for some amazing pictures and unforgettable sights.

While lacking in the amount of historical importance found in neighboring Daegu and Gyeongju, Yeongcheon’s main historical site of Imgo-Seowon provides a unique place for exploring. Originally built in 1553 during the Joseon dynasty, it served as both an important library and college for the area. Housing a 500 year old gingko tree, as well as two national treasures (a portrait of Jeong Mong-ju and the collection of his books), it remains a popular tourist spot for Koreans, and provides vantage points for taking great pictures of Yeongcheon’s rural landscapes. Travel to this spot is easiest with a car, although taxis from downtown will also take you there.

All of these great attractions provide the perfect itinerary for a short weekend trip away from the big city. Few foreigners currently travel to Yeongcheon, but its friendly, easy-going people and distinct Korean culture make each interaction a pleasure. Plans to build more tourist-centric areas over the next few years all but guarantee that the city’s stock will continue to rise as people seek the relaxing rural experience. Make sure to be ahead of the curve, and come explore this hidden gem of Gyeonsangbuk-do.

Running Through The City New Monorail Opens Exciting Running Paths Around Daegu • Written by Adrian Jue, Photographed by Brian M. Van Hise, Translated by Yujeong Lee

Since having opened to the public in mid-April, Daegu’s new monorail has been operating at near full capacity with curious passengers navigating the route that they don’t normally go. During opening weekend, many families used the line as an outing to explore a new area. Even though people may reside in Daegu, if they have no reason to venture into another neighborhood, many won’t. With this new line, the hope is to bridge communities together and lower the commute time. In terms of growth potential, there is a plan to extend the line to the Daegu Art Museum or even to the new Samsung baseball stadium, which is slated to open in 2016.

I have been anticipating the monorail’s opening date for quite some time, and it does not disappointment. As an outdoor enthusiast, I often search for places where I can run in the city. The new Line 3 monorail gives you a tour of some great places to run in Daegu. I went on it to see what it can offer, and it’s pretty! Living in Suseong-gu, I find it easy to use the monorail to start my runs near the stations.

How To Treat Children’s Chronic Abdominal Pain

Step 1 → What age does chronic abdominal pain occur? If a 4~16-year-old child feels abdominal pain for longer than one month, more than three times a month, and if it interrupts normal life, it could be ‘Chronic Abdominal Pain for Children’. This is not a disease, but just a symptom that abdominal pain happens chronically. So it is important to find the reason of it and treat it immediately.

Written by Hwang Jin-bok, Photos by Hyosung Hospital, Translated by Yujeong Lee

Abdominal pain is a common symptom for young children. However, if it lasts more than a month, parents would feel nervous, and bring their children to a clinic or use folk remedies. It usually doesn’t work and even makes children suffer from long-term pain. In this event, you need to understand a stepwise approach for children’s chronic abdominal pain.

Step 2 → How often does the pain occur? 15~20% of elementary school students show symptoms, which means such abdominal pain is very common. You need to know that many other children also have it, not only one’s own child.

20

How To Treat Children’s Chronic Abdominal Pain

http://www.daegucompass.com

Step 3 → What is the reason for chronic abdominal pain? 90% of chronic abdominal pain doesn’t have a specific reason or sickness behind it, even though children may have gotten through thorough tests such as blood, urine or feces, ultrasonography, x-ray and endoscope exams. In this case, they get better as time goes by, which means the pain is ‘functional pain’ which is constitutional or from mental problems. The remaining 10% of pain is ‘organic’ which comes from ulcers, kidney disease, tumors, liver failure, abdominal migraines or abdominal epilepsy.

Step 4 → What is the type of pain symptoms can be expected? There are three types of pain associated with this illness: 1) Upper Abdominal Pain: this pain is located above a belly button and comes with nausea, vomit, sickness, frequent burps, loss of appetite, which is related to the gastrointestinal tract (throat, stomach and duodenum) 2) Lower Abdominal Pain: this pain is located below a belly button and comes with frequent diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite. 3) Spasmodic Abdominal Pain: This happens near the belly button and comes with a cold sweat and vomit.

Step 5 → How to distinguish the functional pain and organic pain? This is the most difficult part for parents. In the case of functional pain, it doesn’t need special treatment, but organic pain needs immediate test and treatments. Therefore, parents need to know the symptoms of organic pain and they are called ‘red flag symptoms’ which are as follows:

△ pain in the middle of the night △when the level and

amoung of pain gets worse △ pain with vomit and diarrhea △ pain with a cold sweat, pale face and low activity △ losing appetite, energy and weight △ pain with temperature △ pain at a specific part △anemia without reasons or an abscess near anus If you find these symptoms from your child, take him/ her to a doctor immediately.

However, if the pain is only a bearable one, you can keep an eye on it for a while. The parents of children in this case show too much interest to their children which causes stress and pressure for them. It can also bring about abdominal pain. When one is convinced that the child’s pain is bearable, monitor it for a while. Most of these cases tend to improve.

Gaelic Football Takes Off in Daegu

In Daegu, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities that people can undertake and one that is becoming very popular among the Daegu community is the Irish sport of Gaelic Football. Gaelic Football is a form of football that comes from traditional Irish games and is played with a round ball that can be kicked, carried, bounced, hand passed and soloed (kicking the ball up to one’s self.). It has been described as a mix of Soccer, Rugby, and Basketball, and offers an alternative for both men and women looking to play a field sport in Daegu. Founded in 2007, the Daegu Fianna Gaelic Football Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years,

24

acquitting itself very well on the playing field. The club fields both men’s and women’s teams and plays in a variety of different competitions. The main competition is the Korean Gaelic League, where the club plays against teams from Seoul and Busan, all of whom take turns in hosting tournaments. They also take part in the North Asian Gaelic Games against teams from China and Japan as well as participating in other smaller competitions. In the early years the team struggled to attract players, but in recent years there has been a huge upsurge in popularity. For the first time ever, the club has fielded two men’s teams and two ladies’ teams in the Korean Gaelic League, a huge achievement for the club.

This year promises to be a momentous year for the Fianna. For the first time ever the club is hoping to send a team abroad to the Asian Gaelic Games, an event that attracts teams from all over Asia, and which will be held in Shanghai in October. The club is embarking on a major fund raising campaign for the trip and will host many fun and exciting events in the coming months. We pride ourselves on promoting the social part of the club with many team social events which gives players, both new and old, the opportunity to get to know each other. The club’s surge in popularity and reputation has seen a rise in non-Irish players taking up the game. Players from England, USA, Canada, Australia, Korea and South Africa have all donned the Daegu Fianna jersey this year. Aside from these activities, we also arrange a number of different events which help to strengthen the bond between teammates and have fun at the same time. The club has gained a reputation for being welcoming to new players and making people feel like a part of the group. There is no doubt that the club serves a vital role in expat life here in Daegu. On the playing field, the recent playing season began on April 25th in Busan, where the teams performed admirably against clubs with far greater resources and with greater access to players. The second tournament was held here in Daegu on May 30th, and was a great success. It was a huge occasion for the club as it was the first time in 3 years that the club was able to hold a tournament in Daegu itself. Afterwards, players from Daegu, Busan and Seoul attended an after party held in Traveler’s Bar which was a great opportunity for players from different cities to get to know each other; a great night was had by all. -continued on p26-

Most recently, the club traveled to Seoul to compete in the third and final round of the Korean Gaelic League for 2015. It was a momentous day for both the club and the league as it saw unprecedented playing numbers, with Daegu submitting four teams for the first time in its history. Not only that, but there was great triumph on the pitch as well, with both the ladies and men’s teams winning 3 games each. The upturn in fortunes for Daegu on the pitch is a sure reflection of the growing strength of the club, and proof that our closeness as a social group has made us into a better team. The next tournament will be the North Asian Gaelic Games, to be held on September 12th in Seoul. This competition hopes to attract teams from China and Japan, as well as the three local Korean clubs. If last year is anything to go by, it promises to be a brilliant tournament. The club welcomes any person who wants to get involved, if you want to meet some great people and learn a new sport then why not give Gaelic Football and Daegu Fianna a try, you won’t regret it! We can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Send us a private message and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Medi City Daegu Goes to Kazakhstan • Written by Matthew Caracciolo, Photos by EXCO

Kazakhstan’s medical services are not well developed. Korea is therefore uniquely suited to cater to the country’s medical needs. The former Soviet country is ripe for harvest, but there are inevitably challenges. Geographically, Kazakhstan and South Korea are very far apart. Kazakhs traveling abroad for medical treatment have typically flown to nearby Turkey or other European countries. Therefore, as part of a more aggressive strategy to increase exposure, Daegu medi tour sent a delegation to Kazakhstan to participate in the Kazakhstan International Healthcare Exhibition (KIHE 3015) in May. The exhibition, held at the Atakent Exhibition Center in Almaty, featured 300 companies from 22 countries. 900 visitors attended the expo for medical equipment, supplies, and facilities. The team from Daegu, which included personnel from Fatima Hospital, BL Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, KTO Daegu Gyeongbuk Branch, Korea Medical Tour, and EXCO, operated a promotion booth where they distributed brochures and souvenirs to promote the meditours in Daegu. They had consultations with a local hospital, tour agency, and individuals within the expo.

As part of Daegu’s mission to lure international travelers for medical treatment, Daegu medi tour has established a list of target countries that includes China, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, Vietnam, and surprisingly Kazakhstan. South Korea is viewed positively by the Kazakhs, being one of only 10 countries in the world whose citizens do not require a visa for entry into Kazakhstan. Additionally, the Kazakhs admire Korea’s high level of technology and medical capabilities. Outside of the main metropolitan centers of Almaty and Astana,

28

Medi City Daegu Goes to Kazakhstan

Outside of the expo, the team had the chance to tour around the country and meet individuals and companies in the local medical industry. A trip to SEMA Hospital resulted in an agreement to a training program at Fatima Hospital. The group traveled to Kapchagay for a medical volunteering session and made a MOU contract with Kapchagay National Central Hospital. While in town they had a business meeting with the Director and Vice Director of the hospital, another meeting with the Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioner of the Health Department, and the Commissioner of the Education Department, and a presidential address to the significant Korean community in Kapchagay. The local Koreans were an easy target for promoting Daegu, establishing a foundation to attract future ethnically Korean medical tourists. Perhaps the most unique and far-reaching part of the trip was opening Fatima Hospital’s promotion center in Almaty. At the center, patients are able to receive a consultation from Fatima Hospital in real time through the internet. The center hopes to enable many long-distance medical consultations to attract more patients to Daegu.

http://www.daegucompass.com

The fruits of the team’s labors were many. The meeting with Kapchagay’s Mayor and other high-profile authorities resulted in a promise to offer land and infrastructure such as free water and sewage if investment conditions are met. The team created a foundation to cooperate with local Kazakh hospitals and tour agencies and established connections with new hospitals and agencies to work with in the future. And perhaps most importantly, Daegu, not Seoul, was Korea’s face for the duration of the expo, sidestepping the capital and keeping Daegu in the spotlight for medical tourism. But the hard work is just beginning, and the list of future plans is extensive. Daegu medi tour wants to establish a transport system for the Almaty market, simplifying the travel process for prospective medical tourists. An invitation to Kazakh governors, medical institutions, and tour agencies to Daegu is forthcoming to establish a continuous cooperative relationship. The Mayor of Kapchagay already paid Daegu a visit, impressed by the breadth of the health checkup he received at Fatima Hospital as well as the speed in which he received the results. More Russian medical coordinators are sought after throughout Daegu’s medical institutions and tour agencies. Lastly, Fatima Hospital awaits SEMA Hospital’s staff to begin the training program, the first step in establishing a cooperative network between the two hospitals. While Daegu medi tour works tirelessly to attract more of their new Kazakh friends, upcoming trips for the team include Kamchatka in Russia and another trip to Almaty, Astana in October. Indeed, although Kazakhstan is the team’s newest and most unique focus, it is only one part of Daegu medi tour’s international ambitions.

Gajok

Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road

Kyungpook Uni. Area

Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics. District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.

1. Most stores close around six or seven p.m. (It varies by store and some may be open later) 2. Bring cash! These vendors do not accept credit cards. So hit the ATM before you shop here. 3.
