Lao Thai
Suseong’s Hidden Gem • Written and photographed by Dave Lim Translated by Yujeong Lee
Living near Jisan/Suseong Lake area, there are so many restaurants that figuring out what to eat has become a challenge. One night as I am riding my bike through a random street, I read a sign that says “Laothai” which immediately catches my attention for many reasons. First, I love Thai and Southeast Asian food. Second, I was curious what kind of food the restaurant served.
As I enter the restaurant-which has a clean and chic interior- I was greeted by the staff. The restaurant can seat up to 24 people. They carry a variety of beverages and they serve 4 brands of Thailand beer. The picture menu helped a lot because it gave me an idea what the food looked like. From previous experiences at different restaurants, I ordered something which came out completely different than what I had originally had in mind.
As I was deciding what to order, I double check and ask the waiter if the padthai has eggs in it because I have allergies. The waiters English wasn’t great and neither is my Korean so he told me to wait and brought James, who is the co-owner and cook. James speaks excellent English for he has studied in New Zealand. Also, he speaks Mandarin because he worked and lived in China for a year. James immediately tells me that padthai does have egg in it and he happily takes my request and will not put any eggs in my dish.

Shortly after I order my food, my shrimp padthai comes out. Just the smell and presentation has my mouth watering. Finally, I took my first bite and it was delicious. The noodle texture and seasoning was perfect. There was nice kick of spice that didn’t over power the flavor and the peanuts gave it a nice crunchy texture which I really enjoyed. James came over and asked how I liked it and told me if I didn’t like it, he would make me something else. I told him not to worry because I liked it and by that time, I was already half way finished with my food.

Laothai opened on April 27th 2016. James and his partner work as cooks. The opening hours are from 11:30AM to 11:00PM Tuesday through Sunday and they are closed on Monday. The portions are perfect. The food price ranges from 5,000 won to 25,000 won. Beef padthai and shrimp padthai are 10,000 won but you can get chicken or pork padthai for 8,000 won. They also serve Vietnamese pho and spicy seafood noodle which is 10,000 won each. The green curry is authentic with lime leaf and cost 15,000 won. If you enjoy spicy food, I recommend the green curry because it tastes amazing!
To get to this hidden gem, take Yellow Line 3 and get off Jisan (it’s the next stop after Suseong Lake). Take an exit and go down the escalator and cross the street on the left hand side. After you cross the street, take a right go down the road towards the outdoor golf and take the first left where Jisan Middle School is and walk up. At the first intersection, make a right and go down the road for two blocks. After the second intersection, make a left and go up and it should be on the left corner. Bahn Mi Rico Vietnamese Bistro Near the KNU North Gate
• Written and photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva Translated by Yujeong Lee
If you are looking for a non-Korean lunchtime alternative, then I highly recommend Bahn Mi Rico, a small but atmospheric Vietnamese Sandwich Bistro located at the end of the main eating strip across from KNU North Gate.
The name is in reference to its speciality dish - the Vietnamese sandwich - which is known as bánh (bread) mì (wheat) in Vietnamese. However, these mini baguette looking rolls are actually made with rice flour and were developed during the French colonialism period of the country. Like the the traditional versions, Bahn Mi Rico’s chicken bahn mi (5,800won) is stuffed with succulent chicken coated in a spicy sauce of mayonnaise and sriracha, which is topped with cilantro (coriander), cucumber and shredded carrots. It is served with a miniature fry basket of American thin french fries and special powdered herb and cheese seasoning. And because it is Korea, a side of pickles.
12
Bahn Mi Rico
I know many Koreans have a Marmite love hate divide with the cilantro that features prominently in the sandwiches, but I hardly notice it. The cucumbers are more of a concern for me! However, the friendly, English speaking staff are happy to omit whatever you hate on request.
http://www.daegucompass.com
There are a few additional items on the simple menu, including my next favorite, the pad thai. Freshly cooked and bursting with flavor, Bahn Mi Rico’s pad thai (7,500won) is a delightful concoction of prawns, chicken, egg, chopped peanuts, diced green onions and bean sprouts stir-fried together and garnished with dried scallions and a wedge of lemon. Be careful of the hidden dried red chilies though! I always have to pick mine out as they provide too much fire for me. This dish is slightly sweet, slightly spicy, in just the right balance.
DAEGU COMPASS AUGUST 2016
Despite religiously eating here at least once a week, since arriving to Daegu over three months ago, I’ve never managed to try the pho or the pizza or the any other types of bahn mi. However, given the exceptional taste of the above two dishes, I’m sure that they are just as delicious.
The other great part about this cafe is that they serve a traditional Vietnamese coffee, slow steeped onto a layer of sweetened condensed milk. A must-have post sandwich pick-me-up, which they serve hot or cold.

Ilsangdabansa Daegu’s Cultural Hub
• Written and photographed by Ilsangdabansa Translated by Yujeong Lee
Ilsangdabansa is a complex cultural space where we can learn about various cultures in various ways; performances, seminars, exhibitions and so on, as part of our daily life. We have an open stage, where people can mingle together without any barriers. We also host lectures, which provide new perspectives towards the world and inspire people to remember their dreams and passions. We have performances, where you can meet unique artists. Our classes are fun, and away from school, which all people can enjoy. We want to be a cultural hub in the city, where people and the community can meet and share cultures.
Ilsangdabansa has two locations: one in Bukseongro, where we usually have performances and seminars, and another in Dongsan-dong, where there is study space and a detox café. We have bi-monthly performances or lectures. ‘Small Talk’ is a popular conversational gathering, that includes a specific subject and topical expert; this is held 1~2 times a month. ‘Semangang’ is a larger-scale version of ‘Small Talk’, which is more like a lecture. It is held twice a year and includes easy topics for everyone.

Lost in Translation One Guy’s Guide to Living in Korea • Writted by Sandra Stanton Photos by Brian Ward Translated by Yujeong Lee
They say if you stare long enough into the abyss, it stares into you. Well, when looking into the unknown abyss that is ESL teaching when it stares back, it looks an awful lot like a bunch of bored kids looking at you like, “헐!?”. Taking that final step to become an ESL teacher in another country can be frightening, but doing your homework beforehand can make the final plunge a lot less daunting. For those ready to leave their native countries and even for those who have just arrived, Brian Ward’s “First Contact in Korea: A Native English Teacher’s Journey Into the Backwoods of South Korea” is another book to add to your reading list. Brian Ward worked as a hagwon teacher in Mokpo. After his time in Korea, he gathered his experiences, put them to paper and created a collection of stories that detail Ward’s, admitted, backwards approach to living in Korea.

This guidebook uses personal anecdotes to explore Korean culture, history, and its education system. Interspersed throughout the stories are tidbits about pay and health insurance, and advice about contracts. These details help to complete a portrait of hagwon working life for foreigners in Korea. The particular academy that Ward writes of, is one that potential ESL teachers may want to steer clear of, and is a reminder to do your research before you sign on the dotted line, especially when looking at private school jobs.

Daegu A Leader in the Medical Tourism Industry
The year 2016 is shaping up to be a banner year for Daegu’s medical tourism industry. Two milestones in particular highlight the city’s position as a leader in medical tourism. This year’s Medi Expo was a roaring success, and local authorities have much to celebrate. Held at EXCO on the last weekend of June, the expo attracted over 29,000 participants, 10,000 more than the expo last year, to attend its business meetings, familiarization tours, seminars, job fair, and other events. More than 600 overseas buyers made the expo a financial success. With such achievements come even greater expectations for the expo in years to come.

The exciting weekend began with the Night of Medical Tourism, a reception for invited overseas buyers, Daegu City, and people who related to Daegu’s medical institutions and businesses. The welcome dinner included entertainment and networking opportunities and featured Chinese singer ZaiZai and Taiwanese model Yedda Chiu as honorary ambassadors of Daegu Medical Tourism. The singer performed to celebrate the night and Korean traditional dance and music performance captured buyers’ heart.

The Expo not only brought international attention to the city, but was also designed to serve the community. A highlight of the Expo wasMedi ExpoJob Fair. Organized to decrease unemployment rates in Daegu and Gyeongbuk province, the fair matched local medical students with the major hospitals and medical companies in the area, who hired many attendees on the spot. Consultant desks offered job information to students. Another program designed for locals was the Medical Tour Interpreter Training Program. About 100 participants from the vicinity learned about interpreter services anddetails about the medical coordinator career. The program attracted college students, mothers from multicultural families, and even working interpreters. The year’s other exciting news is the launch of new medical tour insurance by Daegu Metropolitan City. Previously, foreign medical tourists enjoying Daegu’s healthcare facilities were only protected by health checkup insurance. The new insurance is offered for free to tourists coming to Daegu for one of its’ medical tours, insuring patients up to 50 million won for up to a year in the case of a medical accident. -continued on p30-

Daegu’s new medical tourism insurance covers all kinds of medical tourism-related injuries, making it the first such insurance product in South Korea. After a long period of negotiations, Dongbu Insurance and the Daegu Metropolitan City agreed that medical tourists needed more than basic health checkup protection and designed a product that covers injury and death and reimburses the costs of unexpectedly extended stays up to 1 million won. The two parties signed an agreement to develop an insurance product that covers general injuries and accidents that may occur during the city’s medical tours. Alongside the new insurance is a new Medical Tour Taxi, a call service available to foreign tourists to make getting around the city stress-free.

Daegu
In addition, Daegu Metropolitan City has prepared a three-layered safety net for the medical tourism industry. Hospitals purchase Medical Liability Insurance, Daegu Metropolitan City purchases Daegu Medical Tourism Safety Insurance, and the MedicityDaegu Council administers the Medical Disputes Resolution Support System. About 6,000 foreign patients visiting Daegu each year will receive benefits. Kim Yon-Chang, vice mayor for economic affairs at Daegu Metropolitan City, believes the city’s reputation as a medical destination will only improve, saying “Daegu will continue to strengthen its institutional safety measures with the goal of ensuring the safety of medical tourists and sustaining the growth of the medical tourism industry.” With an expanding expo, continued stellar service by the medical tour programs, and a brand new insurance product protecting thousands of incoming tourists, Daegu’s future as a medical infrastructure hub is promising.

Travelling to Taiwan A Great, Little Holiday
• Written and photographed by John Golding Translated by Yujeong lee
For this summer vacation I decided to visit an Asian country that isn’t too far away from Korea. After agonizing over Google maps, I decided on Taiwan as I had never travelled to a country with close cultural ties to China before. Jeju Air was my chosen airline due to price and the fact that they fly out of the rather close Gimhae Airport.

This vacation I just wanted to relax and take it easy. Therefore I decided to base myself and stay within the capital Taipei. I also took 27,000 Taiwan dollars with me for spending money and emergencies (This turned out to be too much money as I returned with 18,000 Taiwan dollars). For the duration of my trip I booked myself into the Next Taipei Hostel based in Ximending. 32

Korea is a great place to live and work, but sometimes it can be a bit too hectic. Not long after my school’s semester was finished I was more than ready for a break! I took an airport bus from Dongdaegu terminal to Gimhae Airport, and found myself in the air rather quickly. After touching down in Taoyuan airport, it was nearly midnight and luckily there was still a bus service that would take me to downtown Taipei. The bus (1819) dropped me off at the Taipei bus station west terminal, however there were no running buses or metro trains to take me to my hostel. Luckily I had the address for my hostel in Chinese and there was a large taxi rank by the bus stop. http://www.daegucompass.com

Once you get there, I personally recommend the ‘small sausage inside a large sausage’, Oyster omelet and Guabao (without the peanuts).

Before you even reach the main hall, you can also visit an arts centre/theatre in the area. The memorial hall looks like a giant palace temple from the outside; once you climb the steps to the main entrance, you can see the large statue of former president KaiShek staring directly at you. There are also art galleries on the lower floors, if you fancy even more culture.

Travelling around Taipei is pretty easy, especially when you have an Easycard in your pocket. The Easycard operates exactly the same as a Cashbee or T-Money card. They can be purchased at any 7/11 or metro station and you can add extra credit at these same places.

When flying to Taiwan airport, it’s important to remember that only Songshan airport is actually in Taipei. Taoyuan, the busier and most important airport in Taiwan, is not. If you arrive late at night or early in the morning there is a 24 hour bus that goes to Taipei’s main bus station (west terminal).

Step Off The Traditional Backpacker Trail Take a Trip to Luang Prabang, Laos • Written and photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva Translated by Yujeong Lee
Are you looking for an off the tourist trail destination for your next holiday? Then consider Luang Prabang, Laos. This charming, former French colony is a relatively undiscovered destination that boasts UNESCO status for its well preserved heritage; endless adventure activities from mountain-biking and trekking to kayaking; breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and the historic Mekong river; unheard of mouthwatering cuisine; and a laid-back vibe that will transport you back in time. With flights taking as little as seven hours from Seoul and fares as low as 700,000won, it becomes a great option for a week away from Korea. In this one compact spot, consisting of only four main roads and a small population of roughly 56,000, the activities and attractions are endless. In one week you can:

● Cook Lao Cuisine at Tamarind Lao food is full of intriguing flavors and the full day cooking course offered by Tamarind gives you an insight into this relatively undiscovered cuisine. The class starts with a food market tour and then whisks you to their picturesque lakeside pavilions for a multicourse meal of sticky rice and ‘jeow’ (a spicy dipping sauce made from fire-roasted aubergines) and lapp (a minced meat salad with fragrant herbs and bile). http:// www.tamarindlaos.com/ 타마린드에서 라오스 음식 배워 보기

This is a controversial activity, one I ethically debated a long time before doing. I carefully choose this sanctuary, as it provides a picturesque home and new, abusive-free jobs for rescued elephants that were previously working in the forest industry. The full day mahout experience includes training on how to control this 3 ton animal, a 3km ride on a howdah (elephant seat), a bareback bathing experience in the Nam Khan river, and a banana feeding session to say thank you for the opportunity. http://www.elephantvillage-laos. com/about/

Many organized tours, such as elephant riding, include trips to one of these falls as part of the overall package, so work out if an included visit is part of a paid tour before you arrange a private trip. My favorite was Kuang Si Falls, which are easily reached by hitching a ‘taxi’ truck ride to the spot 29km out of town. Here a three tier waterfall collects in numerous turquoise colored

How To Save A Life Developing the Rescue Culture in Korea
• Written and photographed by Shannon Milojkovic Translated by Yujeong Lee
Have you ever considered adoption? I’m talking about the inter-species, furry fiend kind. If not, this is why you should. Korea’s animal orphans need homes, and this article will hopefully encourage you to help in any way you are able. Over the next two issues of The Compass, we will explore the subject of animal abandonment in Korea. This month, we will outline the problems Korea currently faces with hundreds of dogs and cats being euthanized every month. According to Hannah Shelter’s representative, part of the problem is that compassion is unfortunately something not everyone grew up with or understands. Korea also lacks concrete animal rights that should serve to protect, therefore, the country carries a large amount of once wanted abandoned and abused ex-pets. In the next part, however, we’ll discuss solutions, ar-
eas you can contribute and hear some feedback from those who have done it- adopted, fostered and volunteered. If this article leaves you heartbroken, which in some ways I hope it does, please do follow up next month and join the community that saves these little lives.

On July 14th, the “Colorfuldaegu” Facebook page posted an image and a link for Hannah Shelter in an attempt to create more awareness and encourage volunteers. For those who saw the post, you’ll find that it’s really not quite the same as shelters “back home”. There are no 2 by 1 meter caged areas for each dog, complete with his own bed and water bowl. Hannah Shelter is really just one person, a kind Korean lady, who has assembled this shelter informally in attempt to provide a safe place for the abandoned dogs of Daegu. It’s no palace, even by shelter standards, but it’s all they have. They are safe, they have food and clean water, and they are off the streets where they would face a number of unspeakable dangers. However, despite the kindness, passion and sacrifice of people like Aunt Hannah all over Korea, there are still kill shelters and pounds, which besides the killing, imply often horrific conditions.I don’t want this to become a negative article that paralyzes readers to whom this is passionate topic, however, naturally, it dances very gingerly along the line.

Korea’s city pounds give their animals a period of 10 days grace. In this time, it’s hoped they find a home, and if not, they’re euthanized. BAPS (Busan Abandoned Pet Sanctuary) gives more insight on government funded shelters: “The city government supports private, for-profit dog pounds… Any pound that receives government money CANNOT refuse any dog that is sent there by the city or by citizens. While receiving dogs seems like a great thing… there is one trap to it: OVERPOPULATION”. (Shindogs.org). Hence, there are many (although still not enough) privately run, unstaffed, homemade shelters started up by people who just love animals. But they really need help, and you, readers, are the only ones capable. As the necessary cliché goes: If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, volunteer. If you can’t volunteer, donate. If you can’t donate, then at the very least share this knowledge and help realize the reality.

From the Shelters: As BAPS suggests, receiving government money comes with conditions. Therefore, both Hannah Shelter and BAPS, the shelters discussed below, receive no income from the government in attempt to remain independent and keep their animals alive and in healthy living conditions. For Hannah Shelter, relying fully on volunteers and donations means that at times, it is difficult just to provide a few pellets in the bowls of the shelter dogs, and the small space is inundated with them. It’s relatively common knowledge that Hannah Shelter suffered a massive explosion in 2014, from which they are slowly recovering. There are hardly any adoptions because there are no systems in place. Again, there is just nobody to do it. However, it’s not impossible, and it might be found that adoption would happen on a more personal level with volunteers who Aunt Hannah knows well. However, Hannah Shelter needs more than adopters, they need dog walkers, feeders, washers and people to just give them the human contact they need to get over their fears and be loved. They need fosters, money for vet bills, blankets, mosquito coils, food… The list goes on. For most of the dogs at Hannah Shelter, this will be their home forever.

BAPS (Busan Abandoned Pet Sanctuary), located in Gimhae, is another shelter that deserves mention and support. They too are completely reliant on volunteer everything from funding to hands on work. “The shelter spends much more than it receives,” and sometimes use their personal incomes to keep the sanctuary going. BAPS is more formally run; they have volunteer and adoption policies in order to keep their animals’ safe, and place emphasis on finding homes for all of their dogs. They do not have the capacity to scour the countryside for abandoned dogs, they are literally three people,
DAEGU COMPASS AUGUST 2016
“who saw a need, and have been doing the best we can to care for it.” (shindogs.org) BAPS maintains a highly comprehensive website that is useful for all pet owners, shindogs.org. They provide information regarding international pet travel, adoption, common diseases, what to do if you find a dog on the street, general care, and dispel a lot of the myths about dogs not being able to live comfortably in an apartments or travel internationally. BAPS discusses these issues in detail and put it aptly: “Do not let your own human perceptions get in the way of a relationship with a dog. Events that seem monumental to you, often don’t even register in the dog’s radar.”
-continued on p44-

Finally, I would like to mention Animal Rescue Network Korea (ARNK). ARNK can be found through its Facebook group that hosts communications between animal lovers all over Korea, but its main purpose is to provide an advertising platform for adoption profiles from animals all over the country at rescuekorea.org.It is a highly efficient and safe portal which implies rules such as an adoption fee to ensure applications from only serious adopters. Thanks to ARNK, a countless number of animals are now in their forever homes both in Korea and all over the world. This is perhaps where the kindest people and most passionate animal lovers dwell, in this cyber community. This is also where I was able to gather interviewees who have adopted and shared their experience, all of which will be discussed in the next part of this story.

Gajok
Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road
Kyungpook Uni. Area
Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
