Caliente Dos! Caliente Turns up the Heat with Second Location in Daegu Written and photographed by Ivan Broida

Not far from downtown Daegu, tucked away in the Daebong neighborhood, the new Caliente Gastro Pub makes a lot of ambitious promises. Caliente is a familiar name for many, as it has been synonymous with TexMex style food for quite some time now in the Samdeok Fire Station area of downtown. Caliente Gastro Pub is a departure from the original concept, but it doesn’t shy away from its roots. Daebong-dong itself is an up-and-coming neighborhood, right behind the towering Central Plaza apartment buildings. A lot of restaurants and bars have started popping up all along the Daebong main road, as it often happens when a place or a street becomes popular. This area has the usual fare of Korean restaurants and bars, so can Caliente Gastro Pub set itself apart from the rest?

8

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.SEPTEMBER

Firstly, let’s talk about what Caliente Gastro Pub is not. It is not a rehash of the first Caliente. It doesn’t serve TexMex food, it doesn’t have a DJ playing loud music, and the bartenders don’t do cocktail shows. For all of that, the Caliente in the downtown area is more than happy to entertain. Caliente Gastro Pub does have a pool table, a couple of dart boards, and a TV playing music videos. However, the music is softer than at the downtown location and it has a resident mixologist who will be more than happy to whip up any kind of drink or cocktail. Caliente Gastro Pub wouldn’t brandish that name if it didn’t offer some carefully crafted dishes. The menu, which will be revised and expanded seasonally, has a definite Mediterranean and European tilt to it, and this is a good thing. The dishes I tried fell along those lines. The first one, the Melon Prosciutto Salad, which includes the

two title ingredients plus cherry tomatoes and mozzarella, is a refreshing starting dish. It satisfyingly blends the sweetness of the melon with the salty, nutty flavor of the prosciutto ham. This was followed by the Broqueta, a skewered-meat (chicken, beef, and shrimp) dish with grilled vegetables and corn on the cob. The Broqueta is prepared using quite a generous amount of fire at the bar’s grill, which gives it an additional oomph of fun. The next dish, the croquette, is traditionally regarded as having originated in France but it is truly an international food, with each country adding its own twist to it. The one offered at Caliente Gastro Pub comes filled with chicken and vegetables, with an aioli pickle dipping sauce. The final dish is emblematic of the Spanish peninsula, the Spanish Tortilla. This thick egg omelette comes filled with potatoes, onions, and chorizo ham. Caliente Gastro Pub is proud of the quality and uniqueness of the food it serves. Of course, a gastro pub would not be complete without beer. For the beer enthusiast, there are some excellent beers on tap, which are generally not available at other bars or pubs. For the not-so-picky drinker, the classics are there as well. The atmosphere of this new gastro pub is relaxed, and it is great for meeting friends and have conversations over great beer and even better food. It will have some exciting events soon, including one where customers will get a free beer. Caliente Gastro Pub is open daily from 5pm to 3am.

▶Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier: Naturally cloudy and shining silky gold in the glass under a really strong head of foam. At the first mouthful this Weissbier classic has a mild aroma of banana. Finer palates detect a trace of mango and pineapple and the balance between sweet and bitter. Beer connoisseurs appreciate the fine note of yeast and the mild but sparkling mix of aromas. It is a typical beer garden beer, which brings people together all over the world.

▶Indica IPA: Indica is a hoppy, full-bodied ale. It has a higher than average alcohol content balanced by radical bittering from Columbus hops, then dry hopped with generous amounts of Willamette and Centennial hop flowers.

▶Weihenstephan: A flavourful beer enjoyed with fine poured, white foam. With a mild hoppy note and its pleasant fresh spicy taste, it goes very well with salads, poultry, stews or with a hearty snack.

12th Daegu International Opera Festival The Best Opera's Come to Daegu Daegu International Opera Festival (or DIOF) which represents Korea and festival which Daegu citizens love, is one of the greatest music festivals and maintained an 83 percent occupancy with around 100 performances by about 50 group from 18 countries. It has received continued praise from the media and audiences as years go by. DIOF, the first in Korea and the only international opera festival in Asia, has gone through remarkable development since the beginning in 2003, and has shown strong growth by ranking No. 1 in the music field in 2006 and obtaining the top grade (A) in 2005, 2010 and 2012 by the evaluation of national treasury support projects of Ministry of Culture and Tourism. DIOF has done it best to establish a foundation to popularize opera. The festival has been favorably received both by critics and the public by staging a wide range of 18

genres from works loved by ordinary people constantly, and by using internally and externally excellent cultural infrastructure to works which can satisfy opera lover’s cultural thirst. In addition, it has also staged a ballet, puppet show and Korean traditional opera, and made efforts in producing and developing Korean-made operas including <The Spirit of Fire> and <The Memory of Chungna Hill>. Moreover, it has become the hub of performance cultures in Asia through producing Asia joint opera since 2010. The opera festival, which received attention due to Korean singers and a production team entering Germany in 2009, got into China in 2010, Germany in 2011, and finally ‘Aspendos International Opera & Ballet Festival’ in Turkey in 2012 with <La Traviata>. This ‘made in Korea’ opera received a standing ovation and praise

from the audience from all over the world, and made the headlines of over 10 press outlets. The performance in Turkey which made a splendid achievement of exporting almost all parts of opera including singers, production staff, costumes and stage, became a good chance to expand Korean opera’s range to go into the world stage. With the participation in the international singing competition in April 2013, it entered Poland in May and became a legend by having all seats of its performance of <Carmen> sold-out early. The plan of overseas expansion has already scheduled Italy and Germany in 2015, and Poland in 2016, and makes a higher level of international status of Korean opera realistic. The opera festival, which became the hub of Asian opera based on the excellence of Korean singing talent and the producing technology of opera itself, recognized as the world’s best, will continue going a step towards achieving a great dream of the globalization of Korean opera.

Daegu Coffee & Cafe Fair 2014 Wake up and Smell the Coffee Written by Kate Ko / Photos submited by Daegu Coffee & Cafe Committee / proofread by Katherine Kirk

Daegu Coffee & Cafe Fair 2014 is an extraordinary celebration of the coffee we all love and much more. The fair will take place from October 8th (Wed) – 11th (Sat) at EXCO exhibition center. A catchphrase from previous years called the fair “the Mecca of coffee culture,” and past visitors and exhibitioners couldn’t agree more. The event is organized by Daegu Metropolitan City, Korea Coffee Association (KCA) and MunhwaBank Co. Ltd. Daegu Coffee & Cafe Fair 2014 is celebrating its fourth year running, hosting thousands of coffee lovers with a vast variety of coffee beans, roasts, drips, drinks, blends and lets not forget the tea. Everything related to the café experience is showcased: eye-catching coffee machines, tableware, delicious desserts, sweets, juices… you name it, the Daegu Coffee & Cafe Fair 2014 22

has it. Moreover, at the fair, guests will have a chance to taste some of the most aromatic and exotic beans from around the world. There is more to the fair than just coffee though, guests can learn valuable information on cafe franchising, how to build a start-up company and café consulting. The fair will include many must see, taste and do events: Daegu Coffee & Cafe Fair 2014 will host “The Young Barista Championship.” This is an event where barista apprentices from all over Korea compete in creating the most delicious coffee drinks. Daegu Coffee and Café Fair will host two world championships this year. One them being “Daegu Coffee Roasting Championship,” which will highlight the roasters who create the most refined coffee blends. The other one is the “World Coffee

Cocktail Championship,” which will showcase the flashiest acrobatic tricks of talented drink pourers. Competitions held at the fair don’t end there though, this year’s “Korea Cake Design” contest will allow artists with bakery skills to unleash their amazing imagination to create visually stunning delicacies you won’t believe your eyes. Those dreaming of their own start-up can attend seminars on how to start a Coffee Business. The Daegu Coffee Association will provide demonstrations on coffee dripping, tutored tastings and talks about fine details of coffee culture. All this is done with the help of seasoned coffee specialists.

North Korea Unwrapping the Mystery Inside the Enigma Written and photographed by Stephen Schuit / http://koreanbookends.blogspot.com / Translated by Yujeong Lee

The U.S. State Department’s bulletin of May 21st was unambiguous. It strongly recommended against travel by Americans to North Korea. This warning was based on several recent and worrisome incidents; the arrests of two U.S. citizens, one apparently after asking for asylum, the second for allegedly leaving a bible in his hotel room. These incidences happened as another American was serving a sentence in a North Korean labor camp. He still is.

It is not easy to sit on the fence when it comes to North Korea, also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Its leaders have been characterized as ruthless, its policies and actions interpreted as reckless. It’s universally seen as an international pariah--a rogue state like no other. In his January 2002 State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush, famously labeled North Korea (along with Iran and Iraq) as one of three countries comprising the “Axis of Evil.”

Once I discovered that U.S. citizens could, in fact, legally visit North Korea by going through China, I signed myself up. Our tour originated in Beijing, only a two-hour flight from my residence in Daegu where I teach English at a local university. Koryo Tours, a British outfit, scheduled a mandatory briefing session, in their Beijing office, the day before we departed on our 8-day tour of North Korea. We listened intently to their recommended “Do’s,” and mostly, “Don’ts.” Don’t stray from the group at any time. No photos of soldiers or military installations. Don’t ask our North Korean tour guides challenging political questions that might be interpreted as insults to the leadership there. Suddenly, this adventure was becoming uncomfortably real.

Our Russian-built plane landed in Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital of 3.5 million, clearly the showcase of the country. The many photos of Pyongyang I had seen suggested a dark gray metropolis, devoid of color, with wide empty streets, its citizens, drab and humorless. Pyongyang, also known as the City of Monuments with its seemingly endless parade of statues, museums and edifices that honor the State, does lack both the vibrancy and excitement of its South Korean counterpart, Seoul. But it’s a city that somehow seems to make due in spite of endless obstacles, including an inferior infrastructure, and -continued on p28-

regular power outages. When the lights go out, no one misses a beat. Its subway, bus and trolley systems make impressive use of antiquated vehicles from the 70’s, 80’s, even the 60’s—many imported from former Eastern bloc countries.

Our tour covered a wide swath of the southern half of the country and included a visit to Panmunjeom, along the DMZ, and the nearby historic city of Kaesong, where 120 South Korean-built and managed factories provide employment to over 53,000 North Korean workers. Having previously visited the DMZ from the South Korean side, I was surprised by how low key and non-bellicose the North Korean soldiers were. In fact, I struck up a conversation with an officer who led our tour there. He was cordial and posed for photos with a number of us on the tour. Such informality never happens with their 28

more serious South Korean army counterparts.

I was impressed by the general friendliness of the North Koreans we encountered everywhere we visited. They are very much like the South Koreans I have come to know and respect for their earnestness, generosity and diligence. North Koreans seem to genuinely love their country and they are a very proud lot. However, that should not come as a surprise.

through 3 consecutive generations of the Kim dynasty, now resides with 30-year old Kim Jung Un. North Korean newspapers, TV broadcasts, schools, billboards, banners, even public loud speakers, extol praise for the country while spewing forth propaganda against the enemy, usually in the personage of the venomous Americans.

The “elephant in the room” is the network of prison camps long revealed by satellite imagery and confirmed by the few individuals fortunate enough to have made it out alive. Most recently, Shin Donghyuk, author of “Escape from Camp 14,” described the almost unimaginable brutality of the camps. It’s in these camps where 3 generations of family members are banished for crimes committed against the state. All North Koreans belong to neighborhood watchdog groups, comprised of 25-50 families. Known as inminban, they are led by hardened middle-aged women who keep tabs on everyone and everything, cementing the foundation of the enterprise of fear run by Kim Jung Un and his minions. Everyone on the tour is aware of these camps. But, we avoid the topic for fear that just talking about them would put our guides at serious personal risk.

Our tour stops included a fertilizer manufacturing plant in Hamhung, an agricultural university in Wonsan, both cities along the east coast of the Korean peninsula, and a historic residence of a former king. At each site, we are greeted by a lovely hostess wearing the traditional and colorful Korean clothing called a hanbok. The story they tell us is always the same. We’re made aware when either Kim Il Sung, Kim Jung Il or Kim Jung Un visited the site and the amazing “wisdom” or expertise they imparted while there. Pictures of the visit are shown and the chair, pen or desk that they used, invariably have become sacred artifacts.

Every North Korean wears a pin picturing one or both of the former leaders on a red background. Just as predictably, their framed photos are carefully placed visibly high on a wall in every family’s residence. Patriotism, devotion and obedience, at least publicly, appear to run wide and deep. They fill the spaces between everything, like mortar, securing the bricks of the State.

Where does genuine loyalty begin and end? In what places does fear reside? It’s nearly impossible to discern in this country of cartoon-like images and monuments on steroids. During a radio address in 1939, Winston Churchill uttered these now memorable words. Russia, he said, “is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” North Korea, its people, and its exploits, to this day, remain more of a mystery than Russia perhaps ever was.

Seeing is Believing Daegu Medical Tourism Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos by EXCO

You’ve got a headache, and it’s because of your contacts again. Spring was four months ago, but those itchy eyes won’t go away. You hate wearing your glasses. Pay your mind, weary blind folk of the ‘gu’. Of the many medical procedures available in Daegu, one of the most popular for foreigners is corrective eye surgery. State of the art and at a fraction of the cost back home, LASIK and LASEK surgeries are a very affordable, very life-changing opportunity for foreigners visiting or living in Daegu.

32

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.SEPTEMBER

According to the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, over 100,000 people receive LASIK and LASEK surgeries in Korea annually. The average price of an operation is between 1.3 million and 1.8 million won, or less than half the price of the same procedure in the United States. For many foreigners living in the city, the time for corrective eye surgery is now or never. First, do some research on the right eye clinic for you. With 150 options in Daegu alone, you want to find a clinic with the most experienced practitioners, the most

appropriate (not necessarily newest) technology, and the safest protocols. Ask if the laser equipment is certified by an authorized inspection agency, and if it’s checked regularly by the clinic’s staff. Two of the leading medical institutions in Daegu are Nune Eye Hospital and Metro Eye Center. Local English teacher Maria Sheehy chose Nune after a careful selection process. “Nune was recommended to me by friends who had the procedure done there,” said Sheehy, “and I was able to read about the experiences of other foreigners who went there through blog posts.” She made an appointment and, with the reassuring vigilance of an interpreter, went through a series of tests to make sure her eyes were suited for surgery. The tests, including corneal thickness and topography, pupil size, and eye movements, provide crucial information for the surgeon’s adjustments

during the procedure. The most important test is the retina, from which surgeons can discern if eyes have excessive myopia and therefore weak retinas and optic nerves. “After about an hour and a half of tests I was called in to see the surgeon to talk about my options,” said Sheehy. “The surgeon spoke very good English and told me that I was a good candidate for both LASIK and LASEK surgeries.” The next step is to make an appointment for surgery and wait for the big day. On the day of the procedure, the surgeon will make the slightest calculations to ensure a successful and safe operation. Everything from the room’s temperature and humidity is taken into account. “They even had a suction room where all the dust was ‘vacuumed’ off you before you entered the operation 34

area,” said John Johnson, another local English teacher who chose Nune Eye Hospital. After some last minute tests and the administration of some numbing and anti-inflammatory drugs, the surgeon lays the patient down and covers one eye while using a contraption to hold the other open. Patients are told to look straight into a laser for about 15 seconds for each eye. All told, time spent lying down for the procedure is about 10 to 15 minutes. The eyes will remain blurry and discomfort is possible for a few hours after the procedure, but for most, the temporary displeasure is worth it. “The second I walked out of that room I could read the names on the buildings that were blurs before, “said Sheehy.” That alone made it all worthwhile to me.” Post-surgery check-ups are typically scheduled within a few days of the procedure, and with Nune Eye Hos-

pital, patients can report back with any complications months after the operation. While Nune Eye Hospital and Metro Eye Center are justifiably popular, some of the smaller clinics can be good choices too. Teacher Jarrod Clegg had nothing but positive things to say about Zenith Eye Clinic and his experience there.

“I’m incredibly happy I took the plunge and went for it when I had the chance,” added Sheehy. “It's definitely one of the best decisions I made here in Korea.” Stop asking ‘what if’ and start asking ‘when’ you’ll get your eyes corrected in Daegu

“The doctor was very professional and thorough,” said Clegg. “I got my surgery on Saturday, and he made an appointment for me on Sunday. Just us. The clinic was closed.” LASIK and LASEK surgeries are improving the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of people every year in Daegu. It only takes a few brave steps with a team of experienced surgeons and interpreters with you at every turn. Research local clinics and the different procedures online, ask friends and colleagues about their experiences, and decide if corrective eye surgery is in the cards for you.

Keeping Active in Daegu Alternatives to Sweating it out at the Gym Written and photographed by Annie Chen / Translated by Kate Ko

There are so many ways to keep active around Daegu. Most ways are free, but of course if you're a fitness fanatic, you'll have to pay the price. Here are some ways you can stay active and healthy while living in Daegu.

If you want to cruise around town on two wheels, you're just in luck. Most Daegu subways stations offer free bike rentals. My friends and I love renting bikes after work or on weekends and ride them all around Daegu. We usually end up using the bell on the bike to maneuver through the crazy traffic. Did I mention, they're free?? This is a great way to get to know your surrounding neighborhoods. These bicycles are in great condition and come with a lock and key. Some subway stations

you can rent free bikes at are Beomeo and Kyungpook National University Hospital. Visit the Information office in the station and make sure to bring your ARC card. You can start renting them at 6:00AM and must return them by 10:00PM. Here's a list of stations: 16 stations on line 1 and 16 stations on line 2, total 32.

If you don't like biking, get involved in the popular Korean sport of hiking! Hiking is a great way to see temples, Buddha statues, and the impressive sights of Daegu. Mt. Palgongsan is about a 30-40 minute ride on the bus from Dongdaegu Station. At the top of Mt. Palgongsan is a temple with a big Buddha statue that many Koreans pray to. It is not just an active thing to do, but it is also a cultural experience as well. There is also Apsan Park in Daegu as well, this park is larger in size and has more activities available like archery and horseback riding. While hiking, you can find yourself bonding with the Ko-

rean hikers near you which makes it a fun time going up the mountain. Make sure to go hiking at least one time before you leave Korea!

Biking and hiking are free ways to stay active in Daegu, but for the fitness connoisseur, there are many gyms you can join. Gym Mania is located in Beomeo-dong. Gyms are expensive to join in Korea, but if you're serious about it, it will be worth your while. A Gym Mania membership includes workout clothes every time you go, towels, and one hour classes every day. Some -continued on p38-

Mangwol A (literal) Breath of Fresh Air Written and photographed by Paul Petrequin / Translated by Kate Ko

It’s hardly remarkable to find a gym in Daegu. It seems a more difficult task to walk for 15 minutes and not come across an open area where an elliptical or hip-swing are being used. And with the scorching summer months fast approaching, the indoor gyms are also becoming more densely populated with the treadmill-texters and Kakao-calisthenics enthusiasts. If the playground gyms aren’t challenging enough, or the enclosed health centers don’t offer enough bang for the won, the Mangwol gym might be just what you need.

Mangwol Body Power, or “the mountain gym” as its commonly referred, is exactly that: A collection of machines, free weights, and stretching equipment that’s, well, on a mountain. It takes a brisk hike to reach the facility, but once there you cancontinue exercising your

legs, but also give due attention to the rest of your body.

“I started building Mangwol in 2005; I like this mountain a lot and always enjoyed sports and body activities,” said Jang In Chol, 68, who created and continues to maintain Mangwol. “I buy the equipment, receive donations, and try to keep everything in working order. The community has gotten very big, so a lot of attention is needed to make sure everything stays in good condition.”

Mangwol offers the equipment and weight regiment of what most of us would pay for at a big box fitness club, with the only price tag being the sweat equity of reaching it. When you first arrive, the first thing to do is be in awe at the sheer labor of assembling the facility to its layout: Two levels, with a more secluded bench press and boxing area just a bit further. Crossing the bridge to officially enter Mangwol, there’s an assortment of hula hoop areas, pull-up and dip-bars, and a half-buried tractor tire that will stretch muscles in your back you didn’t know you had. There’s even a small gazebo picnic area for relaxation and socializing that’s almost always full (post-workout, of course).

Ravioli, T-Bone Steak Gnocchi, Calzone

Up the stairs to the main deck and you’re met with fitness machines and stretching areas to warm-up, including PVC pipes of varying length and thickness to help loosen up. Once you’re ready to begin, there’s a variety of dumbbells suitable for any fitness level, and bench presses with designated weights ranging from 50-100kg. A squat rack and leg press are also available in case the hike wasn’t enough, as well as a lat-pulldown, inclined bench, butterfly machine, and assorted barbells to compliment any workout. A few more steps up the hill and there’s a heavy bag Rocky Balboa would be proud to spar a few rounds with.

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.SEPTEMBER

“I’ve been coming here for five years, and it has grown a great deal,” said Lee Yong-gol, a 75-year-old retiree and member of the Mangwol Dong Ji, a volunteer group that helps maintain Mangwol through donations and other supplies. “That it has become so large and popular is a testament to Mr. Jang’s hard work. He is here almost every day taking care of the gym, it’s because of him we can come here and use it.”

It may be cliché to suggest Mangwol is more than just a gym on a mountain, but it would be a disservice to say otherwise. Outdoors and fitness go hand-in-hand, especially in Daegu, and the communal aspect of Mangwol is something long forgotten to many gym-goers. After speaking with Mr. Lee and Mr. Chol, it’s readily apparent that the gym is an ongoing project whose upkeep is decidedly social. Each ‘member’ comes up the mountain for a workout to be sure, but Mangwol offers some-

thing more that would be difficult to find elsewhere. Coming here, you’re likely to have a conversation with a local looking to practice English or a regular interested in who you are and where you’re from – oftentimes a mix of both. Mangwol residents stay long after their routine is completed, sharing stories, food, company, and the natural surroundings that house them. Some of these aspects of Korean culture may have diminishing returns for expats who have been here for years, but heading to Mangwol for a good workout may be just what’s needed to have them reinvigorated.

Mangwol can be found in the Nobyeon-dong area of Siji. At the GS 25 on the corner of Samseonghyeon-ro and Uksu-gil, head right up the hill past the Dukwon Middle-High School on your left. A small Seusong shack with wooden placard on the right marks the trailhead. Take a left when the trail forks at the clock and enjoy.

Everday Daegu Welcome to Daegu Hansel Ong Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Photos by Hansel Ong www.everydayamonday.wordpress.com / Translated by Sujin Park

Take a look at some great street photos by Hansel Ong. Below is also a short interview we did with this avid photographer. We hope his images inspire you to go out and start snapping great street pics. If you are an artist or just enjoy taking pictures of where you live, send us an email to inquire about being published in the Daegu Compass.

1. Tell us about yourself, what brings you to Daegu? I aspire to be a portrait, nature, and travel photographer. These three are my favorite subjects, in no particular order. I love learning about culture and history, appreciating the world God gave us, and knowing and caring about other people. I am temporarily staying in Daegu, before I move to another place.

Hansel Ong

2. What do you try to capture when you photograph people in the street? I try to capture the culture, the different range of emotions of people, the colors of the surroundings, the unexpected or the comical, and the personal. 2.

3. What kind of equipment do you shoot with? Most of the time, I use my Nikon D90 with a 50mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. I also use a Fuji X20 and my iPod Touch, in case I want to take wide angle shots. 3. -continued on p48-

4. Where have you traveled? What sort of response do you get when you take pictures of people on the street? I have traveled to the Philippines, United States, and South Korea's capital--Seoul. People usually ignore me when I take photos in the streets. Sometimes, they wonder if I just took a photo of them. I also see some observing me when I frame my photograph. In any case, I always try to respect people, and drop my shot if my subject or the people around me gets uncomfortable. 4.

5. What are some of your favorite moments to capture? Once in a while, I stumble on moments that are deep for my subjects and myself, and those are my favor-

ite. I look for moments like that found in a Rembrandt or Vermeer painting. The moment is usually when the person is isolated, or just very disconnected with the surrounding. It makes me wonder what they might be thinking or feeling at that time, and for me, those fleeting moments in time are very precious. 5.

My blog is www.everydayamonday.wordpress.com. I also have photographs from Donghwasa Temple Thank you so much, please keep me updated if they get published.

Wet and Wild Fun Hwanggan Aquatic Marathon Rewind Written by Scott McLaughlin / Photos by the Daegu Compass

There are many festivals around the world that help people gather together and celebrate life through culture and sports. 2014 HwangGang Aquatic Marathon gave people an opportunity to combine all of those aspects together. The marathon allowed people from around the world to challenge themselves physically and emotionally. Afterwards, there was a celebration where Koreans and foreigners could enjoy the memories of racing to the finish line through a watery trail. The Daegu Compass organized a team to compete in the marathon on July 27th. It took about an hour to get to Hapcheon. I’ve never been there, so I was pretty excited to visit a place outside of Daegu. Countless number of tents greeted us first. It seemed many Koreans already came the day before and stayed at the camping site next to the Hwang Gang (river). As soon as I got there, I changed clothes and got ready for the marathon. There were three options for the course: 2km, 5km and 10km.I chose to run the 2 km course. Unlike a normal 50

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.SEPTEMBER

marathon, running in the water was very unique and different. It was harder, but the river was pretty clean and cold enough to reduce the summer heat. When I was approaching to the finish line, I was greeted by people who had already finished. This was also unique as everyone waited at the finish line for everyone to finish their marathon. There was a big celebration at the end where snacks and medals were handed out to participants. Once the celebration finished, we headed to a special restaurant that offered Hapcheon’s specialty, beef. It was fantastic, especially after a hard workout. Then our bus took us to Hapcheon Image Theme Park. It is the background set of Korean TV shows and movies, especially from 1920s~1980s. Some spots were used as a Ghost Park for the Horror Festival. You could get fake scar makeup on your skin from a specialist or could experience a fright in the Ghost House. Hapcheon Image Theme Park is a truly unique experience. It is a place that everyone should visit at least once during their time in Korea.

Overall, the day in Hapcheon was great for chilling out. I definitely want to come back for camping, the Image Theme Park and Ghost Park. If I join the marathon again next year, I’ll try the 10km course. Hope to see you there!

New York, New York (Western Steak)

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Compass

Connoisseur Check out these other great eats around town.

Apsan Area Gooksu Gooksu is known for its 'slow food' approach when preparing its delicious dishes for customers. Slow food doesn't mean it takes hours to cook, it just means everything is made from scratch. The restaurant has an Italian Firenze style atmosphere and serve fabulous pasta dishes. It is also famous for its T-bone steak and Ripieno pizza. Try it tonight! Your taste buds won't be disappointed. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 053-625-1365 • 2, Hyeonchungro7-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

12 Kitchen & Bar Homemade style pizza and pasta are on the menu at 12 Kitchen & Bar. The chef and owner, Yoon Gyeong-su, has studied in Italy and brought back some amazing recipes. The restaurant uses organic vegetables and ingredients from their own farm. If you are a meat lover and looking for the best steak in Daegu, this may be the place to come. 1kg of succulent, juicy T-bone steak served with roasted potatoes and garlic is a mouth watering, inducing thought just waiting to fill your appetite. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 11:30AM~10:30PM • 053-652-8007 • 41-1, Hyunchoong-ro, Nam-gu, Daegu

Bongdeok-dong Area Hamimami's The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Come on down to HamiMami's and experience a bit of home. 8AM~9PM(break time for weekdays : 3PM~5PM) • closed on Mondays 053-475-5242 • 87, Samjeong-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

Daebong-dong Barazi Barazi brings Japanese flair to Daegu. Barazi specializes in great Japanese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a home away from home. The soothing atmosphere provides customers a chance to relax with a cup of tea or some warm saki! The owner of Barazi is also an expert florist and can help arrange all your floral needs. Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p59 for directions. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 010-4505-3396 • 13-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. <Daeghan News> 12PM~12AM • 053-423-3990 • 6, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu <Two Ppul> 5PM~1AM • 053-422-1033 • 7-15, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Pic&iq VIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reservation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 6PM~11PM • 053-253-9782 • 2232-15, Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu closed on Sundays

Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
