Napoleon Brick Oven Pizza Right Here in Daegu Pizzaiolo Means Pizza Master
Written by Kate Babiarz / Photographed by Ivan Broida
Pizzaiolo (pronounced pizza-yo-lo) is a very new Italian restaurant in downtown Daegu. It’s on a busy street that foreigners often walk along, but maybe have missed. Pizzaiolo can be found on the 2nd floor of the Xi-U Shopping Center on the street in between Way-Gook Way and Traveler’s Bar. If you’re looking at the Xi-U Shopping Center, you’ll see the outside stairs to Holly’s Coffee. Take those stairs up, go left, and you’ll enter into the Pizzaiolo’s dining room. Pizzaiolo is very proud of their 500℃ brick oven pizzas, which I think they should be after I tasted them. The name Pizzaioloactually means ‘pizza master’. The fol8

lowing four pizzas are the favorites among foreigners: Margherita, Diavola, Formagi, and Calzone. The Margherita (12,900w) has a thick layer of tomato sauce that is covered with anabundant layer of mozzarella cheese and topped with fresh basil. The Diavola (13,900w) is my undeniably favorite! It has spicy salami, hot red pepper flakes, onions, mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese. The Formagi (14,900w) has five cheeses – mozzarella, cheddar, gorgonzola, cream cheese, and Grana Padano. The Calzone (14,900w) is not technically a pizza, but since it resembles a folded pizza, we will keep it in this category. It’s stuffed with

mozzarella, bacon, mushrooms, onions, and a little bit of tomato sauce. The Calzone also comes with a side salad on the same plate! These four pizzas are prepared in the traditional Napoli style, although Pizzaiolo does have fusion pizzas, like the RisoFormagi (12,900w); which is a layer of rice in a deep pan that is topped with five cheeses and baked in the oven. Each Pizzaiolo pizza is big enough for two people to share. They all come served on a wooden platter with a side of pickles, parmesan cheese, and red pepper flakes. The dough is freshly made each day in the traditional Napoli way, and only uses three ingredients! Whole tomatoes are imported from Italy, the cheese is 100% organic, and the EVOO (extra-virgin olive oil) is the highest quality you can get. Besides pizzas,Pizzaiolo also has a variety of pasta dishes. We tried the Cream Pane and the Fomodoro Dimare. The Cream Pane (13,900w) is a creamy pasta loadedwith bacon, mushrooms, broccoli and onions served in a bread bowl. The Fomodoro Dimare (12,900w) is a spicy tomato seafood pasta that has shrimp, mussels, and octopus. It’s topped with cheese and baked in the oven to give the cheese acrunchy and gooey texture. The Big Platesare a great value for three people to share. 10

A pizza is served with a big metal pan of assorted goodies. The one we tried was the Formagi& Assorted (24,900w). A regular-sized Formagi Cheese Pizza is served with topokki, buffalo chicken, potato chips, various French fries, corn salad, and ranch dipping sauce. Try one of the many Italian drinks, such as cocktails, mojitos, sangria, wine and beer alongside your meal. The Italian Cocktails come in 600ml glasses and havesugaron the rim of the glass. We tried the Spumoni (8,000w) and the Campari Orange (7,000w). They are sweet and don’t have a very strong alcohol flavor. The Virgin Mojito, Raspberry Mojito, and Blueberry Mojito are all 7,000 won, but for an extra 1,000 won, you can add some rum! They are served in 900ml glass jars. These vibrantly colored drinks are a light and refreshing compliment to the flavorful food. Now that you know what type of food there is, here’s how to order. There will be a menu and a self-order sheet on the table. Just write down what you want in the sections that are provided, and take it to the counter by the kitchen. It’s super easy to order, because the menu has English descriptions, too! Plus, if you go during the weekdays at lunch time, you’ll get a nice English-speaking waiter. Any other day, the wait staff can answer sim-

ple questions in English so no worries. The promotions from November will carry on into December! If you want to double the size of your pizza, just add 5,000 won. And, if one person can eat the Big Size pizza in 20 minutes or less, the pizza is FREE! Pizzaioloisan excellent location for a birthday party. You can use their screen projector for displaying a slide show of your birthday friend’s photos. Just simply reserve a section of the restaurant through their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/itpizzaiolo. Go on and challenge your birthday boy or girl to take the Big Size Pizza Challenge! One person has successfully accomplished it so far! Will the next one be you? Pizzaiolo is open seven days-a-week from 11 am to 11 pm, and their last order is at 10:30 pm. Now that you are craving some pizza, go check this place out and see what the other foreigners who’ve been there already are raving about!

Pan Asia is located in the downtown area on the busy street visited by many foreigners, which is the street behind the fire station (삼덕소방서) and the Catholic church (삼덕성당). Pan Asia is not a new restaurant, nor is it unknown. It’s actually one of the most common responses when someone is asked, “Where can I get good Southeast Asian food from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia or Hong Kong?” Pan Asia has had a few renovations to its interior, including new flooring, and a more open entrance. Also, Pan Asia’s owner, Jin-GyuBae, had a competition between his chefs from the five other locations throughout Korea. Eleven chefs competed to make new dishes that hold true to Pan Asia’s concept of casualcomfort food for every age and nationality. The top four dishes are now the newest additions to the already popular dishes. The newest menu items for Pan Asia, as of November, now include: Red Curry and Shrimp Cutlet, Pepper Crab and Egg Fried Rice, Hong Kong Style Sizzling Chili Shrimp, and Thai Style Seafood Noodle Salad. These
four dishes have completely different flavors from each other. This means that there is something for everybody! The Red Curry and Shrimp Cutlet (렌드커리&텃만 꿍 - 15,000w) comes served in a beautiful bowl on a wooden platter. The hot and spicy curry is definitely my favorite. The curry is made with onions, tomatoes, celery, chili, cauliflower, potatoes, and peppers. The two large breaded shrimp cutlets are handmade each day from fresh shrimp and are moist and not rubbery at all. If you are vegetarian or have allergies to shellfish, this dish is perfect for you, because you can substitute the shrimp for rice, spring rolls, or buns! The Pepper Crab and Egg Fried Rice (페퍼크랩& 계란볶 음밥 - 17,000w) is a beautiful sight to see. It’s one of the most unusual dishes they have for sure. The crab is deep fried and then cooked, making it completely okay to eat the shell and all! The crab is seasoned with sweet sauces that balance out the spiciness of the coarse ground black pepper. A good tip for this one is to eat the -continued on p14-

crab first. Then, mix the heaping pile of fried rice with the leftover sauce from the crab. This one has a wonderful flavor that I wanted more of, but get ready to get messy! The Hong Kong Style Sizzling Chili Shrimp (홍콩스타일 시 즐링 칠리 쉬림프 - 14,500w)has a vibrant red color that
gives you a good warning that it will be spicy. I could not only hear the sizzling sound it made on the hot iron pan as it was brought to the table, but I could also smell the sweet and spicy aroma. The bite-sized shrimp are lightly battered and cooked in a sauce of different chilies, to include Thai chilies and Korean chilies. Some advice for this one, DON’T eat the red chilies if you can’t handle the heat! The sauce is great, but those little Thai chilies sure do pack a punch. Also, add a side of rice (1,000w) or some buns (3,000w) to help soak up all of the remaining sauce. The Thai Style Seafood Noodle Salad (얌운센 - 10,000w) is a more subtle flavored dish. Various salad greens are the base for the thin glass Thai noodles and sweet and sour dressing. It’s topped with crispy breadedcalamari rings that add a good texture. This salad is a great pairing to a spicy dish. 14

We also got to try some additions from this year that haven’t been reviewed before. The General Tso Chicken (젠너럴쏘 치킨 - 16,000w) is by far my favorite one in Daegu. The Malaysia Cereal Shrimp (말레이시아 시 리얼 쉬림프 - 15,000w) isa unique dish that I’ve never tried before. Unpeeled jumbo shrimp are coated in an oat cereal that is imported directly from Malaysia. It’s crunchy, sweet, and a little bit salty. When Pan Asia first opened up in January 2012, I was a regular customer who would go at least once a week. One of my staple meals was the Pad See Ew (팟씨유 - 10,000w). Thin square rice noodles are cooked with beef, onions, and Thai Chili Peppers. And, you know what? It is even better now! Jin-Gyu has also added a Thai Ice Tea Bucket (타이 아이스티 - 8,000w). The sweet, milky black tea is flavored just right with a cinnamon stick and star anise. Just make sure to stir it up to get the full mixture of flavors!
Currently there is a special promotion, along with the coupon that is accompanied with this article. The deal is if you order one of Pan Asia’s NEW menu dishes on select days, your table will get one Mojito Bucket (non-alcoholic) for FREE!Monday and Tuesday:Thai Style Seafood Noodle Salad (얌운센) OR Red Curry and Shrimp Cutlet (렌드커리&텃만꿍) / Wednesday and Thursday: Hong Kong Style Sizzling Chili Shrimp (홍콩스타일 시즐 링 칠리 쉬림프) OR Pepper Crab and Egg Fried Rice (페 퍼크랩& 계란볶음밥). Now, take a taxi to Samduck Fire Station (삼덕소방서) or the subway to downtown and head towards Way-Gook Way–Check out the map in the back for exact location! The staff is friendly and can speak enough English to help you with your ordering needs! Pan Asia is open every day from 11 am to 11 pm, with the last order at 10 pm.Every Tuesday, however, they have a break from 3-5 pm to have a staff meeting to deal with complaints and improvements. Quick Eats In Hyundai Hyundai's Food Court Holds Serve
Written and photographed by Annie Chen / Translated by Yujeong Lee
If you're in downtown Daegu, near Banwoldang, and you want to grab a quick bite to eat, make your way down to Hyundai Department Store. Located on their first underground floor, you will find a food court with a variety of different cuisines. It's always a great place to eat when you're indecisive and you don't want to go to an actual sit down restaurant. The food court offers yummy gourmet desserts as well!
recognizes us and knows our order. They offer all types of naan, chicken, beef, and lamb curries. They have mild to spicy spice levels, so make sure you let them know what you want. I recommend the mild chicken curry naan set. It will cost you under 10,000w. The food is prepared quickly with great customer service.
My favorite go to spot down in the food court is, India Gate Express. My boyfriend and I frequent this place so much that the Korean woman who works there always

downtown, but if you want a quick fix, go to their express location. Here they offer spring rolls, coconut shrimp, your Thai and Malaysian noodle dishes, and then your fried rice dishes. I recommend the coconut shrimp and Asian beef rice. All their prices are also under 10,000w. One of the chefs, Adam speaks great English considering he's worked at a Michelin star restaurant in New York for 3 years. Their staff is super nice to chat with when they have a free second.
One of the last places I would recommend is Kokoro Bento. This place is a little more expensive, but they serve decent Japanese bento boxes. I tried their Waygu beef bento box and it was delicious! The beef was cooked so well and it was very fresh. The bento box came with all types of veggies and sides on top and they were definitely made to order. They also serve chicken curry, seared tuna, and many other types of bento boxes.

And of course, definitely don't forget to check out Godiva for all you chocolate lovers out there. It is newly open near the back of the food court. I will warn you that it's quite pricey, but everything is reasonable in moderation. They have soft serve chocolate ice cream, chocolate shakes, etc. So next time you want a quick bite to eat downtown, check out the food court located in Hyundai Department Store located at exit 18 in Banwoldang Station.

I Have Lived Today First Novel and Interview With Steven Moore
Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Translated by Yujeong Lee / Artwork submitted by Steven Moore
A fellow Daeguite has just published his first book. Check out, I Have Lived Today, a novel by Steven Moore: www.TwentyFirstCenturyNomad.com Excerpt : England. 1960s. A cold, harsh autumn. On an isolated island, an abusive man forces his wife to run for her life. Their son Tristan, young and afraid, also flees the island and sets out into the world to escape his demons and find his mother.
Hitchhiking beneath the backdrop of a wild and loveless November, Tristan encounters every possible character, from the genuinely kind to the inherently wicked. Beaten, robbed and stripped of even hope, Tristan finds himself on the gritty streets of London’s East End, where everything he thought he knew about life starts to shatter and crumble around him. With all hope seemingly lost, a young boy even questions the futility of life itself. But when he learns that there are others who share his torment and understand his pain, can Tristan find the courage to make it through his darkest hours?

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.DECEMBER
Tristan's tale is a grim exploration into his own conscience. As he discovers the unique ability of humans to do such heinous things both to themselves and to one another, it's all he can do to keep control as his passage of internal discovery takes one dark turn after another and sends him to the edge.
Bio : My name’s Steve, and I’m a forty-year-old Englishman who has just moved back to Daegu after living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with my freelance journalist fiancé Leslie Patrick. Quite simply, I’ve been living a nomadic lifestyle for twenty years, and having visited almost fifty countries across six continents, and lived in places as diverse as Korea, Thailand, France, Australia and now Mexico, I don’t see that lifestyle ever changing. When I’m not teaching E.S.L in Korea, you can usually find me swinging in a hammock in South East Asia, hiking the trails of South America, or chilling with a book in my garden in San Miguel.

How has the experience of writing your first novel impacted your life? Writing my first novel has shown me two things: First, publishing my debut novel was the fulfilling of a dream, and has shown me that if you want something enough, then anything is possible. And I've now realized that I'm a very passionate writer, meaning it has now become my number one ambition in terms of a possible career. I've flirted with varying projects, painting, travel guiding...even becoming a 'real' teacher. But writing is the one.
What were the hardest parts to write about? What did you do to overcome times of doubt during the writing process? Writing about the continued physical abuse of a child was tough. Fortunately, I don't have any personal experience to draw upon, but even to imagine what my main protagonist went through was at times very difficult. There were plenty of moments during the process of writing this book when I doubted the entire project. It took a long chunk of time when I wasn't earning a wage, and to think that it was probably time wasted because no one would ever read it caused me a lot of doubts. Luckily, my super supportive fiancée backed me the whole way, both financially and conscientiously. -continued on p24-

How much of the character's experience is taken from your own experience as a forty-year-old journeyman?
many things, both good and bad, for the very first time, and in terms of travel I have drawn on some of my own experiences. In relation to his deeper personal issues, I could tell you, but some things are best left to the reader's own interpretations.

What do you want people to feel, think and experience while reading your character's "tumultuous journey"? I would be delighted if anyone who read this book felt an emotional connection to Tristan. Most of us at one time or another go through very difficult life adjustments and traumatic situations, and we learn a lot about ourselves and others in that process. And there are a few unexpected revelations in his tale, which I hope cause a few surprises along the way. Mostly, I would like people to feel happy they took the time to read it.
What advice would you give to someone with similar aspirations to write their first novel? I believe everyone has a story to tell, whether imagined or from personal experiences. The NaNoWriMo program, or National Novel Writing Month, is a great way to start out. 1,666 words per day for a month = a 'Great Gatsby' length novel. My blog post about NaNoWriMo would be a useful tool to get you started.

How can we buy your book? There are a couple of ways in which to get a hold of a copy of 'I Have Lived Today.' Kindle is the easiest.Search my book on KINDLE US or KINDLE UK Paperbacks are available too. There are two things to consider. Buying a paperback on Amazon is easy, but I make only $1 per sale. But that's fine, as I would hopefully get an Amazon review too. If you'd like to help out a poor, starving author, the Createspace is best. The cost to buyers is the same, but I make a few more dollars. In reality, I'd be grateful for any purchases. ‘I Have Lived Today’를 구입할 수 있는 방법이 몇가지 있 다.
What's next for you? Will there be a new book in the near future based off the same character or are you planning on taking us on another wild adventure? I think my next book might be a travelogue. I've visited 49 countries to date, and I have plenty of tales to tell. However, I do have a kind of follow up to 'I Have Lived Today' in mind. It won't be a direct continuation of the story, but rather, I'll take one of the peripheral characters and develop their story into a standalone tale. I'm excited to get started on that soon.

하지만 ‘I Have Lived Today’의 내용을 덧붙일 생각이 있다.
Donations Since one of the central themes of my novel is the physical abuse of a child, then I feel it's appropriate that I donate 10% of all royalties to the N.S.P.C.C, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, an excellent U.K. based charity. Each purchase of my novel will help out the kids a little, so we can all feel like we're contributing to a better world, if only just a little.

LOVE146
Empowering The People Battling Child Trafficking And Exploitation Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Photos by Ashleigh Barker
Love146 seeks to rise up and equip new Abolitionists as well as give greater momentum to effective grassroots efforts. No single effort will bring about the Abolition of child trafficking and exploitation — it will be a movement united with a collective shout. Traffickers are highly organized in their crime – we must be more organized in our movement to undo and abolish their work. This requires listening to those who know what’s up. This requires networking to build relationships and communities committed to ending this atrocity. This requires audacity. This requires empowering a movement of Love. What exciting events or plans do you have coming up in the next few months? SANTACON! On December 20th, Love146 will be donning their Holiday apparel and gallivanting around downtown. We will be spreading cheer by singing loudly for all to hear! We are teaming up with local university students and volunteers to go caroling. Everyone in Daegu is invited to come out, sing along and take photos. Between carols, we will be warming up in local coffee shops and bars. We also have a movie night in the works for February so keep an eye on Facebook for details about that. 28
DAEGU COMPASS 2014.DECEMBER
How can people get involved? What's the level of commitment you expect from people? We always love to have volunteers! Whether you are able to donate baked goods, clothes for a swap, or just your time we are happy to have you. The current taskforce (usually about 10 people, full time) is full, so we are only looking for part-time volunteers at this point. However, we will be looking to start a new taskforce in late spring, as we get ready for the annual scavenger hunt. So, the more the merrier. Even if you can't volunteer -- come participate in our events! Love146 will be at the Daegu Clubs and Resources Day on December

6th if anyone wants to come learn more. Do you collaborate with any other organizations or do you just focus on what you can do from Daegu? Love146 is actually a global organization. So our chapter only operates in Daegu, but there are groups around the world who are working towards a common goal: to end child trafficking. Love146 seeks to abolish child trafficking and exploitation through rehabilitation, education, training, and grassroots empowerment groups, that's where we come in! We are a small, local group who are using the academic support that Love146 provides to understand the complex problem of trafficking and in return raising money to help support Love146. We do collaborate with lots of local businesses and groups within Daegu itself. Buy the Book, Travelers, Little Italia, and The Style Guesthouse (and so many more) have all been avid Love146 supporters! How involved are the South Korean members of the Taskforce? Several South Korean volunteers gave us a huge hand translating flyers, transliterating carols, and hawking baked goods. They are so eager to help and we are very thankful for their time and translation skills. However, the actual core taskforce requires a significant time commitment and at this time there are no Korean core taskforce members, just volunteers -- which is great too! What are some challenges you have experienced as the organizer? How do you overcome them? It's so great to work with people who are engaged and caring. Having a task force that is constantly and enthusiastically ready to do whatever is required has alleviated so many of the problems that can come with a large group of people working together. Time is, actually, the most challenging aspect. When we plan events we have to not only work around 10 schedules, our venues, but also the Waygook calendar. Daegu has got a lot going on and we have so much to do! Our group has (too) many ideas and not nearly enough time to do it all. So, we prioritize, we are flexible, and we divide and conquer as much as possible.

The Changing Fall Leaves A Time Of Transformation

I didn’t come to Korea for a job.
There are 13 Fulbright teachers here in Daegu but the Fulbright Korea program has well over 100 English Teaching Assistants scattered in different cities throughout the country. It would be an understatement to call our group a random bunch. We have aspiring doctors, professors and journalists. We have history buffs and IT geniuses. We have people who can speak Korean fluently, people whose extended families live here in Korea and people who couldn’t even read Hangul before stepping off the plane. So labeling our group as “random” doesn’t quite begin to cover it. And our motivation for coming to Korea varies as much as our future job aspirations.
Let me rephrase that: I came to Korea for much more than just a job. I came to challenge myself and to make a transformation.

The Fulbright Korea program is centered around the idea that grantees will have a “dual” experience during their time in this country. Not only working as a teacher but taking serious time and consideration to purposefully experience Korean life. We come to Korea knowing we will live with a host family to help us do just that. Our job goes beyond teaching classes. We are sharing our culture and language with Korean people and in exchange, we’re absorbing as much about Korean culture as we possibly can. The idea being that we will share our discoveries about Korea with our friends, families and communities back in America.

So, why you should make a holiday to a small city north of Daegu in which the city is called "Korea's Industrial Capital"? Yes, the city of Gumi (which is about 30 minutes north of Daegu in Gyeongsanbuk-do) has many factories and companies like LG, Samsung, Toray, LS, and Hanhwa but despite all the factories and companies, there is a place that you and your family can spend a whole day at and have a good time too. Inside this city with the population around 500,000 people is Geumosan Provincial Park. It is not as famous as Palgongsan, but it still has a lot to offer for families that want to get out the big city life and just want to take a short drive somewhere close to Daegu.
First, let’s talk about Geumosan or Geumo Mountain. Geumosan is a mountain that reaches the peak of 977 meters surrounding the Gumi area in Gyeongsangbuk Province.
Geumosan Provincial Park is the major park surrounding Geumo Mountain. As all provincial parks, there is a lot to do here. First you can see Korea’s National Treasure #490, the Maebosal Statue of Mt. Geumo. This is a 5.5 meter high statue curved on a natural rock that is right below the top of the mountains.

As you continue up the mountain, you see Daehye Waterfall. This waterfall is 400 meters above the foot of the mountain which is about halfway to the top. It is 27 meters long. In the winter, the waterfall freezes giving it an amazing sight to see as it looks like an ice castle, or falling ice stuck in the air.
To the right side of the waterfall is a cave. The cave is Doseon Cave. This cave’s history starts with a great monk named Doseon who attained Nirvana in this cave. This cave is on the edge of a cliff which makes it a very interesting but a little difficult and dangerous hike. -continued on p38-

Geumo Lake also has duck boats to enjoy in the summer.

It is at the base of Geumo Mountain in Gumi and it is called Geumo Land. The smallest amusement park in Korea has the usual rides for everyone as all amusement parks have like bumper cars, carousel, a bike that you can ride above and around the amusement park, a small playground, via train as well as a very scary and high Viking ship (a mini Viking for the children) and tagada. If you don't know what tagada is, well according to Wikipedia, tagada is where riders sit in a round bowl with no seatbelts but bars are behind the doors which they hold onto. Then the ride starts to spin, the music plays and with the help of hydraulic arms, the rides start to bounce up and down.
Also there is a skating rink inside the park (which is open all year around), an outdoor swimming pool (in the summer only) and sled riding (for winter only).
Geumosan and Geumo Land is a very short drive from Daegu area or you can take a short train ride and then it is a 15 minute walk from the Gumi Train Station. The hours are from 10:00am to 6:00pm on weekdays and 10:00am to 7:00pm on weekends (from March to September). During the offseason months (October to February), the park opens at 9:30am and closes at 5:30pm on weekdays and closes at 6:00pm on weekends. For more information on Geumo Land, you can call 054) 451-8500 or visit their website at www.gumoland.co.kr

Travel and Nature - Beauty Comes In All Shapes and Sizes
http://daegucompass.com
So, from seeing white cherry blossoms shining on a spring night, or enjoying a cool stream in a valley on a hot summer day, or fallen colored leaves on a wonderful fall day, or even beautiful white snow covering the mountain on a chilly winter day, Geumosan has beautiful sites for everywhere all year long. And, then of course if you take time to visit Geumo Land too, then after enjoying time there with your family, you all can say that you all went to the smallest amusement park in South Korea.
Ravioli, T-Bone Steak Gnocchi, Calzone

Coheart Speaks To The Heart Get Treated Like The VIP You Are
Written by Alex Hernandez / Photographed by Yujeong Lee
The smell of coffee greets you at the door, as you enter Coheart salon and the room opens to a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing cafĂŠ, where you notice hairstylists cutting hair a few feet away. An assistant comes to greet you and take your belongings to a locker room, and from there, the possibilities of what to come are endless. If you are here for a simple haircut then you are not making full use of what a salon in Korea has to offer. There are two branches of Coheart, and they have made their loyal customers here in Suseong-gu for the past 5 years. What sets them apart from other salons? They offer high-quality stylists because the salon itself is making sure each of their stylists advance in their skills through their education program and in-house training. 42
DAEGU COMPASS 2014.DECEMBER
There are nine levels in total, and the staff comes in two or three times a week to train in order to move higher up the ranks. They start as junior stylists and continue to be promoted. Currently there are five in house hair dressers. This past September, Coheart moved down the street and into their new building, with a beautiful outdoor patio that gives customers an amazing view of Suseong Lake. The purpose for moving into the bigger space was to have enough room so customers could get the complete experience, from head to toe. They have a nail salon and a makeup room in the front area that brides use often when preparing for their wedding day. For either acrylic nails or a makeup session, an appointment

is necessary at least a week in advance. Next to the café, you walk down a short hallway, pass the scalp massage area, and into their skin care area called Heart Aesthetic. Italian, French, German products line the wall. Their products are imported, mostly from European countries. The aesthetic area is devoted solely to skin care; private rooms with showers that make you just feel VIP. They offer a couples room, so that couples or friends can enjoy each other‘s company while getting special treatment. The most popular treatment is the back massage, an hour long massage for 90,000 won. If you are interested in dyeing your hair, the price depends on the amount of dye used. Walking to the back room, the staff shows me the L’Oreal hair dyes and the scales they use to weigh the product. So a person with long thin hair may possibly pay the same amount for a person with short thick hair. On average however, a person with long hair will usually pay 100,000 won and a person with short hair will be billed about half as much. I got my own hair cut by one of the four general managers of the salon, a friendly gentleman who -continued on p44-

knew his art. He gave me his tips to fine hair, and some personal tips for my kind of hair, how to moisturize and how to deal with dry hair. He wasn’t afraid of going off the beaten path, and had no problem restyling the undercut I had already had that needed some maintenance work. The L’Oreal products he used smelled wonderful, and he stylized with quick and steady hands while his assistant made sure I was comfortable through the process. They’ve been trained in the art of coffee, so I was quite please when I was offered an Americano after my cut. If you are into Dutch coffee, they happily serve that 44

too. They aim to please, and one of their goals is to be known as the salon with delicious coffee. Coheart salon feels like a day at a spa, it is such a beautiful place that relaxes you and makes the experience of getting a haircut simply relaxing. Do not miss a chance to enjoy this salon if you are in the Suseong-gu area, it was quite a pleasant experience! Daegu Medical Tourism Counts Its Blessings Making Daegu A Healtheir Place To Live Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos by EXCO
As the year draws to a close, the busy team behind Daegu’s medical tourism programs is taking stock of the year’s accomplishments, and they were many. New facilities were built, programs were expanded, and more visitors came to Daegu for a taste of affordable health care and Korean culture. One of Daegu Meditour’s most visible and prolific ventures is the promotional booths set up at many festivals, expos, and other large events throughout the year.
Designed to inform visitors and foreigners about quick tours built around an even quicker medical procedure in the city, the promotional booths have successfully lured customers all year long. At the Preview in Daegu, six Malaysian buyers visited the Taeoreum Oriental Clinic and received oriental medicinal therapy after visiting the promotional booth. Likewise, three Slovakian plastic surgeons went on a familiarization tour at Kyungpook University Hospital and V Plastic Surgery Group during the IWA Regional Conference and an American went to -continued on p48-

Hoo Oriental Clinic and got oriental medicinal therapy after the 4th Asian NIR Symposium. In all, the promotional booths made appearances in over 20 events in the city and elsewhere in Korea including the International Green Energy Expo & Conference, Daegu Beauty Expo, MEDI Expo, Liberty Fest, Chimaek Festival, and the Daegu Fashion Fair. 1200 foreigners dropped by these promotional booths to receive a free health check-up, counseling on site from a doctor, and information about the Meditours in the city. Daegu also expanded its repertoire of promotional materials. Daegu now offers medical maps and program books in English, Chinese, and Russian. The map marks many of the city’s leading medical institutions and points of interest. The program book introduces each medical service and package with prices, required times, and other necessary details. These resources make the city’s increasingly dense medical tourism infrastructure more accessible to foreign visitors. International students, particularly those from China, were a continued focus over the course of the year. In 2014, 90 students and their parents from abroad participated in the Hyo Medical Tour, which allows the parents of international students to come for a medical procedure and small cultural experience. Additionally, EXCO held a special event in June for Chinese international students in the Daegu/Gyeongbuk area. Six local organizations including Daegu Metropolitan City and Dongsan Medical Center introduced the medical facilities of the area and offered a Q&A session. 112 students showed up for the special event. Additionally, Daegu offers a familiarization tour as a generic introduction to the medical facilities of the metropolitan area. In 2014, tour agencies and medical institutes from Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Canada, Russia, and Singapore participated in the tour, increasing Daegu’s visibility in the global medical tourism network. Some of the year’s biggest achievements came toward the end of the year. Daegu sent a delegation to the World Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare Congress held in Washington, D.C. in September. This event marked the first time Daegu was represented in such a large-scale medical convention. In October, the city held the 37th Annual Herb Medicine Culture Festival 48

in Yangnyeongsi. Visitors to the festival had the chance to make and purchase products from cosmetics to herbal teas to ginseng fries, all from traditional herbs. Visitors also had the opportunity to receive a diagnosis and then travel to Taeoreum Oriental Clinic to try the proper traditional remedy. Daegu’s medical tourism team can celebrate their achievements from the past year, but they have their work cut out for them as more cities in more countries compete for tourists seeking medical attention. As always, the city can rely on its people’s innovative and proactive approaches to the industry as a source of inspiration and pride. 2015 should be another exciting year for Daegu’s medical tourism industry. New York, New York (Western Steak)
http://daegucompass.com
Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor
Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

Connoisseur Check out these other great eats around town.

Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
