THE DAEGU COMPASS. JANUARY. 2014.

SPECIAL REPORTS

The newly renovated tower has a few cafes, several restaurants, and an ice skating rink; and remaining from the old tower, a chance to be lowered down slowly from the top of the tower on a steel cable. The new tower feels like an expensive hotel with marble floors, columns, wood trim, and glossy black paint. The ice-skating rink is on the second floor. The columns in the rink look like trees, and the walls are painted to make it seem as if you're skating on a pond in a small town. The room next to the ice feels like a ski lodge. Sometimes the rink closes early for youth hockey practice, but usually it's open to the public. For 5,000 won, you get a pair of skates and can skate for as long as you wish, so long as you don't come off of the ice. When you step off of the ice, your time is up.

TRAVEL

Most foreigners in Daegu have seen or may know about Daegu's tower, now called 83 Tower. For me, it's been somewhat of a North Star, guiding me home to my apartment underneath the tower. The tower was built in 1987 and until recently belonged to a sleepy little amusement park that surrounded the tower, called Woobang Land. I went there when I first came to Daegu, rode some small roller-coasters and ate some carnival type food. I went up the tower, but I don't remember much else about the tower besides the view. About a year ago, Woobang land and the tower were purchased by E-World Co. The park's name changed to E-World, and the tower is now called 83 Tower. E-World remodeled the tower and opened it to the public in October of 2013.

Varyd’s website displays the slogan “much more than clothing.” To explore what the ladies mean by this, I traveled up to Seoul to chat with them. We met at an art fundraiser for a group called International Art Therapy. FLOW in Itaewon hosted hiphop and pop rock artists, along with local visual art and the Varyd clothing. On a three-foot-wide smoking balcony, Vanessa, Rydia and I spoke over clubs beats from across the way.

On October 25th, in its World News section, the Wall Street Journal published an article titled “South Korea Struggles to Confront Stigma of Sexual Assaults.” The piece examined the widespread phenomenon of urging victims of sexual crime to keep quiet. Among others interviewed were Kim Youn-jung (Rydia Kim) and Vanessa Sae-hee Burke, co-founders of a series of talks called Disruptive Voices, taking place in Seoul.

The talks are part of a larger effort, all under the banner of Vanessa and Rydia’s fledgling clothing company, Varyd. Launched several months ago, the company sells tops for women and men, featuring a growing collection of eclectic print designs. The founders describe Varyd’s products as “wearable art.” The tagline is appropriate. More than your typical t-print, many of the Varyd pictures artfully engage the imagination.

ascent. Old adjummas in their oversized visors made their way down and reassured any new travelers that, yes, this trail was feasible for anybody with legs and a working pair of lungs. Yet, by the time we reached the An-il temple, we already needed a breather. Looking behind us, we could make out the twinkling city lights through a layer of trees, and we were reminded that the view at the top would be worth it.

The long, rocky flight of stairs of the trail’s second half were a different animal. Here, there were no street lamps or cement roads. It’s recommended that

you bring a flashlight, but at times we turned ours off and let the moonlight guide our feet. The stony steps snaked their way up the mountain, and it was fun to see the loose string of headlamps and flashlights make their way up and down the mountain like we were on some sort of pilgrimmage. Our pilgrimmage included plenty of rest stops for us weary, unathletic travelers. However, it wasn’t terribly long before we broke the canopy and the steepness of the path disappeared, and before we reached the top we were already rewarded with a great view of the city. A few hundred more feet, this time with the help of modern wooden stairs, and we made it to the observation deck marked by a large, white square visible from the base of the mountain.

High temperatures, crowded trails, and busy commutes to the park can dampen any daytime hiking trip . So why not hike at night? On the northern face of Apsan, tucked away behind a highway and restaurant, is a trail suited for night hikes that leads to an observation deck overlooking the entire city of Daegu. On a windy, cool October evening, I struck out with a confident, if amateur, group of hiking friends for a spectacular adventure.

The 3rd floor is called Foodpolitan, and the design gives you somewhat of an impression that you’re outside. There are brick walls, stone walkways, and a patio seating section. Foodpolitan has lots of food choices. There's Italian gelato, hamburgers, deep-dish pizza, various wines and cheeses, hot dogs, milkshakes, and several Asian food choices. Also, the 83 Pub, in the food court, has, hands down, the best draft beer I've had in Korea. The bartender told me that it's made in Korea, but not available elsewhere except in Seoul. I've had the pale ale and the IPA, and both have been excellent. The counter at the pub is somewhat small, but you're free to take the beer to any of the tables. Ordering a beer

gets you a 10% discount at Globurger, the burger place with amazing milkshakes. You can get a really tasty beer and decent burger for about 10,000 won. The tower is a great place to go with friends because of the huge selection of food and the ability to order from different restaurants and eat at the same table. -continued on p12-

Special Reports - Soaring High

http://daegucompass.com

If you go up to the 4th floor and go outside, you'll be in the 83 Tower Garden. There's an outdoor stage for music in the summers, benches, and a chessboard with 3 meter tall pieces. It's a very well landscaped area that's very pleasant for walking around or reading. If you have passes to E-World, you can take the cable car from the 83 Tower Garden down into the park. There's another restaurant in the garden area too.

Varyd: Much More than Clothing Passion Becomes Reality for Two Young Women Written and photographed by Thomas Gulino / Yujeong Lee

-continued on p16-

15

During our talk the women repeatedly emphasized their desire to promote the ideals of diversity and collaboration. Collaboration for them begins at the drawing board. While a number of Vanessa’s and Rydia’s artworks fill out the greater part of their current collection, the company has begun to feature designs from guest contributors. Putting emphasis on the company as a platform for artists to promote their work, Rydia termed Varyd a “collective playground.”

The thread of variety extends into their choice of models. “We believe the standardized concept of beauty should be broken,” said Rydia. “Therefore, we are open 16

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.JANUARY

to models of all body shapes, sizes, height, ethnicity, as well as age. I personally hate the notion that a woman’s worth drastically decreases after she hits 30.”

Vanessa spoke similarly when expanding on Varyd’s mission: “We're aiming to empower a community and to create an environment of love and ethically balanced beliefs. Our products are free of animals (no wool, silk, etc), everything is made in Korea, our models are stunning, and we don't alter or skew our photos—everything's real and natural.” There, creating fashion in a collaborative environment, Vanessa sees the mission “to empower a community” as having a basic beginning. “Wearing something you love, find interesting,

http://daegucompass.com

something that hugs your body—you carry more confidence, carry more skip in your step…[it] can alter the smallest of moods.”

But achieving Varyd’s mission requires more than good business ethics. That is where Disruptive Voices comes in. The group, to be composed of sub-sections—Disruptive Womyn and Disruptive Men, with hopes to create a Disruptive LQBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and ally) branch—is designed as a “safe space” to discuss various social issues and to share personal stories surrounding a given theme. The first of Disruptive Womyn’s monthly meetings occurred this September. 하위 섹션(디스럽티브 워민, 디스럽티브 맨으로 되어 있으면 후에 디스럽티브 LQBTQA(레즈비언, 게이, 양성애자, 트랜스젠더, 질문 과 협력자)로 만들 수 있길 바란다.)

The Varyd founders understand the need to promote discourse and community at a personal level. Both describe themselves as survivors of sexual violence. According to Rydia, systems of support can be difficult to find in Korea, especially when it comes to matters of victimization. She described a culture in which anything that might bring ‘shame’ to one’s name or family is discouraged from being shared. “This cultural sense of shame,” she said, “…has the power to re-victimize -continued on p18-

a victim especially in the sense that what had happened to them [is seen as] not only their fault, but also by speaking up they become ‘a bad child, a burdensome friend, and a humiliating family member’.

glish radio show called “Rollin` with Rydia,” managing a local bar on weekends, and a recent role in a Korean reality television show. She has taught English for over ten years.

Their backgrounds similarly render the women suited for taking on these meetings. Vanessa, an American from Attleboro, Massachusetts, worked as a rape crisis counselor before coming to Korea three years ago. Her transplant to Korea, she says, was prompted by a time of intense struggle. Rydia, a native of Seoul, has long pursued a wide variety of projects. Such endeavors have included an internship as a fixed guest on an En18

Post-interview I had the chance to spend some time with the ladies and a group of their friends. Throughout the night, I was struck by Rydia and Vanessa’s shared bearing of relaxed confidence and their willingness to laugh. Not only are these women admirably ambitious; they’re great to be around. If Varyd stands for social empowerment, acceptance of others, and creative fashion, Vanessa and Rydia both preach and embody what Varyd aims to be.

A Visit to Kyoto Japan Worth More than One Visit

Written by Emma Thompson / Photos by Mr. Thompson / Translated by Stephanie Yang

Kyoto is a small city in Japan located north of Osaka. It was the ruling center of Japan for more than 1000 years and as such has a wealth of historical interest. Kyoto was saved from obliteration in World War 2 by then ‘US Defense Secretary Henry Stimson, who recognized its historical importance’¹.

These require advance notice of your visit, but you are repaid in their atmosphere of quiet contemplation and serene beauty away from crowds of tourists.

hours or so. Both will drop you at Kyoto Station, a huge towering contemporary building with views of the city from the top floor. Kyoto is a well-organized city, with many people speaking some English. The city seems to run with a quiet sort of easy paced efficiency. Inside Kyoto Station you will find the Tourist Information, with enthusiastic guides who speak a variety of languages and will assist you however you need. Here you can acquire maps for the excellent public transport system and leaflets about the city. Within the Kyoto Station building you can catch the subway north into the city, or out front you can catch a bus to anywhere you want to go. Kyoto also has plenty of taxi’s which, although not as cheap as Korea, are an easy way to get around the city if you are short on time. You can also rent a bike for your stay, but be careful where you park it because the city clears bikes that are not parked in official lots on a daily basis. The city is built in a block structure so it is very easy to navigate.

For a short trip to Kyoto there are some sights you will not want to miss, the most famous of which are the Gold and Silver Pavilions. Both are at the northern end of the city and easily accessible by bus. The Silver Pavilion is set within a small but beautiful Zen garden against a carefully manicured mossy floored hillside of trees. It encourages quiet, and climbing up the hill you get a lovely view of this corner of the city.

The walk down the hill from the Silver Pavilion takes you past gift shops and restaurants, some, like the rabbit gift shop, are a little different to what you find elsewhere. Turning left at the end of this row of shops brings you out onto the Path of Philosophy. This walk was made famous by the Philosopher Nishida Kitaro² who walked there often. Along this walk you will find other unique gift shops and cafés which line the small canal, there are several viewpoints which look across the city. You also have the option to visit several of the smaller temples along the way. Honen-in temple is small but beautiful and is situated a little further up the hill, off the path. This temple is surrounded by towering ancient trees, mossy walks and has some beautiful temple buildings to explore for free.

At the end of the Philosophers path you can walk another mile or so to reach the Nanzen-ji temple. This is one of the larger temples, with traditional protective animals on the roof of the gate and a Zen garden in the back. It also has several sub-temples and an aqueduct. There are many walks around and from this temple which go deeper into the beautiful surrounding countryside.

and its own gift shop and is very much geared towards tourists. The pavilion itself was originally built in 1397² and was built as a retirement villa for a shogun². Sadly you can’t go inside but it is stunning to look at in all seasons.

area of the city. Running alongside the river this area is historically where you might find Geisha’s. This whole area on both sides of the river is well worth walking around. There are tiny streets like Ponto-cho, with restaurants lining either side, and charming streets like Shimbashi-dori which runs along a little river and requires bridges to access the businesses.

Other points of interest around the city include the Botanical Gardens which have a huge array of plants and flowers, well worth a visit for anyone missing their garden at home. Bright Lights in the Night Trail by Night Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos by Abbi Sauro / Yujeong Lee

The trail’s first half was a wide and well-lit cement road leading to a small temple named An-il. The road was steep, but was a good way to stretch the legs and dust the cobwebs out of the muscles before the main

In front of us was the entire sprawl of Daegu, a valley of twinkling city lights and unabashed neon discernable from hundreds of feet up. It was a gorgeous sight and well worth a hike I would rank as easier and much shorter than Gatbawi with more payoff. The first thing we did was unload our back-

packs and had a miniature feast of snacks as our reward for the strenuos hike. Then we got out the cameras and took a wedding’s worth of pictures.

We stayed on the observation deck for about 45 minutes, taking in the illuminating scenery, then decided it was time to head back down. The return trip, obviously, was much quicker and easier. Either

because of the temperature, the time of day, or the relative secrecy of the trail, the observation deck and trail was one of the precious few attractions I’ve experienced that have not been overly crowded. There were enough hikers to make the trail feel safe and well-attended, but far from enough to make you feel claustrophobic. I would also imagine this trail is great for a sunrise or sunset hike.

To get to the trailhead, take the 410 bus, among others, to the stop called ‘Daedeok Restaurant.’ You’ll be noticeably on the edge of town, with the mountain directly across a highway. Across the road and through a highway underpass there’s a sign for an Indian restaurant. Walk up through the parking lot and head west (to the right). Look for signs for the An-il temple and you’re on your way. From the subway, take the Red Line to Anjirang Station and make the first major left outside exit #2. From there, it’s about a 20 minute walk up a hill to the dead end. Turn left and keep walking until you get to the ‘Daedeok Restaurant’ stop. Towering Above the Clouds A Visit to Seoraksan

Written by Emma Thompson / Photos by Mr. Thompson / Translated by Bosun Kim

Seoraksan is a Korean National Park situated on the North East coast of the country. The area is famous for its towering mountains of unique beauty.

To get to Seoraksan you can take a bus from Daegu’s Bukbu terminal to the nearby city of Sokcho. If you are the lucky holder of an international or Korean license you can hire a car from kumhorent.com and drive there.

The city is small but has grown in recent years. There are many fine hotels now on its outskirts including

Hanwha Golf Resort and Del Pino Golf and Resort. There are also plenty of cheaper options including motels, pensions and hostels. The city is small enough to navigate on foot, but there are regular buses from the city centre out to Seoraksan National Park.

The bus will drop you at the park entrance where you pay the small entrance fee. On the left after the entrance you will find the Ranger Centre where you should stop in and pick up a language specific map.

The map shows the variety of walks from this entrance.

If you are a hiker and wish to spend the night in the park you must organize this with the rangers there. There are a variety of walks to do in the park that range from quite easy to challenging. The simplest place to start is the cable car.

A short walk from the park entrance on your left side you will find the cable car building. It will cost you 8500\ for a return trip and the cable car runs every 5 minutes in the high season. Not for the faint of heart the cable car is filled with 20 people and rises 1,200m in five minutes. -continued on p32-

After a short walk you will find yourself on a rocky mountain top where you can really appreciate the rugged beauty of Seoraksan. For those with a daring heart you can continue your climb up the rock to your right with the help of some ropes (you will need sturdy shoes). Be warned, this is a narrow one way street used in both directions without traffic lights so expect some precarious balancing and nifty footwork. From the top you see a 360° view right up to the highest peak and down to the sea. You also feel quite a sense of accomplishment for not very much work!

Once back at the bottom of the valley, you can explore one of the long walks or enjoy the Biryong waterfall by heading to the right of the Ranger Station before the Cable Car. This easy two hour hike goes up the side of the waterfall, and is stunning in autumn when the leaves are changing.

Seoraksan is open all year, although the cable car is closed when there are high winds. Expect queues to the park entrance in the summer and when the trees start changing. There are three entrances to the park; however Sokcho is the easiest to access by public transportation. Once in the park there are a couple of Korean restaurants but if you are hiking for the day take your lunch with you.

If you have had enough of the park, or are visiting in the summer and in need of cooling down, head over to the WaterPia, a water park on the North side of the park. This is a fairly new development and already very popular with visitors.

Also nearby WaterPia is the Teddy Bear Museum, a fun diversion for an hour or so. This museum (one of 5 in Korea) has a teddy bear building factory for kids to get involved and a huge array of handmade teddy bears to see. There are even some teddy bears for specific countries, like the American Indian Teddy Bear. The bears are displayed in a variety of ways, including sunbathing and snowboarding.

Another spot worth a visit is the marina in Sokcho. Traditionally this is a squid fishing city so the boats you will see there are decked out with lamps to attract the squid at night. Check out Squid Street if you are a fan of the Korean dried squid snack and you can find yourself a bargain.

Low Prices and Exemplary Standards Impressed Tourists Head to Daegu! Written by Jinsil Noh / Translated by Jooyoung Choi

Raising awareness of Daegu's Medical Tours On the 14th of last month, Star TV from China was busy filming at a dermatology hospital in Jung-Gu, Daegu. The head director of the hospital emphasized their 'one-stop service' to the reporter, explaining the convenience provided by the hospital. Star TV was filming at this hospital for a segment in their promotion film titled 'A Romantic Tour to Daegu'. The film introduces attractions all around the city, from downtown to Spa Valley. It covers the opening of a new duty-free shop at the Grand Hotel, as well as the famous Yun-a bench (a scene from a soap opera). In fact, Star TV happens to be China's top broadcaster of Korean soap operas and will televise this promotion film as a commercial advertisement between programs.

36

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.JANUARY

But perhaps the film's greatest impact will be its promotion of Daegu medical tourism. The film explores plastic surgery, skin care, dental care, women's health, hair implants and other medical services in Daegu. For this, the producers were consulted by the Council for Daegu Medical Tour Development as well as Daegu City to help inform China of medical tours in Daegu. Star TV admired the medical tour system and Daegu city without stint. "I was surprised by the dentists in Daegu," said Yea-da, a host on Star TV. "A middle-sized hospital in Daegu has such excellent equipment, which could only be found at a university hospital in China. Daegu is leading the industry at least in equipment. In addition, receiving treatment in a pleasant and comfortable

Bennigan’s, Same Great Taste that Won’t Break Your Bank! setting is great as well. Star TV said, "Daegu has the potential to attract foreigners through tourism as well as the medical industry." It also said, "It's time for people to be fed up with Seoul and Busan, which are known for expensive medical costs. Costs are lower in Daegu but quality of service is much better than in Seoul. Also, unlike Seoul with its decentralized facilities and services, in Daegu they are all reachable within 5 minutes. It's a strong advantage." Like Star TV's film, other efforts to promote medical services in Daegu have expanded in recent years. Since starting in Shenyang, China, in 2010, Daegu has extended its international medical tour sessions to Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Kazakhstan and the United States. In August of 2013, the Daegu Medical Tour Information Centers opened their doors in Guiyang and Shenyang, China. Over 2,600 enterprisers, travel agencies and power bloggers from China, Russia and The Philippines

have experienced the medical tour between 2010 and this August for 2013. Daegu City has invested heavily in training professionals recently. In 2012, Daegu City trained 165 professional translators for the medical tours and their marketers, and is focusing on producing 176 medical tour coordinators working in not only medical institutions also in related companies. Those concerned with the various strategies and marketing plans of the medical tour emphasized their goal to make Daegu a leading city of the medical industry.

38

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.JANUARY

Robust Medical Infrastructure As Daegu's formerly-renown textile industry has lost its vigor since the IMF crisis, the medical industry has risen as the next leading industry. As such, Daegu City expends great efforts in developing medical infrastructure and facilitating medical tours. Daegu medical tours have been increasing annually. In 2012, 7,117 medical tourists visited the city, an increase of 29.5% compared to 2010. Also in 2012, the total medical expenses of foreign patients was 61 billion won, an increase of 18.6%

http://daegucompass.com

compared to 2011.. As for expenditures per person, the estimated average is 264 thousand won from each medical tourist. In 2014, Daegu city officials expect that more than 9,000 medical tourists will visit Daegu in 2014. Such an influx of medical tourists also causes a ripple effect in the wider economy. In 2014, increased production and income is expected to be 630 billion won. Thanks to Daegu's robust infrastructure such amazing growth is possible. Daegu has first-class medical institutions and labor forces. The city has four medical schools, an oriental medical school, a medical graduate school of dentistry, twelve general hospitals, about 1,700 smaller hospitals and, if including 800 oriental medical clinics, an estimated 3,200 total medical clinics. Thirty-one of these hospitals have been selected as leading institutions for the medical tours and for inviting foreign patients. Also, there are about 5,000 doctors and 27,000 other medical personnel in Daegu. This powerful material, labor and infrastructure has produced specialized medical techniques in Daegu. For example, Daegu has been credited for its world-class skill in the field of hair implants.

DOUBLES THURSDAYS continued on p36

The first hair implant procedure was developed in Daegu and the sustained rate of yearly procedures is also the best among Korean cities. Twelve foreigners underwent operations at the hair implant center at Kyung-pook University in 2012 and eleven foreigners had operations by September 2013. Plastic surgery such as botox, filler, eye and nose surgery and dermatology are also attracting tourists from China and East Asia seeking affordable prices and industry leading medical procedures. Dentists boast worldclass competitiveness and moderate prices in Daegu compared to Seoul. General medical check-up expenses in Daegu are about 35~40 thousand won whereas in Seoul they are about 50~100 thousand won. Moreover, plastic surgery is 100~200 thousand won less expensive than in Seoul according to the Council for Daegu Medical Tour Development. The medical costs in Daegu are almost half that of Singapore, one-quarter of Japan and one-ninth of America. The Council for Daegu Medical Tour Development says, "The moderate expenses for qualified medical services attract foreign patients to Daegu."

Don't be SAD in Daegu Acupuncture to the Rescue Submitted by Hoo Oriental Medicine Clinic

A man (or person) for all seasons? Thomas More was one in the play 'A Man for All Seasons' but unfortunately, our physical and emotional selves don't follow that axiom. The body fights seasonal change. Thus Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is medically recognized during the month of December and throughout winter, is an example of how a change in the seasons can affect our physical and mental health.

41

There's probably someone you know who's affected by SAD as our Korean skies become overcast and grey, working more during the winter and not going out during the limited daylight hours. It is more commonly observed in those who live at high latitudes (areas farther away from the equator to the north and south) and ironically that's where Korea situated. Seasonal changes are generally more extreme in these regions, supporting the idea that SAD is caused by changes in sunlight availability. Seasonal Affective Disorder can occur during summer with limited symptoms such as weight loss, trouble sleeping,

and decreased appetite. Winter is when it's at its fullest. The winter SAD symptoms tend to be more severe. They include fatigue, increased need for sleep, decreased energy levels, susceptibility to cold and influenza, unwanted weight gain, increase in cravings and a high calorie appetite, difficulty concentrating, and increased desire to be alone. The Korean Donguibogam believes that people and nature are inseparable. The traditional Korean medicine sees yin and yang forces of the seasons coinciding with those of the body. While yang's warmth, color, vitality, and brightness work throughout

the spring and summer months, yin's passivity, coldness, and darkness begin in autumn and continue until spring equinox. Therefore, the winter months, which represent the height of the yin cycle and the water element, can cause those whose constitution tends toward yin to feel the effects of this season more acutely.

Together with a treatment plan created by Hoo Clinic, the two As of aromatherapy and acupuncture can improve your mood and energy balance. Thus, relieving you from the burdens of a depressed, unbalanced bodily system. Try not to think of acupuncture as a reactive mechanism but something proactive to have you in tip top physical or mental shape for the long winter.

Energetic imbalances, which are associated with emotional and physical disturbances in the body, can become more pronounced after a change in weather and sunlight. Western medicine currently treats seasonal affective disorder with light therapy and sometimes with antidepressants. The downside to these therapies is that they carry side effects such as eye strain, headache, irritability, fatigue, insomnia, palpitations, high blood pressure, and reduced libido. Also, these therapies do not address the underlying problems, but merely offer symptomatic relief. Is that enough or would you like something more? Acupuncture, which has shown promising results treating depression by releasing serotonin and noradrenaline-norepinephrine, has no side effects. Along with acupuncture, I also entice the limbic system by using pure, therapeutic grade essential oils such as lemon, wild orange and other uplifting citrus blends. The limbic system, is the area of our brains responsible for controlling mood and the body's circadian rhythms (ironically, useful for those of you coming from long trips home).

The Gassiest Month Is Yet to Come How to Keep Warm without Spending a Fortune Written and photographed by Mike Roy

I just got my December gas bill: a whopping 47,000w. Not entirely unreasonable, considering that some people spend double that per month on phone bills, but then again, it’s just slightly less than what I spent in total from May through December. Not to mention that last year I apparently used twice as much gas in February as in January, meaning that next month I may have to fork over 100,000w. That’s five percent 44

of my salary, or the equivalent of 20 meals out at my favorite restaurant. I’ve been racking my brain, and my friends’, for ways to avoid such a catastrophe. Here’s what we’ve come up with:

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.JANUARY Helpful Tips and Information - The Gassiest Month Is Yet to Come http://daegucompass.com

1) Window blockers. Everyone knows better than to leave windows open, but sometimes even double-paned windows that are locked tight still let in a bit of a breeze. If this is the case in your place, and if you’ve got access to the area outside your window, consider putting up one of these plastic sheets that keep the cold out and the heat in. You can buy them at HomePlus (usually around the automotive section), and all they take to install is some tape and a hairdryer. You’ll feel the difference immediately. 2) Limit the area you heat. If you live in a studio, lucky you, you can ignore this one, but if you’ve got spare rooms, go have a look at your boiler. You can remove the metal case covering the pipes that come out of the bottom, fiddle with some valves, and turn off the heating to the rooms you don’t use. It may take you a few tries to figure out exactly what’s what, but a cold shower or two never hurt anyone, right?

as easy to put on another pair of socks. Or two. I recently discovered that it’s entirely possible to wear two hoodies simultaneously, and have even received a few compliments on the look. (Admittedly, that may say more about my usual attire than about anything else.) Long undies, parkas, and gloves aren’t only for the slopes. 7) Eat hot food. If you consider yourself culinarily adventurous, take the opportunity to try your hand at porridges, roasted or steamed veggies, soups, and stews. There are surely a ton of other strategies out there – if you’ve got any to share, don’t hesitate to drop in on the Daegu Green Living Facebook group, or visit the blog at http://noksaeksari.blogspot.com. Keep an eye out for updates on organic shops, vegetarian-friendly restaurants, and monthly Eco-Film Nights!

3) Speaking of which, if you’re daring enough, incorporate more cold into your shower. Your hair and head aren’t all that sensitive, so it’s definitely possible to do your shampoos cold, provided you contort your body just-so and avoid getting it wet. 4) Get low, get local. Forget couches, beds, and dining room tables. Eat, sleep, and play on the floor, closest to the source of the heat. 5) Turn down the temperature. This should be a no-brainer, but just in case: have a look at what you’re wearing . If you’re in your underwear, something’s wrong. High temperature differentials make the outside feel colder, and also make you more likely to catch colds. 20C (68F) is the suggested indoor winter temperature in many parts, but I’ve found that guests don’t start complaining until about 17C (63F), and even as low as 13C (55F) is bearable for someone as stingy and environ-mental as myself. 6) Layer up! Again, common sense, but sometimes the convenience of pushing the “up” button a few times makes us forget that it’s just

Daegu CVB's website completely reformed and changed last August. It is part of a software service established by the Daegu MICE Information Center in 2012. Its goal is to develop "Daegu MICE tourism portal site with reliable and abundant content." The upgraded website was a result of a survey done by organizers and participants of MICE to have a better way to communicate with visitors coming to Daegu.

Gruesome Playground Injuries The Daegu Theatre Troupe is Back! Written by Daegu Theatre Troupe

After completing a successful sell-out season in 2013, the Daegu Theatre Troupe will begin their 2014 season with an adaptation of Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries. Joseph is a Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright, and had critical success with Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo starring Robin Williams. Gruesome Playground Injuries had its off-Broadway debut in 2011 and tells the story of a relationship between two people that spans two decades. The characters first meet and bond when they are eight years old in the school nurse’s office, the story then moves forward and back throughout the years to when they continue to meet and their injuries become more severe. They share a bond with each other and fearlessly depend on each other too, but never seem to get what they actually need. The show has posed a number of challenges for the two leading actors, Michael Randall and JD Stewart, as all scene and costume changes happen on stage right in front of the audience.

Gruesome Playground Injuries hopes to kick-off the new season with a bang. The show will take place at the Yesul Guekjang On Theatre on January 18th and 19th. Show times and ticket prices will be available on the Daegu Theatre page on Facebook. Alternatively, you can e-mail daegutheatretickets@gmail.com for more information. The show contains strong language and scenes of suggested violence.

Director Daryl Walker has confidence his two leads will handle the delicate nature of each character’s inner and outer turmoil. “I wanted to create a visual piece that strikes an emotional and mental chord with the audience. Stewart and Randall have really managed to get under the skin of their characters, delving into the various ages they have to convey. Watching the whole thing come together has been an exceptional experience, with rehearsals more than three times a week. This style of show really isn’t something you see every day.” Featuring video elements provided by Matt Root, 50

Unknown Mortal Orchestra first dropped into the world in late 2010 as a bandcamp account carrying a single called ‘Ffunny Ffrends’.

‘Ffunny Ffrends’ was everything you imagined it might be – alien beatnik pop music that echoed 60s psychedelia and krautrock minimalism with just a hint of gentle weirdness that suggested its roots might equally lie in the verdant indie of the equally distant New Zealand scene.

Ruban Nielson is a New Zealand native who had transplanted to Portland, Oregon, USA with his band The Mint Chicks. UMO was a project conceived as Ruban’s escape hatch to a new musical dimension where his vision of junkshop record collector pop could be realized in a sound that recalled Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone and RZA jamming on some kids TV theme too dark to ever be broadcast.

After disbanding New Zealand’s the Mint Chicks, Nielson planned to quit music and take on a day job. As a hobby, he continued making psychedelic demos in his basement using samples. Soon, music took over as a career again, and his fun brand of experimental pop ended up in the hands of Fat Possum Records, who released Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s self-titled debut in the early summer of 2011.

In September 2012, Unknown Mortal Orchestra announced that they had signed to Jagjaguwar(Bon Iver, Volcano Choir) and began crafting their second full-length album. UMO’s sophomore album is titled II and was released on February 5, 2013.The first single from the album, entitled “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)”, was first available as a 7″ on their tour with Grizzly Bear. II received wide critical acclaim. Clash Music gave it a 9 out of 10, saying “from opener ‘From The Sun’, which recalls George Harrison-psychedelia, to the tender Family Stone shuffle of the closing of ‘Secret Xtians’, ‘II’ displays both a glowing warmth in its production and a deft use of space that illuminate Nielson’s superbly crafted compositions.” Paste Magazine called the album “a modern, beat-heavy take on ‘60s psych, with plenty of hooks and fuzz to get you hooked and feeling fuzzy.” NME praised Ruban’s ability to turn his songs into “works of warm, fuzzy beauty.” 2012년 9월, UMO 는 Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver,Volcano Choir 등이 속한 레이블) 와 계약했고 그들의 두 번째 앨 범 작업에 착수했다. 앨범의 첫 번째 싱글 “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)” 은 Grizzly Bear와 의 투어에서 7″ 로 가장 먼저 발매되었다.

During the winter of 2013, Unknown Mortal Orchestra capitalized on the success of II and embarked on a world tour. The tour started off with shows in Australia, and hometown shows in New Zealand, followed by several stops in Europe. The band then toured extensively throughout North America with opener

Unknown Mortal Orchestra consistently sold out shows in both the UK/Europe and in North America, and as a result of their success on the road they announced in early April that they would extend their touring. This summer the band performed at a number of major European festivals, including Roskilde Festival, Pukkelpop and Lowlands, and early in 2014 they will debut their sound in South Korea! A December to Remember

New Friends, New Memories with Compass Korea Tours Written by Yujeong Lee / Photo by Hami

This has been a fantastic December. With the holiday season upon us, we take a look back at the events held this December with Compass Korea Tours. We travel to Yeongcheon which is about 1 hour away from Daegu. This allows people to relax on the bus or mingle and make new friends. In the beginning of the month, we experienced some cold weather ATV and played paintball. It was a terrific time. Our day trips are designed to pack as much action and culture into one day. Our group also learned how to make wine and cook some traditional Korean dishes. We work hard to make our tours unique for each group that comes with us. We are planning on new exciting tours for next year. Stay tuned by visiting our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/daegucompass). Thanks everyone for creating special memories with the Daegu Compass! Wine making experience. Our group learned how to make traditional Korean wine. ATV experience. a thrilling ride. They can go pretty fast, but everyone is taught how to control them before getting on. Not for the faint of heart. Our paintball group had a blast. Literally, they had a great time and showed off some slick moves. Group photo with the Daegu Compass. This was a great group! Positive energy all the way! Thanks for coming with us guys! Learning how to make traditional Korean soap. This is an unique experience that only the Compass provides. Making traditional Korean food for lunch. Fresh vegetables and natural ingredients make for a refreshing meal. Another happy group enjoying an overnight trip. We were able to go to the observatory for some star gazing. Thanks everyone for coming with us!
