For the uninitiated, downtown is the only place to go when it comes to finding quality restaurants in Daegu. While there is undoubtedly an abundance of great places to dine at in our fine city’s main hub, more and more pockets of gems around town are gaining deserved notoriety. Nowhere is this notoriety more deserved than in the beautiful neighborhood of Apsan, and no establishment better embodies the sensibility of Apsan than Twelve Kitchen & Bar. Located among the wall to wall cafés which make up the aptly named “Coffee Mountain” Twelve would be easy to miss if not for the glistening sides of ham and chains of sausage which hang in the window. Cured and aged to perfection by chef and co-owner Yoon Kyung Soo, just the sight of these 8

beauties will whet your appetite and give you an idea of the kind of quality you can expect here. The interior of Twelve is subtly decorated (except, of course, for the aforementioned meat hanging conspicuously in the window). The walls are mostly concrete with a few patches of exposed brick. There are four wooden 4-top tables as well as some “bar seating” from which a diner can peer into kitchen and observe some incredibly skilled craftsmen at their work. Aesthetically, the simple black and white menus are in keeping with the overall vibe of the place. This stands in stark contrast to the fireworks show that occurs once the food shows up, both in terms of taste and presentation. The Daegu Compass was lucky enough to be treated

to just some of what Twelve Kitchen & Bar has to offer. After wolfing down a basket of warm, pillowy soft onion focaccia we were presented with a sampler platter from the appetizer list; essentially, a cold antipasti. It included fresh arugula piled on a generous bed of prosciutto (aged two years!), crackers with a ridiculously tasty ricotta-spinach spread and topped with a sundried tomatoes, thin medallions of breaded sirloin, braised arugula and sausage and a sort of DIY caprese salad; balls of buffalo mozzarella with cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. True to authentic trattoria style, this was all presented on a long wooden plank. It was a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. Next we had a pizza margherita. As Twelve was originally a pizza parlor, and a damn good one at that, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no surprise that this pie is a winner; thin, crispy crust and a perfect cheese to sauce ratio. To lighten things up, we next received an organic salad with fresh greens, prosciutto, soppresata, apple and sliced baby beats in a light lemon dressing. -continued on p10-

An aside: Rest assured that organic here absolutely means organic. Lest anyone think the fine owners of Twelve are trying to profit on the strength of a (very) loosely defined buzzword, the Daegu Compass must stress that every fruit and vegetable that enters the premises comes directly from Chef Yoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greenhouse, which is operational year-round. This dedication to fresh produce serves two purposes: firstly it makes the phenomenal flavors and bright colors possible, secondly, it keeps operating costs down (no need to order from purveyors), allowing the savings to be passed on to the customer. Furthermore, morning prep at Twelve is done on a single day basis, that is, the food that is brought in before opening is used that very day or else tossed out, so nothing that arrives at your table has been sitting around more than a few hours. Now, back to the review... 10

With our palettes sufficiently clean, it was time to get back into the heavy stuff. It came in the form of fresh fettuccini in a Bolognese sauce, topped with fresh marjoram, and a calzone the size of a youth-league football. The thick ribbons of fettuccini were the soft in texture and acted as a perfect vessel for the rich, slightly spicy Bolognese sauce. The massive calzone, baked golden brown and stuffed with mozzarella, prosciutto and black olives would hold its own in any pizzeria this side of the Tiber. The prices at Twelve Kitchen & Bar are more than fair, especially when you consider the painstaking processes which go in to not just the dishes, but the very ingredients which comprise those dishes. Diners can expect to fill themselves up on this high-quality cuisine without breaking the bank. Appetizers, which can feed two cost from 8,000 to 17,000 Won. Salads, pizzas and pasta

dishes are all in the 10,000-18,000W range. There are some pricier options as well, like steak (91,000W for a 1kg porterhouse) and the 26,000W handmade ham plate featuring all the different types of ham, which vary by curing method, and aging process, Chef Yoon has to offer. Twelve’s hours are 11am-11pm. They are closed on Tuesdays. To get there by subway, take the red line (line #1) to Hyeunchungno station, four stops south of Ban-

woldang, and get out at exit 1. Walk up “Coffee Mountain” and you’ll find it on your right, next to Jungbu fire station. Alternatively you can take a cab; tell your driver to go to Jungbu Sobangso. Be sure to check out Twelve Kitchen & Bar soon. You won’t be disappointed.

Two months ago, I was able to visit Pann to taste their food and check out their guest house. I wrote in the review that they would be having live jazz music coming soon. Well, the time has arrived!!! Pann holds an intimate jazz concert almost every Friday night. The jazz musicians play two show times, 8:309:30 pm and 10-11 pm. Both sets are different songs, but the same musicians. Also, the bands change weekly, so you get a different experience each time! On the particular day that I went, the Sung Ki Moon Trio (성기문) was playing. It consisted of the Sung Ki Moon (pianist), Kim Myung Hwan (drummer), and Kang 12

Seong Min (contra base). They played a variety of big hit songs, such as Barbara Streissand’s “The Way We Were”, Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”, and “Besame Mucho”. The bands that are brought to Pan are top-notch bands from Seoul and other locations. The Sung Ki Trio was not a disappointment in the least. They were an excellent, professional band, as I’m sure all the other ones will be too. The cost for these wonderful jazz experiences is an excellent deal! It’s only 5,000 won! Why the cover charge? It’s so that they can have the highest quality

of performers available. Also, they will be doing a special deal of 25,000 won per person. This includes the entrance fee, plus a glass of wine and a good sized BBQ platter. The platter will have some sort of meat (chicken, pork, squid, or sausage) and vegetables. Sounds like a great deal to me! So you better believe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be spreading the word about this place! When I got there for the second showing, the place was packed, wine was flowing, and everybody was clapping their hands, singing along, and having a great time! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a small, intimate place to bring a few close friends, or go on a date with your loved one. The remodeled Japanese garage lends its self to perfect acoustics! I was sitting right in the front, and I could hear the music well, and still be able to have a conversation with my friends, if I wanted to.

It might seem like it’s difficult to find, but it’s actually rather quit easy! If you are at Junang-ro Subway Station, take the Primall exit number 1. Head away from the downtown area and make your first right. Then make your first left, look to your right and you’ll see the fire station and the entrance to the school. Just after the school gates, you’ll see a small alley. Head down that and you can’t miss the beautiful Pann building! I hope you all head out there and enjoy your time as much I did that night!

Reopening the Daegu Citizens Hall Asia Orchestra Festival

The Daegu City Hall has been under renovation from 2011 to 2013, and has reopened as a concert-only the¬ater. The hall was told to be remodeled since its facilities were lagging behind. After the remodel, it has still kept its original shape, but now has a more modern style. It will now play a role as a representative local concert hall and cultural space embracing new cultural trends in our city. The 'Asia Orchestra Festival (AOF)' will be held at the Daegu City Hall, from Friday, November 29, 2013 to Saturday, January 25, 2013 to celebrate the reopen¬ing of the hall. Ten orchestras (from Korea and abroad) will participate in the festival and perform beautiful clas¬sical music for two months; the Chinese National Sym¬phony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Daegu Symphony Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Daejeon Philharmonic Or¬chestra, the Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gwangju Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gyeongbuk Provincial Symphony Orchestra. The China National Symphony Orchestra (with conduc¬tor Li Xinchao), the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (with conductor Kazushi Ono) and the Taiwan Philharmonic (with conductor Shao-Chia Lu) have been specially invited from around Asia to honor the festival. 16

They will visit Daegu for the first time and will look forward to seeing the classical music fans of Daegu: the city of performance culture. This is also a good chance for local audiences to enjoy concerts by foreign orchestras which usually only take place in Seoul. Next year marks the 110th anniversary of Dvorak's death, so orchestras will commemorate his music at the festival. The Taiwan Philharmonic will play his Sym¬phony No.8. The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra will play his Cello Concerto and Symphony No.9 'From The New World'. Also, Symphony No.9 will be played by the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra (with conductor Geum No-sang). Besides the repertories above, the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra will play Rachmaninoff's Sym¬phony No. 2, the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra (with conductor Geum Nan-sae) will do D. Shostakovic's Symphony No.5, the Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra (with conductor Kim Hong-je) will perform O. Respighi's 'Fontane di Roma’ and 'Feste Romane’, and the Gyeo¬ngbuk Provincial Symphony Orchestra (with conductor Park Sung-wan) will perform G. Mahler’s Symphony No.4 with Soprano Lee Hwa-young. The Animamix Biennale

Daegu Art Museum (d am) is on a roll. Daegu citizens were lucky enough to enjoy the Kusama Yayoi exhibition this fall, a show that usually finds its home in cities like New York and Paris. It seems like a difficult exhibition to follow up, but d am, under the direction of Kim Sun Hee, has outdone itself again. The new exhibition, which will be open by the time you read this, pays homage to cartoons, comics, animations, and other popular culture. Titled Animamix, the bienalle shares works of more than a dozen contemporary artists, all dealing with characters that have become part of the public consciousness. The Animamix Biennale is not a traditional one-location show. The exhibition will be held simultaneously in cities around Asia. Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, Macao, and Beijing will all exhibit their version of Animamix at the 18

same time, featuring artists from the respective regions. The thread that connects all the art is very visible, and through a variety of mediums each artist approaches the theme with their own voice. Walking through the museum you’ll see Yoo Yungwun’s piñata’s, Kim Taeyon’s illustrations, and Lee Dongi’s inflated blimp. There is even a special screening room, built of plastic crates into a tower, that will be showing Academy Award winning films from artists all over the world. It’s pretty amazing that Daegu is again part of such a largescale and international event. Daegu’s version of Animamix is (naturally) host to a plethora of Korean artists. I’ve listed some of the artists and their work above, but here are a few more pieces of info that should nudge you in the direction of the museum:

•Wee Young Il’s work takes common superheroes and pieces them together into some sort of Frankenstein über-superhero. The amalgamated figures hulk (pun intended) through screenprinted cityscapes to the dismay of onlookers. •Jung Moon Gyung’s works are going to be hard for you to miss because of their scale. Her stuffed Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse animals are massive. As viewers walk around these pieces they’ll notice that the tattered look is because they are well worn, but because, they have actually been turned inside out. This inversion reveals that their interiors contrast greatly from their polished and welcoming exteriors. •Shin Gi Hoon’s work is reductive in a sense, as the artist plays a sort of executioner to toy figurines. Documented and displayed in a video piece, the artist takes models and toys of popular cartoon stars and slowly sands them down into particles. From top to bottom, he reduces these objects into dust. •Lee Jae Ho may be an artist whose work you’ve already seen first hand. If you had the luck to catch one of the art subways that were traveling through Daegu in October you saw his carriage, decorated with black and white monsters. He’s been given an entire wall for Animamix, which he has painted from floor to ceiling with green creatures, peppering some of the areas with smaller drawings. •Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis share their film titled “When the Day Breaks,” a beautiful example of rotoscope animation. It’s both funny and poignant, and follows a pig through her city after she has witnessed a death. This animation has won over 40 prizes around the world, due to its excellent story and its life-like animation. Regardless of your relationship with art, this exhibition is so great because of its accessibility. The work functions on a lot of different planes, and allows viewers to experience it on a base level (“that’s cool!”), or a more theoretical one (“what are they trying to say?”). Daegu Art Museum has once again brought the city something that deserves our time.

At Search for Spirits on the Island of Rocks, Wind and Women At Search is a full length documentary film seeking to preserve shamanistic practice and shrine religion of Jeju Island, South Korea. Written by Giuseppe (Joey) Rositano

18 Months, Over 500 Hours of Footage

As a popular tourist destination in South Korea, Jeju Island has risen to fame predominantly for its natural wonders: hiking trails in abundance, scenic ocean views and South Korea’s highest mountain. It is possible to experience these in just a few short days, but staying on the island a bit longer or even making it a home provides the opportunities to get a deeper understanding and appreciation of some of the more interesting aspects of Jeju. Documentarian Giuseppe Rositano, Jeju Island resident of 7 years, explores some of these more interesting aspects of Jeju life, specifically the shamanistic beliefs and shrine religion of Jeju Island that is in danger due to the rapidly declining population of believers. Rositano’s film is currently in post-production.

Film Inspiration

Giuseppe has lived on Jeju Island for 7 years. The project idea came to him gradually he realized there was a very complex belief system being played out right under everyone's noses. While many of his friends native to Jeju had a vague notion of these beliefs and practices, very few of them had any precise knowledge of them.

Background Information

Spanning the course of 18 months and accumulating more than 500 hours of shamanistic ceremonies and traditional storytelling on film, Rositano captures the spiritual life of 5 villages through exploration of their native deities and traditional oral stories that have been passed down through generations. pantheon, are quickly disappearing. At Search is an attempt to preserve these unique indigenous beliefs. Each village on Jeju Island has several shrines in which local deities specific to the island are 'seated'. Each of these deities corresponds to a 'bonpuli' or oral myth. With an adventurous spirit, this documentary sets out to capture the retelling of these 'bonpuli' legends in the voice of what is likely the final generation of elders who received the stories from their parents and grandparents. Sadly, younger generations are seldom aware of these stories which serve as the cornerstones for their grandparents' spiritual lives and cultural identity. With over 400 shrines on the island and a total of 18,000 gods on Jeju, that's quite a loss to humanity's cultural history!

as tourism is concerned. But I miss having a pristine beach to myself, even at times in mid-summer. There is a constant stream of people hiking through the villages now which has breathed new life into them. What is your experience with film making abroad? Almost none. I made a silly film about a suitcase in Spain once, but it wasn't a serious project.

When did you move to Jeju? 7 years ago.

What is your experience with film making on Jeju? What changes have you seen since arriving? The island has changed completely. There were no trails and many of the beaches weren't more than gravel roads with a handful of tourists. Many of the places developed with resorts and tourist parks were farmland or wild land. You could only get a cup of coffee in Jeju and Seogwipo city and even then you had to wait until early afternoon for them to open. The quality of the environment has improved a lot as far

My experience was gleaned from this film alone. I learned a lot particularly when we had the first 30 minute previews when I really had to develop excerpts for an audience. How did you first become interested in Jeju shamanism? The film started out exploring the local idea of spirit possession and ghosts. I would ask people if they'd

ever had someone in their family be possessed (most had!) and what the nature of the soul was, stuff like that. Then I realized there was a whole religion here associated with shamanism and the telling of myths. Soon after that I went to the first village with a Korean friend. My friend was skeptical that anyone in the village would remember the myths but I somehow knew they would, the old people anyway. Sure enough, after about an hour in the village we had a crowd around us telling us the old stories. This scene will actually make the final cut of the film I think. What makes Jeju shamanism in particular unique? It shares many characteristics of shamanism across Japan, Mongolian and Russia. I think it's unique though possibly because it's been contained by the island. It's a very strong phenomenon that has withstood many threats but could be on its last legs. The myths, the manner in which they are learned and expressed, particularly the snake spirit worship are entirely unique to Jeju. It's actually a combination of many folk-beliefs with suspected origins from all around Asia that have melded over time. Inland and seaside villages have distinct ways of worship and there are regional differences within Jeju too. What are your major goals for the film? The most important goal is to raise the issue with people on Jeju that this is their cultural heritage, the mythology associated with shamanism, and that they are neglecting to take an interest. The second goal is to debut at the widest reaching festival we can manage. Why is Jeju shamanism important? It's a living system of oral tradition. It's also an example of a religion that some would write off as undeveloped superstitious beliefs, but shamanism isn't like that at all. It's a highly developed system with rules, myths, morality, hierarchal structure that religious systems have. Looking at Jeju mythology we can get a sense of what the god cults of Greece were like, for example, how they might have functioned in practice. I believe the canon of -continued on p30-

stories is important as well, which is the main focus of the film. Myths tend to display cultural values but also have universal appeal as all cultures' myths are related. Jeju myths are yet another unique body of literature we can turn to for study and inspiration. Jeju shamanism is most important to the people of Jeju, yet many residents have little real understanding of it. How has shamanism evolved through Jejuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history? As I understand it, there have been many migrations to the island. Some scholars suspect aspects have come in from southeast Asia and that the snake worship migrated from India. Influence from Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia too seem to play a role. There has been suppression from forces pushing Confucianism on the island as well. There was a famous incident a few hundred years ago that everyone in Jeju knows about referred to as 500 temples and shrines. A visiting dignitary from the mainland burned hundreds of shrines but still didn't succeed in destroying the practices and myths. Shrines were destroyed again in the events of the 4.3 massacre. But the people rebuilt them. I was at a ceremony in a shrine where there is a tree which was burned in the massacre but is now held up by a brace, this is one of the trees that is several hundreds of years old used as an old village marker. The tree is still thriving. The shaman commented that many people had died in the massacre in the village. People are talking so openly about the massacre now and that is inspiring.

What have been the effects of tourism on shamanism? Does Jejuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tourism department use traditional shamanistic icons and beliefs to market itself? Yes, very much so. And they are interested in developing it more as an attraction. Unesco has designated the Young Deung goddess ceremony as a protected cultural asset which is fantastic but she is only one of Jeju's hundreds of gods that are still worshipped though in declining numbers. I hope the documentary will show what the real practice looks like and what form it actually takes amongst the people. People have fanciful and romantic ideas about shamanism here but it should be seen too in actual practice not through the distorted lens of culture parks. How do you balance your role as an outsider to Jeju in your approach to documenting shamanism? I go into interviews as person to person. I don't focus on being an outsider at all. I let the people I meet tell their story. They are the authority. Some of Jeju's academics I think are nervous about this but I'm not interested in pursuing the documentary in any other way. I want to hear the stories from the source. What the people think and feel. Research has been helpful and I am indebted to the local scholars' work, but religion and myth are fluid things that change over time. Local scholars recognize this fact as well.

Is Jeju shamanism tied to other defining Jeju traits such as dialect and geography? How has the reduction in practice affected these aspects of Jeju? There are two distinct peoples in Jeju, the young generation and the old. The older generation speaks a different language and practices a different religion. Its a situation where two generations are actually two different cultures. The shamanistic myths are tied to the dialect because the oral versions are taught and learned in dialect, though people can tell versions in standard language as well. The decline of the dialect and the displacement of communities due to young people leaving their villages are tied for sure.

Based on your research, what is the future of Jeju shamanism? Its hard to say. It's survived despite so much opposition. Is it just the belief system of farmers, fishermen and women divers? Is it unsuitable for the modern era as the nature of the lifestyles associated with these endeavors shift? We can't say that because Japan embraces similar practices even today in Shinto. I think it will be recognized more and more. More initiatives will be made to preserve the practices and the shrines. In fact, scholars in Jeju are working toward this all the time. What will be the focus and motivation behind the preservation, that's what concerns me.

What do you envision as Jejuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future as it moves away from tradition? I'm sure Jeju will continue to prosper as an agricultural power and tourist destination. It seems, in contrast to Japan where shrine worship is embraced in the modern era, that Koreans have little interest in this sort of tradition as far as in actually maintaining the rituals. I see preservation for sure, but its scope is limited.

Though an uneasy armistice was brokered between the socialist Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the UN-supported Republic of Korea, both Koreas are still technically at war, even sixty years after the war ended. Korean. While there are many obvious flaws with the current situation in North Korea, there are positive aspects of the country that the western media are reluctant to share. This curiosity I had to learn more about our northern neighbours influenced me to book a tour to the DPRK and visit the DMZ from ‘the other side’. 이상하게도 이러한 사실들은 매년 호기심으로 가득한 수십만명의 관광객을 끌어들이는 틈새관광산업으로 성 장하게 되었다. 이 여행에는 시작부터 마지막까지 압도 적으로 촘촘하게 짜여져 있는 보안도 포함되어 있다. 많 은 여행상품은 자신의 이야기를 들려주는 탈북자들을 고용하고 있다. 탈북자들의 이야기가 경험에다가 개인 적인 사정을 덧붙인 것이지만 필자는 북한에 대한 모 든 것에 대해 계속해서 비판하는 내용을 들으며 여행 이 선전용이라는 느낌을 받았다. 북한의 현재 상황에 대 한 명백하게 많은 결함이 있지만 서방매체에서 공유하 기 꺼려하는 긍정적인 측면도 있다. 우리의 북쪽 이웃 에 대해 더 배워야겠다는 이러한 호기심은 북한으로의 여행을 예약하게끔 했고, 다른 쪽에서 DMZ를 방문하 게 만들었다.

Having the unique opportunity to visit the world’s most militarized border while being in the world’s most secretive state was surreal. As our tour bus traveled through the lush countryside on our journey from Pyongyang, this was the first major contrast that I noticed. In South Korea, there had been a lot more security and military patrolling the roads with endless amounts of barbed wire fencing and watch towers. In complete contrast, the drive in the north was one of picturesque natural beauty. Overall, the DMZ experience from the north was a lot more laid back. We were given more freedom to roam around the surrounding area, though obviously still restricted to some degree, and taking photographs was encouraged. Our DPRK soldier, who was our tour guide for the day, became very interested in learning more about the south when he found out that I lived there. He wanted to know my opinion on reunification as well as the opinions of South Koreans on this matter. He also wanted to learn more about the South Korean economy.

Whether this means he’s unhappy with his life would be an assumption filled out from what I read in the news. On the other hand, the conversation struck me as just a guy asking after an estranged sibling. While a short visit to North Korea certainly isn’t a tell-all of what life is really like on the other side, it does offer an alternate, more personal perspective on the current situation. I go by the name Richarquis de Sade. I've been living in Korea since May 2009, and I bought my first DSLR (a Canon EOS 1000D) in June or July of that year. I had previously owned a little Canon A470 Powershot point-and-shoot, which I loved using, but often found did not do what I wanted it to do. The shots in my head just didn't come out as I imagined them. knew I wanted to take photography more seriously, and learn to shoot as I envisaged in my head. So, after a few years of constant internet articles and video tutorials on technique and theory, not to mention some pricey investments in the right equipment, and of course, a hell of a lot of practise... How does macro photography compare to normal photography? 매크로 포토그래피는 일반 포토그래피와 어떤 차이점이 있나요?

Macro is a unique area of photography. So much of everyday photography is about catching what we can see in front of us. Macro is about catching what we mostly can't see, because it's too small for the naked eye to see in the kind of detail that a regular subject

allows us to. There are thousands of unique and fascinating vistas all around us, but most people never see them. I am constantly intrigued by the promise of what these tiny worlds have to offer. What type of equipment do you need for macro photography? 매크로 포토그래피를 위해서는 어떤 장비가 필요한가요?

What are the main principles to think about when shooting macro photography? 매크로 포토그래피에 임할 때 제일 중요한 원칙은 무엇 입니까?

Patience. This is a supremely important aspect of macro shooting. You're working with razor thin depth of field (DOF) and with the specialist lenses I use, the tiniest movement of either your subject or camera can throw all your preparation off, forcing you to reframe and/or re-focus. It can be infuriating, but you soon learn that it pays off when you get the right shots. Also, because of that miniscule DOF, you don't have the luxury of just minimizing your aperture to sharpen your detail - You need to decide what your primary points of focus are, and settle for what you can get. There are techniques such as stacking (taking multiple shots, each focused on a slightly different plane, and combining them in photoshop for an overall increased DOF) but that bores me, personally. I like catching the single moment in camera, in one shot, keeping my editing restricted to colouring and tonal adjustments only. There are ways of shooting macro on the cheap, such as extension tubes which attach to the lens, or reversing a regular lens (which works much like looking through binoculars the wrong way), but I am a firm believer in the right lens for the job. I started out with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX-DG macro lens, which, for its very affordable price, gave some exceptionally good results. I'd recommend the Sigma EX lenses to anyone interested in getting good sharp shots at a reasonable price. However, I have upgraded, and I now shoot with 2 of Canon's specialist macro lenses - The EF-180 f/3.5L (1x magnification) which is a large and heavy lens, but one which performs superbly - Crisp, bright colours, extremely sharp detail, very shallow depth of field at maximum aperture, and silky smooth bokeh. The other macro lens I use is Canon's most obscure - The single purpose MP-E 65 f/2.8, which ranges from 1 to 5x magnification. With this lens on a full frame 35mm sensor, at full 5x magnification, a real life shot measuring 5mm high by 7mm across will completely fill the frame. The DOF with this lens, at full 5x magnification, is about 0.25mm - There's simply no room for error when you're dealing with such an extraordinarily narrow range as that. Obviously, working with extreme macro lenses like this is not for everybody. There are many macro lenses made by Canon, Nikon, Sigma, and others, that suit a more casual macro shooter than myself. Other things you'll need if you start taking it as seriously as I do are a tripod, a macro rail, and a shutter release cable. For lighting, you'll want a good external flash with radio trigger, a ring flash for the end of your lens, or, if you can afford it, something like Canon's MT 24 EX twin macro flash system. Can you talk about some of the settings you use with your ISO, f-stop and shutter speeds to capture good macro photos? 좋은 매크로 사진을 찍기 위해서 ISO, f-stop이나 셔터 스피드의 설정에 대해 이야기 부탁 드립니다.

Right, so you've got your fancy lens, and your tripod, and your macro rail, and your flash, or whatever combination of the aforesaid that you like. So how do you get those freeze frames of a jumping frog, or the ultra close up of the butterfly's face against what appears to be a jet black studio background? Macro is all about fast shutter speeds, if you're shooting wildlife, as I like to do. The subjects are often moving very fast, so you can't afford slow shutter, or you'll lose a lot of shots to motion blur, even if you're using a tripod. I often like shooting at a moderate distance (20-30cm from my subject) in bright daylight, allowing a fast shutter speed, while maintaining a nice narrow aperture and low ISO. Without flash, and using the EF 180 lens, I often shoot at ISO 100, at maybe f/9 to f/16, with a shutter speed of around 1/80 to 1/200 of a second, depending on the strength of the sun. However, for the work I do with the MP-E 65, shooting from a moderate distance is physically impossible. The -continued on p44-

lens cannot actually focus from any further than 10cm away from the subject at 1x magnification, and at 5x magnification, no further than 4cm away from the subject. With this kind of proximity, the light on the subject is obstructed by the shadows from the camera and lens. This means flash is vital to both properly illuminate the subject and still allow the high shutter speeds necessary for capturing a blur free image of a fast moving insect. With the MP-E 65 at full 5x magnification, 3-4 cm from my subject, I usually shoot at ISO 100, f/16, at about 1/160 to 1/200 of a second. I'd love to shoot faster, but my flash has a maximum sync speed of 1/250 of a second, and I like to stay below that, rather than risk losing the shot. Where are some of your favorite places to shoot in Daegu for good macro photos? 대구에서 매크로 사진을 찍기에 최적화된 장소들이 있습 니까?

Well, I'm new to Daegu, but I'm fortunate enough to be living only about 200-300m away from the amazing Bongmu Lake. It's right on the outskirts of the city, just north of the airport, so it's where the development ends, and nature begins. The place is absolutely teeming with insect life in the summer. I saw dragonflies, wasps, ladybugs, butterflies, moths, cockroaches, centipedes, earwigs, scarab beetles, praying mantises, aphids, and plenty more I don't know the names of. There's even a terrarium that grows orchids and breeds butterflies, so you can go in there and get right up close and personal with your subjects. Of course, when it's 40'C outside, and about 90-95% humidity inside the terrarium... Well, that's not so much fun. Back in Changwon, where I lived prior to Daegu, there is a wetlands area named Junam Reservoir, which has lesser amounts of insect life, but still enough to make it worth the trouble. However, let me finish by saying that the beauty of macro is not in being by the ideal locations, but by learning to look at the world in a different way. In so much as most people don't notice these details, macro allows you to create a landscape as much as capture it. It's really up to you to just develop a new way of seeing what's right there under your nose, every day of the week. 저는 대구에서의 경험이 별로 없지만, 봉무 공원에서 200m-300m 정도 떨어진 곳에 사는 것이 정말 행운이 라고 생각합니다. 공항 북쪽 도시 외각에 위치해 있어서 개발과 자연이 공존하는 곳입니다. 여름에 이 곳은 곤충 들로 가득한데 이 곳에서 저는 잠자리, 말벌, 무당벌레, 나 비, 나방, 바퀴벌레, 지네, 집게벌레, 풍뎅이, 사마귀, 진딧 물 등 이름도 모르는 벌레들을 보았습니다. 난초와 나비들 을 기르는 테라리움도 있어서 가까이 촬영하는 데 적합한 곳입니다. 당연히 40도 이상의 기온과 습도가 90-95% 가까이 되는 날 테타리움 안에 들어가 촬영하는 것은 결 코 재밌지 않습니다. 대구 전에 살았던 창원의 주남 저수 지에서는 이 곳보다는 적은 곤충들이 살고 있지만 꽤 괜찮 은 샷들을 많이 건졌습니다. 하지만 여기서 저는 매크로 포토그래피가 좋은 장소를 찾는 것이 아닌 세상을 다른 시

Looking to do some quick holiday shopping for your loved ones back home? Look no further than picking up Korean souvenirs! While Insadong in Seoul is often hailed as the best stop for such knick-knacks, Daegu also has a decent selection from which to choose. Three such shops easily come to mind and all three are easily accessible and found in their own unique districts within Daegu. Everyone should know where the “Colorful Daegu” sign is, behind the open-air amphitheater in Duryu Park. Adjacent to that sign is the Daegu Tourist Information Center, which has an attached wing with souvenir shop. Among the souvenir shops in Daegu, this has to be the largest. Being the largest, there is lots of space to pleasantly move around and do some browsing before zeroing in on any purchases. Large gifts like Korean-made wooden furniture to small trinkets line the sale floor and walls. Expect to pay a heavy price for the items here since they do deal with a larger variety in a prime location. So what do they offer? Well, in addition to the finely-crafted wooden furniture, there are also tapestries, original artwork, and Korean drums. Looking for kitsch? They also have the typical Korean fans, shiny jewelry boxes, and bookmarks which make obviously great stocking

stuffers. There are also many accessories incorporating the Korean roof tile motif. Local persimmon wines from south of Daegu to fermented mountain parsley extract from Palgong Mountain to the north, this souvenir shop is perfectly situated between the two and represents the greater Daegu region very well. In addition to selling souvenirs, the center sponsors an annual contest to develop new souvenirs which reflect the culture of Daegu for tourists visiting the city. This means you can find truly unique items on display that you wouldn’t necessarily find in other such shops in Korea. Hours: Daily, 9am-6pm (closed from 12-1pm for lunch) Located in Seomun Market is another can’t-miss souvenir shop called DaeDongSa. While navigating Seomun Market can be a big hectic, here’s a quick guide to get there. Enter the market via the East Gate #2 (off the main road). Walk straight until you see a large neon sign which reads: 4지구. DaeDongSa is there, in Block 4, and is stall #907. Being a stall crammed in with other sellers, everything in this shop seems very compressed. Shelfspace is certainly a commodity here. So, there is less

DaeDongSa has many similar items as the shop in Duryu Park, but focuses more on smaller items: from Andong masks to wooden duck sets. These ducks, when placed in a couple’s home, symbolize harmony when facing each other or arguing when one is turned away from the other. One special featured item here is the unique handbags made in TongYeong, commonly called the “Venice of Korea”. The handbags are beautifully designed and available in a vast array of styles and designs.

From the time I arrived in Korea, I’ve heard nothing but these foreigners squawk about how great the shopping is. Lies I tell you! Yeah, there are a few things I saw that I thought to myself, “Wow that’s really nice…for a dish rag”. Okay I regress. Perhaps that’s taking it too far but Daegu, the self -proclaimed fashion capital of South Korea, had yet to produce my go-to shopping destination, Thrift Stores. That is until now. 한국에 도착했을 때부터 나는 외국인들로부터 쇼핑에 대 한 정말 좋은 이야기들만 들어왔다. 하지만 거짓말을 해 보자면, 내가 본 몇몇 물건들은 “우와, 정말 멋진데! 행주 로는...”이라고 생각했던 것들도 있었다. 그래, 한 발 물러 서겠다. 아마도 내가 너무 멀리 갔던 것 같다. 남한의 자칭 패션의 수도라고 말하는 대구에는 아직 내가 찾는 쇼핑 명 소인 중고품 할인상점을 아직 찾아볼 수 없다. 하지만 그 것도 지금까지였다.

leads on locating my beloved. It quickly dawned on me that perhaps finding a thrift shop in Daegu was like being Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie, “The Beach”. Possibly the locale of the elusive ”Thrift Shop” was only privy to a select few? 정보를 찾는 대부분의 한국에 온 신참들처럼, 나도 사랑 하는 것들을 찾기 위해 몇몇 구체적인 단서를 얻고자, 희 망을 가지고 인터넷을 샅샅이 뒤지면서 끊임없는 시간(아 마도 몇 분?)을 보냈다. 나에게는 대구에서 중고품 할인점 을 찾는 것이 아마도 영화”비치”에서 레오나르도 다빈치 가 되는 것과 같다는 것이 분명해졌다. 아마도 찾기 어려 운 “중고품 할인점”의 위치는 단지 선택 받은 소수에게만 허락되었던 것인가?

This is where I’ll tell you that there are serious “benefits” of having a seasoned veteran from Daegu as a friend. One brisk evening on a stroll through downtown, my friend nonchalantly mentioned, “This is where all the vintage shops are.” He unknowingly pointed out the promise land to me. Here I was in a nirvana of thrift stores located in downtown Daegu.

I could barely contain my excitement. Inside I was doing a Miley Cyrus twerk dance number. I immediately took a picture of a recognizable landmark to ensure that I would be able to find my way back for my next shopping extravaganza. 이쯤이 바로 대구에서 경험 많은 베테랑을 친구로 둔 진 정한 “혜택”에 대해 말할 때 인 것 같다. 어느 상쾌한 저 녁에 시내를 거닐다가, 내 친구가 무심하게 말을 꺼냈 다, “여기가 모든 빈티지 가게가 있는 곳이야.” 그는 아 무것도 모르고 나에게 “약속의 땅”을 가리켰다. 여기서 나는 대구 시내에 위치한 중고품 할인상점의 무아지경 에 빠졌다. 나는 흥분을 감출 수 없었다. 가게 안에서 나 는 마일리 사이러스의 춤을 추고 있었다. 나는 다음 번 에 특별한 쇼핑을 하고 싶을 때 찾아 올 수 있도록 즉시 알아볼 수 있는 지형물의 사진을 찍었다.

For those who have yet to embark into the wonderful world of thrift shopping, it can be a game changer during your stay in Korea. This is especially true for those having difficulty finding sizes. Let’s not pretend that most westerns are the same size our Korean counterpart. This fact can make a simple shopping trip into things that nightmares are made of. Well no worries, unlike regular department stores thrift shops carry a multitude of sizing. This means fewer trips to Seoul or hopes of getting the right size on the internet. And to top it off, prices are significantly cheaper compared to a department store. On my first trip out I was able to purchase a cardigan for $5,000 won and a sweater for $3,000 won. However, buyers beware. I figured out extremely quickly that thrift shops in Korea do have their special quirks. Like not having a little something called “price tags”. No biggie right?? It only means you are at mercy of shopkeeper, who has already pegged you for a sucker, to give you a fair price. 하지만, 구매자들이여, 조심해라. 나는 한국에 있는 중고 품 할인점에는 그들만의 별난 면이 있다는 것을 알아냈다. 가격표라고 불리는 작은 것이 없다는 것 정도? 별로 큰일 이 아니잖아? 그렇지? 그것은 단지 당신가 상점 주인에게 휘둘리고, 그는 이미 당신을 바보라고 단정짓고 난 후 꽤 나 공정하다는 가격을 제시한다는 것을 의미한다.

So guess what? This is where you break out your broken Korean, flaying hand signals and you negotiate down that price! This November we took some happy adventure seekers on a journey. We first headed to an amazing wine tunnel, where we were able to sample some great Korean wines. This was located Korea's beautiful countryside. We weren't able to pick grapes this time, but they vineyard did have grapes for us to make our very own wine. ence that left us feeling a little light headed and full of smiles. We hopped back onto the bus and road off to a fabulous traditional Korean BBQ lunch. This really filled us up. Koreans sure know how to eat. I ate so much, I could hardly move. After a short nap, to let us digest, we moved onto the next and most exhilarating part of the adventure. ATV riding!

Riding with the wind whipping stinging your eyes, is such a great experience. We were able to ride for 2 hours and test different models as well. The guide took us along the river and even into the river, which was a bit cold, but in the end an exciting time. The ATVs were fairly new models as well, so everything ran smoothly. I can't wait to head back there with some friends in the summer when it's a bit warmer and we can enjoy riding for longer. Our final destination was a soap making factory. Well, not really a factory, but a traditional approach to making soap using natural ingredients. We spent a hour or so experimenting with different mixtures of http://daegucompass.com

colors and scents. This was a great way to unwind after being outside most of the day. We also learned that this factory used only organic material to make soap and cosmetic products. I was thrilled by this fact. All in all, this was a great experience, worth doing again. I also met some great folks along the way. That's probably the most important part, is making new connections. I won't forget this day anytime soon.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun.
