Let's Do Brunch

The Best Places in Daegu (Part 2)
A weekend brunch is my guilty pleasure. I love to indulge in a cooked breakfast and endless cups of coffee after a strenuous working week. In the November issue, I covered five excellent places to have brunch in Daegu from the ‘Best for Atmosphere’ to the ‘Best for Baked Goods’ to the ‘Best for Food’ and the ‘Best for a Day Out’. Here are five more where you can wile away a Sunday afternoon by yourself or with friends:

Let's Do Brunch
Best for the Digital Nomad - G’Day Cafe
As the name suggests, this cafe has an Australian inspired theme from the names of the dishes to the Sydney Harbour decor upstairs. I’m drawn to this cafe for its more authentic Western menu. My dish of choice is the Melbourne Brunch, served with a fried egg, sunny side up, mushrooms in a with a creamy white sauce, two slices of toasted bread and a fresh spinach salad tossed in balsamic vinegar. Also on the menu are ‘jaffles’ with fillings ranging from avocado to Nutella. The upstairs area is great for setting up your laptop and working for a few hours afterwards, especially as the owner offers you a second cup of coffee on the house. It is a little hard to find, but is worth the trek. A 10 minute walk from Beomeo Station Exit #1. Address: 980-9 Suseongdong 4(sa)-ga, Suseong-gu http://www.daegucompass.com
Best place to Take a Date - Tumtree Project
Located near the romantic Suseong Lake in southeast Daegu, Tumtree is an uber chic establishment that would be great for impressing a date. The brunch menu is very limited, but refreshingly different than most cafes in Daegu. No odd shaped hot dogs on the menu here! I choose the avocado toast with poached egg, which was mouthwateringly delicious. Also on the menu was a cream cheese sandwich on rye bread topped with honey and nuts. For coffee snobs, there are two options of single origin beans to choose from. Address: 138, Yonghak-ro, Suseong-gu

Best if you are Hungover - Lazy Dinner
If you are missing your greasy American diner, then head here. It’s not an elegant affair, but if you need to soak up the effects from the night before this is a great choice. My breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, bagel with cream cheese, bacon and hash brown. As an added bonus, the interior is full of American memorabilia to make you feel right at home. Located in the downtown area.

Let's Do Brunch
Best for Early Risers and Special Occasions Novotel Sunday Brunch
Weekend brunch is from 7.00 to 10.30 and costs a hefty 30,800W, but it is one of the few places you can indulge in brunch in Daegu before 11am! I’ll confess, I’ve never managed to get my lazy backside up early enough to check this place out, but I will. One day. Even though it is an all you can eat buffet, maybe it is best saved for a special occasion - like if you are stuck in Daegu on Christmas Day. At the Novotel Downtown.

Best if you are Homesick - Hami Mami's
After trying dozens of brunch places in Daegu, I started to feel like most offered a boring variation on a set theme of scrambled eggs, hot dog like sausage and toast with the dreaded Korean side salad. So I was excited beyond belief to venture out to Hami Mami's to try what I consider traditional American brunch fare biscuits and gravy. The combo dish was served with a side of eggs (cooked your way), and a choice of bacon or sausage. It didn’t taste quite like home, but where else in Daegu can you tuck into biscuits and gravy. Also on the menu is a breakfast burrito, stuffed French toast, an American omelette, and the HamiMami’s Breakfast served with homemade has browns and sausage. Located by exit #4 of Camp Walker. Take the 349 bus from Banwaldong Subway and get off at Palace Hotel. Head straight towards the major intersection and then veer right. 87 If you need more food inspiration whilst in Daegu, then like my Facebook Page or head to my blog: memoriesnotmaterialthings.com

Daegu Hanok Cafes and Restaurants La Mia Emily
• Written and photographed by Alex A-Che Translated by Yujeong Lee
Hanoks have become an obsession of mine over the past few years I have lived in this country. A movement to restore hanoks within Daegu has sparked new innovation for transforming these classic beauties and reimagining them as cafes and restaurants. Over the next few issues, I hope to show you the hidden hanoks that Daegu city has to offer. For our first stop in our Hanok Series, we stay close to downtown and visit La Mia Emily near Hyundai Department Store. Walking down the alley to its entrance, it is a surprise to see the space open up as you step over the threshold. I fell in love with this charming hanok for its magical green space that feels like a hidden gem in the middle of a chaotic urban downtown. The hanok, an L-shaped building, has a beautiful lawn and seating area in front. Trees and other traditional Korean garden decor add to the enchantment.

Daegu Hanok Cafes and Restaurants
http://www.daegucompass.com
Just 2 years old, the cafe has been slowly expanding and is expected to have a new addition to the building this February. The interior is simply lovely, with a shop-withinshop that sells decorative knickknacks and other items. Etta James croons over the speakers, and the mellow, gentle music doesn’t stop playing. It is sensual and 1920’s romantic. They occasionally hold jazz concerts in their lawn, so be on the lookout for these special nights. The menu has quite a few highlights. A full brunch meal that includes bacon, french toast and eggs is a popular dish among expats. If you want a light lunch, than the paninis are a good option. The summer milk bingsu is light and sweet, not overbearing in flavors and highly recommended. The cafe has two Mariage Frères French teas that are simply divine, ask for the Marco Polo or the Wedding Imperial. The floral smell of earl grey will tantalize

tea addicts. If coffee or tea is not what you crave, they do have a nice selection of beers. A highlight is the Tempt flavored ciders like Elderflower and Raspberry & Lime. The desserts are made by hand, and the citron cheesecake of a perfect fusion of the Korean palette and the Westernized appeal of cheesecake. The blueberry cake has a lovely cracker crust that gives it texture, and even for late fall the fruit on the cakes taste fresh and well thought out. -continued on p14-

I have gone regularly to La Mia Emily, and have always found their service to be warm and kind. Some staff members speak English, which comes in handy when going through the menu. The owner, Byeongho Woo, sat down with me and revealed that this very hanok use to belong to his grandfather. It all made sense, the details and the excellent service. This place had familial history and it comes through in everything they do. The cafe itself is named after his young daughter, Emily. He made a point to say that the cafe caters to everyone, including mothers and children who may sometimes find it difficult to find a cafe that caters to them.

Daegu Hanok Cafes and Restaurants
If you find yourself downtown and in need of a quiet breather from the city, head over to La Mia Emily. The easiest way is to head west, past Hyundai Department store. It is located on the next block, before you cross the street towards Miso Tower Apartments. You will see a small white circular sign hanging over an alleyway, and you will notice the piñata-esque donkey logo, a toy remnant of Emily’s childhood. The alleyway will lead you to this special resting place. Have a warm drink, try a delicious homemade dessert and lean back and listen to the wonderful tunes that drown out the city noise. As they have put it it, La Mia Emily is an oasis in the city, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Benefits and International High Standards The Quality that Daegu Medical Tourism Reaches for
• Written by Alex Hernandez Photos by EXCO Translated by Yujeong Lee
Medical Tourism has been booming in Daegu, as Daegu continues to push further in quality-control and higher goals for its medical tourism hospitals. With a commitment to meet international standards and to acquire more Leading Medical Institute locations here in the city, visitors can rest assured that their medical visit to Daegu will be filled with top-quality services from the airport all the way to the doctor’s office. The Core Power of Daegu Medical Tourism: Leading Medical Institutes Currently, there are 45 Leading Medical Institutes in Daegu. They are categorized as University Hospitals, Hospitals, Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics, Dentistry, Oriental Medicine, Ophthalmology and General Health Check-ups. And they are the core power of Daegu Medical Tourism. Daegu Medical Tourism promotes Daegu’s excellent local medical services to foreign countries and strengthens the foundation of Daegu’s medical tour through their promotion of Daegu as a hub for Leading Medical

Institutes. To be a “Leading Medical Institute”, an institute should be a Medical Institute for Foreign Patients registered through the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Through the application a judge committee, which consists of medical tourism experts, reviews the institute to consider if they have the potential to be a leading institute. Being a Leading Medical Institute has several benefits; they are able to use the title for three years, get support to establish an overseas branch, have priority to participate in domestic and overseas medical tourism promotion presentations and exhibitions, and acquire pick-up services and translating/interpreting services for foreign patients. Daegu’s Trustful Medical Tourism: JCI Accreditation Daegu has pushed for local medical institutes to acquire the JCI Accreditation, and several Leading Medical Institutes here in the city have succeeded in getting it. JCI is an international evaluation organization. Their purpose is to evaluate medical institutes and accredit American medical institutes with specific standards. It was

founded in 1994 by the Joint Commission, an evaluation organization that accredits more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Each hospital and health care organization that applies for JCI accreditation, takes about two years to prepare. During this time, the entire organization works together to develop and implement new high-quality and patient-safe policies, practices, and procedures that are required to meet JCI’s standards. During on-site evaluation, a team of expert JCI physicians, nurses, and healthcare administrators visit the organization and evaluate more than a thousand measurable elements. Through interviews with staff, patients, and leadership, along with physical inspections and reviews of records, the survey touches every part of the organization and provides a complete evaluation of the effectiveness of the organization's patient-safety and quality system. Therefore, a patient can have confidence that the facility has met strict international standards in patient-safety, delivery of clinical care, overall patient support, and more. A JCI accreditation is a good way for a patient to trust a medical institute. Daegu’s Helpful Medical Tourism: A Beneficial Program for MICE Visitors EXCO, the Daegu Exhibition and Convention Center, has held countless international conventions and opened a promotion booth for Daegu Medical Tourism. Foreign visitors can not only look around exhibitions but also drop by at the booth to get a simple health check-up. It is available for any foreign visitors so please drop by our promotion booth if you see it.

Special promotions through our MICE program have had a positive impact on international visitors to Daegu. MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions/Events) visitors are those who sign up for treatment through a Daegu Medical Tourism promotional event. MICE visitors have further benefits in using a Leading Medical Institute. They receive a special discountfor signing up at one of our booths. Just recently, an international visitor, MortezSerao from Iran, stopped by our Daegu Medical Tourism promotional booth at an international IT event at EXCO. He asked for help in getting dental treatment here. Having been considered a MICE visitor, the patient took advantage of the benefits and receiveddiscount. With the discount, the patient also received pick-up service and translation services, as well as a souvenir gift. He said, “At first, I was nervous that I was going to get medical treatment in another country. However, the promotion booth was very helpful in finding a good dental clinic. Furthermore, they provided interpreting services, transportation and

even economic benefits after my treatment schedule was arranged. I trustedDaegu Medical Tourism and the treatment was very satisfying as well. I would love to visit Korea again to have all these fantastic experiences again.” Daegu Medical Tourism is working hard to give its foreign patients an experience they can walk away from and confidently share with friends and family. The quality of medical services does not just begin at the doctor’s office. The quality begins with giving foreigner patients an experience that will make them feel welcomed and relaxed as soon as they enter the country. This is an important aspect, especially when dealing with delicate health decisions and procedures, as well as the added stress of getting treatment in another country. Through the Leading Medical Institutes, we hope to further ease the patient's’ experiences as they know they are being well taken care of in high-quality facilities that will offer them the best possible care.

I briefly talked about Cultural Intelligence, Communication Skills, Public Speaking, Grit, and Attention to Detail. This month’s article will focus on Technical Acumen, Time Management, Humility, and adaptability. Let’s jump right in… Considering a Career Change?
When I moved to China in 2002, there were no books, no grading system, nor any curricula so everything had to be designed by some of the other teachers and me. This led to early adoption of knowing how software programs worked in different languages. I want you to imagine using a Chinese or Korean-specific word processor with no English menus that only work inside their languagespecific Operating Systems. This is where the learning curve for editing and creating documents becomes steep. Only through trial and error and some guesswork are you able to navigate and complete your work on time.

Time Management
Due to the variety of teaching and business areas we work in, we have to continually find ways to provide meaningful content to clients and students using up to date and effective mediums. This should inspire us to test and become skilled at using new technology. Ten years ago I began using the more basic elements of multimedia into lesson plans a la PowerPoint. Fast-forward ten years and numerous software and web-based tools later, I began teaching a blended course using a learning management system (LMS) to help students find learning opportunities outside class. It was also helpful in providing formative feedback to learners. Using an LMS, authoring tools, MOOCs, Flipped Classrooms, and Blended Learning all require some technical proficiency. If these terms are foreign to you, you are probably not prepared for the revolution happening in education right now.
DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2016
Many EFL teachers in South Korea start out at the hagwon level and either transition into EPIK, university jobs or become freelancers. For those of us with experience in freelancing, one day can be vastly different from the next. I spent three years in a city called Changwon, working freelance while finishing an online masters at a British university (no they won’t get any free press here). One of my workdays would start at 5:50 teaching Business English to engineers at a factory, then off to a different city at an elementary school for three or four hours and ending with a corporate training class for execs after their day ended at 7 or 8PM in yet another city. This meant having two changes of clothes, four to six different lesson plans, and skills at keeping times straight. This was but one day out of five with wildly varying schedules, where keeping the days straight, making appointments and holding meetings was especially challenging.

Humility
Adaptability 융통성
This is one of those words that everyone pretends to know. Most people imagine themselves being humble but don’t actually know how to personify humility. We all have our distractions, but setting down our iPhones to have a chat with a colleague or a student is an act of humility. It’s showing the other person that “yes, your time is valuable to me” and “I value you enough to give you my full attention”. Those with humility can look outside their own experiences. As expat teachers, you came here to learn and to discover how other cultures might strengthen you. You are open to seeing the world and valuing what other cultures have to offer. You’ve stepped outside of your comfort zone and are now able to empathize with people from vastly different backgrounds and languages. You can put yourselves in the shoes of your learners because you are learners yourselves. This brings us to our last skill.

Considering a Career Change?
You left your home country, you moved to another one halfway around the world with a new language, culture, sets of rules and faux pas. Yet you thrived and saw every challenge as a learning opportunity. Try telling your colleagues or friends who have not lived abroad what it’s like haggling in a fish market with a woman hunched over due to a life of farming. I usually get blank stares from friends who are quick to move on to a different topic of conversation.
http://www.daegucompass.com
You’ve seen, done and eaten things most people wouldn’t dream of and yet you shrug it off as life in Korea (or insert other country here). Life overseas is different and often inexplicable to the uninitiated. I cannot reiterate enough just how challenging moving across the world is. That alone should show recruiters and hiring managers that you are not afraid of change and that you can handle just about any curveball thrown at you.

Who Says You Can’t Rock in Daegu?
A pretty consistent question floating about town is: “Where can I catch some live music around here?” Well, I’m here to help scratch that itch, but there’s a lot of information about to come at you, and I have max word count, so let’s get down to brass tacks.
Downtown :
Most of the venues are downtown. For the sake of consistency, directions will all be from GoGo’s.

A Guide to Live Music • Written by Kyle Decker Photos by Jeffe Graham, John Yingling, Elkim Yoon Translated by Yujeong Lee
Urban : Urban is one of the more well known places to catch live music, and the easiest to find. It’s right on the main foreigner bar street downtown between OK Norebang and Thursday Party 2. Urban has hosted a wide variety of genres including: metal, indie, punk, and hiphop. Directions : Head South from GoGo’s. Turn right down the main bar street. It’s just past the first street on the left.
Communes: Communes is the second oldest small live music venue in Daegu. And the oldest standing in its original location, as far as I know. It’s proximity to the Samdak fire station makes it easy to find. Less of a venue, and more of a dive bar with a drum kit in the corner, the bands perform standing in the middle of the crowd, giving it a fun punk-rock intimacy. Directions: Head South from GoGo’s. Turn left down the second street (1st street that lets you turn left) towards the street with the cabs. On the left, under the Kuro Batman bar that blares techno. -continued on p26-

Jeng-iy: AKA: The Jimi Hendirx Bar, Jeng-iy is Daegu’s oldest small live music venue. Sort of. The old location was near Bangwoldang exit 14, but closed in the summer of 2015. It moved shortly after to more central location. The new place is actually two venues in one. Upstairs is a bar, with a small stage, and a chill atmosphere. Two floors down, in the basement, is Jeng-iy Jiha, and is a performance space with a small bar that serves draft beer. It’s hosted bands from all over Korea and even the U.S., Australia, Japan, and France. Punk, metal, and noise rock rule here. If you’re looking for more hard rock, it’s a good spot to keep tabs on. Although, they show everything. Directions: Head North from GoGo’s. Pass the first street. It’s on your left just before the main road. The entrance to Jiha is in the alley just past the building. There’s also a stairwell door in the upstairs bar.

Retro City: Retro City hosts the Once a Month Punk shows every fourth Saturday. And hosts a variety of live music the other weekends. It’s got a very unique layout, that clearly used to be a restaurant of some kind. There’s plenty of space to dance and mosh, but also cozy little nooks if you prefer to experience live music in private. It’s about a 10-12 minute walk from the main bar street. Directions: Head North from GoGo’s. Take a left at the first street. Walk to the stage, and take a right. Cross the main road by H&M and continue North on the brick pedestrian walkway. Cross the street with cars. Keep heading north and take the next left. It will be on your right.

Old Blue: Jazz more your thing? Old Blue might be more up your alley. It’s right across the street from Samdak fire station. It can get a little pricey and the 10,000won cover just gets put on your bill, but it’s a nice, chill spot for a classier date if it’s pay day. Directions: Head South from GoGo’s. Turn left down the second street (1st street that lets you turn left) towards the street with the cabs.Cross the street, take a left. It’s on the right on the main road, directly across from the fire station.
DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2016
Buk-Gu : 북구
Sugar Joe’s: If you live in the Kyung-Dae area, you probably know this place. It’s the bar with good cheap hamburgers that caters to foreigners and uni-students. They host the occasional live music show. Directions: Take a cab or bus to Kyungpook National University North Gate (Kyung-Dae Buk-moon, if you’re cabbing it). Cross the street from the main university gate and take a left. Keep walking along the main road for about 100 yards or so. It’s upstairs. -continued on p28-

Nam-gu : 남구
Club Heavy: Not well known among foreigners, but a central point for indie music in Daegu for 20 years, it’s also likely the most well known outside of Daegu and hosts shows by artists from around the world and key players in South Korea’s indie scene. This place exists solely to host live music, but there is a beer cooler where you can get some bottles for 4,000 won. It’s near Keimyung University Daemyeong Campus. Directions: Take the yellow line to Namsan Station. Head out exit 2 and cross the street towards the GS25. This has you facing south. Keep heading south. Pass the Lotteria. It will be on your left right next to a bus stop.

Who Says You Can’t Rock in Daegu?
Led Zeppelin: Another small, intimate rock venue. Primarily local Korean bands play here, and due to its proximity to Keimyung University Daemyeong Campus, is geared towards college students. Directions: Take the yellow line to Namsan Station. Head out exit 2 and cross the street towards the GS25. Turn right and cross the street again. Take a left at the next light. It’s upstairs on the right. For more information join the Daegu Concerts group on Facebook to keep up with music related events, or follow the venues themselves. Or if you’re feeling saucy, just show up to one of these places at random on a Friday or Saturday and take in whatever the night has to offer.

Christmas in Korea The Boseong Green Tea Plantation Light Festival
• Written by Duke Stewart - DukeStewartWrites.com Photos by Christina Hedinger - DukeStewartWrites.com Translated by Yujeong Lee
As we drive towards the Boseong Green Tea Plantation on this Christmas Eve, my wife and I battle those homesick emotions that come during this time of year. This is probably the worst for us thanks to a couple of Skype calls home and the tears that came during and after them. You can only tell them I miss you and assure them that you’ll be home again so many times. To revive those holiday spirits, we’re going to turn Christmas around with a night at the Boseong Green Tea Plantation Light Festival. The only expectations we have are bright things to stare at and a slight hope that something resembles a Christmas tree there.
Anticlimax, Crowds and Lights
Korean Light festivals have long been one of my favorite ways to forget homesickness and that’s what tonight’s all about. After driving up through Suncheon before veering west, we pull into the tollbooth that starts the interstate and pass through the ticket feeder. The lack of cars around really makes the whole night feel anticlimactic even though I’m jittery at the thought of seeing lights. Nobody else seems to care and it’s safe to ask, who can blame them? My own excitement levels never really jump up during Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) or Seollal (Lunar New Year) but I know it’s a pretty big deal here.

A Small Hint of Lights
How many times have I explained that our Thanksgiving happens on a Thursday and is best spent eating, drinking, and watching American football? Whatever. My mind has drifted long enough and we’re almost at the exit leading to Boseong’s Daehan Dawon Green Tea Plantation that’s been pretty popular on our Quick Weekend Daytrips list. It’s time to see the place at night when it’s all lit up and finally, we find traffic and a lot of cars parked pretty far away. Not only is it crowded and surprisingly so, I can see a small hint of lights in the far background. Maybe there’s a tree somewhere in there.

If the cars were any sign of what’s to come, I should’ve known that parking wouldn’t be easy. I mean it is and it isn’t in the sense that I don’t want to put the ’99 Sonata in a spot that’s likely to make it vulnerable to getting blocked in. Failed parking is all the rage here and pretty funny to watch when it’s live and in action. Amazingly enough, we find a place in a makeshift lot that seems to have been dug out of the ground as recently as last Tuesday. The lights appear in the background and in a more convenient spot away the main green tea plantation area. It’s an easier access point with stairways that lead down pretty much right off the road. First we walk past lines of street food vendors and stare at the massive sticks of hot potato rings that have been fighting against the cold, windy night. One of my favorite scenes in this country is the bundled up ladies and gents (ajummas and ajosshis to the expats) standing inside tiny spaces and serving up steaming food that’s either right on the mark or needs

a few more minutes. I can never resist but will this time because we arrive at the entrance. Down we go into the lighted green tea field.
Green Tea Lights
When my parents were still together, I remember getting excited for rides through our southern West Virginia park that lit up every year for the holidays. My memories switch to wondering if I’d ever imagine spending a Christmas at a Korean green tea field in search of holiday cheer. Though we haven’t found a tree yet, the lights against the normally bright green bushes look pretty cool. Christina and I walk through various tunnels and pathways and shoot our obligatory selfies that pale in comparison to the hundreds of sticks and poses going on in our midst.

Colorful Trees, Cool Statues, and Dinosaurs
Throughout the field, there are interesting approaches to the light displays. I guess in a country where bright neon colors most of the cityscapes, they should be doing this right. Along the way we run and find colorful trees, cool statues, and even dinosaurs shining through the night. This moment is perfect and erases any anguish that we felt earlier in the day. People chat all around us and it’s really starting to feel festive down in this green tea valley. Christina walks around and tries to capture the night without getting too distracted by the atmosphere.
Driving to Yulpo Beach
After at least an hour walking around, we decide to see if there are any similar happenings at Boseong’s Yulpo Beach. It’s not the most spectacular patch of sand but over the course of a few visits, Yulpo is one of my favorites that hug the southwest coast. Getting there tests my patience like any drive through gridlock that barely inches forward every couple of minutes. Eventually things loosen up and we reach the beach just in time to walk past more street food vendors along the way.
Yulpo Beach Lights

their way. More people are back at the green tea fields but the scenes here are still pretty fun to walk through. At the end of our walk and in front of a beachfront hotel, we find the most special tree of them all. Resembling a Japanese maple but with pine needles, lights surround it and set it apart from everything else.
A Wonderfully Festive Occasion
We don’t spend much time at the tree but can safely say that it rounded out a wonderfully festive occasion here in coastal Jeollanam-do. The drive back to Yeosu is mostly quiet and spent recovering from those awesome holiday scenes. It’s safe to say that this night was exactly what we needed to forget about the homesickness that comes and goes when living abroad. My only advice for those interested in listening is to follow what you know only when you absolutely need it. I’ve followed the “when in Rome” approach so many times but when it comes to the things I love, nights like this one at Boseong’s Green Tea Plantation Light Festival are the best way to get by in Korea.

Whether you’ve lived in Korea for five years or you’re visiting for five days, shopping for souvenirs in Daegu can be a challenge. Unlike Seoul, where entire streets like Insadong are lined with shops selling traditional handicrafts, Daegu’s souvenir shops are far less conspicuous. If you’re heading home soon or looking for a little piece of Korea to send home in a care package, spare yourself from picking up an overpriced refrigerator magnet or key chain from the airport. Here are 10 traditional and unique gifts to remember your time in Korea.
1. Food 1. 음식
Some of the most memorable souvenirs can be found on the shelves of your local grocery store. Two of my favorite picks are gim and honey ginger tea. Gim is thin sheets

of toasted seaweed brushed with sesame oil. It makes a tasty and healthy snack on its own or wrapped around rice. Koreans traditionally gift gim, olive oil, Spam and fresh fruits on Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) and Seolnal (Lunar New Year). A jar of honey ginger tea also makes a lovely gift. It’s easy to make (simply stir a spoonful into a mug of hot water). It’s also a popular remedy for warding off colds. For the more adventurous eaters in your life, pick up a can of beondegi (silkworm pupae) or dried squid. Where to shop: Gim, honey ginger tea, beondegi and dried squid can all be found at your local convenience store. Looking for something a little fancier? Check out E-mart, Homeplus or Hyundai Department Store (B1).

2. Cosmetics
4. Korean kitchenware
Korean beauty products are among the most demanded items by international tourists, and the biggest beauty brands are all available in Daegu including Innisfree, The Face Shop and Skin Food. High quality, often local, ingredients include green tea, Jeju Island volcanic clay, honey and ginseng. Innisfree actually has a great line for men. I got my Dad some of their green tea moisturizer for Christmas last year, and he loved it. Where to shop: Cosmetic shops are everywhere! The biggest concentration can be found downtown between H&M and the stage.
Souvenirs should tell a story, so why not pick something that Koreans use in their everyday lives? Korean chopsticks are uniquely flat and rectangular and made of metal. Traditionally, they were made of brass or silver. Another kitchenware pick is somaek (soju + beer) glasses. Found at any respectable Korean barbecue establishment, these glasses have lines for measuring just the right amount of soju and beer. Where to shop: Daiso
2. 화장품
3. Paper fans 3.
These beautiful paper fans not only keep you cool in the summer; they can also brighten up the walls of your home. Where to shop: Paper fans range from cheap reproductions to expensive works of art. You can find them at Hot Tracks, Art Box and Dada Stationery Store.

5. Alcohol 5. 술
When I visited the States earlier this year, I brought home 10 bottles of soju and one bottle of Korean plum wine. They made awesome gifts for my family and friends. And at about $1 a bottle, they don’t break the bank. The only downside is that they’re super heavy, and you must pack them carefully. Where to shop: Convenience stores, E-mart, Homeplus, etc. Soju starts at about 1,000 KRW a bottle. Korean plum wine comes in pretty bottles and starts around 3,500 KRW. -continued on p38-

6. Fun socks 6.

8. Brass doorbell chimes 8.
Printed with funny sayings and famous characters, these socks are definitely a conversation starter and, at only $1 a pair, they make an affordable souvenir. Where to shop: Various stalls downtown, Banwoldang Underground Mall, Jungangno Underground Mall, Daiso
You can spot brass doorbell chimes like these at the entrance of homes and businesses in Korea. They are supposed to keep bad luck out. Where to shop: Dada Stationery Store and Seomun Market

7. Andong masks
Catching a weekend performance of the Hahoe Folk Village mask play in Andong is a must-do while in Korea. These spirited masks can be found throughout Korea.

9. Tea
I recently sampled the most delicious cherry blossom tea at Hyundai Department Store (B1). Grown on Jeju Island, the brand is called Osulloc. The packaging is so pretty, and at 15 bucks a pop, I know what all the tea drinkers in my life are getting for Christmas this year!

Compass Classics Meat Done Right : Braised Pork
• Written and photographed by Ryan Eldredge http://dumbindaegu.blogspot.kr Translated by Kate Ko
If you're looking for something other than galbi for your meat craving, you might want to try something that's readily (and cheaply!) available in Korea at every corner butcher shop, braised pork shoulder! If you've never braised something before, it's super easy and the recipe is extremely forgiving, so feel free to make substitutions or leave things out if you don't have them (except the meat). I love this whole technique because you can use it to make about a hundred other dishes (KimchiJiggae perhaps?). Just change up your meat and/or braising liquids. All you need is a single large pot and a single burner. For this dish I used things that remind me of Korea and Daegu, namely beer, soju and apples. Here's what I used.

Compass Classics
http://www.daegucompass.com
● A pork shoulder (you can just use one, but I was
cooking for eight people, so I used one and a half)"Moksal" in Korean ● One bottle of soju ● Good apple juice (not too sweet, go for 100% not from concentrate if possible) ● Beer (I used Hite, but use whatever) ● Onions ● Apples ● Garlic ● 돼지목살 (한 덩어리만 사용해도 되지만 나는 8인분을 만들 것이라 한 덩어리 반만큼 사용했다.) If you have a mind to, you can start by searing your meat in the pot you plan on using (go big). If you don't want to, you don't have to because you're going to be cooking this hunk of tenderness for four hours and it's going to be loaded with plenty of flavor at that point. I go ahead and give an onion a rough chop and wash and prepare about a handful of garlic cloves. When you think your pork has a sufficient sear (mine doesn't really), go ahead and just pour the whole bottle of soju into the pot. Yes, the whole bottle, don't be scared. You can see how little a bottle of soju is in my stock pot. Go ahead and dump in your onions and garlic as well. -continued on p42-

After that, you want to add an equal amount of apple juice and beer. I just used a coffee cup, measuring really isn't important, you just keep adding an equal amount until about 1/2 to 3/4 of the pork is covered. Go ahead and add whatever seasonings you want. I used a couple of bay leaves and some pepper. You don't really want to add salt at this point because the liquid is going to cook way down and you might end up over salting at this point. Next bring the whole mess to a very low simmer for about 3-4 hours depending on the size of the shoulder. Don't worry; it's really hard to overcook this. So how do you know when it's done? Here is mine about 4 hours later. The whole house smelled amazing at this point and the meat was so tender that I could push a chopstick

right through the center with absolutely no resistance. At this point, you could remove the meat, skim off the fat and reduce and salt the remaining braising liquid to make a sauce. If you're like me though, you can make this whole thing a day ahead and just reheat it the next day when your guests arrive. Here's how you do that. Wow, one day later you can see how much fat has collected at the top. Once the fat is removed, go ahead and skin and cut up an apple and cut another onion or two into large rings. Add them to the pot and bring the whole thing to a boil. The next step is to remove the meat and large pieces of apple and onion to a serving dish. Reduce and salt the remaining liquid to your taste and then add some of the liquid (glaze) to the serving tray.

Cut the meat into serviceable pieces (it will just fall apart) and dig in. Trust me, the meat will be so, so tender, it's impossible not to like. Feeling Homesick? Try This Homemade Tomato Soup Recipe
• Written and photographed by Bridgett Hernandez https://thenakedforeigner.com
Cheese toasties and tomato soup are the ultimate comfort food on chilly, drizzly days: gooey melted cheese between two slices of toasted bread dipped in a bowl of bright, tangy tomato soup. It’s a delicious cure for the winter blues. But alas! The iconic Campbell’s Tomato Soup (or any other brand for that matter) is hard to find in Daegu. I was so homesick for tomato soup, I decided to do a little poking around on the web to figure out how to make it myself. The results? Success! I will never go back to buying canned tomato soup again; it tastes like ketchup compared to this flavorful and creamy homemade recipe! This recipe was inspired by Jamie Oliver’s Tomato Soup Recipe and Classic Tomato Soup Recipe on Chowhound. It’s a simple recipe, but it takes a bit of time. I promise it’s worth the wait!

Feeling Homesick?
Homemade Tomato Soup Tools
Knife and cutting board for dicing up veggies Medium-sized pot Wooden spoon Handheld or conventional blender to puree ingredients
Ingredients
1 tablespoon butter or olive oil 1 carrot, diced 2 stalks of celery, diced 1 onion, diced 6 cloves of garlic, minced 1 can (400g) whole tomatoes
http://www.daegucompass.com
1 medium-sized tomato, cored and chunked 1.5 cups chicken stock or water (I’ve found Korean onion juice 양파즙 to be a flavorful vegetarian alternative. I mix a cup of water with a half cup of onion juice.) 1/2 cup heavy cream or whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Optional extras
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper Fresh basil or pesto Parmesan cheese
DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2016
Directions
1. In pot, sauté carrot, celery and onion in butter over low heat for 15 min. Stir occasionally so the vegetables don’t stick to the bottom of the pot. 2. Add the garlic (and crushed red pepper, if you desire) and continue stirring for 5 min. 3. Increase heat to medium and add both kinds of tomatoes. Use your wooden spoon to break up tomatoes as you stir for 10 min. 4. Add broth and decrease heat to low when it begins to simmer. Simmer for 15 min. 5. Remove pot from heat to cool for 10 min. In the meantime, get started on those cheese toasties! 6. Use a handheld blender to puree the mixture. It’s a little more work, but you can also use a conventional blender to puree it in smaller batches. 7. Once it’s smooth, blend in the salt, pepper and cream and enjoy!

The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Come on down to HamiMami's and experience a bit of home. Open & Close: 08:00-21:00 / Break time for weekdays: 15:00-17:00 / Closed on Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Add: 87, Samjeong-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

Gajok
Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Daehan News / Two Ppul
Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road
Kyungpook Uni. Area
Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

Bongsan Cultural Street
77, Bongsanmunhwa-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea
Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.
