A TASTE OF THE OLD COUNTRY

f you are looking for a taste of authentic Italian food in Daegu, look no further than Little Italya. Owned and operated for the last ten years by Chef Goo Ja Tae, this small, bistro-style eatery is located right in the heart of Downtown and provides a terrific assortment of delicious pasta and pizza dishes at great prices. The dining area is small but very comfortable. The dĂŠcor goes perfectly with the sparse, tasteful aesthetic of the layout. A towering wine rack greets you when you first walk in. The entire main wall is a row of arch shaped shelves with small paintings and trinkets inside. It is well lit and all the tables and chairs are made of

blondish wood, giving the space a bright, clean ambiance. Behind the counter, you can see directly into the bustling kitchen. Two four-top tables are located up front. To the right, along the wall is a line of four tables-for-two. Behind two hanging shelves which act as a partition and up a few steps are two more small tables; a nice, intimate spot to sit with a date. The bulk of the menu is comprised of pasta dishes. They are conveniently separated by the base of the sauce; there are sections for tomato, olive oil and cream. There are also four different risotto dishes available. If you are in the mood for pizza, then you can design your own by selecting

from a nice variety of toppings, or choose one of four classic pies. Naturally, all pizza is made to order so anything you get is fresh as can be. If you just want something light, there are four salads to choose from, including the Italian standard, caprese (mozzarella, sliced tomato and basil with olive oil and balsamic vinegar). Our table started off with the mushroom and bacon salad. These two main ingredients came piled on top of a bed of fresh mixed greens, red onions and cherry tomatoes dressed with an excellent vinaigrette. Next, we were treated to three different pasta dishes. First, we tried the ravioli with ragu sauce. The ravioli was filled

LITTLE ITALYA RESTAURANT REVIEW two pasta dishes and two nonalcoholic drinks. Set 2 includes one pasta dish, one pizza and two non-alcoholic drinks. Both sets cost 19,800w.

with no less than six ingredients: ricotta, mozzarella and parmesan cheese in addition to ground beef, bacon and egg yolk…This symphony of flavors meshed incredibly well with the basic tomato sauce; each bite had a pleasantly smoky taste. After that, we had the shrimp Genovese. This is essentially a spaghetti and pesto dish topped with, you guessed it: shrimp. It’s as simple and tasty as it sounds. The pesto sauce is rich without being overpowering and it comes with more than enough shrimp to satisfy any seafood enthusiast. Lastly, we got what was undoubtedly the biggest hit at the table: the cream sauce risotto with chicken breast. Bring your appetite if you plan on messing with this stuff because it is HEAVY (in the best possible way). The rice was perfectly cooked; every individual grain stood out without being at all crunchy, and the creamy sauce was seasoned lightly enough so as to not distract from the yummy, simple flavor of the grilled chicken. It may stop your heart before you can finish, but what a nice way to go…

The sweet dessert, served with a good cup of coffee punctuated our meal impeccably. As mentioned above, the prices at Little Italya are more than fair. Almost every pasta dish costs less than 10,000w. The pizzas, which can serve two people cost between 13,000w and 16,000w. The salads, also ideal for splitting, are 6,50010,000w. The mostly Italian wine list features four different reds and three whites. They cost 5,0007,000w by the glass and around 30,000w per bottle. Ask your waiter or waitress to recommend a wine to complement your meal as they all seem quite knowledgeable. A bottle of Moretti or Menabrea beer (both seriously good Italian brews) costs 6,500w. There are two set options as well. Set 1 includes a mixed green salad,

In addition to his everyday menu, Chef Goo also frequently provides a special menu, reserved for some more authentic dishes he learned while studying cuisine in Italy. He explains that both Korean and American palettes are conditioned to favor much stronger tastes and so they often don’t appreciate lighter, simpler recipes. It is on this menu that the ravioli ragu was featured, and while the filling of the ravioli was far from light, the bare-basic (yet delicious) tomato sauce was a perfect example of Mr. Goo’s sensibility. Little Italya is, well…little, so even a seasoned Downtown veteran may walk past it without noticing. The simplest directions would be to head west (towards the shopping district and stage) from the main strip of foreigner bars. It will be on your right, just a few steps before you run into the perpendicular street. Choose your preferred mode of transportation to get Downtown and check out this hidden gem soon!

Once on Dumaguete, there are plenty of dive shops and resorts to choose from. There is only one that really stands out though. Liquid Dive Resort (www.liquiddumaguete.com) has the best prices for the area and the traditional beach bungalows pictured on postcards. The resort is about 20 minutes from Dumaguete city and they arrange airport shuttle service for 600 pesos. For 1200

pesos, you get a beachfront view, nice bathroom with warm water from the natural, hot water spring and a comfy bed with a fan. If you are looking for AC, you’ll have to look elsewhere, but the ocean breeze combined with the fan at night is more than enough to keep you cool. There are only 8 bungalows at the moment and smaller rooms for Dive Master Trainees. All about diving. Liquid is the filet mignon of diving resorts. A salt water pool to help with confined water skills and access to some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the Pacific. Their dive shed is full of gear to rent and use. Along with three great divemasters, Jim, Alfred and the Frenchman Gui, Liquid can accommodate all levels of diving. They offer all Padi certi-

fied courses: Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Specialty courses, Rescue, Divemaster and Instructor courses. Apo Island offers a great experience to see sea snakes, turltes, lionfish and a whole host of other underwater life forms. Similan dive site has great coral reef cliffs that drop down to about 30m. In January, whale sharks migrated very close to there as well, as shallow as 6m. These gentle giants have really boosted the local interest as well. Dauin beach area, where Liquid is located, has some nice drift diving sites where schools of barracuda swim. Liquid is just getting started as well, but by keeping classes small, students get a great opportunity for some one-on-one instruction.

Dinner is served. Meals at Liquid are unique and change every day. Unlike a traditional resort, Liquid has a very family oriented approach to dining. Meals are served during set times only, while

they do have snacks for purchase if you get the munchies. Breakfast is from 7:30-9:30am with free coffee and tea. Lunch is served from 11:30am-1:30pm or so with 3 options, which usually consist of a sandwich served on homemade sour dough bread, soup dish or a local rice dish. They like to start the night off early with Happy Hour running from 5-7pm and San Miguel Pilsen is only 30 pesos (about 1,000w) a bottle. Dinner is a special treat. Ricky, Liquid’s dinner chef, is superb! A three-course meal comprised of a starter, main course and dessert. The best meal was the tuna steak or maybe the grilled pork tenderloin. ranquility juxtaposed to inquisition—these two adjectives were projected to the front of my mind as I entered the facilities at the Daegu Art Museum. While DAM (the acronym used for the museum’s epigraph) is only seven months old, one senses that juxtaposition, or maybe blurred amalgamations, is a long term vision (maybe premonition?) of DAM’s facilitators.

photography, paintings, carpentry, moldings, and even a neon-light exhibit—are structured with perceptive precision. On several walls you find an ancient work of art bookended by two contemporary pieces; such composition suggests that the artistry of DAM mirrors the psychological and cultural elements of Korea at large.

The rooms are capacious, giving your mind the necessary space to wander far beyond the (what seems like) 7 meter-high ceilings. The works of art—which include

Amplifying the reflection of Korea—its rich history coupled with its rapid modernization—is portrayed in the artists currently housed at DAM. The current theme at DAM is Nature, Life, Human, and DAM has acquired the works of artists such as Lee Kang So, Kim Sooja, Lee Qoede and François Morellet. To briefly unfold such a kaleidoscopic grouping, consider the following: Lee Kang So has been a central figure in Korean conceptual art since the 1970’s; Kim Sooja is

native to Daegu, and is internationally known for his work; Lee Qoede defected to North Korea after the peninsular division, yet his artwork was kept in South Korea and it was finally released to the public in 1988; and François Morellet, a French artist, has been one of the most important figures in geometrical abstraction since the 1950’s. Yet, DAM and Korea (its history and contemporary culture) are not necessarily collocates; rather, the coupling stems from a holistic experience of visiting the museum. You get lost, you discover, you find serenity, perplexity, specificity and portraits of images that transcend the framed imagery. And, when continued on p16

ver wonder what the green scene in Daegu is like? Maybe you’ve seen the awkwardly worded “Me First” signs in the buses encouraging us to unplug electronics, turn down the heat, and finish all our food. Or maybe you’ve noticed people standing around 2.28 Park holding signs and banners protesting the Four Rivers project. Perhaps you were downtown on at midnight on Earth Day last year and saw a bunch of people pitching tents in preparation for a night to be spent hanging out, singing, snacking, and enforcing car-free day? While I can’t say I know who’s behind the first two, I was honored to be a part of the third, which was organized in part by the Daegu Green Consumers Network (녹색 소비자연대). Over the past year I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend time with several employees of the DGCN, though only recently did I sit down with them to get the official word on what the group is and what they’re up to.

대구의 “Green scene”이 어 떤 것인지 궁금해 해본 적이 있 는가? 아마도 당신은 버스 안에 서 사람들에게 안 쓰는 전자제품 플러그 뽑기, 난방 온도 내리기, 그리고 음식물 남기지 않기 등을 장려하는 어색하게 표현된 “내 가 먼저”라는 표지판을 봤을 것

이다. 아니면 당신은 아마 2.28 공원 근처에서 사대강 정책에 반 대하는 표지판이나 플랜카드를 들고 서있는 사람들을 목격했을 수도 있다. 혹은 작년 지구의 날 자정에 당신이 시내에 있었다면 한 무리의 사람들이 자동차 없 는 말을 권장하기 위해 노래 부 르고, 군것질도 하며.. 밤새 어 울리면서 하룻밤을 보낼 천막을 치는 것을 봤을 수도 있다. 나는 처음 두 번의 행사가 누구에 의 해 진행되었는 지 모르지만, 대구녹색소비지 연대가 조직한 세 번째 행사에 참여할 수 있었 던 것은 나에게 는 큰 영광이었 다. 비록 최근 에야 내가 그 단 체가 무엇이고, 그들이 무슨 일 을 하는지 공식 적인 이야기를 들을 수 있었지 만, 작년 동안 대구녹색소비자 연대의 몇몇 직 원 분들과 함께 일을 할 수 있었 던 기회는 나에 게 커다란 행운 이었다.

The Green Consumers Network started in Seoul in 1996 as a consumers’ rights protection organization. Consumers who had problems with faulty products could contact the GCN, which would then advise them on what they could do, or even advocate for them in court. Over the last fifteen years, it has expanded to include branches in eighteen cities, each of which runs its own programs and projects depending on local interests and needs. Despite

GOING GREEN IN DAEGU their differences, though, all are dedicated to “green consumption” in some form or another. 녹색소비자연대는 소비자의 권리보호를 위한 조직으로써 1996년 서울에서 시작되었다. 잘못된 제품 때문에 곤란을 격은 소비자들은 녹색소비자연대에 연락을 하고, 녹색소비자연대는 소비자들이 무엇을 할 수 있는지 조언을 해주고 혹은 법정에서 이 소비자들을 변호하기도 한다. 이 연대는 지난 15년에 걸쳐, 18개 시도에 지점을 확장하였고, 각각 의 지점은 그 곳의 지역적인 관 심과 요구에 관련해서 자체 프로 그램과 프로젝트를 운영하고 있 다. 각 지점들은 그들만의 차이 점을 가지고 있긴 하지만, 어떤 형태로든 “녹색 소비”에 헌신

The Daegu branch of the GCN has three divisions: the main office in Suseong-gu, the Palgong office in Dong-gu, and the little hole in the wall near the rear gate of KNU, endearingly named “The Unawkward

Warehouse” (“어색하지 않은 창 고” in Korean, or “Chang-go” for

short.) I’m most familiar with this last one, which I’ve been visiting regularly and sharing with friends ever since I found out about it last December. Spearheaded by Jeong Mi-na, Chang-go exists to give col-

lege students and others a place to meet, organize, plan, study, or do just about anything they can think up. Student groups working for social justice can book the space for a nominal fee and use the kitchen to prepare group meals for themselves and guests; study groups or book clubs can reserve space weekly; and individuals can stop by for a cup of fair-trade coffee or organic tea sold at-cost. There are bookshelves full of books on social, political, environmental, and culinary topics, available to anyone who wants to borrow them. In addition, Chang-go also operates two regular programs: Community Lunch, where students cook lunch together using mostly organic ingredients, and the weekly Veg Night for the Earth, where members gather together to enjoy brown rice, organic vegetarian fare, and one another’s company. The staff of the Palgong branch is principally involved in creating Daegu’s own version of Jeju’s Ollegil, a hiking trail that runs around the entire perimeter of the island. The Daegu Olle-gil will eventually link together a number of alreadyexisting hiking paths around Mt. Palgong and offer starting points easily accessible by public transportation. I asked Jin Seon-a to explain the connection with green consumption; she told that consumption refers not only to what we buy, but how and where we spend our time. In winter and summer alike, we depend on fossil-fuel powered climate control to keep us comfy. Further, more of us are overweight and out of shape than ever before. Encouraging people to get out and hike, and making it easier for them to do so, can kill both of these birds with one stone. Winter hikers generate their own heat, summer hikers can cool off in the fresh air, and no matter what time of year, being out and active leads to better health. Plus, the more time one spends in nature, the more likely one is to want to protect it. As it is, Daegu’s continuing sprawl is encroaching on Mt. Palgong; the DGCN sees increased attachment to the natural, cultural, and historical treasures of the mountain as the most effective remedy.

GOING GREEN IN DAEGU 팔공 사무소의 직원들은 주로 제 주 올레길(제주도 외곽전체를 돌 아볼 수 있는 하이킹 코스)과 같 은 대구 올레길을 만드는 일을 하고 있다. 대구 올레길은 최종 적으로 팔공산 주변에 원래 있 던 여러 등산로들을 서로 연결할 계획이다. 그리고, 대중 교통으 로 쉽게 갈 수 있는 곳에 등산로 의 시작 지점들이 만들어 질 것 이다. 나는 진선아에게 녹색 소 비와 이 프로젝트의 관계를 설명 해달라고 부탁했다. 그녀는 소비 는 단지 우리가 무엇을 사느냐에 뿐만 아니라, 우리가 어디서 시 간을 보내는지도 포함하고 있다 고 말했다. 겨울과 여름 모두, 우리는 편의 를 유지하기 위해 화석연료를 화 석연료를 사용하는 실내온도조 절기에 의존한다. 게다가 우리들 은 이전보다 좀 더 과체중이 되 었고 몸의 균형도 깨졌다. 사람 들에게 밖으로 나가 하이킹을 하 도록 장려하는 것과 그리고 그러 한 활동을 좀더 쉽게 만드는 것 은 일석이조일 것이다. 겨울철 하이커들은 스스로 열을 방출하 고, 여름철 하이커들은 시원한 공기로 열을 식힐 수 있다. 그리 로 일년 중 언제건, 야외활동은 우리가 더 건강해 지도록 도와줄 것이다. 더군다나 사람들이 더 많은 시간을 자연에서 보낼수록, 자연을 더욱 보호하고 싶어질 것 이다. 이와 같이, 대구녹색소비 자연대의 지속적인 확장은 팔공 산까지 발들 들여 놓았다. 이들 은 가장 팔공산의 자연적, 문화 적, 그리고 역사적인 보물들에게 시민들의 애착을 더 키우는 효과 적인 개선책이라고 본다.

The main office, hidden in an unassuming old-style Korean house just East of the Sincheon river, orchestrates a number of programs, the biggest of which is the recurring Brown Rice Raw Vegan Diet seminar. Participants start the seminar with a healthcheck up that includes detailed measurements of weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, and other nutritional indicators. Over the course of a month and a half, they attend six weekly meetings at which they’re treated to healthy dinners and listen to lectures by Dr. Hwang Seong-su on social, nutritional, ethical, and practical aspects of raw veganism. Participants also keep food diaries and receive another check-up at the end of the program. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the final meeting, where I heard their stories: several lost as much as four kilograms and everyone reported improvements of some kind, whether measurable (blood pressure), tangible (better skin), or slightly less concrete (overall more energy).

courses for those interested in learning about organic farming before retiring to the countryside; field trips for children, adults, and families to forests and apple orchards; and farm visits, complete with lessons on making all-natural (aspartame-free) rice wine. The DGCN has also helped certain local restaurants develop vegetarian menus and convinced them to offer whole-grain brown rice. Starting in December, they’re planning on running a small co-op, where five members will live together, eat vegetarian, make their own compost, and produce no non-recyclable trash. Spring will see the inception of an indigenous bean and grain rehabilitation program, where participants receive seeds from local crops, raise them (at home or outdoors) for a year, return the same number of seeds to the center, and share the rest with friends. 그리고 가족들을 위한 숲, 사과 따기, 농장견학, 無-아스파탐( 합성 감미료) 천연막걸리 만들기 도 있었다. 대구녹색소비자연대 는 또한 지역 식당이 채식주의자 를 위한 메뉴를 개발하도록 도와 주고, 정백하지 않은 통현미를 사용하도록 권유해 오고 있다. 12월부터 이들은 작은 협동체를 계획하고 있었다. 여기서 5명이 같이 살며 채식을 하고, 스스로 행동하고, 그리고 재활용되지 않 는 쓰레기는 만들어내지 않을 것 이다. 봄에는 토종 콩과 곡물 부 활 프로그램을 시작하는데, 참가 자들은 토종 작물의 씨앗을 받아 서 1년 동안 집 안이나 집 밖에 서 그 작물들을 기르고, 다시 같 은 양의 씨앗들을 센터에 돌려준 다. 그리고 나머지는 친구들과 공유할 수 있다. 도시 정원화 과 정이 이제 시작되고 있다.

hile living in Korea it seems almost obvious that a trip to the DMZ is necessary. After all, we are living in the only country in world at the moment that has such a place and next to the only country in the world with a heredity communist government. It's easy to forget about it in our day to day lives, but it's truly fascinating. I have, unfortunately, only two months left in this wonderful country, so myself, my husband, my sister and my brother in-law decided it was time for the four of us to make the pilgrimage to the DMZ.

한국에 사는 동안 DMZ에 가보 는 것은 분명 필요해 보인다. 우 리는 지금 DMZ가 있는 유일한 나라이자, 전 세계에서 단 하나 뿐인 세습 공산주의 국가 옆에 살고 있다. 하루하루 살면서 쉽 게 잊는 사실이지만, 불행히도 두 달 후면 이 아름다운 나라를 떠나야 한다. 그래서 나와 남편, 동생과 제부 이렇게 4명은 DMZ 를 방문하기로 결정했다.

When searching for a tour I knew that more than anything else I wanted to go to the JSA ( Joint Security Area). So, we decided

to take a full day tour of the DMZ and Panmunjeom through Cosmonjin Tour (cosmojin.com). Booking with Cosmojin was easy as they have English speaking staff manning the phones. When you call be sure to know the number of people in your party and where in Seoul you will be staying. After, you will also need to email them your full names, nationalities and passport numbers. The tour itself takes off right near Itaewon, but a plus with Cosmojin is that they will pick you up just about anywhere in the city. We stayed at Bebop House in Hongdae and were picked up in the morning

TOURING THE DMZ and taken to Itaewon to get on the bus. 여행을 검색하면서 나는 어느 곳 보다 JSA(경동경비구역)에 가보 고 싶어 한다는 것을 알게 되었 다. 그리하여 우리는 코스모진 여행사(www.cosmojin.com) 을 통하여 DMZ와 판문점을 여 행하기로 결정하였다. 코스모진 에서 영어를 담당하는 직원이 있 어서 전화로 예약하기가 쉬웠다. 전화를 걸 때, 여행할 인원수와 서울 어디에 머무를 것인지 미 리 확실히 해야 한다. 그 후, 당 신의 성명과 국적, 여권번호들 도 이메일로 보내야 한다. 여행 일정은 이태원 근처에서 시작하 지만, 코스모진 여행사는 당신이 도시 어디에 있던지 데리러 간다 는 이점이 있다. 우리는 홍대에

있는 비밥하우스에 머물렀고, 다 음날 아침 DMZ로 향하는 버스 를 타기 위해 우리를 이태원으로 태워갔다.

Once on the bus, you can pay for your tour via cash or card. Our tour, the DMZ and JSA full day was 137,000 won each and well worth the price. Our first stop was Panmunjeom. We were taken into a large conference room at the visitor's centre and shown a slide show de-briefing us on the DMZ and laying out some ground rules such as "Don't point or gesture toward North Korea." It was later explained to us that this is taken as a sign of hostility toward the North and the Northern soldiers would then have pictures of you on file. Interesting. We were led into the famous conference room at the JSA where delegates from

North and South Korea meet to hold meetings and negations. It is here where you are able to take a step technically into North Korea and take photos with ROK soldiers. Our guide was an American soldier and filled us in on a many interesting stories about the kind of things that go on in this strange area, separated by only a small cement line where elite soldiers from the North and South stand and face each other each day. 버스에 타면 현금이나 신용카드 로 여행경비를 지불할 수 있다. After, our bus drove us to the Bridge of No Return where prisoners of war were allowed to cross, only once, into their chosen countries. Once we saw all we could at the JSA, we were brought back to the visitor's centre, complete with gift shop, and were able to explore the small, yet interesting, museum upstairs. Next we were taken to Imjingak Park. There, we feasted on dolsot bibimbap and soup which was tasty despite being served to us by people clearly agitated by our presence. This wasn't a big deal though as Imjingak proved to be a strange and interesting place. We had over an hour to look around the park which included a look out area, several monuments, a bridge and oddly enough a small Suseong Mot-esque amusement

park. Looking for a little early afternoon lift (the tour did leave at 8am after all) we hit up the viking ship and bumper cars. An interesting interlude in an otherwise very serious day. 그 후에 우리는 버스를 타고 ‘ 돌아오지 않는 다리’에 내렸다. 거기는 전쟁 포로들이 단 한 번 자신이 선택한 나라로 갈 수 있 는 곳이었다. JSA에서 우리가 볼 수 있는 것은 다 본 후에 다 시 방문객 센터로 돌아갔다. 기 념품 가게에 들러 물건을 사고, 위층에서 작지만 흥미로운 박물 관을 구경할 수 있었다. 다음은 임진각 공원에 도착했다. 우리 의 방문으로 인한 사람들의 술 렁거림 속에 돌솥비빔밥과 찌개 를 받긴 했지만, 정말 맛있었다. 한 시간 이상 임진각 공원을 돌 아다니며 여러 전쟁 기념비, 자 유의 다리, 바람개비 공원 등을 구경하였다. 이른 오후에 이 곳 (JSA) 일정이 끝났다. (여행은 아침 8시에 시작되었다.) 우리 는 바이킹과 범퍼카 등 놀이기구 를 탔다. 막간에 이러한 것이 없 었다면 아주 심각한 하루가 되었 을 것이다.

The second half of the day was dedicated to the DMZ. Our first stop was the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel. Here, you watch a lovely little South Korean propaganda film (it was a little silly) and then take a jaunt into the tunnel. A slight warning: this is a serious, real deal tunnel. It was not built for tourists. Walking down it is VERY steep and the tunnel itself is very low. You need to take a hardhat with you into the tunnel. Do not assume that you don't

TOURING THE DMZ need one, you will smoke your head on something about every fifteen seconds and be happy that you have it. Trust me. It was an interesting little walk and just the right length, I was happy when we came to the end as I was a little sore from being bent over the whole time and starting to feel just a little claustrophobic. Walking back up the tunnel was intense. Thanks to an accident when I was child, my left knee is essentially useless so I found the walk up very difficult. Luckily for me, my sister and husband were there to help me. Just a warning, if you have serious health issues, or major knee or back problems, this part of the tour may be difficult, however; I survived it, so you probably can, too. Up top there is another (and the last) gift shop of the day. 남은 반나절은 DMZ 일정이었 다. 그 첫 번째로 제 3 침투 땅 굴이었다. 여기에선 남한의 선 전 영화를 보여준다. (약간 바보 같음) 그 후 땅굴로 들어가게 된 다. 경고 심각하게도 이것은 진 짜 땅굴이다. 난 여행 체질이 아 닌 것 같다. 밑으로 내려가는 길 은 매우 가파르고 땅굴은 매우 낮았다. 땅굴로 들어갈 때는 반 드시 안전모를 써야 한다. ‘난 필요 없어’라는 생각은 하지 말 기를 바란다. 15초마다 무언가 가 당신의 머리를 때릴 것이고, 안전모를 썼다는 것에 행복할 것 이다. 내 말을 믿어라. 그것은 잠시 동안의 재미있는 걷기였고, 길이도 적당하다. 우리가 땅굴 끝에 도달했을때 난 안도감을 느 꼈다, 왜냐하면 땅굴에 있는 내 내 몸을 구부리느라 살짝 아팠 고, 약간의 폐쇄공포증을 느끼기

Next, the Dora Observatory. Here, you can look out into North Korea and actually see the propaganda village and other places in the area. It was really interesting and

there was a video show in Korean and English about the area and what exactly you were looking at. Be aware here that there is a yellow line painted on the ground. You cannot take photos beyond that line, ROK soldiers will come up to you, check your camera and possibly delete your photos or take your film. The final destination related to the tour was Dorasan Station. This was one of my favorite parts of the tour, it was completely uplifting. The station was built with money received as donations and is the last train station in South Korea with the hopes of being the first to North Korea after re-unification. There is an ultimate plan of one day being able to take a train all the way from Busan straight through Europe. continued on p28

The only downside of the tour came when we thought it was over. The tour bus will let you off at a few different locations, which is great, however it does stop at an amethyst factory. Fear not! We did not have to go inside, we didn't have to buy anything, it wasn't a big deal. In fact, some people left the tour then because it was close to their hotel. As for us, we used the rest room and popped into the Family Mart, grabbed a couple of beers and KGBs and stood by the bus talking about all the interesting, exciting and surprising things we had just seen. 여행이 끝났다고 생각했을 때, 유일하게 기분이 상한 순간이 왔 다. 여행 버스는 몇몇 장소에 내 려주기도 하지만, 자수정 공장 앞에도 멈춘다. 들어갈 필요도 없고, 아무것도 사지 않아도 되

Overall, the tour was wonderful, interesting and informative. For the most part, I felt that it was honest, objective and most interestingly, uplifting and positive. It is absolutely a must during your time living in South Korea. 전체적인 여정은 정말로 굉장했 고 흥미로웠으며, 유익했다. 대 부분 정직하고 객관적이었으며, 흥미롭고 고양되고 긍정적이었 음을 느꼈다. JSA & DMZ 여행 이야말로 한국에 살면서 반드시 가봐야 하는 곳임에 틀림없다.

s quintessentially Korean as Hite and Family Mart dinners, going to an exhibit solely for taking and posting pictures of your friends is an experience you have to try once. Luckily, Daegu’s EXCO Center is featuring an interactive trick art exhibit right now. The set up is pretty simple - paintings are displayed on the walls and floors. Have friends pose on top of or in front of the paintings. If you stand on the spot marked on the floor, when you take the picture it will appear as though your friends are in the painting. The hardest part, of course, is posing in a believ-

able manner. But don’t let that intimidate you! EXCO has really thought of everything, and has friendly, English-speaking assistants wandering around displays ready to help explain, pose, or even take a picture for you.

t is winter time, freezing and you don't have much gold to spend on going in some far-off warm paradise. Still you want to move, but you have seen every spot around the place, and you're just bored. Well then what would you think about going just a little bit outside of Daegu for a day-trip adventure? All you need is around 25,000w per soul, interested? 겨울이다. 날도 춥고, 멀리 떨어 진 따뜻한 낙원에서 지낼 돈도 별로 없다. 여전히 떠나고 싶지 만 주변의 모든 곳들은 이미 가 보았고, 그냥 심심할 뿐이다. 그

렇다면, 대구 근교로 하룻동안 여행을 떠나보는 것은 어떨까? 필요한 건 한 사람에 2만5천원 뿐이다. 구미가 당기지 않는가?

I knew you would be... So let's aim to Jikjisa, a Buddhist temple nearby Gimcheon. First you need to leave your sweet and warm home, so take your gloves, hat , your best wool clothes and anything that will do the trick against cold weather. You can leave early in the morning, or enjoy your time, the destination is not that far, remember ? Go to Dongdaegu station and ask a ticket

for Gimcheon, by Mugunghwa train. It costs around 5000w, a bit more, and takes a little less than an hour to get to the place. When you arrive in Gimcheon, exit the station and follow the street on the right. In less than 1 minute, you will see a bus-station, in front of a GS-Mart. Make sure you have 1,200w (bus fee) and wait for line 11. Once on board, you are only 20 minutes away from Jikjisa. And you can't miss the stop where you need to get off, it's the terminus. When you get off the bus, 10 more minutes to go following up the road across the country-side. You will see a park, and finally the temple. JIKJISA centuries. The Japanese invasion lead by Hideyoshi almost resulted in it's total destruction in the year 1592. As one of the monks of this temple, master Samyeong led a successful army of monk-soldier against the invasion, the temple then gained fame for nationalistic reasons, and was rebuilt in 1612 on royal credits.. It became one of the greatest temples of Korea, reaching it's climax in power with hundreds of temples under its command in the region, until the Japanese colonization in 1910, making it a subordinate of Haeinsa. 하지만 모든 건축물이 그 때에 지어진 것은 아니다. 시간이 지나면서 다시 손질하거나 재건을 거쳤다. 크게 다시 손을 본 것은 7 세기와 10세기였다. 1592년 일본의 히데 요시에 의한 침략은 절을 거의 파괴로 몰아 넣었다. 이 절의 승려 중 한 사람이었던 사 명대사는 승군(승려 부대)을 훌륭히 이끌어 적의 침략을 막았다. 그 후 나라에서 환대 를 받아 명성을 얻었고, 1612년 왕의 지원 으로 재건되었다. 1910년 일제 식민지화로 해인사에 종속되기 전까지, 직지사는 수 백 의 절을 아우르는 전성기에 달해 한국에서 가장 큰 절 중에 하나였다.

I f you went there a bit late, you can enjoy dinner on the way back. There are plenty of restaurants serving nice Bulgogi or Bibimbap. Like much of Korean culture, Minhwa was suppressed during the period of Japanese occupation, but it went through a revival during the 1980’s that has

continued to today. It first came to popularity during the late Cho‐ sun Dynasty. At that time, the artwork of the Yangban (양반), or aristocracy, was heavily influenced by Confucianism. Calligraphy was popular and the paintings of the era had a similarly somber, colorless style. These paintings focused on realism and avoided the symbolism common in earlier eras. Conversely, Minhwa paintings were often bright and colorful and used symbols from Shamanism and Buddhism. Each painting was intended as a wish or blessing for the owner. Thus, for example, a painting that included a magpie meant good news was on the way, and a painting of a dragon was intended to ward off evil spirits.

Little is known of the actual artists who created these paintings. Most were anonymous craftsmen who followed traveling festivals and markets and sold their paintings along the way to earn a living. How Can I Learn Minhwa? Just past Sawol station on the east side of town, Seung‐on Park (박 승온) has a studio (called 우리 민화 ㅡ woori minhwa) where she offers courses in folk art. Ms. Park has a masters degree in fine arts from Kyungsung university and has many artistic talents. In addition to folk painting, she also designs her own jewelry and eyeglass frames. You will see examples of all of these on display in her studio. In a normal course of four sessions, you can easily finish a painting. And don’t worry if you aren’t a naturally talented artist (I am certainly not), you will use a pattern, referred to as a sketch (본), to get started. Once you have this outline finished, you will “antique” the paper by applying, oddly enough, instant coffee mixed with a thin adhesive. Then the fun starts. Ms. Park will teach you all of the techniques used in the Minhwa style of painting. You will learn how to properly shade and how to blend and layer colors to create depth and realism. When you are satisfied with the result, you apply a final coat of the adhesive to protect it from damage and then you have it mounted. You have two choices for mount-

ing: on a traditional scroll or in a modern frame (in more advanced classes, you can also paint directly onto furniture, mirror frames, etc.). And that’s it. Now you have

or practically 20 years now, medical lasers have been used for things like tattoo removing, clearing up zit scars and other blemishes, and eradicating darkish spots on the skin. Now they are being authorised by the FDA and used for such things as wrinkle removing, tooth whitening, and hair removal. Is it really everlasting? Many laser hair removing suppliers tout their processes asÂ "permanent." The FDA says there should be sufficient proof to assist those claims and it's truly giving some producers authorization to state "permanent hair reduction" but not "removal." Still, laser hair removal is usually a nice possibility for anyone wanting to take away unwanted hair from anyplace on their bodies. It works for both men and women, and is simpler if the hair is noticeably darker than the skin. How does it work? As laser mildly passes through the skin, it's converted to heat and is absorbed by the pigment melanin within the hair follicle, successfully disabling the follicle itself and thus stopping further growth. Some scientific trials have been profitable in stopping hair re-development for as much as two years, making laser hair elimination one of many longest-lasting hair removal methods. There are an a variety of benefits of laser hair elimination over 40

other forms of hair elimination such as waxing, sugaring, depilatory creams, tweezing, etc. For one, the process is non-invasive, and does not require lotions or needles. One other benefit is that the sunshine beams(intense pulsed light, IPL) can move shortly, and effectively deal with bigger areas in a small quantity of time. And remember the lengthyterm results. Some times the long pulsed Nd-Yag laser shows better result than IPL when the hair is thin, less dark and even those who have dark colored skin.

The Korea Society for Dermatology reported a mean single treatment value round of $100-400 depends on the unwanted hairy area. Many areas require multiple therapies (at least 5 times should be taken by monthly) to gain the utmost benefit, so the cost can add up. Before treatment can begin, a person must be balanced for an accurate assessment. The treatment was probably the best part of the trip! Dr. Shin works with an oriental doctor specializing in herbal treatments. After a patient diagnosis, she sends information to the oriental doctor. The doctor picks all the herbs for the patient and uses the best quality water to make the medicine. The medicine is made in the Ulsan, the country side, and usually arrives in a day or two. Most of the medicine is in a liquid form but can be chewable as well. Before leaving, Dr. Shin made some suggestions about acupuncture, which are do not shower for five hours after treatment; no intoxication; and fatigue is normal after the first time. Behind the Decks -an Interview with Myagi Myagi is one of the world’s more accomplished party rockers, expertly blending a mix of party breaks, electro, techno and mashup — then letting it loose on the dance floor. He is one of Canada’s most recognized DJs, both at home and abroad, with his music garnering support from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Annie Nightingale, Utah Saints, Dub Pistols and Pete Tong. It’s in the studio, however, that Myagi has had his most important successes. Selling thousands upon thousands of units with almost 50 releases — both originals and remixes — published, including his much-lauded artist album “3 Years Of Sunrise,” which got a whopping4.5/5 — and called a masterpiece to boot — in the scene-defining publication DJ Mag. There are few in the industry that can rival Myagi’sunique style behind the decks, as he is relentless about showcasing his signature blend of breaks. With another album set for release,Myagi firmly entrenches himself as one the industry’s elite, both on and off the decks. What inspired you to become a DJ? I never knew there was an option! Just kidding — I think it was just a desire to play music Ilove,and to have a good time and to get more people to have a good time with 48

me.I tend to be just as happy playing for 10 people at some private after-party as I am for 5,000 at a festival — it’s a great feeling to make things work together and to watch people feeding off of your energy. What was your parent’s reaction to your career choice? I don’t think they really got it at first, but they were always really supportive.I think they understood I wasn’t totally mental when I was able to walk into 7-Eleven in my hometown and pick up a magazine that had a big photo of me in it… It was validation for the beats that had been pumping out of my bedroom for years. When did you start producing music? Why?

I started when I was ateenager, I can’t really remember (exactly) …I was in a band and decided I wanted to work on electronic music on my own, and so it just made sense. It was hard in those days.You couldn’t really run a studio from a computer in the same way that you can today, so I had a lot of external gear and old analog equipment to buy.My first record came out in 2001 and since then it’s been a constant output of music. Do you feel that a DJ needs to produce music? It depends on what they want to do — to play in local clubs, no.If they want to do any real touring or become known outside of their local scene, then absolutely, yes. Everyone’s a producer nowadays

BEHIND THE DECKS - MYAGI though, so if it’s something that you want to do I suggest being serious about it. This will entail more than just watching YouTube tutorials! How has technology improved your sets? Cool mixes and tricks are way easier to pull off now than they used to be — though I still love to watch a true turntablist.I think technology is at a good point now.For a while, every club had different systems, different mixers, etc. — it was hard to know what to expect when you walked in the door and that’s one of the reasons I switched onto a laptop back in 2003. What is a track you never get tired of playing? A tune of mine called “Giorgio Maurader”… it’s like four years old or so, but it still just kills whenever I drop it.It layers up well with other stuff and just has huge builds that drive people nuts. What is the general consensus about spinning in Korea? I love it. I love the crowds, the culture, and most of all the food.I eat, and make, a lot of kimchi at home, but nothing is the same as the real thing on the ROK.The shows are great and a lot of fun. I don’t want to take anything away from the club experiences I have, as Korea is world class that way, but it’s the country that I really

enjoy. How do you motivate yourself before a set? Dinner and drinks with friends, usually followed up by a few minutes alone.I like to make sure I know how the system sounds; I’ll almost always go and find the sweet spot in the room before I play while someone else is on the decks.I’ll try and hear whether it’s a bass-y room or if there’s a lot of bite in the

high end, and I’ll adjust my eq’ing accordingly. What can we expect from you in the future? My new album “Ape and Essence” is about to come out, and it’s getting really good reviews.It’s my most dance-floor friendly long-player and has lots of vocals on it — mainly by me, but also some guests.It’s actually coming out as a remixable edition for Soundtrends programs Meta.

DJ and Looptastic for the iPad/ iPhone/iPod.I’m doing a lot more synthesizer sound design for the U.K.-based company FXPansion, too. I’m really passionate about that and I love sound creation. What is the strangest thing you have witnessed behind the decks? The last time I toured Korea my final show was an underground club in Busan. It was there I saw a drunken sailor get hit with a stun gun by a bouncer like 10 feet from me.It cleared the dance floor out and there was a big scene — I played a protest track by NWA and it brought people back on the floor with a smile. I found out later that he was Russian and could not speak English, but he should not have been slamming into the decks nor harassing the ladies, but think the bouncers were a little overzealous. What advice do you have for aspiring DJs/producers? Learn your trade but remember that going out and rocking a party is the biggest part of what you do.It’s important to spend a lot of time working on tunes, working on your skills, working on your sound, but you’ve gotta be fun. Party hard but always make your flight.Write music for yourself and hope it works for the dance floor; if you’re in this for the right reasons, it often will.

HELPFUL WINTER TIPS - SAVE ON GAS

just got my January gas bill: a whopping 47 bucks. Not entirely unreasonable, considering that some people spend double that per month on phone bills, but then again, it’s just slightly less than what I spent in total from May through December. Not to mention that last year I apparently used twice as much gas in February as in January, meaning that next month I may have to fork over 100 bucks. That’s five percent of my salary, or the equivalent of 20 meals out at my favorite restaurant. I’ve been racking my brain, and my friends’,

for ways to avoid such a catastrophe. Here’s what we’ve come up with:

1) Window blockers. Everyone knows better than to leave windows open, but sometimes even double-paned windows that are locked tight still let in a bit of a breeze. If this is the case in your place, and if you’ve got access to the area outside your window, consider putting up one of these plastic sheets that keep the cold out and the heat in. You can buy them at HomePlus (usually around the automotive section), and all they take to install is some tape and a hairdryer. You’ll feel the difference immediately. 2) Limit the area you heat. If you live in a studio, lucky you, you can ignore this one, but if you’ve got spare rooms, go have a look at your boiler. You can remove the metal case covering the pipes that come out of the bottom,

fiddle with some valves, and turn off the heating to the rooms you don’t use. It may take you a few tries to figure out exactly what’s what, but a cold shower or two never hurt anyone, right? 3) Speaking of which, if you’re daring enough, incorporate more cold into your shower. Your hair and head aren’t all that sensitive, so it’s definitely possible to do your shampoos cold, provided you contort your body just-so and avoid getting it wet. 4) Get low, get local. Forget couches, beds, and dining room tables. Eat, sleep, and play on the floor, closest to the source of the heat. 5) Turn down the temperature. This should be a no-brainer, but just in case: have a look at what you’re wearing . If you’re in your underwear, something’s wrong. High temperature differentials make the outside feel colder, and also make you more likely to catch colds. 20C (68F) is the suggested indoor winter temperature in many parts, but I’ve found that

Our first stop, the colourful building on our left, is also one of the oldest bag vendors in town. Viniroo opened its door 3 years ago under the masterful gaze of owner and bagtender June Park. Inside, you’ll find a dark and comfortable space with a small table at the back and some seats along the bar. Most importantly, you’ll find Viniroo’s extensive drink menu on top of the counter. Drawing on 14 years of experience mixing cocktails, June has created a massive and largely indecipherable list of possible hangover-makers for you to choose from. 5000w will let you try any drink, though some are offered a bit cheaper at 4000w. And, while almost all of June’s drinks are secret recipes, he’s particularly proud of of the “Blue Spider” and the “Blue Castle Bomber,” the latter of which he promises to include an exciting fire show. Bunny Kim, a mainstay of the expat bar scene, opened her shop with co-owner and co-tender Matt Smith in October this year. Featuring an intimate row of seats along the front of the bar and a large wall begging you to scribble on it, Bunny’s is a social place to enjoy a vinyl treat. In addition to being the only foreign owned and operated bag bar in town, Bunny’s also breaks ground by offering 3 different sizes of bag for all of their drinks, which range from 3000-8000w for most and 5000-10,000w for whiskey-based mixes. Again, a few unique drinks are on the menu, including the aptly named “Jungle Juice” and the delicious “Strawberry Surprise.” “Jungle Juice,” in particular, has the potential to serve up a Sunday morning sense of shame without the memory of exactly what caused it - exactly what you might be looking for in an IV bag filled

with alcohol. Bunny’s is open from 8:00pm-1:00am on weekdays and 7:00pm-4:00am on weekends. Returning to Rodeo Street, a short crawl north takes us to our final stop, GoGo Vinyl. Another long-termer, GoGo Vinyl is an outlet of the nearby GoGo Party club, both of which serve up vinyl cocktails. Together, they’ve been operating for about 3 years. A small table inside gives you just enough room to get drunk with 8 of your closest friends. All of the drinks on the menu are priced at 5000w, unless for some reason you’re bringing a

child here and want to order it a non-alcoholic version for 4000w. GoGo Vinyl features the “GoGo Bomb” for a masochistic soju-andenergy kick or the “Banana Girl” for the tropical princess in all of us. And, if you’re getting sick of bagged drinks, GoGo Vinyl will hook you up with 2000w shots of tequila to get you back on track. GoGo Vinyl opens at 6:00pm every day and only quits when the crowd quits. CALLING WATER PROJECT

ave you ever heard about the 'Calling Water Project'? Maybe, yes! In August 2011, Daegu Compass Magazine wrote an article about CWP. Seobu Calling Water Project is a project which creates a pure donation culture through donating what people have. Anyone from Seogu and Bukgu such as regional celebrities, parents of students, and residents acting in any field can take part in this project. There are four donating fields, for example teaching dance, English, playing instruments and so on. Next, space donation is lending a venue for a performance, music practice and rooms for study. Volunteering during events or programs. Jung donation is like being a big brother in America. Daegu Seobu Office of Education (the chief, Park Soon Hae) held a briefing session on the results of Seobu Calling Water Project at the International seminar hall, Information building at Young Jin College on December 16th. It was for encouraging the education donors who participated in the Calling Water Project, inspiring participants' minds and planning

for 2012. During the briefing session, Park Soon Hae, the chief coordinator of the project, addressed a crowd of 1,000 people, which included education donators, heads of MOUs, elementary and middle school principals of the region and new members of the project. Park Soon Hae reported on the progress of the project and handed out rewards and discussed special

cases that reflected the goals and desires of the CWP. The priest, Jeong Kyeong Ho, who was an education donator expressed his opinion, "I just wanted to share something small with a simple thought of volunteering. I was so happy to be part of this project. I hope more people will take part in donation culture and work together." The chief of Daegu Seobu Office of Education, Park Soon Hae said, "Until now, talent donation, space

donation, volunteering donation and Jung donation totaled 630 cases. Also, the number of donators reached 60,677. The results were beyond expectation. The people involved have been the foundation which attaches dreaming wings to many students within our province. I hope education donation culture will be activated much more through continuous and active participation." It must be good experience for us living as a member of a different culture community to donate what we have to another member. Please keep having interest and support on this project. Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. Going up the hill towards Apsan from Nammyeong Intersection, Pizza Place is on your right, just before Sleepless in Seattle. True to its namesake in a light and intimate atmosphere, you can expect to find a restaurant catering to original Italian oven Pizza. Anyone who takes pizza seriously knows it all starts out with the right dough and simple but excellent ingredients. Here you’ll find classic margherita, prosciutto, salami, napoletana, and four-cheese pizzas made with imported mozzarella, fresh basil, and the best part: two delicious crusts. Pizza Place’s napolicrust is softer and roma style crust is crispier. Try a romaine caesar salad or delicious home-made bruschetta as a side, and have a Peroni beer or glass of wine.

It reminded me of similar small restaurants in Italy, with Firenze style T-bone Steak and Spaghetti Menu. The meat quality of T-bone Steak is quite good. Gook Su uses only 한우. Price is reasonable compared to other restaurants. A 350g T-bone Steak is 37,000won and enough portion for a couple. The tender meat was best to with red wine. Napoli pizza is also recommended menu. It was served with fresh ingredients and thin soft dough and cost only 14,000won.

The owner, Tristan, used to work at the headquarters of Hand's Coffee; a popular Korean coffee franchise. With a variety of coffee beans to select from: Kenya, Brazil, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Papa New Guinea, ESPRESSO&COMPANY is not your typical coffee shop. Oh, they also have the premier espresso machine, La Marzocco, which is Italian made and costs about as much as a new car. There are only a handful of these machines in Korea and Daegu is lucky to have one. A wood-fired tandoor oven seeps into your senses as you enter the door to this fantastic Indian/Nepali restaurant. Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display.
