On a cold and blustery winter night, we ventured out to the Bang Cheon Traditional Market (방천시장) to enjoy a wonderful new restaurant, Barazi (바라지). For those of you who don’t know where it is, it’s about a 10 minute walk from the Kyungpook National University Hospital ( 경대병원역) subway exit number 3. Just head straight after coming up from the escalator, and on you’ll see the market on your right-hand side about 5 minutes later. Go to the entrance where there is a huge square sculpture archway (the second arch way). Go under it and make your second right. Look down about 100 meters or so, and you’ll see their red sign on the left-hand side. 8

Enough about where it is, how about what it is! Well, it’s a Japanese inspired restaurant / flower shop (more about the flower shop later) that serves traditional Japanese food, but with a Ha Ik Jun (하익준) twist. Ik Jun opened this unique restaurant just a month ago because he was inspired by his Korean-Japanese girlfriend (Korean born, but raised in Japan) to do so. He loved the food so much, but wanted to make it with his own flare.

Now on to the ‘meat and potatoes’ of this place, the food! Barazi offers a small, but delicious menu of various types of noodle dishes, potato pancakes, egg rolls, and booze. The first menu item we got to try was the Bokum Udon (볶음우동). For the next month, this dish will be sold for only 6,000 won at lunch time (12-3 pm), so hurry on up and stop by! The long, thick noodles, topped with thinly sliced sesame leaves (깻잎), seasoned pork, and various vegetables are surrounded by a deliciously sweet, but slightly spicy sauce. The top layer is what I like to call ‘dancing fish flakes’ (가츠오부시 – Katsuobushi), which are a very thinly-sliced smoked fish flakes that moves from the heat of the food. At dinner time, the dish is served with the addition of seafood for the price of 9,000 won. We also got to try the Barazi Soup (바라지탕), which is offered in two sizes – small for 15,000 won and large for 18,000 won. If you love fish cakes (어 묵/오뎅), then you will absolutely love this one! fish cakes, ranging from spicy to vegetable medley, and thick to thin. But that’s not all, there’s also quail eggs and a fried tofu-wrapped package of noodles (유부주머 니) floating about. I’m probably the least excited person to eat fish, but I actually ate it and really enjoyed the plethora of flavors that awakened my taste buds! Two side dishes were then served: a potato pancake ( 감자전 – 6,000 won/lunch and 8,000 won/dinner) and Castella egg roll (카스텔라 계란말이 – 6,000 won). Both were great, but the egg roll was so soft and delicious, especially with the tangy wasabi soy sauce to dip the pieces in. I’ve never tasted an egg roll so sweet and creamy before! As an extra bonus treat to us, Ik Jun brought out a Flaming Sake drink (불타는 사케) for 4,000 won. It comes in a beautiful clay cup and is set on fire as it is being poured out of the kettle. This warm drink is perfect for the cold nights we are enduring these days.

Ik Jun is also a talented florist who has been in the business for eight years before opening up a restaurant. He has a pamphlet that shows all the different types of arrangements he can do – simple ‘I Love You’ bouquets, wedding bouquets, air plants, and grand opening displays. If you are interested, ask for the booklet and browse through them while you are awaiting your delicious food to be served, or just help yourself and grab it off the shelf. Barazi is down a hidden street, but it’s not so hidden that you can’t find it! After strolling down the Kim Kwang Suk Road (김광석 길), wander on over to Barazi and enjoy some warm noodle dishes, beautifully crafted traditional Japanese plates, and a nice warm glass of sake. In Ik Jun’s words, “Stop by for some flowers and booze with food.”

When I eat Paella, I always enjoy scraping off the last bits of remaining fried rice with my spoon. On top of that each table is adorned with real flowers and the interior décor of the restaurant makes me feel that Spain not only has great cuisine, but is a place to visit one day as well. 특히 나는 빠에야를 먹을 때 팬에 붙은 고소한 밥알을 긁어 먹는 것도 하나의 재미이다. 그뿐만이 아니라 테 이블 마다 놓인 생화와 스페인를 느낄 수 있는 인테리 어는 보는 이로 하여금 먹는 재미뿐만 아니라 보는 재 미까지도 선사한다.

You can order Paella as a single serving, however whether a single or double order, it will still come in just one pan. Rather than ordering two Paellas for two people (should you go with a friend), I suggest trying the Paella for one person and then ordering -continued on p14-

There is so much to see and do in Seoul. My husband and I recently took the train to Seoul and spent several days shopping and participating in group tours. I wanted to share some of those experiences with you so that you can get as much enjoyment out of the city as we did. This was not our first trip to Seoul but it was our best. 서울에는 볼거리와 해볼 것들이 가득하다. 최근 남편과 함 께 기차를 타고 서울에 가서 쇼핑과 단체 투어에 참가를 하 며 몇 일 동안 머물렀다. 그리고 이 글을 통해 우리가 서울 에서 즐겁게 즐겼던 만큼 이 글을 읽는 독자들도 좋은 시간 을 보내기 바라며 우리의 경험담을 함께 나누고 싶다. 이 번이 첫번째 서울 여행은 아니었지만 최고의 여행이었다.

Our favorite market is Namdaemun. It's especially fun during the holiday season because they sell unique Christmas boxes and decorations that are not the typical ones we are used to. In the same area was Alpha which is the stationary superstore. We literally got lost inside because there are so many stairs and halls to traverse. Outside, my husband found me a nice cape which I wore over my other coat to keep warm. There were a lot of clothes, toys, and souvenirs to buy. We saw stairs leading to an underground section of the market. It looked like a great way to stay warm. I realized we hit the jackpot. It's the place to buy craft supplies and 16

party favors, things I was looking for. The prices were much cheaper than I could find in Daegu so I will be going back to that underground section on my next trip to Seoul. 우리가 가장 좋아하는 시장은 남대문 시장이다. 특히 휴일 시즌이 더 재미있는데 외국에서 사용하는 전형적인 아이 템이 아닌 독특한 크리스마스 박스와 장식물들을 팔고 있 기 때문이다. 같은 시장 안에 ‘알파’라는 대형 문구점이 있 는데 수많은 계단과 가로질러야 하는 넓은 홀 때문에 말 그대로 안에서 길을 잃었다. 바깥에서는 남편이 나를 위 해 겉옷 위에 한 번 더 따뜻하게 두를 수 있는 멋진 망토 를 발견했다. 그 외에도 산더미 같은 옷과 장난감, 기념품 들이 가득했다. 그리고 시장 지하로 내려가는 계단을 보게 되었다. 지하로 내려가면 정말 따뜻할 것 같았는데 내려가 는 순간 잭팟을 터뜨렸다는 생각이 들었다. 그 곳에는 내 가 찾던 공예재료들과 파티 용품들이 있었다. 대구에서 보 다 훨씬 더 싼 가격이어서 다음 서울에 와도 다시 그 지하 매장에 들를 생각이다.

My husband and I are aquarium enthusiasts and knew that there must be a part of town where we could look at tropical fish. After searching several blog sites, we set off to Dongdaemun Market. It's known as the clothing market district but it also has an interesting variety of small pets. We saw hedge hogs, turtles, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, and pheasants for sale. We kept on

walking and eventually found the aquarium district. It was truly amazing. Going into the salt water aquarium stores was like being taken back in time. We could tell how healthy the tanks were and that they had been established many years ago. Keeping salt water fish so healthy is both a science and an art. We visited at least ten freshwater tropical fish stores as well. They were amazing and we experienced more variety there than in any other place in Korea. 남편과 나는 수족관에 열광하는 사람들이어서 열대 물고기들을 볼 수 있는 장소가 서울에 있다는 것을 알 고 있었다. 우리는 몇 군데의 블로그를 살펴 본 후에 동대문 시장을 떠났다. 동대문 시장은 옷을 전문으로 파는 시장으로 알려져 있는다. 흥미로운 소형 애완동 물이 다양하게 있는 곳이기도 하다. 시장에는 고슴도 치, 거북이, 기니피그, 토끼, 오리, 비둘기 등을 팔고 있었다. 우리는 계속해서 발걸음을 옮겼고 마침내 물 고기를 파는 구역을 찾아냈다. 정말 멋진 곳이었다. 바닷물 수족관 상점에 들어서니 마치 시간을 거슬러 올라가는 듯 했다. 수조는 정말 양호한 편이었고, 수 년 전에 만들어졌다고 분명히 말할 수 있었다. 바닷 물 물고기를 그렇게 건강하게 키우는 것은 과학이자 예술이다. 우리는 민물 열대어 가게도 적어도 10군 -continued on p18-

The first tour we went on was the Palace Tour. Our first stop was Jogye-sa Buddhist Temple. We were wondering why there were so many news reporters outside of the temple. We were told that there was a strike and that a labor union leader was staying in the temple. Next, we visited the Gyeongbokgung Palace. We were told ahead of time that we needed to be there prior to 10 AM and were pleasantly surprised to find out why. Every morning, there is a changing of the guard ceremony. First, a guard hits a giant drum. Then, a parade of guards and musicians came out from behind the palace walls. We learned that this was not the original royal palace. Our tour guide Mark told us how the Japanese destroyed the original one during their occupation and how it was rebuilt to preserve their national heritage. We walked to the National Folk Museum of Korea. We were happy to warm up inside the free museum. After the museum, we had a quick drive by The Blue House which is the residence of President Park Geun-hye. Mark told us about her three firsts. She is the first woman President of Korea, the first President to have a father who was 18

also President and the first single President. The last part of the tour was fun the first day. We later found out it would be the last part of every tour that we took. It was a stop to Seoul Amethyst. The staff showed us how jewelry was made and had beautiful displays of amethyst statues and jewelry. A few people on our tour actually bought jewelry and were very satisfied with the quality. 우리가 갔던 첫번째 투어는 궁궐 투어였다. 첫번째 목적지 는 조계사였다. 우리는 절 밖에 왜 그렇게 많은 뉴스 기자 들이 있는 지 궁금했다. 그러자 파업이 있었는데 사찰 내 에 노동조합장이 머무르고 있다고 들었다. 다음으로 경복 궁에 갔다. 이미 우리는 오전 10시 이전에 도착해야 한다 는 이야기를 들었었고, 왜 그래야 했는지 이유를 알게 되 어 기쁨으로 놀랐다. 매일 아침에 수문장 교대의식이 있 다. 제일 먼저 병사가 거대한 북을 두드리고 성벽 뒤에서 타악대와 수문장의 행진이 나왔다. 우리는 궁전건물이 원 형이 아니라고 들었다. 투어가이드인 마크가 어떻게 일제 강점기 동안 일제가 원래의 궁을 파괴했는지 어떻게 국가 유산을 보존하기 위해 재건축을 했는지에 대해 말해주었 다. 그 다음으로 걸러서 국립민속박물관으로 갔고, 무료 박물관 안에서 따뜻하게 있을 수 있어서 행복했다. 박물 관 다음으로 버스를 타고 박근혜 대통령이 살고 있는 청와 대 옆을 지나갔다. 마크는 그녀가 만든 세가지 첫 번째에 대해 말해줬다. 박근혜 대통령은 한국의 첫 번째 여성 대 통령이고, 아버지가 대통령인 첫 번째 대통령이며, 첫 번

째 미혼 대통령이다. 투어의 마지막은 첫 번째 날의 재미 있었던 부분이었다. 후에 알게 된 것이었는데 우리가 갔던 모든 투어의 마지막 코스가 될 수도 있었다. 바로 ‘서울 자 수정’이 그 곳이었다. 직원은 보석이 어떻게 만들어지는지 보여주었고 내부에는 아름다운 자수정 상과 보석을 전시 해두었다. 투어 그룹의 몇몇 사람들은 실제로 보석을 샀고 보석의 퀄리티에 굉장히 만족했다.

Our second tour was to the DMZ or Demilitarized Zone. The first stop was a nice park right outside of the DMZ. The most emotional part of the tour was at this point because there were messages hung all over the gate at the closed bridge. The messages were calls for peace and notes to loved ones in North Korea. At this point, we saw the Peace Bell and an old steam locomotive. We also walked inside of Dorasan Station, the northern most train station in South Korea. The next stop on the tour was The Third Tunnel. South Korea has discovered four infiltration tunnels which were built by North Korea in an attempt to move troops to the South. Luckily, they were discovered and interestingly, Tunnel 3 has become a tourist trap. The walk down was easy and

after about 10 minutes, we were in the humid tunnel which still has visible dynamite holes and charcoal on it. We were told that it was covered in charcoal by the North Koreans because they tried to claim they were mining for coal. However, there is none in this area. The walk back up was pretty steep and by the time we made it to the top, we realized that it started snowing outside. Therefore, the last part of our trip was cancelled. It was to an observation tower. Instead, our tour guide gave us a briefing using a mural on the wall. He pointed to the North Korean city of Kijeongdong. It's known as the propaganda city because it's built like a Hollywood movie set. The one thing that is real is their flag pole which stands at 525 feet. He showed us the farm land which is being cultivated by a small village of people who live inside of the DMZ and which areas we would be seeing on our next tour. 투어의 두번째 여행지는 DMZ였다. 첫번째로 멈춰선 곳 은 DMZ 바로 바깥에 있는 멋진 공원이었다. 투어에서 가 장 감동적이었던 순간이었는데 폐쇄된 다리에 메세지가 담긴 리본 등이걸려져 있었기 때문이었다. 그 내용은 평화 를 기원하고 북쪽에 있는 사랑하는 사람들에게 보내는 편 -continued on p20-

지였다. 이 때 평화의 종과 오래된 증기기관차를 보게 되 었다. 그리고 남한에서 가장북쪽에 위치한 도라산 역 내 부에도 들어가 보았다. 다음 목적지는 제 3땅굴이었다. 남한은 북한이 군대를 남한으로 내려 보내려는 의도를 가 지고 만든 침투 목적의 땅굴을 네 개나 발견했다. 다행히 도 사전에 발견이 되었고 흥미롭게도 제 3 땅굴은 관광지 가 되었다. 걸어서 내려가는 건 어렵지 않았고 10분쯤 지 나자 아직도 숯으로 덮인 선명한 다이나마이트 구멍이 남 아있는 습한 굴로 진입하게 되었다. 숯은 북한이 덮었다 고 했는데 석탄을 채굴하기 위해서라고 굴을 팠다고 주장 하기 위해서였다. 하지만 이 지역에는 석탄이 없다. 다시 걸어서 올라가는 건 꽤 가팔랐고 위로 올라 왔을 때에는 바깥에 눈이 내기리 시작했다. 그래서 투어의 마지막 코 스는 취소가 되었는데 전망대 코스였다. 대신에 가이드가 벽에 있는 벽화를 이용하여 짧은 설명을 해주었다. 가이

군 사령부에서 간단한 설명을 듣고 난 후 판문점 회의장 건물로 가기 위해 다른 버스로 갈아탔다. 이 때가 서울 여 행 중 가장 드라마틱한 순간이었다. 왜냐하면 우리가 건 물 안에 있는 회담 탁자 반대편으로 가면 북한 땅에 있는 것이기 때문이었다. 다음으로 기정동과 한국전쟁 이후 포 로들을 교환했던 ‘돌아올 수 없는 다리’를 볼 수 있는 전망 대로 갔다. 그리고 더 가까이에서 보기 위해 버스를 타고 다리 아래와 기념지로 향했다. 투어 내내, 우리는 항상 감 시 받았으며 어떠한 갑작스런 행동이나 돌발 행동을 하지 않도록 주의받았다. 투어의 마지막은 비빔밥 점심이었다.

Next, we went to a lookout point where we saw Kijeongdong and the Bridge of No Return where prisoners were exchanged after the Korean War. Then, our bus took us down to the bridge and a memorial site to get a closer look. Throughout the tour, we knew we were always being watched and were warned not to make any sudden or unexpected movements. The last part of our tour was a bibimbap lunch.

I highly recommend taking the time to discover Seoul by spending time at the markets and attending group tours. The guides are well trained and offer insights that you can't read about. We were so grateful to travel to Seoul to and to learn about the history of Korea. There is an island far, far away where people voluntarily choose to plunge to deep ocean depths every day. This can be daunting for some, but for most, once their fins slip into the water and bubbles begin to rise, a moment begins to build like the first time they learned how to ride a bike. When the fear of falling, or in this case breathing underwater subsides, people can experience that rare moment of pure joy. They trust that a single tank filled with 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen will keep them alive for 40 some odd minutes. They believe that the person guiding them, who is virtually a complete stranger by the way, is in complete control and will return them to safety. Koh Tao is a mixed bag of fun, mayhem and relaxation. It rests peacefully in the Gulf of Thailand just north of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. The island boasts over 50 dive resorts and shops to select from. There are large operations like Buddha View Dive Resort, Ban's Diving, Crystal and plenty of smaller shops. There are also different organizations to choose from with PADI being the most famous, SSI up and coming and a few NAUI dive shops. There are conversations taking place

at this very moment where the merits of each organization are hotly debated, but for most on vacation, these differences are a mute point as each organization puts the diver's safety first and that is the most important point! Most of the dive shops offer free rooms with their dive course packages, so the challenge is finding the right dive shop. Buddha View Dive Resort has some of the best facilities and instructors on the island. It is located in Chalok Bay and offers beginner open-water scuba diving courses to instructor training courses. 코타오는 재미와 광란과 휴식이 한 데 섞인 곳이다. 코 파 냥과 코 사무이의 북쪽에 있는 타이만에서는 평화롭게 자 리 잡고 있으며, 섬에는 50개가 넘는 잠수 리조트와 가게 가 있어 마음대로 고를 수가 있다. 부다 뷰 다이브 리조트, 반즈 다이빙, 크리스털와 같은 대규모 시설과 그 외의 많 은 작은 규모의 다이브 샵들이 있다. 그리고 다양한 잠수 협회도 있는데 PADI가 가장 유명하고 SSI는 새로 떠오르 는 곳이며 몇몇 NAUI 관련 다이브 샵들도 있다. 요즘 들 어 각 협회의 장점에 대해 뜨겁게 논쟁이 일어나고 있다 는 말이 있는데 대부분 휴가의 경우에는 이러한 차이점 들이 아무 상관이 없다. 각각의 협회 모두 다이버의 안전 을 최우선으로 하며 그 것이 가장 중요하기 때문이다. 대 -continued on p24-

At the southern tip lies Chalok Bay. Chalok Bay has a fantastic sand bar in the early afternoon where people can walk out to and sunbathe. It is also home to the best dive shop on Koh Tao, Buddha View Dive Resort. When people aren't diving, they seem to be relaxing at Babaloo. A one of a kind beach bar, equipped with ocean hammocks, fire shows and beach buckets of course. Chalok Bay is also home to Bar Next Door, Buddha Bar and Reggae Bar. There is also a place called Castle that throws wicked raves four times a month. There are a lot of great accommodations along the beach, Tropicana being the best and Sunshine Beach Resort being an ant infested trap. Make sure to ask to see the room before booking and talk to folks who are staying there about their experience. Backpackers are pretty honest when it comes to finding cheap and clean places to stay on the island. 24

Many people come to this island just for scuba diving, but there are those who arrive to experience the pristine beaches and meet fellow party people on the Full Moon Party circuit. Sairee beach is the main beach and closest to Mae Haad pier. It is where the main party people come to play. There are beach bars, restaurants, shops and ATM machines. Lotus bar, Fish Bowl and Koh Tao's famous pub crawl at Choppers are where most of the wild things play at night. An upscale resort and great beach bar can be found at Maya Beach Resort. It can get very crowded in this area before and after the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, so it pays to book accommodation ahead of time. Getting to the island is fairly simple depending on your budget and time constraints. The easy way is to fly into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International airport and book a flight to Koh Samui through Bangkok Airways ($350). When you exit the airport there is a ferry from Samui to Koh Tao through Lomprayah high speed ferry company (600baht). It takes about 2 hours before it reaches the island. The ferry stops at Koh Phangan first and then Koh Tao. Beach bungalows during high season from December to March and July to August usually run around 600-1200 baht a night for a clean room, 26

Final words of wisdom: rent motorbikes at places that accept copies of a passport. Do not leave a passport with a motorbike shop. If they insist, move onto the next. Some reputable places to rent bikes are at P & N Guesthouse (Chalok Bay) and Buddha View 2 Bike Shop (Chalok Bay). They do have a deposit charge of 5,000 baht, but as long as the bike is in the same condition when it is returned, there'll be no hassle receiving the deposit back. You used to live in Korea. What inspired you to head to Japan? How was the transition from Korea to Japan as an artist? Whilst in Korea in 2008, I took a summer vacation to Japan for a week. I went to Fuji Rock Music Festival, couch surfed with Mochan at his famous Wish Club in Shizuoka, hiked around Kurama north of Kyoto City and got lost in sweaty Osaka, too. During my trip, albeit short, I experienced a sort of de ja vous numerous times, the kind you know when you feel as if you have been to this place before, although it was definitely my first time ever to Japan. Something just clicked, over and over, and it wasn't just the noisy chirping of the cicadas in summer either. Wish Club에서 카우치 서핑을 하고, 교토시 북쪽의 쿠라 마 근처를 등산하고, 땀이 뻘뻘 나는 오사카에서 길을 잃 어버리기도 했다. 여행을 하는 동안 비록 짧기는 했지만 많은 데자뷰 현상을 겪었다. 일본에 온 건 확실히 생애 처 음이긴 하지만 마치 이전에 이 장소에 와 본 듯 한 느낌을 받는 그런 것 말이다. 그런 잠깐 잠깐의 순간들이 계속 해 서 일어났고, 여름에 시끄럽게 떠들석거리며 울어대는 매 미는 아니었다. 내 생각에는 그 한 주가 내 흥미를 최고조 로 이끌었던 것 같다. 그 후에 미래에 일본에서 더 많은 시 간을 보내기 위해 일본으로 돌아와 일을 하는 것에 대해 심사숙고하기 시작했다.

Artistically, I transitioned from a super-megalopolis Seoul to a small fishing village on the sea of just a few thousand, so there were many changes and challenges, like finding an outlet for my work. Being predominately a muralist, I thrive in concrete jungles with endless wall space. In Japan, I could not find a bunch of trash to build dinosaurs like the one I put up in Apgujeong, or paint under bridges with my graffiti buddies BARNES, BLUCE, GRL and BFMIN like at Sindorim, so I had to get back to the basics. Just pen and paper, I would just go home every day after teaching English at the local public schools to my sketchbooks at the small kitchen table and start out with something Japan in mind, or maybe a picture from an old history book for reference. 간이 있는 콘크리트 정글에서 성공할 수 있다. 일본에서 는 압구정에 세웠던 공룡 같은 것을 만들기 위한 쓰레기를 한 가득 찾거나 신도림에서 그래피티 동료인 BARNES, BLUCE, GRL and BFMIN와 함께 다리 아래를 페인팅 할 수도 없다. 그래서 나는 기본으로 돌아와야 했다. 단순 히 펜과 종이로, 매일 지역 공립 학교에서 영어를 가르치 고 집에 와서 작은 부엌상 위의 스케치북에 대고 마음 속 에 있는 어떤 일본적인 것부터 시작해보았다. 아마 오래 된 역사책의 그림 같은 걸 참고했었다. 그 것은 2012년 에 펴낸 나의 첫번째 책, Japan 365: A Drawing-ADay Project으로 탄생된 단순하며 명상적인 작업 아이 디어 였다.

More philosophically then, regarding content and working habits as an artist, I found that in Korea, my work reflected my life and health. From a young, energetic standpoint as a first-time expat 23 years young, painting big and bright images at popular festivals all around Seoul in the summer, to a near-death encounter with pneumonia and images of cold, skulls, and other dark and brooding content in the heart of winter. You took a different approach than most to get funding for your book. Can you talk a little bit about your experience with www.indiegogo.com and how it helped springboard your idea? If you hadn't had any funding, would you have gone through with the project anyway? For my first book Japan 365 and for my new book Life Is Sweet, I chose to crowd fund in order to cover publishing and printing costs for a small first run. Indiegogo, like Kickstarter and all the other crowd funding platforms popping up now, is basically just a smooth way to interface with all your networks at once, in a way that lets your immediate friends and contacts, spread your message or project just as easily, in the hopes that is keeps going further and further to the second and third and fourth degrees of relation to yourself, going viral, as the lingo goes, and thus increasing your fan-base and pre-sales, essentially. 당신은 책을 펴내기 위한 자금을 모으기 위해 대부분의 사람들과는 다른 방법을 사용했다. www.indiegogo. com 에 대한 경험을 조금 이야기해 줄 수 있는가? 만 약 자금을 모으지 못 했다면 어떻게든 이 프로젝트를 해 냈을 수 있었을까? 나의 첫번째 책이었던 Japan365와 새로운 책인 “Life is Sweet”의 경우, 처음 작게 시작을 하려고 출판 및 인 쇄 비용을 해결하기 위해서 크라우드 펀드를 선택했다. I reckon without the funding I was able to raise for making these books, I would have had to pursue a more traditional route, finding an agent, who then finds you a publisher, who then chops up and changes your content and takes half your -continued on p32-

My personal experience with indiegogo was great, since I did in fact successfully raise my funding goal both times for both books. I chose indiegogo since they let you keep funds even if you don't reach your goal. That is the big difference between them and Kickstarter, which is more for the gambler. Kickstarter also seems to lean heavily on the tech/maker movement, whereas indiegogo is heavier on cause-based fundraising. I wanted to raise extra and give money to charity for Japan after 3/11, so that was

profit, your work and vision can flourish freely, rather than just catering to what the publishing cronies assume will sell and "selling out." I personally prefer quality not quantity.

royalties, making it an altogether unpleasant experience, except for the fact that "YAY!" you got on the dusty shelves of Barnes & Noble chain big-box bookstores. Besides, I live fairly hand-to-mouth as a semi-nomadic artist who escapades as a teacher, cook, migrant farm laborer, etc. when necessary to keep the travel alive. I would not have had the time to sit around and pitch agents all day with all with their nit-picky requests, or sift through the publishing houses cryptic websites to find the right person to e-mail my manuscript and pictures to. What I have learned thus far of the current system, is that it makes it all but impossible for the working author to get published for the first time, in an uncomfortably elitist, exclusionist kind of way. Not that I am jaded or anything, though. On the contrary, that is what makes self-publishing like this so exciting for me and my friends. To be able to do what the big publishing houses don't want you to do. That is slowly break down their iron fisted grip on the entire industry of publishing by taking out the money grubbing middleman. And getting your work in the hands of those who will appreciate it most, giving them a hand in creation, involving them in the process, thanking them in the liner notes, and doing this all without having to focus on the business side of things and trying to forge a

You spent 3-months experiencing life as a sugar cane farmer first hand, what is the number one thing you learned about the people whose lives depend on that product? While working the sugarcane fields on Ishigaki Island, I experienced a lifestyle that I cannot say I recommend as such. Waking every morning before sunrise with swollen hands and sore feet, dreading the rain and snakes, wondering how, and why, I got myself in this predicament, a tireless schedule felling 2 tons of sugarcane every day. Though if you are physically and mentally able to toil long hours in often frustrating conditions and brave monotony with a level head, I would recommend trying it or something like it for a stint, to at least gain deeper appreciation for where our everyday ingredients come from before they hit store shelves in pretty packaging ready for consumption.

The people who work in this industry are completely reliant on a complex system of supply and demand, along with seemingly arbitrary determinants of cost. What that means is, the local factory gives farmers a number, forty dollars per ton for example, and the farmers have to take it or leave it, bringing in their cut cane by the truckload to be weighed and paid out, simple as that. Though on a small island like Ishigaki, not taking the factory's offer is not really an option. And the seasonal jobs that come during harvest for three or four months are highly sought after, with factories working round the clock, field hands piling as much cane as they can in the daylight hours, 12-ton dump trucks barreling down tiny roads toward pay dirt at the factory. The flip-side of that coin though is that when the season ends, so do lots of jobs, transforming the modern work infrastructure per the demands of large corporations sugar-buying power, and in effect taking the power from the local people to engage in sustainable traditional lifestyles without the income from alien entities dragooning them into submission, and turning once diverse fields into blanket cash crops, depleting the soil and destroying diversity for the short term gain. For me, as if getting 365 high-quality pictures drawn in a year was not hard enough, I then had to round up a solid and reliable team of translators, bilingual friends who could help me not only edit the English, but translate into Japanese, proof and edit that as well. Once the content was complete, and a PDF created, you simply upload your interior and cover files, make some choices regarding what kind of International Standard Book Number you want to use, paper type, trim size, and other printing logistics that you will decide on depending on your project.

What were the biggest challenges you faced besides the physical labour and language barrier during the creation of your book? The biggest challenges for me with Life Is Sweet were not really the physical labor or language barrier, because by this time I had been in Japan nearly three years and was adept at the language to a point more than comfortable in everyday conversation. The farmer whose fields I worked for the most part still could not help himself laughing every time we met, maybe because he just couldn't believe a tall, dorky American was cutting all his cane, or maybe I constantly had a booger. Regardless, his local dialect was sometimes hard to understand being so different from mainland Japanese language, but he did his best to meet me halfway and would often just bark words at me in the

field and repeat them loudly so I would definitely catch his drift. I took no offense, and appreciated his simplicity. I would recommend the self-publishing route via crowd funding to anyone with a passion and idea. Just remember you need to put in the time and hard work to see it through, because as soon as people give you a down payment on your product, you have to pull through. So perhaps even more so than with traditional publishing, the logistics, design, decision-making, pricing, distribution planning and more is entirely up to you. This means that the city can vitalize its medical tourism industry through co-marketing with tourism/large-scale meeting/exhibition-related organizations. Last year in October, EXCO, Korea National Tourism Organization, and Daegu Council of Development for Medical Tourism signed a contract on business cooperation to promote medical tourism in Daegu. The three organizations have focused on integrating MICE into development of tour packages, and carrying out collaborative marketing. An aspect that has made the most active progress is running “information/experience stores.” Daegu International Textile Fair was held in March; visitors experienced stores from Daegu’s medical tourism department. Visitors received simple medical check-ups at the stores. These stores were part of the promotion strategy to expand Daegu’s “Medi-City” image. The city is already beginning to see some tangible results. Expanding Flights and Accommodations Medical tourism is literally a combination of “medical treatment” and “tourism.” It is imperative that the two concepts balance each other well. Yet, Daegu continues to receive comments that it has insufficient number of flights and accommodations. As of now, the only international flight available at Daegu’s International Airport is the route to China. Only two flights are scheduled each day to go to Incheon International Airport. next year in March, a low-cost airport agency will be flying between Daegu and Jeju, but whether there will be another international flight remains uncertain. Unlike those tourists who come for cosmetics/ medical purposes, foreigners who visit Korea to receive treatment on major illnesses are compelled to feel burdened by the long-distance bus rides from Incheon and Gimhae to Daegu. Even in terms of costs, this method is very uneconomical. The city government and local medical community agree that it is essential that Daegu International Airport accommodates more international flights and low-cost flight agencies. Another point of weakness is that the city lacks international level, five-star hotels for VIPs and that motels make up the majority of Daegu’s accommodations.

One Chinese medical tourist who stayed at Daegu’s high-class hotel this summer has actually complained that the hotel’s old accommodations were markedly below expectations. Mr. Lee Guho, the Head of Foreign Economic Cooperation at Dongsan Medical Center, has advised, “While Daegu has a relatively low medical expense and price level, it lacks accommodations where patients can stay during their treatments. The city should prioritize differentiating its service from other regions by providing accommodations where patients can conveniently stay in the long-term.”

In December 2013, Antwon Maxwell relocated from Washington D.C. to South Korea to work as an IT Specialist for the US Army. Antwon has an associateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Computing Network Systems and a passion for computers but has found a new love in photography. As Antwonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest in photography grew, he became obsessed with refining and improving his photographic technique and post-editing skills. He took a photography class, read photography magazines and books, and watched hours of photography videos. In 2012, Antwon started Dezignsbyma Photography and began to build his portfolio by doing photo shoots for anyone who was willing to get in front of his camera. This allowed Ant42

Antwon is currently based out of Daegu, but can also be found traveling throughout South Korea photographing women, men and couples in studio or on location. What do you love about photography? How has it changed your life? I love photographing ordinary people and showing their true beauty through my lens. My biggest reward is when someone comes to me thinking they aren't good enough, pretty enough, slim enough, or tall enough and I am able to make that person feel like a million bucks through my pictures. Once the client is in front of my camera, I want them to feel like they have my full attention and my only goal is to make them look and feel beautiful. I enjoy photographing a broad spectrum of people, from professional models and ballerinas to teachers and computer technicians; I believe everyone is capable of looking great and having fun in front of the camera. phy because I find it easier to control my own lighting back backgrounds. What do you use for inspiration? Who are some of your favorite photographers to follow? I find inspiration in many places including fashion magazines, pictures I find online, even billboard and bus ads. I admire the works of famous head shot photographer Peter Hurley and am being mentored by professional photographer James Anthony who travels across the United States photographing celebrities and models. Though I do frequently conduct on-location shoots, most of my work is shot in studio. Lighting is very important, and I like the versatility I get from having full control of the lighting in studio. I like my pictures to evoke an emotion. Shooting in studio allows me to control the placement of shadows and highlights to convey the emotion and mood I want. Studio photography also allows me to be more creative in post-editing. I find myself immersing myself in countless hours of photography videos, reading photography and fashion magazines, and retouching my photographs. It is truly a labor of love.

The show covers the entirety of Picasso's work which ranged from his portraits of women, to studies of nudes and more mythical pieces inspired by poetry. Walking through the show is a reminder of how much he accomplished in his lifetime as he was constantly experimenting with different styles and mediums while managing to master each one. Each piece is stunning to look at as even the most simple of sketches reveal carefully thought out lines and forms, each mark on the page is no accident. While some pieces are more simplistic than others, each holds its own and gives a glimpse into how Picasso viewed the world.

The works also give us a glimpse into the artist’s personal relationships, particularly with the many women who featured in his life. Regardless of if she was a mistress or a wife, these women seem to have been important to Picasso at some point as each one comes up a number of times throughout the show. The different women also reflect what style he was working in at that point in time. The bright happy works from Picasso's early career are mostly of his mistress at the time, Fernande Olivier. The cheeriness of the scenes reflect the love and happiness he had for this woman.

He ended up painting over 60 portraits of her. completely unique as the vivid lines and forms change drastically from frame to frame. It is only on closer view that you realize each work is the same in content, but differs in execution. By altering forms and the use of lines, Picasso shows us how the same image can be changed and viewed in many different ways. What separates this exhibition from others is the way in which the artist’s life is told through photographs incorporated into the shows layout. There are sections 46

dedicated to beautiful images of Picasso at home with his friends, in his studio, with his wife and in simple solitary reflection. We are also given a glimpse of the city in which he spent a majority of his life through stunning before and after shots of various locations. A number of the photographs were taken on 8 April 1973, at his home in Mougins, France where he is shown surrounded by friends and his wife laughing and enjoying life. These images have an eerie feel as Picasso died later that night with the final words, "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink anymore." The show is so much more than walking through a gallery filled with paintings and leaves you with a satisfied feeling of completion. Black History Month in Daegu Bringing some Diversity and Culture to the City Written by Jet Cessant

From the spirited African dancers in Rain’s music video for his hit track, “LA Song,” to the hip-hop clothing boutiques that line the streets of Hongdae in Seoul, African-American or black influence can be seen all over Korea. Unfortunately though, Korean media continues to be laden with stereotypes of African Americans, and sometimes its socalled “influence” from black culture acts as a façade for cultural appropriation. “Korean media tends to promote blacks as mostly rappers, thugs, and hip-hop artists when in actuality, there is a lot of diversity in our history and culture. Just as Koreans are more than K-pop and kimchi, Black Americans are more than gangsters, the Caribbean is more than just Bob Marley, and Africa is more than poverty,” comments Kellea Floyd, an English Teacher in Daegu. While Korea’s misunderstanding of cultural differences can be attributed to its reputation as one of the most homogenous countries in the world, the recent influx of immigrants and expatriates is slowly diversifying the population. In contrast with Korea, the United States is known as a melting pot of diversity and culture. Across the country, many different racial and ethnic groups often celebrate their heritage during certain times of the year. For example, the month of February is known as Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual observance that remembers African-American icons and leaders, significant events in history, and 48

culture. The month is marked by festivals, concerts, and television programs around the United States that celebrate African-American history and cultural heritage while raising awareness to current issues in the black community. While Black History Month has traditionally been celebrated mainly in the United States, a group of native English teachers in Korea are about to change that. This year, for the first time in Daegu, a Black History Month Festival will be held. The festival will occur on February 22, 2014 and will be sponsored by the United States Embassy and The Korean Adolescent Mentoring Program. The festival will consist of three segments. The first will be a movie screening of the movie, “The Butler,” in the Daegu American Corner in the Jungang Library. Following the movie, participants will reflect and discuss key events presented in the movie and engage in an interactive discussion on the black experience in the United States as well as issues for people of color in Korea. The second segment will be a cultural festival in downtown Daegu at the stage in front of Daegu Department Store. Performers from all over Korea will showcase a variety

of talents that are rooted in black culture. The lineup includes African dance, stepping, dancehall, R&B, gospel, spoken word, and much more. The festivities for the day will conclude at Rock N’ Tacos where attendees will be able to network and talk about the day’s events. Takira Lytle, co-chair of the Black History Month Festival, hopes that the event will help to educate Koreans about African-Americans and eliminate negative stereotypes that they may have. “I think that as more black people and other minorities from other countries come into Korea, over time a clearer picture can develop” she says. The festival has already generated a lot of buzz. Korean-American rapper and singer Yoon Mirae, who was born to an African-American father, has expressed a strong interest in attending the celebration. The event is free and open to anyone. Members of the community are also encouraged to perform if they have a relevant talent. The DFP@C is a friendly gathering of Koreans and expats who love nothing more than hanging out, having a few beers, and watching movies. And by movies, we don't mean big blockbusters anybody can see on TV. Here at the DFP@C, we specialize in those movies you've been meaning to see, but never got around to. Under-the-radar flicks are our forte. Our humble group began over 3 years ago with Steve Mayeux and Rob Yates. Hyun Shik, the proprietor of Communes: Lonely Hearts Bar in downtown Daegu, loves films and happily projects them onto his wall with excellent surround-sound. Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
