Anthony Browne Exhibition
A Happy Museum
From January 4th-April 14th, come to M Ga, the Daegu MBC gallery, to see Anthony Browne’s exhibition. This exhibition was held in Seoul last year and over 10,000 visitors came to the Seoul Arts Center during its first week. Where other exhibitions can be more formal, this exhibition is welcoming to first-time visitors and boasts the subtitle, “Happy Museum”.
With his unique imagination and exotic pictures, Anthony Browne is one of the most beloved children’s book writers and illustrators in the world, especially among Korean mothers. You can see 200 original pictures, some statues that he created with other artists, and video clips in a free and relaxing atmosphere.

The exhibition also has hands-on and educational programs. <Happy Library> offers books written by Anthony Browne and children can enjoy the books freely. <Shape Game> is a show that promotes creativity through performances by musical actors and actresses. <Happy Docent> has information and will help guide you through exhibition easily. At the <Drawing Art Toy> section, you can draw your own gorilla and chimpanzee. -continued on p10-

The most popular section is <Happy Library>. You can read Anthony Browne’s books as much as you want and see the exhibited pictures again in his books. Family members can sit together and be absorbed into the world of Anthony Browne’s books. <Shape Game> was invented by Anthony Browne and his brother, which can aid in developing creativity. Visitors draw a shape on paper, then the next person can add more shapes to complete a picture. The picture is then made into a show with musical actors and actresses, helping participants gain confidence with creating stories. Welcome to Anthony Browne’s exhibition which will keep you warm in the cold winter.

(Anthony Edward Tudor Browne)
Anthony Browne started his career in 1976 and was awarded Kate Greenway Medal with <Gorilla> in 1983 and <Zoo> in 1992. In 2000, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the highest honor a children’s writer or illustrator can win. His unique imagination, simple witty expression, solid structure and detail, and exotic paintings are the best thing about Browne’s books. He has spread the creativity game, called “Shape Game” and released a series of little bear books that have magical pencils. His writing reflects various feelings, in detail, that children go through at home, with his extraordinary insight into the human mind. His illustrations are contemporary, with a touch of surrealism, and establishes his own unique artistic territory.

Daegu Shinsegae Department Store A New Shopping World to Revive the Local Economy • Written and translated by Yujeong Lee Photos courtesy of Shinsegae Promotion Department
Daegu Shinsegae Department Store created a cultural shopping complex, where you can experience everything from shopping to leisure and culture. The building has nine floors, seven underground floors, and a 3,000 car parking lot. The building is almost as big as the Centum City branch, which holds the Guinness Record as the biggest department store in the world. The building is designed so that customers can see all the brands, within a specific category, on each floor. It has ‘CHICOR’, Shinsegae’s brand new cosmetic shop; ‘BOONTHESHOP’, a luxury brand shop; ‘Toy Kingdom’, run by E-Mart, ‘Electro Mart’, where you can try and buy all kinds of electronic devices, from cellphones to home appliances; and much more. In addition to these shops, there are total of 700 brands represented, including 50 luxury brands, 40 cosmetic brands, and COS, a premium SPA brand. Daegu Shinsegae offers an amazing shopping opportunity.

Considering the lack of easily accessible leisure facilities in Daegu, this Shinsegae branch offers many options that other department stores don’t have. Customers can easily access the shopping complex via KTX, local and intercity/ express buses. As soon as you enter, go to the 9th floor to experience the first-ever aquarium located in a department store, and also in Daegu. There is a rooftop theme park, ZOORAJI, and an indoor theme park with the concept of a giant’s room. Famille Town has a “Trampoline Park” where adults and children can both enjoy trampolines.

There are more things there to help you enjoy your free time. You can watch a movie at ‘Mega Box’, read some books at ‘Bandi & Lunis’ bookstore, appreciate some art pieces at the ‘Gallery’, and enjoy a show at ‘Munhwa Hall’. Daegu Shinsegae also offers ‘Shinsegae Academy’, that offers visitors about 1300 classes so they can learn something new. Dongdaegu Complex Transit Center, shortened to Dongdaegu Terminal, was designed to create a commercial and transportation facility in a same space. There, you can transfer to the KTX, take a local train, an intercity bus, a

local bus, access the subway, and hail a taxi - all within 10 min on foot. This accessibility has increased the number of visitors from outside Daegu and is raising awareness of Daegu as a tourist destination. Daegu Shinsegae contributes to the local economy as a member of community. Not only did they establish a local corporation and created jobs, but they will soon offer scholarships to local students, partner with a local traditional markets, and sell more local products. They will hire local citizens over others and hopefully, this will help reduce the number of young people leaving Daegu. Also, the facility has over 140 local business inside including food, fashion, and lifestyle. -continued on p14-

Jae-young Jang, the CEO/Rep Director of Shinsegae and Rep Director of Daegu Shinsegae, said “Daegu Shinsegae is a multicultural shopping space with all the know-how of the Shinsegae group. Using the benefit of the attached transit center, we will make it landmark in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, where customers of all ages will visit, and it will become a leader in the local economy.”

Greg’s Homegrown
• Written and photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva [www.memoriesnotmaterialthings.com] Translated by Yujeong Lee
Organic Farm Stand Arrives in Suseong-gu
Over the last few years, I’ve been consciously trying to consume more organic, locally produced food (and less processed food) in a bid to be healthier and to limit the amount of chemicals, pesticides and metals that I accumulate in my body. Plus, the more I eat, the more I find it just tastes better. So I was ecstatic to hear about the recent opening of Greg’s Homegrown Farm Stand in Suseong-gu, selling fine homegrown organic vegetables, home-cured smoked meats, and preservative-free desserts.
16
Greg’s Homegrown
On a bitterly cold Saturday in January, I dragged my friend out of the warmth to go check out this new business in town. We arrived at lunchtime specifically to try the BBQ pulled pork sandwich I’d seen advertised on the store’s Facebook page. We were not disappointed! Lathered in lovingly homemade bbq sauce, the tender pork was snuggled into a fresh baked Korean heirloom whole wheat bun and stacked high with a red and green cabbage slaw. One bite and I was transported back to my home state of Missouri, where Kansas City arguably produces some of the most renowned BBQ restaurants in America. I devoured every morsel and my messy fingers were a testament to its deliciousness.
http://www.daegucompass.com
Regrettably, Greg’s Homegrown doesn’t have a designated place to sit and eat on site yet, but that’s not really what his farm stand is about. It’s there to provide residents of Daegu a place where they can purchase quality local organic products to use at home for a reasonable price. For sale in the farm stand are hard to come by American staples including an authentic marinara sauce. Greg’s one liter jar, which he sells for 12,000won, was thickly
made of tomatoes, onions, hard-cured anchovies, and organic oregano and basil. Also available for purchase are crisp pickled green beans; spiced tangerines from Jeju preserved in raw sugar syrup with cinnamon and clove; Korean sauerkraut; candied Korean ginger; mulberry and bush cherry jam; apple-smoked, grass-feed beef jerky; and a hot sauce he called Pepper Candy. -continued on p18-

In addition to these store cupboard goods, Greg’s Homegrown offers a variety of fresh products including homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies for 500won. And on the day we were there, he had slices of organic pumpkin pie with a vanilla and lemon zest meringue topping. The lemons fresh from Jeju. The real jewel in the store though is found in the cooler section, where shoppers can pick up some delicious home-cured smoked meats including bacon (300g/8,000Won) and pastrami (150g/8,000won). Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, Greg also roasts his own coffee beans with his homemade roaster. On offer the weekend we visited, was a freshly roasted Ethiopian Sidamo for the bargain price of 1,000won. Worth the visit alone.
18
Greg’s Homegrown
Greg grows his produce on a small farm outside of town where he has an extensive variety of organic herbs, vegetables and fruit. He explained that his farm stand offerings will constantly change in the coming months based on what’s been freshly harvested. In the future, he hopes to offer red and green okra and homemade pesto using organic basil. Also one day he hopes to add some bee hives to produce the honey for his baking, oh and maybe some chickens too.
http://www.daegucompass.com
When we arrived in the middle of a weekend lunchtime rush, Greg was busy making some homemade organic, vegan rye crisp-breads. ‘It’s a new recipe I’m trying out,’ he said. It was visibly evident to me that Greg is extremely passionate about what he does and enthusiastic about providing the people of Daegu with locally produced, organic, farm to table food. In an age of mass production, it’s a blessing to have such a local homegrown business on our doorsteps. Upscale Sushi in Suseong-Dong
• Written and photographed by Michael Clark Translated by Yujeong Lee
For those of us that don’t mind going up the hill for a little upscale sashimi, we found a nice little, romantic, private room or barstool (your preference) style sashimi place, specializing in fresh catch, specifically Tuna 참치. You are well-greeted as soon as you set foot in the doorway and catered to like a seasoned VIP. From the moment you arrive, the service is prompt and courteous, and you are seated quickly in a private room, with a table based on the size of your party (reservations recommended on weekends).

Immediately after getting settled in, your appetizers, usually the head of the tuna, seasoned with a beef style braise, are brought out, with some side Kimchi’s and your choice of drink (Beer and Soju / Wine are available of course). The table is sunken, so although it appears to be a traditional Asian style low table, your legs are actually in a sunken area, underneath the table, and it is very comfortable, with backrests.

The décor is comfortable and quiet, with a sliding door between the private rooms and it is very clean, with really artsy porcelain and appropriate dinnerware to match the style of food. Shortly after the appetizer, the first main course of sashimi is brought out and is a sight to behold. It is presented in a little garden of wood with sprigs of parsley and glass noodles (almost too good to touch), with little mounds of wasabi on each corner of the serving plate.

Throughout the dinner, several courses of sashimi are served in different plate arrangements, along with miso and a hot noodle soup at the end, or your choice of what I would like to call a “micro” dolsot bibimbap or stone pot rice pot with vegetables and caviar. Of course, the fish is as fresh as it gets and the taste is out of this world. The cost for this wonderful sashimi delight comes in at 50,000 WON per adult and children eat for 25,000 WON. Well worth the cost if you like sashimi, especially since the service and atmosphere were top-notch. The Chef will visit your table several times personally to check on you during the meal to make sure everything is to your liking. -continued on p22-

The Chef also prepared us a special tri-colored cocktail, delivering it to our table as an added bonus. I think one of the best things about Honmaru is that it’s off the beaten path, small, cozy and a little bit dim, sort of out of the main drag, which makes it romantic and personal. It is a great place to take a date (or that special someone), or to go when you just want to be out of the mainstream and take time to really enjoy your food and relax in a comfortable atmosphere, where you aren’t rushed and it isn’t loud and obnoxious. I highly recommend Honmaru specifically for that reason and will look forward to my next visit very soon.

Where Dreams Come True
There are many Buddhist statues all over Korea. According to Wikipedia, nearly 23 percent of Koreans are Buddhists and Koreans history relies heavy on Buddhism. However, here in the Daegu metropolitan area, there is a special Buddhist statute that might make all of your dreams and prayers come true. On the Gyeongsan side of Palgongsan is a single granite Buddhist sculpture that is about 4m tall and has a 15cm hat on his thick stone head. It is located on the peak of Gwan on a high rough area of Palgongsan. This sculpture is a special stone seated medicine Buddha called Gatbawi.

According to legend, a big crane would fly every night to guard the Gatbawi Buddha while it was being created. Because of this, it is reputed as a miraculous Buddha stone in where if you truly believe in your prayers, wishes and dreams with all of your heart, then they will be responded by this Buddha statue and eventually come true.

This could be one of the main reasons why Gatbawi is so busy during late fall when parents are praying and wishing that their high school kids do well on the university entrance exam taken every year. Gatbawi is located on the Gyeongsan side of Palgongsan but it is still a pretty good drive to get there if you don't live near Gyeongsan'sHayang. When I went there, I came from the downtown Gyeongsan area and it took about 45 minutes to drive there. It is mostly a country drive once you get past Yeungnam University.
When I arrived to Gatbawi, it took another 45 minutes to go to the top from the parking lot and Gatbawi's Service Plaza. It was a very difficult but interesting hike as it was mostly all uphill. Once you get to the entrance gates of Gatbawi, the uphill turns into stairs, many, many, many stairs. -continued on p26-

On the hike up, I saw many street market type places that were selling souvenirs, and street market food and hot drinks. The hot drinks were nice as it was a cold day with strong gusts of wind blowing during different times of my hike to the top. About 200 meters from the top, there is an area where some people were bowing and praying to Buddha on a floor mat, with lighted candles all around the area. 정상에서 200m 정도의구역에는곳곳에불켜진초와바닥매트에 서부처에게절하고기도하는사람들이있다. the top of Gwan Peak (after hiking up more stairs). At the top is where you will see the Gatbawi Buddhist sculpture with his hat. Many people were on mats praying and bowing to this sculpture. I saw a beautiful aerial view of Palgongsan from the top as well. And on the Buddhist sculpture were many coins stuck to the stone. If you were able to stick your coin into the stone, this also means that your wishes, prayers and dreams would come true later. There was also lighted candles in front of the prayers who were bowing down on floor mats.

On the hike down to the bottom, it was a lot easier (especially on the legs) as it took shorter (as it always does when you hike down mountains). It took only around 25 to 30 minutes to go down. However going down, you have to be careful because the stairs are a little steep so watch your step.

Despite it being a difficult hike to the top, it was very good for me. I got some well-needed exercise and of course it is all mountainous so the air was fresh (which is always good). So, if you have time and want to say a special prayer (and have it come true), then I recommend you to go to Daehan-ri, Wacheon-myeon in Gyeongsan (by car or bus - Bus number 803), and then take the hike up to Gatbawi especially with the spring season coming soon.

What It's Like to Have a 'Big Dog' • Written by Bridgett Hernandez [www.thenakedforeigner.com] Photos by Bridgett Hernandez and Flikr Translated by Yujeong Lee
A lot of our friends and family members have asked us how our dog, Clark, has liked living in South Korea, so I thought I’d share what it’s been like to live abroad with our pet. Clark, a beagle mix, is five years old. My husband, Chris, adopted him from an animal shelter when he was a puppy, and he has been a part of the family ever since. Clark has been instrumental in helping Chris cope with his symptoms of combat-related PTSD which worsened after his medical discharge from the U.S. Army. This has earned Clark recognition as an emotional support animal by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Getting Clark to South Korea
On the day of our departure, our stomachs were in knots. Traveling internationally with a pet involves a million moving parts, and we were so worried that something would go awry with our paperwork, not to mention the 12hour flight! At the airport check-in, we were mortified when Clark slipped out of his collar and jumped over the counter to say hello to the staff. Thankfully, they thought it was a riot, so the story of his little maneuver quickly spread among the Korean Air staff at O’Hare so that when we got to our gate, he was greeted with much fanfare: “So you’re the dog that jumped over the counter, huh?”

Thanks to Clark’s status as an emotional support animal, he was able to join us in the cabin. He had never been on an airplane before, so we didn’t know how he would react, but was perfect — no accidents, no whining. Most of the time, he just slept at our feet, sticking his nose between our tray tables during meal service.
A dog’s life in South Korea
Clark is well-suited to apartment living; he’s well potty trained, he’s pretty quiet, and, even though he doesn’t have his own yard, he loves his walks. We’re lucky to live next to a big park. On the street, Korean people are usually surprised to see such a “big” dog. They say, “Wah! Keun gae!” (Wow! What a big dog!). Clark is just shy of 50 pounds, which would put him in the medium category in the U.S., however large breeds aren’t common in South Korea. -continued on p30-

Reactions to Clark
Although our neighborhood is home to several Jindo dogs and golden retrievers, pedestrians are generally wary of Clark. It sometimes feels like we’re walking a tiger. They usually give us a wide berth, and some people even step off the side walk into the street or cross the street altogether. We half-jokingly worry that we’re going to cause someone to get hit by a car. Some people freeze. On countless occasions, people have jumped and yelped in fear. Most people just stare or try to get a reaction out of him by whistling or clicking. Only a few brave people actually come up to us and pet him. Once, when we were sitting outside of Starbucks, a woman in high heels and a mini skirt approached us. I immediately started to get nervous because he can be a little too friendly when he meets new people; I imagined him jumping on her nice clothes and giving her a slobbery kiss on the mouth, but, much to my surprise, she knelt down and started to play with him.
30
South Korea
The downside to living abroad with a pet
The main downside to living in South Korea with a “big” dog is that it’s harder to travel. We don’t own a car, and we can’t bring him on public transportation, so we have to leave him behind. Clark has never spent much time in a cage, so boarding him hasn’t really been an option. We’ve been fortunate enough to find a wonderful dog sitter in our neighborhood. However, I did manage to take Clark hiking last winter. We took a taxi from our apartment to the base of the mountain, and I just threw a blanket over the backseat. Last summer, we rented a car and took him with us on a camping trip.
http://www.daegucompass.com
So has it been worth it? Definitely. Sometimes I feel a little embarrassed for doting on Clark so much — leaving long, detailed instructions for the dog sitter or making him a birthday cake — but then I remember how short dogs’ lives are and how much joy he brings to ours and I realize that I don’t care what people think. My two cents: Life is short and there are already plenty of ordinary days, so don’t miss an opportunity to celebrate the little things! If you’re thinking about adopting a pet, especially a large dog, in Korea, I implore you to think long and hard about your decision. Facebook groups for expats are full of animals that people are trying to get rid of because they’re moving. If you do decide to adopt a dog, please consider rescuing an animal from a shelter. The Hannah Shelter in Daegu is full of dogs looking for forever homes.

Leaving Korea? Important Things to Remember • Written by Lindsay Mickles
The 2016-2017 EPIK Contract Year is coming to a close, and many of us are busy preparing to embark on new adventures. Before leaving Korea, there are a number of things to think about and take care of. I’ve compiled a list of all the things you need to get sorted before hopping on a plane and having a major facepalm moment:
32
Leaving Korea?
1. Pension Refund
If you are eligible, you can apply for your pension refund within one month of your leaving date. They will not start processing the refund until you leave and you should receive the money 4-6 weeks after exiting the country. You need to bring the following to the pension office: passport, ARC, copy of your flight ticket/itinerary, bank details. *If you will have the money transferred to your bank back home, bring all the info they may need (SWIFT, routing number, etc.).
http://www.daegucompass.com
2. Severance Pay
This will be handled by your school and also cannot be paid out until the completion of your contract. Make sure to provide your school with your complete bank details.
3. Exit Allowance
1,300,000 KRW will be paid out by your school AFTER the last day of the contract. It is best to provide your school with your home bank details if you are closing your Korean account. **People who are stay in Korea but no longer work with the DMOE,are not eligible for the exit allowance. People who have picked up official copies of documents from the DMOE will have to take an extra step in order to receive their exit allowance. They will be asked to provide proof of leaving the country (plane ticket usually) or proof of enrollment if changing to a student visa later on. Those people will be contacted directly. -continued on p34-
DAEGU COMPASS FEBRUARY 2017
33
4. Key Money
If you paid key money, make sure to coordinate the refund with your landlord.
5. Security Deposit Return (for 1st years)
600,000 KRW will be paid out by your school within the last month of the contract (look out for it in your last paycheck), if it isn't needed to cover any property damage. It may be helpful to talk with your co-teacher or school financial administrator about it to remind them and/or make sure you're getting the full amount back.
6. ARC Card
You need to return your ARC to the Immigration Office (though people may have different experiences, it’s something we are instructed to do). You can return it one of two ways: Drop it off at the immigration office and get a receipt (you’ll need the receipt to show the airline/ immigration when you leave the country). You can also give the card to the airport immigration officer when you leave the country (usually the customs agent).
7. Final Gas/Electric Bills
You need to contact the gas and electric company on the day you leave to pay your final bills. You can pay over the phone or they can send an agent to your apartment and you can pay in cash.If you are using school provided housing, another option is to find out how much needs is owed and leave the appropriate amount in cash with the school administrator.

Update
billing
addresses
11. Update billing addresses
If you’ve given any company your Korean address, make sure to update it before you go.
12. Closing Bank Account
This one is up to you. Some people leave their accounts open and some choose to close them. Some people may also opt to arrange an automatic transfer plan with their Korean bank account and their home bank account.
13. Giving Goodbye Gifts
This is merely a suggestion, but it is a great way to leave a lasting impression on your coworkers and thank them for all their support. If you need some ideas ideas: go for coffee with your coteacher(s) and pay for a round, purchase snacks to share with the office. Handwritten cards are also a nice way to show your appreciation.
14. Obtaining Letters of Recommendation
These need to come from your school, NOT the DMOE. Many people have trouble getting letters after leaving Korea. Make sure to get these before you go.

Japan A Journey to See the Famous Snow Monkeys
• Written and photographed by Alex Johnson Translated by Suh Ji Yeon
Journey outside of Nagano to see Japan’s famous snow monkeys and experience the quaint rural town of Obuse. While there are many monkey parks in Japan, Jigokudani is famous for the hot spring soaking monkeys. JigokudaniMonkey Park is located about an hour outside of Nagano. The small town of Yudanaka is where most tourists start their trip to the park. Yudanaka is a bit off the regular tourist routes but quite accessible by rail. From Tokyo, the journey is about two and half hours to Nagano and another 50 minutes to Yudanaka. From Nagano Station you need to transfer to the private Nagano Dentestsu Railway- (JR passes are not accepted). For train buffs, there are three types of trains to Yudanaka: the local, rapid and panoramic window train. It is worth the wait to take the panoramic window train and queue for the coveted front seats.

The Monkey Park is located a short bus ride from Yudanaka station and then about a 30 minute walk into the valley. During the winter, there is a lot of snow in the park sovisitorsshould prepare for these conditions. Themonkeys areby no means wild but they were the highlight of our trip to Japan. Do not expect pristine natural viewing of these animals; however, the valley into the monkey park is beautiful. You can expect a lot people snapping photos and viewing the monkeys, but you can get within inches of them with your camera to take photos. We spent an hour or so taking pictures and watching the monkeys relaxing in the hot water. After seeing the monkeys, it is highly recommend having a snack at the café near the bus stop / parking area. The café had the best-baked sweet potatoes! There is also a warm fireplace to help shake off the cold. We stayed the night in Yudanaka, which is famous for hot spas. While the town has many small spas you can visit, we found the sauna/spa at our inn to be adequate. There is also a free hot spring footbath at the train station. There is not much to do in Yudanaka but it was nice to spend some time in a rural Japanese mountain community.

-continued on p40-

Obuse:
On the train to Yudanaka, every seatback has an advertisement for Obuse chestnut desserts and products. My daughter insisted we try these desserts, so Obuse became an unplanned stop. To visit Obuse is very easy and convenient, as it is located between Yudanaka and Nagano. Ourhalf-day stopthere turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Obuseis easy to navigate on foot and almost all the points of interest are located within walking distance of the train station. With our eyes set on finding the chestnut dessert and armed with a photo of the seatback, we wandered around town asking for the famous chestnut dessert café. It was not hard to find, and every person we asked pointed in the same direction. Usually photos of food look much better than they taste; however, this experience was just the opposite.I was skeptical of the light brown looking thing on a small black plate for 550yen but it was wonderful. The sweet chestnut dessert with its creamy texture was complex and delicious. The small town has the feel of an art community. Like many art communities, there are a lot of art galleries and boutiques selling local art and local products. Obuse had a nice comfortable feel and I wish we could have spent more than just a few hours there. We were the only tourists in town on a weekday, but I am sure this is a popular weekend trip for locals and tourist alike.

If you are visiting Nagano, both towns are only a short distance by rail from Nagano Station. Visiting the Snow Monkeyscould be done as a long day trip from Tokyo, but I personally enjoyed spending the extra time to experience the differences betweenthe Japanesecountryside andurban Japan.

A Visit to Guam Winter Fun for All
• Written by Gary Lynn Photos by Gary Lynn and Joyce Merino Translated by Yujeong Lee
I begin my story by telling you that my wife Maria and I went to Guam to enjoy the warmth of the tropics, and get away from the cold here in Daegu. This story will convince you that you need to visit Guam once in your life. We could have stayed at the rooms available at the Naval Base Guam or Andersen AFB at a reasonable rate. You do have to make reservations well in advance. Both offer affordable golf courses and satisfying food courts. There are lavish hotels and luxury resorts on the water in Tumon Bay, however we stayed with our family friend Dr. Dianne M. Strong, to which this story is dedicated.

A Visit to Guam
Dianne has been on Guam for decades and knows the island very well. She has written “Witness to War: Truk Lagoon’s Master Diver Kimiuo Aisek” and is currently working on her second book. We have stayed with Dianne on several trips to Guam. She has introduced us to so many amazing people. This trip was no different.

We met a great group of divers from the top two dive shops on the island, MDA Piti Headquarters (North Marine Corps Dr. 856 1, Piti, 96915, Guam / info@mdaguam.com) and Axe Murderers (163 E. Marine Corps Dr. Hagatna, Guam 96910 / 671-654-2933). Last year my wife and son completed the dive certification course and I received my advanced open water certification with MDA, in less than a week, and for $199 and it includes a free boat dive. Other boat dives range from $25 to $50. 바로 MDA Piti Headquarters(주소 : North Marine Corps Dr. 856 1, Piti, 96915, Guam / 연락처: info@ mdaguam.com)와 Axe Murderers (주소 : 163 E. Marine Corps Dr. Hagatna, Guam 96910 / 연락처 : 671-654-2933)에 서 온 사람들이었다. Axe Murderers has newer equipment, but MDA is the oldest dive shop on the island. Both offer boat dives and courses throughout the week. Scott Suzuki at Axe Murderers was extremely helpful. Teke Kaminaga is one of Dianne’s friends who became one of mine. He was my dive buddy.

A Visit to Guam
I must give a super thank you to Joyce Merino (jvirginiamerino@gmail.com). Joyce was informative and has lived in Guam her entire life. This beautiful island woman works for MDA and provided me with some awesome underwater photographs of some of the best dive sites on the island: Turtle Rock, American Tanker, Barracuda Rock and the famous Blue Hole. You can see the Blue Hole, on the southwest side of the island, from space. It is one of the most popular dive sites in Guam. Guam is right on the edge of the Marianas Trench, the deepest known part of the world’s oceans.
http://www.daegucompass.com
There is more to Guam than diving, although you would be foolish not to dive. The island offers at least a dozen world class golf courses. There are two courses developed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicholas at the Leo Palace Resort. These courses are beautiful and the resort is astounding. It’s like a little town with a church and a water park right on the lake. I played at the Onward Mangilao Golf Club and thank goodness, they have a military discount. It costs $250 dollars for 18 holes, but was only $80 dollars with the discount. This course has special tees on #11, #12 and #13. #12 is an island hole right next to the jungle. This course is outrageously fun and top of the line. The experience is well worth the expense.

Every Wednesday at the Chamorro Village, there is a Chamorro Village Night Market. There are dancers, food, music and vendors. Every resort on the island brings a shuttle to and from this weekly event. The local food is tasty, the music and dancers are entertaining, and the vendors have all kinds of souvenirs to help you remember your visit. This is the one thing you must see when you come to Guam. I would like to say again, “Thank you Dianne!” You are an awesome woman and a great friend. The two weeks went by so fast. We are looking forward to our next trip to Guam. Gajok
Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road
Kyungpook Uni. Area
Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
