“Quality Makes a Difference!” Pietra (삐에뜨라) is a well-known Italian restaurant in Suseong-gu (수성구) that has moved to a conveniently accessible location in the downtown area! Nestled in the Oriental Medicine neighborhood behind the Hyundai Department store, Pietra’s patrons can now visit more easily. The interior of Pietra has a very modern, clean look. Beautiful classical and jazz music was being played gently through the sound system presenting a perfect background ambiance for conversing with loved ones. 8

There is a screen projector with classic black-and-white movies being played on the wall. So, we got to enjoy a classic talkie starring Charlie Chaplin, while dining on the fresh and flavorful food prepared by Pietra’sChef Kim, Sang-Hwan (김상환). All of Peitra’s dishes are plated to look like pieces of artwork. Chef Kim is very enthusiastic about the looks, as well as the taste of his food. The ciabatta bread that is served to every table is of no exception. The bread is baked twice daily; once in the morning, and once at lunch time. ents that are served at Peitraare of the highest quality, which makes all the different in taste and brings joy to your mouth. The Salmone de Crudo (15,000 won) is a great example of this. Typically, I don’t like raw salmon because of the fishy taste. However, I scarfed down Pietra’s salmon surprising my fellow diners who know how much I don’t like fishy foods. This Picasso-esque plating comes with an orange and citron sauce, green and black olives, grapefruit, oranges, tomato, roasted garlic, and perfectly sliced salmon. It is definitely not like any other salmon that I’ve had in the past. For an appetizer, I suggest trying the Bruscheta (12,000 won).Five crispy bread pieces that are topped with various toppings are arranged on a tree ring platter. The toppings change based on the availability of ingredients, but we got to taste ones with pancetta, raw salmon,ricotta cheese, and various fruits, vegetables, and sauces. These morsels teased my stomach, making me want more. The Spaghetti di Aglio e Olio (14,000 won) is served with juicy roasted garlic, asparagus, broccoli, black and green olives, and slivers of parmesan cheese. The long spaghetti noodles are cooked to perfection and tossed in a delicious olive oil sauce. 10

The Calzone Pizza (18,000 won) is stuffed with large chunks of ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, basil pesto, pancetta, leafy greens, and a little bit of tomato sauce. Then, it’s baked in the oven to the optimum crispiness. A side salad of greens, olives, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper accompanies the calzone on the same plate. As a surprise, we were served the Lasagna (20,000). The serving size is enough for two people to share, alongside another entrée. This rectangular dish has two layers of pasta, with 6 layers of ingredients. Layers of eggplant, cheese, Bolognese sauce, cream sauce, and tomato sauce make this a hearty dish that is worth every won. For the finale to your amazing dining experience, Pietra serves desserts. All desserts are freshly baked daily, so the availability is different each day. They offer Tiramisu (6,000 won), Cheese Cake (6,000 won), and Fresh Chocolate Brownie (7,000 won). We were served the later one. It was heavenly! A fudge brownie with strawberries and a thick, rich chocolate sauce drizzled on top. What more could you ask for!? Pietra also offers a great seven-course menu. You get the soup, appetizer, and salad of the day. Plus, you get

Now, to get there. If you are coming from Banwoldang subway (반월당역), take exit 18 (Hyundai Department Store). Take the escalators to the street level. With Hyundai Department store on your left and Dong-A Department store on your right, follow the alley towards the back of the department store. You will come to a “T” in the road; turn left here. (This is the same street that stems out from the Police Station downtown near the YMCA). You will be on this oriental medicine shop lined street for only a few minutes. and expats alike, so prepare to wait for a seat inside the dimly-lit restaurant. The wait time on a Thursday night around 8:30 was about 25 minutes. 하지만 명심하길. 빈플러스는 한국인과 외국인들에게 유명 한 만남의 장소이니 대기 시간을 예상해야한다. 목요일 저녁 8시 30분의 대기시간은 약 25분정도였다.

However, once seated with a cocktail in hand and French fries on the way, the relaxed setting and Western pop music streaming across the room wormed its way into my hunger-hardened heart. I sampled the Berry Good Cobbler, one flavor in a collection of Slush Beer Cobbler’s made with Bruntys ale. The drink is a sugary confection topped with frozen strawberries, perfect for a girls’ night out, less so for an all-nighter on the town. The alcohol has no impact on the taste, and I was barely buzzed after splitting the drink between two. The Slush Beer Cobblers are definitely big enough for two to four people to enjoy, and are at the pricy end of the spectrum at 12,000 to 13,000 won each. The dessert-y drink won’t appeal to those with an aversion to sweet and sugary drinks, but sweet tooth-afflicted patrons can

For those looking to make a meal out of their visit, the menu offers rice, pasta, and gratin dishes from 12,000 to 14,000 won, but perhaps most exciting on its menu, particularly for expats, are the two deep-dish pizza selections, with options for original and sweet potato at 13,000 and 14,000 each. VinPlus also offers finger food options at 8,000 won such as French fries, cheese fries, Mexican fries and potato cream soup. We ordered French fries, and were impressed by how much they actually serve for the price—the French fries come with a sizeable piece of fried chicken, coconut shrimp, potato wedges, and tortilla chips as well as a sweet chili dip. 이 곳에서 식사를 하고 싶은 사람은 12,000원에서 14,000 원 사이 가격대의 밥, 파스타, 그라탕 메뉴가 있다. 하지만 특히 외국인에게는 가장 흥미로운 메뉴는 13,000원인 오리 지날, 14,000원인 Sweet potato, 이 2가지 종류의 딥디쉬 피자일 것이다. 또한 8,000원에 먹을 수 있는 프렌치 프라 이, 치즈 프렌치 프라이, 멕시칸 프라이, 포테이토 크림 수프 와 같은 핑거푸드도 있다. 우리는 프렌치 프라이를 주문했는 데 가격에 비해 실제로 나오는 양에 놀랐다. 프렌치 프라이 는 스윗칠리 소스뿐만 아니라 꽤 큰 프라이드 치킨, 코코넛 쉬림프, 웨지 포테이토, 또띠아 칩과 함께 나왔다.

Ah, Thailand, the land of smiles. If you ever have a break off from work, I urge you to travel to Thailand and experience the culture. During this past summer vacation, I ventured off to Phuket, Thailand. I would say it was quite an interesting experience, lied next to big tigers, met some lady boys, rode an elephant, and got to see some of the most surreal islands. The military coup didn't really affect the vacation in Phuket. There weren't any curfews in place for foreigners, and people were able to do everything they wanted to. Let me start with zip-lining. If you've been zip-lining at Herb Hillz in Daegu, you will fall in love with the course at the Flying Hanuman Phuket. It's like Herb Hillz on a much much bigger scale. They have three different courses that include about 8-15 different zip lines, sky bridges, and abseils. The course lasted about 2.5 hours and our tour guides made it that much better. They were super helpful with catching us when we landed on platforms and clipping and unclipping our carabineers. You will definitely feel a sense of security on the zip line courses because the tour guides definitely make sure you are safe the whole time. During the course, if you're dare devil enough, the tour guides can accompany

you on your zip line and have you fly like "superman." The guides also are so experienced that you can see them zip line upside down. An added bonus, The Kardashians visited there during their "Thailand Vacation," if that means anything to you. But, definitely, you won't forget this experience, you'll see the amazing views of Phuket as well! Another fun thing you can do is lie next to tigers! A lot of people rumor that these tigers are drugged and treated poorly, but I want to believe they aren't. I saw tigers play fighting, running around in their habitat, so not too convinced that they are drugged. They were fully awake when I visited. Try to go early in the morning, they're quite playful around that time. A trainer enters the habitat with you and makes sure everything is secure for you to sit by the tiger. It can be a little pricey if you want to take pictures with all three sized tigers, but it is definitely an experience you should definitely have. How many people can say they've sat next to a tiger? Their location in Phuket is near Patong Beach, called Tiger Kingdom. For the non-adventurous types, there are many shows that you can see at night time that include a nice Thai meal. The Fantasea Show may have been one of the best shows I've seen in my life. It included traditional Thai dances, intricate costumes, elephants, boars, etc. When you arrive to the show, you enter this mini theme park that has games, rides, shows, restaurants, and shops. You have time to walk around, eat your dinner at the buffet, and then your show will start in about an hour or two. While you wait, you're able to ride on elephants as well. When you enter the theatre, be wary that they do take your cell phones and cameras. They want to keep the show as private as possible. Don't worry, their system is on point and you'll get your stuff back safely. The Fantasea Show is a must see while you're in Phuket!

모험적이지 않은 당신을 위해서는 근사한 태국음식이 포 함된 멋진 저녁 공연들이 많다. 그 곳에서 본 Fantasea Show가 내 생의 최고의 공연 중 하나로 손 꼽힐 것이다. 태국전통무용과 복잡한 의상, 코끼리, 야생돼지를 볼 수 있 다. 쇼를 보러 가면 게임, 놀이기구, 쇼, 음식점, 상점이 모 두 있는 작은 테마파크로 들어가게 된다. 주변을 구경하고 뷔페 저녁을 먹고 코끼리를 타보며 1-2시간을 보낸 뒤 쇼 가 시작 된다. 쇼 의 보안을 위해 극장 입장 시에 카메라와 핸드폰을 수거해간다. 하지만 끝난 후 안전하게 잘 되돌려 받을 수 있으니 걱정하지 않아도 된다. Fantasea Show 는 푸켓에서 반드시 봐야 할 쇼이다.

Lastly, the beaches, the ocean, and the beautiful scenery of Thailand are a must see as well. The Phi Phi Island tour is amongst one of the most popular destinations along with Maya Bay where Leonardo Di Caprio's The Beach was filmed. If you get sea sick easily, be sure to take some medicine before you board these speed boats. The island tours are nice because you get to see clear blue waters, and you can snorkel next to the fish. The views are breathtaking and a sight to -continued on p22-

see. They will drop you off at different islands where you can explore and relax on the beach. You can sip on a beer or a smoothie and lay back in the sand while soaking up some sun. 마지막으로 해변, 바다, 태국의 아름다운 풍경 또한 꼭 봐야 할 것이다. Phi Phi 섬투어는 디카프리오의 영화를 촬영한 Maya Bay와 함께 가장 인기 있는 관광지이다. 만약 뱃멀미 가 있다면 스피드보트를 타기 전 약을 먹도록 하자. 맑고 푸 른 바닷물을 보며 물고기들과 함께 스노쿨링을 할 수 있는 좋은 투어이다. 그 곳의 경관은 숨이 막히도록 아름답다. 여 러 섬들을 둘러보고 해안에서 맥주나 스무디를 마시며 휴식 할 수 있는 좋은 기회이다.

All I can say is that I urge you to travel to different countries while you're in South Korea. Thailand is a great place to see and experience. Just make sure you do your research on Wiki Travel or Trip Advisor before you go, those tips helped me a lot! If there is one item on any expats ‘To Do’ list in Korea, it’s a tour to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). In theory it is an insane concept, and for a number of reasons. The most important being that both Korea’s are technically still at war and the DMZ is the most heavily militarized border in the world! In practice, however, it’s just another tourist attraction and without a doubt one of the most ironic tours you will ever take in Korea (and let’s be honest, there’s quite a few on that list). 만약 어떤 외국인이 한국에서 꼭 해야할 일 하나가 있다면, 그건 바로 DMZ(비무장지대) 투어일 것이다. 이론상 이건 말도 안되는 생각이고 그 이유는 많다. 그 중 가장 중요한 이유는 엄밀히 말하자면 남북은 아직 휴전 상태이고 DMZ 는 세계에서 가장 삼엄한 무장을 한 국경이기 떄문이다. 하 지만 실제로는 이 곳은 단지 어떤 관광명소에 불과하며 장 담하건데, 당신이 한국에서 가 본 여행지 중 가장 아이러니 한 곳일 것이다(사실 이런 여행지가 몇 곳이 있다).

There are a number of companies running a variety of tours to the DMZ and offering everything from half-day to full-day depending on the ‘attractions’ you would like to see. I opted for a full-day tour with one of the

most reputable companies in Korea, Koridoor. From the confirmation email, you can already tell that this is a slightly more serious tour (as it should be, you are going to North Korea after all). But as you start to feel the nerves when reading about the strict dress code (a list of 9 very clear instructions of what NOT to wear, as you could be barred from entering the Joint Security Area) and equally strict instructions about the tour itself, you begin to laugh at the irony of it all. If this really is the ‘most dangerous place on earth’…why in hell are companies taking people there by the busload to go and see it? 함을 느끼는 너는 곧 이 모든 아이러니함에 웃음이 나올 것 이다. 만약 이 곳이 ‘세계에서 가장 위험한 곳’이라면.. 도대 체 왜 여행사들은 사람들을 이 곳에 데려가는 것인가? 더 중 요한 것은, 이 곳에 가려고 지불한 나는 왜 가는 것인가이다.

The tour started at 8 am sharp at Camp Kim USO in Seoul. After checking in and signing the required indemnity form (rumour has it North Korean soldiers can fire at will if they feel threatened…not cool) we were herded onto the bus and soon making our way to the infamous 38th Parallel. For those of you who don’t know, the DMZ is one of the most unusual borders in the world. After three years of conflict in the Korean War, which claimed over three million lives, the Korean Armistice Agreement came into effect. In accordance with the ceasefire, the DMZ serves as a buffer between North Korea and South Korea. It is a de facto border barrier, which cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing along the 38th parallel. The strip of land is about 250 kilometres long, 4 kilometres wide and filled with fencing, mines, military personal and a village on either side. 인을 하고 필요한 배상서약서 (북한군이 위협을 느끼면 도발 할 수 있다는 루머가 있어서이다)를 작성한 후 우리는 버스 를 타고 악명 높은 38선으로 향했다. 38선은 세계에서 가장 특이한 국경이다. 300만명의 목숨을 앗아간 한국전쟁이 있 은지 3년 뒤 휴전협정이 체결 되었다. 휴전으로 인해 DMZ 는 남북한 사이의 완충제 역할을 하고있다. 이는 38도선을 기준으로 사실상 한반도를 반으로 나눈 국경 장벽이다. 이 곳은 울타리, 지뢰, 군인 그리고 양쪽으로 마을이 있는 250 키로미터 길이에 4키로미터 넓이의 토지이다. 좀 이상하게 들리지만 그 이유는 이렇다.

Our first stop for the day was Dorasan Station. It’s the northernmost station of South Korea and situated a mere 700 metres from the south boundary line of the DMZ. This train track once connected North and South Korea up until the railroad service was stopped at the start of the Korean War in 1950. After 52 years it was restored, and reopened in 2002 as a tourist attraction. The station itself is a little eerie and walking in reminded me of the scene in the Langoliers when they enter the deserted airport. The only people inside (apart from us tourists) are a few Korean army personnel (as it lies within the Civilian Control Zone) and the people working -continued on p26-

at the gift shop. The station is very modern and looks similar to every other train station in Korea (apart from the fact that it is absolutely deserted). There is a train that runs from Seoul to Dorasan 4 times a day so tourists can get to the DMZ area, but it is heavily controlled at Imjingang Station where additional procedures are needed. 첫번째로 들린 곳은 도라산역이었다. 남한에서 가장 북쪽 에 있는 역이고 DMZ의 남쪽국경에서 불과 700미터 떨어 진 곳이다. 이 철로는 1950년 한국전쟁이 시작 되기 전까지 남북한을 연결했었다. 그로부터 52년 후 복원이 되어 2002 년, 관광지로 다시 오픈되었다. 그 역은 조금 으스스하고 걷 다보니 괴물 랭골리어가 휑한 공항에 들어가는 장면이 생 각 났다. 다른 관광객들과는 떨어져서 역 안에는 나와 몇몇 군인들과(문관통제지대에 있기 때문에) 기념품샵에서 일하 는 직원들 뿐이었다. 그 역은 모던하고 한국의 다른 기차역 과 비슷해보였다(인적이 드물다는 것만 빼면). We bought a ‘train ticket’ (basically a souvenir) from the gift shop so that we could go out on the tracks and have a look. Again, it’s eerie. You are waiting for the silence to be broken by an oncoming train but it never happens. Everyone speaks in hush tones while quietly moving about the platform taking pictures of empty tracks and uniformed ROK soldiers. The sign beside the track is a sharp reminder of how close you are to the border and Capital City of North Korea, indicating Pyeongyang as only 205 kilometres away with Seoul 56 kilometres in the other direction. When standing on the tracks, you can’t help but think of how the station looked in the 1940s, and what it was like to live in the Korean peninsula when it was united? Imagine that happening again and the possibilities this station could bring for travel? Imagine getting on a train in Seoul and being able to travel directly to China or Siberia? Imagine. 우리는 그 기차역을 벗어나 구경을 하기위해 기념품샵에서 기념품인 기차표를 샀다. 역시나 으스스하다. 기차가 들어 오는 소리가 이 적막함을 깨길 바라지만 그런 일은 일어나지 않는다. 빈 기찻길과 군복을 입은 남한군인들의 사진을 찍기 위해 조용히 움직이는 사람들 모두가 작은 목소리로 이야기 했다. 기찻길 옆 간판은 이 곳이 평양에서 205키로미터 거 리이고 반대 방향으로는 서울까지 56키로라고 써져 있어 북 한의 수도와 얼마나 가까이 있는지 확실히 상기시켰다. 기 찻길에 서있으면 1940년대의 기차역이 어떻게 생겼었는지, 한반도가 통일이 되면 어떨지 생각하게 된다. 이 기차역이 진짜 여행을 위해 다시 사용될 가능성을 상상해보라. 중국 이나 시베리아로 여행 가기 위해 서울에서 기차를 타고 바 로 간다고 상상해보라.

After Dorasan, it was time for a quick briefing at Camp Bonifas. It’s essentially a video telling the history of the Korean War and how the DMZ came into being. It also highlights the spots we would be visiting and the history surrounding various incidences between soldiers from the North and South. Factually, it is quite informative, but at the same time it almost has a slight feel of propaganda to it. After the presentation, it was time to go to the most popular stop on the tour – the Joint Security Area. 도라산 이후 캠프 보니파스에서 짧은 브리핑이 있었다. 이 는 한국전쟁의 역사와 DMZ가 어떻게 생기게 됐지는에 대 한 비디오였다. 또한 우리가 방문할 곳과 남북한군인 사이의 여러 사고를 둘러 싼 역사를 보여주었다. 사실 이는 꽤 유익 했지만 약간은 선전같기도 했다. 브리핑 후 투어의 가장 중 요한 관광지인 JSA로 갈 시간이 되었다.

This is where the tension kicked in as our army escorts got even more serious than usual and conveyed strict instructions on what NOT to do once we exited the bus. On the way there,the army escorts pointed out various points of interest such as mine fields, explosive laced roads, observation towers and the entrance to Freedom Village. When we arrived at Freedom House, we had to form two single file lines, which we would walk in for the remainder of our time there. Walking out into the 800 meter diameter area between North and South Korea was rather surreal. This small area is outside of any administrative control by both sides and the only thing separating the two countries is literally a small concrete slab about 10centimetres wide. I found that incredibly ironic considering how militarised the rest of the area was with its high fencing, 12 guard posts and 35 security guards stationed on each side. 그 곳에 가니 우리는 에스코트하는 군인들이 더 심각해졌고, 버스에서 내린 뒤 절대 해서는 안될 엄격한 규율을 듣게 되 어 긴장이 되기 시작했다. 그 곳에 가는 길에 우리는 지뢰밭, 폭발물이 있는 도로, 관측소, 자유의 마을 입구 등 여러 곳을 보았다. 자유의 집에 도착했을 때부터 우리는 두개의 1렬종 대로 걸어가야 했다. 남한과 북한 사이 지름 800미터의 공 간에 걸어 들어가는 것이 꿈만 같았다. 이 작은 공간은 양쪽 나라의 어떠한 행정 구속을 받지 않으며, 두 나라를 나누는 것은 말 그대로 10센치 길이의 작은 콘크리트 판자였다. 높 은 담장, 12개의 경계초소, 양쪽으로 있는 35명의 보안요원 으로 무장된 다른 지역을 생각해보니 이 곳의 풍경은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 아이러니했다.

going through border control. Outside, on the South Korean side, were four ROK soldiers standing dead still facing the soldiers on the North Korean side. They looked intense with their dark sunglasses, fists pulled in a Taekwondo stance ready to attack. Inside the small room of one of the little blue buildings were two more ROK soldiers in the same stance. In the centre of the room is a large conference table that straddles the borderline, so once you cross over it, you can officially say that you are in North Korea. Surprisingly, you are allowed to take photos inside the room as well as with the soldiers (although you have to keep a distance of 40 centimetres) but you can not face your camera towards Freedom House on the South Korean side. JSA에서 가장 아이러니했던 것은 콘크리트 판자가 있는 국경을 가로지르는 작은 파란 건물이다. 이는 두 나라의 미 팅에 사용되는데, 국경 제한을 받지 않고 재빨리 북한으로 다녀올 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 남한쪽 바깥에는 네명의 남 한군이 북한군쪽을 바라보며 꼼짝도 않고 서있다. 까만 선 글라스와 태권도의 공격 준비상태로 꼭 쥔 주먹이 강렬해 보였다. 파란건물 중 한 건물안의 작은 방에는 같은 자세 로 두명의 남한군이 더 있다. 방의 중간에는 국경을 가로 지르는 큰 회의탁자가 있는데, 그 것을 넘어가면 공식적으 로 북한이 있는 것이다. 놀랍게도 그 안에서는 사진을 찍 어도 되고, 40센치의 거리를 유지해야하지만 군인과도 사 진을 찍을 수 있다. 하지만 카메라를 남한 쪽 자유의 집을 향해 사진을 찍으면 안된다.

After we all bundled out of the small room in our single file line, we went to stand outside Freedom House for more pictures. I still find it so odd that we could take as many photos as we like facing North Korea, but we absolutely could not turn around and take any of the Freedom House behind us. Added to that, we were also not allowed to point at anything or anyone (according to a fellow tourist it could result in us getting shot. I’m sorry, what?). Again, amidst all the tension, the guns pointed at each other and the strict rules, I wondered how in the hell both sides sat down and agreed that the DMZ, and more specifically the JSA, would make an excellent tourist destination! 우리가 1렬종대로 그 작은 방을 나온 뒤 자유의 집 앞에 서서 더 많은 사진을 찍었다. 나는 북쪽을 향해서는 사진 을 마음껏 찍어도 되지만 남쪽으로는 찍을 수 없는 것이 아직도 이상하다고 생각한다. 그리고 우리는 어느 것, 어 떤 이에게도 손가락질을 하면 안되는데 우리가 총에 맞을 수도 있기 때문이다. 긴장감 속에 총이 서로를 향해 겨누 어져 있고 엄격한 규율이 있는데 도대체 어떻게 이 두나라 는 DMZ, 즉 JSA가 좋은 관광지가 될 수 있으리라 생각 하는지 궁금했다! -continued on p28-

After the surreal experience of the JSA, we were taken to a high point called Checkpoint 3. From here you can get a panoramic view of the ‘most dangerous place on earth’, with its peaceful tranquility, lush green hillsides and untouched marshlands. Then again, beyond that beauty is the largest concentration of military forces in the world. From the viewpoint we got to look down at where the Axe Murder incident took place, as well as Gijeong-dong Village, more famously known as Propaganda Village to anyone outside of North Korea, and to them (ironically) ‘Peace Village’. 꿈만 같던 JSA를 본 후 우리는 제3검문소라는 곳에 올라갔 다. 이 곳에서는 평화로운 고요함과 우거진 푸른 언덕, 자연 그대로의 습지가 있는 ‘세계에서 가장 위험한 곳’의 전경을 볼 수 있다. 그 아름다움 너머엔 세계에서 가장 큰 병력집중 지대가 있다. 그 곳에서 우리는 대외적으로 북한의 선전용 마을로 알려지고 또 그들에게는 아이러니하게도 ‘평화의 마 을’이라 불리우는 기정동 마을과, 과거에 일어난 도끼 살인 사고 장소를 볼 수 있었다.

Gijeong-dong is one of two villages (the other being Daesong-dong on the South Korean side of the DMZ) that have been allowed to remain inside the 4 kilometre wide DMZ zone. From the viewpoint you can clearly see roads, buildings, apartment blocks and lampposts, however, the one thing you do not see are people. The reason for this, according to our army escort, is that the uninhabited village was built in a propaganda effort to encourage South Koreans to defect over to North Korea. Up until 2004, massive loudspeakers mounted on several of the buildings delivered North Korean propaganda broadcasts directed towards the south. The village on the South Korean side counteracted with their own loudspeaker broadcasts until both sides mutually agreed to end them. What is really interesting is that the buildings you see from a distance are actually just shells that apparently don’t even have real windows, rather they are painted on. There are caretakers who sweep the streets and lights in buildings are turned on at off at set times to give the illusion that there is activity in the village. It’s all rather absurd. However, the most amusing thing for me is the history of the flagpole. 기정동은 DMZ 4미터 반경 내에 남아있도록 허락 된 두개의 마을 중 하나이다(다른 한 곳은 DMZ의 남쪽에 있는 대성동 이다). 검문소 위에서는 그 곳의 도로, 건물, 아파트블럭, 가 로등 기둥을 잘 볼 수 있지만 단 한가지 보지 못하는 것은 사 람이다. 에스코트 군인에 따르면 그 이유는 남한이 북한보 다 못하다는 것을 선전하기 위해 아무도 살지 않는 그 동네 가 생긴 것이다. 2004년까지 몇몇 건물위에 달린 큰 확성기 를 통해 북한선전용 방송이 남한을 향해 흘러나왔다. 남한 쪽 마을도 그들의 확성기 방송기로 대응했지만 후에 서로가

이를 중지하기로 합의했다. 흥미로웠던 것은 멀리서 보이는 북한의 건물들이 색칠만 되어있고 사실상 창문이 없는 껍데 기였다. 경비원이 거리를 청소하고, 마을에서 활동이 일어 나고 있는 듯한 착각을 주기 위해 건물들의 불은 켜져있었 다. 이는 오히려 우스꽝스러웠다. 하지만 가장 재미있는 것 은 깃대의 역사이다.

In the 1980s, the South Korean government built a 98.4 metre tall flagpole with a massive flag of South Korea in Daeseong-dong, also known as Freedom Village. Unlike Gijeong-dong, Daesong-dong has about 230 resident farmers who live there, descendents from families who lived in the area before the Korean War. They abide by strict rules, such as nightly curfews, but also receive preferential treatment including exemption from the mandatory military service. Anyway, back to the 1980s. After the completion of their rather large flagpole with equally large flag, the North Korean government responded by building an even taller one in Gijeong-dong. It is currently the world’s third-tallest flagpole at 160 metres in height and the actual flag is one of the largest in the world weighing 270 kilograms. I guess ‘anything you can do I can do better’ is a real thing! 1980년대 남한정부는 평화의 마을이라 불리우는 대성동에 큰 남한 국기가 걸린 98.4미터의 긴 깃대를 만들었다. 기정 동과는 다르게, 대성동은 약 230명의 농민과 한국전쟁 전에 그 곳에 살았던 사람들이 살고 있다. 그들은 야간통행금지와 같은 엄격한 규율아래 지내지만 군입대 면제 등 혜택을 받 는다. 어쨌거나 1980년대로 돌아간다. 큰 깃발과 깃대를 완 성한 뒤, 북한정부는 기정동에 더 높은 건물을 지었다. 이는 160미터 높이인 깃대는 세계에서 세번째로 높고, 깃발 또 한 270키로 이상 나가는 세계에서 가장 큰 깃발이다. ‘니가 하는 것은 내가 더 잘 할수 있어’라는 말이 정말인 것 같다.

The second to last stop on our tour was Dora Observation Center. On our way there, we were shown two very important landmarks in the DMZ. The first was the Axe Murder memorial. There have been a number of incidences in the DMZ since the Armistice Agreement was put into effect; however, the most tragic and hostile of these has to be the Axe Murder Incident. In 1976 a group of United Nations personnel attempted to trim the branches of a poplar tree in the JSA area, near the Bridge of No Return, that was obstructing the view of their UN Command Post (Checkpoint 3). There had been numerous attempts by the North Korean army to grab United Nations Command personnel from Checkpoint 3 and drag them across the bridge into North Korea. By trimming the tree the UNC personnel would be able to have a clear view of Checkpoint 3 again. Whilst trimming the tree North Korean soldiers attempted to

block the operation and then attacked the UN personnel with axes killing Captain Arthur G. Bonifas, Lieutenant Mark T. Barrett and 4 Korean soldiers. Many other US soldiers were also wounded. Today there is a memorial in the exact spot where the tree once stood. 마지막으로 들린 곳은 도라전망센터이다. 그 곳으로 가는 길에 DMZ의 랜드마크를 보았다. 첫번째는 도끼살인 기념 비이다. 휴전협약 이루어진 후 DMZ에 많은 사고가 있었 다. 하지만 가장 비극적이고 적대적인 사고는 도끼살인사 건이다. 1976년, UN의 직원한 명이 UN 본부 (제3검문소) 의 시야를 가리던 돌아올 수 없는 다리 근처 JSA지역의 포 플러 나무 가지를 잘랐다. 그 전에도 남한이 UN 본부 직원 을 붙잡아 북한으로 끌고 오려는 시도가 있었다. 그 직원 이 나뭇가지를 자르면 제 3검문소에서 시야가 잘 보였을 것 이다. 나뭇가지를 자르는 사이에 북한은 작전을 가로막은 뒤 도끼로 UN 직원을 공격했다. 이로 Arthur G. Bonifas, Lieutenant Mark T. Barrett 대위와 4명의 남한군이 목숨 을 잃었다. 다른 많은 미군들도 부상을 입었다. 옛날 나무가 있던 바로 그 자리에 오늘날 기념비가 있다.

The other important landmark we saw was the Bridge of No Return. It is heartbreaking to imagine the scenes that took place here after the war. The cement block bridge runs astride the Military Demarcation Line and after the

Armistice Agreement in 1953, prisoners of war from both sides were exchanged over this bridge. The name came from the fact that POW who chose to go back to North Korea instead of staying in the South would never be able to return. This has led to many families being split over the two Korea’s and subsequently to the reunions both countries have agreed to in the past. There is a long list of people waiting to see their families again, some who have been apart for over 60 years. It is a harsh reality and an incredibly painful process that many Koreans still have to endure so many years after the war. 다른 주요 방문지는 ‘돌아오지 못하는 다리’이다. 전쟁 직후 이 곳에서 일어났을 일을 상상하면 가슴이 아프다. 시멘트로 막힌 이 다리는 1953년 휴전협정 이후로 군사분계선을 경 계로 양쪽으로 나눠졌다. 이 다리의 이름은 남한에서 북한으 로 가고자하는 전쟁포로는 다시는 남한으로 돌아올 수 없음 에 지어졌다. 이 다리는 두 한국을 사이로 많은 가족을 갈라 놓았고 그 후에는 상호 협의하에 재회도 이루어진 곳이다. 가족들을 다시보려는 사람들은 굉장히 많고 그 중에는 그들 과 60년 이상 떨어져 산 사람들도 있다. 전쟁 후에 오랜 시 간동안 기다려야했던 한국인들에게 이는 냉혹한 현실이고 정말 고통스러운 과정이다. -continued on p30-

Before I could dwell any further on the harsh realities of war, we had arrived at Dora Observation Centre. There’s not much to do here except look over at North Korea and Propaganda Village. It’s a very high vantage point and there are binoculars to get a better view of the North, but it was the same views you got from Checkpoint 3. What I did notice this time was that even though the border wasn’t indicated by large electric, barbed wire fencing (like most other countries) it was clearly visible by the landscape. On the South Korean side,there are plenty trees and shrubbery, a lush landscape. On the North however, there is nothing. No trees, no bushes, just barren landscape. My guess is that they are making it impossible for any North Koreans to try to run over the border as there is absolutely nowhere for them to hide. 전쟁의 냉혹한 현실을 더 알기 전에 위는 도라산 전망센터 에 도착했다. 이 곳에서는 북한의 선전용 마을을 보는 것 외 에는 할 것이 없다. 이 곳은 위치가 좋고 육안으로 북한을 잘 볼 수 있는 곳이지만 제3검문소에서 보이는 풍경과 거의 같 았다. 큰 전기나 다른 나른 나라에서 볼 수 있는 줄로 쳐진 울 타리로 국경이 구분되진 않지만 풍경만으로 확연히 구분되 는 것을 알 수 있다. 남한쪽에는 많은 나무와 관목숲, 우거진 풍경을 볼 수 있다. 하지만 북한쪽은 아무것도 없다. 나무도 없고, 관목도 없고, 황량한 풍경이다. 내 추측은 북한 사람이 국경을 넘어 도망치려 할 때 숨을 곳이 없게 하려는 것이다.

Our last stop for the day was the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel. Before heading down into the tunnel we were shown another movie on the history of the tunnels and the DMZ. It was the weirdest thing I have ever watched with the end sounding more like a National Geographic episode on how great the wildlife is in the peaceful marshlands of the DMZ. My brain was so confused trying to comprehend what exactly the DMZ was? Was this the most dangerous place on earth or one of the most popular tourist destinations in Korea? It made no sense for me for it to be both, but yet it was. 다음 방문지는 제3땅굴이다. 터널로 내려가기 전에 터널과 DMZ의 역사에 관한 영화를 봤다. DMZ의 평화로운 습지에 얼마나 많은 야생생물들이 사는지에 대한 네셔널지오그래픽 방송 같은 이 영상은 내가 본 것 중 가장 이상한 것이었다. DMZ가 무엇인지 이해하는게 너무 혼란 스러웠다. 이 곳은 세계에서 가장 위험한 곳인가, 아니면 한 국의 가장 인기 있는 관광지인가? 나에겐 이 두가지 모두 말 이 되지 않는 것이지만, 사실은 그렇다.

My frustrations over my mixed feelings towards the whole tour were quickly put on hold as we were escorted towards the entrance to the 3rd tunnel. The tunnel was discovered by Korean forces in 1978 and spans over 1.6 kilometres in length and is 2 metres high and 2 30

metres wide. It is one of 4 tunnels that have so far been discovered, even though there are believed to be up to 20 more. The tunnel is said to easily accommodate about 30 000 men per hour, along with light weaponry, which is why South Korea believe it was designed to be used for a surprise attack on Seoul by North Korea. At the entrance, everyone is given a hard hat and all possessions are to be put into lockers. Photos are forbidden within the tunnel, which is heavily guarded, but ironically still used as a busy tourist site. Due to my claustrophobia, I could only make it half way down the 73 metre descent before turning around. Tourists can walk as far as the Military Demarcation Line, which has been blocked off by concrete barricades. 전반적인 투어에 대한 복합적인 감정과 혼돈은 제3땅굴로 에스코트 되며 잠시 사그라 들었다. 이 터널은 1978년 남한 에 의해 발견 되었고 1.6키로 길이에 2미터 높이, 2미터 폭 이다. 이는 현재까지 발견 된 4개의 땅굴 중 하나이고 약 20 개 이상 더 있을 것으로 추정된다. 이 터널은 한시간 동안 가 벼운 무기를 든 30,000명의 인원을 충분히 수용할 수 있는 크기라 남한은 북한이 이 곳을 서울을 갑자기 공격하기 위해 만들었다고 생각한다. 입구에서 사람들은 딱딱한 모자를 받 고 소지품은 락커에 보관한다. 땅굴 안에서는 사진을 찍지 못하도록 업격히 감시 되지만, 아이러니하게도 아직도 사람 들이 여전히 많이 찾는 관광지이다. 나는 밀실공포증 떄문에 73미터정도 아래로 내려갔다 되돌아 나왔다. 관광객은 콘크 리트 벽으로 막힌 군사경계선까지 들어갈 수 있다.

While my friends were in the tunnel, I sat outside the gift shop eating an ice-cream and observing the amount of tourists coming in and out of the area. It had been a strange day for me and not at all what I was expecting from the DMZ. I enjoyed learning more about the Korean War and how the Armistice Agreement came into being (even if it was completely one-sided), as I was rather clueless before, but I’m still not certain if I like the fact that the area is being used so extensively as a tourist attraction. I know it’s rather hypocritical of me to say that after I’ve been there myself as a tourist but that’s my point. I enjoyed this tour like it was an amusement park. I ate ice cream and did stupid poses with statues and monuments. I took ‘selfies’ with soldiers, bought fake train tickets and grinned like a Cheshire cat in photos of me ‘in’ North Korea. Surely it shouldn’t be like that? This is the DMZ, the most heavily militarised border in the entire world, a place of extreme tension between two countries that are technically still at war with each other, and supposedly the most dangerous place in the world! And here I am buying cute fridge magnets at the gift shop on the way out…

내 친구들이 터널 안에 있을 때 나는 밖에서 아이스크림을 먹으며 수많은 관광객들이 오는 모습을 보았다. 이 하루는 내가 DMZ에 대해 기대했던 것과는 많이 달라 나에게 참 이 상한 하루였다. 이 전에는 전혀 몰랐던 한국전쟁과 휴전협 정이 이루어지게 된 것에 대해 배우게 되어 즐거웠지만 이 곳이 관광지로 널리 쓰인다는 사실이 좋은지는 잘 모르겠 다. 비록 나도 이 곳에 관광을 하고 온 것이 위선적이긴 하지 만 내 생각은 그렇다. 놀이공원에 간 것 마냥 이 투어를 즐 겼다. 아이스크림을 먹고 기념동상과 기념물 앞에서 우스꽝 스러운 포즈를 취하기도 했다. 사진을 찍으며 나는 ‘북한에 서’ 군인들과 셀카를 찍고 가짜 기차표를 사고 공연히 웃기 도 했다. 확실히 원래는 그래서는 안되는 것 아닌가? 전 세 계에서 가장 삼엄한 무장지대인 DMZ는 휴전상태에 있는 두 나라간의 극도의 긴장감이 있는 곳이고 가장 위험한 곳 이다! 그리고 여기서 나가는 길에 나는 귀여운 냉장고 자석 을 사고 있다.

Even the hottest city in the summer in South Korea, Daegu, gets very cold during the winter season. These days for families, it is a good idea to find places to go to that are inside and warm. 한국에서 여름에 가장 더운 도시 대구라고 하더라도 겨울에 는 무진장 춥기 마련이다. 요즘 같은 때 가족 나들이객들에 겐 따뜻한 실내를 찾는 것이 좋다.

A good place for the family is a place that you can interact with different types of animals. Usually when you interact with animals, you do it outside like at the Dalseong Park Zoo or HerbHillz. But near Daegu World Cup Stadium, there is a place where you can interact with animals and it is inside where it is warm (sometimes too warm). 32

There are also a lot of coffee shops, dessert places, small restaurants and entertainment like CGV cinemas and a couple arcade rooms. But on the basement floor where CGV is located, there is a kids’ theme park called Pinocchio Village. In this theme park, kids can build blocks, race remote racing cars, play video games and take many pictures. 커피숍, 디저트 카페, 음식점, CGV 영화관과 오락실같은 즐길 거리도 있다. 하지만 CGV가 있는 지하층에는 피노키 오 빌리지라고 하는 어린이 테마 파크가 있다. 이 곳에서 는 아이들이 블록쌓기를 할 수 있고 무선 자동차를 조종하 고, 비디오 게임도 하고 사진을 찍을 수도 있다.

There is a small village within the village too. This village is called Daegu Zoo Village. It is a small inside petting zoo and aquarium. As I entered this small village, I first saw some reptiles like iguanas, lizards, and snakes. 테마 파크 안에 또 다른 작은 마을이 있다. 이 마을은 대구 동물원 빌리지라고 하며 작은 실내 동물원과 수족관이다. 이 작은 빌리지 안에 들어서자 제일 처음 이구아나, 도마 뱀, 뱀과 같은 파충류가 눈에 띄었다.

This village gives families a chance to interact and touch different animals. Trainers are there to help you understand more about the animals. The trainers love to give you a chance to touch and feel the animals like snakes and other reptiles. As I saw first entered and saw the reptiles, I saw a trainer holding a couple different snakes (one which was a king snake) and both adults and children were touching and feeling the smooth, silky skin of these snakes. I don't like snakes, so I kind of stayed away. As I continued, trainers were holding different animals for adults and children to pet including a chipmunk and a huge white raccoon. 이 곳은 가족들에게 다양한 동물을 접하고 만질 수 있는 기 회를 제공해준다. 조련사들은 동물들에 대해 더 알 수 있 도록 도와준다. 그리고 뱀과 다른 파충류 같은 동물들을 만지고 느낄 수 있는 기회를 주는 것을 좋아한다. 처음 들 어가서 파충류들을 봤을 때, 한 조련사가 몇몇 종류의 뱀( 그 중 하나는 킹스네이크였다)을 들고 있고 어른들과 아이 들이 뱀의 부드럽고 비단 같은 피부를 만지며 느끼는 것을 보았다. 필자는 뱀을 좋아하지 않아서 멀찍이 떨어져 있었 다. 계속 그렇게 있었고, 다른 조련사는 어른들과 아이들 -continued on p34-

When you pay for tickets for the village zoo, you get free tickets to feed parakeets. So as I continued through the village, there is a caged area that holds many different parakeets. I believe this is the most popular place in the village. It was very crowded for adults and children getting first-hand interaction with these parakeets as they fed them right from their hands. The parakeets then would fly onto your arm and eat the food out of your hand. Outside of the cage, in another popular spot, was a place to interact with rabbits and turtles. Sometimes you can see the turtles just wondering around the village enjoying his/her space. You can pet the rabbits and touch the turtles shell (don't touch their head, they might bite). There are also prairie dogs you can touch with the help of a trainer. There is also a small aquarium where I saw different types of fish, sea turtles and small sharks swimming in their tanks. Also after you buy tickets, you get a free ticket to get a free drink (mostly tea or juice) from their small cafe they have. It is a nice place to rest and it has 2 floors with the second floor having an overview of the village. 수조에서 헤엄을 치는 다양한 종류의 물고기, 바다 거북이 작은 상어를 보았던 작은 수족관도 있다. 표를 사고 나면 수족관에 딸린 작은 카페에서 사용 가능한 무료 음료(차 혹 은 주스) 쿠폰을 준다. 카페는 휴식을 취하는 데도 좋고, 빌 리지를 한 눈에 내려다 볼 수 있는 2층도 있다.

The trainers also give you some education about each of the animals at the village as you enjoy petting them or touching them. It is a very good place for children especially to interact with different animals that they may not normally get the chance to meet and learn a little bit more about them. 조련사는 빌리지에 있는 동물을 쓰다듬고 만질 때에 각각 의 동물에 대해 가르쳐 준다. 아이들에게 특히 쉽게 보지 못하는 다양한 동물을 접하고 동물에 대해 배우기에 아주 좋은 장소이다.

The ticket prices are 10,000w for 2 hours for children and 8,000w for adults. But I was able to get almost 50 percent discount on tickets by using Coupang application. This winter season might be one of the coldest winter seasons Korea has had in a long time, so to keep yourself warm and still have a good time with the family, the Daegu Zoo Village is a great place to go. The Daegu Compass had the pleasure to talk with Violet Her about Seoul’s newest and hottest event promotion company Fake Virgin. Her is no stranger to the event promotion scene, so it comes at no surprise that Fake Virgin has already had a lot of success with bringing in indie rock bands. Recently CHVRCHES and DARKSIDE came to Seoul and played out to a packed house. Her also has a caring side and has set up an online charity shop where fans can purchase t-shirts and show memorabilia. The profits from this store are donated to single mom’s shelter 'Open House'. Although no plans to bring shows down to Daegu yet, for those of us in Daegu who miss seeing live shows of your favorite indie bands back home, Seoul is just a 2 hours KTX ride away. Compass: What's the story behind the company name, Fake Virgin and what has been the most challenging moments for your new company? Her: I wanted a very intuitive & strong name. It's been growing up pretty fast and I'm satisfied with last 6 months but if I have to choose the most challenging moment that'll be CHVRCHES. The co-promoter backed out 3 weeks ahead of the show. This is the reason I had to move the date and venue. It was such a hassle for the audience and artists, but we made it work eventually. Thanks to the staff of FAKE VIRGIN who worked hard to deal with this and thanks to the fans and artists who understood our situation. Compass: How has the reception been so far, do you think Korea wants/needs indie bands from around the globe to come to Seoul? Her: Yes. The need for international. acts has been growing for the last several years and the focus is going to gradually move from 'WHO is coming' to 'WHO is bringing them over'.

Compass: Why did you choose to promote indie rock bands in Korea? Her: People want various physical and cultural experiences to keep up with their virtual lives on the Internet. It's all about lifestyles. Music industry takes big part of making certain types of lifestyles. To make the story shorter, I was bored so I started something exciting. Compass: What is the future of Fake Virgin? Do you feel that Fake Virgin can go beyond Korea? Her: FV launched 6 months ago and so many good things happened. No one knows what's going to happen in the next 6 months, 6 years. I still like sharing the energetic moments with music fans so probably FV keeps doing concerts and parties. “Some magicians have stage shows, like performance magic, but that’s just visual. It’s not fun. But David Blaine’s style is on the street and direct. I really liked that about him,” Jo says, as he cascades a full deck of cards from hand to hand. Jo says that his interest in magic spawned from his childhood. As his peers were all concerned with the same studies and interests and lifestyles, he found the routine somewhat boring. Magic, however, was a unique skill he could develop to set himself apart from the daily grind of the student lifestyle. “어떤 마술사들은 무대에서 쇼를 해요, 퍼포먼스 마술 같 은 걸요. 하지만 그건 그냥 시각적인 거예요. 재미가 없죠. 하지만 데이빗 블레인의 스타일은 거리에서 하는 것이고 직접적이에요. 전 그의 그런 점이 정말 좋아요.” 조씨는 카 드의 덱 전체를 한 손에서 다른 손으로 캐스캐이딩을 하며 이렇게 대답했다. 그의 마술에 대한 관심은 어린 시절부터 시작되었다고 한다. 친구들이 똑같이 공부와 관심사, 생활 방식에 집중하고 있을 때, 그는 그런 판에 박힌 스타일이 지루했다. 그러나 마술은 매일 틀에 짜인 학생의 생활에서 벗어날 수 있게 해주는 독특한 기술이었다.

Jo operates his magic out of Magic Town, a nifty little illusion shop tucked away in between the fashion boutiques and small photo studios of Banwoldang Station’s underground shopping mall. The shop sells the normal selection of magic tricks: cards, coins, scarves, wands, cups and balls, metal rings, large effects, small effects, as well as a collection of books from which to study and better understand the craft of magic. Magic Town is staffed with a talented collective of local magicians who will woo and wow you with in-store presentations.

조씨는 매직타운 밖에서도 마술을 펼친다. 매직 타운은 반 월당 지하상가의 옷가게와 작은 사진부스 사이에 끼인 작고 실용적인 그의 마술가게이다. 가게에서는 마술공부를 하거 나 마술기구에 대해 이해할 수 있는 책뿐만 아니라 카드나 동전, 스카프, 지팡이, 컵과 공, 금속고리, 크고 작은 물품 등 등 마술에 필요한 평범한 물품들을 구입할 수 있다. 매직 타 운에서는 가게 내에서의 공연으로 손님을 놀라게 해줄 재능 있는 지역 마술사들이 일하고 있다.

Magic Town also offers classes, one-on-one lessons in the art of magic, which goes beyond just fancy card maneuvers. As Jo explains: “Sleight of hand is just sleight of hand. I think magic is more showmanship and patter. But, I don’t say ‘patter.’ I say ‘sleight of mouth.’” Jo says that students tend to be a mix of locals, some students, some adults, some with a budding interest in magic, others wanting to better craft their existing skills. The street magic scene in Daegu is a unique one, in that the approach Jo uses to Koreans vs. non-Koreans differs greatly. “If approached by an unknown person, Koreans will often ask: ‘Oh, who are you?’” This means that Jo needs to more formally ask permission to perform for his own countrymen while on the street. “But, it’s really simple with foreigners. It’s as simple as saying: ‘Do you like card tricks?’” Without waiting for an answer, he will often go into his routine. 대구의 거리 마술공연은 매우 독특하다. 조씨가 한국인과 한 국인이 아닌 사람들에게 다가가는 방법은 매우 다르다. “만 약 낯선 사람이 다가가면, 한국인들은 보통 ‘누구냐?’라고 물어봐요.” 즉, 조씨가 길에서 공연을 할 수 있도록 더 예의 를 차려 허락을 구해야 한다. “하지만 외국인들과의 소통은 매우 단순해요. ‘카드마술 좋아하세요?’라고 말하는 것 만큼 이나 단순하죠.” 조씨는 대답을 기다릴 필요도 없이 바로 마 술을 펼쳐보인다.

It’s clean and simple, and has a great twist at the end. “My magic concepts are basically mathematical,” he says referring to his own brand of legerdemain, “but...impossible mathematics.” 조씨는 그만의 기술과 효과 역시 개발해왔다. 그리고 여전 히 그가 만들어낸 바로 그 첫번째 마술을 펼쳐보이는데 단 순히 “8-2”라고 부른다. 그 마술은 깔끔하고 단순하며 마 지막에 큰 반전이 있다. “제 마술의 개념은 기본적으로 수 학적이에요.” 조씨는 그만의 마술 브랜드를 언급하며 말해 주었다. “하지만 불가능한 수학이죠”

In addition to providing one-on-one lessons in either English or Korean, Jo can also be booked for parties or festivals. Get Your KPOP Fix Stompy Ruffers Cultural Fusion

For the past year, my Daegu-based group, Stompy Ruffers Cultural Fusion, has been slowly building a catalogue of short, humorous films depicting non-Koreans interacting in Korean society through a host of ways. 대구에서 시작한 Stompy Ruffers는 여러 국적의 사람들 이 한국사회에서 적응하는 과정을 짧지만 유쾌한 비디오로 풀어내는 등 여러 방법으로 문화 교류 프로그램을 기획하 는 단체입니다.

Our films have shown a love story-chase through the city (The Chase), a boy who mistakenly breaks law after law (The Deported), ajummas playing Twister in a park (Ajumma Twister) as well as others. This fall, Stompy Ruffers has completed its most ambitious short film project: KPOP Junkie. 현재까지 제작한 비디오를 들자면, 도시에서 일어난 러브스 토리를 다룬 “The Chase”, 자신의 의지와 상관없이 한국의 법과 사투를 벌이는 소년 “The Deported”, 한국의 아주머 니가 이젠 트위스터 게임에 도전하는 “Ajumma Twister”

The 5-minute film tells the story of a foreign man who falls in love with KPOP and karaoke rooms, becomes addicted to them, squanders all of his money, becomes homeless, and then has a very elaborate dream where he is the star of his own obsessive KPOP fantasy. It’s certainly an over-the-top concept, but one well worth exploring. 총 5분 남짓한 이 영상은 KPOP과 노래방에 빠진 외국인 남성이 자신의 모든 돈을 다 써버리고 길거리에 나앉게 되 나 자신이 염원하던 KPOP 스타에 대한 환상을 꿈에서는 이루게 된다는 내용으로 구성되어 있습니다. 상식을 벗어 난 주제라고 생각할 수 있겠지만, 해볼 만한 도전이었다고 생각합니다.

To make this film, our crew spent 4 consecutive weekends filming, using locales around town familiar to all. There’s 228 park downtown, as well as Jungangro station, and even a few shots from Daegu’s vintage clothing row near Daegu Station. The biggest challenge, however, was filming the fantasy dream: a sequence requiring an elaborate set, costumes, dancers, and crew. 4주 동안 주말마다 영상제작을 위해 2.28 공원, 중앙로역 그 리고 대구역 근처 구제 의류 가게거리 등 이곳저곳을 누볐 습니다. 그러나 오랜 시간의 촬영보다 더 큰 도전은 꿈속 장 면을 재현하는 것이었습니다. 의상부터 댄스팀, 그리고 출 연자 등 세심하게 하나하나를 신경 써야 했기 때문입니다.

The first step was to secure the studio. We first combed through various wedding studios online before settling on a particular set we liked at Rainbow Studios (behind Novotel). After booking a 2-hour filming session there, we then selected a tuxedo for our homeless hero at J Jin Tuxedo, located behind the Hwanggeum Home Plus in SuSeong-Gu.

꿈속 장면을 재현하기 위한 첫 단계는 알맞은 스튜디오를 확보하는 것이었습니다. 우선 인터넷을 통해 여러 웨딩스 튜디오를 샅샅이 조사한 후, 촬영 분위기에 적합한 레인보 우 스튜디오(노보텔 뒤편)를 선정하였습니다. 2시간의 스튜 디오 예약을 마친 후, 꿈꾸는 노숙자에게 잘 어울리는 턱시 도(J Jin Tuxedo, 수성구 황금동 홈플러스 뒤편)를 선정하 였습니다.

Our next step was to find a 4-member dance team who could train and provide a suitable dance for us. We came into contact with ZEST Dance Team of Daegu and spent about 3 weeks training at their rehearsal studio near the Prince Hotel in Nam-Gu. The eve of our big shoot, all cast members met together for a few final run-throughs. 다음, 우리에게 알맞은 안무를 제공할 4명의 댄서를 찾는 것 이었습니다. 인터넷, 오프라인 등으로 우리와 함께할 팀을 찾아다녔고, 그 결과, 대구 ZEST 댄스팀과 함께하게 되었습 니다. 프린스 호텔 근처의 연습실에서 3주간 열심히 연습했 고, 실제 촬영 전날에는 모든 출연진이 함께하여 마지막 안 무를 맞춰보는 시간을 가졌습니다.

Finally, the day had arrived and we all descended upon Rainbow Studios.Normally, the studio doesn’t offer its sets for projects like ours, but they seemed to find the opportunity unique enough to give it a shot. Tell us about what happened at the last event and a little about Daegu Wine Club? Following on from the 7th wine party, which was held at Buy the Book CafĂŠ on the 25th of October 2014, Daegu Wine Club recently hosted its 8th bottomless wine club party, this time with a Salsa twist! And what an incredible evening it turned out to be. It was held at Babalu Salsa Bar, and we gave our guests an opportunity to come dance salsa (which was a free complementary lesson). Since the 7th party saw over 100 people attend, we decided to go ahead and organise another party. We were impressed and happy to see such a vibrant wine community that existed within Daegu. So at the 8th wine party, we opted to hire a magician (again) who 46

performed his tricks on the fly as our guests enjoyed their wine. Additionally, we also decided to run a free raffle prize give away in addition to the free salsa lesson. Our events focus on opportunities for our guests to mingle and expand their current network. We have members from the military, teachers, professors, business people, Korean and international students to name a few. The 8th wine party was no different as we again attracted a diverse group of people. So what wine did you have on offer? We have a direct and exclusive link with a South African winery, known as Barnardt Boyes Wines. These wines are from the Stellenbosch region, about 40km from

Cape Town. The region’s warm, Mediterranean climate ensures fully ripened grapes in most years, which in turn leads to full-bodied wine with relatively high, but soft, tannins. The wines on offer were: -Barnardt Boyes Premium Blend 2012: which is a Shiraz dominated blend with silky smooth tannins. -Barnardt Boyes Pinotage: The Pinotage grape is a crossing between Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsault) grape varieties and is a uniquely South African grape variety. The wine has a lovely fruitful finish which makes it an easy-drinking wine for any occasion. -Barnardt Boyes Sauvignon Blanc offers youthful green tinges, fresh grassy and herbaceous aromas. As an alternative to our reds and dry white, we offered a delightful Moscato Bianco from Piemonte, Italy. With only 4,5% alcohol and with sweet and fruity flavours, this wine was thoroughly enjoyed by a great number of guests. Our other red wine was Finca la Solana de Luzon from D.O Jumilla, Spain. With its dark fruit on the palate, meat and herby notes and slight chocolate finish, this was undoubtedly a crowd favorite at the 7th wine party!

At our 8th party we introduced new wines. We again started the evening with a sparkling wine from Piedmonte, Italy. This sweet, low-in-alcohol, easy drinking wine got the ball rolling before we moved onto the heavier red wines; a Côtes du Rhône Reserve 2013, red blends from the Rhone Valley are typically blends of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvêdre, which gives these wines a characteristic ‘spiciness’. Expect a nose composed of delicious red fruit like strawberries, blackberries, currants and spices. What is the future outlook for Daegu Wine Club? We do have future events in the pipeline. For example, we recently launched our brand and hosted our 1st Busan Wine Club Party on the 6th of December 2014. Furthermore, on the 31st of December we will host our New Year’s Eve Special at Namaste Indian Restaurant in Haeundae: this event will include unlimited curry and wine! We anticipate that the excitement, exclusivity of our wine, and unbelievable price for consumable unlimited wine, will be a platform for future success of our events. -continued on p48-

What’s Korea Wine Club? We don’t want to limit this amazing venture to only Daegu. Korea is in need of affordable, non-pretentious wine functions, and we want to lead the way by offering our guests exactly that. So we take what we have done with Daegu Wine Club, and apply it in other major/metropolitan cities in South Korea using the same business model. It’s a great time, and we feel the time is now. This could not be more evident than with the launch of Busan Wine Club and soon we will be hosting wine of parties in Seoul. So watch this space!

Recently my wife, some friends of mine and I had an opportunity to visit one of South Korea’s crown jewels, Busan. Being South Korea’s second largest metropolis after Seoul, there is no way you could see what all that Busan has to offer in one week, let alone a weekend. On this trip our plan was to see the 10th Annual Busan Fireworks Festival. This event has had reports of over a million in attendance from around the world. Well a million is a big number and seeing is believing. Looking at pictures from past event you might be convinced but I was not. Back in August, we tried to get reservations for the event but failed. Every hotel and motel on Gwangalli Beach was booked solid. Now there are rows and rows of places to stay, ranging from a five star hotels (2,ooo,ooo won and up) to two stars (150,ooo won). The 150K rooms are usually only 70K but people will pay when they want to stay. Moreover, we did. Fortunately, for us there was a cancellation and we were able to stay at the SunCity Motel right on the beach. 10월의 마지막 주에 아내와 친구 몇몇과 함께 한국의 왕관 보석과도 같은 부산에 방문할 기회가 있었다. 서울 다음으로 큰 광엯로써 일주일 내에 부산이 갖고 있는 모든 것을 볼 수 있는 방법은 없다. 이번 여행에 대한 우리의 계획은제 10회 부산불꽃축제를 보는 것이었다. 이 행사는 전세계에서 백만 명이 넘는 사람들이 찾아온다고 알려졌다. 글쎄, 백만은 큰 숫자이니 봐야 믿을 수 있겠다. 지난 행사 때의 사진을 보면 믿을 수도 있겠지만 나는 그렇지 않았다. 지난 8월에 이번 축제를 위해 숙박업소를 예약하려 했지만 실패했다. 광안리

해수욕장에 있는 모든 호텔과 모텔이 빈 방 하나 없이 에약 되어 있었다. 이제는 2성급호텔(15만원)에서부터 5성급 호 텔(2백만 이상) 머무를 곳이 줄줄이 서 있다. 15만원짜리 방 은 보통 7만원이지만 사람들은 필요한 때를 감수해야 한다. 우리가 그랬다. 다행히도 취소가 된 방 있어서 해수욕장 바 로 앞에 있는선시티 모텔에 머무를 수 있었다.

Once we arrived, we could see barges set up in front of and behind Gwangan Bridge aka Diamond Bridge. The three barges in front had scaffolding 80’ high, supporting the laser lights used in the show. When night fell, they turned on the lights. Like most Korean cities, at night, they are lit up and Gwangalli Beach is no different. Everything has a light on it but none more spectacular than the lights on Diamond Bridge. It has the world’s largest number of 16,000 LED lights. These lights made rolling messages in English and Korean. At one point, it looks like a pair of moving eyes going side to side. 부산에 도착하자 다이아몬드 브릿지라고 불리는 광안대교 앞뒤로 바지선이 설치되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 앞 쪽 의 바지선 세 척은 쇼에 사용되는 레이저 불빛을 지지하는 80m 구조물을 가지고 있었다. 밤이 되자 불이 켜졌다. 한국 의 대다수 도시가 그렇듯 밤에는 불을 밝혔고 광안리도 다르 지 않았다. 모든 것이 밝아졌지만 다이아몬드 브릿지의 불빛 보다 더 장관인 건 없었다. 다리에는 세계에서 가장 많은 수 인 1만6천개의 LED전구가 달려있다. 이 불빛은 한국어와 영어로 굴러가는 듯한 메세지를 만들어냈다. 어느 순간에는 한 쪽에서 다른 쪽 끝으로 움직이는 눈처럼 보였는데 꽤 멋 졌다.

brunch at BrunWeek. A great choice. While we were walking down the beach on our way to eat, we could see people leaving blankets and towels. They were securing their spot for that evening. There is no way you could do this in the States. After we ate, we secured our spot as well. Around 11am, you could see the police coming in by the busloads. The main road along the beach was closed around noon. There were people already, under umbrellas or in the shade trying to stay out of the sun. 일어나자 아름다운 날이 우리를 기다리고 있었고 BrunWeek에서 브런치를 먹기로 했는데 아주 좋은 선택이었다. 브런치를 먹으러 가는 길에 백사장을 향해 걸어가는데 사람 들이 이불과 수건을 깔아두고 가는 것을 보았다. 저녁을 위 해 자리를 맡아 두는 것이었다. 미국에서는 절대 있을 수 없 는 일이었다. 식사를 하고 난 다음어 우리도 자리를 맡았다. 오전 11시쯤 버스 여러대를 타고 경찰이 왔다. 정오쯤엔 백 사장 가까이의 대로가 통제되었다. 사람들은 벌써 해를 피해 양산을 쓰거나 그늘 아래로 들어갔다.

After the show, there was not a lot of trash on the beach. They cleaned it up fast and put what trash there was in large bags. By noon the next day, all the bags were gone. All the tents , port-a-potties , chairs, and trash remove. The beaches were brushed and clear of all evidence of the event. Korea is so efficient that’s why I love being here. 나를 가장 감명깊게 한 것은 뒷정리였다. 쇼가 마치자 백사 장에는 쓰레기가 별로 남지 않았다. 사람들은 신속히 치우고 커다란 자루에 쓰레기를 버렸다. 다음날 정오쯤이 되자 자루 도 모두 사라지고 없었다. 모든 텐트와 간이화장실, 의자, 쓰 레기들이 치워졌다. 백사장은 깨끗이 치워졌고 행사의 흔적 들 역시 하나도 님지 않았다. 한국은 효율적이며 이것이 이 곳에 사는 것을 정말 좋아하는 이유이다.

The show began at 8 o’clock sharp, with fireworks being shot from the barges and on the bridge, under the bridge and over the bridge. At one point, the fireworks looked like they were a river flowing beneath the bridge. Combined with the laser lights and music, this was an AWESOME spectacle to witness. The best fireworks show, EVER! I believe a million people did attend this event. Viewing from the beaches, streets, hotels, motels and on the water. There were many folks out there. Seeing is believing. 불꽃쇼는 바지선, 다리 의 우,아래, 그 너머에서 쏘아 올려 진 불꽃과 함께 정확히 8시에 시작했다. 한 순간 불꽃이 다 리 아래로 흐르는 강처럼 보이기도 했다. 레이저 불빛과 음 악과 어우러져 정말 끝내주는 장관을 볼 수 있었다. 단연코 생애 최고의 불꽃쇼였다. 이 행사에 백만명이 몰렸다는 것 을 믿는다. 백사장에서, 거리에서, 호텔에서, 모텔에서 그리 고 물 위에서. 많은 사람들이 있었다. 봐야만 믿을 수 있다.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996).
