EtOH's Drafthouse Classic American Pies and Craft Beer • Written and photographed by Lindsay Mickles / Translated by Yujeong Lee

I first had the pleasure of visiting EtOH’s for a friend’s birthday a few weeks ago. Due to my previous experiences with ‘American-style pizza’ in Korea, I was a bit skeptical to say the least. Most other places I’ve been to merely offered fusion pizzas and low quality ingredients. Though EtOH’s received stellar reviews on Good Eats in Daegu (Facebook Group), I knew I’d have to taste it to believe it. My friend and I decided to keep it simple and order a Mushroom and Cheese Pizza and I had a Guinness to drink. We were very happy with the pizza, I was glad to receive a proper pour on my Guinness, and we agreed to try one of the specialty pizzas on a future trip.

I returned to EtOH’s on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and brought another friend to taste-test. I was happy that she and I have similar tastes in pizza toppings and were able to quickly decide on The Greek Pizza. We also ordered the beer sampler with 3 I.P.A.s (Kabrew, Sharkinator and Railhouse) and the Paulaner.

Our experience was nothing short of fantastic. The pizza was cooked to perfection (including a nice crispy crust), the toppings were fresh and plentiful, and the beer was fabulous! The pizza and beer are both well priced in comparison to other places around, and 3 people can easily split a pie (unless you are starving). It is nice to find good quality American-style pizza in Daegu! I will certainly be back to try some of their other pizzas and sandwiches.

After eating the fabulous pizza, I had a quick chat with the owner, Ryan, and learned more about the history and future of EtOH’s. Ryan has been living with his wife in Korea for 13 years and he has a long history in the restaurant business. Though he started as an English Teacher, Ryan knew he was destined for other things. After visiting Itaewon’s foreigner restaurants several times, he wondered why Daegu didn’t have anything similar to offer. Ryan decided it was time to bring good American pizza to Daegu and he worked on his recipes for more than 6 months before he was ready to share them with the public.

The name EtOH comes from the chemical shorthand for alcohol (Ethanol, Oxygen and Hydrogen) and is a playful homage to Breaking Bad. There are many other cool things to know about EtOH’s: you can contribute to the playlist using an app on your phone, you can make reservations through their Facebook page, they have vegetarian and meat lover options, and they are very receptive to suggestions from their customers. Ryan also plans to introduce some new menu items within the next few months and will eventually have rotating draft beers. -continued on p10-

EtOH’s is also beginning to host weekly events, including a Rock, Paper, Scissor Tournament on Mondays, Ladies Night on Wednesdays and a Dart Tournament on Thursdays. Also, they have t-shirts for sale, which you can purchase and use to receive different discounts and deals each week. Check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Etohskorea to see all the details!

Though EtOH’s has only been open for a couple of months, it is surely destined for great success. When asked why pizza and beer, Ryan simply replied “Why not? It’s the best combination ever”. I couldn’t agree more….

Hop On, Hop Off Daegu City Bus Tour • Written and photographed by Charisse Windebank

Mom and I took Jensen on a bus tour local in our new hometown. Since I haven’t done the hop on, hop off bus tour, I decided it would be a good time to do that when Mom was visiting from the US. The tour bus stops all over town and they had one in Suesong Lake. Very convenient for us since it was walking distance from the apartment. Once you board the bus, the driver will sell you the ticket and it is good for the entire day. A brochure was available with all the stops listed and you are able to get off and on whenever and wherever you please. It was a great way to see the city and with the option to sit in the open-top 2nd deck or in the air conditioned area to stay cool. You don’t even have to get off at any stops if you don’t feel like it. Jensen fell asleep on my lap so we decided to let him sleep a bit and stay on until he woke up. Our first stop was Apsan and we climbed up the mountain and stopped by the War Memorial area. We climbed some more and bought a snack and some water from a nearby store. Jensen enjoyed the corn on a stick and we took some photos. Spring was in full swing and we took advantage of the fully bloomed flowers and captured it with our cameras.

Hop On, Hop Off - Daegu City Bus Tour

Unfortunately, it was getting late and we only had a chance to get off the bus in Apsan. With all the other stops, we spent about 3 hours on the bus and another at the foot of the mountain. We headed home and decided to do the site seeing on our own. At least we knew where it was and I can simply drive there myself. We disembarked at the same point where we initially started, Suesong Lake. I highly recommend this tour bus for anyone visiting Daegu. I’ve always loved this type of bus tour since it affords one the convenience of seeing the city and can be hopped off and on at any time of the day, depending on the schedule. Just be aware of the last pick up from any location as you may not want to be left behind and needing to find another way back to your hotel.

While the tour will pick up at any stop, the starting point is at Dongdaegu train station. Each ticket costs 5,000 won and will be stamped with the current date. It is not necessary to buy nor start at Dongdaegu since each driver will sell you a ticket at any pick up point. Valid all day, present the ticket at each stop in order to board any bus on the route. Each stop is clearly marked and have a schedule posted on the board.

Bombing Bingsu Daegu Expats Develop Summer Mobile Game • Written and Photographed by Brian M. Van Hise

Daegu-based organization Stompy Ruffers Cultural Fusion has offered its American fusion patbingsu (Korean-style shave ice) over the past two years at local festivals and events. This summer, the company is taking their love of bingsu a step further by releasing their first game for the Android system. It’s called “Bombing Bingsu” or “BomBing” for short (밤빙 in Korean) and was developed by local Daegu expat gaming studio Virtual Method.

BomBing is a fun game where you play a character catching bingsu ingredients as they fall from the sky. Ingredients must be caught in order (ice, red bean, toppings) to collect points. While power ups double your points and falling clocks give you extra time, be wary of the bird flying overhead as he will drop a load of poop which, if caught in your bowl, will knock out 20 hard earned points!

BomBing has super cute artwork as well! Artist Tasheila Banton, a former resident of both Busan and Ulsan who now resides in the US and works as a caricature artist, designed all game art, including the traditional Korean market background. She also created a curious ajumma in the foreground who, during gameplay, simply sits and watches as the bingsu falls from the sky. Banton was hired due to the perfect fit of her Korean daily life knowledge as well as her mastery in cute, cartoony illustrations. Tasheila

BomBing is Virtual Method’s first major game release and was developed first for the Android platform only, however they anticipate re-working it for Apple’s products in the near future. The developers wanted to capture the cuteness often seen in popular Korean mobile games, devise a fun objective with clever point allocations, and finally pay homage to their time here in Korea. Korean Oriental Medicine Comes to Japan

• Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos from EXCO

Back in late May, the 10th Annual Sinshu Doraein Festival was held in Matsumoto City in Nagano, Japan. The Doraein were Koreans exiled from the defeated Baekje and Goguryeo kingdoms who immigrated to Japan in the 5th and 6th centuries to ply their trades. Typically skilled craftsmen, the Doraein were adept at making tools, weapons, pottery, and even advanced irrigation systems. Today, their contributions to Japan’s history are commemorated at the Sinshu Doraein Festival, and Japanese organizers wanted to ensure that Korean heritage was well-represented in the festivities. Daegu’s contribution was the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee and Taeoreum Medical Clinic, one of Daegu’s Leading Medical Institutes.

The clinic’s mission was to promote Daegu medical tourism to the Japanese and to strengthen friendly ties and cultural exchanges. Together with the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee, Taeoreum Medical Clinic operated a promotional booth at the festival showing video clips, distributing flyers, offering consultations and check-ups, and even providing simple procedures.

24

Korean Oriental Medicine Comes to Japan

The booth was only a small part of a much larger mission, which was to discuss the opening of a new Matsumoto Oriental Medicine Academy. The idea for this new facility is to permanently offer Korean oriental medicine in Japan and act as a satellite location for a

larger, membership-only oriental medicine community, something akin to an ‘Oriental Medicine Style Association.’ The academy would sell oriental medicine products from the Daegu Yangnyeongsi, staff health consultants, and organize trips to Daegu for medical tourism. In short, the new facility would establish a permanent base of operations in another country to advertise Daegu as a medical tourism destination. Dongeun Lee from Taeoreum Medical Clinic had more to say about the project and the trip to Japan: What was the goal of the visit? As president of the Korea-Japan Friendship Club, I have tried to expand civil exchanges between the two countries and promote our activities. This visit was one way to do that. Another goal was to have a lecture on Oriental Medicine and to promote Daegu at the festival. What is the Shinshu Doraein Club? It was established in 2004. While building a new road in Matsumoto City, workers found a crown. Researchers figured out that it was similar to crowns from the Gaya Kingdom and that their ancestors are Doraein. The Japanese organized a club to honor, remember and commemorate them. They hold the Shinshu Doraein Festival every year and organize cultural exchange programs. The goal of the festival is to promote the club, promote the spirit of the Doraein, promote and understand Korean culture and to develop friendship between the two countries.

What was the schedule for the business trip? On the first day was a greeting ceremony. We met the Jeju Durunanum team which already has a 10 year relationship with Matsumoto City. On the second day, we had lectures at the auditorium of Asama Osen. In the morning, the lecture was about hot springs and Oriental food therapy. In the afternoon, Prof. Nemoto (Matsmoto Univ.), Kang Jin-oh, an herbal medicine pharmacist and I held a two hour session. 200 people came for the program. My session’s title was “Oriental Medicine and Healthy Old Age” and I introduced what oriental medicine is, what kind of diseases it treats, the role of oriental medicine in the aging process, raising, processing and commercializing medicinal herbs in Matsumoto City and opening the Oriental Medicine Academy. After the sessions, I met the Japanese doctors who attended the session and we seriously discussed sending Japanese doctors to train in Daegu and then have them work with Western medicine doctors. That way, the hospital can have a co-diagnosis system with Oriental medicine and Western medicine. On the third day was the day of the festival. We promoted Oriental medicine and Daegu, and had a health consultant at a promotion booth. Tell us more about the Oriental Medicine Academy. Matsumoto City plans to expand the academies all over Japan once it roots down in their city first. The oriental medicine satellite shop will open with the academy and will promote related products with a consultant in the shop. Also, it will send patients to Daegu over the longterm. The president of the Shinshu Doraein Club fully supports opening the academy and, along with club members, are actively trying to make it happen. Matsumoto City has an older population compared to other cities so there is great potential in medical tourism. They are interested in Oriental medicine and its’ story has been spread by word of mouth. Once the academy opens, it would be very popular.

What was the outcome of the visit to Matsumoto? 6 or 7 patients will visit Daegu for treatment from Sep 4th~ 8th, along with an additional 15 patients from Oct 12th~15th. We processed orders for Oriental medicine products, Oriental medicine cosmetics and herb medicine. Most importantly, we opened up a trusting relationship with the local people. Besides, the Daegu Medical Tourism Committee had other promotion booths at both the Nuritshow in Daegu, which was to promote friendship between Korea and Japan, and at the 2015 Hiroshima Flower Festival. Many Japanese showed a lot of interest in oriental medicine and skin care with medicinal herbs. All these efforts is a positive and exciting step in establishing Daegu as an international medical tourism destination.

Gajok

Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p87 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul

Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road

Kyungpook Uni. Area

Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price. Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics. District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor. District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.

1. Most stores close around six or seven p.m. (It varies by store and some may be open later) 2. Bring cash! These vendors do not accept credit cards. So hit the ATM before you shop here. 3. Compare prices at different shops. There are many vendors that sell similar products here so shop around and consider your options before buying. 4. Restrooms are located at the top of each sector or between floors.
