A BRUNCH TO REMEMBER GOURMET BRUNCH FOR BRUNCH-AHOLICS

As a self-proclaimed brunch-aholic, I have been on a desperate search for the best brunch spot in Daegu ever since moving to Korea. And ladies and gentleman… after over two years, I believe I have found it.

Le Gourmet de Paris 16 is conspicuously located on the city’s main street at Beomeo (Beomeo 3(Sam)– dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, Beomeo Subway Exit #1). With its Parisian inspired architecture and blue paint, it is hard to miss. The establishment is primarily a bakery with a wide variety of breads and desserts baked daily. However, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., they serve the most delectable brunch on the third floor. (Bakery operating hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m).

The interior of the building is just as charming as the exterior. Decorated with quirky artwork and figurines, ornate chandeliers and mirrors, and life-size horse statues, it is a lovely setting whether for a casual catch-up with friends or a romantic date.

Now let’s get to the most important stuff: the food! On my first visit, I ordered the “Tomato Omelet” (₩ 9,000), which was filled with their homemade tomato sauce (I would liken to a fresh salsa), processed cheese, and

spinach. It was accompanied by a mixed green salad with cherry tomatoes and vinaigrette dressing on the side, and a basket full of fresh white bread. I enjoyed every single bite of my meal and felt it was a relatively healthier alternative to your standard western breakfast (i.e. no potatoes).

For those of you with a sweeter tooth, fear not, Paris 16 has got you covered, too. The “Sweet Pancake” (₩8,500), which I ordered on my second visit, consists of three fluffy pancakes layered with generous amounts of real whipped cream and fresh raspberry jam, topped with a grilled banana, blueberries and strawberries, and drizzled in icing sugar. They even

provide you with additional whipped cream on the side, in case you’re an addict. The raspberry filling added an element of tartness to the otherwise super sweet meal, which I thoroughly appreciated.

As for the meat-eating population, you can order “Le Brunch A” (₩10,000), which includes French toast, sausage, bacon, an egg (sunny-side-up), and a green salad. I haven’t personally tasted this item but my boyfriend raves about it. Furthermore, there are plenty of other options on their lunch menu, such as sandwiches and salads, which I am looking forward to sampling in the very near future.

One last thing, if you’re looking for a posh, English experience, you can make a reservation for afternoon tea at Paris 16 (on weekdays only). I ordered the twotiered plate for ₩18,000, which included one cup of tea of my choice. (You can get three tiers for ₩28,000). The tray was assorted with all kinds of decadent goodies, including a ham sandwich on a croissant, a chocolate chip scone, the most gorgeous macarons I have ever laid eyes on, and plenty more. It was more than enough for two people to share amicably. As always at Paris 16, the presentation of the food and drinks was impeccable. I highly recommend high tea for a special occasion. However, make sure to call at least a day in advance to make your reservation (053744-8216).

10

(053-744-8216).

The next time you’re craving a scrumptious brunch made with fresh, high quality ingredients, check out Le Gourmet de Paris 16 and decide for yourself, is it the best brunch in Daegu?

I recently took the Mt. Palgongsan Course and had a great day exploring parts of the city I’d never been to before. Our first stop was at the Bullo-dong Tomb Park- I will definitely be back a little later in spring to spend more time and to see everything in different shades of green (instead of brown). Next, we headed to the Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum (the only one in Korea) to learn about the history of Korean Bronzeware. We saw a quick video (with English subtitles) and had another 30 minutes to explore the

museum. Finally, we headed towards Mt. Palgongsan, where we could visit the Daegu Safety Theme Park, Donghwasa Temple and Mt. Palgongsan itself. We were given 3 hours to explore the area and were provided with discount coupons for a local restaurant and the Mt. Palgongsan cable car. We skipped the theme park and spent a wonderful 3 hours walking around Donghwasa Temple and Mt. Palgongsan.

NATURE IN THE CITY A PHOTOWALK WITH THE DAEGU PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

I joined the Daegu Photography Club shortly after arriving in town last August. Though I’ve only been on a couple photowalks with the club, they are always fun and very relaxing! It is a great way to meet new people, see some new parts of Daegu and learn some photography tips and tricks along the way. There is always a wide range of photographers, interests and gear-it is great to ‘talk shop’ with like-minded expats and learn from each other.

For this photowalk, we decided to take advantage of Cherry Blossom season and head to the Daegu Arboretum on a Sunday afternoon. Upon arriving at the Arboretum, we were welcomed with perfect weather and many blooming flowers. The Arboretum was quite busy with many couples, families and hikers (there are a few hiking trails there too). We walked the grounds for 3 to 4 hours and got to know each other while exploring the blooms at the Arboretum. It was a perfect day to meet new people, take some shots and soak up the beautiful Daegu weather!

One of my favorite things about the photo walks is when we all post an image or two to the Daegu Photography Club Facebook Group and we get to see everyone’s work! Here are some of the highlights:

Q: Where are you favourite spots to shoot in the spring? How about in the summer, where would you recommend going? Q: Damo

A: My favourite spots for shooting in the spring in Korea are Namsan, Andong and Gyeongu.

Q: I know equipment doesn't make a good photo, but it's always fun to talk about the gear people use to capture the experiences around them. What's in your camera bag and do you think it is more important to have a quality camera body or lens?

A: I began shooting using a small point and shoot camera. Later I upgraded to my first cheap entry level DSLR, then a mid-range DSLR, Nikon D90,which I am using now. It’s a crop frame camera. But it is really handy and works well for me. I have few lenses, to mention, a 18-105, a 70-300, a 50 mm prime and a 90 mm macro lens. I normally shoot everything outdoors so I don’t use flashes or other lighting equipment. Regarding the question about lens and body, I would say it’s important to invest on good lenses, because lenses have more to do with quality of images you take and lenses always have their value, both monetary and photographic, whereas camera bodies get outdated easily as new technologies come. Q: As an avid photographer, I'm curious about what sites or resources you might use to improve your craft?

A: Being a hobbyist photographer, I try not to spend money on paid site. I use 500px and Flickr to upload my images, also Facebook, Instagram and Google Plus. With Flickr, you have various groups which are excellent places to get suggestions and information about your photos and your gear. Other than that, I use websites such as http://www.phooanswers.co.uk, http://www.photoshopdaily.co.uk and http://scottkelby. com. I frequently use various Youtube videos on photography as well. Q: What pieces of advice do you have for people who want to take high quality photos?

A: To take high quality photos, you should have a clear idea about your camera. It can be a smartphone camera or a high end camera. In both case, you should know the limitations and strength of your gear and take pictures accordingly. A better camera always gives better images. If your camera has an option to take pictures in RAW, do it and process using some excellent photo editing software.

Q: Last question, where's one place in Korea that you've wanted to visit for a photo session? And how can one get involved in a photo group? Does Daegu have any groups available for those who live behind the camera?

A: I have never visited Mt. Seorak which I really want to visit during autumn. There are several photography groups mainly in Facebook and Flickr. In Daegu, we have Daegu Photography Club (https://www.facebook. com/groups/37734146258). Photography enthusiasts are always welcome to join us. We do have regular photowalks, discussions etc. Feel free to join there!

LEARNING KOREAN

• Written and photographed by Alana McKie Translated by Yujeong Lee

MORE THAN JUST NODDING AND SMILING

Most foreigners are only here for one year, so why put in the time to learn Korean? There are so many 외국 인 in Daegu that it's easy to have an active social life without speaking to locals. Plus, languages are hard!

Korean gives me a sense of purpose and something to work towards. I will never become fluent - my talents in language acquisition are atrocious - but hopefully soon I will be able to answer my sweet neighbour’s questions in the elevator.

For me, the main reason to learn is a desire to say something beyond “안녕하세요” to the shopkeepers, restaurant workers, and neighbours I see on a daily basis. I feel like an idiot nodding and smiling when my neighbour takes my hand and chats when we take the elevator together. I also get lost a lot, so knowing how to ask for directions would be handy. Finally, studying

The YMCA has classes in the mornings, evenings, and on weekends. With my Saturday class I had to force myself to review during the week or I'd be lost during class time. There is also the option to do intensive classes, which are twice a week.

If you do decide to study, you'll find lots of options. It’s easy to take an hour or two on your own to learn the basics of Hangul (the Korean alphabet) online. From there you could start on the ever-popular “Talk To Me In Korean” website and then find yourself a language partner or a class to start speaking.

Talk To Me In

Just recently, I've started attending a free language exchange, The Box. Each session at The Box is a onehour Korean lesson, followed by one hour of English conversation with a small group of Koreans.

I signed up for the YMCA language class when I arrived and took two beginner courses with them. My first course (October - January) was big, with 10 people. It was perfect because I had just arrived and hadn't met many people yet. The first course went over the alphabet (a perfect review) before jumping into useful phrases, basic grammar, and vocabulary. My second course (January - March) had just 4 students so we got a lot of speaking in, as well as covered tons of grammar. The teachers I had were well-trained, patient, and focused on students' needs.

The lessons are less structured than the YMCA so it’s good to go with an idea of what you want to learn. The conversation class is a great way to learn about Korean culture and make Korean friends. The Box also hosts regular picnics and parties in Daegu. The Box has sessions in the mornings, evenings, and on weekends, and it’s best to attend twice a week.

The Box

There are many other ways to learn Korean too, including Yoon Lab and private tutors. A quick search on Facebook will connect you to your best option.

I did very little research on Vietnam before our trip, as I didn’t have the time (or brainpower) during the last couple months of teaching in 2014. I booked a private tour with a couple of friends and knew it was the right decision for me. Ideally, I would have preferred to do

Before our tour started, we spent a few days on Phu Quoc Island, enjoying some much needed R&R and exploring a bit of this small, but lovely island.

After returning to Ho Chi Minh, we spent a couple days exploring the city and surrounding attractions (Cu Chi Tunnels and Cao Dai Temple). The Cu Chi Tunnels were interesting and informative, but the highlight of the day was getting to see the Cao Dai Temple and their afternoon service. I will absolutely go back there and spend a few hours exploring the grounds!

After spending one final night in Ho Chi Minh, we set off to explore the Mekong Delta. En route to Can Tho, we stopped off in My Tho to visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda. It seemed like we were traveling along the highway, with not much to look at, when we stumbled upon this beautiful gem amongst the desert-like scenery. I was amazed that this unassuming area had such an amazing temple. I highly recommend visiting the Vinh Trang Pagoda if you are planning a visit to Southern Vietnam.

After leaving, we continued to the docks in Can Tho where we took a peaceful boat ride to Unicorn Island. We visited a Coconut Candy Workshop, tasted the sweets from a local honeybee farm, enjoyed some local fruits and tea, listed to some traditional Southern Vietnamese singing and took a sampan ride on the creek (which seemed right out of a movie to me).

After we finished exploring the islands, we headed to downtown Can Tho for the night and headed out bright and early at 7:30 am to visit the Cai Rang Floating Markets. We soaked in the atmosphere while enjoying some very fresh and juicy pineapple!

We spent another couple of days in Vietnam before we moved on to Cambodia. I absolutely loved the time I spent in Vietnam and look forward to returning to explore the North and return to some of my favorite places in the South.

HOW TO COOK

• Written and photographed by Ryan Eldredge http://dumbindaegu.blogspot.kr Translated by Kate Ko

MEAT DONE RIGHT

If you're looking for something other than galbi for your meat craving, you might want to try something that's readily (and cheaply!) available in Korea at every corner butcher shop, braised pork shoulder! If you've never braised something before, it's super easy and the recipe is extremely forgiving, so feel free to make substitutions or leave things out if you don't have them (except the meat). I love this whole technique because you can use it to make about a hundred other dishes (KimchiJiggae perhaps?). Just change up your meat and/or braising liquids. All you need is a single large pot and a single burner. For this dish I used things that remind me of Korea and Daegu, namely beer, soju and apples. Here's what I used.

38

How To Cook - Meat Done Right

A pork shoulder (you can just use one, but I was cooking for eight people, so I used one and a half)"Moksal" in Korean One bottle of soju Good apple juice (not too sweet, go for 100% not from concentrate if possible) Beer (I used Hite, but use whatever) Onions Apples Garlic

http://www.daegucompass.com

Step 1

Step 2

Step 1_ If you have a mind to, you can start by searing your meat in the pot you plan on using (go big). If you don't want to, you don't have to because you're going to be cooking this hunk of tenderness for four hours and it's going to be loaded with plenty of flavor at that point.

I go ahead and give an onion a rough chop and wash and prepare about a handful of garlic cloves.

DAEGU COMPASS JUNE 2015

Step 2_ When you think your pork has a sufficient sear (mine doesn't really), go ahead and just pour the whole bottle of soju into the pot. Yes, the whole bottle, don't be scared. You can see how little a bottle of soju is in my stock pot. Go ahead and dump in your onions and garlic as well.

39

Step 4

Step 5

Step 3_ After that, you want to add an equal amount of apple juice and beer. I just used a coffee cup, measuring really isn't important, you just keep adding an equal amount until about 1/2 to 3/4 of the pork is covered.

a day ahead and just reheat it the next day when your guests arrive. Here's how you do that.

Step 4_ Go ahead and add whatever seasonings you want. I used a couple of bay leaves and some pepper. You don't really want to add salt at this point because the liquid is going to cook way down and you might end up over salting at this point. Next bring the whole mess to a very low simmer for about 3-4 hours depending on the size of the shoulder. Don't worry; it's really hard to overcook this.

Step 6

Step 5_ So how do you know when it's done? Here is mine about 4 hours later. The whole house smelled amazing at this point and the meat was so tender that I could push a chopstick right through the center with absolutely no resistance. At this point, you could remove the meat, skim off the fat and reduce and salt the remaining braising liquid to make a sauce. If you're like me though, you can make this whole thing

40

How To Cook - Meat Done Right

Wow, one day later you can see how much fat has collected at the top.

Step 6_ Once the fat is removed, go ahead and skin and cut up an apple and cut another onion or two into large rings. Add them to the pot and bring the whole thing to a boil.

Step 7_ The next step is to remove the meat and large pieces of apple and onion to a serving dish. Reduce and salt the remaining liquid to your taste and then add some of the liquid (glaze) to the serving tray.

YANGNYEONGSI

• Written by Matthew Caracciolo Photographed by EXCO

DAEGU’S FIRST BRUSH WITH MEDICAL TOURISM

Officially, medical tourism has only been around in Daegu and Korea for a few years. Historically, and on a more local scale, Daegu’s been in the medical tourism business for hundreds of years as the site of one of Korea’s preeminent Yangnyeongsi, or oriental medicinal herb markets, since the Joseon Dynasty. There are several such markets on the Korean peninsula, but Daegu’s is regarded as the best and as such has been designated as a Special Oriental Medicine Zone, the first of its’ kind. Several countries relied on Daegu for oriental medical supplies while the United States was still a British colony. Although Daegu is busy expanding its’ modern medical facilities to accommodate more tourism, these efforts are only the latest in a long history of leadership and importance in the medical industry. Daegu’s Yangnyeongsi began business in 1658 and opened twice a year: the spring and the fall. Originally a small operation behind a local inn near the northern gate of Daegu castle, the market grew and was moved to its’ present location in 1908 after the Japanese occupied the city and the castle was destroyed. As to why Yangnyeongsi was created, there are several competing theories, although most agree

42

that generally its’ creation was part of a national decree to make the collection of medicinal ingredients more efficient. One hypothesis is that as a central hub, Yangnyeongsi was meant to be a wholesale facilitator between producers and brokers in what was already a major market city. The Chinese Tribute Hypothesis is that the market was established to streamline the collection process of medicinal tributes to China. Similarly, another hypothesis states that the market was established in response to growing demand of medical ingredients in Japan. Last is the National Establishment Theory, in which scholars claim that the development of the market was a result of the initiation of Daedong Law, a system requiring merchants to pay tribute to the central Korean government with products rather than currency. Whichever the reason, Yangnyeongsi became a prominent center of medicinal herbs and ingredients and established Daegu as a medical hub, a designation it would earn again in the 21st century. Today, Yangnyeongsi is still the best place to procure herbal ingredients for oriental medicine. A stroll down the old streets reveals shop after shop of bizarre roots, strange-smelling plants, and deer-less antlers. A handful of cafes offer healthy, traditional

alternatives to Americanos and sweet potato lattes such as unique herbal teas. Even the local version of samgyetang is laced with additional herbs. Yangnyeongsi’s present is just as compelling as its’ past. Yangnyeongsi’s role in making Daegu a center of medicine has influenced modern policymakers to retain the city’s position as a leading medical city well into the 21st century. Outside of the market, Daegu’s tradition as a medical hub is present in the numerous top-notch hospitals in the area, each staffed by equally top-notch doctors and personnel. Over 18,000 people are spread between 6 university hospitals, 29 general hospitals, and 30 oriental medicine clinics, including 6,000 medical doctors. One of those hospitals, Daegu Oriental Hospital of Daegu Haany University, carries on Yangnyeongsi’s tradition of oriental medicine, specializing in posttraumatic treatments. The hospital also serves as a bridge to the present, combining modern medicine techniques with traditional procedures. It’s the hospital’s goal to be a research leader in this field well into the 21st century. The city is highly competitive in the fields of medical examination and treatments per hospital, placing within the top 10 of Korea. Internationally, medical care is incredibly affordable here, averaging ½ the cost of Singapore’s medical care, ¼ of Japan’s, and as much as 1/9 of the United States’. Daegu is truly a medical tourist destination. But Daegu’s medical and tourism personnel aren’t busy putting Daegu on the medical map for the first time, they’re busy keeping it where it has been for hundreds of years.

Visitors to the Yangnyeongsi area can find out more about the market’s history at the Daegu Yangneyongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine. Tranquil and free of charge, the museum features hands-on activities and the opportunity to learn more about Korea’s traditional medicine and Yangnyeongsi’s role in the medical care of the Korean people.

LASER BEAMS FOR YOUR EYES

LASEK EYE SURGERY IN KOREA

I finally took the plunge and had LASEK eye surgery. I'm sharing detailed information about the operation to help those who are considering the surgery, especially my fellow expats. Initially, the thought of someone lasering my eyes was...well, it just wasn't something I considered. Now, however, it has been some time since the operation and I feel GREAT and can see more clearly than I think I've ever been able to in my life. Why'd I Do It? Umm...because I wanted to see better! *casts aside sarcasm* Actually, I was setting financial goals for my future and realized that LASEK would pay for itself after 10 months because of the money I would save on contact lenses/glasses/accessories/vision insurance/eye checkups, etc. Also, South Korea has built an amazing reputation for its medical services and is a huge medical tourism hub. Finally, the price here is ridiculously low! You can have eye surgery, along with all the necessary checkups and medications, for far less than the price of having one eye done in the States. The Basics LASIK, LASEK — what's the difference? The main differences between the two are the actual surgical procedure, pain, and recovery time. LASIK is by far the more popular option because it involves minimal pain and advertises a two-day recovery time. The surgical process involves the cutting of a thin layer of your cornea, lifting it to one side, and replacing it. There's one little problem; there is a very small chance that the flap on your eye could one day come undone if you happen to be, let's say, hit in the face by a tennis ball. Since I lead a fairly active lifestyle and currently pursuing a career that may take me to various developing countries where I can't just walk into a surgeon and have that fixed, I opted for LASEK.

44

Where I Went At first, I was hesitant about having what I perceived as a major medical operation in a foreign country, as my last experience with hospitals abroad (in Argentina) was...well, let's not go there. But after seeing my nextdoor neighbor and several other friends go under the beam, I knew I could do it. After copious research, I decided to make the trip from Daegu to Seoul to have my surgery at Glory Eye Group in Gangnam. http:// seouleyegroup.co.kr/eng/index.html One salient point about Glory Eye Group is that most everyone there speaks English well enough for you to conduct business. I mean, I speak Korean at a functional level, but I have no time for something to be mistranslated and to have my operation go wrong — you only get two eyes, after all — and specifically sought out a place where I wouldn't need a translator. The clinic had rave reviews, the surgeons trained at Harvard Med and spoke fluent English, and they were running a special sale to attract foreign residents, so I decided it was worth the two-hour ride to Seoul. This clinic offered such an amazing deal, which I’ll detail later in the article. Initial Consultation This went very smoothly. I went in and after a short wait, was called to an impressive row of testing machines in the back. If you've ever had an eye exam, you'll be familiar with some of the machines. The people at Glory have an assembly line of machines for you to go through, and you finish with the typical wall chart. You then meet with your surgeon, with whom you will make the decision for what type of surgery to have. If you have thin corneas, you'll be ineligible for LASIK and will have to have LASEK—sorry! Fortunately, I wanted LASEK anyway and my corneas are apparently some of the thickest in Korea, so he told

me I could have whichever surgery I wanted. After a cursory three-minute meeting, you set your surgery date and you're off. I knew I'd need time off, so I opted to return a month later during my vacation time, so that I could properly recover. That said, they're perfectly happy to have you do your consultation at noon and then laser you up immediately afterward! Oh, Korea, your efficiency never ceases to amaze me. The Surgery I returned to Glory with butterflies in my stomach... no, they were more like mammoth moths that were consuming me with a vengeance...as I thought about what I was about to undergo. However, the staff soon allayed my concerns as I went through the battery of optical tests again. After the tests, I went to the pharmacy to pick up my medicine and the first set of eye drops. A young woman emerges from the sliding glass doors to fit me with a surgical cap — that's when I knew it was real! I said several prayers and practiced breathing deeply for a few minutes to calm my nerves. Shortly, she calls me in for surgery. I lay prostrate on a surgical bed with my face under a machine producing a really bright light. A nurse applied some sort of cold numbing solution to the area around my eyes. It must have done its job because I felt zero pain during the surgery. My surgeon enters after a few minutes; I actually haven't noticed him because I've already started to doze off. Flanked by several aides, he

DAEGU COMPASS JUNE 2015

gives me cursory instructions and then says that we'll get started. He puts a device on my right eye to keep it from closing. I don't like this contraption because it hurts a little in the corner of my eye, but it's not that bad. He proceeds to apply some alcohol solution and other things into my eye, and reminds me to keep my eye open (as if I could close it with that clamp on it!) and my chin straight because the laser is next. "It will last 20 seconds," he says. My job is to stare at the green light through all of this squirting, pouring, and lasering. The laser comes on and my heart thumps. I stare at the green light and the doctor gives me a countdown. "15 more seconds...ten...five...one. Finished." We repeat this process for my left eye, and the surgeon says, "The surgery was successful. Congratulations!" as he switches off the laser. I mumble my gratitude and follow him outside to slip back on my shoes (a struggle because I can't see the buckles). He says, "You will have pain 30 minutes from now, and then severe pain for the next two days. Take a rest." GRRREEEAAAT! We head back down to the lobby. My vision is ridiculously blurry and I can only just follow his tall shadow down to the elevator. I arrive downstairs and take a seat in front of the reception desk. I'm not fully sure what I should be doing at this point, other than "taking a rest." My veins feel as if some thousand-degree liquid is coursing through them, my stomach has started to do backflips, and I feel as if I could vomit at any moment. An attendant comes over to put in the first of what will be countless eye drops. I'm grateful for this because I can't be trusted right now to bring anything within two feet of my eyes. "Are you sick," she asks. How did she know that I feel like this, I wonder. The feelings subside and I sit there in supposed recovery, wondering why I'm in the world's brightest lobby instead of a dark back room somewhere. I push the thought out of my mind and grab tissue from the bathroom to wipe my eyes, which might as well be Niagara Falls by this point. I wait for half an hour, not in terrible pain but not exactly feeling like a million bucks either, and as I glance at my watch — a habit that's laughable at this point because I can't read the face well at all — I was met with a flash of pain through the eyes. "30 minutes. He said the pain would start after 30 minutes." This made me consider the prospect of sitting in my hotel room in intense pain without attendants swarming around to help, so I head up to the pharmacy again to get some more pain medicine (it was just Tylenol, but it helped later). I wait in the same spot in the

45

hopes that Jeff, the man through whom I'd set up the surgery and hotel stay, would appear soon. After what feels like an eternity but is actually only another half hour, a blue-suited man (I could at least see colors!) comes to my rescue. Jeff. I make my final appointment with the clinic, and Jeff and I head downstairs. He helps me into a taxi, giving me the Eye Group card that would cover the cost of my first night in the room. Provista Hotel is on the same street as the clinic, so the ride is only 5 minutes. The taxi driver, who was obviously accustomed to driving surgery patients, gingerly warns me in Korean to move slowly as I get out of the car. Only when I pick up my small suitcase do I realize that I was a bit weak; it took some effort to lift the bag. I check in and head up to my room. I'm pleased to see...well, I saw it later...that my room is actually a nicely appointed loft studio apartment. Quite tired by this time, I change into pajamas and doze off for three hours, but not before closing the curtains, which are allowing an extremely painful ray of sun into the room. I had taken off my sunglasses when I reached my floor, and the sun seemed to sear right through my eyes. IT HURT! I can't help but think that this is what vampires must feel like. I look at my phone for the first time, an act I immediately regret because this pain is five times worse than the sunlight. I navigate my phone by touch to call my mom and tell her that the surgery went fine before falling into a deep sleep wearing my flashy new sleep goggles, which are designed to prevent you from rubbing your eyes or irritating them during the night (I promise, they help). The LASEK operation itself didn't hurt at all. I didn't even feel the laser. I got a great deal on the operation and I'm excited to see clearly for the first time in a long time! Road to Recovery I wake up at 3:15pm, and put in the first of my eye drops. I have four sets: one to be put in every 10 minutes, another every 30 minutes, and two others every half hour but separated by a five-minute gap. I listen to Orwell's "Animal Farm" (praise the Lord for audiobooks!) and later venture downstairs to the Outback Steakhouse from which I would get all my meals. I walk into the hallway with the trepidation of an orator going into his first public speech, and place my order. I'm wearing sunglasses indoors despite the evening hour, and am surprised to find that no one is throwing me the furtive, examining, suspicious glances that I expect. I eat dinner and go back to my audiobook.

46

Day 2 (the day after surgery) I wake up at some unholy hour, maybe 4 a.m., and feel a pang of hunger. I finish the other half of my dinner and spend the morning continuing my audioread of H.G. Wells' "The Invisible Man." My eyes are still Water Works Central and I've already run through the bedside box of tissues. I wash my face (very carefully) and brush my teeth — even if no one will see me all day, that's no reason not to keep myself in order. Now for the awkward moment: The doorbell to my room rings while I'm asleep. Thinking that the sound emanated from next door, I still lie there. Something tells me to get up and I make my way to the foyer, where a housekeeper has let herself in with her master room card. Both of us are surprised. She tells me in Korean that it was past checkout time, and I tell her that I'm not scheduled to check out until tomorrow (I thought it would be best to buy a second night at the hotel. Thanks, Orbitz, for the discount). Her cell phone rings; apparently, the front desk has called to give her the update that she shouldn't be in my room because I'm not checking out today. She apologizes, empties the trash cans and leaves. I can see a little more clearly than yesterday but that's not saying much. The pain today is mild and goes in and out, but is only a minor annoyance. Day 3 Not going to lie, I was miserable for the first half of this day. This is all I wrote in my journal... Day 8 Fast forward to a week after the surgery. I haven't had any pain since day 3, so I'm super happy about that. Since arriving at home, I've mostly been lounging around. I've been responding to text messages via voice note, which is AMAZING! I can't see well enough to type yet, but I'll be there soon. I can see fairly well now, definitely better than pre-surgery. As I walked to the nearby clinic for a checkup today, I was AMAZED at how I could read everything outside — names of buildings on the other side of the street, all sorts of things. Oddly, my vision is still fuzzy indoors and my eyes bend color light a bit, but nothing major. My peripheral vision is SHOT, so I have to physically turn my body around to check and see, for example, if a car is coming when I cross the street. The computer screen is still a problem, although it's sort of bearable if I wear sunglasses and zoom the text up about 300%. Recovery has gone much faster than expected!

Laser Beams For Your Eyes - LASEK Eye Surgery In Korea

http://www.daegucompass.com

3 Weeks Later I'm basically normal now! My vision is pretty great and I can use the computer without a problem. I have been breezing through books and am enjoying waking up and being able to see the numbers on my alarm clock across the room. I only have two sets of eye drops now, and as long as I use them regularly, my eyes don't get irritated. My vision is better than 20/20 and still has some improvement to go! I've finally gotten back into a normal sleep schedule and can go outside freely (although I'm still wearing sunglasses to follow the doctor's orders). I'm so happy that I had LASEK and even convinced a friend to have her own surgery the other day. Advice and Total Cost Here's a breakdown of what I spent on the whole LASEK process. As a personal finance pundit in training, I'm always interested in total cost of ownership: Operation: 800,000 KRW Post-op checkups & medicine: 200,000 KRW

DAEGU COMPASS JUNE 2015

Train tickets & food: 102,000 KRW (yes, I kept the receipts) Hotel: 140,000 KRW (One $200/night stay was free due to the clinic's promotion) Total: 1,240,000 KRW (USD $1,158) Considering that a six-month of my contact lenses in the States cost about $300, this made loads of sense for me. The recovery wasn't a tenth as bad as I thought it would be. It really only "hurt" for one day, and other than that, recovery is just annoying and limits your activity. Honestly, it's been nice having a mandated break and not being able to be as active as normal, but now I'm raring to go again. A few pieces of advice for anyone considering taking the plunge: don't watch YouTube videos of the operation being done because they will most likely make you freak out. Don't over think it. Do take at least a week (or more) off if you go for LASEK because you'll need it. Finally, pick a reputable surgeon and get ready for perfect vision for life!

SOAK UP THE SUN

• Written and photographed by Kate Heslop

SUMMER TIME PATIOS

With Daegu’s notoriously sweltering summer fast approaching, and sunny weekends already making an appearance, we went on the look-out for the best places in our fine city to dine and drink outdoors. For the more traditionalists (or…broke!), nothing quite screams summer like a sun-soaked weekend in the park. Find your nearest grassy patch (you’ve got two decent options downtown), stock up on beverages and food from the closest CU or 7/11 and grab your best friends. Perfect combination when you’re watching your won and keen for some sunbathing and frisbee tournaments! Duryu park is also a solid option for some greenery away from downtown’s busy streets. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you’ve got beautiful Apsan park only a bus ride away for the perfect picnic location. If you’re enjoying some shopping and wandering

48

Soak Up The Sun - Summer Time Patios

downtown, there are few places where you can find a sunspot to enjoy a cold drink and catch some rays. Most places have no outdoor seating, as those bustling streets are generally too crowded. There are however a few cafes with some nice, albeit small, outdoor seating areas. If you’re on Dongseong-ro 2-gil (동성로2길), you can find two coffee shops at a crossroads, both with space to sit outside and enjoy your drink. The first is The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which has two lovely outdoor seating sections on the second and third floors – keeping you well away from other shoppers and all the noise and smells of downtown. Just across the street is Mass Coffee. In front of the café there is a generous seating section surrounded by trees, giving you that little bit of privacy from the busy road. It’s a great place to head if you need to rest your weary feet from a long day of shopping…if you can get a seat! For more options of outdoor seating this summer, head out of downtown and towards Daebong-ro (대 봉로) near Kyungpook National University Hospital’s subway stop. This is one of my favourite areas of Daegu for drinking – and because it boasts extra space compared to downtown, you’ve got plenty of options for some boozing in the sun! Moss Green is a sweet little café down this street (look for the green and brick exterior) that does some delicious ice desserts – a great alternative to a cold drink on a hot day! When it’s sunny they open the large windows at the front, giving

http://www.daegucompass.com

a balcony feel, and letting that sunlight flow in. But if that’s busy, they’ve also got an outdoor seating area at the back – complete with parasols and privacy. Similar to Moss Green, Percent also has full-length windows that, during especially sunny days, get opened completely, giving the bar an almost outdoor setting. The benches at the front of Percent are practically right on the street once the windows have been slid aside, which is ideal for people-watching and ale-drinking, whilst catching those all-important sun rays! One of the cutest and most cultural streets in Daegu

DAEGU COMPASS JUNE 2015

has to be Kim Kwang Seok street (김광석길). Dedicated to the late Korean folk singer, the street is always filled with tourists and locals, perusing the market stalls, enjoying the music and admiring the wall art on display. There’s also a wonderful little café down this street called Windy Place, or 바람이불어는곳, which, you’ll be happy to know, serves beer! They’ve got a few great areas to sit in the sun, including the first floor garden, with some tables and chairs and a beautiful flower bed. If that’s full, you can head up to the second floor where you’ll find a pretty balcony overlooking the street. So take your pick of seats in the sun, grab an ice cold beer and enjoy the distant sounds of Kim Kwang Seok from the street’s speakers. You’ll find Windy Place next to a destination sign (look for the people taking selfies next to a street sign) and keep an eye out for the herb garden in front of the café to find it. So, enjoy your summer in the hot, hazy sun – and keep your eyes peeled to discover rare outdoor seating areas in Daegu. Because if you find somewhere with that perfect sun trap and great beers on tap – get yourself a seat reserved for the entire summer!

COLORFUL DAEGU FESTIVAL REVIEW

Daegu held a number of festivals over the holiday weekend at the beginning of May. I decided to head downtown to meet my awesome Daegu Compass guide, Yujeong. We first headed to the Jewelry Stage, where several traditional weddings were hosted, including one for an expat couple. The festival’s organizing committee contacted the Daegu Compass to find a foreign couple to participate. This is their story: A purple haired witch and a black haired ninja decide to be swashbuckling adventure buddies for life, traveling the world in search of the strange and fantastical.

50

Their story Nick moved to a small town where he met Meredith, a scary vampire girl, at church. They developed mutual crushes on each other, though they were too shy to pursue their feelings. Ten years later, Nick saw Meredith while visiting the US, and those feelings were renewed. Soon after Nick returned to Korea, Meredith made her feelings known. Nick wanted to see if this was meant to be, and decided to dance in a talent show to win 1,500,000 won, so he could buy a plane ticket to meet her. After spending a magical week in New York, they started dating. Meredith moved to Korea soon after and they’ve been together for over 4 years.

Festive Weddings - Colorful Daegu Festival Review

http://www.daegucompass.com

The proposal Nick and Meredith were attending a birthday party and were donning their most ridiculous costumes for the event. They stopped off at the Daegu Story Slam, where the theme was “Now or Never”. Nick bribed the StorySlam founder, Douglas Warrick, to share his story last. After telling the audience the story of how he danced to win plane money to visit Meredith, he proposed to her in front of a packed crowd of close friends. The wedding (from a witness) We’ve all been to Korean weddings, but today is different. The wedding seems to reflect the people getting married. As Nick walks towards us, a group of smartly-dressed friends, he moves with dignity and has a peaceful joy on his face. There are so many people watching him, and they also watch us on the sidelines. We must look so different to them, as we loudly cheer for our friend and push to get pictures. Even though we cannot understand the ceremony, we appreciate the details. The bows they make seem to reflect the lifelong respect they will hold for each other. When Meredith comes down the aisle, we are beside ourselves. Meredith looks so beautiful in the traditional wedding garb. The groom and the bride go from thoughtful moments of bowing to smiling at each other with lovesick faces. This is happiness. Though Nick and Meredith didn’t tell anyone back home, they know it will be a great surprise for their friends and families. They will honeymoon in Tsushima and return to Korea to continue their work teaching

English and leading Daegu’s Fight Club. After the wedding, we took a brief stroll down Handmade Shoe Alley. I had never been down that alley (nor had I ever heard of it). Yujeong explained that this was the BEST place in the city to get custom-made shoes. She shared a bit about the history and explained the high quality of the shoes made by the members of the cooperative. I was very impressed. We came across a small stage where the original proprietors greeted the audience and showed off their shoes. After leaving this small festival, Yujeong and watched the massive parade down Donsengro St. I was really impressed by the artistry, the craftsmanship and the number of participants! The parade had different sections highlighting the wide variety of people living in Daegu and the number of diverse activities that are available to visitors and residents alike. It was nice to see many foreigner faces interspersed with the locals. The atmosphere was light and the participants were very friendly and happy to pose for a picture. After watching the parade, we explored the other festivals. There were stages that showcased different local and foreign music acts, numerous vendors selling local crafts and street food, and a few places to have your fortune told. There were booths set up for children to enjoy some arts and crafts and a few spots where you could get an airbrushed tattoo! Downtown Daegu is usually busy during the weekends, especially when there is nice weather, but busy does not begin to describe the atmosphere that Saturday. The weather was perfect and the city was packed! The city truly came alive during this festival and it was nice to see everyone in great moods, enjoying the weather and entertainment. Daegu knows how to put on a great festival and I look forward to the next one!

Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p87 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric.
