“NOM NOM” Vietnamese Pho and Grill

For Your PHO FIX

Ever since I moved back to Korea last year, I’ve been craving my PHO fix. And not just any PHO, because there are many places around Daegu with really good PHO; but chicken PHO in particular. Everywhere I have looked, it’s been beef or just broth or some other variation, but no “PHO GA”, or Chicken PHO. I was really thinking to myself, since Daegu is the Chicken and Beer capitol of South Korea, that chicken would be in everything and abundantly available for things like PHO. Not so, at least, not where I could find it. So, when I get the chance to head up to Seoul, I can get my PHO fix on up there and that will settle me for a while. But what a hassle, riding the KTX train all the way up there for a bowl of noodles, right? Why can’t someone just get a really good PHO GA here locally, in Daegu, within walking distance of my home (ok, that was personal), that will satisfy my desire for Vietnamese.

작년에 한국으로 돌아온 후로 포가 매우 먹고 싶어졌다. 그냥 포 가 아니라 특히 닭고기 포가 말이다. 왜냐하면 대구에는 정말 괜 찮은 포가 있는 집은 많이 때문이다. 어디를 봐도 쇠고기가 들어 간 포나 국물만 있거나 다른 재료들이 들어있는 메뉴만 있지 “포 가(PHO GA)” 혹은 닭고기 포는 없었다. 대구가 한국의 치맥 수 도이기에 닭은 모든 음식에 들어가야 하며 포와 같은 음식에는 듬뿍 들어가야 한다고 진심으로 생각했다. 그러나 그렇지가 않아 서 어디에서도 닭고기 포를 찾을 수가 없었다. 그래서 서울에 갈 기회가 생길 때면 닭고기가 들어간 포를 먹을 수가 있으며 그 포 는 필자를 한동안 서울에서 지내게도 할 것이다. 하지만 국수 한 그릇 때문에 KTX를 타고 서울까지 가다니 얼마나 귀찮은 일인지. 그렇지 않은가? 누군가 여기 대구에서 그것도 필자의 집에서 걸 어갈 수 있는 거리에(너무 개인적인 욕심이 크다.) 가게를 열지 않 을까? 그 가게는 베트남 음식에 대한 필자의 갈망을 충족시켜줄 것이다.

I long for the days back in Columbia, Maryland, when I would go down to the little strip mall and eat noodles to my heart’s content, and not gain a lot of weight in the process. With my appetite, I can easily put down a large bowl of PHO, about 740 calories, give or take, but that’s a lot better than a burger. 매릴랜드의 콜롬비아에 살던 시절이 많이 그립다. 가게들이 모여있는 길가의 작은 상점가에 가서 마음껏 국수를 먹고 그 와중에도 몸무게가 많이 안 늘던 때가 말이다. 필자의 식성 으로는 손쉽게 커다란 포 한그릇을 먹을 수 있고 이는 얼추 약 740칼로리이지만 버거보다는 훨씬 낫다.

Anyhow, I was trolling through the Internet the other night, on Good Eats in Daegu, and I come across this guy Rickey, advertising what looks to be a Vietnamese PHO and Spring Roll place, Grand Opening, not too far from Dongdaegu Train Station. Dude! I’m all over that like crazy, hoping and praying he has PHO GA. So, I send Ricky a note on Facebook and ask the question.

Why yes Mike, he said, we sure do have Chicken PHO, come on out and check us out. My heart dropped and I was really looking forward to going out to Nom Nom for the first time. 어쨌든 어느날 밤 인터넷 상의 Good Eats in Daegu에서 닭 고기 포를 찾다가 동대구 역에서 멀지 않은 곳에서 베트남 포와 스프링롤 식당으로 보이는 곳을 연다고 광고하는 리키 씨를 알게 되었다. 여러분! 그가 포 가를 팔길 바라고 기도하 며 필자는 정신이 하나도 없었다. 그래서 리키씨에게 페이 스북에서 메세지를 보냈고 질문을 했다. “당연하죠, 저희는 닭고기 포가 메뉴에 있어요. 와서 한 번 드셔보세요.” 그의 대답이었다. 필자의 심장은 쿵하고 떨어졌고 처음으로 남남 에 가 볼 것을 정말 손꼽아 기다렸다.

Well, Rickey, you didn’t disappoint. The PHO was on target, tasty, well cooked, plated and served with tons of add-ons, available from a buffet style bar. I particularly like the sprouts with my PHO, letting them soak just long enough to absorb the flavor of the broth, but stay crunchy.

PHO portion is western sized (big) and brought quickly and piping hot. Unlike the traditional Vietnamese restaurants, Nom Nom has a beef and leaf atmosphere as well, where the hot coals are brought to the table and you grill up seasoned pork steak to eat right off the fire, dipping it in a variety of sauces, which are brought out to your table. Of course, beer and soju are on hand as well to wash it all down. There are sandwiches, shrimp rolls, and many other choices to pick if soup is not your thing. Rickey brought us out some spicy chicken wings that set my mouth on fire, in a very good way, for no charge as a welcoming gesture. 리키씨, 당신은 실망시키지 않았어요. 포는 예상한 대로였고 맛 있고 조리도 잘 되었으며 수북한 토핑과 함께 나왔는데, 뷔페 스 타일의 바에서 더 가져올 수 있었다. 특히 포에 들어있는 숙주가 좋았는데 국물을 충분히 흡수할만큼 오래 놔뒀지만 여전히 아삭 했다. 음식의 양은 서양식 사이즈라고 할만큼 많았고, 빨리 나왔 으며 몹시 뜨거웠다. 정통 베트남 음식점과 다르게 남남은 고기 와 채소를 함께 즐길 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 뜨거운 숯을 테이블 로 가져오면 손님이 양념된 돼지고기 스테이크를 구워서 바로 다 양한 소스에 찍어먹을 수 있는데 소스도 서빙된다. 물론 음식을

넘긴 식도를 씻어낼 맥주와 소주가 함께 하는 것도 좋을 것이다. 포가 취향이 아니라면 샌드위치와 새우롤 외에도 다양한 음식이 있다. 리키씨는 환영의 표시로 무료로 매운 치킨윙을 가져다 주 었는데, 맛있게 아주 매운 맛이었다.

So, all things said, I give Ricky’s Nom Nom top marks for the taste, the atmosphere, the friendly and comfortable environment, and making us feel at home - even before we arrived. I really think if you like Vietnamese food with a little twist, this is the place for you. The staff is very pleasant and the price is right. Check it out as soon as you can, you won’t be disappointed. 할 말은 모두 했다. 리키씨의 남남에 맛, 분위기, 친절하고 편안한 환경 등등에 있어 최고점을 준다. 심지어 우리가 식당에 가기 전 부터 마치 집에 온 듯 한 느낌을 받았다. 만약 조금 독특한 베트남 음식을 좋아한다면 이 곳은 정말 당신을 위한 식당이다. 종업원 도 친절하고 가격도 적당하다.어서 가 보길 바란다. 절대 실망하 지 않을 것이다.

PHO - A blend of broth, rice noodles, herbs and meat, usually beef, but if you can find chicken, it’s well worth the trouble finding it. Pho soup is a common Vietnamese menu item. The soup is low in fat and supplies several key vitamins and minerals, but it can also be high in sodium. Pho soup can certainly fit into a healthy eating plan, especially if you prepare it at home and include the right toppings. 포(PHO, 베트남 쌀국수) - 쌀국수,국물, 허브, 고기가 함께 나 오는 음식으로, 고기는 보통 쇠고기이나 닭고기가 나오는 곳 을 찾을 수 있다면 고생해서 찾은 보람이 있을 것이다. 포의 국물은 베트남 식당 메뉴에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 메뉴이다. 지방 이 적고 주요 비타민과 미네랄을 함유하고 있지만 나트륨의 함량도 높다. 포는 확실히 건강한 음식에 속하는데 특히 집에 서 만들고 제대로 된 토핑을 넣는다면 확실히 그러하다.

We’ll do some warm-ups, cover the basics of improv, and play lots of silly games. We also focus on overcoming stage fright, thinking fast, accepting situations, and moving in a positive direction. A story slam is a live performance of true stories, told by the people who lived them, without the benefit of notes. A new topic is announced each month such as romantic disasters, I haven’t been the same since, I’ll never do that again, and I was really lucky. Feel free to put your name in the bucket and tell a story on the mic or just sit back and listen. There is also anonymous audience participation where everyone has the option to write down one to two sentences pertaining to the topic that will be read in between storytellers. The event is approximately two hours long with two 10 minutes intermissions on a Saturday from 7:30PM-9:30PM at Communes. Before you know it, you’ll be part of the Daegu family, too! Daegu Theatre Troupe 대구 씨어터 트룹 If you're hankering for a little creative escape, look no further than the Daegu Theatre Troupe (DTT). We cover an array of different performances from large scale productions to 24hr theatre projects. This season we will be hosting a Sweded Film Festival (see the movie “Be Kind Rewind” for reference) and an original work written by a family member of our expat community. Everyone is welcome to come out and participate. Whether it be acting, singing, dancing, directing, or producing, the sky’s the limit! Daegu Softball League 대구 소프트볼 리그 The Daegu Softball League is going on its 11th year in 2017 and it is perhaps the greatest community to be a part of in Korea. Daegu Devils FC 대구 데빌 FC We are an amateur football (soccer) team that have been playing together since 2001. We play regular 5-a-side football during the week, usually Wednesday night, and have recently started to play at the weekend too. Anyone is always welcome to come and play competitively or just for fun. We play full size 11-a-side matches and tournaments with other local teams as often as we can. The highlight of the year is the Ulsan Cup, where 16 teams from all over Korea play a tournament over a long weekend.

AWARE: Dive Against Debris - Daegu 어웨어 : 다이브 어게인스트 드브리스 - 대구 Dive against debris is an international effort to remove garbage from the marine environment. Our group is based in Daegu but the location of our activity is our adopted beach in Pohang. Volunteers gather to remove underwater debris from the location and log the data on the AWARE website. In 2016 when we began, not even 100 pieces of debris had been removed in S. Korea. We alone removed 1,200+ and lead the country in debris removal. Scuba/snorkeling experience is a plus, but not necessary. Anyone willing to spend a day at the beach is encouraged to join us. GREat Expectations Taking the GRE in Daegu

Living in Korea is fantastic, but for many foreigners it’s a weigh station before moving onto the next phase of life.

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about heading to grad school, but you still need to take the GRE. Of course with work contracts timing doesn’t always work out for test dates. Turns out, it’s actually super convenient to take the GRE right here in Daegu. And we’re here to show you how.

As far as preparing for the test, you’re on your own. My math game is… not strong. 한국에서 사는 일은 환상적이지만 많은 외국인들에게는 삶의 다 음 장으로 넘어가기 이전에 잠시 쉬어가는 곳이다.아마 여러분은 대학원을 가는 것에 대해 생각해 봤을 것이나 여전히 GRE시험 을 쳐야한다. 물론 일하는 시간이 항상 시험날짜에 맞지 않을 것 이다. 그러니 바로 여기 대구에서 GRE시험을 치는 것이 사실상 매우 편리하다는 것이다. 그래서 여기에 어떻게 할 수 있는지 알 려드리고자 한다. 시험을 준비하는 한해서 여러분은 스스로 해야 한다. 필자의 수학부분은 그다지 잘 안 되고 있다.

About the test 시험에 대해

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) offers the computer delivered GRE General Test at Keimyung University two to three times a month. You can take the test once every 21 days up to five times per calendar year. The exam is taken on a computer and you can receive your unofficial scores for the verbal and quantitative sections immediately.

Although the writing score takes a couple weeks to evaluate, it’s available to foreigners and Koreans and is given in English.

ETS는 컴퓨터로 계명대학교에서 한달에 두세번 정도 컴퓨터로 시험을 칠 수 있는 GRE 제너럴 테스트를 제공한다. 21일마다 한 번씩 1년에 최대 다섯번까지 응시할 수 있다. 이 시험은 컴퓨터로 시행하며 언어와 수리 부분의 비공식점수를 즉시 알 수 있다. 비 록 필기 점수를 평가하는데 두세주가 걸리지만 한국인과 외국인 이 응시가 가능하며 영어로 나온다.

Step one: Go to www.ets.org/gre In the middle column click on “Register for the test” 첫번째 단계 : www.est.org/gre 웹사이트로 가서 가운데에 있는 “Register for the test”를 클릭하면 된다.

Step two: Create an ETS account by clicking the “ETS account” link. And scroll down to the “Create or log in…” button. When registering be sure to register your name exactly as it appears on your passport. This is extremely important. Since, if you’re a foreigner, you will be taking the exam outside your country of residence a valid passport is the required ID. 두번째 단계 : “ETS account” 링크를 클릭하여 ETS 계정을 만들 어라.그리고 “Create or log in…” 버튼까지 스크롤을 내린다. 등 록을 할 때는 반드시 여권에 나와 있는 이름 그대로 등록해야 하 는데 이는 매우 중요한 내용이다. 왜냐하면 여러분이 외국인이라 면 이 시험을 외국에서 치게 되는 것이기 때문에 여러분의 유효 한 여권이 주최측에서 요구하는 신분증이다.

Step three: Check test center and seat availability by clicking the “Test centers and dates” link, then at the top of the next page click “View test centers, test dates, and seat availability”. Seats are on a first come first serve basis, so don’t wait too long if you have crucial application deadlines. 세번째 단계 : “Test centers and dates”를 클릭하고 다음 화 면의 위쪽에 있는 “View test centers, test dates, and seat availability” 클릭하여 시험장소와 남은 시험신청인수를 확인해 라. 신청은 선착순이기 때문에 만약 중요한 신청서 마감기한이 있다면 너무 오래 기다리지 마라.

Step four: Select the test type you wish to take, and choose a two month span. Click the date that works for you, and then click “Show test times”. It will tell you if seats are available and then click “register”. 네번째 단계 : 희망하는 시험 종류를 선택하고 2개월의 기간을 고르면 된다. 본인이 시험을 칠 수 있는 날짜를 선택하고 “Show test times”를 클릭해라. 그 때 시험을 칠 수 있는 지 시간을 확인 하고 “register”를 클릭하면 된다.

Preparing for the test

Test day

If you’re like me you haven’t done more than the most basic of math since high-school or the first year of college (which for me was a decade plus). So you might need some brushing up. The ETS site has some resources to help you prepare. Including free software, practice tests, and links to relevant (and free) Khan Academy courses that cover what math skills will be needed for the exam. 만약 여러분이 필자와 같은 입장이라면 고등학교나 대학교 1학 년(필자는 10년도 더 전에) 이후로 수학의 가장 기초적인 내용 그 이상을 다루지 않았을 것이다. 그래서 쌓인 먼지를 좀 털어내야 할 필요가 있다. ETS 사이트에는 무료 소프트웨어, 모의시험, 시 험에 필요한 수학내용을 담고 있는 칸 아카데미 코스시험(무료) 링크 등을 포함하여 시험 준비를 할 수 있는 자료들이 좀 있다.

The exam is held on the first floor of the IT center. Luckily it’s a straight shot from the main entrance. So take the green line to Keimyung University and go out exit 1. Walk straight until you reach the main entrance. It’s got big white columns. Hard to miss. Walk straight. You will see a sign for the GRE pointing left. But walk straight past it. These signs are guiding cars to the IT Center parking lot. You’ll wind up looping half the campus if you follow the signs. Just walk straight onto the brick walk way. It’s the first building on the right. Don’t be dissuaded by the closed gate over the door. The entrance is on the other side. 시험은 전산교육원의 1층에서 열리는데 다행스럽게도 정문으로 부터 직진상에 있다. 계명대학교로 2호선을 타고 1번 출구로 나 온다. 정문에 도착할 때까지 직진하면 되는데 거대한 하얀색의 기둥이 있어서 놓치지 않을 것이다. 정문을 들어서서 계속 직진 한다. 왼쪽을 가리키는 GRE 표지를 보게 될 것이지만 지나쳐서 계속 직진한다. 이 표지는 전산교육원의 주차장으로 차를 안내하 는 것이다. 만약 표지를 따라간다면 캠퍼스의 절반을 휘감아 올 라가게 될 것이다. 계속 벽돌로 된 보도를 따라 직진하면 오른쪽 에 나오는 첫번째 건물이다. 문 너머의 닫힌 게이트 때문에 멈추 지 않아도 된다. 정문은 반대편에 있다.

The exam typically starts at 10:00 am on the respective day. You should arrive no later than 9:30. But be sure to double check the times. You will have you sign a confidentiality agreement, and you will be checked with a metal detecting wand. When you check in you will be assigned a number. And will be called into the test center in that order. This staggered system prevents people from being at the same questions of the test at the same time. Once in the test area they will take your information and your photo then assign you to a test station. 시험은 보통 당일 오전 10시에 시작하고 9시 30분까지는 반 드시 도착해야 한다. 하지만 시간은 확실히 두 번 체크하도 록 해라. 그리고 기밀유지동의서에 사인을 하고 금속탐지기 기로 검사를 받을 것이다. 등록을 하면 번호를 받게되고 그 번호 순서대로 시험장으로 들어서게 된다. 이렇게 시차를 둔 시스템은 사람들이 시험의 같은 문제를 동시에 푸는 것을 방지한다. 시험장에서는 여러분의 정보와 사진을 수집하고 시험대에 배정해준다.

Make sure that phone is turned off. Expect to be at the test center four to five hours. I recommend going to the test center before the test day to make sure you know exactly where you are going and how long it takes you to get there. 만약 이 중 어떠한 물품이라도 지니고 있으면 가방 안에 넣 을 수 있고 감독관이 옆으로 치워둘 것이다. 핸드폰은 반드 시 꺼 놓도록 한다. 시험장에는 4~5시간 정도 있을 것이라고 예상하면 된다. 필자는 어디에 가야 하며 시험장에 가는데 얼마나 걸리는지 정확히 알기 위해 시험일 전 해당 장소에 가보기를 권한다.

Trap Neuter Release Every Life Matters

It’s not difficult to notice the tragic abundance of street cats in the alleys leading to our villas and apartments, in Daegu city and its surrounding areas. They scamper between trash heaps downtown, battle the bitter winters for the short duration of their lives, and birth litters of kittens who have very little hope of making it through the first year of their little lives. This is the heart-rending result of absent prevention and a problem seemingly so massive, that helping one cat might seem like it would hardly make a difference. However, there is a community of people who care for these often hated strays. They are part of a program called Trap Neuter Release (TNR) which successfully reduces the number of stray cats on the streets by catching, neutering and releasing them back into their urban territories. To cut straight to the point, I’m writing this in the hopes that more people, both foreign and Korean, would be encouraged to register and be part of this program. It can cost as little or as much as you like, and you would be part of something that is strategically bettering hundreds of lives, one cat at a time.

대구와 근교에서 우리가 사는 빌라나 아파트로 가는 골목길에서 비극적으로 버려진 길고양이들을 발견하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 고 양이들은 쓰레기 더미 사이를 날쌔게 돌아다니고 짧은 삶을 위해 매서운 겨울과 맞서 싸우고 가련한 삶의 첫해를 넘길 수 있는 희 망이 거의 없는 아기 고양이들을 많이 낳는다. 이는 예방방법이 없어서 생기는 가슴아픈 결과이며 외견상 문제가 매우 커서 한 마리의 고양이를 돕는 것은 그렇게 차이를 만들어내지는 않을 것 같다. 하지만 종종 주인없이 미움받는 동물들을 신경쓰는 사람들 의 모임이 있다. 그들은 TNR(Trap, Neuter, Release)이라는 프 로젝트의 일원으로 길거리에 있는 주인없는 고양이들을 잡아서 중성화시키고 다시 도시 속으로 놔줌으로써 개체 수를 줄여준다. 요점을 바로 짚어보자면, 필자는 한국인과 외국인 모두 더 많은 사람들이 이 프로그램에 등록에서 프로젝트의 일부분이 되어주 기를 바라는 희망 속에서 이 기사를 쓰고 있다. 여러분이 원하는 만큼 적게 혹은 많이 돈이 들고 전략적으로 한 번에 한 고양이씩, 수백마리의 삶을 개선시키는 일의 일원이 될 수 있다.

TNR arrived in Daegu in 2012, when, due to street cats being categorized as “abandoned pets” were promptly euthanized if they were found or caught. After a petition by the cat-lovers of Daegu was presented to the City Municipality, TNR was introduced. According to volunteers today, it is successful although still relatively unknown and under supported.

TNR은 길고양이가 발견되거나 잡히면 “버려진 애완동물”을 분 류되어 즉시 안락사되던 2012년에 대구에 퍼지기 시작했다. 대 구의 고양이 애호가들이 지방 자치당국에 청원한 후에 TNR이 소 개되었다. 현재 자원봉사자들에 따르면 여전히 비교적 잘 알려져 있지 않고 지원을 많이 받지는 않지만 성공적이라고 한다.

The process is very simple. The cost is zero. After registration with your local Gu office, you will receive the trap and a briefing after about 1 to 2 weeks from your registration date. Your job is to place a good-smelling (according to cats) food into the trap, something like fish or fried chicken, something irresistible, along with some water. Then, carefully hide the trap in a place that won’t be found easily, and maybe attach some documentation reminding anyone who does come across it that it is part of a government-funded program to reduce the number of street cats, and that the poisoning and hunting of cats is illegal. Gwiran Kim, a long standing worker and then volunteer for Korea Animal Protection Association (KAPS), warns also never to lose the trap or leave food and water too exposed. 과정은 매우 간단하며 돈은 들지 않는다. 여러분이 살고 있는 해 당 구청에 등록을 하고 나면 덫과 등록을 한 지 1~2주가 지난 후 에 브리핑을 받게 될 것이다. 여러분의 일은 고양이들이 저항할 수 없는 생선이나 튀긴 닭등 (고양이에게) 냄새가 좋은 음식을 물 과 함께 덫 안에 두는 것이다. 그리고 쉽게 찾을 수 없는 곳에 덫 을 조심스럽게 숨기고 이 덫을 찾는 사람들에게 길고양이의 수를 줄이기 위한 정부 지원의 일환이며 길고양이에게 독극물을 주거 나 사냥하는 것은 불법임을 알려주는 글을 남겨두면 될 것이다. 김귀란씨는 오랜 세월 동안 이 일을 했고 한국동물보호협회의 자 원봉사자인데 덫을 잃어버리거나 음식과 물을 너무 오래 두지 말 라고 조언을 했다.

Unfortunately, many Koreans still believe that cat meat helps with joint health, a devastating myth that, despite it being illegal, still leads to cats being hunted and sold in markets as medicinal meat. Feeding cats openly can also be a major point of contention between neighbors who believe feeding increases the cat problem, and such conflict can bring a swift end to any attempts to help them.

Cats have been poisoned before, so proceed with caution.

regarding the need for this program and the ways in which it can benefit the human communities as well as the feline ones. Stick up a few fliers with information in Korean. If you can, talk to people. A good rapport is essential in carrying out this work, as well as the knowledge of legalities in case any threats are thrown around. 불행히도 많은 한국인들은 아직도 고양이 고기가 관절에 좋다는 충격적인 미신을 믿고 있으며, 이런 사실은 불법임에도 불구하 고 고양이를 사냥하여 약용고기로 시장에서 팔리는 결과로 이어 진다. 고양이에게 공개적으로 밥을 주는 일 역시 먹이를 주면 고 양이로 인해 생기는 문제가 더 늘어난다고 믿는 사람들과 논쟁 의 요점이 되기도 한다. 그리고 그러한 갈등은 길고양이를 돕고 자 하는 어떠한 도움도 급히 끝내게 된다. 고양이는 이전부터 독 극물을 먹고 죽어왔기에 프로젝트는 조심스럽게 진행된다. 최상 의 접근 방법은 이 프로그램의 필요성과 고양이들뿐만 아니라 인 간공동체에도 도움이 될 수 있는 방법에 대해 이웃을 교육시키는 일일 것이다. 한국어로 된 정보가 적힌 몇몇 전단지를 붙일 수도 있다. 만약 가능하다면 사람들에게 이야기를 해도 된다. 이 일을 해 나가는데는 어떠한 위협행위가 벌어지는 경우에 대한 법률적 인 지식은 물론 좋은 유대관계가 필수적이다.

After setting up the trap, it should be carefully monitored so that a trapped cat can be passed onto caring hands as soon as possible. After a cat is trapped, notify the vet or TNR service, and they will come to collect the animal. The vet sends through the hospital information and pictures to you, and informs you on of the release date, which will take place at the capture site after a few days recovery. 덫을 설치하고 나서는 고양이가 가능한 한 빨리 돌봄의 손길에 넘겨지게 조심스럽게 관찰해야 한다. 고양이가 덫에 걸리면 수의 사나 TNR센터에 알리고, 그러면 고양이를 데려가기 위해서 사람 이 온다. 수의사는 병원의 정보와 사진을 여러분께 드릴 것이고 수술 후 몇 일간의 회복기간 후에 잡힌 장소에서 방사할 날짜를 알려줄 것이다.

In her experience, Kathy Kyoung-min Kim said that she was more worried about the surgery than the release. But, with the information provided, she was able to research the hospital assigned to her trapped cat, make calls and visits to ensure everything was going well. She also was able to pay for a course of antibiotics for a sick trapped animal, and did so out of choice. 김경민씨의 경험에 따르면 방사보다 수술에 대해 더 걱정을 많이 했다고 한다. 하지만 받은 정보 덕분에 김씨가 잡은 고양이가 배 정된 병원에 대한 조사와 연락, 모든 것이 괜찮은지 확인할 수 있 도록 병원에 방문하는 것이 가능했다. 김씨는 또한 덫에 걸린 아 픈 동물들을 위한 항생제 프로그램에 대해서 지불할 수도 있었 는데 스스로의 선택에 따라 그렇게 했다.

For an animal lover, releasing an animal back into a dangerous urban environment is not ideal, and comes with a lot of guilt and worry. However, volunteers stated that they truly believed this is the most humane thing for the street cats, for which there are just simply not enough homes and people to rehabilitate them. The benefits are obviously tremendous. Not only are adult cats receiving medical care and some good meals along with their operations, but future generations of kittens are being spared the brutality of life on the streets. Furthermore, night time calling from cats on heat drastically decreases, keeping the neighbors happy. 동물애호가들에게는 위험한 도시환경 속으로 다시 동물을 되돌 려보내는 것이 이상적인 방법이 아니며 많은 죄책감과 걱정이 뒤 따르기도 한다. 그러나 자원봉사자들은 이 것이 단순히 다시 품 어줄 집과 사람들이 없는 길고양이들에게 진정으로 가장 인도적 인 것이라고 믿고 있다고 말했다. 명확하게 장점은 매우 많다. 성 인 고양이들이 의료적 관리와 수술과 함께 양질의 식사를 받을 뿐만 아니라 미래 세대인 새끼 고양이가 길거리 삶의 잔혹함을 겪지 않아도 되게끔 해준다. 더 나아가 발정기의 고양이가 밤시 간에 울어대는 것을 급격히 줄여주며 이웃들을 행복하게 해준다.

Gwiran Kim suggests that for foreigners who would like to become a TNR volunteer, try call the Gu office yourself first, as it is likely they will be able to speak English, and if not, ask a Korean friend to help. If you can, research the hospital and monitor the care of the cats after their surgery, making it known there is a human that the hospital needs to be accountable to. Treat TNR as a commitment, and be careful not to trap during extremely hot or cold times of the year. Not only does TNR reduce the number of cats on the street, and provide care for one street cat at a time, but through the acknowledgment and spread of this program, so the misconceptions and animosity towards street cats can also being broken down. Below are the numbers you can call for your local Gu office. 김귀란씨는 TNR의 자원봉사자고 되고 싶은 외국인들에게 구청 에 먼저 전화해보라고 제안한다. 구청사람이 영어로 이야기 할 수도 있고 그렇지 않다면 도와줄 한국인 친구에서 도움을 요청할 수 있다. 만약 가능하다면 병원을 알아보고 수술 후의 고양이에 대한 케어를 지켜봐라. 이는 병원이 설명을 해야할 사람이 있다 는 것을 알게하는 것이다. The bitter weather might make you feel like hibernating indoors; however, in doing so, you’d be missing out on some of the country’s celebrated lighting festivals. As winter draws to a close though, there is only about one place where you can still catch such a glittering showcase - The Garden of Morning Calm. Luckily this is not only the biggest festival of lights in Korea, but is also a simple day trip from Seoul. So grab your KTX tickets, adorn your cozy hats and scarves, embrace the seasonal temperatures, and venture outdoors for a weekend that is sure to dazzle and delight!

But make your arrangements quick, this extravagant display goes dark on 26 March. 혹독한 날씨가 실내에서 동면모드로 들어가게 만들지만 그렇게 된다면 유명한 한국의 빛축제를 놓치게 될 것이다. 겨울이 서서히 물러가는 때이니 아직 반짝거리는 전시회를 볼 수 있는 곳은 오직 한 군데만이 남았다. 바로 아침고요수목원이다. 다행히도 한국에 서 가장 큰 빛축제인데다 서울에서는 당일여행이 되는 곳이다. 그 러니 KTX 티켓을 끊고 따뜻한 모자와 목도리를 소중히 챙겨서 겨 울 온도를 감내하도록 해라. 그리고 황홀하고 즐거울 것이 확실한 주말 동안 야외로 꼭 나가보자! 하지만 서둘러 계획을 짜야 하는데 이 화려한 전시회는 3월 26일 어둠 속으로 사라지기 때문이다.

The Garden of Morning Calm is a quaint arboretum nestled in pristine countryside just east of Seoul. Every winter evening, the stark gardens are transformed into a Disneyland like display of multi-colored lights. Through the gently rolling landscape you can witness various themed displays within each section of the garden. 아침고요수목원은 서울의 동쪽, 자연 그대로의 시골 지역에 자리 잡은 운치 있는 수목원이다. 매해 겨울 저녁이면, 황량한 정원이 다양한 불빛으로 디즈니랜드 같은 모습으로 바뀐다. 완만하게 펼 쳐진 풍경 내에 있는 정원의 각 구역에서 다양한 내용을 주제로 한 전시물을 볼 수 있다.

Lighting Festival 빛 축제

My friends and I choose to visit during the Lunar New Year break. When we arrived at dusk, the lights were already turned on and the crowds were thickly gathered. There is a recommended course, but I choose to wander aimlessly and first diverted left towards the blue-lit swinging Cloud Bridge. Not for the faint-hearted, this bridge sways violently when numerous people are on it, so I quickly traversed across and found myself in the Bonsai Garden. 필자와 친구는 설날 휴가 동안 수목원에 가 보기로 했다. 해가 질 무렵에 도착했을 때 이미 불빛이 들어와 있었고 사람들이 빽빽히 모여들고 있었다. 추천코스가 있었지만 목적지 없이 그냥 돌아다 니기로 했고, 첫번째 갈림길에서는 푸른 빛으로 흔들리는 구름다 리를 향해 왼쪽으로 갔다. 용기가 없는 사람들에게 말해주자면 많 은 사람들이 올라서 있을 때면 구름다리가 난폭하게 흔들린다. 그 래서 필자는 급히 다리를 건너 분재 정원에 들어서게 되었다.

Here several trees had been transformed into oversized flowers of fluorescent green and sparkling turquoise. My favorite spectacle was the mesmerizing cobalt blue tree that glittered with thousands of lights from its base to the very tip of every branch. The Bonsai trees were equally adorned with appropriately neon green tops and yellow bark looking like exploding mushrooms.

여기에 있는 여러 나무들은 형광 녹색과 반짝거리는 청록색으로 된 특대 사이즈의 꽃으로 변해 있었다. 필자가 가장 좋아한 것은 땅에서 각각의 나뭇가지 끝까지 수천개의 전구가 빛나고 있어 넋 을 잃게 만드는 코발트 블루빛 나무였다. 분재 나무는 적당하게 형 광녹색으로 된 윗부분과 노란색으로 된 나무껍질로 똑같이 장식 되었는데 마치 커져가는 버섯같아 보였다.

After leaving this area, I found myself winding up a path where multi-colored umbrellas of bright green, baby pink, sky blue, and purple dangled overhead. The trail steered me to a serene, snowy, hillside pasture where the tree trunks were wrapped in glistening white ten foot high ‘vines’ and dotted around were the yellow silhouettes of giraffes, elephants and deer. Perched high on the hill was a petite chapel, flanked on either side with snow white angels. Quiet and peace filled the wintry air. 여기를 지나고 나서 밝은 녹색, 연분홍, 하늘색, 보라색 등 다양한 색깔의 우산이 머리 위로 달려 있는 꼬불꼬불한 길을 가게 되었다. 이 길은 고요하고 눈이 쌓인 비탈길의 평지로 안내했다. 이 곳에는 나무의 몸통이 3미터 높이의 반짝이는 하얀 덩굴로 감겨져 있고 주위에 점점이 널려져 있었던 것은 노란색으로 된 기린, 코끼리, 사슴 등의 모양이었다. 높이 솟은 언덕 위에는 작은 예배당이 있었 는데 양 옆에 순백의 천사들이 있었다. 고요함과 평화로움이 겨울 의 대기를 가득 채웠다.

Venturing back down the hill, I was transported to yet a different landscape. Before me - spread across a wide open field - was a sea of blue, where on this virtual ocean a lonely sailboat was making its voyage. To add to the romantic setting, wistful music was being piped out into the crisp evening air. 언덕 아래로 다시 내려오자 매우 다른 풍경으로 옮겨져 왔다. 내 앞은 매우 넓게 펼쳐진 들판에 펼펴진 푸른 바다였고, 보기에 바다 인 그 위에 외로운 배 한 척이 항해를 하고 있었다. 여기에 로맨틱 한 설정을 더하기 위해 아련한 음악이 산뜻한 저녁 공기로 울려퍼 지고 있었다.

Around the corner was my favorite area - the Sunken Garden - where an explosion of color covered every inch the two acre landscape. The ground was carpeted in pink dots of light and sprouting up into the landscape were balls of colors from navy blue, red, mint, orange and moss green resembling a bunch of giant chupa chups lollipops. It looked like a grand fireworks display frozen in time. 모퉁이를 돌아서 나온 곳이 필자가 가장 좋아하는 곳인 하경정원 으로 2,400평의 대지를 색이 폭발하듯 촘촘히 물들여놓았다. 땅은 분홍색 빛으로 점점이 카펫을 깔아놓았고, 땅위로 솟아올라 풍경 속으로 들어온 것은 한 묶음의 거대한 추파춥스를 닮은 군청색, 빨 간색, 민트색, 주황색, 이끼색의 공들이었다. 마치 딱 시간에 맞춰 장대한 불꽃놀이를 얼려놓은 듯 했다.

The whole experience was dazzling, with more to discover than I had envisioned. So, I’d recommend at least 90 minutes to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere, more if you plan breaking up your viewing with a cup of tea or dinner.

The Gardens are spectacular, but you might as well leave Seoul early and join the Gapyeong Tourist Shuttle Bus to take in the other attractions nearby, including Nami Island and Petite France. 수목원은 장관이었다. 하지만 서울을 일찍 떠나서 가평 관광버스 를 타고 남이섬과 쁘띠 프랑스 등 근처의 다른 관광지로도 갈 수 있을 것이다.

Nami Island is a minuscule, 5km in circumference isle that is considered an independent republic. This nature lovers paradise is full of beautiful poplar tree lined dirt roads and is home to many artisans. Wondering around the often snow covered wonderland - visitors can pet ostriches, observe ice sculpting demonstrations, stroll through the telephone wire free landscape, photograph the outdoor sculptures, and partake in some ‘eye shopping’. 남이섬은 매우매우 작은 섬인데, 독립적인 공화으로 간주되는 둘 레가 5km인 섬이다. 이 자연을 사랑하는 사람들의 파라다이스는 흙길에 줄지어 서 있는 아름다운 포플러 나무로 가득하고 많은 공 예가들의 터전이기도 하다. 종종 눈으로 덮이는 원더랜드를 돌아 다니면서 타조에게 먹이주기, 얼음 조각을 하는 것 보기, 전화선 이 없는 섬 산책하기, 야외 조각물 촬영하기, 아이쇼핑 등등을 할 수 있다.

To get to the island, either take a five minute ferry ride, or for the more adventurous at heart - zip line over! I highly recommend the later. The 0.6mile (940m) long, 25m/h (40km/h) course begins at the top of an 80 meter high tower.

As the doors open, you are released from the platform to spectacular 180 degree views of the river below and the snow capped island in the distance. A very unique way to cross. 남이섬에 가려면 유람선을 5분 동안 타거나 더 모험심이 강한 사 람들은 집라인으로 갈 수도 있다! 필자는 두번째 방법을 적극 추천 한다. 길이 940m에 시속 40km인 코스는 80m 높이의 꼭대기에 서 출발한다. 문이 열리면 플랫폼에서 아래에 펼쳐진 강과 멀리 있 는 눈으로 덮인 섬의 환상적인 경치를 180도로 조망할 수 있는 곳 으로 떨어지게 된다. 강을 건너는 아주 독특한 방법이다.

Further down the road is Petite France - a French inspired village where visitors can experience European culture in Korea. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to stop, but it looked intriguing! 길 한참 아래에 있는 것은 쁘띠 프랑스인데 방문객들이 한국에서 유럽문화를 경험할 수 있는 프랑스풍 마을이다. 안타깝게도 우리 는 그 곳에 들러 볼 시간이 없었지만 아주 재미있어 보였다.

Devour some Chuncheon Dakgalbi 춘천 닭갈비 먹방

Before heading to the Garden of Morning Calm, I’d recommend a warming bowl of Dakgalbi - the speciality dish of Chuncheon - from one of the numerous restaurants near the ferry. This simmering dish consists of marinated diced chicken, sliced cabbage, sweet potato, and ttekobokki rice cake all coated in a chili pepper paste based sauce which is stir-fried on a gas grill at your table. Halfway through eating, order a bowl of rice, which comes with seaweed and bean sprouts, to add to the pot. It incorporates another dimension to the dish, and fills you up! A perfect meal before heading to the gardens, especially as the dining options onsite are very limited. 아침고요수목원에 가기 전에 선착장 근처에 있는 수많은 식당 중 한 곳에서 춘천의 명물인 닭갈비를 한 그릇 먹고 가기를 추천한다. 닭갈비는 고추장으로 만든 소스에 뒤덮인 깍둑썰기한 양념 닭고 기와 채썬 양배추, 고구마, 떡으로 되어 있으며 식탁에 있는 불판 에서 볶는다. 반쯤 먹고 나면 김과 콩나물이 함께 나오는 밥 한 공 기를 주문해서 불판에 넣는다. 이러면 요리가 다른 차원의 것으로 변하고 배를 빵빵하게 채워줄 것이다. 특히 수목원에서는 식사거 리가 많지 않아서 수목원에 가기 전에 먹을 수 있는 완벽한 식사이 다.

Don’t Forget, Koh Samet When people think of the beautiful beaches of Thailand, the most popular names to pop up are Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan-where the famous Full Moon Party occurs every month. These are fantastic islands, but what if you happen to be on a time crunch or a limited budget? Well, just four hours away is an amazing island with gorgeous white sand beaches, crystal clear blue water and plenty of places to stay to fit any traveler’s budget. Koh Samet or Koh Samed has everything you need to enjoy a wonderful holiday without having to waste too much time on the road.

Koh Samet is the preferred island getaway for local Bangkok residents, it has all the perks of the more popular islands with a different kind of charm. My friend suggested we visit his favorite resort on Koh Samet, since we only had a week vacation. And let’s be honest, the last thing you want to do

when you have a short vacation is spend time traveling. I was a bit skeptical at first, but once our speedboat dropped us off right in front of our resort, I knew we had made the right decision. 사람들이 태국의 아름다운 해변가를 생각할 때며 머릿속에 떠오 르는 가장 인기있는 곳들은 코피피, 코사무이, 매달 풀문파티가 열 리는 코팡안이다. 이 곳들은 환상적인 섬들이지만 만약 시간이 부 족하고 예산이 적을 경우는 어떻게 할 것인가? 아름다운 백사장, 수정처럼 맑고 푸른 물, 모든 여행자들의 예산에 맞출 수 있는 숙 박시설이 가득한 멋진 섬이 네 시간 정도 떨어진 곳에 있다. 코 사 멧 혹은 코 사메드는 많은 시간을 길에서 허비하지 않고 멋진 휴가 를 즐길 수 있는데 필요한 모든 것이 있다. 코사멧은 방콕사람들에 게는 휴가지로 인기가 있는 곳이며 이색적인 매력으로 더 인기있 는 섬의 모든 즐거움을 갖고 있다. 친구가 코사멧에 있는 가장 좋 아하는 리조트에 가보라고 추천했다. 왜냐하면 우리에게는 겨우 1주일의 휴가가 주어졌기 때문이었다. 그리고 솔직해져보자. 휴 가가 짧을 때 우리가 가장 하기 싫은 것은 시간이 드는 여행이다. 처음에 필자는 회의적이었지만 우리가 탄 스피드보트가 리조트 바로 앞에 내려주자 우리가 옳은 결정을 했다는 것을 알았다. http://www.daegucompass.com

Resort 리조트

We stayed at one of the oldest resorts on the island called Tubtim Resort (http://www.tubtimresort.com).

This resort has your basic hut and fans for 1000 baht a night with a hot shower or AC room with a fan and breakfast buffet for 2500 baht a night with a hot shower.

We opted for the AC room with a fan, but found that we turned on the AC once, during the 7 days we stayed there. The huts are not right on the beac h, but close enough that the ocean sang us to sleep each night.

The rooms have a small flat screen TV, memory foam bed, a couple of small tables and shelves and a small refrigerator. The bathrooms are not fabulous, but are clean enough for the price you are paying. Housekeeping will come if you leave your key at reception at the beginning of the day. Overall, for the price we paid, we were happy with the room. There might have been cheaper options (check tripadvisor.com) available on the island, but the hospitality made up for some of the rooms shortcomings. Plus, the location was at the end of the long row of beaches and close enough to the other side of the island, which was only 15 minutes away by foot. The restaurant was good, their curry was tasty and tom yum was creamier than I usually have it, but still quite delicious. The prices were what you would expect from a 3-star resort, 110 baht for chicken pad thai, a bit expensive, but not by much. The breakfast buffet was a bit disappointing, but the made to order omelets were great. The breakfast is served in the main reception building and the beach restaurant is open with tables right on the sand. The servers bring cushions over when you are seated. Ask for a mosquito coil and bring some repellant, as they can be annoying during the evening.

Also, there are friendly resort dogs roaming around, so just a heads up for those who might be afraid of them.

Overall, I would recommend Tubtim Resort to those looking for a quick island getaway for those short week vacation trips.

우리는 섬에서 가장 오래된 리조트 중 하나인 툽팁 리조트(http:// www.tubtimresort.com)에서 묵었다. 이 리조트는 온수가 나오 고 선풍기가 있는 기본적인 오두막이 하룻밤에 1,000바트, 혹은 온수가 나오고 선풍기 및 조식뷔페가 포함되면 2,500바트였다. 우 리는 선풍기와 함께 에어컨이 있는 방을 선택했지만 7일 동안 지 내면서 에어컨은 결국 한 번 밖에 틀지 않았다. 오두막은 해변 바 로 옆에 있지는 않았지만 매일밤 바다가 불러주는 자장가를 들을 수 있을 정도로 가까웠다. 방에는 작은 평면 TV, 메모리폼 침대, 탁 자 및 선반 두개, 작은 냉장고가 있었다. 화장실은 매우 좋은 건 아 니었지만 가격에 걸맞게 깔끔했다. 방청소는 하루가 시작될 때 리 셉션에 열쇠를 맡겨두면 해준다. 전반적으로 우리가 지불한 가 격을 생각하면 방에 만족했다. 섬에는 더 저렴한 곳도 있겠지만 (tripadvisor.com를 확인해봐라.) 리조트의 접대가 방의 단점을 보완해주었다. 게다가 위치가 기나긴 해변의 마지막이며 섬의 반 대편에도 가까워서 걸어가면 15분 정도가 걸렸다. 식당도 좋았다. 카레가 맛있었고 똠양꿍은 보통 먹던 것보다 더 크리미 했지만 여 전히 맛있었다. 가격은 3성급 리조트에서 예상할 수 있는 정도인 데, 치킨 팟타이가 110바트로 조금 비싸지만 지나치지는 않다. 조 식 뷔페는 조금 실망스러웠지만 주문하면 만들어주는 오믈렛는 굉장히 좋았다. 조식은 본관에서 먹을 수 있고, 모래사장 위에 테 이블을 둔 해변가의 식당이 개방된다. 서버가 자리에 앉을 때 방석 을 가져다준다. 저녁에는 모기가 성가시기 때문에 모기향을 부탁 하고 벌레 퇴치제를 가져와라. 또한 리조트에 있는 친근한 개들이 돌아다니고 있으니 개를 무서워하는 사람들은 조심하기 바란다. 전반적으로 필자는 짧은 휴가 여행을 위해 섬에서 잠시 휴가를 보 내려는 사람들에게 툽팀 리조트를 추천하는 바이다.

Transportation 교통편

The easiest way to get there is to take a mini-bus (van) from Ekamai bus station through one of the tour companies that will drop you directly off at pier in Ban Phe. This ride usually takes between 2-3 hours depending on the traffic.

From there, it’s just a short 15-20 minute speedboat ride depending on where your resort is on the island. P.N. Travel (+66.0.3865.3307 - sadly they do not have a website) charges 200 baht one-way for the mini-bus from Bangkok to Ban Phe and then 350 baht one-way for the speedboat. The main ferry from Ban Phe to the ferry port on Koh Samet is considerably cheaper, but runs on a schedule, where as the speedboat will leave immediately if there are enough people. Make sure to wear shorts or a swimsuit because you’ll be stepping off the speedboat into knee high water.

The island is small enough that you can easily walk from one side to the other and up the coast to all the beaches in about an hour. You can rent scooters, but it really is not necessary. When it’s time to head back to Bangkok, just have your resort or hotel call the company and a speedboat will come and pick you up. Total time from Ekamai bus station in Bangkok to your resort will be about 4 hours total, which is much better than an overnight bus, expensive plane ticket or a train-then bus-then ferry-then tuk tuk to your resort.

Koh Samet 코 사멧

The island has several magnificent beaches to explore and they are all within walking distance for the most part. The northern part of the island is the most developed, with the southern part of the island reserved for high-end resorts.

The eastern side of the island experiences the most wind, which brings stronger currents and waves. The western side of the island is sheltered and peaceful, which makes it ideal for chilling out and relaxing as the bay at Ao Prao beach provides almost a glass-like texture to the water. Ao Prao only has 3 resorts on its beach, the beach chairs are reserved for resort guests only, but the left side of the beach is open to the public. There is a great restaurant (The Buzz) though that provides comfy bean bags and an excellent view of the sunset.

코 사멧에는 둘러볼 수 있는 여러 개의 훌륭한 해변가가 있고 대부 분은 다 걸어갈 수 있는 거리에 있다. 섬의 북쪽이 가장 발달되어 있고 남쪽은 최고급 리조트가 차지하고 있다. 동쪽에서는 바람이 많이 부는데 강항 조류와 파도를 만들어낸다. 서쪽은 비바람이 없 고 평화롭다. 그리고 아오 프라오 해변의 만이 거의 유리와도 같은 느낌의 물을 갖고 있어 한가로이 시간을 보내고 쉬는 데에 가장 이 상적인 곳이다. 아오 프라오는 해변가에 리조트가 세 개 밖에 없고 해변가의 의자는 리조트 손님 전용이지만 해변의 왼쪽편은 공공 해변가이다. 편안한 빈백과 멋진 일몰을 갖고 있는 좋은 식당(더 버즈)이 있기도 하다.

On the eastern side, the side we stayed on, has a long stretch of beaches. Tubtim resort is on Ao Tubtim, which has only two resorts and is at the end of the main northern beaches, almost in the middle of the island. This provides for minimal foot traffic, although the beach vendors do pass through selling the typical henna tattoo, fresh seafood, beach towels and sarees. The best beach during the day if you want to avoid loud music and craziness that is usually associated with island paradises is the beach Ao Phai or next to Ao Phai. It is deemed “silent beach” and is run by a local lady who provides beach chairs. Silent beach has a special rule though, no drinking or smoking. The beach vendors still come through, but are less aggressive and seem to only

stop if you are really interested in what they have to offer.

This was our favorite beach on the eastern side of the island because it almost felt as if you had washed up on shore to a deserted island--almost. 우리가 지냈던 동쪽편에는 해수욕장이 길게 펼쳐져 있다. 툽팀 리 조트는 아오 툽팀에 있는데 이곳은 리조트가 두 개 밖에 없고 북부 의 주요 해수욕장 끝에 있고 이는 섬의 거의 한 가운데이다. 비록 헤나 문신, 신선한 해산물, 비치 타올, 사리 등을 판매하는 해변가 의 좌판을 통과해서 가야하지만 최소한으로 걸어다닐 수 있다. 시 끄러운 음악과 섬의 파라다이스와 관련된 광란에서 피하고 싶다 면 낮시간대의 최고 해수욕장은 아오파이 해수욕장이나 그 옆이 다.

If you look on Tripadvisor, you’ll see that Samed Villa resort restaurant is listed as the number 1 restaurant on the island for price and quality. We had to try it, along with the Funky Monkey. Both restaurants live up to their billing. It might sound strange, but after 6 days of Thai food, we had to try the restaurant at Le Vimarn Cottages & Spa. If you want some mind-blowing gourmet Italian food, this is a must go to restaurant. Everything is handmade and fresh. Simply put, it’s the most unusual place to find an extraordinary Italian restaurant.

만약 트립어드바이저를 살펴본다면 사메드 빌라 리조트 식당이 가격과 양적인 면에서 섬에 있는 식당들 중 1등으로 올라가 있는 것을 보게 될 것이다. 우리는 펑키 멍키도 가고 이 곳에도 가 봤어 야 했다. 두 식당 모두 가격표에 부응하는 곳이었다. 이상하게 들 릴 지도 모르겠지만 6일 동안 태국 음식을 먹고 나니 레 비만 커티 지 & 스파에 있는 식당에 가야한 했다. 만약 정신을 잃을 정도로 맛있는 이탈리아 음식을 먹고 싶다면 이 곳에 반드시 가봐야 한다. 모든 음식이 수제이고 신선하다. 쉽게 이야기하면 이 곳은 대단한 이탈리안 식당을 찾기에는 가장 색다른 곳이다.

Koh Samet is a fabulous place for a short holiday excursion.

Would I want to stay on the island for longer than a week, probably not, but for a week or less, this island is the perfect place to unwind. So next time you think about that Southeast Asian holiday, don’t forget Koh Samet. 코 사멧은 짧은 휴가 여행을 즐기기에 멋진 곳이다. 1주일보다는 더 길게 섬에서 지내고 싶었다. 아닐 수도 있겠다. 하지만 1주일 정 도는 괜찮다. 이 섬은 긴장을 풀고 지내기에 완벽한 곳이다. 그러 니 다음번에 동남아시아에서의 휴가를 생각한다면 코 사멧을 잊 지 않길 바란다.

Bali is a small piece of paradise in the Indian sea. It is filled with volcanic mountains, scenic rice paddies, beautiful beaches if you go off the beaten path and of course food to die for. When I was asking around for advice on whether to go to Bali, I would get conflicting advice from friends. They either loved it or hated it. Similar to what I would hear about Phuket or the typical places most of us expats have been to, I would hear that Bali was overrun with tourists; that it wasn’t worth going to for a honeymoon or even just a trip.

I am so glad I listened to those few who have fallen in love with the place, but you need to go off the beaten path to truly appreciate this beautiful place. 발리는 인도양이 품고있는 파라다이스의 작은 조각이다. 화산 과 경치가 좋은 논, 다져진 길을 벗어나면 있는아름다운 해변, 물 론 목숨을 걸만 음식도 가득한 곳이다. 발리에 갈 지에 대한 의견 을 주위에 물어봤을 때 친구들로부터 다른 이야기를 들을 것 같았 다. 사람들은 발리는 매우 좋아하거나 싫어했다. 대부분의 대구 외 국인들이 가본 푸켓이나 그런 섬들에 대해 듣는 이야기와 비슷하 게 발리가 여행객들 천지라는 이야기라는 이야기를 들을 것 같았

A Cooking Class fit for Kings 왕을 위한 요리 교실 We caught a red eye from Korea last December, arriving pretty late in Denpasar. Wanting to sleep for at least a few hours, we came prepared and booked a 6-hour hotel room at the transit hotel 5 minutes from the airport. Our morning did not start as planned. The cooking class we had booked did not pick us up from the hotel. I was stressing out, but the kind gentleman at the front desk didn’t let us down. He kindly drove us to the cooking class at the Anika Guesthouse, a mere 5 minutes from the hotel. Confusion abound as we arrived, they had no idea who we were but

eventually realized we had booked with an external third party website (though they annoyed me, they did save us a lot of money). Apologizing, they offered us morning tea and delicious banana fritters with palm sugar as we waited for another scheduled class to accommodate us. 우리는 지난 12월에 덴판사르에 꽤 늦게 도착해서 야간 비행 편을 잡았다. 적어도 몇 시간이라도 자고 싶어서 공항에서 5분 거리에 있는 환승 호텔에 있는 6시간짜리 방을 예약하기로 했 다. 아침은 계획대로 시작되지 않았다. 우리가 예약했던 요리 교실이 호텔로 데리러 오지 않았다. 스트레스를 받았지만 프 론트 데스크에 계시던 신사분이 우리가 풀죽게 내버려두지 않 았다. 친절하게도 호텔에서 겨우 5분 밖에 안 걸리는 아니카 게스트하우스에 태워다 주셨던 것이다. 도착하자 혼란이 더 했는데, 요리교실의 사람들은 우리가 누구인지 몰랐고 결국에 우리가 외부의 대행 웹사이트에서 예약한 것을 알아냈다(이렇 게 그 웹사이트가 필자를 괴롭혔지만 돈은 많이 아낄 수 있었 다.) 그들은 사과를 하고 우리에게 맞춘 다른 강좌를 기다리는 동안 모닝티와 팜 슈거가 뿌려진 맛있는 바나나 튀김을 내 주 었다.

The class itself was one of my favorite experiences in Bali. We had a morning market tour, where all spices and ingredients were explained. Then we headed back to the guesthouse to start our class. We made tofu fritters, beef in Balinese sauce, roasted eggplant sambal and a whole array of other dishes. The guesthouse offers 3 different menus depending on what day you take the class. We ate like kings, and I was utterly satisfied when we finished. This being the first experience of Balinese food, it was hard not to compare it to every other meal we had on our trip. The food was just utterly divine. 요리교실 자체는 발리에서 했던 가장 좋았던 경험 중 하나였 다. 우리는 아침시장투어를 했는데, 이곳에서 모든 종류의 향 신료와 재료들에 대한 설명을 해 주었다. 그리고 나서 요리교 실을 시작하기 위해 게스트하우스로 돌아왔다. 우리는 두부 프리터, 발리식 소스를 얹은 쇠고기, 구운 가지 삼발과 다양한 반찬들을 만들었다. 게스트 하우스는 요일에 따라 세가지 종 류의 메뉴를 제공한다. 우리는 왕처럼 먹었고 모든 과정이 끝 났을 때는 완벽히 만족했다. 이 것이 발리 음식을 처음으로 경 험하는 것이어서 매 식사 때마다 이 것과 비교하지 않기가 어 려웠다. 그 음식은 정말 훌륭했다.

Peaceful Beaches 평화로운 해변가 We planned our trip taking into consideration that some of these activities or tours would drive you back to your hotel. I hate dealing with taxis and bartering, things like Kakao Taxi make life too convenient. The free rides were a wonderful perk when choosing activities and locations around the island. The Anika Guesthouse did not disappoint and took us half an hour away to Sanur, where we had booked the safest but more expensive Rocky Fast speedboat to Nusa Lembongan Island. The main reason we were arriving there was to visit my husband’s old college friend who was a diving instructor on the island. Lembongan is little haven for divers, a mix of expats who live to dive and to relax on a peaceful beach once the work is done. This was the beach I was searching for; not the noisy, busy and dirty beaches of Kuta and Seminyak. Lembongan was small enough and easy-going enough that we rented a moped from the same place we were staying in and rode around the island, exploring on our own. The staff even gave us the local events to check out if we so desired – the traditional burial that was happening at 1pm and the cockfight that was happening at 3pm. 우리는 우리가 하게될 액티비티나 투어가 숙소로 데려다주는 것 을 고려해가며 여행에 대한 계획을 세웠다. 필자는 택시를 상대하 고 흥정하는 것이 딱 싫고, 카카오 택시앱과 같은 것은 삶을 너무 편하게 해준다. 무료로 제공되는 교통편은 섬에 있는 액티비티와 업체를 고를 때 큰 즐거움이었다. 아니타 게스트하우스는 실망스

럽지 않았고 한시간 반을 걸려 사누르까지 데려다 주었는데, 이 곳 은 누신 렘봉안 섬까지 가장 안전하고 더 가격이 센 록키 패스트 스피드보트를 예약한 곳이다. 여기에 온 주요한 이유는 섬의 다이 빙 강사였던 남편의 오래된 대학친구를 만나기 위해서였다. 렘봉 안은 다이버들과 일이 끝나고 나서 다이빙을 하고 평화로운 해변 에서 쉬려고 살아가는 외국인들에게는 작은 안식처이다. 이 곳이 바로 필자가 찾던 해변가였다. 쿠타와 세미냑의 시끄랍고 북적거 리고 더러운 해변이 아니라 말이다. 렘봉안은 지내던 곳에서 대여 하여 우리끼리 섬을 돌아다니기에 충분히 작고 쉽게 지낼만한 곳 이다. 숙소 스탭은 만약 우리가 관심이 있다면 가볼만한 지역행사 도 알려줬는데 오후 1시에 벌어지는 전통매장과 3시에 열릴 닭싸 움이었다.

I am not a huge beach person but really enjoyed Lembongan. I recommend staying there a few days to relax by the beach, mix in with the locals and the local expats who continue to come back to teach at the diving school year after year. They are in the know and can give you other small island recommendations to you. I did enjoy the hut we stayed in, though there was one thing to take note of. If you are right by the beach, don’t bother staying at a hotel with a pool if money is an issue. It’s not worth it. It looks pretty, but we barely stayed in to even look at it.

나는 해변가를 많이 좋아하는 편은 아니지만 렘봉안에서는 정말 즐겁게 지냈다. 해변가에서 지역주민들과 그리고 매년 또 다시 다 이빙교실을 가르치러 계속 돌아오는 지역의 외국인들과 어울리며 몇 일 동안 지내보길 추천한다. 그들은 다른 작은 섬들에 대하 잘 알고 있어서 여러분에게 추천해 줄 수도 있다. 만약 해변 바로 옆 에 있고 예산이 문제라면 수영장이 딸린 호텔에 묵는 수고를 하지 마라. 그만한 가치가 없다. 보기에는 예쁘지만 우리는 숙소 안에 거의 있지도 않았고 보지 조차 않았다.

was a neat surprise. One place I wish I had gone to was Frankenstein’s Laboratory, Bali's first and only Halloween Themed Restaurant and Cabaret. Possibly hokey, but all my Daegu friends know I love the whole dressing up thing.

You can definitely shop around for a good massage, as staff members are outside offering you pamphlets every 100 feet. 이 여행을 계획할 때 통장이 바닥 나지 않게 대부분의 여행경비를 만드는데 혈안이 되어 있었다. 그래서 도달한 결론이 세미냑이었 다. 한편으로는 이 “고급” 쇼핑가가 궁금해서, 한편으로는 록키 패 스트 스피드보트가 제공하는 무료 교통편을 이용히기 위해서 말 이다. 세미냑은 사람들도 붐비는데다 물가가 조금 비쌌다. 식당과 바에서 연주하는 괜찮은 라이브 밴드가 몇 미터마다 계속 있었다. 우리가 묵었던 호텔에도 있었는데 괜찮은 서프라이즈였다. 가 보 고 싶었지만 못 갔던 곳이 ‘프랑켄슈타인의 실험실’인데, 발리에서 처음으로 할로윈을 테마로 한 식당 겸 캬바레이다. 감상적일 수도 있지만 대구의 친구들은 필자가 완벽한 분장을 하는 것을 얼마나 좋아하는지 알고 있다. 당연히 괜찮은 마사지를 받을 곳도 돌아 볼 수 있는데 백피트마다 종업원이 나와서 전단지를 돌린다.

can hire a driver for about 12 hours to take you anywhere you want. Taking advantage of it, we went sightseeing to the famous Tanah Lot temple and to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace. It was utterly delightful having a driver, and asking him to stop whenever we wanted, hearing trip suggestions from him and just being stress-free about transportation in general. 세미냑에서 출발하여 우붓까지 차로 한 시간 정도 걸리는 것을 알 고 있었다. 우붓은 우리의 마지막이자 최종 목적지였다. 우붓에 있 는 호텔은 말도 안 되는 가격으로 픽업 서비스를 제공했다. 하룻동 안 운전기사를 고용하는 것은 ⅓ 가격이었고, 친구가 강력히 추천해 준 것이었다. 약 미화 50달러로 원하는 곳 어디든 갈 수 있도록 12 시간 동안 운전기사를 고용할 수 있다. 이 점을 이용해서 우리는 그 유명한 따나 롯 사원과 뜨갈랄랑 계단식 논을 보러 갔다. 운전 기사가 있고 언제든 원할 때 세워달라고 하고 여행에 대한 추천을 듣고 교통에 대한 걱정을 전혀 하지 않아도 되는 것은 완전히 기분 좋은 일이었다.

Ubud – Pool Villas, Yoga Nirvana and Monkeys Galore 우붓 - 풀빌라, 요가 니르바나 그리고 원숭이 떼 Ubud has no beaches, but it makes up for it with its serene beauty. Ubud is rice paddies, bright green foliage and a yoga lover’s paradise. Our pool villa was our biggest splurge, but it was a once in a lifetime experience. The really sweet staff had no idea it was our honeymoon. When they realized it, they surprised us with a rose petal bath and honeymoon décor one night. In town, I fell in love with the Monkey Forest. I could have stayed there for hours, enjoying the antics of these free-roaming monkeys and this place that reminded me of Indian Jones or Nathan Drake. Ubud is also an art lovers dream as well, where you can shop for locally made jewelry and paintings. 우붓에는 해변이 없지만 고요한 아름다움으로 그 아쉬움을 달래 준다. 우붓은 논, 밝은 녹색잎, 요가 애호가들의 천국이다. 우리가 지낸 풀빌라는 우리가 가장 크게 돈을 쓴 곳이었으나 평생에 한 번 하는 경험이었다. 정말 친절한 스탭은 우리가 신혼여행을 온 줄 전 혀 몰랐다. 그 사실을 알게 되자 어느 날 밤장미꽃잎이 띄워진 욕 조와 허니문 데코레이션으로 우리는 놀라게 했다. 마을에서는 원 숭이 숲과 사랑에 빠지게 되었다. 자유롭게 돌아다니는 원숭이들 의 익살스러운 행동과 인디애나 존스와 나단 드레이크를 떠오르 게 하는 이 장소를 즐기며 몇 시간이고 지낼 수 있었다. 또한 우붓

One of the best places to get European food in Daegu, 옥상 therooftop has made quite a name for itself. You can easily find it above What? BBQ restaurant on meat street. The owner and chef, Rose Kyunghwa Kim, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia and has a menu packed with fantastic dishes. From the cheese-stuffed meatballs, to the Caesar’s salad, not to mention the fantastic chicken schnitzel, the menu has plenty to offer at a great price.

The best fish and chips in Daegu can be found at Brewer Bros, and the portion sizes are massive. You can get a medium size portion for 12,000 or a large for 15,000. Hands-down my favorite dessert cafe in Daegu. The owner of this lovely cafe fell in love with New York style desserts while studying at Parson’s School of Design. The coffee, aide, and tea on offer perfectly complement the gorgeous desserts she makes. You can even order entire cakes for special occasions. There’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend, though I personally lean towards the Profiterole cake and anything she makes with chocolate!

My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. The place is small, so you might have to wait, but it is my favorite place to go for brunch downtown.

I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! The dish includes a sunnyside-up egg, two lovely pieces of toast, a small salad, and mushrooms in a cheese-cream sauce - to die for! I love to head to G’Day on a Saturday or Sunday, with my laptop in-tow. I can enjoy a great brunch, wonderful coffee (and tea), and get some writing done in a great, relaxed atmosphere.

One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. To find the restaurant, take exit 5 from Sinmae station and go straight until you see Dunkin Donuts (it’s on the 2nd floor of that building). The restaurant is foreigner-friendly and they will cater the spice level to your needs. The dishes are well-priced and there are plenty of vegetarian and halal options as well.

The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. They serve western-style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort foods. HamiMami’s homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, and sausages are among the best in the city and their bread is delivered fresh daily. Head to HamiMami’s when you’re feeling a little homesick and let them spoil you!

This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! Oh - I’ve never seen anyone pay by card, so it’d be best to take cash with you.

Suseong Lake La Salud

I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. I usually go for the house burger, but you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu! Definitely go for the set, which includes a drink and side. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill.

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods.

Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor.

Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted.

Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors.

ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market.

There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp.

Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market.

Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes.

District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food.

In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
