After an all-night train ride from Daegu to Mokpo (a tiny coastal town of Mokpo) station, a frantic transfer to the ferry terminal (where we were almost left behind), the Star Ferry was an oasis of calm for these two weary travelers. The ship was equipped with everything from a noraebang to a Paris Baguette (On a Korean ferry, we would expect no less). It was a longer journey than by airplane of course. It was also a far more satisfying one. The ship offered a dining hall with

We are Genius, a three piece rock ‘n’ roll band straight out of Busan. Similar to Cream, we have guitar, bass, drums, and we all sing. Unlike Cream we only play original songs and don’t have long, boring solos. Some of our songs are funny, and sometimes that’s intentional. There are songs about sex, death, girlfriends, and at least two about our guitarist/singer’s mom. All of the songs have something in common: they are not boring. We do not like listening to or watching boring music, so we try hard not to make any. We play rock ‘n’ roll. We like energy. Our shows are sometimes drunken disasters, but they’re always fun. At least that’s what people, who usually seem mentally unstable, tell us after we play. We are not satisfied unless we enjoyed our set and it seemed like other people did, too. We have played all over (South) Korea and have had shows in Taiwan and Japan. 3. Language of Shapes (Expat/Gangneung/Folk)

Round 3 When an Englishman, a kyopo, and a couple of Americans started jamming together on Gangneung beaches and rooftops, Language of Shapes was born. Mandolins like never before, punctuated with a driving bass, tribal djembe beats, and the occasional flute. With haunting vocals and post-apocalyptic yet hopeful lyrics, Language of Shapes ultimately eludes labels. Dirty Hippie Radio calls their debut album “delightful, badass, and necessary.”

4. 肉肉肉 (Korean/ Daegu / Metal) New Wave Of American Heavy Metal Style Band. The Name literally means, “Meat, Meat, Meat.” You want to know what it really means? Come and check it out. New Wave Of American Heavy Metal 스타일의 음악입 니다. 그게 뭐냐구요? 쪼매 시끄럽고 겁나 신난다는 뜻입니다. 멤버 : 한영규(Vox), 두근오(Bass), 김명진(Drum), 양명 철(Guitar)

Chretien is from South Africa and has made his own bass guitar using an 18-liter water bottle and a long piece of pine. He also plays with Daegu’s “Swinging doors” and can be seen on any given Sunday at Traveler’s open mic. On guitar, Denizen now boasts its first Korean band member, Choi Joung Woo. Mr. Choi is a professional guitarist who works at MBC and teaches lessons on the side. On drums, Denizen welcomes its newest member from Ireland, Mr. Ivan Cooper. Ivan has extensive band experience and recording knowledge as well as some killer chops on the kit. American Michael McFarlane is the band leader and singer/songwriter. He has finished the demo for the band’s second album “Decade Lost.” and is already writing material for a third album.

렉트로닉과 락사운드에 녹혀서 연주하는 밴드입니다. 뉴런이 라는 팀이름은 먼저 New-Run 이라는 어감과도 비슷하여 지었지만, 정확히는 신경세포를 의미하는 뜻을 가지고 있습 니다. 사람의 감각을 통해 받아들인 정보는 뇌로 전달되고, 뇌에서 판단을 하게 되는데, 이 과정은 뉴런이라는 신경세포 를 통해 일어나게 됩니다. 신경세포로 볼 수 있는 개개인의 멤 버들이 모여 연주함으로 하나의 신경을 이루게 되고, 귀와 눈 을 통해서 듣고, 보게되는 저희의 음악이 사람들의 뇌에 꽂 힐 수 있도록 신경세포로서 제 역할을 하는 팀이 되고자 뉴런 (Neuron)이라는 이름을 만들게 되었습니다.

Chrome- Saigon, Vietnam. I've always had a thing for chrome and stainless steel. The way it looks and reflects light never fails to fascinate me. Just need to wait for the right moment to get the reflections you want, and click!

Granville Island- Vancouver, Canda. I have no idea what this is or what it does and I frankly don't care. If I had had the means I would have picked it up and taken it home with me. Sexy colors, rust, decay! The reflection and raindrops were the icing on the cake.

Line- Seoul, South Korea. Generally speaking most post 70's architecture is sterile and boring, in my opinion. Sometimes you need to dig deeper to seek out the interesting.

This is an exciting development not just for Korean golf, but in Korean sports in general as it is one of the top 10 golfing events in the world and it’s in KOREA!! DongHwan has been winning in Japan so it isn’t a surprise he qualified for the PGA. As for Siwoo, I do not know him very well, as is the case for lot of people, so he is definitely more of a surprise. He has represented Korea in the amateur ranks, but it will be tough for him to get a footing on the PGA Tour with his current status, in my opinion.

I was just looking to make ends meet and needed a job. My father wanted me to be a farmer like himself and my brother, but I wanted something more exciting. Working at the driving range picking up golf balls wasn’t my idea of having fun, but when the range closed, I got to hit all the balls I wanted and it escalated from there.

Q.5 How close is your friendship with KJ Choi? Q.5 최경주 선수와는 어느정도로 친한가요? Practice. Not just to aspiring golf heroes and heroines, but also to all golfers in general. Golf is an honest sport. It’s not talent dependant as much as other popular sports and is the reason why it is so popular among the amateur ranks. After a few hours of walking and bus-riding, we happened upon a friendly little fellow, in the form of this fountain just outside the Cheonjiyeon waterfalls. The fountain had the shape of four different animals inside of a single tortoise shell. Each of the four animals represented a relevant part in the legend of Jeju’s origin, with an explanation of the story in English and Korean. 몇 시간 동안 도보와 버스로 이동한 후에 우연히 천지연 폭포 바깥 쪽에 있는 작고 친근한 분 수를 발견했다. 이 분수는 거북이 등껍질 아래에 있 는 네 가지 동물 모양으로 되어 있었다. 한국어와 영 어로 된 이야기의 설명서에 따르면 각 동물은 제주도 기원에 대한 전설과 관련된 것을 상징한다. -continued on p30-

The Cheonjeyeon falls represent one location of the three of major waterfalls on Jeju. The name of this waterfall means “the place where heaven and earth meet,” and according to legend, this is the place where heavenly creatures (water nymphs, or angels in some translations) would take their evening bath. That legend, combined with their pastoral tranquility, has long made these falls a popular destination for honeymooning couples.

A large bridge connects the land masses between the falls and the rest of the island. We arrived just around sunset, to catch the breathtaking view of the ocean. I managed to snap a photo of a Korean couple taking in the sights as evening quickly approached. We two travellers headed into the center of the main city, to catch some dinner so that we could make our evening destination before the busses shut down.

Black pork (huk dwe ji) is a specialty on Jeju, and therefore a bit pricy. The island’s residents swear that it is the most delicious pork to be found in Korea. Both I and my traveling companion felt that even so, the price of the meal was a bit much for what looked and tasted very similar to Sam Gyeop Sal that we had eaten in Daegu. Even still, the restaurant that we found near the falls was lovely, and served a generous supply of ban chan (side dishes) that were also quite delicious. The price of admission was also almost paid for by the awe-inducing window-view of the ocean, which seemed available from almost every corner of our view.

흑돼지는 제주의 특산품이라서 조금 비싼 편이 다. 섬사람들은 한국에서 찾을 수 있는 가장 맛있는 돼지고 기라고 장담한다. 그렇다고 하더라도 나와 내 동행 모두 대 구에서 먹은 삼겹살과 비슷해 보이고, 맛도 비슷한 식사의 가격이 조금 비싸다고 생각했다. 게다가 폭포 근처에서 발 견했던 식당은 반찬도 넉넉하게 주는 좋은 곳이었고, 꽤 맛 도 있었다. 폭포 입장료도 어느 각도에서 봐도 경외심을 불 러일으키는 바다의 풍경을 창문에서 바라볼 수 있는 것에 대해 치르는 것이었다고 할 수 있다.

Art and Culture_a Small Museum with Many Big Surprises

Our last stop of the night was the Jeju World Cup Stadium. Soccer fans will recognize it as one of the several sites of the FIFA World Cup 2002. For the two of us, however, it was not the stadium but the bath house (jjim jil bang) housed underneath that had our interest. If you can get over the idea of sharing a hot bath with several other naked folk of your gender, Korean bathing culture can be a very enjoyable experience. It can also be a great way to save money, as we were able to spend the night on the floor of the building with sleeping mats and blankets provided by the bath house. This particular bath house had a coffee theme. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to take a bath in a giant Americano, this place would be highly recommended. 밤에 마지막으로 갔던 곳은 제주 월드컵 경기장 이었다. 축구팬들은 이 곳을 2002 월드컵의 몇몇 장소 중 하나로 알아볼 것이다. 그러나 우리에게는 경기장이 그 아 래쪽에 우리의 흥미를 끌었던 찜질방으로 기억하고 있다. 동성의 벌거벗은 사람들과 함께 목욕을 하는 것을 극복할 수 있다면, 한국식 목욕 문화는 아주 즐거운 경험이 될 것 이다. 또한 돈을 절약하는 훌륭한 방법이기도 하다. 찜질 방에서 제공하는 매트와 이불을 가지고 바닥에서 밤을 보 낼 수 있었던 것처럼 말이다. 이 특정한 찜질방은 커피를 주제로 하고 있다. 만약 아메리카노로 채워진 거대한 탕 안 에서 하는 목욕이 궁금하다면 이 장소를 강력히 추천한다.

Things were starting to feel real now. The staff guided me through the paperwork, gave me a t-shirt, and told me to get ready. Was that apathy or pity in their eyes? I changed into what was possibly my death attire, emptied my pockets, and prepared to get strapped up. 이제 모든 게 진짜처럼 느껴지 기 시작한다. 스탭들이 서약서 작성을 안내해주고, 티셔츠를 한 장 준 다음 준비하라고 이야 기해줬다. 그 사람들의 눈 속에 있던 건 무관심이었을까, 동정 이었을까? 나는 내 장례복장이 될 지도 모르는 옷으로 갈아입 고, 주머니를 비우고, 줄에 묶 일 준비를 했다.

“So you’re going to pull this red cord by your left knee once you rebound. This will release your ankle straps and bring you to a sitting position.” Wait, what? I have instructions to follow? You expect me to be cognizant in the middle of plunging 764 feet? Tied up and strapped in, I shimmied over to the ledge. “Just get a little closer to the edge… it’s going to feel a bit heavy” What’s going to feel heavy…? OH CRAP! You mean this 500 feet of bungee cord that’s attached to my ankles is dangling in empty space beneath me?! “Say hi to the camera!”

It’s like that first breathless plunge off a steep rollercoaster drop. Your brain shuts down while your body tries its best to understand this incredibly unnatural feeling. It’s gonna stop any moment now. I’m going to stop falling, you think. But you don’t. There’s so much space left… 첫 번째 숨막히는 느낌은 가파른 롤러코스터에서 떨 어지는 것 같다. 몸이 믿기 힘든 이 부자연스러운 느 낌을 받아들이기 위해 노력하는 동안 뇌는 활동을 멈춰버린다. 곧 금방 멈출 것이라고, 이제 그만 떨어 질 것이라고 생각할 것이다. 하지만 그렇지 않다. 아 직 땅에 도착하려면 멀었다.

Somehow, for a reason unknown to me, this uncomfortable squeeze on my being suddenly dissipates. What was once a suffocating contraction now feels like clear expansion. I see the landing pad. I’m aware of my surroundings. I feel my body flying (or falling) through space. It was like breaking through cloud cover and seeing clear skies for the first time. The rebound was unnerving. Launched back halfway up the length of the tower, I remembered my instructions and looked down (or up) towards my knee for the red cord. Pulling the cord just as I achieved momentary suspension 400 feet in the air, my body suddenly jolted back into right side up. Holy crap! Where am I? I had a last few seconds to savor the fact that I was the only person in the country hanging 200 feet in the air. It felt like a special, private, exclusive place. Gaining

the ground was both a relief and a burden at the same time. It was like taking solace in the safety of my physical constraints. With that said however, my first few steps back on earth did feel a bit lighter, and the world around me did look a bit bigger. Cheongdo Bullfighting Tour 5 Stops, 4 Buses, 1 Great Day!

It was around 9:00 a.m. when 4 busloads left Banwaldong and headed south to Cheongdo. Located in North Gyeongsang Province, Cheongdo plays host to the largest bullfighting championship in the country and, this year, the fifth annual Daegu Compass bullfighting trip. Unlike the more familiar man versus beast form of bullfighting, the 1,000-year old Korean version imitates the bulls’ interspecies’ territorial struggles that don’t result in death or dismemberment of the animal. In addition to the bullfighting festival, the busses stopped at a “wine tunnel,” organic market, a park for a barbeque lunch and a strawberry greenhouse. Despite the rainy weather, the Compass staff kept attendees dry. The Gam Wine tunnel opened it’s doors in 2006 and holds the perhaps dubious honor of being the world’s first persimmon wine cellar. Originally known as the “Namseonghyeon Tunnel,” and over 1 kilometer long, it was built in 1898 to house a railway used to transport materials during the Korean War. Its entrance is now surrounded by a beautiful persimmon orchard.

The tunnel’s location in the middle of the mountain keeps the temperature a constant 15 degrees and humidity at 60-70%, apparently perfect conditions for aging persimmon wine. The wine itself might not win any international acclaim, but combined with the unique atmosphere, saltine crackers and American cheese and two generous pours of persimmon wine, it made for a fun way to start the day.

After a stop at the organic market and a hot Americano coffee to warm up, the busses headed to a nearby park’s band shell for a barbeque lunch of samgyeopsal, hot dogs, tofu for the vegetarians, soda and soju punch. Realizing many attendees didn’t heed the recommendations to b.y.o.b., Compass staffed arranged an impromptu beer run to a local mart.

After lunch, it was off to the Cheongdo Sossaum (bullfighting arena). Drawing over 500,000 visitors since it’s 1999 inception, the event is a full-fledged festival with traditional costumes, local dignitaries, food booths, music and other performances.

Putting some money on the outcome is an inexpensive way to add excitement to the bouts – the minimum bet is a mere 100 won. Even a small amount of money and pride on predicting the winner will draw you into every movement in the ring. If you like to live a little more dangerously, bet the maximum 100,000 won.

The real action, though, takes place inside the arena. Seeing two massive bulls lock horns and push 1,000 kilos of muscle against another is a site unmatched. The crowd roars with each clash of horns, cheering on their favorite bull – marked

Despite being woefully ignorant of bullfighting’s finer intricacies (unlike most native Korean observers), this veteran spectator of American rodeos found the fights to be more intense than action-filled, but exciting nonetheless.

The process of betting couldn’t be much easier – make your way to the bottom of the arena, mark your betting slip, pay the cashier and yell furiously when your bull walks onto the arena’s sand.

Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival Not too Crabby!

Like other Daegu Compass trips, this trip was on Saturday, but unlike other Daegu Compass trips, this one was led by Wandong Yeo. He put together a trip to Gangguhang Port area, where we spent 25,000 won to go to the Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival. It was about a two a half hour bus ride to get to the east coast of Korea. It was very pretty. The view reminded me of central California’s coastline. The festival took place from March 28 to April 1. Long ago, these snow crabs were regarded as delicacies and would be specially presented to the king. King crabs in Yeongdeok are reared in the same way as they were hundreds of years ago; therefore they have a particularly clean and pure taste. There were many snow

crab related events. They had everything from crab fishing competition, where you were allowed to catch up to three crabs, to dancing on stage with the dancers. This was fun! Let’s not forget the parade that went through the entire festival, it was called “The Walk of Taejo.” Here also the “Snow Crab Public Auction” is especially popular. Over 100,000 snow crabs are sold and cooked during the festival. This was the perfect opportunity for visitors to purchase snow crabs at a low price and enjoy the marketplace atmosphere. At the marketplace, we saw other seafood. Various fish but what stood out the most was the lobster. Over 24 inches (2’) long or 60cm and a claw as big, if not bigger, than my hand, and I have some bear like paws.

Visitors at the festival rode on a snow crab fishing boat, took part in a snow crab cooking competition, walked along the 400â&#x20AC;&#x2122; pier, and even got a chance to sample various snow crab dishes for free. Such as Daegetang (snow crab soup) and snow crab noodles. We had about a dozen of us (teachers) from Camp George on the bus from Daegu. Half of the other bus was from Jinhae. I asked several people how they heard about the trip and was told, mostly by word of mouth. Some said Facebook, and then others said the Compass. Wandong Yeo had put together, not only a nice trip for

us, but another trip going to Busan. Once there, they would be celebrating an Indian religious holiday which involved throwing colored powder. This was a good day for us and everyone said that they are looking forward to the next Daegu Compass trip. A special thanks to Yeo Wandong, his first Compass trip and he did a great job!!

s well as welcoming the cherry blossoms to Korea, the streets of Daegu are filled with a number of new faces. This can only signal one thing. A new batch of EPIK English teachers have arrived. With the start of a new school year, comes many bright eyed and bushy tailed travelers from every area of the globe. Each one ready to experience both the fantastic and kooky extremes that Daegu has to offer.

We thought it would be a great time to find out a little bit more about some of our new ‘Daegu-euns’ as well as ask some experienced ‘Waygooks’ for some friendly welcoming advice. How old are you?

I'm perilously close to 28 years of age.

Where are you from?

I was born in London, but I grew up in Bridgend, South Wales.

Can you tell us a little bit about your area of Daegu?

I currently reside in Pyeongri within Seogu. I think it's fair to say that I live in a comparatively deprived area of Daegu. What would you say are the advantages and disadvantages of the area in which you live? As alluded to above, my students and neighbors are considered to come from low socio-economic backgrounds. However, this means that prices are kept low locally, and the area has a very raw and authentic feel. I really like it.

What is your opinion of the Korean people?

The highest compliment I can pay the Korean people is that, if I had the choice, I would change the British character to be more like the Korean character, rather than the other way around. They're kind, considerate, polite, hospitable and fun. What's not to love?

What is your favorite restaurant:?

Anywhere that serves 'Galbi' but I recently tried â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Pan Asiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and it was delicious.

What is your favorite bar?

Why did you choose to move to Daegu?

My boyfriend Jacob and I chose Daegu because we were likely to be placed together. It's also nice and close to everywhere! Which is fabulous.

What is your opinion on Daegu's transport system?

Daegu's public transport system is pretty 'tops'. It will be substantially more amazing when the monorail is up and running. But I have to say, the buses are pretty fantastic. I am on the bus or metro for almost two hours every day getting to and from school. I can vouch for it's reliability.

Have you had a chance to join any fitness teams or get any exercise while in Daegu?

So far I've been for numerous runs, which has proved beautiful as we have some lovely mountain trails near our house. I've also been to a K-Pop dance class, which I'm planning on frequenting and mastering.

What is your opinion on Daeguâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s night life?

I enjoy it! It reminds me of the night life in Atlanta; its got a little bit of everything but not too much of anything. I love running by the river in the day. Great paths for running.

What has been one of your favorite Korean experiences so far?

Getting a huge pancake brunch in Seoul with one of my best friends (who lives in Seoul). It was a revelation.

Can you tell us a little bit about the area you and your boyfriend live?

My boyfriend stays near Sangin subway stop, it is very central with a Lotte department store, gym, Daiso, Home Plus and western restaurants, it is quite a new area compared to mine. My area is about 15 minutes from the Daegu Bank subway stop, it is quite an older area with lots of traditional Korean food places, yoga centers and Suseong market. They are both very different and awesome in their own way.

Can you tell us a little bit about the school you teach in?

The experience of teaching in Korea has been both challenging and rewarding. Challenging because I was under the impression that my co-teachers would teach with me and I have had to take on the role of teaching on my own. Students in high school are really difficult to keep stimulated in every lesson

especially the boys. This experience has been rewarding because I am growing as not just a teacher but as a person. I'm realizing my strengths and weaknesses. It has been a really good decision for me.

What would you say are the main differences between Daegu and your home in South Africa? Main differences? Wow, there are so many! Climate, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as cold in SA as its Daegu. I hear it snows here, it never snows in Cape Town. Tipping waiters, we tip in SA. Living space, in Cape Town we have quite a lot more space, the apartments/houses are larger! In Daegu there are just apartment blocks everywhere with tiny apartments. I'd like to go skiing and see Jeju Island and do some travelling within Korea.

pletely new world to discover in terms of food, and I had never realized how much variation there could be. I think I have found a new â&#x20AC;&#x153;favorite foodâ&#x20AC;? every month or so! In general, I have hugely enjoyed the fact that the more you learn about Korean culture, language, people and the city itself, the more you can appreciate and the more you can discover.

Do you think you will be staying for another year?

I have just decided that I will not be staying in Korea. I have been offered an opportunity to study human rights in Italy and as much as I have loved Daegu, and Korea in general, I felt that this was something that I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn down. It is testament to how much I have enjoyed living here that the decision was such a difficult one to make, I will hugely miss the country, the people, the friends I have made here and the wonderful freedom to explore and travel. But, luckily, I do still have five months to go!

What advice would you give to new arrivals to Daegu?

Be active, get out there and explore and embrace the culture and the city, which at first may seem so strange and different. Meet as many people as you can and try and take advantage of every opportunity; you will be rewarded with some amazing experiences and friendships!

What has been some of your favorite experiences while living in Daegu?

The autumn in Korea, although short, produces some incredible color, and one of my favorite experiences was taking a trip to Palgong Mountain during this time. Some of my other favorite experiences have been discovering new restaurants and new food here. For most of us, there is a com-

“A good command of English is vital to be successful in Korea’s job market” Lee Byeong Wan, Ph.D., Professor, Economist, and former Director of Yeungnam University’s Foreign Language Institute There are more than 27,000 native English speakers currently teaching in Korea, helping to fulfill a remarkable national strategy for learning English. The largest contingents are from the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. That figure is even more impressive when you consider that as recently as 2002, there were 10,950 English speakers teaching in Korea—less than half the current number. English teachers can be found in all types of teaching venues and roles in Korea, with the single largest contingent working at private

English Centers known as Hagwons. Many teach at the elementary and secondary levels. Daegu, known as an education center in Korea, has an impressive number of educational institutions. As of 2009 there were 215 elementary schools, 123 middle schools and 91 high schools. There are also more than 20 universities and colleges. Our focus here will be on native English speakers teaching at the many colleges and universities in Daegu. What attracts English teachers to roles at universities? According to Lee Byeong Wan, professor and Daegu Community _ Make the Next Step

economist at Yeungnam University, the leading factors include: the opportunity for professional development, the intellectually stimulating environment, longer vacations, and the multiple perspectives that are included in faculty evaluation systems, such as feedback from students, colleagues and staff. Successful English teachers at the university-level tend to demonstrate several attributes. Professor Lee found that the characteristics of effective EFL/ESL instructors include: enthusiasm, preparation and patience. My personal experience bears this out. lack of any of these factors can present problems for a native speaking university instructor or professor. Over the last several decades there is an unmistakable upward trend in the number of native English speakers teaching in Korea. Factors influencing this trend include: the economic conditions in one’s home country; personal interest in a new cross-cultural experience and the salary, benefits and work conditions at the Korean work site. The latter, of course, vary from school to school. But university instructors and professors generally find their compensation to be at the higher end of the English educator salary pay continuum. Workloads, while sometimes challenging, tend to be significantly less than those faced by teachers at Hagwons, elementary, middle or high schools. Professors generally have teaching loads of 12-18 hours/week. Instructors usually teach 17 hours/week or more.

Many college-level teachers have master’s degrees and even doctorates. However, there are many individuals teaching English at universities who do not have graduate degrees. Yeungnam University, for example, recently eliminated its previous requirement of a master’s degree for a professor’s position--this change is said to provide the university greater flexibility in its recruitment efforts. On the flip-side however, many schools require prior university-level teaching experience from their candidates. As would be expected, compensation varies widely. One recent survey of 30 Korean universities found that starting annual salaries for university level English teachers with a master’s degree was between 35,000,000 – 37,000,000 won. For faculty with a bachelor’s degree, the starting salary was 26,700,000 won. In terms of housing support, 37% offered a housing allowance or free housing. If you are considering a university-level English teaching position, a good place to start is to speak with someone who is currently in the role. Networking is an important strategy in any job search, and that goes for teaching English at the university level as well. Use your connections, make contacts through friends and friends of friends, and set up an “informational interview” to learn more about a particular college -continued on p53-

environment, a school or department’s work and learning climate and what a typical week is like. For example, at Yeungnam University’s Foreign Language Institute, all faculty members are expected to also work several hours a week at the school’s English Help Desk. In addition, staff members have the opportunity to coach students oneon-one through a special program sponsored by the Institute. Getting Ready to Apply Depending on the university, schools start looking at their staffing needs about 5-8 months prior to the actual start date. So if you’re considering applying for the fall semester, the March-April time frame is a good time to make sure your documentation is in order. Minimally, universities will want to see a resume, official college diplomas (sometimes apostilled with the

official stamp of state or national agencies), transcripts and recommendations. A well-written cover letter is always an advantage—one that underscores both your specific teaching experience and interest in teaching and a statement indicating why you would make a good addition to the university you are applying to. If you are applying from within Korea, final candidates are usually invited to come to the university to do a teaching-demo, that is, conduct a class with a small number of students who have been specifically invited for that purpose. In that way, hiring officials can see how you engage with students under nearly-actual classroom conditions. I would recommend developing a highly interactive lesson plan, one that is also very flexible. It may help to ask your contact person at the

school about the students--their English speaking level, how many students will be in the room, and who else will be in present. This information will help your planning and also likely reduce some of the stress you understandably might be feeling. These days, the most popular online sites used by universities include Dave’s ESL Café and ARJK. Some universities also post their job openings on their respective university websites. Education continues to be an important contributing factor to Korea’s success. And with more than 20 colleges and universities in the Greater Daegu alone, the teaching of English is an important economic stimulant to the area’s economy. Make your mark, teach at a Daegu “U.”

Mike Bartlett’s brilliant writing takes us through a man’s journey into sexual and emotional confusion as he struggles to come to terms with ‘what’ he is…and if that even matters at all. After reading the title, you may, at first feel turnedon or turned-off. But, far from being a sensational shocker, Mike Bartlett’s award-winning comedy “COCK” is a piercing, intelligent analysis of a man torn between his longtime male partner and the woman he has fallen in love with. Daegu International School Promoting Youth Leadership

It is with reminiscent familiarity that I write again for the Daegu Compass. Back in 2011, I had the honor of introducing both myself and my school, Daegu International School, on paper. Representing our students, I had elaborated on the reason behind my decision to come to DIS, intimately describing my life as a student and my personal goals. This time, driven by renewed reporter’s zeal, I have interviewed one of DIS’s most indispensable teachers to recount an inaugural school event. With the landmark presidential elections last November of both South Korea and the United States came the remarkable event of the first-ever Presidential Mock Election at our school. 11th grade students had the opportunity to engage in the ongoing American political scene under the lead of their AP US History teacher, Mr. Jonathan Lewis. The video that documents this meaningful project and conveys the passionate dedica-

tion he and his students put into this project has been submitted to the Follett Challenge. This is a competition that recognizes innovative teachers and programs in schools from all over the world. All prizes go directly into the classroom to better the learning environment and supply educational resources for its students. Mr. Lewis and his students have unanimously decided to donate half of any winnings to the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut—the unfortunate backdrop of a brutal shooting spree that happened in December in the United States. As an aspiring journalist and the leader of the Democratic Party in this mock election, I have interviewed Mr. Lewis to get to the bottom of this event.

1. Why were you inspired to do this project? Every presidential election inspires me, and I try different ways to get it to inspire students, too. Presidential elections in America give us a chance to affect our future like nothing else. Being an international school, I wanted my students to experience this and try to make a difference.

2. What assignments did each party have to accomplish? (paper ads, debates, videos) The main task each party had to come up with was how to sell their candidate to the student body. One group of students represented Democratic candidate Barack Obama, the other represented Republican Mitt Romney. Many of our students had some knowledge of the US candidates, but the students in my class had to try to win their support. Both groups also had to give a speech in front of the school, film commercials that played on our school news program, hang campaign signs all over the school and have three students that would represent their group in a debate, also done in front of the school. 3. What significance does this project have to DIS? With our Head of School, Mark Grice, we thought that a hands-on experience would be great for our students in terms of learning about the Presidential Election. “You learn by doing” is a popular and credible adage that had proven itself with this project. Research shows that hands-on experience can really motivate and take learning to a new level. It also helped students get excited about their own election here in Korea which was going on at the same time. They could better understand the process and get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes. 4. What do you think your students learned from this project? The biggest thing I think they learned was how important voting is and even more importantly how you must be an informed voter. They learned how they can influence others by having an informed opinion based on facts and figures. There’s more to it than just filling out a ballot…your vote can actually make a difference and make an impact on the future. 5. Which party won? Was this expected? Why? (debate, publicity, winners, etc.) It was no surprise that the Democrats and Barack Obama won the election. It was almost 3 to 1 in the voting. It is interesting that so many of our international students love President Obama even though before our mock election, they probably didn’t even know why.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun.
