Have a Fiesta with Beeritas Caliente Keeps Daegu Cool this Summer Written and photographed by Ivan Broida

As bars and restaurants come to and disappear from downtown Daegu, sometimes, it seems, magically, Caliente has remained a steady favorite among the downtown night-faring crowd. Be it for the great selection of drinks, the music hand-picked by a DJ, or the reliable Tex-Mex food served there, people keep coming back to enjoy everything that Caliente has to offer. Instead of getting complacent in its success, Caliente has decided to expand its beer and appetizer menu to offer more variety to its regular and costumers and entice new ones. 8

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.MAY

Let's start with the beers. Korea has been enjoying an influx of good imported beers and Daegu is not an exception to this. Seizing on this (hopefully permanent) trend, Caliente now has a second bar exclusively for imported beers, both on tap and by the bottle. The beer tap system is a beauty. All the kegs are kept in fridges at all times to guarantee the beers' freshness and quality. The beers on tap range from light to bitter and various degrees of both in between. If you are not a beer connoisseur, Caliente offers a sampler, which includes six different beers for 16,000 won. At less than 3,000

won per 200ml glass, it's a good way of choosing a favorite beer before committing to a full glass. The beers included in the sampler are Big Rock, Paulaner, Weihenstephan, Weihenstephan Dunkel, London Pride, and Honey Brown. Other beers on tap are Hoegaarden, Heineken, Asahi, and Guinness. Beerritas have also made their way into Caliente's new menu. Think of them as a twist on the classic Margarita with a kick of Coroninta or KGB vodka on a base of tequila. They are colorful, refreshing, and fun; they are the perfect drink to cool yourself down from those muggy summer nights that are just around the corner. The Beerritas with Coronita are 12,000 won while the ones with KGB vodka are 15,000 won. Caliente has also updated its food menu, adding a few appetizers to the mix. The most outstanding one was the calamari and onion rings. The secret

batter for the rings was just perfectly seasoned and fried. It had a nice golden tinge to it and a delightfully crispy texture. I wouldn't have stopped eating them if it wasn't for the fact that there was still more food coming. A plate of fried calamari and onion rings will set you back a mere 7,000 won and it's well worth it.

Changing menus can be either a hit or a miss, but Caliente has proved that it knows what's hot this season. You'll definitely enjoy the new menu items, and will probably want to try them all in one night. Just make sure you bring lots of friends with you, because the food is plentiful.

Have you ever had fajitas in Daegu? This Tex-Mex staple has finally arrived to Caliente. The carefully arranged dish comes with grilled veggies, a heaping portion of steak strips, and well-seasoned rice and beans topped with grated Jack cheese. Of course, you also get soft tortillas, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream, to round out some delicious, hot tacos. And what's a good bar without chicken wings? Well, it's just not a good bar. Thankfully, Caliente now carries some of the best wings in town. At 9,000 won a plate, you can now combine the beer sampler and the wings to have your own alternative chicken and beer (ěš˜맼) night!

Hot Gossip Chic and Sophisticated Lounge in Daegu Written and photographed by Brian Van Hise

You know, sometimes when I go to nightclubs, I take a conscious moment to remove myself from the dazzling lights, DJ beats, and alcohol-induced buzz and think to myself: What does this place actually look like in daylight? After all, most clubs and bars bask under the soft glow of cleverly-situated lighting, creating atmosphere and style that can make or break an establishment’s success. Daegu’s recently-opened Hot Gossip is certainly a chic and posh lounge, one with upscale tables, sofas, and yes...the soft lights. Not that Hot Gossip is trying to cover anything. I imagine it looks just as flashy and pretty 12

in the daytime as it does at night. But, they got it right. Walking the red carpet from the street into the tall, wide open entrance will make you feel as if the giant gates of a kingdom are being opened for your arrival. A quick step inside a you’ll be welcomed by staff who are eager to seat you. Some will even speak English to you as they show you to an available table. After sitting down, one must take a moment to appreciate the beauty of design inside this place. Royal hues of purples and gold reach out from the far walls, while an intrinsic brick design makes you think you’re visiting an old cathedral or dungeon that has been converted. Daegu Nightlife - Hot Gossip

http://daegucompass.com

The drink menu is extensive. Vodka bottle services are offered: Smirnoff, Absolut, Grey Goose, and Ciroc, ranging from 100~160,000won per bottle. Varieties of gin, tequila, and whiskey too are available in bottles. Not that kind of high roller? Then maybe you’re better suited for the 30+ cocktails offered (lowest price starts at 7,000won). Martinis, margaritas, mojitos...Hot Gossip’s menu loaded with goodies. But maybe you’re there for one thing only: to get drunk. In that case, just skip straight to the Fireshot & Bomb part of the menu. Ranging from 9~12,000won, these shots will have you on the floor faster than that ajosshi passed out at Banwoldang. And, for those of you who just want to be with friends but aren’t in a drinking mood, there’s a short non-alcoholic portion of the menu as well.

As with any trendy club in Korea, it’s best to look your best when visiting Hot Gossip. So, dig out that suit and tie or dust off those heels. Next ladies night or guys night might be best spent under the glow of Hot Gossip’s stunning and relaxing interior atmosphere.

Every Kid's Wish List Daegu Baby & Kids Fair 2014 Written by Brian Van Hise / Phots by Daegu EXCO Event Team

Being a kid in May is a great thing in Korea. In early May, the country celebrates Children's Day and this year, in the middle of the month, Daegu parents and children can build some quality time together at EXCO. From May 15th—18th, the Daegu Metropolitan City, in conjunction with EXCO, will host the Daegu Baby & Kids Fair 2014. EXCO will become the largest playground in Korea, showcasing a total of 650 booths and representing over 270 different companies. Not a parent yet? No worries. Expecting parents should check out the Pregnancy and Baby Supplies portion of the event. Everything you might imagine for a newborn baby can be found here: pregnancy supplies and services, baby food, infant safety supplies, and feminine 16

products. That’s a lot of Pampers! Channel your inner Tiger Mom at the Early Childhood Education Supplies area which is sure to fit the wishlists of any nursery or kindergarten teacher: study materials and supplies, an educational institute, playing facilities, educational toys, electronic devices, children’s furniture and even English education necessities. Get there early to avoid the lines. The Korean government has been very "gung-ho" lately about encouraging childbirth. This, and the fact that parents are simply spending more on their children these days has made this fair increasingly popular in recent years. This time around, be sure to enjoy our baby walker race. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Daegu All Set To Become Beautiful Once Again The Daegu Beauty Expo 2014 Written by Kenneth Quillinan / Photos by Daegu EXCO Event Team

Once again, the warm weather is almost upon us here in Daegu. It is time to pack away our winter woollies and expose our beautiful selves to the summer sun. It is also around this time of year that everyone starts to feel better about themselves, as the winter blues are locked away until the end of the year. The 2014 Daegu Beauty Expo, which will take place from May 23rd until May 25th at the Daegu EXCO, is must attend event ahead of the imminent hot weather. If you are interested in looking good this summer, this is not to be missed. The event, which will be hosted by the Daegu Metropolitan City, and is being organized by the Korea Beauty Industry Development Institute, The Korea Central Estheticians Association and Daegu EXCO, will be twice the 20

size as it previous exhibition, which was held in October, last year. Over 13,000 people took part in last year’s event, but this year it is expected that over 20,000 will be in attendance. In addition to the 400 booths being exhibited by 120 companies, there will be 20 beauty shows and seminars on display, so you can expect all the information and entertainment you require to be available at this event. Earlier this year, a national nail license was introduced to Korea, so there will be an array of notorious and successful nail beauty companies present, such as Gyeongansa, Nail City and Christian Babara. If you are interested in learning more about local fash-

ion, including Korean eyewear and jewelry, the Total Beauty Zone is a must visit. Cosmetics will take center stage in this zone, but it will not just be limited to this as there will be a vast amount of items on display, all of which will assist you in ‘beautifying’ yourself.

There will be also be a large number of prizes on offer throughout the exhibition. Beauty benefits on a firstcome-first-serve basis, a stamp rally, and a Facebook event giveaway are just some of the events that will offer up prizes to participating contestants.

Local herbal and medicinal cosmetics companies based in and around Daegu and Gyeongbuk, will promote products that are readily available if you reside in this area. One of the main projects that Daegu is acknowledged for is its Medi-tourism. Plastic surgery and Dermatology clinics are scattered throughout the city, and if you are seeking more information about the services they offer, this exhibition is the place to be.

An Gook-joong, the Director of Economy and Trade was recently quoted as saying, ‘’The Beauty industry is essential to Daegu, so we will support it continuously. As part of this initiative, we will continue to promote the Daegu Beauty Expo and the positive effect it has on the city."

This year, visitors can experience a large range of beauty services available at a variety of locations throughout the hall. These include a Beauty Change zone; May Romance; a Wedding Experience Zone; a Make-up for Parents Zone; a Couple Make-up Zone; a Massage Zone and a Nail and Hena Zone. There is so much to see and do; maybe one day will not be enough!

Free admission for the three days will be provided for those who pre-register on www.beautyexpo.kr . The event will run from 10am-6pm from Friday, May 23rd until Sunday, May 25th throughout the EXCO exhibition halls.

Colorful Daegu in Full Bloom The Daegu Flower Show 2014 Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos by Daegu EXCO Event Team

Spring in South Korea is a veritable flower lover’s paradise, with everything blooming in startling whites, reds, yellows, and purples. The color, unfortunately, does not last forever, so for our flower fixes, we must look elsewhere. In early June, look no further than the Daegu Flower Show 2014.

by event coordinators through a demanding application process, to build larger, more elaborate floral designs than ever before. This year’s theme is “Flower Road Trip,” which is surely not as psychedelic as it sounds. “Flower power” notwithstanding, horticulture fans should be pumped.

Hosted by Daegu Metropolitan City and organized by EXCO, the Daegu Flower Show 2014 brings together the best floral displays and flower companies from across South Korea. In its five years of existence, the event has grown rapidly into the best indoor flower show on the peninsula, with several high-profile companies participating. In particular, the Theme Zone was widely expanded this year allowing designers, who were chosen

Event organizers have arranged an astonishing volume of plant life for this event, with wild flower, orchid, bonsai, pressed flower, and preserved flower displays in the mix. These 13,000 square meters of botanist nirvana will also include BEST Booth awards, gardening exhibits, horticulture displays, and a Hands-on Experience Zone.

In addition, patrons can look forward to several smaller events to pique their inner Professor Sprout. A Flower Design Contest, Flower PET Contest, Flower Giveaway, Flower Arranging Demonstration, On-Site Flower Classes, a Photo On-Spot booth, and a Planting Nursery Flowers exhibit should cover any and all flower-related interests. A number of these events will take place in the Outdoor Square, taking the expo to the street to encourage a more festive mood. All told, EXCO should be beautiful that time of year.

Admission is 7,000 won, or 4,000 won with advance registration. Bring your family and friends and enjoy an afternoon amongst the delicate petals and sweet perfumes of the flowers. All green thumbs are welcome, but it’s probably best to leave your pet rhododendron at home.

Not to be missed is the Flower Mini Concert which should be a real treat, appealing to all you hydrangea-loving horn players out there. I’ve always said that botany and Beethoven go together like, well you know. Joking aside, a live musical performance amidst a cornucopia of fresh flowers sounds like a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Cosplay in Japan Heats Up Animation Festival in Japan Brings out Your Favorite Cosplay Characters Written and Photographed by Monique Ryan

AnimeCons? What is that??? If you live here in Korea, you see the cute drawings and characters everywhere. Most of them are drawn as "anime". Anime is a way of drawing that originated in Japan and that has developed into something very, very interesting: Anime Conventions and Cosplays...... Though an outsider might think Japan "stole" comics from the West, this is not true. Japan has been making cartoonish art for a very long time, all the way back to the early 20th century, when Japanese film makers experimented with animation techniques. The making of Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs profoundly influenced many Japanese animators, but its main features, such as simple lines and stylized features, are distinctly Japanese. In the 1960, manga artist and animator Osamu Tezuka, adapted and simplified many Disney animation techniques to reduce costs and to limit the number of frames in productions. He intended this as a temporary, cost saving measure, but it took hold. Tezuka is considered the "father", or "God", of manga. Today, a single anime episode can cost between $100,000 and $300,000 to produce. Anime and manga are very different than Western cartoons and animated films. They tend to contain a sense of spiritual optimism, and not just simplistic good-overevil stuff. "Villains" can improve and find redemption, unhappy heroes can find themselves through personal crisis, and in doing so, find happiness, difficulties occur but through hard work, they can be overcome. Anime and manga tend to show that life has meaning and pur28

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.MAY

pose, though it must be fought for. It emphasizes that strength is found from helping others, even to the point of self-sacrifice. In Japanese culture, children's comics and animation deal with things like death. In series like Gundam, you can see that the enemies have hopes and dreams of their own, and do, in fact, have reasons for what they do. They aren't just crazy, or just plain evil. They're real. So it is not surprising that Anime and manga quickly build a large fan base. Anime Clubs gave rise to Anime Conventions in the 1990's. These conventions vary from small, one anime specific events to enormous, industry driven events with thousands of dedicated fans in attendance. They are multi-day events hosted at convention centers, hotels and even college campuses. Anime conventions are also used as a vehicle for industry, in which studios, distributors, and publishers represent their anime related releases. The original Comiket, based on fan published manga, started in 1975 with around 700 people in Tokyo. At conventions these days there are vendors of all things anime, panels where "voice actors" do interviews (and fans become hysterical), drawing competitions, and a whole new element - Cosplay! Cosplay, short for "costume play", is not unique to anime and has become popular in contests and masquerades at anime conventions. Japanese culture and words have entered English usage through the popularity of the medium, including Otaku, a derogatory Japanese term commonly used in English to denote a fan of

anime and manga. I happen to have a daughter that is an Otaku. Payton is a talented artist who was drawn to anime because of the way they are drawn. A friend of ours at Fort Bliss introduced us to Anime Conventions and Payton started to Cosplay. Cosplay means that you dress as your favorite anime character - it even includes weaponry and props. It can be very expensive as the outfits, replica weapons, and accessories are only manufactured by a small number of suppliers. The best places to find them are either on Ebay or, better yet, Amazon. When our family received orders to come to Korea, one of the main reasons our daughter could not wait to come was the proximity to Japan and therefore the proximity to All Things Anime!!! This year was the first year that Tokyo hosted the "AnimeJapan" - formerly known as the Tokyo International Anime Fair. It was held in March at Odaiba's Big Sight Convention Center. It is the premier convention of the Japanese animation industry and one of the largest animation related events in the world. Guess who got to attend? I took my daughter and two of her friends for her birthday. If you have never been to an Anime Convention, I highly recommend you try it while you are here in Korea. The sounds, visual assault on your senses and the overall enthusiasm of the convention are overwhelming! It is incredibly interesting to see all of the professional Cosplayers - they even have handlers! Normally each convention has an area where professional Cosplayers are located and professional photographers are taking their pictures. Mingling amongst them are the amateur Cosplayers, some hoping to be "discovered" and some just there to share their enthusiasm. I never realized the impact of us being "Westerners" when we attend and my daughters and their friends cosplay. Photographers will bombard you with requests for pictures. In the US, pictures are taken constantly with or without your permission. Here in Korea and Japan, each photographer will ask you for permission first and most will hand you their business card so you can see they truly are professionals (yes, there are some weirdoes out there) and it allows you to see the pictures on their websites. What is more endearing to me is seeing the reaction of my daughter and her friends to the other amateur and professional Cosplayers and their reaction to them. Each group is sooo exited to have their picture taken with each other. I watch my daughter and her friends say "I can't believe they took a picture with us!" and I see the other Cosplayers have the same reaction. There is barely a

language barrier and that is a beautiful thing! Here in Korea there is an AnimeCon at the end of every month. One month it will be in Busan, called Busan Comic World, at BEXCO and the next it will be in Seoul. The ones in Seoul are harder to get to due to the longer travel but the one is Busan is wonderful. Here is the website: http://www.comicw.co.kr - unfortunately it is only available in Korean so you may have to get a Korean speaking friend to help you with translation. The cost for a ticket is only 3000 KRW and most of the items you can purchase (key chains, posters, buttons etc) are 500 KRW and up but very affordable. If you are looking for something to do with the kids or you just want to spend the day people watching, I highly recommend making a visit to an AnimeCon!

A First Timer Gets a Beauty Facial Feel Young Again at SkinCare 5000 Written and photographed by Alex A-che

Coming out of a cold Daegu winter that left my skin dry and tired, I needed some “me time” desperately. For years my friends recommended going to a spa for a facial. So for the first time ever, I headed to SkinCare 5000, a wonderfully convenient spa located in the heart of downtown for a much needed facial. A block away from Novotel, it caters to various foreigners visiting Daegu on business trips and vacation. Acne treatments are very popular here, most of her customers are in their 20’s and 30’s and include both men and women. They do full body oil massages for women, and only back massages for men. The wedding package includes special mask treatments for both the groom and bride 32

before the wedding. They also include waxing in the package. They have a special “diet” program, which is a special oil massage program that helps you lose weight by heating and tightening your skin and being worn while sleeping. While you wait, you could also do your own nails, or surf the Internet. Consultation Walking in, I was warmly welcomed by the staff and escorted to change into comfortable cotton clothes. They gave me a fruity delicious tea, a diet drink that they also sell in store and I would recommend just simply for the

taste alone. Using a special camera, the staff took pictures of my cheeks, forehead and chin. It was quite alarming seeing my face zoomed in to such an extreme and seeing things I didn’t realize I had. She measured the elasticity of my skin, checked for wrinkles, blackheads, and finally dry skin. Koreans are noted for having dry skin on their face because of constant scrubbing they are accustomed to doing. The only dry skin was on my cheeks, while my T-zone was oily. A bit complicated, she advised me on what package deal to get so that it would cater to my skin. They would do a deep cleansing on my T-zone, using a high quality serum to revitalize my skin. For a one-time visit it would cost 65,000 WON. If I did a ten-visit package deal, it would be a session of 50,000 WON, plus a special oil removal treatment, called Nose Scaling. When I agreed to her recommendation, we headed into the main massage room. Cleaning The first step was a simple cleaning, which included the aesthetician carefully taking the makeup off my face. It was the gentlest way I’ve ever had makeup removed. Deep Cleansing I got the special Nose Scaling on my nose and chin. While the ointment pulled out the oil from my skin, I got a shoulder massage. It was exactly what I needed, as all my stress tends to congregate on my shoulders. She was quite gentle, a nice change from some of the other painful massages I’ve gotten. After a few minutes, she proceeded to scrap off the oil that had surfaced. The oil removal was clearly visible, and she scraped at my nose and chin with a chisel-looking device that buzzed through my skin. Truth be told, it reminded me of the duck fat that I had leftover on my plate during dinner earlier that week. Face Massage My favorite part of the process was the face massage. A special cream was placed on my face, a gel that would protect my skin. Using a special warm apparatus, she went over my face, rubbing it with its high frequency waves that went through various layers of my skin. It felt so good, like warm sleek oil vibrating through my face. -continued on p34-

Ample Serum Afterwards, a high-quality moisturizing serum was placed on my skin, and massaged softly into it. This stuff is high quality, a people will pay a lot of money for these style of serums. Aloe Pack Aloe was placed on my skin to hydrate it, and then gauze was used to cover it. The whitening mud mask was placed over it. Whitening Mud Mask The packaged deal included a whitening mask. Red flags went up immediately, as I thought like many foreigners do, that whitening would mean that the mask would lighten my skin. I was extremely wrong. Lost in translation somewhere, I think a lot of Westerners think that these products that have whitening (like sunscreen) would lighten skin. Koreans use the word “whitening” to mean “brightening”, a product that will revitalize and refresh the skin. It has nothing to do with chemically lightening your skin. Once that was all explained, I was

excited to get the mask. The mud mask is made from algae, feeling thick and hardening over my skin. It was easily removable once the gauze was pulled off under it. I left the spa feeling deliciously rejuvenated. I could feel a clear difference on my face, the feeling lasting until the next day. Co-workers and friends noticed the difference, my skin felt so smooth and refreshed. I highly recommend treating yourself to a facial here at SkinCare 5000. Bring a Korean friend with you to fully understand the process, get a facial together and enjoy pampering yourselves for a few hours.

Get Cultural at CulCom Daegu's Culture Complex for Korean Language Learners Written and photographed by Brian Van Hise

Ever felt stifled in your Korean language learning? Like maybe you’ve plateaued a bit in your studies and need a boost? Or maybe you’ve studied lots of grammar but are having a hard time using it with constructive feedback? Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner of Korean, Daegu’s Culture Complex language exchange system is for you. The classes work like this: foreigners register for a free Korean-speaking class at the Culture Complex (CulCom) and engage in an hour and a half of speaking practice, based on their level. In return, the foreigners remain on site for an additional hour to provide English speaking practice to Koreans. This exchange enables 40

the coursework to be free of charge to all participating foreigners. “This is for foreigners who are really interested in speaking,” says SuJeong Park, who currently manages the Daegu branch of CulCom. “They may buy [grammar] books themselves and study but if they want some place to practice, then this is going to be a really nice place.” CulCom was first started in Seoul and currently has 13 branches there. Ever expanding, CulCom has an office in Busan and Tokyo, and as of last year, one here in Daegu. About 30 Korean teachers, leaders, and office staff

es. Some foreigners come here and think this place is going to be a meeting place. We don’t want that.” To curb this, Ms. Park pre-screens all applicants to get a feel for their character and personality.

Classes require purchasing no books or materials. Photocopies of required texts are prepared in advance by the teachers. The only associated cost with the courses is a 50,000won deposit made after the first lesson. “The first class is always a trial,” Park explains. This deposit ensures that the students feel committed to the program and can be refunded after 3 months of participation.

In addition to the classes, CulCom also holds regular events and sometimes more engaging activities. They host a monthly party in their office for all members, which usually trickles out to an after party downtown. They have arranged a group trip to Gyeungju, held a seminar on making fusion pizza, and even held an overnight camping trip. This year, they have plans to arrange a trip to Busan and possibly get some group seats at a Samsung Lions game.

CulCom is always accepting new students and offers classes to match any schedule. Morning classes and evening classes are available. Classes are set up to meet twice a week. Ms. Park stresses the importance of managing good and effective language exchanges. She says that sometimes people join to find boyfriends or girlfriends and that it has been a problem in the past. “The Koreans coming here are really interested in language exchang-

CulCom’s future seems bright. Already having many multi-cultural students, they plan on expanding their study opportunities. “We are trying to create new language clubs, like Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, and French.” She sits forward in her chair, eager to explain. “We have French class in the morning. It’s just a small group who wants to learn French communication.”

Treasure Hunt Stompy Ruffers Gets Ready for Summer Written and photographed by Brian Van Hise

Stompy Ruffers Cultural Fusion has a mission to better connect American culture with Korean culture through fun events, food, and activities. Keeping in tune with that mission, we invite all puzzle lovers, sleuths, and treasure hunters to join us for the kickoff of the Great Daegu Treasure Hunt on Saturday, May 17th!

head-scratching moments for those who partake in the hunt. This kind of hunt is called an “armchair treasure hunt” but what is that exactly?

Free to all and requiring no registration, clever thinkers can converge on our website and Facebook page to begin solving the ten puzzles of the event. Using one’s own intellect and logic, the correct answers to the puzzles will lead to the location of an actual, concealed treasure! When found, and after verification by Stompy Ruffers, the lucky winner will receive a cash prize of KRW 100,000.

In 2002, New York street magician David Blaine published a biography / history of magic book called, Mysterious Stranger. Inside the book was an armchair treasure hunt. Cryptograms, riddles, and bizarre decorative patterns had to be properly deciphered and ordered to make a sensible “treasure map” which then led to a real treasure hidden in the United States. After a year and a half, the puzzle was finally solved, the treasure found, and the winner awarded $100,000.

We built the puzzle over the past six months, having selected our treasure location in the fall of 2013. The puzzle-building process has been a fun one and one which we feel will provide many fun and possibly

With the advent and mass usage of GPS, geocaching is a similar sport many expats engage in when living abroad or traveling. Geo-cachers often hide small containers, called caches, usually filled with a small note-

pad and pencil or other trinkets. They then note the GPS coordinates and think up a few clever clues to post. Then, participants try to find the small cache and after doing so, jot down their name and report back to the website that the cache has been found. It’s a thrill-ofthe-hunt excitement. In the same spirit, we are excited to encourage participation in our hunt. It’s open to all ages and will be challenging for both Koreans and expats alike. The puzzles consist of a mix of Korean and English language, so at least some basic knowledge of both will be required. Feeling a little rusty in your skills? Why not grab a Korean friend and make a team? Once the hunt opens, it will not close until the treasure has been found. Think you have what it takes to be the fortunate winner? Cheongnamdae The Blue House of the Southern Region Written and Photographed by Alex D. Johnson / Translated by Ji Yeon Suh

During the 2002 Korean presidential election one of candidate Roh, Moo-hyun’s campaign promises was to open the Presidential Villa in Cheongwon-gu, Chungcheongbuk-do to the public. With his election as the 9th President of Korea, the villa known as Cheongnamdae was opened to public the on April 18, 2003. The Presidential Villa was built in 1983 after former president Chun Doo-hwan visited the area for the opening of the Daecheong Dam in 1980. The Villa was used by former presidents a total of 88 times before it was opened to the public. Cheongnamdae is now a museum portraying how the former presidents of Korea spent their retreats.

I visited Cheongnamdae about 10 years ago and at that time it was one of the hottest tickets in Korea and there was a lot more propaganda about how the former presidents lived a privileged lifestyle. Half-drunk bottles of whisky were on display and stories about how rain never touched the ground on the walkway to the club house

because there was always a tarp covering the path. At that time, golf was considered a sport of the rich and the tour guides emphasized the elite lifestyle the presidents had by golfing and playing at Cheongnamdae. Nowadays it is more of a memorial to all the past presidents and how they enjoyed their leisure time. Since my last visit they have added a lot more facilities so people can enjoy the natural environment of the area.

The grounds consists of a museum of former presidents, the Presidential Villa, golf course, club house

and walking trails. One of the most interesting things about Cheongnamdae is seeing how the former presidents spent their leisure time. Each president had his own favorite sport and activities and the equipment they used is on display in the museum along with artifacts from the house. You can even see a Miami Vice era cigarette boat and a cruising boat that the presidents used along with golf carts and jet skis. The Presidential Villa is like a time capsule from the 80’s and 90’s. The formal dining room, living room and bedrooms that the presidents used are open for viewing. Visitors can also see a swimming pool, tennis court and other facilities. A loop walking trail will take you around the grounds and to an observation deck where you can see a great view of the lake and surrounding areas.

While walking the grounds the remnants of a security system that protected former presidents is still evident. Barbed wire, cameras and steel fences surround the grounds. A kind staff member even pointed out that the line of buoys that span the entrance of the lagoon are actually a steel fence underwater to protect from infiltration. While most of the security aspects of the grounds are played down the beauty of the location is what most people will remember. Walking trails, fish ponds and beautiful views are the real gems of this destination. After almost ten years and changes in political parties in the Blue House it is interesting to see how Cheognamdae has evolved into a great place for a little history and a lot of beautiful scenery.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

Connoisseur Check out these other great eats around town.

Apsan Area Gooksu Gooksu is known for its 'slow food' approach when preparing its delicious dishes for customers. Slow food doesn't mean it takes hours to cook, it just means everything is made from scratch. The restaurant has an Italian Firenze style atmosphere and serve fabulous pasta dishes. It is also famous for its T-bone steak and Ripieno pizza. Try it tonight! Your taste buds won't be disappointed. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 053-625-1365 • 2, Hyeonchungro7-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

12 Kitchen & Bar Homemade style pizza and pasta are on the menu at 12 Kitchen & Bar. The chef and owner, Yoon Gyeong-su, has studied in Italy and brought back some amazing recipes. The restaurant uses organic vegetables and ingredients from their own farm. If you are a meat lover and looking for the best steak in Daegu, this may be the place to come. 1kg of succulent, juicy T-bone steak served with roasted potatoes and garlic is a mouth watering, inducing thought just waiting to fill your appetite. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 11:30AM~10:30PM • 053-652-8007 • 41-1, Hyunchoong-ro, Nam-gu, Daegu

Bongdeok-dong Area Hamimami's The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Come on down to HamiMami's and experience a bit of home. 8AM~9PM(break time for weekdays : 3PM~5PM) • closed on Mondays 053-475-5242 • 87, Samjeong-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

Daebong-dong Barazi Barazi brings Japanese flair to Daegu. Barazi specializes in great Japanese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a home away from home. The soothing atmosphere provides customers a chance to relax with a cup of tea or some warm saki! The owner of Barazi is also an expert florist and can help arrange all your floral needs. Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. <Daeghan News> 12PM~12AM • 053-423-3990 • 6, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu <Two Ppul> 5PM~1AM • 053-422-1033 • 7-15, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Pic&iq VIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reservation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 6PM~11PM • 053-253-9782 • 2232-15, Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu closed on Sundays

Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
