The first day will start with the performance of Korea's top brass big band "Volcano Little Big Band". Also, you can see the living legend of electronic bass, Ernesto Holman’s Ernesto Holman Etnojazz Trio (Chile). You can also see SundRi Feeling (France), who plays interesting and poetic jazz, and Naked (Serbia) showcasing traditional Balkan music with a swing and free- jazz influence.

On the second day, the young band, Ehud Ettun Trio (Israel) will show why Israel is so very good at jazz. Jennifer Souza (Brazil), a singer-songwriter, will remind you of Joni Mitchell. Seo Mihyun, a top-class female drummer from Korea, will deliver her passion and sensibility with her band, SEO MIHYUN TRIO (Korea). Lastly, Vox Sambou, originally from Haiti and based in Canada, comes to Korea as part of his world tour. He will showcase a whole different kind of jazz, incorporating afrobeat, hip-hop, and reggae into his sound. Also, the Fringe Stage will host young jazz musicians, including Park Yeryung Trio, TRIAD, and JAZZ BUS, thus expanding the scale of the festival. Invited artists are popular in their local music scene and the festival wants to incorporate various world music, rooted in jazz, to satisfy the individual tastes of the audience. Also, they will prepare subsidiary events, food stalls, and hands-on experience booths. They anticipate an even larger audience than last year. Lee Byeong-bae, the chief of the Dalseo Culture Foundation and festival organizer, said “We will have enhanced stage performances with a very special lineup. We expect that a lot of jazz enthusiasts and locals will come to listen to music. JAZZ IN DAEGU will stepup and grow as Dalsoegu’s proud international music festival.”

Tomatillo The New Mexican Restaurant in Town
In the US, Mexican restaurants are as common as a Kim Pasa in Korea due to the country bordering Mexico and the over 33 million Hispanics residing Stateside. However, discovering an authentic Mexican establishment outside America is as elusive as spotting a leopard on safari. So, when I heard there was a new Mexican restaurant in town - Tomatillo - I immediately went to check it out. 12

It took some exploring to locate this compact establishment nestled amongst the many buildings of the new shopping and business complex around the Daegu Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (CCEI). After weaving my way to Park Mall B, I finally spot the metallic gold English lettering words I’d been looking for - ‘Mexican Pub & Grill.’
http://www.daegucompass.com
With trepidation, I open the door. Inside, I’m greeted with several six-seater bar stool tables - subdued industrial lighting overhead - and a 20 foot long booth that lines an entire wall where the diner’s companions sit opposite in hunter-green leather-covered chairs accented with brass buttons. The metallic gold theme continues with a sheet of back-lit, cut-out crosses adorning the wall to the open kitchen. The mood is a cozy mix of NY bar and sleek cafe. Not a sombrero or maraca in sight. I eye up my seating options. The place is surprisingly full, given a Wednesday night and it’s off the main drag location. Noticing my overwhelmed ‘newbie’ look, a friendly middle-aged Korean woman dining with her two children, smilingly speaks to me in English, ‘You can sit wherever you want.’ I settle into the booth seat next to her.
DAEGU COMPASS MAY 2017
I hoist up the the two-inch thick leather bound menu. It immediately becomes apparent that choosing just one dish is going to be a challenge. I scour the extensive selection - which gratefully has at least the menus titles in English: tacos, chimichangas, burritos, quesadillas, tostada salads and fajita platters. With each section having a two-page spread with filling options from steak, chicken, pork, shrimp, Baja fish, and veggie, I become overwhelmed and attempt to make a decision on an alcoholic beverage instead. However, the drinks menu is as equally impressive. I analyze the choices: a selection of draft beers from the South Korean microbrewery North Fort, my favorite bottled brew Big Wave, and even a frozen margarita.

After much deliberation, I settle on the Baja fish tacos, a side of chips and salsa, and a Purple IPA. Despite seven other groups dining, I don’t wait long for my food. The presentation is appetizing and authentic with the two tacos stacked in a traditional metal W-shaped rack. On closer inspection, I discover that the tacos are built from flour tortillas instead of corn and are lined with a sliver of grilled shredded cheddar. I take a bite. The generously topped cabbage and tomato slaw spills onto my plate and reveals a sizable portion of crispy battered white fish on the bottom. The indiscernible sauce - very different to the typical sriracha-spiked white sauce - oozes onto my fingertips. Despite the variances, I decide to award the overall taste 4 chilis, mainly for the likable crunch the ‘cheese skirt’ adds.

Next, I delve into the chips and salsa. The homemade crunch of tortillas and the chunky fresh tomatoes of the pico de gallo transport me to my favorite Arizona cantina. Mid-chomp the Korean lady next to me warmly starts a conversation. “They usually have a Mexican chef in the kitchen. He isn’t here today.” Optimistically, I hope that is the cause of the pureed, out of the jar tasting guacamole. My only disappointment in the meal. I later learn the growing franchise has a policy to employ native cooks in order to maintain authenticity and not overly tweak the dishes to appeal to the Korean palette.

My new friend continues to inform me excitedly. “There are several branches in Seoul, but this is the first one in Daegu.” I suddenly notice that in the near capacity 38 seater, I’m the only waygook. “And If you come at the weekend, come early. Last weekend we had to wait 40 minutes!,” she quickly advises. As I slurp the last drop of tequila from the brain-freeze inducing margarita the owner bestowed on me, my shameful preconceptions of Korean’s tastebuds implode. Of all the far-flung corners of the world I’ve searched for an authentic Mexican, the last place I’d expect to find such an establishment was in conservative Daegu, South Korea.

Pigs Out Of Their Blanket Shinsegae's DimDimSum
• Written and photographed by Michael Clark Translated by Yujeong Lee
I’m usually not a big fan of soft steamed or boiled rice, noodles or dumplings; rarely do I run across anything that really peaks my interest. I tend to be more of a crispy, crunchy, “firmware” sort of guy, looking for some resistance when I bite down on something, but, I must say, I’ve had a recent turn of thought. So, what I’m talking about here is what’s called “Dim Sum” or a traditional Chinese steamed dumpling or “Mandu” type of dish. They consist of different kinds of fillings, wrapped by a thin layer of paper, similar to a miniature burrito or lumpia kind of venue, but Asian style, with rice paper, usually moistened and formed around Kimchi, various kinds of cooked vegetables, meats, rice, and just about anything you can imagine, and I mean that quite literally. There is even a dessert style Dim Sum as I discovered at DimDimSum.

Anyhow, over at one of my favorite new places to spend money and eat food, Shinsegae’s new mega store, located adjacent Dongdaegu Station, on the eighth floor, is a cool little restaurant called DimDimSum, appropriately serving all kinds of these delectable little dumplings in all shapes, forms, sizes and flavors, sure to please just about any palate - even a guy like me, that really doesn’t go out of his way to get dumplings. The place is very clean, the staff is polite and responsive, and the seating area is large enough to host individuals, couples, and small and even medium to large groups. The atmosphere is quaint and almost calm, even though just below you have the massive shopping complex. The cost is what I would call medium-range. It’s not like your curbside dumplings, but it’s not going to break your wallet either. If you want to try something different, or even if you have had Dim Sum in the past, you got to try this place at least once, to see the variety of dumplings they have and how they are presented. It’s really worth a go, in my “not so dumpling” opinion.
So, what is a Dim Sum exactly? A traditional dim sum brunch includes various types of steamed buns such as cha siu bao (a steamed bun filled with barbecue pork), dumplings and rice noodle rolls, which contain a range -continued on p18-

of ingredients, including beef, chicken, pork, prawns, and vegetarian options. Many dim sum restaurants also offer plates of steamed green vegetables, roasted meats, congee and other soups. Dessert dim sum is also available and many places offer the customary egg tart. Dim sum is usually eaten as breakfast. Dim sum can be cooked by steaming and frying, among other methods. The serving sizes are usually small and normally served as three or four pieces in one dish. It is customary to order family style, sharing dishes among all members of the dining party. Because of the small portions, people can try a wide variety of food.

Move Over Downtown Daegu Maekju Sikdang (맥주 식당) • Written and photgraphed by Sarah Lee Translated by Yujeong Lee
Located in downtown Duryu, you will find similar bars in this area such as Salon de Coco; but this place is a lot less crowded and gives a much more relaxed vibe. Hidden a little away from the busy streets of downtown Duryu, the cosy restaurant is nestled in the residential area - away from the hustle and bustle but easily accessible. When my friend mentioned it for the first time, I wasn't very convinced it would be that great of a place, considering the name being slightly generic. I gave it a shot anyway. We went out of Duryu station and walked toward downtown Duryu, Maekju Sikdang was tucked away in an alley. Finally, we saw the simple black exterior of the restaurant sitting there surrounded by apartments. We were greeted by the friendly manager, Aiden along with the menu. The interior was decorated with concrete walls, paintings and artsy flowers floating above us and they had that perfect warm, low key lighting that makes you look extra sexy. It felt very intimate and relaxing. It reminded me of my favorite bar back home with a touch of Korean, where you can just have a few beers, talk and chill with your friends.

The menu is in Korean, but Aiden speaks excellent English. They have a range of beer you can choose from, from Kozel Dark (6,800 won) and Kronenbourg (7,500 won) to their craft beer of German Weizen (5,500 won), Indian Pale Ale (8,500 won) and Bourbon Barrel Stout (15,000 won). They also have other drinks such as your classic Gin and Tonic (7,000 won), Jack and Coke (7,500 won), Jameson (6,000 won) and nonalcoholic drinks such as Red Orange Sparkling Juice (5,000 won) and Coke (4,000 won). 또한 기본적인 진앤토닉(7천원), 잭앤코크(7 천5백원), 제임슨(6천원), 레드오렌지 스파클링 주스(5천원), 콜라(4천원)과 같은 논알콜 음료 등 다른 드링크 메뉴도 있 다. sitting under a large bed of freshly fried fries with a side of ketchup, house dipping sauce and pickled garlic stems which had a refreshing taste to it and a satisfying crunch. Next, we had the Corn Cheese Nachos (13,000 won), it was packed with melting cheese and generous layers of corn and chili and bits of almonds (which you can request to exclude if you’re allergic to nuts) and it can definitely be shared with three or more people. Lastly, we had the Boqueria Gambas (13,000 won for ten pieces): fat, juicy shrimps covered in good quality olive oil, a little dried chili and a side of toasted slices of bread. The simple olive oil sauce was so good, we couldn't resist mopping that up completely with our carb.

Maekju Sikdang also has outdoor seating, great for a group of five to eight to start the night off. However, the area is closed at 10pm in consideration of the residents around the area. (They also have clean toilets with soap!) Our overall experience was exceptional, definitely coming back with more of our friends in the near future. This will be your new favorite place to hangout. Directions to get to Maekju Sikdang: Get off at Duryu Station Exit 7. Walk toward downtown Duryu and head straight two full blocks, turn left to the alleyway and then turn right at the end of the alley. The restaurant will be on your right.

Getting Naked In Daegu
• Written and photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva [http://memoriesnotmaterialthings.com] Translated by Yujeong Lee
My First Jjimjilbang Experience
My life philosophy is collect experiences not stuff. Yet with just one month left on my teaching contract, I still hadn’t ventured to a jjimjilbang. I love hot tubs and saunas, but I wasn’t sure about relaxing in them naked. Deciding this was my last opportunity, I finally plucked up the fortitude to visit Elybaden Spa near Sangin. I set out for West Daegu with rising levels of anxiety building. My wholesale ignorance of Korean jjimjilbangs isn’t the only cause for the unease. It’s the daunting challenge of navigating this foreign-concept with zero Korean and doing it in the buff. Before I’m ready, I find myself standing in front of the five-story complex.

I courageously enter and immediately I’m faced with a registration desk. I gingerly walk up to a free attendant. Between a mix of Konglish and gestures, I sputter out ‘Annyeonghaseyo. Jjimjilbang, ne. Waterpark, ayino.’ She miraculously understands that I only want entry to the sauna and not the combined ticket that includes the waterpark. She presents me with a waterproof wristband, which I later learn is both your locker keys and a chargecard allowing you to purchase food, drink and amenities without carrying around cash.
http://www.daegucompass.com
Gaining confidence, I go through the turnstiles and meticulously follow the women in front. I’m directed to the shoe lockers on my right. I locate my designated locker number, remove my ballet pumps, and enter the segregated changing facilities. Inside, I exchange my paper ticket for two minuscule towels and a pile of clothes to an ajumma behind a desk of trial-sized toiletries. I scour the lockers for number 825, which corresponds with my wristband. Found, I strip all my clothing off and put them inside. I feel exposed with nothing but my wristband for protection. -continued on p26-

Clutching my mustard-colored hankie to my chest like a child with its comfort blanket, I enter the vast sauna area, mokyongtang, stark naked. I expect the eyes of several hundred Korean women to swivel and stare, but no one seems to mind the lone waygook. I take stock of the facilities: bubbling 43C hot pools in the centre, an ice plunge pool along the back wall, three scorching 70C saunas in the left corner, ondol stone slabs for sleeping on my left, and five rows of bathing stations to my right. I head for the hot pools and find a chaise lounge-like seat with back jets. I stare intently at the TV projecting news in Hangul to keep me from accidentally starring where I shouldn’t. A curious toddler clambers into the water and stares intently at me instead. A blue straw dangles from his mouth. He notices me noticing him and says ‘Snorkel,’ before dipping his head under. His innocent presence makes me laugh. I begin to relax, so decide to explore.

I head to the ‘Salt Room’ sauna where inside I find a hollowed out tree stump brimming with salt. I start to rub the white granules on my legs when a friendly ajumma gestures that she can scrub my back. Hesitatingly, I let her. I learn later this is common, but feeling mildly traumatized by the experience, I quickly leave for the safety of the ‘Germanium Dry’ sauna next door. After reaching boiling point, I plunge into the cold pool, which is surprisingly refreshing. As I linger there for awhile, I notice two older ladies grabbing their belly fat and comparing their bulges unselfconsciously.

Suitably prune-fingered, I leave to explore jimjilbang. I adorn my faded red shorts and t-shirt set and with bare feet trundle up to the 3rd floor. The lively co-ed space is being enjoyed by couples, families and girlfriends. A survey of the floor reveals a plethora of entertainment options from a food court, coffee shop, mini noraebangs, arcade games, a children’s play area, a large chill-out zone covered in mats, dark coves for sleeping, and to my delight two dozen Bodyfriend chairs, where an indulging 15-minute roller pressure massage costs a mere 2,000W. I also discover several clothed saunas - one with a heat of 87C - and a cooling ‘Ice Room’. I decide my favorite space is the ‘Salt Room’, whic h on this floor has moodenhancing Himalayan rose-colored salt for walls. As I lay on the heated rocks trying to mediate, I chastise myself for not gaining the courage to visit sooner.

Well hello again library lovers! Because we know you are the page-turning type, there’s more in store for you this month. As a follow-up to our library feature in April, here is a highlight of more libraries in Daegu. The differencethese libraries are English Language-centric. And while your goal may (or may not) be to learn Korean, it is always comforting when you can actually understand what it written on the page. Take a look, you may find your great next read at one of these:

Hidden in plain sight, the Daegu Jung-gu English Library, opened in February of 2013 with the intent to provide children, teenagers, and residents an opportunity to familiarize themselves with English language in comfortable spaces. Comfortable indeed, the library has an open floor plan featuring a Children’s Story Telling Zone, Reading Zone, Listening Zone, Classrooms, and a fullycovered balcony. The main reading area has a beautiful spherical design infused with color, graphics, and plenty of natural light. Almost immediately after entering the Library, I was greeted by Ms. Yoon, Ji-hyun, a very friendly member of the English Library Team. She enthusiastically informed me about the upcoming World Book Day Event and assured it would be an event I wouldn’t want to
miss. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, however, the library hosts a lot of events and activities throughout the year. Though the primary target audience for this library are children and teens; there were a number of books that can be enjoyed by any age. I’d imagine this is the perfect resource for grade-school teachers, ESL Instructors, and parents alike. The library include has a variety of newspapers, magazines, and books covering subjects such as history, languages (of the World), social sciences, religion, and general works. There are also comics and graphic novels, dictionaries and reference material, and popular series such as Harry Potter. -continued on p30-

• Written and photographed by Alex A-Che Translated by Yujeong Lee
Children’s Day 어린이날
May 5th is Children’s Day, or Eorini Nal (어린이날 ), is a South Korean national holiday, or Red Day as many of us know it by. The Korean children’s writer, Pang Chonghwan, founded the holiday in 1923 as Boy’s Day. Later in 1975, it was designated as a national holiday and named Children’s Day. Children’s Day celebrates the dignity of children and their need and rights to love, care and respect. Many local governments have parades and public activities. Places like museums, zoos, amusement parks, and movie theaters offer free admission to children. Traditional games, such as yut are played. Gifts are given to children from their parents and you will many of them dressed in the traditional hanbok.

Parent’s Day 어버이날
May 8th is all about celebrating parents, both by the public and the government. Thought not considered a national holiday, or red day, it is still considered an important holiday. Schools, senior centers, local governments and businesses cater to the celebration of parents and filial piety. The origins of Parent's Day, or EoBeoi Nal (어버이 날), can be traced back to the 1930s. Starting in 1930, some Christian communities began to celebrate Mother's Day. It eventually became a recognized holiday in 1973. When Parents' Day was first established, the entire week with the 8th day was designated to be a week to respect the elderly, but respecting elders in the month of May was abolished in 1997 with October becoming the month designated for respecting the elderly. -continued on p34-

carnations specifically because as she put it, “Its whiteness is to symbolize the truth, purity and broad-charity of mother love; its fragrance, her memory, and her prayers. The carnation does not drop its petals, but hugs them to its heart as it dies, and so, too, mothers hug their children to their hearts, their mother love never dying.” These days, adult children are modernizing their gifting and giving gifts such as beauty products, including plastic surgery or botox treatments to keep their aging parents feeling young again.
May 15th is Teacher’s Day in Korea, as is also known as SeuSeungWeh Nal (스승의 날). Teacher’s Day has been celebrated since 1963. The day began when a group of Red Cross youth members visited their former teachers who were either hospitalized or had retired and since then Teacher’s Day has become a chance for students to once again remember their teachers. Under Confucianism there is a saying which goes ‘Do not even step on the shadows of your teachers.’ This saying speaks of how much respect Koreans showed to their teachers in the past.
Traditionally, children give parents carnations. Red carnations are a symbol of love, purity, and admiration. Its history goes back to its American beginnings. The founder of Mother’s Day herself, Anna Jarvis, chose white

Just like Parent’s Day, carnations are a traditional gift given to teachers as a sign of appreciation. Students also give them “love cards” as a way to tell teachers about their appreciation. These are usually studentmade. Celebrations are thrown by some universities and schools, awarding the best educators for their hard work.

Day Tours From Daegu
It is absolutely possible to travel to faraway parts of Korea without having to worry about how to get there and back and what to do in between. For those feeling adventurous, you should check out the one-day tours that take you out of Daegu and bring you back the same night. It helps to have a Korean friend help you out unless your Korean is good enough to traverse through the maze of information these tour-booking sites have. You can easily find the sites, just search 대구 여행사 and you will see a plethora of websites that have their tour plans and prices right on the main page. We personally went with 진짜 재미있는 여 행 (Really Fun Trips) at http://tour053.com, and found their services to be great. Their tour guide was a local university student. He tried translating some things for me and was really fun to travel with.

My friend Eunyoung and I wanted to catch the early spring season so we headed 3 hours south to Jeollado in late March. The bus picked us up at 6 o’clock in the morning in front of Hyundai Department store. They also picked people up from Beomeo and from Yongsan Station on the west side. We had a tight schedule, a long day but worth every single minute.
Baegun-dong Garden
The first stop was the Baeun-dong Garden, a vacation home built by a scholar during the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. Various scholars and poets wrote poetry and other writings there, a hidden gem that provided natural harmony and seclusion.
Gangjin Green Tea Fields & Lunch
A short walk from the garden, the woods open up to a valley of green tea fields that have the most picturesque mountain in the background. They had free makgolli and tofu for visitors, which was a nice pre-lunch snack before getting into the bus again. We headed into town for a traditional bulgogi lunch that was quite delicious.

Gau Island
After lunch, we headed to the small island of Gau. Parking the bus on the mainland side, we crossed on foot through this neat little bridge that gave us a picturesque view of the small island. Eunyoung and I hiked to the top to see the spectacular vase-shaped zip-lining tower. Ceramics are famous in the region, hence the beautiful larger-than-life jade-colored vase that you can walk into and then zip-line for a minute all the way back to the mainland. The cost to zipline was 25,000won and seems worth it for the long ride and extraordinary view you get on the way back to the mainland.

Nammireuk Temple
Our trip finally concluded with a visit to NammireukSa, a Buddhist temple that had various Buddha, elephant and monk statues. It was quite unique and different than most of the temples I’ve seen in Korea. The area was vast and included a lake with a variety of Buddhist architecture surrounding the area. We arrived home at 8:30, a long fun-filled day that wasn’t even exhausting simply because the early start let us sleep to Jeollado and back to Daegu. These one-day tours are well worth it. The city of Gangjin offered a 50% discount on the tour, simply to promote itself and get more visitors. The trip was a mere 23,000 won. I highly recommend it as a way to get out of town and immerse yourself in a fully Korean tour with local Daegu people and with places you may never find on your own. http://www.daegucompass.com

Osaka And Kobe Perfect Destinations for the Chuseok Holiday
• Written and Photographed by Lindsay Mickles [http://theneverendingwanderlust.com] Translated by Yujeong Lee
Thinking of going abroad for Chuseok this year? Start planning and booking NOW, well, about 3 months ago would have been ideal…. Anyways, for my final trip abroad, before moving back to the USA, I planned to visit Osaka and Kobe, with a few friends of mine, over the the 5-day Chuseok holiday. My friend Arlene and I set off on a Wednesday morning and headed to Busan to catch our flight to Osaka via Eastar Jet. There was no traffic, the airport wasn’t super busy (unlike my experience last year in Seoul), and we arrived safe and sound at Osaka Kansai.

After getting into Osaka proper, we made our way to the Air BnB, which was near the Shin-Imamiya Station. Our BnB was exactly what we expected (minus a bit of smell from the tatami walls and lack of logical air flow). We got ourselves settled and headed out to grab a late lunch. As we walked around, we got a good feel for the area and were able to pick up a few supplies from the grocery store. Most importantly, we found food. We located a decent ramen place, which is damned good compared with what I’ve found outside of Japan, and chose the ‘mixed’ flavor (not too lean/not overly fatty). It was pretty rich and tasty for the price!
A FULL DAY IN KOBE
The next day, we all got our butts moving around 9am and headed straight to Kobe. We walked around and found the Ikuta Shrine and did a bit of shopping until we were ready for our Kobe beef meal at Tor Road Steak Aoyama. At the restaurant, we chose the 5000 yen option (appx $50) and it was absolutely worth it. We had a salad, soup, Kobe beef (sirloin and tenderloin), grilled veggies, and bread. We also had tea afterward. The shop owners spoke a bit of English and were super friendly. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is heading to Kobe for the beef! -continued on p42-

After our fantastic meal, we hopped on the city tour bus (well worth it) and went up to the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway. We took the cable car to the top and had a nice stroll down the mountainside. Although there were not many flowers in-bloom, it was still a beautiful place to spend a few hours.

Osaka And Kobe
We arrived back into the city around 5:30 and headed to Chinatown. They were having a Moon Festival, and we were able to taste some awesome street food (dumplings, more Kobe beef, and noodles). Check out my website to see a video of my friend purchasing some of the amazing steamed/fried dumplings. After gorging ourselves on street food, it was getting late… We headed back to Osaka to rest-up for the next day.

SHOPPING AND EATING IN OSAKA
On Friday, my friends Nancy and Joseph went to Universal Studios and Arlene and I had the day to ourselves. We went out for some gorgeous pancakes at 幸せのパンケー キ 本町店. I ordered the regular pancakes with manuka honey butter and caramel maple syrup. The pancakes were phenomenal – not as sweet as I thought (which was a good thing) and worth every penny. After breakfast, we headed out to the Instant Ramen Museum – check out my blog for details about this awesome museum!
We stayed at the Ramen Museum for a few hours and headed to Umeda afterward. We found some yummy sushi at one of the stalls in the food hall and had a fabulous meal for about $12USD. I was able to find a few gifts at Loft before we headed back towards the BnB to rest. We didn’t rest too long (that was dangerous) and hurried out to meet the other two for kushikatsu at a local restaurant. Kushikatsu is fried everything = yummy goodness. Everything was fried to perfection and the dipping sauce was quite good as well. It was money well spent and we walked away (ok…waddled) very happy customers. -continued on p44-

MORE SHOPPING AND SUSHI IN OSAKA
The following day we all did our own things. While Arlene and Joe checked out a festival, I went back to shop at Umeda and Tokyo Station. We all met up around 2:30 and had sushi at Harukoma Sushi (春駒 支店), recommended by Migrationology. It was good-damned good, but I actually liked the fatty tuna at Umeda station food stall better! After eating, we were all kinda pooped, so Joe and I went back towards the BnB to go shopping at Don Quixote and call it a night. 우리 모두는 2시 30분 쯤에 만나서 Migrationology(역주 : 유 투브의 리뷰 채널)이 추천한 하루코아 스시에서 초밥을 먹었다.
BACK TO REALITY
The next day was fly home day! Arlene and I got to Osaka Kansai with plenty of time to check in, eat a Filet o’ Fish at McDonald’s (never know what you’ll miss until you can’t find it) and do a mad dash through duty free shopping to stock up on Royce chocolates. It was an excellent vacation – my first time traveling in a group that size in 5 years and it went splendidly! I highly recommend visiting (aka eating your way through) Osaka and Kobe, over a long weekend (even longer if you have the chance)!

One of the best places for a date, birthday, or special meal, La Luce delivers high quality mediterranean meals for the midrange foodie. Their menu includes a wide variety of Western dishes, my personal favorites being the flatbread and mousakka. The ambiance is slightly upscale, the menu is diverse, and their set meals are to die for. La Luce is my go-to place for my birthday celebrations and it has never disappointed. Hours: 12:00-22:00 / Break 15:30-17:30 / Closed Sundays & Holidays Tel: 053-606-0733 Address: 대구시 중구 동덕로 141 2F
Brewer Bros
The best fish and chips in Daegu can be found at Brewer Bros, and the portion sizes are massive. You can get a medium size portion for 12,000 or a large for 15,000. If you’re not in the mood for fish, there are a few other tasty options to choose from, including sausages and chips or fried shrimp and chips - both are solid dishes as well. Brewer Bros also offers a good selection of craft beers on tap, at a very reasonable price. Hours: Sun-Thurs 17:00-01:00 / Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 Tel: 010-3268-4269 Address: 대구 중구 종로 29
EtOH’s Drafthouse EtOH’s is your one-stop-shop for American-style pizza and a wide selection of craft beer. The owner works very hard to deliver great food and welcoming atmosphere - and he’s succeeded in making EtOH’s one of the most popular places to grab a bite and a pint on the weekends. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu 16:00-01:00 / Fri 16:00-02:00 / Sat 15:00-02:00 / Sun 15:00-01:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-211-9385 Address: 대구시 중구 동성로3길 12-3 2F
I'm Paul
Hands-down my favorite dessert cafe in Daegu. The owner of this lovely cafe fell in love with New York style desserts while studying at Parson’s School of Design. The coffee, aide, and tea on offer perfectly complement the gorgeous desserts she makes. You can even order entire cakes for special occasions. There’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend, though I personally lean towards the Profiterole cake and anything she makes with chocolate!
Schoron
My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. The place is small, so you might have to wait, but it is my favorite place to go for brunch downtown.

Beomeo G’Day Cafe
I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! The dish includes a sunnyside-up egg, two lovely pieces of toast, a small salad, and mushrooms in a cheese-cream sauce - to die for! I love to head to G’Day on a Saturday or Sunday, with my laptop in-tow. I can enjoy a great brunch, wonderful coffee (and tea), and get some writing done in a great, relaxed atmosphere.
Sinmae Taj Mahal
One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. To find the restaurant, take exit 5 from Sinmae station and go straight until you see Dunkin Donuts (it’s on the 2nd floor of that building). The restaurant is foreigner-friendly and they will cater the spice level to your needs. The dishes are well-priced and there are plenty of vegetarian and halal options as well.
Nam-gu HamiMami
The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. They serve western-style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort foods. HamiMami’s homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, and sausages are among the best in the city and their bread is delivered fresh daily. Head to HamiMami’s when you’re feeling a little homesick and let them spoil you! Hours: 08:00-21:00 / Weekday break 15:00-17:00 / Closed Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Address: 대구시 남구 삼정길 87
Sangin and Jincheon
This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! Oh - I’ve never seen anyone pay by card, so it’d be best to take cash with you.
Suseong Lake La Salud
I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. I usually go for the house burger, but you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu! Definitely go for the set, which includes a drink and side. The restaurant is easy to find and the staff is super-friendly!

Bongsan Cultural Street
77, Bongsanmunhwa-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea
Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

Dalgubeol-daero 450-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea
The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73
Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.
Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.
AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
