Editor’s Notes Hi Daegu, Getting ready for the festive holiday season? We hope you remember to party responsibly. November has finally come. This year, like many years, seems to have gone by at warp speed. We hope you have had a fabulous fall and are preparing for a wonderful winter. This month we take a look at some amazing fall hikes you can enjoy while the leaves are changing colors and the weather is still pleasant. Check out an amazing sunset with your friends, family or loved ones. You can read about four fantastic hikes around Daegu on p16. Also, fancy a short trip to the ocean to enjoy fresh crab during the season? Read all about getting to and enjoying the cool breeze of the Pacific on p24. Another November has come and another Movember is taking place. Read up on how to get involved in supporting men’s health in Daegu on p52. We’d like to also address a photo credit that we missed in the last issue. Last month, the Daegu Coffee and Cafe Fair photos were taken by Juha Hiltunen. It was a bit of a crazy issue last month, as our Creative Director’s grandfather passed away and he had to fly home to be with his family. This happened exactly when we design, edit, proofread and publish the magazine. We are sorry for this mistake and hope that you can forgive us. At the Compass, we value how each and every contributor’s effort and know that without you, the Compass could not be made. Every month, we try to ensure that the best quality product is delivered to the Daegu community because we care about you all. We are always on the look out for new writers, photographers and translators. If you want to know how to be part of our exciting and caring team, email volunteers@daegucompass.com Thanks again for supporting the Compass Daegu! Pansteak House Great Steaks Cooked Right At Your Table Written by Kate Babiarz / Photographed by Ivan Broida
“Our Steaks are Better than Sex!” After hearing a lot of hype about this place from various Facebook blogs, I finally got to check it out myself. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait! 2046 Pansteak is located in the downtown area on “Waygook Way” or “Foreigner Street” just across from Thursday Party I; which is the street behind the fire station (삼덕소방 서) and the Catholic church (삼덕성당). They started out two years ago as a small basement restaurant in Seoul. Now, there are seven different locations open in Seoul. In August, it became the first onein Daegu, because the ownerMa, San Rak (마산락) wanted to bring their high quality beef, fresh ingredients, and their delectable French-style cooking for Daegu to enjoy, as well.

DAEGU COMPASS 2014.NOVEMBER
So you might be asking yourself what “2046 Pansteak” means, right? Well, their beef is aged for 20 years, and they have 46 different types of ingredients in the restaurant. And as for the ‘pansteak’ part; well, it’s named for the style of cooking they do. 2046 Pansteak is the originator of this, so don’t be fooled by their copy cats. First, they put all of the ingredients in a cast iron pan. Then, the pan is heated up on the stove. And then, the extremely friendly waiters bring the piping hot pan over to finish the cooking process right at your table! The sizzling meat and the aromatic steam coming off made my stomach dance with excitement! Each 2046 Pansteak steak entree comes with Frenchstyle big leafy spinach (butter and nutmeg), long-stem mushrooms (balsamic vinaigrette, garlic, sun-dried

tomatoes, and peanuts), a small side of rice, and two sauces (spicy pepper and sweet and spicy soy sauce). Take note that any of these items can be left out if somebody is allergic or just doesn’t like them. They are willingto customize the food to your dietary needs, within reason that is. So, here’s the scoop on the steaks. The Pan Steak Prime (14,000 won – 170g)is a thick, juicy chuck tail flap cut that is marbleized and very tender. The Pan Filet Mignon Steak (18,000 won – 170g) is the tenderest part of beef that left me wanting more! Next was the Pan Steak Special (16,000 won – 160g), which is a long juicy sirloin strip. I have to say that these are by far the best quality steaks for the lowest price I’ve seen yet! 2046 Pansteak also serves other dishes, such as salads and pastas. The Bacon Caesar Salad (9,500 won) and the Shrimp and Garlic Salad (10,500 won) are the two salads we got to enjoy. Both were loaded with ingredients that were perfectly prepared. As for the Gorgonzola Cream Meat Pasta (14,000 won), -continued on p10-

it pleasantly surprised me! The bit-size rib meat and the creamy cheese sauce made for a good accompaniment to the steaks and salads. For an added bonus, you get one miniature iron pan dessert – with two bite-sized brownies in it – delivered to your table for every two people. 2046 Pansteak uses Belgium chocolate, almonds, and powdered sugar to bake these little bite-size morsels every day. With other menu items like Crispy Baked Mac and Cheese (13,000 won), Serendipity Tomato Pasta (13,500 won), Peruvian Salmon Ceviche (12,000 won), and G.L.O. Salad (11,500 won - which they claim will make every women go crazy!); you’ve gotta stop by multiple times and give them all a try! 2046 Pansteak is now my go-to steak restaurant in downtown! 2046 Pansteak is open every day at 11:30 am. On the week days, they close at 11:00 pm, and on the weekends, they close at 12:00 am. Highchairs are available, so feel free to bring the little ones, too!

Aficio A New Dining Experience In Daegu Written by Kate Babiarz / Photographed by Ivan Broida
"A Warm Heart and a Wonderful Italian Meal." This restaurant review is a bit out of the ordinary. It’s not just about the Aficio restaurant and the Drop Top coffee shop, it’s also about the One Welfare Center. Kim, Hak Ran (김학란) is not only a sponsor in the KAFC (Korean American Friendship Circle - which is a fantastic programbetween the Korean university students and the US Army friends and family membersthat fosters a relationship and better understanding of the military presence here in Korea), but she has also opened up and funded the One Welfare Center seven years ago in hopes of helping the seemingly neglected needy people here in Korea. She employs the handicapped, the orphaned, 12

the single-parent families, the elderly, the juvenile delinquents, and also foreign women who have married Korean men (mostly from other Asian countries). The One Welfare Center has been through many different stages of development over the years. It’s gone from a buddy program of people who helped bathe the needy, to a place where lunch boxes were made by the needy to earn money, and to finally what it is now. Starting next month, Aficio will be hosting monthly events for the orphans to come and enjoy free Italian fine-dining and a live concert. Hak Ran’s purpose is to give the orphans an opportunity to see and experience something that they’ve never seen before. And also, they can gain firsthand knowledge of different career Daegu Foodie - Aficio

opportunities, such as an Italian chef or a barista at a coffee shop. Hak Ran wants to help motivate and encourage others to improve their lives, and this is just one way she feels she can make this happen. Those that are interested in volunteering at the orphanage should contact Kate@DaeguCompass. com for more information.
Aficio is a casual, yet sophisticated Italian restaurant located at the base of Ap Mountain (앞산) and the ApsanRingway, on the what is commonly known as the ApsanCafé Street. Its second floor large glass windows overlook the city down below, and it offers a variety of delicious meals. The beautiful brick walls with large arched windows that have rustic landscapes paintedin them make you feel like you are on a vacation to Italy. The third floor rooftop is available for BBQ parties and has a beautifully painted room with a large glass dome. It’s perfect for private parties, and the stunning view of the Daegu Tower only adds to the beauty. The name Aficio, pronounced ‘Ah-fi-she-oh’, comes from the name of the first Italian chef. You can’t help but feel happier and livelier when looking at themany black-and-white Aficiologos that are displayed everywhere, which is exactly what Hak Ran wants you to feel when you leave. After tasting the food, I most definitely did feel happier. My friends and I enjoyed five dishes that are made from organic and high quality ingredients: the Risotto Camberi Crab Rose, the Manzo Funghi Spaghetti, the Margherita Pizza, and the Cajun Chicken Salad; plus the FREE Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza. First, the Risotto Camberi Crab Rose (14,900 won) is a creamy oven-baked rice dish with large shreds of crab, small and medium-sized shrimp. It’s a little bit on the spicy side, but not anything that will make you sweat or have a runny nose. The Manzo Funghi Spaghetti (19,000 won) reminds me a bit of beef stroganoff because of the -continued on p14-

creamy beef and mushroom sauce. Large juicy mushrooms and thick slices of beef cooked with cream and black pepper making this my favorite meal of the night. The Cajun Chicken Salad (11,000 won) comes served in a large bowl with various types of lettuce, baby tomatoes, walnuts, raisins, and long breaded strips of chicken. Both the sweet and sour mustard and the balsamic vinaigrette dressings are good toppings to this salad. And to finish off our meal, we had the Margherita Pizza (14,900 won) and the Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza(10,900 won,if not part of the special). The pizza dough at Afficio is left for 72 hours to rise, which makes this a thin, yet very soft crust pizza. Both of these pizzas had thick layers of cheese and were enough to feed two people on their own. The Margherita Pizza had just right blending of oregano and tomato sauce. The Gorgonzola Cheese Pizzacomes with thinly-sliced almonds and a side of honey to balance out the strong cheese flavor. Aficio currently has two great specials going on that you just can’t pass up on! If two people go and enjoy two

main dishes, then they’ll get a FREE Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza! And, if three people go and order three main dishes, the same deal applies! Now for another treat; every customer who orders a main dish gets a free Americano (worth 3,800 won) from Drop Top downstairs. These deals won’t last forever, so hurry on over and get them while they’re still available. Also, look out for free monthly concerts at Drop Top on the first floor. Now that your taste buds are salivating and your heart is warmed, take the subway to Hyeongchungno Station (현충로역) and go out exit 2. Make a left at the next main intersection and head up the street towards Ap Mountain (앞산). Aficio and Drop Top will be on the right-hand sidejust before you get to the base of the mountain and the ApsanRingway; it’s the building with the cute statue of three little pigsin the front of the building. A few bit more bits of info. It’s open every day, except Monday, from 11:30 am to 11:00 pm. Last order is at 10:00 pm. For those of you with cars, there’s a free parking lot available, too!

Four Sunset Hikes of Daegu Enjoy Fresh Mountain Air Without Leaving The City Written and photographed by Sean Dixon-Sullivan / Translated by Kate Ko
Here in Daegu happiness is always near for nature-lovers and avid hikers. A rocky perch overlooking the city is never more than a metro ride and a short hike away. For those who prefer the company of clouds over crowds, Daegu’s many surrounding mountains are potential rewards; everyday is a potential holiday. Especially now with the scorching haze of summer behind us, the skies are clearer, afternoons cooler and sunsets brighter. So here are a few hikes for honoring Mother Earth’s hued masterpieces.

Narrowed down from several wide ranges, here’s one mountain for each of the city’s four corners, listed clockwise. The criteria are twofold: being within close proximity to Daegu proper and having unobstructed westerly views. So bring some snacks, some makgeolli and a friend to carry more makgeolli, and prepare yourself for a new perspective on Colorful Daegu. Oh, and don’t forget a flashlight for the way down.

1) Cholyae Mountain (초례산) 637m Commuters may recognize it from the unflattering photo on the subway maps, but hikers know it as the final peak of the “Ga-Pal-Hwan-Cho” trail—40km of scenic and sacred ridgeline that connects four peaks including Palgongsan. Cholyae’s rocky caps overlook northeastern Daegu, giving it the perfect angle for viewing sunsets across the city. Bring some poles to protect against muscle aches and wild boar maulings. From Ansim Station exit #1, turn right and head north 20 minutes to the trailheads, 1.5 hours to the peak.
18
DAEGU COMPASS 2014.NOVEMBER
2) Yongji Peak (용지봉) 634m Fitting a common theme among Daegu mountains, our next spot is named for its alleged dragon (yong or lyong) features. A panoramic scene is visible from the tip of the dragon’s horn, while the dragon’s spine divides your view between the city to the north and farmlands to the south. After relaxing in the mountaintop gazebo, head down to either Gachang and its famed dumplings or Suseong Lake and its carnival rides, depending on your chosen route. Trailheads are along the southern edge of Suseoung Lake and the eastern side of Gachang Town. It’s 1.5 hours to the peak.
Daegu Attractions - Four Sunset Hikes of Daegu

3) Cheonglyong Mountain (청룡산) 794m “Blue Dragon Mountain” towers above southwestern Daegu. It may be the most strenuous hike listed, but may also be the most rewarding. Its ridgelines offer views of western Daegu, the Nakdong River and sea of mountains beyond, including Gayasan 50km away. Be sure to take the high trails and find yourself atop some dizzying cliffs. From Sangin Station, walking south out of exit #4, it’s 25 minutes to trailhead, 2 hours to the peak.
4) Walyong Mountain (와룡산) 299m Our final sunset hike is also named for its resemblance to a dragon. The lowest of our four hikes, this dragon appears to be lying down. It’s not guarding any treasure though; that’s a landfill in its northern valley. Nonetheless, Walyong’s south-facing peaks offer clear views of the western end of Daegu and the Guemho River. From Igok Station, walking north out of exit #6, it’s 15 minutes to the trailhead, 45 minutes to the peaks. See the map tab of naver.com for more detailed directions and trail routes.

The Arc A Place To Refresh and Relax
Written and Photographed by Thomas Mathews / Translated by Sori Lee
We live in a world with a lot of stress. And for Koreans, it is no different. If it is from Korean students studying from 8am to 10pm including holidays or company employees working 14-16 hours a day every day, Koreans are very stressed and always in a hurry. So we all need a place in where we can relieve that stress, and refresh our minds, even if it is just for a short time.
In Daegu, there is no ocean or beach to go to relax, but there is a place in where we can refresh our minds, relax ourselves and relieve our stress (plus get some exercise, too). It is called The ARC (디아크). The ARC, which is means, Architecture of River Culture or Artistry of River Culture, is located along the banks of Geumho River.

earth and beyond. It is a water theme structure with the exterior itself as a famous work of art. But the interior is also an amazing work of art. It is a simple design, but the building has many exhibitions and galleries related to the water theme in their basement, and on the first floor and second floors. These exhibits and galleries give information about the local rivers as well as there are “photo zones” and numerous poetries. There is also a circle theater to watch the history of water in the Daegu area. There are different activities for kids to do. Then on the third floor is an observatory deck to oversee the surrounding natural landscape as well as Geumho River. You can also see a damn and see where Geumho River meets Nakdong River. Plus if you are thirsty and want a nice drink, Caffe Pascucci, is located on the third floor. And the best part, the admission and parking is free and there is enough parking facilities.

The amazing natural landscape that surrounds The ARC is also something to enjoy. This is where you can really relieve your stress, refresh your mind, and just relax your body. There is plenty of space to ride a bicycle, go for a walk, in line skate, skateboard or do whatever activity you may wish. Kids can play in the water fountains that surround the free space. There are also tours available. I preferred to ride a bicycle and for 4000won per hour I was able to rent a bicycle from a bicycle rental shop that is across from The ARC.
Behind The ARC, you can ride your bicycle, go for a walk, or jog along the banks of the Geumho River. It is very quiet with no traffic, or businesses. It becomes just you and the sounds of nature.
If you want to get away from traffic jams, the fast life, and stress (from work, school and everything else), and you want to enjoy the quietness (no hurrying), natural landscape, a free water theme museum, some nice coffee, and a bike ride or jog along the banks of Geumho River, then The ARC might be the best medicine for you.

A weekend excursion out of Daegu seems destined to end in one of two ways: Monday morning, a refreshed and jubilant expat throws back the covers, leaps out of bed, and attacks the new week with renewed vigor and encouragement from their time away. Alternatively, smash cut to Tuesday evening and the intrepid explorer hasn’t left bed yet, curtains closed, and an ice-pack still covering bleary eyes, with mumbled curses against soju and enabling friends the only noise that doesn’t bring a recently retired migraine screaming back. If the former sounds even slightly more appealing, a weekend in Pohang may be able to get your week started off right.

Coastal cities can offer unique attractions that inlanders crave, chiefly fresh seafood and elusive beaches, and Pohang is no exception. Its dominant attraction is the Jukdo Market, and not without reason. The sprawling expanse of shops and vendors can easily contend with Daegu’s own Seomun Market, and has an entire swathe dedicated to oceanic delicacies. Between the speeding delivery scooters and the ever-aggressive hagglers, the only thing lacking in the market, ironically, is space. The close quarters ensure visitors brush every shoulder, smell every aroma, hear every negotiation, and see exactly how a fish becomes sashimi. Fortunately, it’s difficult to find fresher catch, and hosts of small restaurants use their stalls as veritable menus, all too happy to serve your purchase with the accoutrement of your favorite banchan.

Early Saturday night strolls along the shoreline offer an exciting mix of carnival games, street food, and no fewer than a dozen opportunities to have your eyebrows singed off by a wayward roman candle. Continuing north, and barring any unexpected stop, drop, and rolls, visitors will be treated to sunset views of the illuminated viewing deck that graces almost every tourism guide regarding Pohang. The two-story structure offers the perfect place to greet the evening, with benches for relaxing and socializing, and an ideal view to watch downtown Pohang turn from day into night.

Owner Andy Frank opened Tilt in December 2009, and can be found behind the bar ready to recommend your next favorite beer or top off your current one. Between the traditional domestic beer and spirit selections of a typical Korean bar, Tilt also serves Lost Coast Indica IPA, Lost Coast Hopcat Amber Ale, and Anderson Valley Summer Solstice. As the season turns from summer to fall, so too will the beer turn from Summer Solstice to Winter Solstice, an anticipated change to be sure but certainly not the last one Andy is working on. Beginning in the fall, Tilt will be importing a new selection of craft beers from Railhouse Brewery of St. Aberdeen, North Carolina. The award-winning lineup includes Railhouse’s FCA IPA, Mastiff Oatmeal Stout, and KA-BAR Brown Ale, the last two of which each boast a first place finish in the 2013 North Carolina Brewer’s Cup. Coupled with near daily food and drink specials and an active Facebook page to update all of Tilt’s goings-on, it’s little wonder that every local’s favorite bar is expanding to include non-locals as well.

Pohang can be reached from Daegu via the Dongbu Intercity Bus Terminal, with one-way tickets costing ~7,000 won. Pohang, while lacking a subway system, has an extensive and timely bus network that can shuttle visitors anywhere relatively painlessly. Arriving in Pohang at the Intercity Bus Terminal, exit the East entrance and cross the street to catch northbound busses towards Jukdo Market, Yeongildae Beach, and downtown Pohang. To reach Bogyeongsa Temple, stay on the northbound side of the bus lane and board the 510 bus, which departs hourly. Check with the tourist information to ensure its time of arrival; Bogyeongsa Temple is the final stop on the bus.

Haeinsa Temple Sorigil Road Trekking In Nature
Written by Hapcheon-gun / Photographed by Ivan Broida and Matthew Thornton / Translated by Kate Ko
There are a lot of trekking courses in Korea and many travelers love walking in Korea's beautiful outdoor environments. However, is there a course that people find truly special, Sorigil Road of Haeinsa Temple, have you heard of it before? ‘Sorigil‘ means a sound of life that communicates with all things in the universe and nature. As you are walking through the road with sound of trickling water, singing birds and rustling wind, then you will hear harmony that has existed for hundreds of years. The sound is so powerful, it will leave a lasting impression deep within your heart.

Sorigil Road is course along Hongnyudong Valley, from the theme park of the Tripitaka Koreana to Hakssadae of Haeinsa Temple which is world heritage site. It is a point-to-point course, so you can choose either the theme park or Haeinsa Templa to start. I recommend you to start from the theme park so that you have more time to look around Haeinsa Temple.

If you start from the theme park, you will first see Gaya Mountain far away hovering over the rural landscape village. Colorful flowers around the village enhance the pleasure of trekking with sound of falling water. When you walk along the silent road, you can see clothes on the clothesline over house walls swaying in the wind. You might hear the sound of the legendary wind in which the course is named after.
Even though there is no shade on the way to Sorigil Auto-camping Site, water flows in the valley will make you stay cool. Then you arrive into the wooded trail where you can relax near Sori pond with many lotus flowers welcoming you. From here, the real trekking begins along Haeinsa Temple Sorigil road. You can see Hongnyudong Valley as well from here.
Sorigil has beautiful scenery. Walking along the wooded path and enjoying a view of valley through pine trees, possesses a unique charm, unlike anything you have ever experienced. Your ears will be filled with the natural sounds of the valley.
The sound of water running water can be heard as the road approaches the valley. The sound of water sounds so attractive during the fall season, reminding you of the fresh mountain atmosphere.
You can find Nongsanjeong pavilion as you walk across bridges and wooden decks. It is a historic site where Choe Chiwon lived and it has great views towards Sorigil road. Daegu Goes to Washington Daegu Expands Its Medical Tourism Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos by EXCO
As Daegu solidifies its’ position as a medical tourism destination, the city’s promoters have started looking on a more global scale to get the word out: Daegu is a place to receive exceptional and affordable health care. The first step in this process was attending the 7th World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress in Washington, D.C. Held from September 20-24, the World Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare Congress is a conference organized by the Medical Tourism Association (MTA) and includes exhibitions, business meetings, seminars, forums, and networking opportunities. In all, over 3000 companies from around the globe were present. This year’s event marked the first time Daegu was

represented in an international medical conference of this magnitude. Teams from Daegu Metropolitan City, Keimyung Medical Center, Daegu Fatima Hospital, Sois Belle Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, Taeoreum Medical Clinic, Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee, and EXCO made the long journey to the United States to showcase Daegu’s strengths and to learn more about the industry. The delegation from Daegu was busy throughout the conference participating in several events. Besides being present for the congress itself, Daegu was a part of the ‘Destination Health Forum’, a VIP session for government officials and hospital executive staff in which Daegu gave a presentation on the city’s medical

tourism infrastructure and policies. Daegu was also represented in the ‘Medical Tourism Facilitator Forum,’ a debate in which medical tourism companies and hospital staff discussed the role of online platforms and the importance of facilitators in medical tourism. Additionally, two workshops, an Insurance Workshop and a Marketing Workshop, were also part of the delegation’s schedule. Throughout the convention, Daegu’s representatives ran an ongoing Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Booth at the event’s main venue, the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. The booth featured a promotion banner and the opportunity for visitors to try on Daejanggeum costumes, or Korean traditional outfits. Additionally, workers handed out brochures and provided counseling. Perhaps one of the strongest cases for attending events such as the World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress is the opportunity to network with international peers. The Daegu delegation had the opportunity to tour some of the top-ranked hos-continued on p32-

pitals in the world in the Washington D.C./Baltimore region, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Specialty Hospital of Washington and George Washington University Medical Center. Besides touring hospital facilities in the D.C. and Baltimore region, the delegation met with the American Medical Tourism Institute. All the organizations related with the Korean Pavilion at the convention gathered together and had a meeting with KTO American branch, Medical Tourism Agency (Malaysian Corp.), Korea Health Industry Development Institute and MTA Korea. The MTA is an American non-profit organization that organizes networking projects, educational programs for medical tourism agencies, and the World Medical Tourism Congress. With offices on every continent, MTA’s Korean branch, or “chapter,” is aptly named MTA Korea and was established in August of this year in Daegu. MTA Korea National Chapter promotes excellence and the development of Korean medical tourism through seminars and forums and attracts foreign participants’ interests. They will invite buyers who took part in the
World Medical Tourism Congress to have a familiarization tour to promote Korea medical tourism. In all, Daegu’s participation in the Congress was a success. The delegation was able to promote local hospitals and medical tourism institutes to business leaders from around the world. The delegation agreed that the seminars and forums of the Congress were very helpful; they learned that Daegu needs to approach the American medical tourism market with long-term perspectives and elaborate strategies and must study the latest trends of the international medical tourism industry carefully if the city is to compete on a global scale.

"Falling" Into Weight The Fall-I-Days and Christmas Calorie Royale Written and photographed by Aesook Shin
Chuseok might be over but the fall/winter holiday season in Daegu is just beginning, and you know what that means: eating, and more eating. Friends will gather for celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah and of course New Year's Eve! Food brings people together, but can also cause us all to indulge in sweet and fatty foods during these times. No wonder the period between Chuseok and New Year’s is known to some as “the binge season.” That’s why it is so important for everyone to pay attention to what they eat and how they burn the extra calories during this time of the year. Don't wait to fall into weight just because it's getting cold and holidays are coming one after another. You might think that eating sensibly during the holiday period is impossible with so much focus on being merry, eating food and drinking. But, there is hope! I'm here to share a great plan for enjoying all the holiday festivities without the "extra baggage" that comes along with them. It all comes down to good planning, a dash of motivation (with the Hoo Detox Diet Program), and a pinch of self-control. It may not be easy when you are surrounded by so much delicious food, but you will be rewarded on Jan. 1, 2015 when you look in the mirror and realize you haven’t gained a single pound and even managed to lose some.

Healthy Living - "Falling" Into Weight
http://daegucompass.com
Tips for Fall-I-Day Weight Management: • Watch what you eat: Seasonal Fall and Christmas latte drinks at coffee chains are very festive but very calorific. One sip can lead to a bigger waistline and hips! If you follow a calorie-restricted diet rich in lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, low-sugar dairy and whole grains, a little splurge once in a while probably won’t hurt you. Satisfying your body and giving in once or twice will be good for your overall weight loss. This is what I always preach to myself as well as to patients. This is all assuming we pay attention to portion control, don’t reach for second helpings (or a second bottle), and avoid the most caloric and decadent foods and drinks on the table. • Plan Ahead : If you know you are going to a holiday party in the evening, eat a healthy breakfast and lunch. Hoo Daegu believes in translating your daily diet into holiday healthy potluck dishes. Bring something healthy, so at least you can count on one healthy option. You might not win friends with salad, but you'll win the Battle of the Holiday Bulge. Seasonal fruits like tangerines, squash for fall or pomegranate, strawberries - are terrific holiday dishes because they are pretty, festive and best of all, easy and versatile for all sorts of recipes. • If it’s in your house, it’s in your mouth. Give your willpower and your waistline a break and refuse to keep holiday leftovers in your home. Share your Christmas cookies and chocolates. The stress of the holidays will make it even harder to fight cravings with willpower. Send the desserts home with someone else and end the battle before it even begins. Food shared is love shared!

Planning Pregnancy for Elderly Couple with Infertility Helping You Conceive
Article and photo by Hyosung Hospital / Translated by Yujeong Lee
According to a recent research, the average marital age became over 30 years old. The older the average marital age, the more infertility couple happens. Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service said that female sterile patients who got treatment increased from 139,000 in 2008 to 153,000 last year. Also sterile male patients increase from 42,000 to 27,000 during same period. The analysis of medical expenses between 2005 and 2011 says that 0-year-old baby teratosis patient increased 136.5% and the major reason is that mother’s age is older than before. Like this, old age pregnancy affects to increased cases of infertility and deformed babies. The age of first labor has delayed. Elderly mothers have increased more than two times than six years ago. Divorce and remarriage affect mothers over 35 years old. There is a case where a mother gave birth in her twenties and then ten years later as well. Old pregnancy means medically that a mother has a bay after 35 years old. It has become a natural social phenomenon and increases more and more every year. The major reason
38
is that the age of marriage and labor has changed because women enter the workforce and delay marriage. When a woman becomes older, her physical capability begins to decrease. And there are higher possibility for adult disease, infertility, miscarriage and premature birth. Over 35 years old, mother’s body and ovum cell starts aging and chromosomal anomaly could occur, which would increase the likelihood of baby deformities. In 1978, pregnancy and delivery through a IVF (in vitro fertilization) succeeded for the first time in the world, and since then, medical advances including assisted reproductive technology gives hope to infertile couples. Sterility is the condition that you cannot conceive, however, it’s just difficult to have a baby for most of patients who visit our clinic. Then what are some of the causes of it? In spite of having a normal sex life, the test is required in these cases: a wife not able to have a baby after a year of trying, a woman over 35 years old, or one having a medical history with pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, ovary
surgery, habitual abortion, or menstrual irregularity. Also, there’s the matter of a husband having a problem with sperm. In the past, people thought that a woman is blamed for sterility but actually, it’s now known that men and women alike each hold about a 40% ratio to the cause. On this account, her opinion is that they both need to try to overcome it. For women, most cases are ovulatory disorder such as menstrual irregularity and oligomenorrhea, and functional disorder like tubal blockage. For men, they are varicocele and have spermiduct blockage or a problem with sperm Usually 20~30% of infertile couples who get treatment still cannot get pregnant, which means the rest of the couples do. Sterility is not an incurable disease so it’s possible to overcome. Before getting infertility treatment, you have to get tests and know your condition in detail. Ultrasound is a basic test for women. And they will get hormone examination, hysterosalpingogram, and an endometrial biopsy to evaluate ovarian functions. Then the next step is getting treatment and procedure along with their next men-

stural cycle. It could take more than one or two months to finish all kinds of tests because they’re not done at once but proceeded along with one’s menstural cycle. Men will have a semen check after 2 or 3-days of abstinence. If you are over 35 years old, get a health check-up with your husband. And if a mother has a metabolism problem, her baby is more likely to have congenital cardiac anomaly and nervous system malformation. So it requires to have folic acid three months before and after. Once your pregnancy starts, you have work closely with your doctor. Besides basic blood tests and ultrasounds, two integrated blood tests, congenital anomaly tests, are conducted, one between 10 and 12 weeks, and the other between 16 and 18 weeks, which show 90 - 94% accuracy. Diagnosed as high-risk group patient, the mother should get her amniotic fluid tested to check genetic disorders. Chorionic villus sampling between 10 and 12 weeks could be another option, but due to its riskiness, it is not con-
ducted as a basic test. NIPT is the test for Verifi Prenatal Test, which is non-invasive prenatal testing using a mother’s blood to check Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and sex chromosome aneuploidy after 10th month of pregnancy. With the test, 80% of embryonic chromosomal anomaly of whole cases could be found out. If a high-risk mother wouldn’t like to get amniotic fluid test, she can get the test first. However, if the result is positive amniotic fluid test is required. Between 20 and 24 weeks, a baby's physical appearance and organ structure can be tested and observed through 3D ultrasound. Gestational diabetes screening should be conducted between 24 and 28 weeks and a mother should pay closer attention if she has a family member with diabetes. Older mothers have twice as many premature birth risk factors as younger ones; therefore it is recommended to be prepared for the risks in case of premature contractions through cervical length scans and fetal movement scan.
Lately, Ob-Gyn has changed into a new place. It’s not only for medical treatment but also for lecture, exercise and education. Yangnyeongsi Herb Medicine Culture Festival One of Daegu's Oldest Traditions Written, photographed and translated by Kate Ko
On October 4th, Yangnyeongsi, Daegu, was filled with fragrant smell of medicinal herbs and the sound of laughter. Yangnyeongsi presented the 37th Annual Herb Medicine Culture Festival. Here was originally where herb medicine traders and citizens traded products and enjoyed the market day from the beginning of the 1650s. The day was a memorable reminder of how some traditions should always be celebrated and remembered.

The festival provided diagnosis of constitutional type, herb medicine foot bath, booths where people could make soap and perfume pockets. Also, it had quality materials of herb medicine for reasonable prices and I could try ginseng fries and various medical herbal teas. It was interesting that there were many kinds of cosmetic products and pills made with herbal medicine.

We enjoyed Daegu Walking Tour near the festival sight. We visited Cheongna Hill, where you could experience how missionary life happened in the 1900s, old-world Gyesan Cathedrals, March First Independence Movement Road and the houses of Korean patriots, Lee Sang-hwa & Seo Sang-don. The tour highlighted some of Daegu's most interesting cultural elements in a fun and educational way.
After the tour, we headed to Taeoreum Clinic in Suseong-gu to experience oriental medical treatment. The doctor diagnosed constitutional type and health condition of individuals and people got Chuna treatment to heal their illnesses. Some people had acupuncture and traditional oriental medicine cupping treatment depending on their symptoms. Oriental medicine uses natural herbs and non-invasive treatment methods. We could experience slow and delicate treatment, which was calming and relaxing.
Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herb Medicine Culture Festival was the perfect festival to take a rest and heal our body and mind with delicate fragrances and a welcoming atmosphere.

Last year the appeal was a huge success as an overwhelming outpour of support saw gifts purchased for over 200 children. This would not be possible without the help from the foreigner community in Daegu who amazed us with their generosity and support. We hope to make this year bigger and better and are asking everyone who can to buy a gift for a deserving child this Christmas!
The appeal begins early November when you can visit at one of the designated meeting points throughout the city and register with Daegu’s Time to Give. You will be given the gender and age of a child in need and have until mid-December to purchase 20,000won worth of presents and return them. Each one of you makes a huge difference in this appeal and your involvement is
truly appreciated by the children and larger community. So get into the festive season this year and help out some deserving children by making their Christmas a little brighter!

So Long Daegu And Thanks For the Memories

ment’s thought. Only now, as my time here in South Korea is drawing to an end, has its real meaning become apparent to me.
Almost four years ago, I left the isle of saints and scholars with a heavy heart. Having just arrived back from 2 years in Australia, I embraced all the best that Ireland has to offer - the aspects of our culture that I

had yearned for during my stint down under. I spent a wonderful summer partaking in the comradery and banter of the Galway Races, reuniting with old friends, cruising along the majestic coast of Antrim and belting ballads over a fire in a teeny tiny pub in Dooneen. Alas, opportunity knocked and my summer fling was over. I was off again, this time for South Korea.
Prior to my arrival in Korea, my knowledge of one of Asia’s most affluent nations was limited to Seoul and the summer hit “Gangnam Style.” I was no stranger to living in a foreign land but this was sure to be a dramatic life alteration. However, the promise of secure employment and a decent wage was enough to lure me to this oriental wonderland.
At that time, there was no way I could have predicted that Korea, the land of the morning calm, would have become such a cradle for me. My previous experience of Asia was non-existent. The metropolis of Daegu, where I presently reside, is viewed as one of the most conservative cities in Korea. The culture shock, as I had anticipated, was indeed intense. Both mentally and physically, I was dazzled by the blinding neon signs, the vast crowds scurrying in organised chaos and the constant awareness and reminders of being an outsider. Admittedly, it took a while to adjust to their way of life. Yet soon, it became “my” way of life. 내 -continued on p46-

With that, I heeded some good advice – live where you are living. Welcome the new change and get over your xenophobia. I learned Hangeul (the Korean language), attempted some martial arts, knocked back the soju and stuffed myself with kimchi, the national dish. My advice to anyone coming here is that a positive attitude accompanied by an open mind is the key to your happiness. Enjoy the comical sides of Korea. In some of the schools, the parents choose English names for their children to use during role play. It’s not often you are afforded the opportunity to teach children that have been “christened” Fried Chicken, Angry Bird or Iron Man. I currently have the entire cast of Frozen in my classroom. Try and assimilate your new surroundings.

Despite the obvious cultural gaps between here and Ireland, there are also some striking resemblances too. Koreans are often called the Irish of Asia, and I believe this has more to do with than their fondness of the drink (which to be fair, could rival Ireland’s). The country’s history echoes that of Ireland’s melancholic past. For so long, they too were seen to be inferior to their powerful neighbouring lands. They too are a country that has been segregated by civil war.
However, the real similarities between South Korea and the Emerald Isle are also evident in my everyday life. There is a recognizable sense of pride instilled within them. Much like the Irish, the Koreans possess a certain quality of warmth and affection. You can bear witness to

this in the local grocery store or your favourite coffee shop. The friendly raillery I am exposed to on a daily basis, is akin to the conduct in the local Centra in rural Ireland.
In a society that is ultimately consumed with modernity, innovation and the latest technological development, it is exhilarating to see social obligations remain a priority and that such duties are being fulfilled. If there is one thing that I will take home with me to Ireland, this admirable quality I see in so many Koreans will be it.
thing; doing the reverse is quite another. The feeling of sadness that Korea will soon be but a memory is palpable. In some ways, it feels as though time has stood still during my stay here. I have been in limbo, in a bubble. There is an almost timeless element when living abroad; so when exactly is it time to leave?

Every Thursday, Dennis Lee (G9) perfects his basketball dribbling with several other freshmen and juniors. Swiping his forehead, Dennis admitted that basketball is “the only activity I have…on Tuesday and Friday I have Korean Studies.” “The tournament is, maybe, in two months? I’m not sure. After I come back from school I take a long nap, and I feel instantly feel better. Still young and full of energy, I guess.”

Not having prepped for high school, Dennis spent the first few weeks of freshmen year in a confused stupor. With the increased amount of work as well as the advanced courses, he resorted to toiling until 1 am every night in Study Hall; his regular habits of sleeping late aided in his attentiveness in class and out.
“I don’t sleep in class,” Dennis confirmed, “but biology with Mr. January is difficult—it’s my first time learning it,” When asked what his favorite subject would be, he

replied immediately: “P.E, I guess. We play and it’s pretty cool.” But the dim prospects of physical movement in the years ahead—for eleventh graders P.E. is not a requirement—depresses Dennis. He also expresses, albeit briefly, the disappointment in not having passed the geometry skip test despite his devotion to it over the summer.
Mrs. Cross, who taught Dennis in 8th grade and Dennis’s brother, Derek, now a proud alumni of DIS, had mixed advice for Dennis: “[Dennis] is very capable of adjusting. It’s a matter of whether he keeps his mind on it.” This year, DIS accepted about sixty-five additional students, some of whom befriended Dennis, such as Eric Lee, Matthew Lee, and Anna Dean, whom he “doesn’t
know very well, yet.” At the end of June, however, some of Dennis’s good friends have left the school.
“I stayed because this is the only place where I can possibly learn English and develop my skills…this is more valuable [than a Korean school experience], I think. [Although] this year I’ll be staying, I’m still discussing with my parents [about leaving for America].” Aware of the complications involved in moving across the Pacific, as his brother has done recently, Dennis patiently waits for the two hundred and more school days to fly by.

In his free time Dennis immerses himself in vivid Shakespearean literature, specifically Romeo & Juliet, one of the many reading requirements in his English class this year. Improving his English through reading is one of his “primary goals”, but lest he flounder other academic subjects, he promises to focus on Biology and World Cultures, along with Spanish; as a former Chinese student, learning Spanish is a “truly new experience”.
“[The interview] took seven minutes?” Dennis laughed, and rushed back to the cacophony of basketball players, feet scuttling on the sweaty gym floors.

Daniel Jung (G12) has done it again. Daniel has revolutionized the rather simple school uniform; fit and zipped up, the loose jacket is an attractive garment, secretly an H&M navy-colored jacket with an embroidered DIS logo. The supposedly “awesome, new varieties of the school uniform”—and when he says “uniform,” it sounds like “new-niform”—simply wasn’t enough. Sophie Seo (G11) said that the first thing she noticed was his changed hair. “Hair,” she said in expressive gestures towards her head; “the hair molecules changed… or something.”

And why the fashion? Having grandiose future plans as a hair and fashion director in NYC, Daniel is all about writing college apps. Building resumes may be over for other seniors, but Daniel’s art school portfolio consumes his life outside of school. “I work on my art, ‘cause that’s what I want to do in the future. I’m actually wrapping up [college applications] by writing personal essays and I think I’m doing pretty well. No problems, really.”
“I just want to get into college. That’s my only wish right now.” Daniel’s single-minded goal is crystalized by the relatively lenient schedule he chose for the senior year, one that allows for a surplus of free time until his graduation. This is not to say Daniel is loath to challenging himself; by taking AP Art and AP Literature, he demonstrates to admissions officers his dedication to school studies.
Fortunately, some of his classes have emerged as his favorites: “AP Literature is, like, really nice. Ms. Eason is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, and whenever I have trouble with the material at hand, she helps me follow through and eliminate any difficulties.” His adventures only go so far, as he did not sign up for any new afterschool activities yet.

“I plan to next quarter. There’s greater diversity in our options—in everything, really.” The changes he encounters here attributes to his excitement for the new school year. While Daniel assigned himself, in the summer, heavy duties for academics and upcoming events, the actual school year keeps him perfectly entertained.
Some of the changes he anticipated coming into the senior year were privileges. Last year’s seniors had the privilege of making a trip outside of school to grab coffee and hanging out in the Senior Lounge, which has now all but disappeared, and already Mr. Odom and Mr. Mastreani took the seniors out for shabushabu during lunch. Daniel doesn’t consider this as a privilege, however. “It’s more like [showing] the seniors the school’s gratitude.”
Again, returning to his current preoccupation, Daniel confidently asserted that senioritis was not afflicting him at all—in fact, he was unsure of the definition of “senioritis”, in all seriousness. “Senioritis? What does that mean again? Well, it’s my first quarter so what I’m doing right now goes into my college resume…I’m doing my best to get into a good college,” “I’m sure senioritis will catch on pretty soon, though,” he laughed.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor
Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Bongdeok-dong Area Hamimami's The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Daebong-dong Barazi Barazi brings Japanese flair to Daegu. Barazi specializes in great Japanese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a home away from home. The soothing atmosphere provides customers a chance to relax with a cup of tea or some warm saki! The owner of Barazi is also an expert florist and can help arrange all your floral needs. Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p59 for directions. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 010-4505-3396 • 13-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. <Daeghan News> 12PM~12AM • 053-423-3990 • 6, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu <Two Ppul> 5PM~1AM • 053-422-1033 • 7-15, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Pic&iq VIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reservation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

The restaurant uses organic vegetables and ingredients from their own farm. If you are a meat lover and looking for the best steak in Daegu, this may be the place to come. 1kg of succulent, juicy T-bone steak served with roasted potatoes and garlic is a mouth watering, inducing thought just waiting to fill your appetite.
