Let's Do Brunch
The Best Places in Daegu (Part 1) • Written and Photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva www.memoriesnotmaterialthings.com Translated by Yujeong Lee
Brunch. That one word conjures up a myriad of emotions and images. Lazy Sundays. Endless cups of coffee. Long chats with friends. Scrambled eggs. Crispy bacon. Freshly baked bread. A leisurely weekend brunch is one of my guilty pleasures. So for the past six months, I’ve been seeking out all the establishments in Deagu that I could find that do brunch. Here is my selection of the 10 Best. This is Part 1. Part 2 will appear in the December issue.
1. Best for Food - Schoron
For foodies, Schoron offers the tastiest fare with the best quality ingredients. Their brunch menu includes an extensive selection from banana pancakes to Eggs Benedict. My favorite is the New York Omelette delicately cooked to perfection with a mouthwatering filling of smoked salmon, capers and cream cheese served with a side salad and toasted wheat bread. This is a small, but chic establishment, near Banwoldang Subway Station. Take exit 23, head straight, turn right at the first major road and you’ll find it at the end. Address: 7 Myeongnyun-ro 11gil, Jung-gu.(중구 명륜로 11길 7)

2. Best for Atmosphere - Mansion5
Mansion5 is a sprawling cafe set in a traditionally styled Hanok building near to Dongseongro, but away from the bustle. This tranquil setting offers open picture windows that peer out unto a vast open courtyard and the wooden beam interior gives the place a cosy at home feel. There are numerous nooks and hideaways to while away several hours, including a wall of two seater tables that have plug sockets right at table height for you to charge your electronic devices. The brunch menu is limited - only Eggs Benedict and a set option with a bit of everything - but they have an delicious range of baked goods and paninis. It’s a 5min walk from Jungangro Station (Line 1, Red), Exit #1. Nearest bus stop is Yangnyeongsi. Address: 28 Jungang-daero 79-gil, Jung-gu.

3. Best for Large Groups - Woo’z
Woo’z offers several long eight seater tables - and even a private room - which are perfect for groups of friends or club meetings. They have a small brunch selection, but be warned it isn’t served until after 11am! I opted for the scrambled eggs with sausages and bacon. This was served with a fresh garden salad and a selection of three dips - sweet and sour, cream cheese and ranch. The other selections have a little more of a Korean slant with soups included in the set. Woo’z is also a bakery, so there are plenty of pastries and baked goods to purchase as sharing starters or desserts. Located a five minute walk from Sincheon Station (Line 1, Red), Exit #5. Walk straight. Cross over the next major intersection and it is just there in front of you. A ddress: 2 Songna-ro 10-gil, Dong-gu (동구 송라로10 길 2)

Let's Do Brunch
4. Best for Baked Goods - Paris 16
Paris 16 has a great atmosphere with a chic eclectic decor - including a life-size white fiberglass horse with a lamp jutting out of its head - but the star of the show here is the French inspired bakery downstairs. If you can pry your taste buds away from the delicacies on offer, head to the 3rd floor where brunch awaits. There is a selection of several set menus to choose from, some which come with a slice of cake. The best part is that each menu is served with a small wooden board of freshly baked bread. My favorite is the spicy, cheese omelette. A 3 minute walk from Beomeo Station (Line 2, Green), Exit #1. Head straight, cross over one road and you will find it. Address: 2383 Dalgubeol-daero, Suseong-gu.( 수성구 달구벌대로 2383)

5. Best for a Day Out - Whole Grain
If you want to combine brunch with an afternoon of culture, then head to Whole Grain. This gem of a cafe recently reopened after an extensive refurbishment. One of its best features is its covered outdoor terrace. Great for alfresco dining. On the menu you can find Eggs Benedict, French Toast, Shakshuka, and even a BLT Sandwich. I opted for the classic brunch of scrambled eggs, mushrooms, sausage, bacon and tomato. A short stroll away is Kim Kwang-seok Mural Alleyway. This pedestrian avenue is lined with street art honoring the late Korean singer. Additionally, there is music streaming, cute little shops and some arcade games. A great option for an afternoon date on a nice day. A 10 minute walk from KNU Hospital Subway Station (Line 2, Green), Exit #3. Head straight and turn right at the first road. Address: 18 Dongdeok-ro, 14-gil, 41952.
18 I hope this got your taste buds going. Look out for Part 2 in the December issue. For more ideas on what to do in Korea, check out my blog at: memoriesnotmaterialthings.com Welcome G'Day Lab G'Day Cafe Opens New Location Downtown
• Written by Alex A-Che Photos by Park Jihwan Translated by Yujeong Lee
G'Day Cafe, an Aussie style café owned by Geenie and Yeon Joo, is located near Beomeo junction. It boasts a varied café menu including anamazing homemade focaccia bread that Geenie learned to make when she became a certified baker. G’day is also popular for its wonderful Australian all-day brunch and owners that are so sweet; many customers continue to come back with fierce loyalty. Recently, we sat down with Geenie at the new G’day Lab that recently opened near downtown. G’day Lab is not the first G’day here in Daegu. For our new readers, can you tell us a little about the beginning of G’day? We opened the first G'day in 2006. It was right after my sister and I came back from Australia, where we spent couple of years studying, and decided to open the first Aussie -style cafe in Korea. Five years later, we expanded G'day and moved to the current Beomeo location. In 2014, we also opened G'day Garage in Itaewon (Kyungnidan), Seoul. While we are moving G'day Garage to another location in Seoul, we opened G'day Lab in Daegu.

What Australian flavors did you want to bring to your food? What have been some favorites for expats and Koreans? We wanted to bring not only the flavors that Aussies enjoy, but also the cozy atmosphere that most of the local cafes have in Australia. I guess that specific Aussie spirit we tried to put into our menu is appreciated by our customers, especially foreign ones who miss their home food. For G'day, expats' favorites are the Sydney Breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausages, bread, caprese, and a salad), the Melbourne Breakfast (mushrooms and chicken with cream sauce, egg, bread, and a spinach salad), and the Pesto Chicken (chicken with pesto sauce on bread, and a salad).
DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2016
Koreans' favorites are also the Sydney Breakfast, the Melbourne Breakfast, and the Aussie sandwich (grilled chicken, marinated vegetables with sundried tomato and cheese). -continued on p14-

G’Day Lab just opened a few weeks ago. What will G’Day Lab be focusing on? Compared to the more classic brunch cafe concept G'day has, G'day Lab is a more casual-style cafe & pub. Located within walking distance from the city center, G'day Lab will be a great choice for those who like a laid-back style cafe or pub. Along with its main menu 'the Jaffle', G'day Lab offers a variety of choices from coffee, to beer, to a special bingsu (ice flake dessert). As its name indicates, we will try new recipes at G'day Lab and bring the popular ones to G'day as well. How would you describe a "jaffle" to non- Australians who have never heard of it? For those non-Aussies, a jaffle is a stuffed toasted sandwich. It is traditionally made in a jaffle iron - a type of closed metal skillet. A fresh sandwich is enclosed in the jaffle iron and then the jaffle iron is placed on top of a stove or in a campfire. The resulting sandwich is sealed around the edges and the sandwich ingredients are deliciously cooked and melted. So far at G'day Lab, both expats and Koreans like the Bush Chook Jaffle (pesto chicken and cheese) and the Rover's Brekkie Jaffle (scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese).

Welcome G'Day Lab
Some would call this a comfort food. You have a variety of flavors. How did you come up with each one? We tried to focus on the basic recipes we learned from local cafes in Australia. To those basics, we added some flavors and factors Koreans would appreciate. Using fresh ingredients is another secret to our recipes. You’ve got a decent selection of beers. Can you tell me about them? Any favorites? When I was in Seoul (Itaewon), there were lots of beers from other countries and foreigners love to drink their hometown brewery beer. So, I chose the most favorite ones among them and brought them here for our foreigner customers in Daegu. And my favorite is IPA because of its hoppy and malty taste.
http://www.daegucompass.com
G'Day Lab is about experimenting. What kind of special recipes do you see yourself trying out in the next few months? The signature menu of G'day Lab is the jaffle. So, I started the menu with only the jaffle sandwich, but I have plans to make the jaffle brunch (a jaffle with a salad). Perhaps a ricotta cheese salad soon ^^. G’day Lab is an easy and quick snack place to visit. Have a beer with a jaffle and relax in an Australian-inspired bar. To get to this location, take the green line to Kyungpook Hospital Station and take exit 4. Walk north until you reach the hospital parking lot (Paris Baguette and Lotteria will be

across the street. Don’t go past these places). Take a right for 2 tiny blocks, and you will see an elementary school ahead. Make a right before going past the school, and walk down the small alley. G’day Lab will be on the corner. Thai Royal Cuisine & Street Food Arrives in Daegu • Written by Kimberly Williams Photos by Kimberly Williams and Bitna Kim Translated by Yujeong Lee
If you have been downtown lately, you may have come across a new Thai Restaurant by the name of Vangkok. I was first introduced to it by my friend Khia who raved about a brand new restaurant that was beautifully decorated and had amazing food. Intrigued, I decided to try it and I am glad I did. Vangkok Royal Thai Cuisine is a combination of fine dining, street food, and a coffee shop.

Inspired by his experiences while living in Thailand, Chef/Owner Bitna Kim wanted to provide an authentic Thai dining experience in Daegu. Having an impressive background in both Industrial Design and Culinary Arts, Vangkok is Chef Kim’s first restaurant. The inspiration behind the name comes from the feelings that Bangkok evokes. As Chef Kim explained, when people think of Thailand, they think of Bangkok. Vangkok is a happier play on the word and he wants to elicit the same happiness people experience when they visit Bangkok.

Chef Kim imagined what the inside of the Thai Kingdom would look like and translated that vision into the creation of the restaurant. The exterior resembles a hotel resort and the interior is immaculately decorated with decor imported from Thailand. An open kitchen, indoor garden and fountain, veranda beds, embellished mirrors and emerald colored walls, adorned bathrooms, and exposed concrete and pipes, creates a blended contemporary and vintage atmosphere. Tucked-away nooks create a more intimate environment, and a party room located on the third floor has a private kitchen. The menu features a variety of dishes including noodles, rice, a special menu, and new items are added daily. I have had the Green Curry, Shrimp Pad Thai, Thai Style Beef Steak, and Gui Tiao Har-Guow - a shrimp won tang noodle soup- and all were equally delicious! The secret behind the authentic taste of the food are the chefs who are all from Thailand. They are a team that has cooked together before and it is evident in the way the dishes harmoniously come together. The main chef cooked at famous hotels and resorts in Thailand and now has brought his expertise to Daegu. The team understands that real Thai food is strong in taste, and have focused on creating dishes that are more complementary to the Korean palate. As a result, Vangkok is more fusion and meals are tailored to the preferences of guests. Vangkok is currently the only Thai Food Restaurant that serves Thai Street Food. Inspired by Bangkok’s popular street food culture, Vangkok has a curb-side grill that allows party goers to quickly grab a bite to eat on the way to their next rendezvous.

If you are a fan of Thai food, consider dining at Vangkok. Thai décor, Thai chefs, fresh ingredients, a variety of sauces imported from Thailand, and Thai beer on tap are just a few of the many reasons to check it out. Vangkok is a piece of Thailand in the heart of Daegu and is a beautiful expression of culinary art and design. Daegu After Dark Bulgogi Tents Ignite a Following
• Written and photographed by Bridgett Hernandez www.thenakedforeigner.com Translated by Jessica Haesook Park
Foreign bloggers have long described Bukseongro bulgogi tents as “Daegu’s best-kept secret,” “a must-see spot” and “the best bulgogi” they’ve ever had – and for good reason; these tents live up to the hype. Featured several times on Korean television, this spot may not be a secret, but it truly is a gem – a diamond in the rough to be precise. By day, Bukseongro is home to industrial tool shops, but after dark, a nocturnal world springs from the neighborhood’s vacant lots. Bukseongro is a golmok, a street that offers several restaurants and vendors specializing in the same food. Daegu is home to many of

these specialized alleys including chicken gizzard alley, jjimgalbi alley, seafood at Chilseong Market, kalguksu at Seomun Market, etc. The bulgogi tents are spread out over a couple blocks. However, the liveliest area is a row of about five restaurants under a single canopy. From the Bukseongro branch of Daegu Bank, walk one block north and take the first left – or just follow your nose! Upon turning the corner, you will be greeted by a chorus of apron-clad women steering people toward their restaurants, shouting out their menu and prices.

This reception was quite unlike anything I’d ever seen in Daegu, so we asked one of the “bulgogi ladies” about this.” We’re all friends here”, she said. “It’s not a serious competition; it’s fun.” It makes people feel welcome. They get customers from all over Korea as well as foreign visitors. We watched as she worked her magic, making conversation with regulars and sometimes physically pulling people into her section! It doesn’t matter that it’s quite crowded already. “Ah, jaemee eetda,” she said with a smile, her eyes shining in the light of the tents and the glow of the charcoal stoves. “Ah, it’s fun.” “People come here to let loose”, she said. “The party lasts from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.” “Here they can talk loudly, laugh loudly, sing loudly, argue loudly,” she said. The tents are an intersection of nightlife and street food. Patrons sit on plastic stools around plastic tables in what is essentially a parking lot. The tents are lit by bare bulbs, and, in lieu of napkin dispensers, rolls of toilet paper are hung from the ceiling. -continued on p22-

I’ve been to the tents on a Tuesday night and a Saturday night, and the vibe was the same: lively, crowded and, yes, loud! Walking into the tent, the air is thick with the smell of cooking meat, smoke, the clinking of soju shot glasses and steam rising from bowls of noodles. A young, mostly-local crowd flocks here to consume copious amounts of meat, noodles and alcohol. The regulars we talked to said it’s the cheap price that keeps them coming back. One group of university students said they come there twice a week. When I asked what their favorite menu item was, without hesitation, they gestured to a green, glass bottle of soju on the table before breaking into laughter.

There’s no mistaking that people come here to drink. It’s a great place for a cheap night out. However, the cheap and delicious food makes the trip more than worth it. All the restaurants serve more or less the same food, so don’t get too stressed about making a decision. The menu is simple: bulgogi and udon noodles. Some restaurants offer spicy gochujang bulgogi and chicken feet too.

Marinated pork is charbroiled over a charcoal stove. The meat is tender and slightly chewy with crispy edges and a sweet, smoky flavor. The bulgogi is piled high and served family style. The greasy goodness pairs well with sides of pickled radish, kimchi radish and onions in soy sauce. A bowl of udon noodles rounds out the meal. Each steaming bowl is filled with thick noodles in a flavorful broth with fish cake, green onions, seaweed paper and chili flakes. Even if you don’t speak Korean, the menu is simple enough to easily decipher. The left side of the menu has the bulgogi serving sizes. 특대teuk-dae is extra large, 대dae is large, 중joong is medium and 소so is small. Under that is 우동udon soup. The right side of the menu has the alcohol selection. The smallest portion of bulgogi (5,000 won) is a generous amount for one person or enough to share between two people if you order soup too. The largest (20,000 won) is enough to feed four or five people. How to get there 가는 방법 Bukseongro bulgogi tents are a 20-min walk or a short taxi ride from Jungangro subway station. Ask the taxi driver to take you to 북성로 돼지불고기골목 Bukseongro Dwaeji Bulgogi Golmok. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Mary Poppins Cafe
Are you looking for a special café in Daegu? A place with quite a different style and a place where you can relax and ease your mind. Why not try the locally run “Mary Poppins.” It is special because the owner puts a lot of effort into making his desserts and getting to know his customers. After sitting in a chair, the cafe’s owner will hand you a blue catalogue with the menus. We went with our teacher and ordered a vanilla latte, green tea latte, chocolate choux, dutch coffee sherbet and a green tea roll. I usually get chocolate drinks, but when I tried the vanilla latte, it was really pleasant. The sweetness of vanilla and sugar

and the scent of the coffee was really well-mixed. What makes this latte special from other cafes is that the vanilla was hand-made, so I feel like it’s tastier and healthier than a normal cafe’s latte. The owner recommended the green tea roll, as it is the best-selling item on the menu, and it tasted awesome! It satisfies both those who love green tea and those who love sweet desserts. The harmony of the green tea and sweetness made me feel so good, especially the soft outer-part and creamy inside. The dutch coffee sherbet was soft and cold. Maybe you can say that it’s just cold ice and ice cream, but wait until you pour the coffee. The coffee is bitter, and the cafe’s owner made it with a carefully chosen, locally roasted coffee beans. If you are a coffee connoisseur, you will love it.
http://www.daegucompass.com
There are 37 kinds of drinks and desserts on the menu, including coffees, teas, shaved ices, choux and roll cakes. The menu items are reasonably priced. On the menu, the roll cakes are around 5,000 won, shaved ice sherbet was 9,000 won to 10,000 won. If you want more Dutch coffee, ice cream, or nuts, you have to pay 1,000 won for each. Do Yeob, Lee is the owner of the cafe. I asked him when he feels good and what is the hard part of running a cafe. He replied, “When the customers say the dish is tasty, or when I get to meet and communicate with customers; that’s when I feel really good.” He said that he wanted to be different from ordinary franchise coffee shops. “Actually, franchise coffee shops have advantages, too. You can find them anywhere and get coffee easily, but I wanted to run a cafe which has ‘story’.“ Yeobenjoys interacting with customers and he wants to be familiar with the visitors. His cafe is a place where people can relax and daydream. It is a place of recharging. He wants to make his cafe evoke a ‘feeling’ not just a place for drinking coffee. -continued on p26-

But there’s also hard parts. One hardship is making the desserts. It’s extremely hard work and needs a lot of effort. But making the perfect dish is his belief of running a cafe. He wants to serve the family healthy and unique dishes, and he has to work harder than a franchise. He has to spend more time, money, effort, and concentration. For example, he makes the syrup by himself. The ingredients are fresh and he doesn’t want to lose the natural features. He doesn't process the ingredients where possible. He also spends almost two hours kneading the dough for the cakes and the cream chouxs. So actually, he is walking a tough road.

As for the cafe name, he thought a lot about this and choose Mary Poppins after he saw a performance of the musical when he travelled to England. “She makes family happy with magic.” Because of it, the main theme of the cafe is ‘family’. That’s also why it’s decorated with legos, toys, and travel books. Yeob said he wanted a cafe that all family members can enjoy and not only a place for young women, that’s why there are so many books and themes for the kids. When you enter the cafe, you will be astonished by the things on the walls and bookshelves, especially if you are a lego maniac. You can find many high quality, unique lego miniatures. He also wants to remind the customers of their overseas travels. Because of that, there is one more thing special about this cafe. It has stamp cards, but they aren’t normal. Each time you purchase a coffee, you can get a reward stamp on cities of well known countries. You can stamp on Rome in Italy, Sydney in Australia, and many others. It is a fun way of collecting stamps.

I think you can have great time in this cafe. Not only is the food delicious, you can also engage in conversation with the owner!
Location and Hours
The cafe is located on Songra-ro 13, Donggu. It is open from 13:00 to 23:00 except every first and third Monday. There is no parking lot so I would recommend using public transportation. The nearest subway is Sincheon (Line 1, Red), 10 minutes walk.

It’s Thanksgiving at the Pascal household, a good twenty years after the death of JFK. Arriving in the middle of a hurricane are Marty and his fiancée, Lesly. Marty’s obsessive twin sister, Jackie-O, is keen to renew her long-running incestuous affair with Marty, which is fine with their mother, Mrs. Pascal. Things get even more complicated when their younger brother, Anthony, immediately falls for Lesly. As the storm rages on outside, a true battle for Marty’s affections becomes something of insanity within their cozy Mid-Atlantic home, just down the road from the Kennedys. Speaking of insanity, Jackie-O’s been off her meds for quite some time, throwing up pills for the better part of the last six months since her beloved twin brother left for New York City. The slightest thing may set her off; her misplaced hairbrush, the lack of ice in the freezer, and especially the arrival of a new nemesis is enough to push her over the edge.

The House of Yes

The Daegu Theatre Troupe proudly presents Wendy MacLeod’s obsidian-black comedy, “The House of Yes”. It is a play near and dear to our director, Tammy Rak. Each actor was hand-picked to fulfill her vision, and have met and exceeded all expectations in bringing this unorthodox tale to life. Original presentations of this play have received rave reviews, and have starred theatre veterans such as Allison Janney (Mom, The West Wing) in the role of Mrs. Pascal. The current cast has been rehearsing for several months; polishing the numerous subtleties hidden within the playbook.

This presentation of “The House of Yes” stars Craig Wainwright as Marty, the noble and better half of his twin sister; Hannah Byrne as Lesly, the know-it-all fiancée/antiJackie; Owen Nagels as Anthony, the innocent but tactfully cunning younger brother; Jenn Galle as Jackie-O, the sweet but erratic (and possibly psychopathic) twin sister; and Sandra Stanton as Mrs. Pascal, the passive yet everobservant matriarch of this dysfunctional family. Don’t miss out on your chance to come see the hidden gems of Daegu perform live at Actor Story Theatre located near Namsan Station (on Monorail – line 3). A portion of the proceeds raised by “The House of Yes” will be donated to KUMFA (Korean Unwed Mothers Families Association). -continued on p30-

Charitable performances are nothing new to the Daegu Theatre Troupe. This past February, DTT performed the controversial and captivating Vagina Monologues by activist writer, Eve Ensler. The show consisted of 22 actresses who came together to share unique stories of women around the world who experienced pain, love and sexual awakenings. We were so happy to have such an amazing turn out of expatriates and local Korean theatre lovers. The proceeds were donated to the local KUMFA house to the sum of 2 million won. We were so shocked and thankful for all the support of the Daegu community and were eager to get another opportunity to help in any way we could.

Considering a Career Change?
Use These Skills You've Developed While Living Abroad
g Considerin a Career Change?
• Written by Terry Faulkner https://terryofaulkner.com/ Translated by Yujeong Lee
There have been a number of articles written recently about expats returning home after so many years abroad, often focused on the difficulty readjusting to reverse culture shock. This article is for those wishing to return but not quite sure how to translate their experience. As an educator/education designer, you should know that you have skills coveted by any employer who cares about having a competent 21st-century workforce. Reading a room, observing group dynamics, listening, organizing ‘lesson’ plans, helping people break down complex things into simple elements and communicating clearly in order to function as a high-performance unit are but a few of the skills you might have developed as a teacher over here.

Considering a Career Change?
Every field with any knowledge-based job (which is most jobs these days) is looking for people who strive to continually learn and be able to adapt to shifting digital landscapes ... and teach others what they learn. All companies strive to keep up with changing technology and buyer (or student) habits. Having lived overseas for more than a quarter of my life, I've learned a few things that made me realize I do have the skills necessary to reintegrate back home successfully.

Cultural Intelligence
In 2002, I signed a ten-month contract in a city located “close” to Shanghai. My salary was 3,000 RMB ($360) per month and my one bedroom apartment was spartan. I loved it. I quickly discovered that I was nowhere near the bright lights of Shanghai and that I would need to learn to at least speak Mandarin if I was to survive. I loved being

a pseudo-celebrity in small-town China. After extending my contract into the second year, I began to fall out of love with China and its blatantly obvious love affair with development at the expense of the environment. Korea was the next step; different and although I did not experience the initial rush of a new and foreign culture, I noticed a deeper appreciation of nature and a strict adherence to politeness. Yes, there are things in Korean culture I cannot understand but over the years I have learned to distinguish between what is possible and things beyond my control. In every culture there are certain things that are non-negotiable and realizing this has led to greater cultural intelligence. I now feel confident working with people from any culture and/or value system focusing on the project, not our perceived differences. -continued on p34-

Communication Skills
compromise. Arguably, Korea is one of the most difficult places for westerners to work in terms of communication. Expectations are quite distinct as Confucianism and deference to elders far outweigh the norms of meritocracy you might be accustomed to in the West. Being able to identify real problems in a foreign place of business that are never mentioned directly (strictly based on cultural cues) is a skill that cannot be acquired elsewhere.
Every job applicant claims to have has excellent communication skills. While most people have communication struggles every now and then at the office, for expats working in a foreign language environment these difficulties increase exponentially as ordinarily normal exchanges can go far beyond “cultural differences” or “language barriers.” Thus, living and working abroad requires you to become an effective and thoughtful communicator and negotiator. Working with administrators, learners and other stakeholders while navigating linguistic and cultural differences forces you to develop great listening skills. Considering a Career Change?
The best moments of my life have been overseas, as have some of the worst. Experiencing the birth of my children was at once beautiful and terrifying. As my wife’s anesthesia failed to work, she writhed in pain as I was helpless in helping her and I was then told I would be unable to hold my own daughter for another two days only to see her behind a glass screen. Additionally, not a broken arm, SARS, MERS, nor food poisoning ever strayed me from my course. Resilience and sheer will helped me navigate through major personal and professional struggles despite sometimes feeling trapped in a foreign cultural bureaucracy.

All the other things we do in our lives like paying bills, establishing residency, filing taxes among others become much more complicated living abroad. Most English teachers arrive without a basic understanding of the language (if any), having to deal with unfamiliar transportation, medical, or legal systems and I for one started my life as an expat as far as one could get from being detail oriented. Now I rely heavily on calendars and to-do lists to make sure things are done accurately and timely.
The preceding skills are essential in today's workforce and as time goes on, employers will see the value in taking on repatriates with many of these skills in their arsenal. I'd like to personally thank Martin Tuttle and Steven Ward for inspiration and ideas for and about this post.

• Written by Ben Tanaka Photos by Gannett Cassidy Translated by Yujeong Lee
Last June, Daegu Seomun Market opened their night market. The 350-meter street, from the entrance across from the Dongsan Medical Center, has become a hot spot for a night out. There are 80 vendors, including 65 food vendors and 15 shopping vendors, and they attract tourists and local citizens to the market every evening. Over 1 million people visited Seomun Night Market within 10 days of its opening, and the market has become a mustvisit place in Daegu. The market also has some cultural content, including a performance spot on the outside wall of the parking lot, which features programs organized by the Culture Street Committee. These programs include dance performances, live music, and local buskers. All of these programs are designed to capture visitors’ eyes and ears.

The Daegu Compass offered a Seomun Night Market Tour to local expats on Sept. 24th and Oct. 8th. During these two trips, many people showed their interest. The tour started with participants receiving a nametag, Seomun Market eco-bag, and water bottle. Tourists boarded an open-top, double-decker city tour bus, where visitors could appreciate a night view of Daegu. All participants sat on the second deck and enjoyed the ride and cool breeze. It was a unique, fun way to travel around Daegu. When the bus went through a tunnel, it felt like we were on an amusement park ride.

From the signature food of Seeded Hoddeok to fusion-style food, there are many options to entertain your taste buds. Also, the market boasts unique drinks, including ade in bulb-shape cups with lights and milk tea in panda-shape bottles. There were more things to see and the shopping was great during the second trip. Since it was the Korea Sales Festa, a shopping & tourism festival which combines events for foreign tourists, there were special shopping discounts and a Hallyu Culture Festival. After hanging out at the Seomun Night Market, everyone got on the bus again and headed to Suseongmot Lake. The guide explained the Kim Gwang-seok Road on the way to the lake; she was entertaining and it was helpful to have her on our bus. There was a festival happening at the lake and we couldn’t get off the bus, so we had to watch it from the second deck, but it was not bad. It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to have a good night outside after the long hot summer. With the cool breeze of fall, enjoy Seomun Night Market with their delicious food!

Where did they go? Why did they carve so many faces? Was life much different from today? There are moments in life when time seems to be procrastinating from itself. Siem Reap and Angkor Archeological Park in Cambodia are places where this strange phenomenon seems to occur. Siem Reap is slowly expanding upwards with new construction and an increase in tourism every year. This is of course due to the beautiful, mystical and ancient temples within the Angkor Archeological Park. There are so many different temples to visit, but this tale focuses only on a select few and my tour guide who made the entire experience feel like a documentary.

There are many ways to explore the temples of Angkor Wat. Tuktuks, scooters, bicycles, cars or those moving poles attached to your body are the options for getting around the Archeological Park. The place is massive. I recommend renting a car with A/C and a tour guide. I choose to do the sunrise to sunset tour withRany; search for “Siem Reap Tour Guide Rany - Private Day Tours” on Google, and his name comes up as number #24 out of 674 tour guide companies. This is my first guided tour I’ve ever paid money for, but Rany doesn’t disappoint. He picks me up at 4:45am in front of Anachak Boutique Hotel, a fairly new hotel with a swimming pool and a great view of the city. It’s also close to “Pub Street,”SiemReap’s foreigner nightlife district. -continued on p42-

Tour Angkor Wat In Style
We make our way to the ticket center, where there are hundreds of people rushing to buy their tickets in time to see the sunrise. Visitors can purchase 1, 3 or 7 day tickets. I only need a one-day pass, so we are able to skip the lines and head over to the far right of the ticket center. We make it just in time to the south entrance of Angkor Wat. People are waiting in front of the little lake for the sun to rise behind the famous Angkor Wat temple. The mixture of colors in the sky create a living painting where clouds dance, insects chirp and Angkor Wat wakes up.

We spend about 3 hours exploring Angkor Wat; Rany explains the history and details of the temple. It’s almost as if I’m watching a Discovery Channel documentary. During this time, Rany takes photos of me and the temple with my extra camera. Turns out, Rany is a fantastic photographer as well. He makes sure to get me in shots where there are no other or very fewpeople. After this, he drops me off at my hotel to cool off and picks me back up in an hour. -continued on p44-

Rany accommodates my every request, doesn’t rush and allows me to have my own time to explore the temples. Next,we headup to Angkor Thom, and the Bayon temple, which has 54 towers and 216 faces ofAvalokiteshvara. The faces are incredible, and each one has a unique expression, etched into stone - until the end of time. He takes me to the famous Ta Prohm, where Angelina Jolie starred in Tomb Raider. The jungle is slowly swallowing up this ancient temple. We then head to BanteaySrei. The red sandstone has allowed these ancient carvings, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, to retain their intricate details. It takes 40 minutes to arrive from Angkor Wat, but this is by far one of the most impressive temples. After this, we head back towards Angkor Wat to watch the sunset at PraeRoup. The sunset creates a visual mixture of colors and textures. The red sandstone and bricks reflect a warm orange cloud of light like being trapped in an incandescent light bulb. Rany shows me the best spot to absorb the day’s end. He drops me back at my hotel afterwards and thanks me for the wonderful day.

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2016
The tour costs $85, not including the Angkor Wat Archeological Pass, which is quite expensive for Cambodia. Some people might hesitate or want to DIY it to save money, but I’m extremely satisfied I have had Rany explaining the rich culture and history of the temples throughout the day. Plus, the air conditioned car and cold water he provided throughout the day really made the entire experience more enjoyable. He is now the measuring stick for all future tour guides I choose in the future.

Many of the guest houses are located in what is considered "old Daegu" and still retain much their traditional charm. The owners are very helpful in setting up tours and guides around the city and offer activities for their guests to take part in during their stay. If you're just passing through, or looking to stay for an extended time, Daegu's guest houses are always open.

Gajok
Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Daehan News / Two Ppul
Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road
Kyungpook Uni. Area
Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
