Rejoice after Suffering Oct. 6 (Thu.) - Nov. 5 (Sat.), 2016

La Bohème Oct. 6 (Thu.) - 7 (Fri.) 7:30pm, 8 (Sat.) 3pm Daegu Opera House Around 1830, in Paris, France, there are four Bohemians: the poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard, and the philosopher Colline in an old attic. They are poor, but happy. On the night of Christmas Eve, they all intend to go to a bar, but Rodolfo has not finished writing his poem yet. Rodolfo promises to join them soon, and the others leave. A neighbor, Mimi, knocks on Rodolfo’s door, and she asks him to light her candle for

her. But Rodolfo’s candle goes out too. At that moment, Mimi accidentally drops her key. When the two search for it in the dark, they touch each other’s hands and they fall in love. At Cafe Momus, Rodolfo introduces Mimi to his friends. Musetta, who has been Marcello’s lover arrives. The six friends enjoy their Christmas Eve. The next year, Mimi visits Marcello. Mimi consults him about Rodolfo who has recently been cold to her. Then, Rodolfo visits Marcello. Mimi hides at once. Rodolfo tells Marcello that he loves Mimi, but he is so poor that can’t buy any medicine for her tuberculosis. Then, Rodolfo notices Mimi. They love each other, but they decide to live separately. After some time, Musetta runs into the bohemian’s room. Mimi is inside, dying, but wishes Rodolfo was at her side. His friends go out to find money to buy medicine for her. But when his friends come back, Mimi takes her last breath. Rodolfo shouts Mimi’s name, and breaks down crying.

to meet his friend Florestan again. He had thought that Florestan had died. Pizarro is arrested by the Minister. The Minister blesses Leonore and Florestan with love and justice. -continued on p10-

Oct. 13 (Thu.) 7:30pm / 15 (Sat.) 3pm Daegu Opera House In 16th century Seville, Spain, Don Pizarro (governor of the prison), puts Florestan, a politician, who attempted to expose Pizarro’s injustice into prison on a false charge. Florestan’s wife, Leonore, tries to rescue him. She uses the name “Fidelio”, dresses in men’s clothes, and works as an errand boy for the jailer, Rocco. She works faithfully for two years and gains Rocco’s confidence. Then, Pizarro hears that the Minister of Justice, Don Fernando, will come to the prison to inspect the injustices of the prison. Pizarro decides to kill Florestan in secret. Pizarro orders the jailer, Rocco, to dig a grave. Rocco orders Fidelio to help him. Fidelio has waited for an opportunity to rescue Florestan, and she only now notices that the physically and emotionally worn out man in the dungeon is her husband. Pizarro appears in the dungeon. When he attempts to stab Florestan to death with a sword, Fidelio interrupts him. She discloses her true character; she is Florestan’s wife. Then, the Minister of Justice, Don Fernando, arrives at the prison. He is pleased

In the mythological age, Orfeo grieves before the grave of his dear wife, Euridice, in the forest. Orfeo appeals to the Gods for her to live again. Then Amor, the god of love, appears and tells him that the almighty god, Jupiter, sympathizes with him and tells him to go to Hades, the god of death. She also says to Orfeo, “You must not look at her before you arrive in this world.” In front of the gate of Hades, Orfeo is surrounded by many spirits. When Orfeo plays the harp and expresses his sorrow, the spirits make way for him. In Hades, Orfeo waits for his wife in the beautiful sky and the brilliant sunshine. Euridice appears there. Orfeo leads her by the hand back to Earth. On the way back, Euridice worries about losing Orfeo’s affection, because he doesn’t look at her. Euridice sits down on a rock, and she appeals to him to remember his love for her. Orfeo can’t deny her request. When he looks back at her, she dies once more. Orfeo regrets it, and he tries to die. Then, Amor appears again and tells him that he has endured a lot. Amor sacrifices her life so Euridice can live. Orfeo and Euridice are pleased, and they give thanks to the gods.

On 17th June, 1800, Rome is ruled by fear. Republicanism collapses and shifts to royalism. One of the republicans, Angelotti, succeeds in breaking out of prison, rushes into the church, and meets up with Cavaradossi, his friend. Cavaradossi harbors Angelotti in his secret hideout. After the two leave the church, Scarpia, who chased Angelotti, enters the church. Scarpia meets Tosca, who is the singer and Cavaradossi’s lover, there. Scarpia tricks Tosca into going to Cavaradossi’s house, and he arrests Cavaradossi. Scarpia tortures Cavaradossi, but he doesn’t confess Angelotti’s whereabouts. Scarpia calls Tosca, and reveals her lover’s tortured state. Tosca reveals the route to the secret hideout. Word comes that Napoleon has won the Battle of Marengo, defeating royalism. Cavaradossi is delighted. Scarpia is furious with him and condemns Cavaradossi to death. Tosca begs Scarpia to save her lover's life. Scarpia demands that Tosca yield herself to him in exchange for her lover's life. As Scarpia goes to touch Tosca, she stabs him to death with a knife from the table. Tosca runs to Cavaradossi, who is confined to the castle of Sant'Angelo prison.

But, the firing squad carry out their orders to shoot Cavaradossi. When Scarpia’s subordinates rush to arrest Tosca for Scarpia's murder, she kills herself by leaping from the castle.

Carmen Nov. 4 (Fri.) 7:30pm - 5 (Sat.) 3pm Daegu Opera House Around 1820, in Seville, Spain, the most provocative gypsy of all, Carmen, is somewhere near a cigarette factory. There are a lot of men and women. She sings ‘Habanera’ and tries to woo the young soldier Don Jose, who isn’t interested in her. After that, Carmen is arrested because of a quarrel. However Carmen seduces the guard, Jose, and runs away. A month later, Jose who was imprisoned for letting Carmen slip away, has just been released, and he goes to meet her at a tavern. With a flower in his hand, he tells her his feelings. Jose decides to stay with Carmen and her group, who are smugglers.

Jose later regrets his choice. Carmen is already in love with another man, Escamillo, who is a bullfighter. Then, Joseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s childhood friend, Micaela, visits him. She informs him that his mother is seriously ill. Jose decides to go home. The following month, at the square in front of the bullfight arena, Escamillo is welcomed by the spectators. He enters the arena. Carmen remains at the square. Jose appears and demands that she leave with him, but she refuses. In rejection, Carmen throws away the ring that Jose once gave her. Jose stabs her to death with a dagger, and is shocked by his actions.

Jekyll & Hyde World Tour Arriving in Daegu this December

<Jekyll and Hyde World Tour>, co-produced by Korean and Broadway production companies, just announced the cast. They will have performances in Daegu in December, and in Seoul next March. <Jekyll and Hyde> is a sad thriller musical with a tragic romance among Jekyll/Hyde (who has opposing personalities), Emma, and Lucy. Auditions were held from March to July and the final cast for the world tour was announced in August. 한국과 브로드웨이 프로덕션의 공동 제작으로 주목 받고 있는 <

The main character, Jekyll/Hyde, has an extreme duality of good and evil, also sometimes referred to as dual personalities. This actor needs to have a high ability to act and sing, since he is effectively playing two very different roles. Bradley Dean was chosen to play Jekyll/Hyde; he has performed in musicals, <The Last Ship>, <Doctor Zhivago>, <Spamalot>, <Man of La Mancha> and more. Bradley said, “It is one of roles that I can portray well, a suffering soul or passionate and tempestuous character.”

Diana DeGarmo was cast as Lucy, one of the main characters. She loves Jekyll, but is loved by Hyde. This causes her to suffer in this tragic romance. Diana is well-known as a second-place winner of American Idol Season 3. She has shown powerful vocals and impressive performances through <Hairspray> and <Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat>, and grew up as a remarkable actress on Broadway. She said, “I’ve grown up with the music from <Jekyll and Hyde>”, and “It is an honor that I can sing my favorite song, ‘Someone Like You’, every night.”

All three leads will visit Korea to kick off the world tour. They shared their excitement and expectations about visiting Korea. Lindsey said, "It is amazing to join such a good musical with so many fans, and I am very excited for the tour.” For Diana, this is her first international tour. “I watched the Korean <Jekyll and Hyde> production. The Korean actors and actresses were fantastic. I know that I have big shoes to fill, and I hope to create my own Lucy.”

Gukak; it is the music by Koreans, which first originated and succeeded in Korea. However, there is a group ‘Gukak-er’ who strongly opposes the term. Yang Seong-pil, the leader of project group Feel so Good (必 so Good) states, “I feel sorry for Koreans who calls western music “classical music” and consider it as the basis of all kinds of music. I think Korean traditional music is the classical music of Korea, which has developed with Korean folks throughout our long history. Commonly, people think that the Korean scale is simple and has limitations, but they don’t understand it well. Korean traditional music is systematic and scientific, and you can’t find it easily in the rest of the world. And this music, with its beautiful and unique musical instruments, is as good as other music genres”.

Mr. Yang learned the Daegeum Sanjo (Free-style Solo of Korean traditional flute), the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 45, and he is a head of the Daegeum players of the Daegu Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra. As a local musician, he has released five solo albums, including his first, Sum (2001) to his fifth, Manpasikjeok (2014). From his third album, he tried various arrangements and techniques, infused with traditional style. His style has developed into a “fusion genre” and ultimately, he aims to attract more people to the deep world of traditional music through the sound of traditional instruments.

artifact contains a story, including the restaurant’s

most impressive feature – the hanok, traditional house, on its rooftop level. The house is no

reproduction; the home was transplanted from Pohang. The unique space is available to diners upon reservation.

¡Dios mio! Delivery Burritos! Burrito Factory Arrives in Daegu

Wistfully I dreamed. I dreamed of burritos the size of a

But let’s talk burrito delivery. Because, I mean, that’s really what should be talked about. There is

a minimum order for delivery, 19,900won. Which is the exact cost of the delivery exclusive two burrito

set, which comes with: two burritos, two soft drinks (strawberry, coconut, green apple), tortilla chips, two dipping sauces (salsa, cheese dip), and a bowl of soup (sweet corn, cream of mushroom, clam chowder).

The whole thing will run you just shy of 22,000 won after the 2,000 won delivery fee, and it’s more than

enough food for 2 people. Heck, you could probably

feed a family of three with it. Four, if dad’s not too

hungry. The owner speaks English and is usually close enough to the phone that ordering is as easy and

stress free as it could possibly be. I was made aware of the ETA, and got my food in well under it.

Subway: Take the green line to Beomeo. Head out exit 1

(facing west). Hang a right at the first light (currently an

Olive Young) walk one block until you come to the first side street hat forks off. Take the road that slants off to the left. Burrito Factory is right across from Ryu Coffee Roasters.

Bus: Off at the Beomeo station stop. Head east to the traffic light. Take a left by the Olive Young.

Medicity Daegu Set To Welcome 20,000 Medical Tourists

Medivally: The Heart of MedicityDaegu The city of Daegu is the heart of medical tourism in Korea. Over the years, the government has invested in making Daegu the core for medical research and medical outreach in Korea. To accommodate and to further its goals as a medical tourism city, since late 2011, Daegu has opened the doors to the Daegu Advanced Medical Complex (also known as MedivalleyDaegu because of the valley the city lies in) in the west side of Daegu. The 4 million dollar project is a cluster of advanced medical industries that were strategically created by the government to promote and improve Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medical industry. Its goals are to develop 16 new medicines and 18 kinds of medical equipment.

The New Drug Development Center, the Medical Device Development Center, the Laboratory Animal Center and the Clinical Drug Manufacturing Center were completed in 2013. Since 2014, the complex has actively done research and attracted companies to the complex. As of June 2016, Medivalley has attracted 49 companies into the Daegu Advanced Medical Complex and 60 companies into the Research Institute District.

Improvements in Service: A One-Stop Medical Service Provider and New Medical Tourism Insurance Options The Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion (DMTP) Institute offers total service support with the help of Daegu city. They offer information on clinics and hospitals in Daegu, interpretation services, accommodations, transportation and other necessities. As soon as a patient arrives in Daegu, a coordinator takes care of everything and offers an organized service package. There are 45 local clinics and hospitals designated as Leading Medical Institutes, named by the Daegu Government as trusted medical institutes. All Leading Medical Institutes in the country have insurance for medical malpractice. Daegu, however, has taken it a further step. It has prepared a better-quality insurance product for foreign patients. Daeguâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new medical tourism insurance covers all kinds of medical tourism-related injuries, making it the first such insurance -continued on p32-

product in South Korea. After long negotiations, Dongbu Insurance and the Daegu Metropolitan City agreed that medical tourists needed more than the basic health checkup protection and designed a product that covers injury and death and reimburses the costs of unexpected extended stays - up to 1 million won. The two parties signed an agreement to develop an insurance product that covers general injuries and accidents that may occur during the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medical tours.

Moving Forward to Become a City of Renowned International Medical Service Daegu has furthered its reach to other nations, drawing in tourists from around Asia. There are 12 Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Centers in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kazakhstan. China has a total of 9 promotion centers. They will have a Video Teleconference System (VTC) to have a doctor's consultation in Daegu. Daegu hopes to reach other countries with customized marketing program for places such as Russia, Kazakhstan and the Southeast Asia market.

Daeguâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sKyungpook National University Hospital opened the Qingdao International Medical Center and in the near future, Daegu will open a hospital with the Chinese company, Dongwon Investment Group. Long term, 100 Daegu clinics and hospitals will be built in China and 100 million Chinese patients would visit Daegu through collaborations with these hospitals. Patients will have to option to visit Korea through the Chinese local clinics for special treatments. With a lot of effort by the city, Daegu has established abundant infrastructures for its medical industry. It has increased the variety of foreign tourists coming into its programs; they come from China and the USA, Russia, Central Asia and Southeast Asia. Not too long ago, these patients would only focus on regular health check-ups but now Daegu is catering to their interests inits plastic surgery options, serious illness procedures and soforth, greatly expanding theDaegu medical tourism industry. Korea looks forward to the further development of MedicityDaegu in the near future.

Discovering Daegu Spend a day in Hwawon

Have you ever found yourself in a cab wondering where you were? Perhaps it was because you were not paying

attention or because the city is quickly growing and new buildings and businesses are popping up everywhere. More times than not, I found myself confused by my

surroundings and I realized, although I have been a

resident of Daegu for over a year, there are still many parts of the city that I haven’t seen. Which thenbegged the question: Why doIoften stay within the same 30-mileradius

of home and work?Or continually frequent the same places? I decided that I would go on a quest to truly

discover Daegu and get to know why it’s an awesome place to be.

택시 안에서 지금 어디에 있나 어리둥절해 본 적이 있는가? 아마 도 그건 밖에 별로 관심을 갖고 있지 않았거나 도시가 빨리 바뀌 고 새로운 건물들과 가게들이 여기저기서 생겨나기 때문일 것이 다. 보통, 주위환경 때문에 헛갈릴 때가 있는데 비록 필자가 1년

넘게 대구에서 살았지만 여전히 보지 못한 곳들이 많다는 것을

깨달았다. 이럴 때 드는 의문은 왜 집과 직장을 중심으로 50km 반경 내에서만, 혹은 계속해서 같은 장소에만 왔다갔다 하는 지 이다. 그래서 진정한 대구를 발견해보고 왜 대구가 멋진 곳인지 알기 위한 탐험을 해보기로 마음먹었다.

With the gracious assistance of my friend Sun Lee, I found myself in the town of Hwawon on a Sunday afternoon.

Home to a popular food and drinking street along with a traditional market, Hwawon is still considered the countryside by some. It was not until 1995 that this area became a part of Daegu,and now with the expansion of

Subway Line 1 (red line), Hwawon is more accessible than

before. This town has a lot to boast about including being

site of the first piano in Korea. The area known as Flower is home to a large park (also called Hwawon Resort) that

pays homage to the piano and annually hosts a piano

concert. This year’s two-day concert is scheduled for the beginning of October.

보았다. 어떤 사람들은 여전히 전통시장과 인기 있는 맛집거

리가 있는 화원을 시골지역이라고 생각하기도 한다. 1995년 까지 화원은 대구가 아니었지만 이제 지하철 1호선이 연장

되어 예전보다 접근이 쉬워졌다. 이 지역은 한국에서 최초로 피아노가 들어온 곳이라는 사실을 포함해서 자랑할 거리가

많다. 또한 ‘꽃’이라는 지명으로 알려진 화원에는 매년 피아 노 콘서트가 열리고 그 최초의 피아노를 기념하기 위한 화원 리조트라는 공원이 있는 곳이기도 하다. 올해에 열릴 이틀간 의 콘서트는 10월초에 열린다.

where you can see an aerial view of where the two rivers meet and a land mass that is shaped like the North and South American continents.

Explore Korea's Silla Dynasty A Day Trip to Gyeongju

Gyeongju is touted by the guide books as the third best place to visit in Korea for its resplendent natural beauty and UNESCO listed world heritage cultural sites. It is often called ‘the museum without walls’ for the 23 symmetrical tumuli (burial mounds) from the Silla Dynasty (57 BC to 935AD) that dot the centre of town. What makes it a great day trip from Daegu is the fact that it is a short 50 minute bus ride away and cheap, with a return journey costing just 9,800won. Considering these facts it seemed like a place I should explore during my time in Korea. 경주는 찬란한 자연의 아름다움과 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등

The Gyeongju bus terminal is centrally located and conveniently next to the Tourist Information Booth where we grabbed a town map. It was drizzling, so we decided to hail a cab (4,700) to the furthest sight The National Museum - and walk the 2km back. Many guidebooks recommended renting a bike for the day and I might have considered that option if the weather was nicer.

I was pleasantly surprised by the National Museum. Not only was the entrance free, but more importantly, all the signage was in both Korean and English. The main collection, which is sizable but not overwhelming, explores the history of the Silla Dynasty. Inside you can learn about the tombs, discover how they were built, and see up to 4,500 cultural artifacts that have been discovered from the excavations around the area. The dazzling displays include treasure troves of gold and jade jewelry, weaponry, pottery, and other ceremonial items. The grounds of the museum include some larger Buddhist artifacts ,including the Sacred Bell of King Seongdeok, which is considered one of the largest and most beautifully resonant bells ever made in Asia. 국립박물관에 대해서는 놀라움을 금치 못했다. 입장료가 무료

의 문화적 유물을 볼 수 있었다. 휘황찬란한 전시품에는 금과 옥

으로 된 발굴물, 무기류, 도자기류, 기타 제사 도구 등이 포함되어 있었다. 야외에는 거대한 불교 물품들이 있었는데 아시아에서 만

들어진 것 중 가장 크고 아름다운 소리를 낸다는 성덕대왕신종도 있었다.

From there, we took a short walk to the Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond on Wonhwa-ro. We peered in through the gates and took a few pictures, but in the end choose to bypass this sight. My recommendation would be to venture here after dark when it is elegantly lit up with spot lights. It looked magical when we went by several hours later.

Cross over Cheomseong-ro and behind the parking lot of busses is the main entrance to Daereungwon Tomb Complex. In this tranquil setting, with lilting Korean music, you get an up close look at the burial mounds and even the chance to go inside one.

박물관에서부터 잠시 걸어 동궁과 월지로 갔다. 입구에서 안을

했다. 필자의 추천은 어두워진 후에 이 곳에 가보라는 것이다. 그 때쯤이면 조명이 켜져서 건물이 우아하게 빛나고 있을 것이다. 몇 시간 후 이 곳을 지나 갈 때엔 정말 마법처럼 아름다웠다.

A short stroll along through the rape flower area and we spotted our first tombs protruding into the sky. Nearby was the unusual looking astronomical observatory of Cheomseongdae (meaning ‘star-gazing tower’ in Korean). Listed as the oldest surviving observatory in the world, it dates to the 7th century. Intriguingly it has 12 rows of stones below and 12 above its featured window and is apparently comprised of 365 stones. 유채꽃밭을 가로질러 잠시 산책을 하고 하늘 향해 솟은 첫번째 고분들을 보았다. 그 근처에는 특이하게 생긴 첨성대(별을 보는 탑)라는 천문관측소가 있었다. 세계에서 현존하는 관측소 중 가

We took the back exit and headed left on Taejong-ro to Poseok-ro, which is at the next intersection. Here you will find an upmarket row of shops and restaurants interspersed with dilapidated buildings. I found this the perfect street to pause for some lunch, a coffee and a general break from all that history. There were two modern looking Korean restaurants including Awesome, which looked like its namesake. Also along the street was a quirky, knick knack shop of locally crafted goods, where I picked up a few souvenirs. We choose to eat at the Nordic Modern Kitchen which served a small selection of open topped sandwiches and an intriguing salad, along with some draft beer and juices.

Feeling refreshed, we bused it to Bulguksa Temple. (Bus10 and 700) Warning, this is a good 45 minute journey out of town, but I enjoyed the ride just as much as the temple complex. This UNESCO World Heritage asset is set in beautiful grounds and had some impressive original elements including the opposing Dabotap and Seokgatap Pagodas in the interior, which are from around 750AD. Disappointingly, the wooden structures were burnt down, like most Korean temples, during the Japanese invasion, so most of what stands was built in 1973.

By this time, dusk was settling in, so we headed back to the Express Bus Terminal on the number 10 bus (you get on at the same stop you were dropped off taking a different loop back) and caught the 7.30pm bus back to Daegu. 이 때쯤, 땅거미가 지기 시작했고 10번 버스를 타고 고속버스 터미널로 돌아갔다. (버스에서 내렸던 같은 버스 정류장으로

Gyeongju has a range of non-historic things to do and would be great for a long weekend too. The Bomun Tourist Complex, with a lake at its center, includes a luxury water park and amusement area. Additionally, nearby Mount Namsan provides great hiking trails where you can come across hundreds of stone Buddha statues and carvings along with royal tombs and pagodas from the Silla Kingdom. The Daegu International Fashion Culture Market is part of ‘The Project to Activate K-Fashion Total Business’ by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. It is the first event which combines a fashion culture festival with the B2B2C consumption market. This festival is different from previous exhibitions, which focused on fashion experts and companies. There will be two main programs; B2B Programs for fashion and textile buyers from Korea and foreign countries, people who are related to the industries, and B2C Programs for those who are interested in fashion. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Things to remember while shopping

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
