famous theaters because of its depiction of the true love and life of young and poor artists in the 19th century. The opera is directed by Guy Montavon, who is the General Manager of the Theater Erfurt in Germany. This marks the first time La Bohème will be performed at the Festival. This makes it all the more meaningful, because Gwangju City Opera, with more than 30 years of history, will participate in the production, thus continuing our “moonlight alliance” through cultural exchanges. There is a perfect cast awaiting visitors. Soprano Lee Yunkyeong and Ma Hyesun, the country’s most proud singers, will play Mimi. Tenor Jeong Hoyoon, an exclusive tenor of the Wiener Staatsoper, received praise for depicting a perfect “Rodolfo”. In addition, Tenor Kang Dongmyeong, with an outstandingly beautiful voice, and other singers with great talent, will also join the cast.

Meet Fidelio, which is the only opera composed by Beethoven, the musical saint. Fidelio is a story of Leonora, who disguised herself as a man and snuck into a prison to save her husband Fernando, who was incarcerated without justifiable reason. The opera is based on the story of a noble woman that saved her husband’s life during the French revolution. Beethoven hated “Buffa Opera,” opera that was rather cheerful and light-hearted. He was inspired by the serious humanism and the fight against the repression described in the original story. He perfected the opera by modifying it for ten years after the initial performance. Beethoven composed four preludes for this opera and made the strenuous effort through rewriting different arias more than ten times. As a result, Fidelio features his greatest music and heroic status as the master of symphony music. Fidelio is the original production of the Theater Bonn, which is the best in its city, the birthplace of Beethoven and attracts all the more attention because the theater specializes in the production and performance of this piece.

Orfeo ed Euridice, the most well-known piece of Gluck, the opera reformer, will be performed at this year’s Festival. From the Italian baroque opera in the 18th century that was rather exaggerated and was too focused on singing, Orfeo ed Euridice went in a new direction, which combined orchestra music and stories to form the “beginning of modernism.” It is based on the story of Orfeo, who appears in Greek mythology, and unlike in the original story where both protagonists are faced with tragic death, the story ends with the goddess of love letting them live happily ever after. The piece is loved not only because of the story we know, but also because of the beautiful music. However, the original production of Landestheater Linz of Austria is all the more special because it will not only please our ‘ears’, but also ‘eyes’. The audience will appreciate the beautiful dance by twenty of the world’s best dancers of Landestheater Linz, from the beginning till the end of the opera. This is an opportunity where you can be amazed by the charm of “ballet opera,” which is rarely seen in Korea.

The Korea National Opera that mesmerizes audiences through quality performances every year, will join Daegu International Opera Festival with their first opera of the season, Tosca. Tosca is the most representative piece of Puccini, a composer with genius talent. It is considered the most representative piece of verismo opera, through building intensive structures of various stories, including love, misunderstanding, and betrayal that drove the three protagonists to death within just one night. Compared with the sweet and lyrical music of his previous work, La Bohème, Tosca features richer orchestra music and dramatic melody. In addition, the famous arias like “E Lucevan le Estelle (The Stars are Shining),” “Vissi d’arte, Vissi Diamore (I Lived for Art, I Lived for Love),” and “Recondita Armonia (Concealed Harmony),” made Tosca the most popular opera of this age. The opera is loved as the most frequent repertoire in major opera theaters. It will be a special performance, featuring the world’s best opera singers like Tenor Alfred Kim with lyrical and charismatic expressions, and Baritone Ko Senghyoun with an explosive voice and expressions.

The opera Carmen, a French opera masterpiece and the opera most loved by Korean people, will close the 14th Opera Festival in a splendid way. Carmen, which is full of famous opera songs like “Votre Toast (I'd like to propose a toast to you - Toreador’s song),” “La Fleur Que Vous M'avez Jetee (The flower that you tossed to me – flower song),” and “L'amour Est Un Oiseau Rebelle (Love is a rebellious bird – Habanera),” was not very popular in the beginning because of its reality and cruel murder scene. However, thanks to the lethal charm of Carmen who leads her lover to destruction, and the seductive and lyrical melody, it has become the greatest work of all in the history of opera. The opera will be played in collaboration with Seongnam Culture Foundation, and the fact that it will be prepared by Chung Kapgyun, a famous director, Sung Shiyeon that has built global reputation with her charismatic conducting style, and Gyeonggyi Philharmonic Orchestra heightens the level of expectation. In particular, the top-notch opera singers, including mezzo-sopranos Rinat Shaham and Yang Gyehwa, who have received positive reviews for their performances of Carmen at home and abroad, tenor Han Yunseok, with splendid voice and fierce acting, Tenor Park Sinhae, who has built a reputation in the region, Baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, who won the Grand Prix in the Tchaikovsky Competition, and Baritone Oh Seungyong, who is called “the little giant of the east,” will deliver fantastic harmonies.

Pent 76 Daegu's Upscale Wine & Lounge Bar

• Written and photographed by Lindsay Mickles Translated by Yujeong Lee

On July 23rd, The Daegu Compass had the pleasure of hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at Pent 76, a new upscale restaurant and bar close to downtown Daegu. Volunteers and staff gathered together to network, enjoy a few beers, and try some tasty food. Pent 76 was a great spot for our event.

Pent 76 opened its doors on April 1st and is located at 중구 북성로76, Daegu 41919, about a 10min walk from the Jungangno Station. It was not difficult to find, though it is not in the popular bar/food area of downtown. It is easy to tell that the owners spent a lot of time and effort to cater to an upscale clientele. The interior is impeccably designed and the food and alcohol offerings seek to be simple, but elegant.

16

Pent 76

The menu is not extensive, but they offer something to suit every palate. Visitors can chose from 3 different cuts of steak, 4 salad options, 3 pizzas, 5 pastas, and a variety of side menus (designed to share) like fried chicken, fruit plates, and cheese platters. They also have a sizeable drink menu and a substantial bar, full of high quality bottles.

While at the event, we were able to sample 4 dishes: Son Chef’s Fried Chicken (20k), Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (16k), Spaghetti Gamberoni (16k), and a Gorgonzola Pizza (15k). Everyone at my table loved the Son Chef’s Fried Chicken(aka Chicken Fried) - it was perfectly cooked and was paired with some great dipping sauces. The Spaghetti Gamberoni was our second favorite and, although it was a bit overcooked, the sauce was light, flavorful, and not too-heavy for summer. Although it is not a new dish in Korea, the Gorgonzola Pizza was perfectly cooked, the crust was light (not too thin), and the chef added a nice bit of shaved almonds. The Spaghetti Alla Carbonara was pretty good. I am a very tough critic of carbonara, having lived in Italy for several years and having an Italian mother, but they did a decent job. The flavors weren’t perfect, but it was a solid dish.

All in all, the food had a lot of promise, especially for a new restaurant in Daegu! The fried chicken was definitely something special and I would order the Gamberoni again in a heartbeat. Many new restaurants in Daegu are cookie-cutter versions of other restaurants. Pent 76 is aiming for something different, and I sincerely believe they can achieve it.

18

Pent 76

Would I return to Pent 76? Absolutely. I think it would be a perfect place to dress up a bit, have some nice cocktails, and share a few dishes while socializing. The Daegu Compass Staff and Volunteers had a wonderful evening at Pent 76 and we were very glad to find a nice place to host this event.

Delizzert Delicious + Dessert

• Written by Rikus Matt Wessels Photos by Lee GiHoon Translated by Yujeong Lee

There is some great news for ‘the sweet-tooth population’ of Daegu! A European style dessert café is hidden away downtown… Delizzert is the new ‘sugar hotspot’ in Daegu. Located just 5 minutes away from Samdeok Fire Station, Delizzert offers an easy escape from the sweltering Daegu summer. With a minimalist design and warm lighting, the café has a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

The charismatic smile of the owner, Lee GiHoon (More commonly referred to as LK), adds to the pleasurable mood. After graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering, LK took a job with a Korean engineering company. He knew that he loved science, but whilst working as a chemical engineer he realized that he was more interested in the science of the culinary world. He remembered how much he enjoyed working part-time in a restaurant kitchen as a student. Measuring flavors, and deciphering ratios, to get the perfect taste. He decided to le ave the engineering firm, and he contacted a Hong-Kong based friend that he met in Australia a couple of years prior. His friend, a Pastry Chef, owns a dessert café in Hong Kong, and he agreed to take LK on as an apprentice.

LK spent some time visiting cafes in Hong Kong, London, and the Paddington district of Sydney. Whilst there he fell in love with the atmosphere of European style cafes, where people can relax and enjoy coffee and desserts in a peaceful space. After he returned to Daegu he worked as a waiter at his friend’s restaurant, HiThai. He then found a spot that he thought would be worthy of his first café. He didn’t want his café on a busy street, even though it would mean less foot traffic. He wanted the atmosphere to be flawless. -continued on p22DAEGU COMPASS SEPTEMBER 2016

The menu offers a variety of desserts, from their signature dessert, the Chocolate Lava Cake, to Lemon Roll crepes and Pana Cotta.

The lava cake, has been described by friends as ‘foodgasmic’. The molten lava cake is baked to perfection to give the customer the ultimate chocolate experience. The Tiramisu is a perfect ‘pick me up’ on a rainy day. They make a limited amount per day, as LK believes in ‘Quality over Quantity’; and it sells out fast - so be sure to make it to the café in time to have an opportunity to surprise your taste buds. The Mont Blanc is a decadent dessert with a crispy cookie crumble and vanilla ice cream base, topped with Chestnut paste and pieces of baked meringue. It resembles a snow capped mountain, hence the name. The Mont Blanc and Strawberry Pana Cotta can be altered for those with a wheat allergy or gluten-intolerance.

The vanilla latte also has a unique spin. LK and his staff didn’t want to use store bought vanilla syrup, so they decided to make their own. Vanilla beans are ground, mixed with milk, and then frozen into cubes. The iced vanilla cubes are served with iced espresso cubes in a tall glass, and then topped with warm frothy milk.

LK and his two staff members take turns to ‘engineer’ a perfect dessert for each season and for special events. They decided on a Saint Honoré cake, with a Delizzert-spin, for summer: a tart base with choux cream, accompanied by some dill and chervil, to add to the summer feel. Delizzert is now also hosting bring your own (BYO) wine nights. After 8pm on Saturdays customers can bring a nice bottle of wine to the café. Each customer

orders one dessert, and pays ₩ 3000 corkage. LK wants to spread the idea of BYO culture in Korea, and he also hopes that this event could serve as a space for cultural exchange with more foreign customers.

How To Save A Life Developing the Rescue Culture in Korea

• Written and photographed by Shannon Milojkovic Translated by Yujeong Lee

Thank you to those who took time to glimpse at part one

From those who’ve done it: 유기견 입양을 해 본 이야기

of this piece. Last month dealt with the gloomy reality of

mass abandonment and not enough interest in someone’s

second-hand pet or nobody’sfirst-hand stray. But now, a change for the better: here I present to you some feel-good true life stories to warm your heart and get you peering through adoption profiles to choose your own fur-child.

Successful adoption stories come by the hundreds. As if saving a little life wasn’t enough, adoption also means you

get to feel heroic, and by all means, you should. Rescue culture awards its followers with the pride of owning or

helping a rescued animal, which helps one get through the

initial bumps of getting to know a perhaps never-beforeloved animal.

Lauren Skinner found her dog, Watson, through Animal Rescue Network Korea and says “It was a really easy process and I’d do it again!” She is also

currently fostering an older cocker spaniel mix who

she says has morphed from a timid creature to a

confident and lovable dog. Thanks to Lauren, both these animals have been given a chance at life, despite some of the animosity from locals she has faced because of it.

Yvonne Ky came across her dog by accident in a community Facebook group. She was abandoned

and was about to be moved to a shelter. Yvonnestates “…my dog was on “death row” and it was a desperate

situation”..For Yvonne, there was no adoption fee, and

her vet, out of gratitude for the rescue, gave massive

discounts including the donation of her heartworm medication, which usually costs around 1,000 000 won. Yvonne and her dog flew back to the states for a 6 month break, and recently returned to Korea. Each

way, Misha (the lucky dog) was able to travel in cabin due to her size.

and walk out with the animal. The lady who usually works there knows me by now and understands what I do…. At least for me, it’s a relatively easy process.”

Carrie also acts as an escortfor pets travelling back to the States. Every time she plans on heading home for a visit, she advertises and very often, her offer is

snatched up by people desperately looking for ways to send animals home. She is currently planning the move of her own dog, butunfortunately, his

particulardestination does require a hefty fee. Carrie

states “…bringing him to South Africa may cost anywhere from 2.0 to 4.0 million won. It’s a difficult

country to bring animals to!”I can second that. In my previous year in Korea I found myself in the position of a stray kittenwho has since become family. My

own quotation for said cat from Pawsome Pet Travel totaled at about 950 000 won. However, others who

have sent pets to SA independently have confirmed

this price for a cat is pretty much on the mark. Please note that South Africa is particularly expensive and

more difficult since the country only accepts pets

Pawsome Pet Travel

Should Pets Travel? There is a common contestable argument amongst

foreigners: it is cruel for pets to live in our tiny apartments, and the travel overseas would be too stressful for them. This argument is based on our human perception (as BAPS

suggests, shindogs.org) and quite honestly ridiculous if you consider the alternatives (as I suggest). An apartment is

likely to be the shelter dogs’ biggest kennel he’ll ever have; he will sleep, eat his organic, grain-free pellets out his own bowl, greet you when come home, and have nice long

naps in a real bed. This is nothing like the day in the life of a shelter dog. Please understand that shelters, pounds or

potential pets will stay in the shelters. Most of the adopted out of Korea, as do thousands of other animals. This will

not be as stressful for them as it will be for you. Prepare your animals using his or her own crate, and you will both arrive home in one piece. It’s worth it, probably even more

so from your pet’s perspective. I strongly suggest you go to BAPS’s website, shindogs.org, to read further. It is highly

comprehensive and the content is written well, and backed by thorough research and experience.

It Takes a Village NET raises funds for African Orphanage

One of the painfully consistent tragedies in this world of ours is that children wake up to find themselves without parents. Often, the systems in place to provide care to these children are imperfect and overburdened. However, a novel new approach is being put into practice outside of Durban, South Africa.

LIV Village is providing homes for orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa, many of whom have lost parents to HIV/AIDS, by following a village model to foster care. As LIV explains on their website, “We place these children into a family

environment with a trained foster mother to love them, a school to educate them, and where all their needs are met.” Children are raised in an environment that is based on village living. As opposed to rotating children through a system of orphanages and temporary foster care, LIV provides long term foster care with a family and within a community. According to the LIV Village mission statement, “If these children are equipped with essential moral values and life skills, they will grow up to be a generation that will influence positive change within South Africa, Africa and the world.”

There is currently one village operating near Durban, SA that currently cares for 154 children. The village is 494 acres and contains ninety-six three-bedroom homes. The village gives children access to education, church services, health care, a choir, drama programs, and more. LIV Business also provides job training and opportunities, not just within the village but to the surrounding rural areas, with the ultimate goal of self-sustainability. The hope is that this model of foster care will spread throughout Africa, and perhaps be adopted in other parts of the world. -continued on p32-

While teaching at the Cheongju National University of Education (CNUE) Katelyn Jones developed an elective course titled Global Education Trends: Worldwide Education Crisis. “I wanted to create a course that educated my students (elementary education majors) on education crisis around the world,” says Jones. Jones and her students’ goal is to raise $30,000 by January 2017. The money would go towards building and furnishing a self-sustaining, eco-friendly house for six orphans, a foster mother, and her two biological children.

Intercultural Understanding A Peek Inside the Drinking Culture in Korea • Written by Julita Ramsunder Photos by Lindsay Mickles www.flickr.com:photos:bitslice:2769186543, www.flickr.com:photos:bulknews:5998108392, www.flickr.com:photos:eekim:5142312130, www.flickr.com:photos:evenkolder:15018369634, www.flickr.com:photos:rebekahihammond:5819348610 Translated by Yujeong Lee

In this article and the ones that follow I hope to pop the lid on some of the myths of Korean culture and to provide greater insight into our current understanding of it. This obviously requires the perspective of a Korean – someone who truly understands all of the nuances of the culture that we as foreigners often miss. And so I would like to introduce Jonathan. He is Korean but has spent a number of years living in America and so has a unique viewpoint to give on the differences and similarities between Korean and Western culture. And so armed with large cups of coffee we will be discussing social relationships and practices. These are often the most difficult to understand as foreigners living in a new country with a language barrier. We both hope that these articles will allow foreigners to become more conscious travelers in Korea and to serve as a reminder that we are the new faces among old ones.

Korea has become infamous for its high rate of drinking, especially amongst the younger generations. Having lived in Korea for 5 months now, I have quickly learnt that grabbing a few - or many - bottles of soju with dinner is the norm here. It is easy as foreigners to misunderstand the reason behind this drinking culture. Most of us associate drinking with a night out on the town, or more bluntly, we drink to party. I, personally, have translated this meaning to the Korean context. In speaking to Jonathan, however, it became very clear that my Western standard was far off the mark. Understanding the Korean drinking culture requires a closer look at the broader social culture here.

First, as foreigners living in Korea we should all be aware that in social interactions – whether with friends or your boss - you never speak directly to a problem but rather you speak around it. And most times when wanting to give help it requires persistence as Koreans never want to place a burden on or inconvenience you in any way. And just as often we find that Koreans will try to avoid at all costs either speaking negatively about a person or hurting them in any way. This in turn speaks to a broader social construct where many Koreans often suppress their “negative” emotions because they are so concerned about offending or hurting someone else. Beyond the deeply caring nature of Koreans this social practice also stems from the fact that there exists a very close social network among them, in other words a country “where everyone knows everyone else”. So where you have this type -continued on p40-

of network, coupled with a huge population of people living on a small piece of land, it becomes exceedingly important to prevent conflicts which can then become common knowledge and easily affect your reputation.

And so we come full circle back to the reason behind the drinking culture in Korea. And what we find is that, essentially, drinking allows Koreans to express their emotions more openly and honestly without as much fear of offending others. And while drinking to party is certainly something that happens here it is certainly not the norm. As foreigners we should be well aware that most drinking occurs at dinner with friends or work associates and in this context drinking serves a very different purpose to partying: it allows individuals to bond and to be honest about their emotions. Most of us are well aware of the courage that soon follows a few kickbacks but I think that we often take it for granted that Western culture and society is far more open to emotional expression. So the next time you question the drinking culture or even partake in it, it is important to remember the cultural significance this holds for Koreans. A culture very far placed from our own.

Living in South Korea 9 Apps to Make Your Life a Little Easier

Before moving to South Korea, you likely searched what to pack in your suitcase. Passport? Check. Travel adapter? Check. Deodorant? Double check. But how about what to pack in your phone? Here are nine helpful apps that I use on a regular basis. Whether you live here or are just passing through, I hope this list comes in handy!

For communicating

1. Google Translate From using it in the classroom to translate complex vocabulary words to communicating with shopkeepers at traditional markets, this app has been a life saver. It even lets you take a picture of text (a menu or sign, for example) and translates it into English. A word of caution: Translations are not always entirely accurate or sometimes too literal. For example, I recently tried to translate “pet peeve” but the app translated the two words separately so that the Korean read something like “pets frustrating.” Also be aware that Korean, like English, has many words that have several different meanings. 1.

2. Kakao Talk Everybody in South Korea uses this messaging app to text, video chat and make phone calls. Also, it has the cutest emojis! I made my family members back home download it, too. 2.

3. OTO Free I use this app to make long-distance phone calls to the U.S. The calls are incredibly clear! While international calls are free, they do use your local minutes, so check with your provider to see how many you have before going nuts with calls to home. 3.

For getting around

4. Subway (Jihachul)

This app is a must for navigating Korea’s subway systems. It provides info on the fastest routes, timetables, fares and more. 4.

5. m.businfo.go.kr This is not an app, but it is a useful Englishsite for riding the city bus in Daegu. I highly recommend bookmarking it on your mobile device as the bus system is not as English friendly as the subway system. -continued on p44-

6. Yogiyo Koreans have got food delivery down to a fine art and this app is proof of that. If you can read Hangul (the Korean alphabet), you can use this app to order pizza, chicken, sushi and more! Check out my blog for step-by-step instructions: https://thenakedforeigner. com/2015/08/27/how-to-order-food-using-the-yogiyoapp/ 6.

food-using-the-yogiyo-app/

7. McDelivery Korea

Yes, McDonald’s delivers in South Korea! The app is in English and it’s super easy to use. It’s just the ticket when you need to spend a Sunday recovering from your soju hangover — close the blinds, pull up Netflix on your laptop and eat cheeseburgers in bed. Not that I’ve ever spent a Sunday like that… 7.

For fun

8. Charades! I love using this app in the classroom. Some of the decks are too challenging for beginners, but you can make custom decks by plugging in your own words. It’s a fun way to review vocabulary words. I also had a blast playing the Harry Potter deck with my family while we waited in line for over an hour to ride Harry Potter and The Escape from Gringotts at Universal. Other people in line even got into it! Looking back, I think it was even more memorable than the ride itself.

44

Living in South Korea

9 8. Charades!

Harry Potter and The Escape from Gringotts

9. Overdrive Do you have a library card from your hometown library? Check out their website. Chances are you can borrow titles from their digital collection using Overdrive. I love this app because I like to read, but I also have student loans, ya know? Of course I love the feeling of a book in my hand as much as the next person, but it’s hard to travel light with a pile of paperbacks. This app has come in handy on so many flights and long train rides. It’s countless hours of entertainment for free! What’s not to love? 9. Overdrive

One more tip If you ever find yourself in a jam in South Korea, call the 1330 travel hotline for English assistance. I’ve used it for everything from finding out how to buy baseball tickets to getting the hours for the Apsan cable car.

The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Come on down to HamiMami's and experience a bit of home. Open & Close: 08:00-21:00 / Break time for weekdays: 15:00-17:00 / Closed on Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Add: 87, Samjeong-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

Gajok

Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul

Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road

Kyungpook Uni. Area

Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

Bongsan Cultural Street

77, Bongsanmunhwa-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.
