RESIDENT SUBMITTED

December THOUGHTS BY MARIANN KAYSER The month of December can be one of the happiest months of the year and at the same time be the most stressful. Some people are so busy they barely get through all the holiday celebrations, family get-togethers and simultaneous year end work demands. Others find the month of December depressing and challenging. But what do we really know about the origins of the month of December? When the ancient Romans established their first calendar, December marked the end of the year and the coming of winter. The word December is formed from the Latin root decem- which means “ten,” but December is our twelfth month. Doesn’t make sense, does it. Well, it was originally the tenth month of the year in the calendar of Romulus c. 750 BC, which began in March. During that period, the winter days following December were not included as part of any month because their calendar

was based on their planting and harvesting schedules. They didn’t even track winter. (Hey, us northerners can relate.) Later, the months of January and February were added to sync their calendar days with the lunar year. Although December retained its name, it’s now the twelfth and final month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Its length is now 31 days, versus the original 30 days. When you think about it, things make sense now. You know how every year you’re thinking the year just seemed to fly by and it felt shorter than twelve months. Well, now we know why. If December were the tenth month, we would still have two more months to finish out the year and get things accomplished. Maybe January and February should have come after December instead of at the beginning of the new year. Just a thought. There’s another thing that makes sense to me now. Stores go from being decorated and selling

Christmas décor in December and then they start decorating and selling décor for St. Patrick’s Day. Now we know why. Stores must be working off the Roman calendar when the new year started in March and ended in December. January and February are lost to them and perhaps that is the reason for the big discount sales in those months. What other things did I learn about December? Well, one of the December flowers is the Narcissus (Daffodil). I initially read this so fast that I thought it said Narcissist. Which would make sense because December does seem to have an unreasonably high sense of its own importance, and the month does seek lots of attention and wants people to admire it. All kidding aside, December is a beautiful month. It highlights all the feelings of the holidays: joy, weariness, love, faith, family, nostalgia, and most of all hope. Hope that the New Year will bring peace and happiness to all.

Ornaments, Memories, and Magic: INSIDE THE QUAYS' FESTIVE HOLIDAY HOME BY DOREEN SARGENTE Meet Sharon and AJ Quay, a couple that truly embodies the spirit of Christmas—one ornament, one tree, and one cherished memory at a time. When they moved from Pennsylvania six years ago, they brought two of their three beloved trees along. The third tree was swapped for a new, slimmer version that became their “Coastal Tree.” Dressed in vibrant aqua and teal, this tree honors the sea life they adore, bringing a slice of coastal charm to their home. But the Quays’ tree collection doesn’t stop there. Their love for dogs shines through with a dedicated dog-themed tree. Having raised five Seeing Eye puppies, Sharon and AJ had to upgrade this tree to hold even more ornaments. “A friend just gave me one this week!” Sharon laughs, showing just how their passion for dogs influences their holiday décor. Their pride for Penn State University runs deep, too. Both AJ and their son, Brad, are alumni, and this love is evident in their special Penn State tree, which used to be the Dog Tree. It’s a vibrant display of school spirit and family ties, adorned with ornaments showcasing their loyalty to the Nittany Lions. In addition to these festive creations, Sharon has a tree filled with vintage decorations from her parents and grandparents. After the passing of her mom, the collection grew even more meaningful, with a sleigh and reindeer that are a bit of a running joke in the family—“The deer keep falling over!” Sharon chuckles, capturing the humorous side of holiday decorating. Then there’s the sentimental tree, decorated with ornaments that each tell a

8

unique story—those crafted by Brad and Amy, gifts from students, and keepsakes tied to special memories. Each decoration brings back cherished moments, weaving a tapestry of love throughout their home. Two years ago, Sharon’s dream of having a white tree came to life. It now takes center stage in the dining room’s picture window, decorated in calming blue tones and left up until the end of April. “We switch out the decorations for each month—hearts for February, shamrocks for March, and Easter eggs for April!” she beams, showcasing her flair for seasonal fun. While Sharon may not have a silver tree yet, she’s not ruling it out! Their collection of nativity sets also reflects their heartwarming traditions. Although they downsized from five to three, they cherish their dog nativity, a deer nativity from their cabin in the Poconos, and a special set purchased at a yard sale from an elderly couple who were downsizing. "It was their first set when they were married", says Sharon. "I just had to give it a home." Sharon and AJ have two children: Brad, who lives in the hustle and bustle of New York City with his wife, Lindsay, and their adorable granddaughter, Maddie; and Amy, who calls Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, home with her two cats and a school facility dog, and Sharon and AJ share their home with Abbi, their 5 year old yellow lab. With so much family spread out, the Quays make it a point to celebrate together, especially during the holidays. With each tree, ornament, and decoration, the Quay family continues to build a Christmas legacy filled with laughter, love, and treasured memories. Their home isn’t just a place; it’s a joyful celebration of family, tradition, and the magic of the holiday season.

A Dazzling Tradition: How Sal & Daihana Garcia

Create Holiday Magic

BY DOREEN SARGENTE There’s something magical about Christmas lights that transcends age and time. For children, the colorful, twinkling lights create a sense of wonder, as if each glowing bulb holds a tiny piece of holiday joy just for them. The simple act of watching lights dance across rooftops and trees can stir feelings of excitement and awe, making the season feel truly special. But it’s not just children who fall under their spell. For the young at heart, Christmas lights evoke nostalgia, reminding us of the carefree days of our youth when the world seemed a little brighter and full of promise. Now picture this: twinkling lights dancing across rooftops, a symphony of colors painting the dark night sky. It's truly a magical wonderland, right here in Brunswick Forest. For Sal and Diana Garcia, Christmas isn't just a holiday-it's a full-blown production. Think Clark Griswold's wildest dreamsonly better. Their house isn't just lit up; it's practically visible from space! If the Griswolds lived here, even Clark would need sunglasses just to plug in the lights!

PHOTO BY G. FRANK HART 14

These two light-loving legends have been dazzling folks with their amazing Christmas light displays for years. After 40 years on Long Island, Sal and Daihana have brought their passion for holiday spirit to a whole new level. What began as a family tradition for Sal, decorating his mother’s home in Bayshore

On any given day, you’ll find a range of with what he describes as a "somewhat normal" display, has transformed into an extraordinary showcase over the years. Sal's journey into the world of stunning and creative Christmas light displays took an unexpected turn during a chance meeting in Port Jefferson. There, he met a tech-savvy young man who had mastered coordinating the computers and lights but needed an electrician to handle the wiring and setup. Sal was the perfect fit. What started as a favor quickly became a project he couldn’t let go of, one that allowed him to combine his electrical expertise with his love for the holiday season. Soon, three others joined the team, each bringing their own unique talents, and together they created breathtaking, one-of-a-kind displays. While living on Long Island, the Garcia's light shows not only captivated their community but also raised significant funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—bringing in as much as $20,000 through boxes set up near their home and the homes of the other enthusiasts.

Now, Sal and Daihana’s own displays, while not as large as some of their earlier projects, still light up their Villamar neighborhood in a way that made me stop in my tracks when I first saw it last year, and I'm pretty sure it will do the same for you. In fact, Sal estimates that their current setup is about half the size of what it used to be, but it’s still nothing short of impressive. Sandbags, bucket trucks, and other heavy-duty tools are part of the setup, hinting at just how serious the couple is about putting on a show. For the Garcias, these aren’t just decorations—they’re a labor of love. The creative force behind these stunning designs is Daihana, the "design guru" of the operation. Her keen eye ensures that everything flows perfectly, with no awkward gaps or elements that feel out of place. In her mind, the display is like a puzzle, and it’s her job to make sure every piece fits just right. She balances the colors, the shapes, and the

lights so that each part of the display complements the others rather than competing for attention. Of course, pulling off such elaborate designs takes a lot of work and planning. It’s not something that happens overnight. In fact, the Garcias start preparing for the next holiday season as early as February. If they want to take advantage of discounts on materials, they need to place their orders no later than February 28. That’s just one example of the level of foresight and organization required to keep their

displays running smoothly. When asked about the most challenging aspect of the displays, Sal quickly points to setting up the computers. "Coordinating lights with music and motion requires significant technical expertise," he explains. In his Port Jefferson setup, Sal managed an impressive sixteen computers, and at their current home, they use eight to ensure everything operates in perfect harmony. It's a leap from his early days of simply stringing lights along a roofline and plugging them into a single outlet."

For anyone thinking about taking on a similar venture, Sal has some practical advice. “Start small, buy from the right people, and order your supplies the year before,” he says. And there’s one nonnegotiable: LED lights. Sal emphasizes that LEDs are far more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. In fact, I was surprised to learn his entire display only adds about $100 to his electric bill during the holiday season—a testament to the cost savings that come with choosing the right materials. While creating these dazzling displays

© Best Version Media might sound like a full-time job, Sal and Daihana make time for their own hobbies and relaxation. Daihana enjoys playing Mahjong and taking long walks, a peaceful counterbalance to the hectic nature of setting up Christmas lights. Sal, on the other hand, spends a lot of time tending to their beautiful garden, another way for him to channel his creativity and enjoy the beauty of nature. And, of course, when he’s not working on his garden, he’s already thinking about the next year’s light show, dreaming up new ideas and ways to make it even better.

ENJOY all the fun and none of the chores

Sal and Daihana Garcia are more than just a couple who love Christmas—they are community builders. Their dedication, creativity, and generosity have made their light displays a beacon of holiday cheer. Whether it's their meticulously designed mega tree, their whimsical toy soldiers, or the joy of seeing families gather around to admire their work, the Garcias have shown that their passion for lights goes far beyond decoration. No matter our age or worries, these dazzling displays have a way of making us forget our troubles, if only for a little while. The glow of a well-lit house, the shimmer of a perfectly arranged light show—it all takes us back to a simpler time. It’s a reminder that, amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, the enchantment of Christmas lights can bring joy, peace, and a momentary escape from the everyday. So move over, Griswolds! The Garcia's are in town, and they mean business. Their house makes the Griswold display look like a nightlight. With more bulbs than an airport runway, it's clear they took 'go big or go home' to heart except they never went home, they just kept adding more lights! © 2024 Brightmore of Wilmington

FROM BRUNSWICK TO BURNSVILLE:

Bringing Hope to Hurricane Survivors BY CAROL BROCK In October of this year, Hurricane Helene unexpectedly devastated Western North Carolina. Many families and individuals were displaced. Even though no one is prepared for these types of events, catastrophes like this bring out the best in people. Much kindness has been shown and many connections have been made with people living in Brunswick Forest as a result of the effects of this hurricane. My daughter, Hannah, lives in Weaverville, NC, and was one of the “lucky” ones. It is sad when being without power, water, gas, and jobs for many days is considered lucky. Hannah works at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehab in Burnsville, NC, which is a skilled nursing facility in the area and staff there requested cards/letters of encouragement and stuffed animals to provide comfort to the approximate 90 residents who call the facility their home. Smoky Ridge had been without water for weeks and residents were struggling emotionally as well as physically. At one point, they expected to evacuate the residents out of the area but were able to keep that daily threat from happening. Many area families and individuals have lost their homes and everything they owned and, in some cases, lost family members. The residents of the nursing home didn’t lose their home, but they did lose much of the family and emotional support they had previously received. In some

cases, family members were unable to get to the nursing home or had to evacuate. Some residents did not know if family members had survived the hurricane. Then there are those residents who struggled to understand the changes around them and why their family members were not there. They were emotionally and physically isolated and confused. Thanks to the response from residents of Brunswick Forest, Bethel United Methodist Church in Bolivia, and the Carolina Voices community choir in Charlotte, we collected over 300 cards of encouragement and nine stuffed animals to share with the nursing home residents. With so many cards, my daughter was able to share the cards with another nursing home in the area. As a result of this card request, other relationships in Brunswick Forest have developed; connecting with the parents of my daughter’s co-worker, parents of others located in affected areas offering to help, the opportunity for my daughter to check on a neighbor’s home to assure them it was still standing, and so much more. While Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the nursing facilities in Western North Carolina, remember that there are seniors in nursing homes in the Leland area who may also be experiencing loneliness and not having anyone to visit them. A smiling face or a card is always welcome.

MEET MOOKIE

MEET SAMMY

Twelve years ago, my Mom adopted me from North Shore Animal League in New York, although she always tells me she got me from the "good boy store." I was named Mookie Wilson after my Dad's favorite player on the Mets. I love taking walks in Brunswick Forest because I get to meet up with so many of my friends (Leia, Lucy, and Fiona). I love greeting everyone at the front door with one of my many toys. My favorite pastime is cuddling up on my cozy blanket, next to Mom and Dad.

This is Sammy and his favorite piggy, which he carries around in his mouth just about all day at home. He even takes it to our bed when he goes to sleep at night! Sammy is an 8 year old Yorkie who we rescued from being left at a shelter by his former owner in May of 2022. Our home is Sammy’s third and he fills it with a ton of joy and laughter! Steve and I both hope we are making him as happy as he has made us, and that he will be with us for many years to come. We often ask ourselves, ”who rescued who?”

The Empty Chair

Whether it is your first Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas without your Loved One, or there have been many, one of the hardest things about the holidays is seeing their empty chair. During our grief journeys you may find that the grief changes and grows in different directions year to year. Our Beloved Dad died three days after Christmas. The first year after his death I was okay putting up all the usual decorations and making our house full of Christmas everything. The second year after he died, I could barely bring myself to look at anything that had to do with Christmas. I couldn’t bear to take out the decorations, let alone decorate or have a tree. One of our traditions growing up was we would listen to an old recording of the Festival of Lessons and Carols mass from King’s College Choir and decorate the tree. When I was in my own home I would start with listening to the mass and the Christmas story, and then watch The Nutcracker Ballet movie with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland. The second year after his death, the thought of listening to the album that started my decorating since childhood and watching my beloved Nutcracker had me in tears. I couldn’t fathom decorating anything without listening to the mass or watching the Nutcracker – so the house stayed without decorations. Of course, God had other plans and our daughter and her friends decided that the house needed to be decorated even if I couldn't do it. They stormed the house with love and laughter and got the job done. Because they had done the decorating and it wasn’t me with my usual routine, I was able to appreciate the decorations, and even enjoy the whole process. They gave me Christmas back – but in a new way that did not leave me in sad tears. Although I will admit that I had happy tears when I thanked them for all their hard work and what they had done for us – it meant so very, very much. What I learned from the whole experience that year is that, when we are grieving so deeply, it is important to step back from your usual traditions and plans. Figure out which of the traditions is causing the most pain for you to do without your Loved One or just too painful to do at all. Allow yourself the grace to say “not this year”. You can either skip it altogether or maybe figure out a different way to get something done that can bring you joy and allow you to celebrate the holidays with less extra pain. 24

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGE For each holiday, make a list of all the usual traditions you have in your family, or just you. For each of these items, I want you to assign a number – 10 being very painful right now, and 1 being very little pain. Go through each of these items and honestly judge what the number is that you should assign for each activity.

© Best Version Media Then make a list of the activities that cause between 1-5 pain, and the 6-10 that cause more pain. For each of the things that cause the most pain (5-10), ask yourself why you need to do that activity this year or in this particular way. If you can skip it, then great! If you can’t because of other family members, or children who are counting on it, then I want you to brainstorm other ways you can get things done – like my daughter’s friends decorating my house for Christmas.

OTHER POSSIBLE SUBSTITUTIONS Instead of having your Thanksgiving dinner at home and staring at Grandpa’s chair, go out for your holiday meal. Maybe decide to skip the traditional dinner altogether because it hurts so much and find a pizza and a movie theater that are open. (FYI.. almost everything closes for Thanksgiving, so this is more doable for Hannakuh and Christmas). Or maybe get everyone to travel to a cousin’s home if they are willing to host. Just mix it up so that you all get a break from your deep grieving. Will it stop your grieving? Of course not!!! But making these changes gives you space and time to enjoy a tiny corner of your life while you are coping and processing the loss of your Loved Ones. The list of things that are 1-5 levels of pain should also be reviewed and thought about. Anything that gives you even a hint of dread should be left out of your plans for this years holidays. Start your lists of traditions sooner rather than later so you can have the time and space to come back to each tradition you write down and not be overwhelmed with how so much has memories of your Loved One attached to it. Lastly, if you can’t change much if any at all, then here is another idea to consider. For the friends and family who will be at the Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas dinner tables, send everyone an email, or even better, put it on

The first memory should be their favorite memory of your Loved One who has died, and the second memory should be the funniest memory of your Loved One who has died. Then when everyone arrives, have them tape the tags onto the chair or a large piece of gift-wrapped cardboard that you place leaning against the back in your Loved Ones chair.

Then after dinner, and before dessert, you can have the children in the family oversee the cardboard and have them choose the tags one by one and have the person who brought the tag tell the story of their memory. This will allow you all to laugh and cry and be together the way family and friends should be. It takes the elephant out of the room and gives everyone the chance to participate in a new tradition. If you are comfortable, have the whole storytelling part of the evening video recorded. These are treasures being told and family history that is lost if it is not preserved. If someone has a transcription program, you can have the audio transcribed, edited and the photos scanned and create a yearly memory book that has memories of the different family members and friend groups as the years go by. You will no longer look at their place as an empty chair, but one that brings love and laughter as well as sadness as you share your joy and sorrow together. And you can thank them for bringing you all together on a much deeper level than you would have had before they died. And any children present will learn that it is okay to grieve, to cry and to laugh – and in my opinion there is no greater gift.
