And WE’RE OFF!!! Can you believe it? We're already one month into 2025, and it looks like this year is shaping up to be another whirlwind. February—what’s it good for? It's cold, it's wet, and yes, it's still my least favorite month of the year. But this time, I decided to find a silver lining. And guess what popped up? Groundhog Day (Feb 2nd)!

On this quirky day, our furry forecaster emerges from his burrow, hopefully bringing tidings of an early spring. Did you know that before Punxsutawney Phil became the star, it was called Hedgehog Day? Back in Roman times, they would watch to see if a hedgehog saw its shadow by moonlight. Fast forward to today, and we have an array of delightful creatures predicting the weather—from Sand Mountain Sam the Opossum to Pisgah Penny the Squirrel, Bee Cave Bob the Armadillo, Al the Alligator, and my personal favorite, Cluxatawney Henrietta the chicken from Katonah, New York. Henrietta's prediction hinges on whether she lays an egg on the morning of February 2nd. How's that for a fun twist?

Another highlight of February is our feature story this month. Meet Addie Frank, a remarkable 15-year-old who moved to Brunswick Forest in 2018 with her parents, Erica and Steve. Addie is an equestrian, a writer, an athlete, and one of the most polite and determined young ladies I’ve encountered in a long time. Be sure to check out her inspiring story on page 10. Addie’s determination shines brightly, and I have no doubt she'll excel in whatever she pursues. Go Addie!

Brunswick Forest Living is thrilled to celebrate 8 years of sharing stories and significant events within our community. As our neighborhood continues to flourish, we want to hear from YOU, our cherished residents. Send us your suggestions and ideas for families and groups to spotlight in future issues. And if you have a favorite service provider, let us know. Sharing the good happening in Brunswick Forest benefits us all.

Debby Daigle Publisher ddaigle@bestversionmedia.com

February may be the shortest month, but it’s brimming with meaning and moments worth celebrating—not least because spring is just around the corner! After an unusually cold winter, many of us are undoubtedly eager for warmer days. In the meantime, let’s savor this season as a chance to embrace love and connection—whether through Valentine’s Day, acts of kindness, or simply spending quality time with those who matter most.

I’m especially excited about this month’s cover feature. Meeting Addie and sharing her story of ambition and hope for the future was truly inspiring. If you know someone—young or young at heart—whose story deserves to be highlighted, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to drop me a note at dsargente@bestversionmedia.

Remember, BFLM is YOUR magazine, and your continued support means the world to us. Thank you for being part of this incredible community!

As always, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay grateful!

COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR PETS & THEIR FAMILIES

Lanvale Animal Hospital is a newly established, state-of-the-art veterinary facility providing exceptional medical, surgical, and dental care for dogs and cats. Privately owned and operated by Dr. Scott Pett, the hospital is staffed by a dedicated and compassionate team, including Associate Veterinarian Artan Emini, who share a commitment to excellence in pet healthcare. From preventive wellness checkups to advanced orthopedic surgery, Lanvale Animal Hospital offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to the unique needs of each furry patient.

With in-house diagnostic testing, radiology, and laboratory services, along with urgent care availability during business hours, the hospital strives to provide prompt and precise care. Dr. Emini’s ability to perform advanced orthopedic surgeries on-site eliminates the need for pet owners to travel out of town or face long waits for specialists, making Lanvale a trusted referral resource for other veterinary practices in the area as well.

THE JOURNEY BEHIND LANVALE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Dr. Pett brings over three decades of veterinary experience to Lanvale, including 15 years of owning and operating a highly respected animal hospital in Massachusetts. After relocating to North Carolina, he saw an opportunity to create something special in Leland. Six months ago, he opened the doors to Lanvale Animal Hospital, realizing his vision of a facility built on best practices and high-quality care.

“The location was ideal, and the timing felt right,” Dr. Pett explains. “It’s been an exciting journey to build a practice from the ground up and watch it establish into a practice that truly prioritizes the pets and their families as well as the team that makes it happen every day.

A PHILOSOPHY OF EXCELLENCE

The guiding principle at Lanvale Animal Hospital is simple yet powerful: The way we do anything is the way we do everything… with the highest standards.

This philosophy extends to every aspect of the practice, from the facility’s

thoughtful design to the warm, personalized approach provided by the team. The environment is intentionally calming and comforting for pets while being welcoming for their owners.

Collaboration with pet owners is at the heart of the hospital’s care, ensuring that every decision considers the pet’s unique needs and fosters a sense of partnership.

“Our mission is to treat every patient as if they were our own pet, delivering the best care possible in a compassionate and stress-free environment,” Dr. Pett says.

FINDING JOY IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

For the team at Lanvale, the most rewarding part of their work is building meaningful relationships with pets and their owners. Helping a sick or injured animal recover and thrive is deeply fulfilling, and the diversity of challenges in veterinary medicine keeps the staff engaged and motivated.

“Our patients can’t tell us what’s wrong, so every case requires investigative skills and critical thinking,” Dr. Pett notes.

“It’s incredibly gratifying to solve those puzzles and see the difference we can make.”

The unique personalities of the pets add a touch of humor and heart to each day. From the curious puppy who treats every object like a chew toy to the dignified senior cat with an unmistakable air of royalty, every patient leaves an indelible impression on the team.

A MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY

Dr. Pett and his team are deeply grateful for the warm welcome they’ve received from the Leland community. “Our clients have been our best advocates, spreading the word about our services and philosophy of care,” he says. “We’re thrilled to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community.”

The hospital is also proud to work toward becoming Fear Free Certified, reflecting its commitment to reducing stress and anxiety in pets during visits. This certification involves implementing protocols that address not only physical health but also the emotional well-being of patients, creating a gentler and more positive veterinary experience.

LIFE BEYOND THE HOSPITAL

When not caring for pets, Dr. Pett and his wife, Deb, enjoy spending time with their two dogs, Stella and Archie. They’re also avid pickleball players, often found on courts in Leland and Wilmington. With four adult children spread across the country, family visits are cherished opportunities to reconnect and create new memories.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lanvale Animal Hospital continues to grow as a cornerstone of pet care in Leland, with a focus on innovation, compassion, and community involvement. By integrating cutting-edge medical techniques with a Fear Free approach, Dr. Pett and his team are shaping a new standard for veterinary care—one where pets and their families can feel genuinely cared for, both inside and out.

For pet owners in the Leland area, Lanvale Animal Hospital is more than a veterinary clinic; it’s a trusted partner in the journey toward a healthier, happier life for their beloved companions.

Addie Frank's Journey with Bandit & Beyond Lovein EVERY RIDE

In the lovely community of The Lakes, right here in Brunswick Forest, lives a young woman whose passion for equestrian sports has become a defining part of her life. Addie Frank, now 15, moved to Brunswick Forest with her parents, Erica and Steve Frank, and her sister, Audra (9), in 2018. Since then, she has blossomed into a dedicated and talented equestrian, balancing her love for horses with the demands of an Early College High School program.

Addie's love for horses began early, sparked by a gift from her grandmother on her fourth birthday. "Mimi," as Addie affectionately calls her, bought her a package of four riding lessons. What started as a simple birthday present quickly turned into a lifelong passion. Addie recalls those first lessons with fondness, noting how she felt an immediate connection with the animals. “I completed all four lessons and knew right away that this was something I wanted to continue. There was something about being around horses that just clicked for me.”

This early spark grew over the years, and by the time Addie was 14, she and her parents decided it was time to take

the next step: finding a horse of her own. The search for the perfect horse wasn't easy. Addie spent the summer of 2023 visiting different stables and meeting various horses. She knew she wanted a young, large horse, one that could grow with her as she developed her skills. In August, her persistence paid off when she made a Facebook post describing exactly what she was looking for. That post led her to Bandit, a 4-yearold unraced Thoroughbred, who seemed to be the perfect match.

From the moment Addie saw Bandit’s pictures, she was smitten. “I immediately fell in love and knew he would be mine!” she says with a smile. The connection was instant, but it was also clear that owning and training Bandit would be a significant commitment. Bandit, like many young horses, came with a big personality and a bit of an attitude. Addie was undeterred. She saw in Bandit not just a challenge but an opportunity to grow as a rider and as a person. Rewarding and challenging. Currently, Bandit is part of a training program at Honalee Stables, where Addie rides. He is ridden by her trainer one or two times a week, and Addie takes lessons on him as well. “When I get to the barn, the first thing I do is go see him and give him lots of scratches,” Addie shares. This routine has become a cherished part of her life. She spends time grooming Bandit, preparing him for their rides, and ensuring that he is well cared for after their sessions. This includes bathing him and giving him grain to help him gain weight and stay healthy. Before leaving the farm, Addie always makes sure that Bandit is comfortable, with plenty of water and hay in his stall.

The journey hasn't been without its setbacks. One of the biggest challenges Addie has faced as a competitive equestrian came shortly after she bought Bandit. At three years old, Bandit was still learning how to behave, and his big attitude often got the best of him. Addie describes him as being "like a toddler"—stubborn and sometimes uncooperative. This came to a head when a slip during training caused a major accident. Both Addie and Bandit were injured; Addie suffered broken teeth, a concussion, and whiplash, while Bandit ended up with cuts, scrapes, and issues with his back and hips.

The road to recovery was long and difficult for both of them. “The rehab was expensive and very time-consuming,” Addie recalls. But she never considered giving up. Instead, she saw the experience as a test of her commitment and resilience. She worked tirelessly to help Bandit recover, and although it was a slow process, they eventually began to make progress. Bandit had forgotten some of his manners during the time off, so Addie had to work even harder to bring him back to where he was before the accident. This experience taught Addie the importance of patience and perseverance, qualities that she carries with her in all aspects of her life. Despite these challenges, Addie considers training Bandit to be her greatest achievement in equestrian sports so far. Taking on the responsibility of a young, large horse at just 14 years old was no small task, but Addie was up for the challenge. “We’ve made such incredible progress as a team,” she says proudly. She looks forward to the future with Bandit, excited to see how far they can go together.

Addie’s life, however, isn’t just about horses. She’s also deeply committed to her education. When her family moved to Brunswick Forest from Pennsylvania, Addie found the

transition from her small, private Christian school to a public school challenging. The adjustment was difficult, and she felt out of place. Seeking a change, she decided to enroll in an Early College High School. This decision was not made lightly; Addie spent weeks weighing the pros and cons before committing. Ultimately, she chose Early College for the unique opportunities it offered—an environment that treats students more like adults and challenges them academically in ways that traditional schools might not.

The Early College experience has had a profound impact on Addie. It has taught her the importance of discipline and time management, especially given her busy schedule. Balancing high school classes, college courses, and equestrian training is no easy feat. Addie manages her time through careful planning, often scheduling her week in advance to ensure that she can fit everything in. “Some nights can be stressful, and I’ve stayed up late many nights, but I’ve never failed to complete what needs to be done,” she says. Her dedication to both her academics and her equestrian pursuits is a testament to her strong work ethic.

Among her academic subjects, English stands out as her favorite. Addie has always loved writing, finding it an easy way to express her feelings. Whether it’s through essays, stories, or poetry, writing allows her to explore her thoughts and convey her emotions in a structured way. This passion for writing complements her equestrian life, as it gives her a creative outlet to balance the physical demands of her sport.

Looking to the future, Addie has big dreams. She hopes to attend a four-year university, where she can continue

© Best Version Media

riding on the school’s equestrian team while pursuing degrees in equine studies and a chosen field of study. Her ultimate goal is to one day open her own training and riding farm, where she can share her love of horses with others and perhaps inspire the next generation of equestrians. She also dreams of competing in horse shows across the United States and even in Europe, showcasing the skills she has honed over years of hard work.

In her spare time, Addie enjoys playing volleyball, writing poetry, and spending time with her best friend, Presley. Presley, in particular, plays a significant role in Addie’s life, offering encouragement and reminding her to find joy in all that she does. “Presley is always encouraging me to bring fun into what I’m doing,” Addie says with a smile. This support network has been crucial in helping Addie stay motivated and focused, especially during the more challenging times.

Through her experiences in equestrian sports and academics, Addie has learned many valuable lessons. One of the most important is that with determination and perseverance, she can achieve anything she sets her mind to, even if it takes longer than expected. She’s also learned the importance of patience, especially when dealing with the ups and downs of life, whether they come in the form of an uncooperative horse or a difficult school assignment.

As she looks ahead, Addie is most excited about the growth and learning that the future holds. She’s eager to see how much she can achieve, both in her equestrian career and in her academic pursuits. With her strong sense of determination, her love for adventure, and her supportive family and friends, Addie is wellprepared to face whatever challenges come her way.

Ten or twenty years from now, Addie sees herself living in a place that reflects her love for wide open spaces—perhaps somewhere in Wyoming or another northern locale where she can enjoy big skies and snowy winters. “I’m a country girl at heart,” she says. While she doesn’t see herself living in Brunswick Forest forever, she knows that the lessons she’s learned here will stay with her wherever she goes.

In the end, Addie’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams. Whether she’s riding Bandit through the fields or studying late into the night, she’s always moving forward, always looking ahead to what’s next. And with her determination and drive, there’s no doubt that Addie will continue to achieve great things, both in the equestrian world and beyond.

THE PERFECT

Valentine's Day DESSERT: Chocolate Mousse

SUBMITTED BY DEBBY DAIGLE

Chocolate Mousse is the ideal dessert for Valentine's Day, offering a rich, velvety texture that feels luxurious with every bite. Its light, airy consistency makes it indulgent yet not overly heavy, allowing for a delightful end to any romantic meal. Known for its universal appeal, chocolate is often associated with love and romance, enhancing the dessert's allure. Beyond its delicious taste, Chocolate Mousse is highly versatile, easily customizable with various flavors and toppings to suit individual preferences. Its make-ahead simplicity ensures a stress-free preparation, letting you focus on enjoying the evening. Adding to its charm is its intriguing history; originating from the Old French mosse and mentioned as early as 1885, Chocolate Mousse was first described as "mayonnaise de chocolat" and is thought to have been invented by the French post-Impressionist painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec in the late 19th century. This combination of luxury, convenience, and historical allure makes Chocolate Mousse the quintessential Valentine’s Day dessert.

INGREDIENTS:

1 chocolate instant pudding mix 3.9 ounces

2 cups heavy whipping cream

• OPTIONAL: fresh strawberries sliced, raspberries, or shaved chocolate as a topping

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine pudding mix and whipping cream in a bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on low for a few seconds until blended.

Increase mixer speed to high and beat an additional 30 seconds or so until mousse forms.

Serve with strawberries and enjoy! If you're preparing it ahead of time, just pop the mousse in the fridge until you're ready to serve.

MEET ALVIN & MISSY!

Meet Alvin (on the left) and Missy (on the right).

MISSY is a black lab border collie mix. She is a rescue and is now around 11-12 yrs old. She is the mama of the group. She works with me training any dog and shows them “the ropes”. She oversees dog groups to be sure everyone is behaving and periodically joins in for a good romp!

ALVIN came to us as a service dog trainee at 8 weeks. He graduated at 6 months and went on to his next level training at Camp LeJeune, but 3 months later was released from the program because his brother developed hip dysplasia and they were concerned he would as well. Additionally, he was just too social, and it was difficult to break his overly friendly behavior! Now he happily walks around Brunswick Forest greeting everyone like the mayor! He is a 3 yr old, 130lb greeter! All the little dogs love him and he will lie down and let them crawl all over him! He is one gentle giant. Meanwhile he has his girlfriend over at Leland Pet Resort!

Freddie's: BIG FLAVOR IN A TINY BEACH GEM

I'm not sure why we waited so long to try Freddie’s, but now that we have, all feels right with the world. This tiny gem in the heart of Kure Beach is just steps from the ocean. Blink, and you might miss it—and that would be a real shame. Walking into Freddie’s is like stepping back in time, but in the best way possible. Its cozy atmosphere and warm, friendly service instantly make you feel like you’re dining at your Aunt Sophie’s house—the one who doesn’t need recipes because everything she makes is magically perfect.

With its red-and-white checkered tablecloths and delightfully oldschool charm, Freddie’s is the perfect place to settle in on a chilly evening. The extensive menu might seem ambitious, but Freddie’s pulls it off with dishes that are as delicious as they are generous. On our recent visit with friends, I ordered the shrimp

fra diavolo, which had just the right amount of kick. My husband opted for their signature pork chops, while our friends chose the chicken piccata and eggplant parmigiana. Every dish was excellent, and the portions were so hearty we all left with leftovers—lunch (or dinner) for the next day was sorted!

Of course, we couldn’t resist dessert. We shared four mini cannolis and a slice of peanut butter pie that was as rich and decadent as it was unforgettable.

Freddie’s has been a local favorite since the 1990s, and with good reason. It’s always busy, so reservations are an absolute must. Trust me, once you visit, you’ll wonder why you waited so long too!

TIP: Freddie's is known for their pork chops, and while they were good, we've had better. I suggest you stick to traditional Italian dishes if you go.

EXPLORING THE CRAFT BEVERAGE SCENE of Leland & Wilmington Sip, Sip, Hooray!

Leland and Wilmington are overflowing with flavor—and no, it’s not just from your neighbor’s backyard BBQ. Thanks to a booming craft beverage scene, our area is serving up a smorgasbord of sippable delights that’ll have locals and visitors alike raising their glasses. From wineries to breweries to bars with secret doors (yes, really), there’s a little something for everyone. So buckle up and prepare your taste buds—we’re diving into the delicious depths of our local craft scene.

CRAFT BEER: HOPPIN’ GOOD TIMES

Wilmington’s beer culture is crafting a reputation faster than you can say, “another round.” Here are a few spots you need on your brewery bucket list: Leland Brewing Company (formerly 7twenty6) 2115 ALE AVENUE

With 27 beers on tap, this pet-friendly brewery is basically the Cheers of Leland— if Cheers had four-legged regulars and themed trivia nights. Check them out at lelandbrewing.com and see what all the buzz is about (spoiler: it’s the beer).

Brunswick Beer & Cider

Nestled right here in Brunswick Forest, this place is more than a brewery; it’s a community hub. The beers are excellent, the cider’s crisp, and the wings? Worth the trip alone. Bonus: they’re big on giving back to the community, so you can feel good about every sip.

Ironclad Brewery

115 N. 2ND STREET, WILMINGTON

Great brews, a laid-back vibe, and bartenders who know their hops from their malts—Ironclad is a solid choice for a pit stop before dinner or a night out.

Our team of attorneys and legal professionals are here to help you with routine matters as well as sophisticated niche areas of the law. When you choose Humphries Law Firm for your craft legal solutions, our dedicated team is ready to work for you.

Mad Mole Brewery

6309 BOATHOUSE RD., WILMINGTON

Tucked away off the beaten path, Mad Mole’s got it all: great beers, a patio draped in twinkling lights, live music, and food trucks to keep your hunger in check. It’s like a party in a pint glass—don’t miss it.

DISTILLED SPIRITS: SHAKEN, STIRRED, AND SERIOUSLY IMPRESSIVE

Not a beer fan? No problem. Wilmington’s distillery and cocktail game is strong. Here are some hotspots for spirit enthusiasts:

The BARge

401 MARINA STREET, CAROLINA BEACH

Ever had a cocktail on a floating bar? No? Well, it’s about time you did. With beer, spirits, and live music, The BARge will have you saying, “Why didn’t I think of this?”

Sip Tiki Bar

214 N. WATER STREET

If a piña colada or margarita is calling your name, answer it here. This newcomer is making waves downtown with its tropical vibes and killer cocktails.

Tempo.33

33 S. FRONT STREET (TOP FLOOR)

Channel your inner Gatsby and head to this 1930s-style piano bar. Pro tip: dress to impress and prepare to feel fancy.

Earnest Money & Sons

211 PRINCESS STREET

This members-only spot is like a magician’s hat, but with booze. Tell the bartender what you like, and they’ll conjure up a cocktail so good you’ll want to write them a thank-you note.

The Blind Elephant

21 N. FRONT STREET

For just $5 a year, you can join this speakeasy-style bar. With live music, skilled mixologists, and a cozy atmosphere, it’s a steal—and a great place to impress your friends.

WINERIES: BECAUSE WINE NOT?

If wine is your go-to, you’re in luck. Our local wine scene is as delightful as a crisp Sauvignon Blanc on a summer day:

Fermental Beer & Wine

600 SOUTH 17TH STREET

Friendly staff? Check. Charming outdoor space? Doublecheck. Hosting a wine-and-edible-bug pairing this month? …Well, that’s a hard pass from me, but hey, if you’re into adventurous pairings, this is your spot.

Wine Knot Sky Bar & Cocktail Lounge

201 N. FRONT ST., SUITE 909

This members-only gem has secret doors and gorgeous views, making it part wine bar, part treasure hunt. Just don’t spill your Chardonnay while you’re exploring.

From hoppy IPAs to bespoke cocktails, our craft beverage scene is proof that good things really do come in small, locally-owned packages. So grab some friends, raise a glass (or two), and toast to discovering the delicious drinks our area has to offer.

And remember—sip responsibly. There’s no joy in discovering great beer if you can’t remember it the next day.

CHEERS!

NIC'S TIPS

THE BUY-IN

Think about something you’d really like to have or own… a car, an electronic device, a menu item at a restaurant you like, a good new book or anything else. What’s the process to achieving it? There’s usually an awareness of its existence and then imagining yourself happily with it and all the things it might look, feel, taste or sound like that appeal to you. If you are ‘sold’, then you have a short-term or long-term plan to acquire it in which you’re excited to own or receive it. So how does that relate to golf?

When getting ready to create our next shot, do you Buy-In with the same excitement and imagery as you would for the item you’ve imagined and want or do you worry and imagine the most awful possible result and then keep stressing about it so you can’t produce a smooth swing or motion to create that shot or putt? Imagining the car in a fender bender or the favorite menu item coming out burnt or tasting awful or even not being available are not the images that make us move forward, yet many golfers keep bringing up the worst possible scenarios before and during a shot. Golfers can train themselves, like the best players do, to focus on the good

goal and not the possible failure. The keys to an effective and enjoyable shot begin in the heart and mind, not in the physical motion (that’s the last step that’s already been set in motion by how you feel or picture it). Believing is Seeing and not the other way around. You need to Attract how things will look if they happen the way you want. You can also Attract the things that you don’t want, it just depends on how you focus and involve your energy. Worrying about if you fail in front of others, seeing a golf ball plop into the water or go out of bounds or yipping a putt will have a great chance of coming to fruition if you focus your energy, emotion and images on that. You are the captain of your emotional and mental ship, so change the channel and keep your eyes on the final good result, not on what you fear. There is no room for fear or doubt if you are 100% enjoying what you’re about to do. Own the emotion and image you want and train yourself to stay attentive to your good intentions and emotions –how it feels it the most important thing.

Buy-in, Plan (not worry) and then get excited about what’s going to happen. I have students start each shot standing behind the ball saying “I can’t wait to (smash it down the fairway, hit it

effortlessly, roll it into the hole at 6:30, hear a solid chip…)”. Without a caddy, you need to coach yourself into the shot and then buy into it with your head, heart and gut. With a caddy, they can help talk you into it and help you stay on task but that’s what makes golf mostly an emotional game (and then mental and then physical)… it’s quite a challenge to manage ourselves for a round of golf. Keep paying attention to your good intention!
