Chamber Board Chairman’s Message I am excited and honored to serve as chairman of the board of directors for the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce. To introduce myself, my name is Dale Keep and I am with Big-D Construction in the Lindon office. I recently moved here from Kauai, Hawaii. I am new to Utah and to Big-D. I have been a longtime committed member of the chambers of commerce wherever I have lived. Being new to Utah, I knew the chamber would be a great place to start building relationships with businesses and community leaders. Soon after moving here, I reached out to Eric Jensen, the chamber’s president, about my willingness to get involved, and he started to help me make connections. I was able to quickly build relationships through attending community events, award galas, golf tournaments and chamber luncheons. As I began to immerse myself in Utah and its business community, I have been very impressed with the resiliency of the businesses and people in our area. This pandemic has been rough. Businesses have had to pivot, try new ideas and find new ways to serve their customers, and many have done this exceptionally well. The tag line of the chamber is “Where Relationships Matter.” This past year, those relationships have helped us get through these tough times. Now that we are kneedeep into 2021, I encourage you to continue to develop relationships with your business associates and community members. Relationships are key in developing deep roots
in your community, and with deep roots you can withstand storms that come our way. At the chamber, we will continue to provide you with opportunities to establish, foster and grow your relationships. We will continue to provide services, resources and opportunities that will help your business thrive. At the chamber, we hope to provide you with valuable networking opportunities through our luncheons, community events, concerts in the park, celebrations and other networking events. If you would like to further enhance your chamber membership experience, we would love to have you involved as a chamber volunteer. This year, we have created two new committees, and we are looking to fill those committees with service-minded people. The first committee is the Events and Activities committee. This committee will help plan and execute our networking events. The second is our Membership and PR Committee. We want to make sure our members are well-cared for, and this committee will help communicate with our members and also help retain and recruit chamber members. Also new to 2021 is our Governments Affair Representative Steve Patten of Central Bank Utah who has been elected to represent you and our local business community. Steve will represent the interests of PG-Lindon businesses with government entities, take advocacy positions on issues and communicate with state and local governments to ensure your business has representation. At the chamber, our priority is to help you to
be successful and be the go-to resource in helping you grow your business. We have an outstanding board of directors and chamber staff who are willing to help you in any way. Come join us and get involved in the chamber. There is great opportunity for growth in our community and organization. Our business community has proved to be resilient. The chamber will continue to do our part to help drive opportunity and prosperity and be an advocate for you. I look forward to meeting each of you in the near future and serving as the chairman of the chamber board. Chamber President’s Message As the president of the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce, I am honored to work alongside our dedicated board of directors, members and civic leaders in building a strong business community that, in turn, creates a strong, vibrant community for all of us. The Pleasant Grove-Lindon chamber was founded in 1910 as the Boosters Club, Commercial Club and Wasatch Club. This year, we are celebrating 111 years as a chamber, and we are excited to carry on the legacy started in 1910. One of the first projects they took on was creating welcome signs for our great communities. One of the chamber’s goals is to work toward improving the quality of life for all through the support and commitment of its members and committees in recognizing
we are “open for business” and in creating that “welcome” for all our businesses as in the past. We are always proud to sponsor and be part of events throughout the year to accomplish these goals. Our motto is “Where Relationships Matter.” This is so important in all we do and believe it here at the chamber. To create that “welcome,” we must do it together. My message is that through participation, we will grow our businesses and build a better community. Relationships do matter in all we do. We must stay connected, actively get involved and support one another. I look forward to a great 2021 and appreciate being part of a great organization. History of the Chamber 111 Years: Celebrating the Pleasant GroveLindon Chamber of Commerce The first public announcement of a commercial club in Pleasant Grove was published in the American Fork Citizen on Dec. 31, 1909. It announced that a “Booster’s Club” was to meet and that officers would be elected the following month. Men anxious to promote business in Pleasant Grove gathered at the City Hall, which was the soft-rock building at 105 S. 100 East. There, they formed, adopted and signed a constitution in January of 1910. The club was known by three names from 1910 to 1924: • Boosters Club: 1910 to 1913. • Commercial Club: 1914 to 1921. • Wasatch Club: 1921 to 1924. On May 28, 1924, the group incorporated into the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce and continued for a period of 50 years with a yearly membership fee of $1. It was the second such organization in Utah County. In 1997, conceding that the main function of the combined chamber’s business (as it always had been) was to help generate and retain businesses in the towns, they began working to form business partnerships, employers with employees, and get them all involved in the chamber’s efforts. They formed the Downtown Merchants Association. The duel-city group accomplished so much through the year to enhance the two communities that neighboring chambers came to them for advice on how they could do so much with so little in finances. Volunteerism, cooperation and caring about their communities have gone a long way in their successful achievements.

2021 Organization of the Year Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry - North County The day before Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry - North County opened, a woman knocked on its door and asked for help. She was embarrassed to ask for assistance; her family had moved to Utah from Texas and her husband had a good job, but she and one of their three children had illnesses requiring $2,700 in medication each month. The family’s finances had run dry. The food pantry served her family for a few months. “Then she found a good solution and was on her feet,” said Al Switzler, cofounder and volunteer at Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry - North County. Since opening its doors on July 27, 2016, this food pantry has assisted tens of thousands of clients, typically between 3,500 and 4,000 per month. In recognition of its service to the community, the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce presented its 2021 Organization of the Year Award to the food pantry. “Our mission is to help individuals and

families through tough times,” Switzler said. Switzler and Mike Carter, cofounders of Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry - North County, were successful businessmen long before they began running their food pantry. They also helped cofound VitalSmarts, a leadership training company based in Provo. That company received the 2007 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Utah region. Switzler said one day, as they neared retirement, he and Carter were at lunch and started asking each other what they could do to help their community. “And so we started looking,” Switzler said. Research led to contact with the Utah Food Bank, where they were told that the biggest need for food assistance in Utah County was in Pleasant Grove and American Fork. They also learned about Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry, an organization based in Spanish Fork that serves communities in southern Utah County. The pair contacted Wendy Osborne, founder of Tabitha’s Way, and eventually decided their interests were similar. Osborne already had the legal paperwork done and the technical expertise of running a food pantry, so they decided to open a Tabitha’s Way
to serve the northern part of the county. It took eight months to find a suitable location, obtain needed equipment and get things set up in order to open, Switzler said. The pantry operates at 920 E. State Street, Suite K, in American Fork. Pleasant Grove and American Fork still demonstrate the biggest need as one-fourth of the pantry’s clients come from Pleasant Grove and another fourth from American Fork. The remaining half come from the other eight cities the pantry serves. Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry - North County has a three-fold mission: to provide temporary food assistance, to recommend resources for self-reliance and to help neighbors help their neighbors. Switzler said clients receive two weeks of food during each visit, and on average clients come in six times or less. While there are some that require long-term assistance, many simply need a short-term boost to get them through a difficult time. While at the pantry, clients are referred to other services such as free medical help or employment assistance. All of the work at the pantry is done by volunteers from the local area, and nearly all of the pantry’s funding is supplied by local sources. This is what neighbors helping neighbors means, Switzler said. “We couldn’t do it without local neighbors. There’s a reason we call ourselves Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry,” he said. “You couldn’t run a food pantry without an army of big hearted, wonderful volunteers.” The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges as food drives were canceled. However, the public was invited to drop off food in a safe way and clients were able to utilize a drive-through process to pick up their items. Switzler said the pantry has been very conscious of safety protocols such as masking and taking temperatures. “We went the entire time, 2020, without shutting down one day,” he said.

Wiht a business-friendly environment and new projects on the horizon, the area is poised for future success. Strategically located in the Point of the Mountain submarket, Pleasant Grove/Lindon offers the advantage of being in north Utah County with close proximity to central and south valley communities. As the only global commercial real estate firm with a full-service office in Utah County (located in Pleasant Grove, Colliers International proudly serves the community and continues to be recognized as one of the Top Economic Engines by Utah Valley Business. With a focus on best-in-class resources, market intelligence and the most experienced professionals in the market, Colliers continues to be ranked number one. Several companies have announced new headquarters and major office expansion in this area including Pura, KLAS Enterprises, GoHealth and Whistic. - GoHealth is completing a new 156,000-square-foot office building off Interstate 15 in Lindon. This Chicago-based Medicare plan distributor plans to expand to more than 1,000 employee and invest significant capital to grow its Utah operation. - Pura leased the sixth floor of the prominent Grove Tower, an area totaling 32,586 square feet of space, to accommodate its rapid growth. Pura offers a smart fragrance diffuser that allows users to control their favorite scents from a convenient app. - KLAS Enterprises recently leased the third floor of the new Urban Grove building. Notable customers include Airbnb, Okta, Betterment, Vonage, Qualtrics and other world-leading brands within healthcare, manufacturing, energy and education. Utah continues to weather the pandemic well with economic strength demonstrated by a growing population, postive job creation and low unemployment. The Utah Legislature closed its 2021 session with budget surpluses, record spending and a round of tax cuts. Gross domestic product is projected to grow in 2021 by 6.2 percent — an astonishing number considering the challenges of the past year. The diversity of Utah’s economy, which is also applicable to and observed in Pleasant Grove/Lindon, has helped reduce the negative total impact of the pandemic, compensating for the challenges faced by several industries.
A construction boom continues to drive growth, with the cost of construction and residential units skyrocketing. Wasatch Front home prices have reached new levels, fueled by in-migration and low interest rates, making affordable housing a challenge. The commercial real estate sector has observed rising office vacancy rates during the pandemic, resulting in a slower market, with retail and hospitality seeing both gaines and losses — depending on location and the players. The industrial sector is reporting its strongest conditions on record, with low, single-digit vacancy and rising lease rates resulting from explosive demand. This trend is expected to continue. Multifamily housing is also holding strong, with record absorption, demand and momentum in spite of rising costs. Pleasant Grove/Lindon is positioned for success as the community gathers strength and participates in what is expected to be a dynamic future for the Wasatch Front.

Pleasant Grove Mayor’s Message Hindsight is 2020! We are done with that historic year and are ready to move on. I just want to take a moment to tell everyone how grateful I am we all made it through last year; it was a tough one. Although, it did become readily apparent how many heroes we have in our community. Isn’t it amazing we were able to keep our facilities open, albeit in a different fashion? Thank you to the many employees at the Recreation Center who were constantly on their toes abiding by the ever-changing restrictions and regulations. From the online streaming classes to the adaptations of their programs, we were still able to keep the recreation facility functioning in some capacity. We were fortunate to have our pool open for the summer. The library staff also showed ingenuity by moving their story time adventures online. Many children are still able to enjoy these engaging activities in the comfort of their own homes.
They have also established a clean and safe way to check out library books for the community with flexible hours and accommodations. Our fire and police department had a busy summer with most notably the fire on the mountain. Many hands were involved in battling that, and we thank all of you. The public works department stepped up like they always do when we had unusual events transpire this year. They proved to us we are in good hands. Together, we are going to move forward as a city and have a great big 100-year Strawberry Days Celebration. We are going to make up for what we missed last year. We have some great projects in store this year and are optimistic for a wonderful 2021. Thanks for your support! Guy Fugal Pleasant Grove Mayor

History of Pleasant Grove In July of 1850, nearly 171 years ago three men set off from the Salt Lake Valley bound for an unsettled area in Utah Valley. At Brigham Young’s request, William H. Adams, John Mercer and Philo T. Farnsworth traveled 28 miles and staked out an area near a “pleasant” grove of trees, which signaled that the land was rich with water and good soil. They established farms in what is now the southwest corner of Pleasant Grove City. Two months later, seven families followed these three men to fortify the new settlement. On Sept. 13, 1850, George S. Clark and Susannah Dalley Clark, Richard and Ann Elizabeth Sheffer Clark, John Greenleaf Holman and Nancy Clark Holman, Lewis Harvey and Lucinda Clark Harvey, Johnathan Harvey and Sarah Herbert Harvey, Charles Price and his wife, Harriet Marler and her children, and teamsters John Wilson and Ezekiel Holman arrived in Pleasant Grove. At first, the community was known as “Battle Creek.” This name was chosen because the town was situated near the battleground of the first skirmish between the

A monument with a plaque describing this battle is located in Kiwanis Park at the mouth of Battle Creek Canyon. and church inside the fort. Today, memorial cornerstones mark the corners of the historic fort. On Jan. 19, 1855, the territorial legislature approved Pleasant Grove to become incorporated. The town’s residents desired a more “uplifting” name for their city, so they drew upon the original description of the settlement. The settlers began calling their town Pleasant Grove after that “pleasant” grove of cottonwood trees located between Battle Creek and Grove Creek (near the current-day intersection of Locust Avenue and 200 South). The first municipal election was held in May of 1855, and Henson Walker was elected the first mayor. By then, the town had grown to 623 people. By 1908, Pleasant Grove had become a major producer of Marshal strawberries; approximately 250 acres in the area were being used to grow strawberries. The berries were then shipped to neighboring markets. In 1921, the Wasatch Club (the predecessor of today’s Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce) organized a festival to bring attention to Pleasant Grove’s strawberry market. The first ever Strawberry Day attracted 10,000 to 15,000 people to the city for a public program, free strawberries and cream, and a small-scale rodeo with local stock and cowboys (townspeople circled their cars to form an arena). Strawberry Days is one of the longest-running community celebrations in Utah. For more stories of Pleasant Grove’s past, visit the Pleasant Grove Historic Preservation Commission’s Facebook page at facebook.com/PGHistoric.
Pleasant Grove Today Businesses attracted to opportunities in PG When I moved to Utah in 1990, the only thing I knew about Pleasant Grove was it was the city located next to the rest area on I-15 on my way to Salt Lake City. Who remembers that rest area? It has since been torn down to make room for the exit to Pleasant Grove Boulevard. In 1990, the population of Pleasant Grove was 13,927. Today, 37,970 people call Pleasant Grove home and is the 24th largest city in the state. I am lucky to have had a front-row seat to watch this tremendous growth during the last 30 years. Once a town that only had a handful of fast-food restaurants and one major grocery store, Pleasant Grove now has a plethora of dining options and a number of large grocery store chains. The city has attracted many businesses to this area. Among them are two national companies that intentionally chose Pleasant Grove as their first location in the state. Last year, Everbowl opened up its first location in Utah. “We saw Pleasant Grove as an up-and-coming city in Utah and thought it would be a great place to plant our new concepts,” explained Brad Barber, operations and development manager of Wags Capital. Keep your eye out; they aren’t done growing. There are some pretty exciting plans for the property they own in the Valley Grove area. Not only new to Utah but new to the west is Express Oil Change and Engineers. Franchise owners Joel and Carol Harris moved here from Birmingham, Alabama. They were drawn to Utah after frequent trips here to visit family and to ski. Looking for the next step after retiring, they were impressed with the company and values of Express Oil and decided to help it grow and to bring it to Utah.
“The mentality of this company is, ‘If you’re a good neighbor, then you’re going to be successful,’” Carol Harris said. She and Joel are excited to be part of our community. “The unique thing about this oil change facility is you can stay in your car while they change your oil,” Carol explained. Now, tell me if young mothers aren’t going to love this concept with sleeping children who can be left undisturbed in their car seats! While some residents won’t always welcome this growth, we still hope everyone can adapt and be good neighbors. To reiterate the mantra of Express Oil, “If you’re a good neighbor, then you’re going to be successful.” I hope we can reach out to not only our new neighbors but our long-time ones and support each one of them to keep Pleasant Grove an amazing place to live.

Miss Pleasant Grove 2019-2020 Miss Pleasant Grove Brooklin Allen has had the amazing and remarkable experience serving our city for two years. The extraordinary events of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic led to the invitation and opportunity for Allen to serve for an additional year. She was honored, grateful and excited to continue serving our city with her whole heart and shared a message she is passionate about: The Ripple Effect - Spreading Kindness, Positivity and Hope both online and offline. The Ripple Effect is a nonprofit organization that educates, inspires and promotes the need for and benefit of kindness in our lives while providing inspiration and opportunities to act with intentional kindness. The ripple of kindness spreads through individuals, businesses, school kindness clubs, community workshops for women and girls, kindness service events and city kindness months. You can follow along on Instagram at @the.ripple_effect. During the past year, Allen has put kindness into action in our community planning and implementing many kindness events. On Veterans Day, she placed 150 beautiful mums mingled with American flags at the veterans memorial in our community for residents to come by and pick up since there would not be a memorial event due to COVID-19. Each mum was picked up, and Allen received many wonderful messages from veterans who felt seen and loved that day. At Christmastime, she reached out again asking our community for help with donations for refugee teens in Salt Lake City. She gathered books, games, hats and handwritten cards and made 350 Christmas boxes to donate to refugee teens. In an effort to share this message of kindness and raise money to donate to Childrens Miracle Network hospitals, Miss America Organization scholarships and her kindness service projects and events, Allen designed a line of kindness sweatshirts and T-shirts. During the past two years, Allen raised more than $12,500 to donate to CMN and MAO scholarships as well as $2,000 for The Ripple Effect Kindness service projects. You can order a kindness sweatshirt and donate to these great causes on her website at thepositiverippleeffect.com. During the month of February, Allen presented a proclamation to the mayor and city council to designate February 2021 as Choose Kindness Month for the second year in a row. The month started off with a shoe drive in all Pleasant Grove schools and a kick-off drive-through event where community members dropped off shoes for SOLES4SOULS and picked up a calendar and bag full of supplies to put kindness into action. More than 6,500 pairs of shoes were donated to this great cause. Also during February, daily invitations were posted on Instagram at @the.ripple_effect and at @choosekindnesspg with inspiring and intentional ways to put kindness into action. Allen worked closely with the kindness clubs within each of our schools where more than 150 signs of gratitude were made and placed to say thank you to our healthcare workers at American Fork Hospital and six care centers in Pleasant Grove. Allen partnered with Salon Prichett where a workshop was held for 90 women who came and were inspired to be kind to themselves. The month ended with a Kindness is Golden workshop hosted by Al-
24
len for girls ages 8 to 17 where they came together and learned how to be kind to themselves and to others and put service into action. Allen is currently a sophomore at Brigham Young University studying psychology with the goal to be an eating disorder therapist. She also teaches dance at The Dance Conservatory where she has been teaching for five years. One of her greatest loves is teaching PALS, a dance class for adults with special needs. Serving as Miss Pleasant Grove these past 2 years has been the most rewarding, incredible and life changing experience. She is “forever changed” from the amazing experiences she has had sharing something that she is so passionate about, and serving a city she loves.

Recreation Outdoor pickleball coming to Pleasant Grove
Years ago, Pleasant Grove City hired Linda Weeks as a recreation coordinator, and she introduced pickleball to the staff at the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center. It wasn’t long before the city invested in nets and paddles and created opportunities to play indoors at the Recreation Center. The city was amazed at how quickly the sport caught on. Open play filled up quickly; more nets were purchased and more times set apart to keep up with the demand. The beauty of pickleball was the wide array of ages of those showing up to play. Young and old could compete against each other on a pretty level playing field. Experience, regardless of age, was the key component to a good pickleball player. As the excitement for the sport grew in Pleasant Grove, the question being asked was, “When will Pleasant Grove get outdoor courts?” Over the past few years, Pleasant Grove City has purchased homes along Locust Avenue between Veterans Park and the Recreation Center. The intent was to expand Veterans Park at some time in the future. Last year, the Pleasant Grove City Council set aside funds to follow through on that expansion. Included in the expansion were new restrooms, a new pavilion and eight new pickleball courts. The courts are being built with top-of-theline construction techniques and they will be lit at night. The new courts will help fill the ever-expanding need to accommodate those using pickleball as a form of recreation and exercise. The pickleball courts are scheduled to open on Saturday, June 12. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held that day at 11 a.m. as part of the 100th Strawberry Days Celebration. We invite all to attend the ribbon cutting and also use this new facility.

PG Cares Program helping youth, adults through difficult times Through its first year of operation, PG Cares has taken its message of hope and help to youth and adults through classrooms and chalk drawings, and it has more work planned for the future. PG Cares, a Communities that Care coalition, was organized in the spring of 2020 in Pleasant Grove with a goal to educate residents about issues such as abuse, addiction and suicide as well as link them to available resources. Communities that Care is a program utilized nationwide to promote healthy youth development, improve youth outcomes and reduce problem behaviors. The local program is funded through a partnership between Pleasant Grove City and Utah County as well as grants. “I’m definitely passionate about prevention because if we just look at what’s wrong, it can feel really heavy and hopeless, but if we look at what we can do and how we can improve and all the resources that are out
26
there, there’s actually so much hope that we can do better,” said Tamara Oborn, coordinator of the PG Cares program. “As a mother, that feels really good.” PG Cares partnered with United Way’s EveryDay Strong program to offer the Chalk the Lot activity during Strawberry Days last year. Residents were invited to have fun together creating chalk drawings in the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center’s parking lot while also learning more about EveryDay Strong, a program meant to help Utah County youth struggling with anxiety and depression. Those who signed up for the EveryDay Strong parenting class received a Sodalicious gift card. PG Cares plans to again offer the Chalk the Lot event during the 2021 Strawberry Days celebration. PG Cares received a grant from the county during the past year meant specifically to fund drug prevention work. Through those funds, PG Cares implemented an eight-week
www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce
pilot program in Grovecrest and Valley View elementary schools called Positive Action. This program offers curriculum designed for different grade levels that teaches students how positive thoughts lead to positive actions and vice versa, leading to a positive outlook on life and a desire to learn. Implementing this program came from a desire to address problems in the local community with youth depression rates and family conflict. Oborn said in Pleasant Grove, 30 percent of youth feel they are in a home that has a high rate of family conflict, and 60 percent of youth are struggling with symptoms of depression. “The good news is more people are getting
help. There are way more services available than there ever have been before,” Oborn said, “and people are more likely to reach out than they ever have before.” This first offering of Positive Action has been conducted as a once-a-week, after-school program with about 25 children participating at each school. The lessons are about 15 minutes long. “The kids have loved it. They seem to enjoy it and seem to be learning,” Oborn said. “I know as a parent going through the training (to implement the program), I learned so much and was excited to teach things to my kids in a more understandable way about their self-worth and being honest with themselves and then how to treat others with respect after they have learned to respect themselves.” Oborn said teachers have loved the program as well, and the hope is to eventually move these programs into local classrooms. PG Cares will provide the curriculum for schools as they show interest. PG Cares staff has also recently been
trained to facilitate classes in the Guiding Good Choices parenting program, a fiveweek course that helps parents improve family relationships and strengthen bonds with their children so they are more likely to make good choices. These classes will be offered in the evening free of charge at the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center. Those interested can learn of upcoming dates by following the PG Cares Facebook page. “Guiding Good Choices is just a great way to really build better family relationships and improve bonding, which we know helps our kids make better choices,” Oborn said. “It’s about teaching parents why their relationship with their kids is so important and plays such a big role in the choices their kids make and how to do that better.” A community-wide underage vaping prevention program is currently in the works and will eventually be introduced by PG Cares. Volunteers are being sought to help with PG Cares efforts. Those interested may contact Oborn at toborn@pgcity.org.

History of Lindon The early settlers of Utah began to spread throughout the area after their arrival in 1847. The first pioneers came to Pleasant Grove on Sept. 13, 1850. At that time, Pleasant Grove encompassed all the area from American Fork Canyon to Provo. As the population grew, some began to spread south along the trail. This area was then called “Stringtown.” This began in about 1861. Certain events occurred that encouraged the growth. The transcontinental railroad connected at Promontory Point on May 10, 1869, which led to further railroad connection south into Utah County. This growth made mail delivery more necessary. Mail was delivered to Lindon at a point along State Street near a large linden tree (on the west side of the street). The first post office was then opened in the Cullimore Store just across the road on Sept. 25, 1889. This area became a very important
place in Lindon, not only for mail delivery but also in the name of the city and area when the city was granted incorporation in 1924. Evidently, the area described as near the “linden tree” was misspelled and Lindon was accepted as the area’s incorporated name. It also became an important place for travel. As the all-electric railway came from Salt Lake through all the cities in Utah County to Payson, one stop was near the tree. This privately funded transportation was way ahead of its time. It ran right through the center of each city

and was very comfortable and very inexpensive (1.5 pennies per mile). By 1912, it ran to Provo and on to Payson by 1916. Many came to the Lindon stop, left the train and were transported by local horses and buggies or wagons to the Geneva Resort, a popular resort area on the east shore of Utah Lake. The resort offered good food, music, dancing, a beach, fun people and even opportunities to hand-feed a black bear that wandered through the crowd. There was also a 50-foot-high water slide. Lindon continues to grow. It’s home to good people and fun places to be and offers great views of the mountains and valley. Those early settlers laid a great foundation for us. May we remember them, their hard work and their goodness. As we learn about and remember them, may we strive to be like them in our little bit of country.

Economic Development Lindon planning for future development Lindon City is putting plans in place to ensure that as the city’s last large parcels of undeveloped land are filled, there is direction in place to guide that development. The Lindon City Council recently approved a land use plan for 700 North between State Street and 1700 West. This plan sets forth a vision for how the city would like to see the land develop, a vision that can be also be used as an economic development tool in attracting businesses to the city. “It’s our gateway into Lindon City,” said Mike Florence, Lindon City planning and economic development director. “This is our last area to develop in the city, and so we want to make sure it’s planned appropriately.” Located just one mile from Exit 275 on Interstate 15, the 700 North corridor is the location of “basically our last vacant land in the city,” Florence said. The approximately 128-acre area contains the last remaining large contiguous set of land parcels available
in Lindon where a unique development could be created, the land use plan states. Currently, about 21,000 vehicles drive through the area daily, and UTA has plans to create a Bus Rapid Transit route through the area. Just south of the corridor, Ivory Homes is constructing its Anderson Farm Development, a 850-unit residential development with a mix of single-family homes, townhomes and multi-family structures. “The 700 North site is envisioned as a gateway to Lindon City and fosters unique experiences for the community to gather,” the plan states. “High design standards will preserve and enhance the quality of the city. The site will be developed with community spaces, retail, restaurants, employment center, services, and other experiential attractions to create an environment for a live-work-play community.” The land use plans outlines four goals for development of the 700 North corridor: 1. Enhance the 700 North corridor to

create a gateway into Lindon. 2. Create a walkable town center. 3. Support and plan for future transit. 4. Support economic development. The proximity of the Anderson Farm Development and the freeway entrance make the 700 North area an excellent location for a Mixed-Use Center. This kind of center would provide a central community gathering place with a mixture of shops, restaurants, office space and entertainment options. With a Bus Rapid Transit route planned in the area as well as the possibility of a future TRAX light rail line, the area also offers the opportunity for transit-oriented development. Florence said the area is planned in a way that is true to the roots of the city but also embraces the vision of creating a regional destination area that provides services and places to gather for both Lindon residents and those living outside the city. “The city is being proactive in developing

a land use plan so developers don’t have to guess on what the city wants there,” Florence said. “This sets a vision saying this is where we’d like certain kinds of uses.” Adding to the future quality of life for Lin-
don residents is the Anderson Farms Park, which is being created at 1550 W. Lancaster Way as part of the Anderson Farm Development. This 10-acre city park will include a pavilion, playgrounds, pickleball courts,
basketball courts and soccer fields. The park is anticipated to be completed this fall. “We’re excited. It will be a great amenity for both Lindon residents and as a regional park,” Florence said.
