RESIDENT ARTIST 2021 BRYON DRAPER
Springville resident and sculptor Bryon Draper has been selected to be honored as the 2021 Art City Days Resident Artist. Draper was born and raised in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. In 1990, he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in three-dimensional art from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. While attending school there, he became interested in sculpture and ceramics. During Draper’s years of school in Hawaii, he worked as a lab assistant in the sculpture/ceramic studio and derived much satisfaction in helping students with their projects. It was during this time that he began to consider the possibility of teaching art on a college level. Following graduation, he returned to Canada where he met and married Cathenia Yawney in May of 1991. A year later, Draper was accepted into the master of fine arts program at Brigham Young University. After graduating in 1995 with an emphasis in sculpture, Draper and his wife returned to Canada. In 1999, he accepted a full-time faculty position at BYU where he
currently enjoys teaching sculpture as an associate professor of art. He also maintains a professional art career. Draper’s sculptures have been included in numerous national and international juried exhibitions and have received several awards. One of his sculptures is currently on display at the Springville Museum of Art as part of the museum’s 2021 Spring Salon exhibit. Draper and his wife have been residing in Springville for 22 years where they have raised their three children Breanne, Alexandra and Keaton. Draper creates his sculptures by attaching selected cast bronze figure fragments to cut blocks of stone. He introduces meaning through the use of pose, material and method of construction that speaks simultaneously of antiquity and the contemporary.
In doing this, he hopes to use past ideologies as a catalyst for considering issues that are currently relevant. He tries not to impose any particular interpretation on the viewer but rather develop layers or suggestions of possible readings. This leaves greater room for the viewer to intellectually develop personal meaning.
