Dales Directories Community Page

150 not out for Darley Dale Cricket Club! A much loved Derbyshire cricket club is celebrating its past, present and future this year as it reaches its 150th birthday. Darley Dale Cricket Club, which remains an integral part of the local community today, has a programme of events planned throughout 2013, including a festival of cricket in July which will see a number of touring teams visit during the day and a variety of fundraising events held each night. The biggest occasion however gets underway on Saturday 16 February when three club players walk 150 miles for 150 years on a charity pilgrimage over eight days from Darley's home ground of Station Road to Lords, the home of cricket in London. The club has an esteemed history, coming a long way since it was founded in 1863. In fact, the local love of cricket led to the Daily Mail writing in 1923 that ''Darley Dale, a village of under 4,000 inhabitants, holds a unique position in English cricket. One resident in every 16 plays cricket”. One such resident, Mike Hendrick, was born in the village in 1948 and would ultimately go on to play 30 tests for England. The pitch was described by the great West Indian batsman Gordon Greenidge as a mud heap and a cow field. He concedes in his autobiography that even with his powerful strokeplay he had difficulty hitting the ball off the square! Writing about winning the John Player League trophy in 1975 (when Hampshire defeated Derbyshire to lift the trophy in front of some 6,000 people) Greenidge reflects that the champagne corks popped on that most curious of evenings in the Derbyshire Dales. The club’s heyday was undoubtedly during the 1970s and early 1980s when it was crowned Derbyshire County League (DCL) champion and cup winner on no less than five occasions. The team dominated with a wealth of locally nurtured talent, leading it to be the toast of the village and although it lost its way a little during the late 1990s, the club is now re-establishing itself with two senior sides in the DCL and the mid week XI compete in the Longstone League.

ble for Cancer Research UK and the Matlock Hospitals League of Friends, as well as their beloved club. The team hope that the money raised from all the club’s fundraising activities throughout 2013 will take them a step closer to their dreams of a new pavilion. Vice Captain Stuart Taylor, said: “Like many other members of the team I’ve been playing here since I was a kid and I want to help make sure that we can keep the club’s legacy alive for another 150 years so it can remain at the heart of the community long into the future. “Although the 150 mile walk is a massive mission I can’t wait to get cracking and make sure we reach our destination - no doubt with a few blisters along the way!” Walking over 20 miles a day for eight days, they will make nightly pit stops at Derbyshire County Cricket Club in Derby; Loughborough; Market Harborough; Northampton; Milton Keynes; Luton and Watford, before they arrive at Lords in London on Saturday 23 February. Speaking about their chosen charities, Jonny said: “CRUK is a cause very close to both mine and Stuart’s hearts because if it wasn’t for their vital research our mums might not be here today. The Whitworth Hospital was also top of the list for everyone at the club because even though it’s only small it’s had a massive impact on all of us at DDCC, caring for so many of our friends and families over the years. And of course it’s been handy to have a walk-in centre at the top of the road when one of us has taken a direct hit from a fast bowler!” Supporting the players on their mission (by car!) is club treasurer and lifelong DDCC player, Simon Cotterill: “The lads have got a real challenge on their hands and it certainly won’t be easy. I really hope that as many people as possible dig deep and donate as much as they can, to not only help us achieve our dreams of a new pavilion, but raise vital funds for two very important charities too.” Other events taking place throughout the year include: • Natwest Cricketforce weekend (5-7 April) • Pro Cricket 6s competition (5 May) • Week long festival of cricket (22 -27 July)

A flourishing junior section is evident with U11s kwik cricket as well as a U13s hard ball side already proving their worth with a conveyor belt of young players making the step up to senior level.

• End of season gala dinner (date TBC in November)

Completing the 150 mile trek are team mates Jonny Shaw (26), Stuart Taylor (34) and Jon Cooper (34). They want to raise as much money as possi-

A Hidden Gem - The Old Smithy in Beeley Whether you are walking, cycling, exploring, or just discovering this amazing part of the Peak District with family or friends, make that little extra effort to seek out The Old Smithy, you won’t be disappointed. The Old Smithy is situated in the un spoilt village of Beeley on the famous Chatsworth Estate. The Tea Room’s re opened after a complete refurbishment last August by Faye Mellor the present owner. Faye had a successful career in law but had always yearned to have her own tea rooms, so when the chance came of buying this business she jumped in with both feet leaving behind her career. I went along recently with my mother in law on a cold and snowy March day to try The Old Smithy for ourselves, and I must say Faye has done a great job in creating a warm a friendly environment. The cafe was light and airy with a homely feel, we sat down near to the log burning fire and pondered the menu.

share it with us but it was a closely guarded secret, what a shame. We finished off our meal by sharing a lovely homemade Spotted Dick and Custard, washed down with two Decaffeinated Coffees. All the hot drinks were served with the chefs special little short bread which was a really lovely touch. There's also a great outdoor area as well for warmer days, It’s an ideal meeting place for coffee and a chat or a special occasion Opening Hours Tues-Sun 10am-4pm and Bank Holidays. The shop is open from 9am -5pm during the summer, 4pm in the winter, and stocks food, drink and cards from local suppliers as well as a small convenience section. Why don’t you plan your next day out with a trip to The Old Smithy , you won’t be disappointed.

We both ordered pots of tea; although they do have a licence if you fancied a glass of wine with your meal. The tea is made with fresh leaves and came in ‘proper’ tea pots, not those leaky stainless steel things that drive me insane! I fancied the Fish & Chips and Peas and my choice was confirmed by our waitresses recommendation, and my mother in law ordered Mushroom Stroganoff with Rice. All the food is freshly prepared at the Old Smithy so considering this we didn’t have to wait long before both our lunches arrived. My Fish & Chips was beautifully presented, with the fish being served in a little deep frying basket, it was also served with Home Made Chips , Peas and Tarter Sauce. My mother in laws Mushroom Stroganoff looked and tasted really lovely, and despite the ample portion she had no trouble in finishing her meal. (you can see a picture of both meals on our facebook page www.facebook.com/TheDalesDirectory ). The batter of my fish was the crispiest I’d had in a long time, our waitress even asked the chef for the recipe for us, he said he would loved to

From fabulous breakfasts, lunchtime meals and snacks, to afternoon tea and cake. All ingredients are locally sourced and everything is freshly prepared on site including baking!

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am till 4pm and Bank Holidays. The Old Smithy, Chapel Hill, Beeley, DE4 2NR

It’s Time To Make That will Janet’s story I bumped into my friend Janet last week and she was in quite a state. Her father had died some years ago and her mother had continued to live in the family home since. Things had gone badly wrong a few months ago, when her mother had a fall and broke her arm and it transpired that she had suffered a stroke which caused her to fall. Her mother, Caroline, was now in hospital and unable to deal with her financial affairs. To make matters worse, it was apparent that she would have to move into a care home and the property would have to be sold to pay for her care. As she owned the whole property, the family would end up with virtually nothing. If Caroline and her husband had made Wills including a property trust and become tenants in common, the home would have been saved from being sold. Janet was also very concerned that her mother had not got around to making a Lasting Power of Attorney, which would have enabled Janet to deal with her mother’s financial affairs on her behalf and now that she has had a stroke, she is not in a position to make an LPA. Janet can apply to deal with her mother’s affairs but this can be very costly and she may not even succeed – the Local Authority could be appointed instead – what a disaster! It is so important to make the correct Wills whilst both partners are alive, so that the property can be protected – and Lasting Powers of Attorney can be prepared at the same time. This applies equally to younger couples – protect what you have worked for for your children. Don’t put off writing your Wills till another day – you never know what is around the corner. Design, digital, marketing and print services - all under one roof Over the last few years I have got to know Jenny and Phil Harris well, they are a lovely couple. We meet regularly at a business networking group that we both belong to. I must say that they are both well respected on the networking circuit, and are forever getting lovely testimonials from colleagues regarding the quality of the work that they provide. Jenny and Phil and their son Jon took over Minuteman Press in Chesterfield in October 2010, and as with many small businesses it wasn’t part of a grand plan, it simply evolved as the family took advantage of the opportunities that arose. Jon qualified in design at Loughborough University, and from University went to work in the fitness industry in Sales and Marketing, over time this developed into design related activities. Jon left the fitness world and went self employed for a few years, working on graphic design, web sites, window graphics and signage for a variety of businesses including Donnington Park, JCB and many other local companies. As with many sole traders the travelling and hours started to take it’s toll, and it was time for a change to improve the work life balance. Jon was interviewed by Steve (the previous owner of Minuteman Press, Chesterfield) and started the next day! Jon concentrated on design and production and Steve, Sales and Marketing. “The technologies were different to what I’d used before” says Jon “ but I enjoyed the learning process and getting into digital print”. “ After a couple of years I actually left Minuteman Press to travel the world, visiting Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and America, but I heard on the grapevine that Steve was considering selling up. “My parents Phil and Jenny, have many years experience

16

in accounting and business planning and we discussed the possibility of us taking the business over and pushing it forward as a family business .They were excited by the idea, so excited in fact that, with no experience of print, they decided to branch out from their long term careers in the world of finance to become partners in the business”. Not before they travelled to new Zealand, the Arctic, Antarctica, Peru and the Galapagos Islands…..a family trait perhaps”. You’ll find Minuteman Press in the Chatsworth Business Park at 172 Chatsworth Road, neighbouring Brampton Brewery,Noble Motorsport and EXLEN computers. Phil and Jenny take care of the business finance, whilst Jon concentrates on design, with their other team members Kelly Bond, Kelly stood in for Jon while he was travelling and was kept on as an additional graphic designer. She is a familiar face around Chesterfield, performing in The Shamble Band. It’s been a busy couple of years, made evident by their need for a new apprentice, Kayleigh Buss, appointed through the Centre for Business Development. Minuteman Press offers a complete design service, business stationary and marketing material and have access to in-house digital printers. They have a large format printer and a plan copier suitable for engineering drawings and architects plans and large posters etc, print finishing kit and can offer mail - merge, leaflet print and delivery and many more print based services. As they are part of a franchise group they also have access to other print and finishing services available from their offices such as a point of sale and promotional products. If you are in need of print services why not give the team a t Minuteman Press a call where they’d be more that happy to assist, please call them all 01246 554562.

Computer Tip Look After your Laptop Battery Modern laptop batteries are Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) and they do wear out and will need to be replaced but you can help by treating yours correctly. Don’t let it get too hot or too cold – room temperature is good. Don’t leave it discharged for long periods of time – if you’re not going to use it for a few weeks, charge it to around 50% and then take it out of the laptop. Every month or so let it fully discharge and then recharge it to recalibrate it, but normally recharge once it drops to around 30% - and if you want to run it plugged in all the time, take the battery out. FITN ESS Is Fruit Good or Bad For Weight Loss?

by John Hill

After watching the much talked about “50 shocking facts about diet and exercise” one of the points made was regarding fruit and if it can contribute to weight loss or weight gain. A few people tend to get up in arms about fruit and the effect it has on body fat. When it comes to fruit, for me, a better question is “Is fruit necessary?” The best place to start in my opinion is to ask ‘how long do you think that fruit has been part of the human diet?’ Depending on where you live, this is a key question. If for example you wanted a Florida orange 500 years ago, where would you have gotten it from? I am not saying that oranges are bad but it does begin the question regarding the quantity and type of fruit people in the UK should eat. I often joke with clients “If bananas are good for you, then where are the banana trees?” This evokes the age old question about seasonal and local produce. This is the first point to make about fruit consumption.

What Fruits Are UK Based? Here are some of the fruits grown in the UK, Apples, pears, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, plums, damsons, rhubarb, peach, grapes, blackberries & redcurrants. As you can see, there are some common fruits that are native to this Country and they are mainly apples, pears and berries. This should help you to understand which fruits you are potentially more suitable for UK people (based on history)

is quite significant. This should make us just a little suspicious! Quick disclaimer, I am not saying that apples are bad here, just remember the point about necessity

Fruit Juices & Food Marketing The fruit is healthy/essential thing causes another problem. Which is the sales and marketing of fruit juices and smoothies what tends to happen is that fruit is believed to be healthy so fruit juices must be healthy, right? Perhaps not! If you look at an orange for example, place a fresh orange on the window sill and see how long this lasts for. Some smoothies have sell by dates that are a year in the future? The reason for the difference is the removal of fibre. Fibre is what keeps you full when you eat and stops you eating more. If you can’t stop eating or drinking, then guess what? You will eat and drink more! So potentially, if I am trying to sell you a product, a) I want to make that product last as long as possible to avoid losing money and b) I want to make you drink and then buy more. Based on this point, if you think about it, when would you ever eat the amount of fruit that some of these smoothies contain? Some of them have like 1 banana, 10 grapes, 1 apple and so on, during no point in human evolution would we have ever eaten that much fruit in one go. Then there is the sugar content!

Apples

Conclusion

“An apple a day, keeps the Doctor away” is the phrase we use and to be honest, an apple a day is ok. The potential challenge with apples is the pesticides they are sprayed with and also the fact that they are only in season from around August until October in this Country. This would mean that any other time of year, the apples may not be as fresh and potentially they have been “modified” By this I mean that the difference between a shiny granny smith from the supermarket and an English cox taken from a tree

When it comes to fruit consumption, fruit is better than chocolate or biscuits for sure. However if you’re hitting a stumbling block with your weight loss then I would recommend looking at which fruit you are eating and maybe replace some of it with fat or protein.

Dales Directories Jobs in the Garden

On your plot ‐ April showers to October fun! Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot.

Jobs for April:•Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants. •Harden off indoor sowings before planting out. •Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover. Fancy something a bit more exotic? •Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel. •Plant an asparagus bed. •Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear.

30

It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves. Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that

are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow. Its wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

With Jonathan Needham Hello I’m Jonathan Needham of Jam Landscapes, and over the coming months I will be giving you handy hints and tips on how to make the most out of your garden, from patios to pergolas and lawns to borders. So let’s get gardening! Generations of gardeners have toiled, working the soil in pursuit of the perfect bloom or the prize vegetable. Some have had success and great productivity where others have been less fortunate and one thing is true for all, time effort and determination is never lacking. People who garden for use, seem to be far outnumbered by those who choose to relax in modern designs, however the demand for fresh organic produce drives the new age horticulturists to have a go at the planting side of things. It is more refreshing to find that vegetable plots and more noticeably herb beds are in vogue again. As far as herbs are concerned I think people don’t want dried flakes in glass jars anymore, they want the texture, smell and juicy freshness of the real thing. It is strongly believed that herbs have been harvested by our ancestors for many thousands of years.

Strangely enough it is the use of herbs in cooking that seems to be untraceable until fairly modern times. There is no doubt that herbs have a great many other uses with physicians from ancient China to the Empire of Rome claiming to cure many illnesses with plants grown, collected prepared and administered. Herbalistic methods still survive and thrive in modern medicine such as the power of these often overlooked little gems. Outdoor living and cooking is definitely on the increase and barbeque rules, except it seems in June if the last two years are anything to go by! If you are one of the many choosing outdoor cuisine, I strongly recommend having a go at growing herbs, such as Thyme, Oregano, Sage and Basil to flavour meat or Chives and Nasturtium to toss in salad . Prepare your soil to a fine tilth incorporating plenty of sharp sand and gravel for drainage. Add a small amount of feed for an early boost and then plant your small pots of herbs straight in . Herbs are easy to grow, are not demanding and you prune as you cook. Go on have a go and taste the difference! Go on have a free consultation call Jonathan at Jam Landscapes on 07909 842492 or 01773 825825.
