BookReview Matt Haig- Reasons To Stay Alive By Emily Eaton- Cool River Café Due to personal experiences, I became increasingly interested and aware of mental health issues and the concept of self-care. I trained to be a Mental Health First Aider, through Mental Health England. This was when I first came across Matt Haig’s book Reasons to Stay Alive. With one in five people now suffering with depression at some point in their life and the recent loss of several people in the public eye due to some form of mental illness, Matt Haig’s book is such a timely publication and an, almost poetic, transcript of one man’s struggle in crisis and how he fought back against depression. Not such a self-help book and it is definitely not just a simple story. It unapologetically pulls the reader in to a world that many will be familiar with. Without asking for sympathy or hero status, Matt pin points to the

www.dbhomecomputerrepairs.co.uk reader what helped him overcome crisis and gives hope to those that find themselves in a crisis of there own. Beginning as a self-professed party boy, Matt discusses how he lived a glamorous life whilst working out in Ibiza. It was whilst out there he was suddenly found himself facing The Black Dog. The same Black Dog, that is a close friend of many of us. By the time he returned home from Ibiza, it was paralyzing, and even the thought of nipping out of the house was too much. Matt goes on to discuss the ways in which he managed to overcome this depression and find ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’. For what is still a difficult topic to discuss, Matt puts into words, (and rather few words as the book is only 200 pages long), what many are thinking and feeling and he says it for them all. I would recommend this book to anyone who is after a little bit of comfort that ‘it’s ok to not be ok’ and that ‘time heals’.

Getting Rid of Bad Habits! We human beings are creatures of habit…. how we LOVE the familiar and repeating behaviour makes it known and expected…. familiar. Repetition is the building block for creating any habit, good, bad or indifferent. If you are or have previously been a smoker, it wasn’t the very first cigarette that got you hooked, but it probably didn’t take too long before it became a habit. In part that’s because smoking has a high pattern of repetition - something you might do 10 times a day or 20 as opposed to a habit like brushing your teeth, that most of us only indulge in twice a day. Habits are formed, by repetition like a track through a field - the first time someone walks through, the grass springs back, leaving no sign that anyone’s been there … but look at that same field after the same path has been walked 20 times and it becomes easy to follow. We are drawn to these established tracks just like the neural pathways created in our brains by repeating tasks or behaviours until they feel

‘automatic’. So all habits are learned patterns which have become automatic or unconscious and the good news is that if you want them to, they CAN change. Unhelpful habits move us further away from what we say we want and helpful ones closer towards it. Unpicking habits or creating new ones can be quite an art, but it’s always possible if you have the motivation to go through unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable territory to get there.

‘fear of loss’ as opposed to ‘desire for gain’. And that’s why I primarily see people in my practice who want to be rid of unwanted habits… habits like overthinking and worry, fears and phobias: things that are having unwanted consequences in their lives. Let’s say you’re afraid of frogs… and you live in a town in an apartment; that phobia is unlikely to have much impact on you. You might not like it, but you’re very unlikely to be motivated to sort it out are you? But what if you’re desperate to become a zoo keeper and the only opening is in the Amphibian House? There’s your ‘burning platform’ right there… and suddenly the motivation is there to overcome the fear.

And motivation to make any change is fuelled by benefits and consequences - what do I stand to gain if I stop doing this habit or adopt this other one? And what are the consequences if I don’t make this change? The truth is that it’s these consequences that drive our behaviour in a So if you want to change your much more powerful way habits, the very first place to than any perceived gains. start is to find your ‘why?’. This is commonly known as

Dales Directories Health & Well Being

This week I had the pleasure of trying out a Reflexology treatment with Laura at Sunstone Massage Therapies. Reflexology is based on the theory that different points on the feet correspond to different areas of the body. By working on these pressure points it is believed to aid relaxation, help improve well-being and mindfulness. I tested it out for myself so here are my thoughts. Laura Kirk, the owner of Sunstone Massage Therapies made me feel very relaxed and welcome straight away. At the start of the treatment Laura took information about my general health and history, medication and a bit about any aches and pains that I was worried about. After going over my health history together she talked through the steps of the treatment so I could get a clearer understanding of what it was about. Once the treatment began I instantly loved it. It started with general massage on the feet, which relaxed me to the point of sleep. Then the reflexology treatment began and the only way I can describe the feeling is to say it’s like a slowed down massage, that for me made me feel really relaxed, more so than I ever have before. The pressure points sometimes made my nerves flinch, this usually means that she’s found and area of my body that may be causing me problems. All in all it was definitely something I would go back and have again.

It is one of those things though, that you need to try for yourself because obviously everyone is different. If like me you have anxiety or just feel extremely tense then go and check it out. I would recommend this as a treat for yourself, so turn your phone off for an hour and be completely at one with yourself, your body and mind, it was certainly powerful for me. Sometimes we need to just give ourselves that break and this is a great way to do it. If you can completely shut off, wind down and enjoy the experience it will be amazing for you, just like it was for me. Now is the perfect time to book yourself an appointment with your local specialist, enjoy!

Sunstone Massage Therapies also offers: Full Body Massage Hot Stones Massage Indian Head Massage *Aromatherapy Massage * They can also offer Aromatherapy Prescription, where an individual aromatherapy remedy will be blended to suit your needs.

COMPUTER TIP Handling SPAM Email Spam is the bane of all email and I’m often asked how can you control it? If you are using Gmail as your email provider then you already have a fairly good spam filter. Other providers provide similar offerings of variable quality but if you’re downloading email with something like Thunderbird then you can take control yourself. Spamihilator is a very useful utility which will examine your email and allow you to ‘teach’ it what is good and bad. You can block or always allow emails from specified individuals or even organisations. It’s versatile but it does require setting up and training because what is spam for one person isn’t always spam for another. More details on facebook or the website.

How on earth does a loving parent recognise that their child is not reaching their full potential when it took Jo years to acquire the skills to do so, as a head teacher and Kip tutor? Talking to Jo Linthwaite of Kip McGrath is an enlightening experience. She understands child educational development to an incredible degree. She says that recognising a child’s educational needs and any gaps is complex and fraught with difficulty for a parent to identify when intervention could be beneficial. Especially if the child is actually not causing concern to classroom teachers with their progress and they are at the younger end of their educational journey. She says: Issues actually start in Reception and years 1 & 2 and are frequently missed by both teachers and parents. A child with mid achievement levels or even just below the top achievement levels is not a worry to a teacher. If parents see that at home the child achieves more, they are often reassured by teachers that ‘all children develop at different rates’, so not to worry. That is true, but each child should be constantly developing their language and maths skills. However, if a parent feels they are not progressing, it is precisely at this time in the educational journey that parents should be extra vigilant. Realistically if children have not got a deep enough understanding at this stage, then tiny gaps begin to develop. Maybe they miss a couple of key word blends or a maths lesson or two where number concepts for multiplication are being covered. A small hole appears. By year 3 or 4 if you think they have not made the progress you had expected, either due to SATS, teacher parent discussions, or your knowledge of your child, then it is getting critical to start to fill in some knowledge gaps in their Maths or English

before secondary school is closer. A child with gaps will begin to struggle by year 4. They will believe themselves useless at something and start to disengage or settle for a lower level of work. If they don’t have all the vocabulary or number comprehension they can’t be so fluent in writing or maths. One sign is they work more slowly trying to get it right and maybe stay in to finish work at break times. Children don’t like telling parents they miss some break time for work because they think their parents will be upset or disappointed … and so the downward spiral continues in their self-confidence and improvement. We are not talking about the lower achievers here but those in the middle levels, who are not a worry to the classroom teachers. Good children, nice children, well behaved children with lots of friends…sound familiar? If this could be your child we are describing, then you can ask a few careful questions about playtime, check that homework doesn’t include ‘for those who haven’t finished, finish it at home ‘ Don’t interrogate them, just be interested and listen! If you still have doubts, then take them to Jo for an assessment. She will be able to tell you immediately if there are any little gaps, isolated gaps or big understanding gaps. It may take only a couple of targeted lessons to move them on confidently. Time rectifying gaps now means greater results further down the line in exams. She has a summer school that could help as well!

Call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 for an assessment now!

STANEDGE GOLF CLUB OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR PLAY Stanedge Golf Club is OPEN to the public for Play under new ownership of Fame Tate, PGA Professional and former Ladies European and Asian Tour player. Fame is delighted to have acquired the 9 hole moorland course situated between Matlock and Chesterfield and is looking forward to driving the club into the future and opening up opportunities for more people to play and get into golf. Since taking over the club in March 2019 Fame and her team have totally transformed the place from a run down clubhouse and golf course in need of some TLC to a thriving facility which now sees over 50 players of all ages and gender coming to the club on Wednesday nights for the clubs 6@6 golf league. Fame set out a vision to make Stanedge Golf Club an accessible, warm and welcoming place where people of all ages, gender and backgrounds can come enjoy having FUN playing the golf course and socializing in the Clubhouse. It has not been easy and Fame is quick to acknowledge the role her small team have played in making this happen. Commenting on the journey so far, Fame said, “ The resurrection of Stanedge Golf Club has not been easy, it really has been a monumental effort by many people who have put many unsociable hours into making the club a place people now want to visit and enjoy benefits the club has to offer”. “Since we acquired the club in February we have attracted over 80 new members and many visitors in response to our various offers, with different groups getting involved in our coaching and learn to play offers. It has been so rewarding seeing people of all ages, gender and backgrounds coming up to the club, socializing and enjoying their time.” In explaining the outline plans for the club Fame commented: “We want to make Stanedge Golf Club a place where people feel welcome and relaxed so they may enjoy

their time with us. For those who would like membership we have some fantastic introductory offers such as Family Membership (Husband, Wife & Children U17) for £950, for a family of four this equates to less than £20 per month per individual.” “We are also keen to grow Junior golf and introduce young players to the game, at £50 per year this is less than £1 per week, I am not sure where you can get full access to sports facilities with no restrictions at that price anywhere else?” “We will also be running regular coaching sessions for all abilities and in particular for those new to the game through our Get into Golf programme.” Stanedge Golf Club has some great benefits, as well as being accessible and affordable, it aims to be family focused, friendly and a fun place to be. Fame is looking forward to building on this and driving the club forward on what is a bright and exciting journey. The club recently hosted the Derbyshire Golf Futures Tours which saw over 40 young players from all over Derbyshire visit the club and test their skills over the course, the feedback we received was extremely positive with all having a great experience. A round of 9 holes at Stanedge should not take more than a couple of hours and if you have time to spare afterwards you can drop into the clubhouse for refreshments, where there is a fully licensed bar and food served daily. Located in the beautiful Peak District of Derbyshire, Stanedge Golf Course provides idyllic and sensational views stretching over four counties. A beautiful and well maintained moorland/parkland course with one of the most relaxed and welcoming clubhouses in the area. The course suits all levels of ability with an engaging and varied test of golf, with three par 3's, six par 4's and one par 5.

We will develop a very inclusive and open policy, allowing people to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed whilst enjoying their experience at Stanedge Golf Club either on the course, in the clubhouse or learning to play the game with the help of our PGA professional staff.” The club have several initiatives planned to celebrate the new approach, which include FREE LEARN GOLF IN A DAY coaching programme for all ages and gender.
