What a year it has been! First we had the Queens Diamond Jubilee followed by the Olympics & Paralympics where team GB did us proud and our nation came together for a tremendous display of national pride. The glow from the “Jubilympics” should keep us all warm as winter takes hold. Now as we settle down and prepare for Christmas and the year ahead, The Dales Directory hope to provide you with lots of great features and puzzles to keep you occupied over the winter season. With all the controversy over the recent new recycling bins, we've published a very useful article about Composting for Beginners for those that would like to have a go. There are two interesting articles about your Home Security and another one about the lovely Willersley Castle Hotel in Cromford. If you’re out and about over the Christmas & New year Holiday and have been celebrating a bit too enthusiastically you may find the advice on Tips for Copying with a Hangover useful! There’s also some sensible advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) about not getting into debt this Christmas. The CAB help people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice, and by influencing policymakers. I love to get out walking whenever I can, and I intend to do lots of miles over the Christmas period. If you’re a keen walker and need some inspiration why not try one of the many walks that Angela Clarke from Peak Walker has put together for us. Let me take this opportunity to wish all my readers and their families a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

On 21 December the European Court of Justice gender equalisation ruling gains the full force of law. From that date, insurers aren’t permitted to discriminate by offering different prices based on whether someone is a man or woman – gender is no longer a factor. So, all other things being equal, you’d pay the same.
If there are costs to cancelling, then it’s a punt as to whether it’s worth it or not - there are no hard or fast rules here. The best thing is try to find a better value policy than you currently have that can cover these early leaving fees. How to find the ve ry che a pe st de a l

TO YS Buxton Pavillion Gardens Model Boat Club By Andy Cope
When I discovered a childhood radio control toy car in my parents loft a couple of years back, I didn’t envisage the path it would lead me on. To my surprise, vintage spare parts for the toy were still available some 30 years on, so I set about renovating my ‘Kyosho Optima’ car, and in the process, became addicted to all things radio controlled. Some twenty cars, a plane and two helicopters later, I started looking for new modes of RC transport to exploit, and soon discovered the addictive world of model boats!
sites in Derbyshire. As a result, the club is rapidly attracting members from far and wide, and has even poached members from other more established clubs! Better still, the existing members are very friendly and helpful, and new members of all ages and abilities are assured a very warm welcome.
Now I know what you’re thinking, this all sounds well and good, but I bet it’s a difficult and expensive hobby, requiring loads of skill, time and effort, best suited to a retired marine engineer with a big shed. Private Functions & Events When organising an event or function, you want to make sure it’s a great success and a memorable occasion. Whether you’re planning a family celebration, anniversary or special birthday, Willersley Castle is a great venue for the perfect day.
Wedding Receptions
Set in 60 acres of magnificent grounds over looking the Derwent Valley, Willersley Castle Hotel is the perfect venue for Wedding Receptions, Private Functions, and Conferences. This beautiful building was commissioned by Sir Richard Arkwright in the 1790’s; he was an entrepreneur credited as being the ‘father’ of the industrial revolution, who made his fortune by combining water powered machinery and semi skilled labour to create mass produced yarn. Unfortunately he died before the house was finished but his son Richard lived there with his family, followed by his descendents who lived there until 1922. In 1927 the estate was bought by a group of Methodist businessmen who opened it in 1928 as a Methodist Guild Holiday Centre. Apart from being a maternity centre during the 2nd World War, Willersley Castle Hotel has operated as a Christian Guild Hotel ever since. But over the last few years the Hotel has been opened up to lots more groups of people. Accommodation is available for up to 86 guests (all en-suite) and there are attractively furnished function rooms that can accommodate 5 - 100 people depending on the layout required.
Not only is Willersley Castle a fabulous setting for your special day, they can also offer exclusive use for those bridal couples who have a minimum of 60 for the daytime and 100 for the evening reception. With its 40 en-suite bedrooms your guests won’t have to worry about taxi charges with wedding guests being offered preferential rates, this could really be your ideal reception venue! Non- exclusivity is available too, events coordinator Sharon Regan would be happy to discuss various options with you.
Groups & Conferences Finding an ideal location to hold a conference or retreat from 5 - 100 people where they’ll be no distractions can be difficult. Willersley Castle Hotel can provide conference equipment, refreshments and buffets. Not many people know that the hotel is open to the public, so please pop in and say hello it's a lovely place to have coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or a three course evening meal. It’s Time To Make That will A cautionary tale …….. Fred and Joan were happily married for 59 years. They jointly owned their house so when Fred passed away, the house belonged 100% to Joan. All was well until Joan’s health failed and she needed to go into a Nursing Home. As Joan owned the house ‘lock, stock and barrel’, the local authority were able to step in and force the sale of the property to pay for long term care. As time went on, the money disappeared and their son was left with virtually nothing. It could have been so different with a simple change to their Wills …. If Fred and Joan had owned their house as ‘tenants in common’ instead of ‘joint tenants’, when Fred died his 50% share would have gone into a Trust. Jean could continue to live there as she owned 50% also, but when she went into a Home the local authority could not force the sale as she only owned half. Eventually her son would benefit, as his parents had wished. You must make this kind of Will when you are both alive and of sound mind – so don’t put it off! Computer Tip Life beyond the mouse Sometimes I get a call from a client saying that their mouse has stopped working and now they can’t do anything – not even closedown the computer! Well, you can and it’s really worthwhile for you to learn a little simple control of your PC using the keyboard. First press the ‘Windows’ key. It has a picture of the windows logo on it (maybe it says ‘start’) and is probably at the bottom left of your keyboard. This is the same as clicking on the ‘start’ button. Now use the cursor keys (those 4 arrow keys) and you’ll find you can move around and select items with the enter key or cancel things with the escape key. Experiment moving around with cursor keys and the tab key. Most things CAN be done without a mouse!

Transform Your Life & Live That Dream! Change your life for the better– Do you feel there is something stopping you from moving forward with your life? Do you feel that you have blocks and limitations to happiness and health? Well maybe Jane Kelly from Live The Dream can help.
Being fairly new to the area Jane contacted me a few months ago and explained about what she does and offered me a complimentary coaching session at her office in Ashover; which I accepted. She then suggested that before the appointment I come up with a goal or one thing that I want to change about my life. I decided that my goal was to lose weight, which I’m sure many of you can identify with. So back in August I went to see Jane in her lovely home/office. We chatted at first about the goal I had set and she explained what Human Potential Coaching (HPC) is all about. Basically Jane told me “HPC is about accessing your true inner self; for example you know when you’ve set yourself a goal in the past and for some reason or other you never achieve that goal despite trying your best to make it happen, well the reason you keep failing is because your heart really wasn’t in it, your head was telling you one thing and your heart another”. Jane then went onto explain about the techniques she uses to tune into the real reason behind the goal that you set for yourself, trying to find what’s inside you and what you’re really meant to do and be. After the session finished it turned out that the original goal I went to see Jane about (losing weight) wasn’t the goal I wanted to achieve at all, it was all about me
achieving more ‘me’ time in my day, and remaining healthy and active so I can live the life I’m enjoying now well into my old age. To help me achieve this goal Jane offered email support and encouraged me to write my ‘true goal’ on a piece of paper and look at it regularly “I commit to 30 minutes to myself everyday”. That was three months ago now and I’ve still got that note on my desk and I do commit to 30 minutes ‘me’ time every day; everyday I try and fit in some form of exercise or I read a good book or practice meditation, Since seeing Jane back in August I feel so much better, and as an added bonus I’ve also lost weight as well! As well as one-to-one coaching Jane also runs workshops and a weekly group in Matlock called “Space to Be”. If you would like to talk to Jane please call 07788 428093 or email jane.kelly@livethedream.uk.com. You can find more details on all Jane’s work on her website www.livethedream.uk.com.
Special offer for Dales Directory readers! £15 off a one-to-one coaching session if taken before 31/3/13.

CO ACH Banish the hangover
Did you wake up with a throbbing headache, a general feeling of physical misery, a tiger in your bathroom and a bit of left over turkey stuck somewhere on your shirt? Before you choose to finish that cold turkey or opt for the Bloody Mary, try these tips instead: Rehydrate Alcohol is a diuretic – a chemical that kicks your urinary system into overdrive, and unless you managed to alternate your alcoholic beverages with water in between (which never works does it?), your postdrinking symptoms are most likely due to dehydration. Rehydrating is key when it comes to recovering from a hangover and cannot be stressed enough. But I’m not talking coffee, Red Bull or hair-of-the- dog here. Caffeine is an acknowledged stimulant, and while you might hope caffeine can perform its miracles of giving some much needed focus and alertness, it’s another diuretic. Red Bull isn’t much better (and requires another column), and choosing the hair-of-the- dog option would only be advisable if you want to pass out to forget what you’ve done the night before. Coffee will not help your stomach either, so the best option is water at room temperature. You may add some fresh lemon or fresh orange juice to give you additional Vitamin C for energy, and for soothing your upset tummy.
also contain magnesium, which helps to relax pounding blood vessels in your head. Have a banana on toasted wholegrain bread (for the carbohydrates and B-Vitamins) with organic peanut or almond butter (great sources of magnesium and protein), and you get a good dose of all those key minerals and vitamins you lost the night before. Drinking vegetable bouillon soup or coconut water are two other good sources of vitamins and minerals, and easy for a fragile stomach to digest. Eat Do eat. Yes, it might be the last thing you want to do, but you will feel a lot better the minute you get your blood sugar levels up after having had some food. There is no oneand-only hangover food cure, but you can’t beat a good fry-up. It gives you the greasy fat to coat your stomach, and the bread and eggs will give you the carbohydrates and protein for energy and blood sugar support. All I can say there is no perfect food cure for a hangover, so if you’ve found one that works for you, stick to it. My advice, though, would be to opt for a well- balanced meal, including all groups of macronutrients: complex carbohydrate, lean protein and healthy unsaturated fats. A toasted wholegrain bagel with cream cheese and salmon is another good option, and so is porridge with natural yoghurt and strawberries, giving you enough fibre for blood sugar balance, selenium to boost liver function, and Vitamin C for energy and soothing your tummy. Sleep But for the best cure of all (and if you have the luxury of not having to get up), go back to bed after your breakfast and sleep it off!
Top Up When you drink excessively, you lose a lot of key minerals and vitamins including potassium, magnesium and B-Vitamins, all of which need to be topped up. Bananas are a great hangover food; they are like nature’s own little hangover cures. Not only are they The Nutrition Coach full of fructose (natural fruit sugar) to help www.th e n u tritio n co a ch .co .u k with energy, they contain a nice amount of potassium. www.bsafesecuritysolutions.co.uk ~ We’ve been in business for 26 yrs Security Remains Biggest Concern For Home Owners Recent research from GoCompare.com has revealed that 51% of householders in the UK are worried that their homes will be broken into. Also did you know that burglary rates rise by approximately 23% during the winter months. & 58% of burglaries take place in the evening or night and 34% occur at the weekend. What crime prevention measures will you be taking this winter? We’re very lucky here in the Derbyshire Dales to have relatively low crime rates. We’re still vulnerable though, as according to the *UKcrimestats web site there were eighteen burglaries in the Matlock area over the September & October period in 2011; trend that you don’t want repeating. Burglary by and large is an opportunistic crime, but there is a lot you can do to make the burglar look else where for easy pickings. Burglars are looking for a home that gives them the easiest way of committing their crime undetected, with the fewest obstacles to negotiate. Staggeringly two out of ten burglars do not need to use force to gain entry and
three out of ten get in through a back window! Although there are many things you can do to deter a burglar, B Safe offices on Dale Road back in 1986 having a burglar alarm fitted and using it is probably one of the the most effective. If you’re at all worried B Safe Security Solutions Ltd, who originally had offices here in Matlock and know the area very well would love to help. Phil Ball from B Safe could do a home visit and provide you with a free review of your present security situation. So If you’ve ‘inherited’ a home or business security system that doesn’t seem to be working or you don’t have a system or your present security system is outdated and hasn’t been serviced regularly then B Safe can help. Dales Directories Walk
The Dragon’s Back Start: Lay-by outside Earl Sterndale church (SK 0902 6704) Route: Earl Sterndale - High Wheeldon - Glutton Bridge Parkhouse Hill (optional) - Chrome Hill - Dowel Dale Earl Sterndale Maps: Explorer OL 24: The Peak District White Peak Area Distance: 6.5 miles Terrain: Good paths and quiet lanes. Three or four short but steep climbs with a descent down a narrow ridge path. Refreshments: The Quiet Woman pub in Earl Sterndale Toilets: None
Dowel Dale Take the second footpath sign on the right, which is just before a drive and cross the wooden stile. Continue straight ahead across the field, with the wall on your left, to a gate. Having gone through the gate follow the obvious path uphill to soon reach the trig point on the summit of High Wheeldon from where you are rewarded with extensive views. South your view of the Upper Dove Valley stretches down towards Pilsbury, whilst to the north two of the Peak District’s most distinctive peaks Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill dominate the view.
This walk takes you along one of the most distinctive hills in the Peak District, Chrome Hill, which is also known as the Dragon’s Back. Although much of the route is on roads they are usually very quiet and on most of them you are unlikely to meet any vehicles. The walk starts from the lay-by outside the church in Earl Sterndale, which is opposite The Quiet Woman pub. Facing the pub turn left along the road in the direction of Crowdencote. When the road splits take the road on the left. Follow the road for approximately threequarters of a mile with your first summit of the day High Wheeldon dominating your view on the right. Although it looks steep from this angle by following this road you are reducing the amount of ascent you will need to do quite considerably.
28
Retrace your steps back down the hill to the gate but don’t go through it, instead turn left to head downhill, with the wall on your right, to eventually reach a stile onto the road. Turn left along the road and take the first lane on the right. Follow the lane as it swings right, passing a barn on the left, to go through a farmyard, which you exit via two gates. Continue straight on to reach a third gate into a walled lane. After passing through two further gates you pass a cottage on your left with an old water pump opposite it on your right. Continue straight ahead, passing through two further gates, to reach a road with a garage opposite you. You must now decide if you are doing Parkhouse Hill or not. Parkhouse Hill is the hill behind the garage. In making your decision please consider your ability to handle narrow ridges and exposure, as the descent from the hill is along a very narrow and steep ridge which
DalesDirectoryOnline.co.uk
Dales Directories Walk although not high is challenging. Do not attempt it if you cannot handle exposure. If you wish to do Parkhouse Hill turn right up the road and just below the foot of Parkhouse Hill take the gate on the left. Ascend the hill and then follow the obvious track down the ridge to reach the valley floor next to Sugarloaf. If you don’t wish to climb Parkhouse Hill cross the road, turn left and take the road on the right, just after an old red phone box. When the road splits bear right to pass by the rock outcrop at the foot of Parkhouse Hill known as Sugarloaf. Just in front of the cattle grid take the stile on the left and follow the obvious path around and up the left-hand side of the hill. Cross the stile, which is roughly a third of the way up the hill and continue to climb steeply to the summit. However do make sure you take regular stops to admire the view behind you of Parkhouse Hill and the Upper Dove Valley. From the summit your view to the west extends across to Oliver Hill, Turn Edge with Axe Edge also visible across Hollins Hill. Despite the long ranging views perhaps the most impressive view is the one of the ridge you are about to walk down where the bumps and lumps give you a clue as to why this hill is nicknamed the Dragon’s Back. The route down the ridge is quite obvious, and despite initial appearances is quite safe, although on some rocky sections you might need to resort to using your hands. Follow the obvious track as it winds in and out of the limestone outcrops but keep your eye out for the natural limestone arch to the right of the path. As you near the bottom of the hill the path levels out to run next to a wall on your right. Follow the path as it swings left downhill to reach a gate in the bottom right-hand corner of the field. Continue straight ahead, crossing a wooden bridge, to a wooden stile. Cross the stile then turn right to head steeply uphill with the limestone outcrop Tor Rock to your left. As you ascend the hill Chrome Hill comes back into view and from this angle you can truly appreciate why it has acquired its nickname. As you approach the brow of the hill bear diagonally left to a post directing you to the corner of the field. Cross the broken wall
Looking across Hollins Hill to Axe Edge from Chrome Hill's summit
and continue straight ahead, with the wall on your right, passing through two gates to reach the farm track. Turn right along the farm track to the road and then right along the road, where after crossing two cattle grids you enter the delightful Dowel Dale. As you head down the dale lookout for the footpath sign of the left, pass through the gate and follow the footpath on the right climbing up the dale’s side to a gate. Do pause here to admire the view back up the dale and across to Chrome Hill. Your route is straight ahead, in the direction of the village, but it is worth diverting off to the right of the field to admire the view of Parkhouse Hill, where from this angle it looks a far greater challenge than it did from Glutton Bridge. After heading straight across the field you reach a gate, go through it and then take the gate immediately on your right onto a track. Turn left and follow the track downhill, passing through two more gates, to reach the road. Turn right along the road and at the crossroads continue straight ahead to soon find yourself back next to the Quiet Woman Pub and its distinctive sign. According to folklore the sign recalls the time the landlord chopped off his wife’s head for nagging him too much, but don’t hold that against the current landlord.

GUIDE Composting No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. These days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use?
Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. building your own bin, it’s best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. you just put in grass cuttings you’ll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really
woody stems) and even cardboard. weeds can go in as long as they haven’t gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. crushed eggshells, used tea bags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings and keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerant's from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. , what do you imagine our ancestors used?
