BookReview SARAH MILLICAN, HOW TO BE CHAMPION

By Emily Eaton- Cool River Café After having a lovely evening seeing Sarah Millican during her stand-up tour, I couldn’t wait to sit and read this book. Her book did not disappoint. I dove in with high expectations. Just like her stand-up, this book was something funny, full of embarrassing anecdotes and life lessons but always with an underlying sombre tone. Much of the book is a traditional autobiography. Each chapter tends to have a theme, such as how to be a comedian, why she doesn't want kids, and so on. I found the short chapters quite refreshing as it made them simple and easy to read. Sarah goes seamlessly from detailing her life at childhood and coping with those nasty bullies at school (something the majority of us can relate), to the present and dealing with the media and

online trolls. As you will find from the book, Sarah has worked very hard and is a very inspiring lady. She’s in a place where she is very happy with herself and therefore these bullies, trolls and the media are irrelevant. She advocates being happy in your own world, which is all anyone can ask for really. Sarah’s own voice is really prominent in the text of this book. It's impossible to read it and not hear her narrating to you, as if she were stood up on stage in front of you that very moment. She definitely has a rare gift of being able to be smutty without being offensive, and definitely candid but without being hurtful-much like her stand-up. Be you a fan of Sarah’s or not, this book is a fun, easy read and one I highly recommend. *Copies of Sarah’s book can be brought from Cool River Café, Matlock*

Dales Directories Health & Well Being

Under Pressure “We can easily manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday’s burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it.” So wrote John Newton (1725-1807), author of the iconic hymn Amazing Grace, Anglican clergyman and former slave ship master who was hugely influential in ending the slave trade. As a modern day therapist with the benefit of many centuries of research since Newton’s time, I can only say ‘amen’ to his insightful observation of what we nowadays may call ‘stress overload’. Stress gets a bad rap… it gets blamed for all kinds of things (often rightly so, to be fair!). Stress is pressure and pressure is not in itself a bad thing without pressure or need, some of us may never get out of bed! The pressure to hunt and find food, to find shelter, is what enabled the human race to survive… if Ugg the caveman spent all of his day sitting under a tree meditating then you and I wouldn’t be here to have this conversation. So when does stress or pressure become harmful? We do know that too much stress can make us ill, worsen illnesses we may already have or just plain make us miserable and overwhelmed. Whatever your lifestyle you won’t be immune the pressure of our responsibilities .. stress from health.. work .. relationships … finances, most of us have a complex mix of all of these. So how much is too much? Newton gave us a really good starting point… dragging our old ‘stuff’ into the fresh pressures of today, start’s us off at a disadvantage. I often use the analogy of a radio with a set bandwidth - we have so much capacity and when

it’s full it’s full and we literally cannot take anything else. The stresses of yesterday can look as big as childhood trauma that has damaged our view of ourselves and the world around us, leaving us feeling unsafe: perpetually stuck in ‘fight or flight’ mode… and as ‘small’ as ruminating or worrying over events that are in the past. And so we have the old stresses, added to the ones that were generated today and like the cherry on the cake, we can often add in ‘the stress that is yet to come’ - worrying in “what if?” terms about things that have not yet happened. That’s how our bandwidth can fill up, leaving us no capacity to deal wth the unexpected or generally leaving us feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope. Dealing with difficulties from the past and learning to live more in the moment is something that can be learned. In September in conjunction with my colleague Priscilla So at So Healthy I ran the UK’s first HeartSpeak Lite workshop in Matlock to teach people a quick and simple version of the primary therapeutic technique I use. There’s another opportunity coming up in February to become your own ‘stress-buster’. However you choose to manage the pressures of life, begin with the awareness of how much belongs to today… how much to yesterday (the old stuff) and then notice how much you’re choosing to indulge in before it even happens.

Learn To Reduce Stress Workshop is in Matlock on February 8th 2020, contact Sarah Kallend by email for more information sarah@sarahkallend.com

Sarah is an Associate Therapist at So Healthy Chiropractors in Matlock, dealing with emotional health and behavioural change. She is based at Ogston Reservoir as well as seeing people in their own homes. Find her at www.sarahkallend.com or on Facebook @theheartspeaker

its Opening doors soon will be Scoop, the new zero waste shop right in the of heart Wirksworth, in former the W e s t o n ’ s electrical shop at 26 Market Place.

Belinda added, “This is a new concept based on an old principle, that of not being wasteful - something that was engrained in me by my grandmother.”

The shop will offer a wide range of packaging-free products aimed at reducing waste.

That’s why the role Scoop can play in the community is equally important to their ethos; the shop will have seating so that people can stop by for a chat and between ideas share hopefully generations.

Customers will be able to refill containers including their own with a large range of food, household cleaning and personal care products from modern wall dispensers alongside smaller containers with scoops. There will even be a peanut butter making machine!

Sarah explained that Scoop, and the wider zero-waste movement, is about a shift in how people do things. This means not only changing shopping habits around packaging but changing where people shop and the shopping experience as a whole.

“We want everyone to feel welcome,” they added.

Behind Scoop are Wirksworth residents Sarah Cumberland and Belinda Wilkins, keen to offer a viable alternative to out of town supermarkets so that customers are able to buy products locally, at reasonable prices and a convenient time. They believe Scoop will complement the range of great existing local businesses and benefit the town. “Shopping locally and with less packaging is at the heart of Scoop. It’s not just a benefit for the environment but also an opportunity for people in the community to stop and have a natter about all things great and small,” said Sarah.

COMPUTER TIP Registry Backups Once upon a time Windows used to create an automatic backup of the registry. The registry is simply a collection of files and if the worst came to the worst and the computer wouldn’t boot it was sometimes possible to restore the registry and get back a working system. This feature was removed in the 1803 version of Windows10, with the claim that it was to save space, although the registry isn’t actually that big. It is possible and, in my view, desirable to turn this back on with a registry tweak though if you’re unsure about messing with the registry, you’re better leaving it well alone and call for help! More details, including the tweak can be found on facebook.com/callonken.

Don't Be Afraid to Replace Parts Inside Your Toilet Taking apart pipes under your sink or shower can lead to messy issues if you make a mistake. However, there's very little you can damage by trying to replace your toilet's flapper or your toilets cartridge. Worn flappers are a common cause of leaks between the cistern and the bowl, and they only cost a few pounds! As a bonus, the package comes with easy-to-follow instructions for replacement. Most modern cistern scan be repaired by replacing the entire interior with a new cartridge. This only requires that you remove a screw or two. So, if you hear the toilet running frequently, or your sink is dripping, get replacement parts and give it a go.

Sometimes it is self-belief not academic ability that can hold you back! When your child is not performing academically at school it is so easy to believe that they are just not academically gifted. You could possibly be quite wrong and what is preventing them from progressing is actually a low self-esteem or selfbelief in themselves, but how on earth can you deal with that? Well there are signs to look out for‌ Is your child shy, quiet and very worried about getting things wrong, to the point where they would do anything to avoid having a go if they thought they were going to make a mistake? How many times can a pencil fall on the floor and how many trips to the loo can one child make in a lesson?! At parents evening these might be things to ask about. This was the case with Rosie who came to Kip in October 2018. She was all these things and for her every error, every difficulty seemed like an insurmountable obstacle and her confidence and self-esteem were at rock bottom. She was definitely behind. Her free assessment showed her to be 2 years behind in reading, 3 years behind in spelling and 2 years behind in maths. It all added pressure to her self-belief. Her tutor, Sarah, put together an initial plan, just for Rosie, which took her learning needs and academic gaps into account. They began with looking at some of the spelling rules which, although not perfect, can help children learn to spot spelling patterns. In addition they worked on

basic arithmetic skills. As the weeks went by to Christmas, Rosie began to see for herself some patterns in spelling, reading and maths and her new but true character began to emerge. She smiled as she came in each week. She greeted other students in the room and offered to help new students on their first visit telling them how much it had helped her and how lovely the tutors were. During the spring term she began to understand that getting things wrong is encouraged, as it means you make more progress towards getting things right. Rosie was no longer off to the loo each lesson or distracting herself from working as she loved her progress towards her goals. A new Rosie appeared by the summer term, one who was joining in sports at school, going on camping trips, and tackling new challenges with excitement and a positive attitude. What a transformation! By July 2019, Rosie was ready for her progress assessments. She was bubbling with excitement to see how far she had come and her face lit up when she saw her results‌Up 2 years in reading, up just over a year in spelling and up a year in maths – all in 8 months! Wonderful progress! She is still with us today and by next spring she will probably be past her age in reading, spelling and maths! Well done Rosie, (and Sarah her tutor of course!)

Peak Ballet At Peak Ballet, dancers of all ages leave classes feeling energised, stretched and toned. They walk a little taller, are more poised and often tell me their niggly back aches have gone and their spirits are lifted! Movement is undisputedly beneficial for our bodies and minds; moving our limbs to music, Lara Ross founder of Peak Ballet with Dame Darcey Bussell following short and then longer choreographed sequences of ballet steps is as much a brain workout as a challenge for the body. It keeps us young! All the adult classes at Peak Ballet are structured to incorporate learning the fundamentals of basic ballet technique whilst providing a fun way of keeping fit to inspiring and eclectic music. The benefits of learning ballet are endless but certainly include the toning of muscles and improvements in core strength, posture, flexibility and balance, not to mention using the old grey matter to literally think on your feet!

Silver Swans

create beautiful shapes, filling the music with movement. Peak Ballet’s Silver Swans tell me the classes are joyful and they love and cherish the opportunity to dance with no expectations or pressure. I have many Silver Swans who are completely new to ballet and many who have returned to this beautiful art form after long breaks. For all it is an escape, where they can be free to fly with like-minded members of our corps de ballet!

Children’s syllabus classes I originally trained and worked as a Secondary School teacher where I gained valuable experience in teaching, learning and classroom management. After a career break raising my three children and gaining further experience in Primary education, I went on to fulfil my aspiration to teach classical ballet. I graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance (one of the world’s most influential dance education organisations) as a registered teacher and founded Peak Ballet in 2017. Having combined a lifelong love of ballet with my teaching background, I am equipped with the skills to inspire and motivate each and every dancer to reach their full potential, regardless of age or ability. I believe in a fun and holistic approach that is informative and will support dancers gain many transferable skills. Peak Ballet’s children’s classes are inclusive, safe and a happy environment in which to learn ballet. Parents value the nurturing and caring quality I bring to my teaching.

Silver Swans classes are designed with the (slightly) older dancer in mind. Officially for the over 55s, there is no official lower age limit and definitely no upper one! The classes follow the format of a typical ballet lesson; warm up, barre, centre work and cool down, but we adapt steps If you would like to have a chat about Silver where necessary and miss out allegro - the Swans, children’s ballet classes or for further jumping element of class.
