Welcome to the February/March issue of The Dales Directory.

So far this winter’s been very mild, so I hope that our snowy Derbyshire scene on the front cover isn’t going to be a bad omen and bring the dreaded white stuff to our doorsteps! February/March is a busy time what with Valentines Day and Chinese New Year to celebrate, and of course Mother’s Day on the 30th March, I hope you’ve got lots of fun stuff planned.

If you’ve set any goals in January and your still on track you’re doing much better than about 80% of the population. Most people apparently only keep to their goals up until the 15�� January and then they go out the window. If you’ve set any Health & Fitness goals and are struggling, why don’t you check out Woodlands Fitness centre in Rowsley (page 2) I’m sure they can help you achieve them.

Exciting Changes Ahead!

We are pleased to announce some exciting changes coming to Carrick Veterinary Group in Matlock.

In January we started extending our consult hours at the Matlock surgery, we now have a vet available daily from 11.30 – 6.30, with appointments available throughout the day. This means we have more pre bookable appointments to help ensure you can get to us at a convenient time.

Help your child or grandchild with their Maths this month (Courtesy of Jo at Kip McGrath)

Maths can be quite daunting for some children when they get to school but with a little fun at home before they start school and when they have started school you can improve their knowledge, accuracy and speed with numbers. Here are some tried and tested fun ways to help.

Play Slap: This is a game pioneered by Jo at Kip McGrath and it is easy to play at home.

Suppose you want to improve your child’s ability with tables. Then…You write the answers to the 7 and 8 times tables (for example) onto pieces of paper and then stick them with blue tack around the room, or even in the garden using clothes pegs. You call out ‘’7 x 7 ‘’and your child runs to the answer and ‘slaps’ it with a fly swat and shouts ‘Slap!’ (Cheap swatters available from any £shop) As they get better, you count aloud to 3 and they must ‘slap’ before you say 3. If they do, they get a point and 10 points gets a reward. It is fun, gets rid of energy and also teaches them the tables as they play. You will see that they will want to then play this with their friends and siblings.

If you can remember learning tables at school you probably sang or chanted them.

Do it with the children and make a long walk or car ride fun! Knowing your tables saves time in maths questions, helps mental arithmetic and reduces errors in maths, all good stuff for those all-important SAT’s scores!!

‘Stick or Twist’ in the supermarket Set a budget, get them to add up the bill as you go round and ask them to tell you whether to ‘twist’ (put more in the trolley) or ‘stick’ (go and pay before the bank goes bust). For older children obviously and teaches them the cost of common foodstuff and budgeting. Also make them compare the cost per gram of different brands and then ‘twist’ with the best value.

Be encouraging: Always encourage your children to ‘have a go’. Sadly we all learn more from our mistakes than those things we get right first time!

Remember, confidence and self-esteem are the keys to successful learning and every small gain can be built upon. You can play the most important part in creating this with your child or grandchild.

Lot’s To Celebrate In Slimming World’s Local Group’s Both groups have been involved with charity fundraising last year both for Cancer research UK and for Breast Cancer. With the “great clothes throw” where members donated unwanted clothes 90 bags were donated between the groups which were worth £2,700 to Cancer research UK. Wirksworth hosted a clothes sale which raised £210 for Cancer research UK. Matlock had carried out various fund raisers such as raffles for Breast Cancer charity and did bag packing at Christmas raising a fantastic £258 for Cancer Research UK, Slimming Worlds charity partner for the year.

Slimming World in the area is in safe hands with your local team of Niki Hughes and Diane Evans, between them running 4 groups around Matlock and Wirksworth. Diane became a consultant in 2013 and is now running all three groups in Matlock with great success and Niki in the Wirksworth group
