Dales Directories

Editors Letter Dear Readers Welcome to the February/March issue of The Dales Directory; as usual this issue contains local businesses, articles, local events & local news. Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert gives you some of his best tips for choosing the best deals for your Children’s Savings accounts.

For LESS than the price of one of these

We can get you through about 65 of these!

Looking for a cleaner? Then give Georgina Shaw from ‘Sugar Dusters’ on page 11 a call. Our motoring journalist Tim Barnes-Clay test drives the Jaguar XF, see page 12/13. There’s an urgent need for volunteers for Age UK’s Befriending Service, especially in the Derbyshire Dales area, see page 17. Read about the Thai Yoga Massage Workshop for Couples Friends and Family I took part in, I had a great day – see page 19. "Smalls for All" see page 34, is a new charity run entirely by volunteers that aims to help children and young women in Africa meet their most basic needs through the provision of underwear. Having underwear is something we probably all take for granted, but is non-existent for many disadvantaged people in orphanages and IDP camps. I’m collecting any donations from local people - so have a clear out of your undies drawer or donate urgently needed money via their website www.smallsforall.org.uk Have a wonderful February and March and I’ll see you gain in April take care Sharon x

Martin Lewis ~ Kids Savings

By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert

My Twitter feed and mailbag are jammed with questions on the top children's savings accounts, so I want to give you a masterclass on the most common

questions. What are the best-paying children’s savings accounts? The big winner is the branch-only Halifax.co.uk Regular Saver, which pays 6% AER fixed for a year, though you can only pay in between £10 and £100 per month. Of course, this is only a small amount, and you have to drip feed cash in, but the rate is untouchable. If you want to save more, then Nationwide.co.uk Smart Limited Access account pays 3% AER variable on savings between £1 and £50,000, though it only allows you to withdraw cash once a year. For easy access, HSBC.co.uk’s My Savings account also pays 3% AER, but you can only save up to £3,000. Don't just do it for kids though, do it with them. Get them to monitor the rates in case they drop and if it does teach them how to check to find a better deal. That’s a real gift. For a full round up, see www.mse.me/kidssavings Who can open these? Generally, children need to be at least seven before they can open and manage accounts on their own. Though for HSBC under 16s will need a parent with them. For younger children, an adult needs to open the account on the child’s behalf and be a trustee or signatory (usually a parent though in some cases grandparents). Children don’t usually need to be present, but you’ll need ID for them, such as a passport. Your name will then be on the account with the child’s, but it’ll be your signature that controls it, not theirs. Grandparents can do this with the Halifax and Nationwide accounts. What about Junior ISAs and Child Trust Funds – are they worth it?

These are special tax-free savings accounts you can put up to £4,080 in per tax year, locked away until your child’s 18th birthday. If children are roughly aged five to 13 then they would’ve got a Child Trust Fund (CTF) and the state may have given up to £500 to start it off. Any younger or older kids are eligible for a Junior ISA (JISA). Both allow you to choose between a cash savings product and an investment product. If you’ve got a cash JISA or CTF don’t think you’re locked in with a provider. You can transfer it to a new provider - just open it and fill out their transfer forms. The best-paying JISAs for savings come from CoventryBuildingSociety.co.uk and Nationwide.co.uk, which both pay 3.25% AER variable. The best-paying CTF is from YBS.co.uk at 3% AER. Thankfully, since 6 April 2015 you’ve been allowed to convert savings CTFs into JISAs, and, as the rates are higher it’s a no brainer – just apply for a JISA then fill in the transfer forms. Surely kids don’t pay tax anyway? That’s a myth. Children pay tax just like adults, and like adults, they can currently earn up to £10,600 a year from income including savings interest without any tax being taken. So unless they are a young violin virtuoso or app-building whizz kid, it's unlikely they'd earn that, so their savings interest is tax free. Fill out an HMRC R85 form to ensure it’s paid that way – you can get one at Gov.uk. Yet there’s a specific rule for money given to a child by parents (not grandparents, aunts, uncles) to prevent them stashing their savings in their kid’s name to avoid tax. It says if they earn over £100 interest a year (so that’s about £3,300 saved in the top easy-access account) from money given by each parent the whole amount is counted as the parents income and taxed at their rate. So is there any point in a Junior ISA? For most people, no. The supposed big sell is that the interest isn't taxed. Yet this isn't an issue for most under–18s, so if normal kids savings pay more, which

Please mention The Dales Directory when responding to advertisers

6

Dales Directories Local services they often do, use those. There are three main exceptions to this. • You want the cash to be locked away until your child is 18. • You’re going to give your child enough money that they go over the £100-a-year interest threshold. If so, a Junior ISA means it avoids being taxed at your rate. • They’ll save enough cash over the years that they’d have more than the £15,240 adult cash ISA limit when they hit 18 (or whatever it is by then). If they save more than that into kids' saving accounts and then want to shift it into a tax–free ISA once they start earning, they would use up their full £15,000 allowance immediately. Yet Junior ISAs and CTFs automatically convert into an adult ISA, meaning you still keep your adult ISA allowance on top.

What about if you want a cash card for older children? The Halifax.co.uk Young Saver account comes with a cash card for children over seven, and pays a still decent 2.25% rate compared with the accounts above. This means they can take money out of an ATM. If you want an account with a debit card, so they can spend online or in shops from it, they can usually do this from age 11. The best-paying accounts that do so are Santander.co.uk’s 123 Mini account paying 3% AER on £300 - £2,000 and Nationwide.co.uk’s Flex One account paying 1% AER on the first £1,000.

It’s worth noting there’s also the Nsandi.com children's bond which lets you put £3,000 in, and pays 2.5% over 5 years – while it’s not a Junior ISA it’s also tax free in the same way.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES All new Jaguar XF - First Drive Location: Pamplona, Spain By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups

The first words out of my mouth when I handed my all-new Jaguar XF demonstrator keys back at Pamplona Airport were “I’m going to miss that motor”. And there’s a reason for that: the fresh British saloon I had on test in Spain made my life far more relaxing than I had envisaged.

This was demonstrated perfectly when we stopped off for a bit of cheeky track driving at the Circuito de Navarra. This modern motorsport race track, near Los Arcos, is a 3.933 km permanent road course that hosts the Superleague Formula series and the FIA GT1 World Championship. Under expert instruction I managed to get the XF to behave like the beast it can be. The car will hold on to the surface like Velcro, only stepping out when pushed to levels you’d never attempt on a public highway. Jaguar’s PR team did a good job by really showing us that the new XF isn’t just a mile muncher – it’s a machine offering pure dynamism. In other words, it truly is a driver’s car.

Now, let me make it clear; the two days I had with the XF involved traversing snaking roads high into the Pyrenees, hammering along fast stretches of motorway and negotiating narrow urban streets. The part of northern Spain I was in involves rural transport, too – and, with that, the odd wandering herd of cows, goats and sheep. My point is that, whether driving at 70mph or sat still waiting for a shamble of sheep to move, the XF looks after you. The soft leather seats, the hushed cabin, the excellent brakes and, even the sound system, make you feel as though a palace has been given four wheels. When there is a chance to bury your right foot into the deep carpet, the creamy smooth powertrain of the rear wheel drive Jaguar XF 380PS S, on test here, pulls the scenery by the side of your head briskly. It is done in such an uncomplicated way that the speedo needle can nudge three figures all too easily. Pure performance aside, handling is stunningly good. Indeed, the 2016 XF offers the fun already available from the Jaguar XJ, mainly due to its precise steering, lack of body roll and excellent traction.

The specification levels of the new XF are lavish. The cabin is a seamless blend of contemporary luxury materials and finishes, traditional Jaguar craftsmanship and state-ofthe art tech, with features such as a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, laser head-up display and an InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system. What’s more, stereo camera technology enables autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist systems. Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist takes the stress out of motorway driving in stop-go traffic by tracking the vehicle in front, at a safe distance.

Motoring

With its plethora of talents and refreshed, more modern exterior, the XF is soon etched on your mind. From a distance, there are slight hints of Audi at the rear, but the car doesn’t look as much like the other premium executive saloons you see double-parked outside Michelin-starred restaurants in Chelsea or in City of London corporate car parks In summary, this new XF is loaded with a host of awesome tech, making the driving experience as luxurious and as exciting as possible. The Jaguar’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. Indeed, the Jaguar XF 380PS S model, driven for this review, is as fast as you are ever likely to need.

COMPUTER TIP A new phishing attempt Not a computer attack – just a phone call trying to get information… The guy claimed to be updating my entry in TPS to which I do subscribe and he knew my name and address. Then he asked if I paid my phone bill by direct debit, which alerted me to a scam! He went on to talk about a credit card I've registered with them (TPS is free so there’s NO credit card registered!) and now he wanted to know the expiry data and CVC code of my Visa card, saying they’d already got the card number I said I didn’t have a Visa card so he said it could be Mastercard! Clearly this was all nonsense so don’t get caught out! See the website for full details.

Thai Yoga Massage Workshop for Couples, Friends and Family

I recently had the opportunity to attend a ‘Thai Yoga Massage for Couples, Friends and Family Workshop’ in Mickelover, run by experience Thai Yoga Massage therapists Dave Hoyle and Katya Everatt, at The Bridge Centre for Natural Health near Derby. Over the past 12 months or so, I’ve been receiving regular Thai Yoga Massage sessions from Dave Hoyle who’s based in Matlock, he’s a lovely guy and an amazing therapist, who’s so intuitive and caring. I have complete trust in Dave, so much so, that during a treatment I can completely switch off, allowing him to release any muscle tension, improve my joint movement and amongst other things, re balance my energy flow whilst completely relaxing my mind!

I came away from the workshop feeling physically tired but exhilarated, I’m looking forward to going through my workbook and practicing on my family and friends, and learning more about this amazing therapy in the future. Thai Yoga Massage For Couples, Friends and Families Workshops are designed to introduce people to the joy of sharing Thai yoga massage. The next workshop will be held at The Bridge Centre for Natural Health in Derby on Sunday March 6th at 10 am - 4 pm. The workshop costs £97 per couple. If you do not have a partner to bring along, please do get in touch as they may be able to pair you up on the day. For more info please contact Dave at davehoyle35@hotmail.com or 07870627793, to book your place on the next workshop.

There were eight couples taking part in the workshop, and after watching Dave and Katya demonstrate each of the moves. So with the help of our workbooks and under close supervision we were encouraged to perform the moves on each other, the idea being that we could try to ease each other’s tension, cleanse and attune each other’s pranayama (energy body), and practice metta, or loving kindness with each other. Thai Yoga Massage is relaxing, intuitive and healing, and so you getthe best out of it Dave stressed that any emotional baggage you’ve brought with you that day is left at the door, so that you’re able to give and receive loving kindness to each other.

When a child feels they are not as good as their friends at school they learn ‘coping strategies’ which hide them from view and allow them to survive in the classroom. Improving their situation is difficult as the coping strategies take on a life of their own. Sometimes this is seen as naughtiness, lack of concentration or in Bailey’s case bad handwriting! Now why would he want bad handwriting you wonder? Well it was because he found spelling so difficult and failed miserably at it. His coping strategy for his teacher was ‘if you can’t read it, you can’t correct it’.

helping him with his school work generally. Even his teachers have commented on this to his proud mum! Bailey has gone from being a little boy who was already finding ways to ‘cope’ at school and stay below the radar to one who is now learning with gusto and revelling in his new found confidence. He will continue as this new confident little boy and move even higher up the academic ladder as he gets older. If he feels unsure he can always rely on his Kip teachers to support him and get him out of the rut.

Well done Bailey! If you think your child is using a similar ‘coping Bailey’s mum was concerned about his handwriting, strategy’ why not bring them along to Jo at Kip for reading and spelling so in July 2015, when he was a FREE assessment and let them be the best at 6, she brought him to Jo at Kip for a FREE school that they can be. assessment. This showed that his reading was in line with expectations for his age but he did have trouble with spelling, also his hand writing was very difficult to read. In addition his concentration levels were a bit erratic and he was easily distracted. How many parents of children, particularly boys, are familiar with that scenario! Because he wasn’t so far behind in his reading, Jo suggested he would benefit from attending the six sessions of the summer school at the end of August and it would also prepare him for going back to school in September. At the end of those 2 weeks, his hand writing was much easier to decipher, but more to the point, he’d enjoyed himself so much that he wanted to continue at Kip in the September and work on his spelling! By Christmas ( 3 months later) his spelling had improved by a whole year and he was routinely using full sentences when completing reading comprehensions, something he had not done before… and his handwriting was so much better,we could read them all too! He is now so confident that each week he delights in telling Jo how many spellings he got right at school in the previous test and his improved literacy skills are

SHOW US YOUR KNICKERS We’re having a collection for Smalls for All - a pantastic charity that collects and distributes underwear to women and children in Africa who need our help. Underwear is a luxury that some people can’t afford. Giving pants and bras may seem like a small thing, but it can make a huge difference. For example not having underwear can mean that young girls miss days off school each month. If you want to show your support, pop to the shop and pick up some new pants or raid your bra drawer. Here's what they need: NEW - ladies pants size 8 - 16 NEW - children’s pants age 3 - 15 NEW - or gently worn bras Well worn bras that can be recycled to raise funds
