Matlock Derwent Valley Lions Club (Reg Charity no. 1038179)
Ready to Help - You couldn’t choose a better Formed in 1979, over 30 years ago, Matlock Derwent Valley Lions Club members have served the local community and enjoyed themselves into the bargain. Not only has the club helped numerous people and organisations at home and abroad but we have been recognised by receiving numerous awards, not least in 2011, when Derbyshire County Council presented us with a certificate and glass plaque in recognition of our community and volunteering services. Our motto “We Serve” says exactly what we do. Like many service organisations, membership numbers have declined. However, this has not reduced the commitment of our current membership, as we have adjusted the type of events that we carry out, to enable us to continue being as active as possible. Being very keen to expand the services that we can offer to our local community, in particular, it is very obvious that we need to recruit some new members. We make no apology for this very blatant appeal to entice both men and women to come and meet us. This will give them an opportunity to hear more about what we are, what we do and to ask any questions – without any commitment on their part. We meet in the Square & Compass Inn, Darley Bridge, at 8.00p.m., on the 2nd Monday of every month, where you will be made very welcome. You can find out more about us from our website www.matlocklions.org.uk . If you’d prefer to meet us more informally, then please make contact via the website and we can let you know about our monthly social programme. Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller and and communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. Did you know The name of our organization, LIONS, was not chosen randomly. It actually stands for “Liberty, Integrity, Our Nations Service”. Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. We have more than 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs worldwide.
10
We're active men and women in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness – it's part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding the elderly and the disabled. We also conduct vision screenings, equip hospitals and clinics, distribute medicine and raise awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all. Lions have extended their commitment to sight conservation through countless local efforts. Our community projects often support local children and schools through scholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many programs, including the Peace Poster Contest, Youth Camps and Exchanges. Since 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation has awarded more than $660 million in grants to support Lions humanitarian projects around the world. The Foundation was also ranked the number one Non-governmental organization in a 2007 study by The Financial Times; following the same accolade from the United Nations itself. Together, our Foundation and Lions are helping communities, following natural disasters by providing for immediate needs such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies and aiding in long-term reconstruction. 1917 The beginning - Chicago business leader Melvin Jones asked a simple and world-changing question – “What if people put their talents to work improving their communities?” 1920: Just three years after our founding, Lions became international when we established the first club in Canada. Mexico followed in 1927. 1925:Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired. In the 1940s, 50s and 60s international growth accelerated, with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Dales Directories Community In 1990, the latest long-term project for Lions clubs in the UK and Ireland “SightFirst” was launched, restoring sight and preventing blindness on a global scale. Lions have raised more than $346 million for this initiative. SightFirst targets the major causes of blindness: cataract, trachoma, river blindness, childhood blindness, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Lions Clubs International extends our mission of service every day. The needs are great and our services broad. Our international network has grown to include more than 200 countries and geographic areas.
Vision Statement
Lions Colin Turnbull, Stuart Dodds and Kevin Senior receive the Award for Community& Voluntary Service from Chair of Derbyshire County Council, Cllr. George Wharmby
To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.
Mission Statement To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.

Dales Directories Restaurant Review
The Fishpond in Matlock Bath is the place to be this Summer Matlock Bath is very pretty nestled alongside the River Derwent in a steep and beautiful gorge; it’s not surprising that it’s a magnet for tourists and locals all year round. One of the best places to visit in Matlock Bath is The Fishpond Free house situated on the main parade near to the Pavilion. The Fishpond has recently been refurbished to a very high standard and provides live music usually every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. As well as a great selection of beer supplied by local breweries and wine’s advised by local wine merchant John Hattersley. They even have freshly baked artisan bread every day that’s baked on the premises. Their bread is so good that apparently there’s one lady who gets the bus all the way from Derby, buys a few loaves has a coffee, then gets the bus back to Derby!. I visited The Fishpond recently with my partner and daughter to sample their food and hospitality on one Friday evening about 6:30pm. We had reserved a table because we didn’t want to be disappointed as we know from past experience it tends to be very busy on a weekends On arrival we were shown to our table and given the menu, the waitress also pointed out the ‘Specials Board’ to us. If you only fancy a drink and a light snack then they have a lovely selection of snacks such as ‘Freshly Baked Artisan Bread & Dips’ for £3; much more exciting that a packet of crisps I think! When we were ready to order we went to the bar. My daughter ordered ‘Mixed Olives’ (£2.50) to start with as she only wanted a light snack. My partner ordered Roast Vegetable Soup served with Artisan Bread (£4.50) from the ‘Specials Board’, and I ordered Home Smoked Mackerel Pate, Toasted Fishpond Sourdough with Dressed Watercress (£4.50). The chef is fairly new to The Fishpond and I’ve heard he is very talented. Apparently he’s worked for many years as a chef in the Isles of Scilly where he learnt his skills of working with fresh local produce.
their Pizza’s as ‘Not your average run of the mill pizza…’ and having eaten here before my partner knew that he wanted to have one of their pizzas again, as it was so good last time. This time he ordered a Pizza topped with Home Smoked Free Range Chicken, Dried Chorizo, Baby Red Chard, Smoked Apple Wood Cheddar, and Paprika Oil (£9.95). I had the seared Sea Trout, Roast Butternut Squash, Dressed Red Chard and Chorizo Salad, served with their own Brioche from the ‘Specials Board’ (£14.00). We finished our meals with deserts and coffee. I ordered Treacle Tart with Sweetened Crème Fresh; my partner had Sticky Toffee Pudding, with Ice Cream. And a portion of Pistachio Ice cream for my daughter afterwards she decided that this was her favourite ice cream. The food and drinks that we were served that evening were excellent; everything was freshly prepared, cooked beautifully and very well presented. None of us could think of any negatives except that the portion of olives was too big! So big in fact we had to take the remainder home in a ‘doggy’ bag! We left to go home at around 8:30 pm; the venue was getting full with locals and visitors getting ready for a lively evening of entertainment from the ‘Rush’ tribute band who were due to start performing at 9pm. Having been to a Rush concert many years ago (my ear drums still bare the scars) I thought they sounded very much like them. The Fishpond regularly host many different types of live bands and comedy nights in their 200 capacity ballroom and bar area, they’ve even had famous ones such as Thin Lizzie and Ian Dury. Don’t let the opportunity to visit The Fishpond this summer slip you by. Please enjoy their great food, watch their lively entertainment and eat their yummy bread this summer. If you do then like us you’ll be hooked! Call to make a reservation 01629 55006
For our main courses my daughter ordered ‘Matlock Bath’s Classic’ Yeasted Battered Haddock, Twice Cooked Chips and their own Tartar Sauce (£8.95). The Fishpond describe

Don’t Have A Will? - find out how we can help A cautionary tale …….. Fred and Joan were happily married for 59 years. They jointly owned their house so when Fred passed away, the house belonged 100% to Joan. All was well until Joan’s health failed and she needed to go into a Nursing Home. As Joan owned the house ‘lock, stock and barrel’, the local authority were able to step in and force the sale of the property to pay for long term care. As time went on, the money disappeared and their son was left with virtually nothing. It could have been so different with a simple change to their Wills …. If Fred and Joan had owned their
house as ‘tenants in common’ instead of ‘joint tenants’, when Fred died his 50% share would have gone into a Trust. Jean could continue to live there as she owned 50% also, but when she went into a Home the local authority could not force the sale as she only owned half. Eventually her son would benefit, as his parents had wished. You must make this kind of Will when you are both alive and of sound mind – so don’t put it off! Protect your property for your heirs and don’t let it pass to the State! Get a Will done now… Call Jan, The Wills Lady, on 0800 970 6246

Launched as a permanent venture in April 2013, All Things Bright & Beautiful is based at the renovated f o r m e r Methodist Church on the m a i n promenade in Matlock Bath.
used as a furniture store for 34 years, before being sold at auction in 2008.
Open from 11am-5pm every weekend, including bank holiday Mondays, the venue provides an outlet for local independent crafters, food producers and small businesses to sell their products direct to the local community and the many tourists visiting Matlock Bath.
New lease of life This wonderful building now has a new lease of life. On a typical weekend at All Things Bright & Beautiful you may find: ‘Dad’s Bees’ – wonderful Derbyshire honey. Kevin Wood – Cromford artist, with a range of fun coasters, mugs and signed prints. ‘Chunky Oak Design’– turning reclaimed railway sleepers into beautiful wooden frames, clocks and coat racks. ‘The Rustic Camper’ - a selection of cheeses and tasty pickles. Handmade cards & wedding stationary from Elaine Shaw and Ruby Sellors Ethical toiletries from ‘The Bodyshop at Home’ A must-have treat from ‘Rachel’s Muffins’ of Tideswell, made using Derbyshire ingredients ‘Ossie’s Collection’ pop-up boutique - a personally selected range of clothing from Spain, Italy and the UK Tom Crawley – fudge-maker extraordinaire Jewellery to suit all tastes – dichroic glass from ‘Made with Love’ and Carole Birch, silverware from ‘Jewelzonline’ and Cromford jeweller Lisa J Smith Jofli Bear - Cute & cuddly travelling companions designed by Suzi O'Neill
The business is the brainchild of Julia Dale and her husband Nathan Davies, residents of Matlock Bath and owners of The Old Methodist Church. “Our vision is to create an interesting and vibrant marketplace - a showcase for local producers, creative talent and fledgling businesses. Our venue provides an exciting opportunity for innovative ‘pop-up’ shops, without the long-term commitment usually associated with high street retail space.” “Weekly fairs bring local consumers an everchanging kaleidoscope of stalls, offering variety throughout the season and access to products not otherwise available in the Derbyshire Dales” A brief history of the building The stone built church on North Parade, Matlock Bath opened in February 1867. The building remained as a Methodist church until 1974, when it was sold to local company ‘Morris of Matlock Ltd’. It was converted and

The renovation of the building has been a ‘labour of love’ for it’s new owners, balancing the desire to reveal more of the original features with the need to maintain a practical commercial space. Take a moment to pause and look up as you enter the building. The full height of the front arched windows is once again revealed. Framed with red coloured glass, they cast vibrant shadows across the floor as the sun shines through. Notice too the decorative metal grates in the floor as you enter.
We warmly invite all readers to come and visit us. You will find a friendly atmosphere where you can meet and buy direct from local producers, artisans and traders, with a chance to sample food produce before you buy. We look forward to seeing you in Matlock Bath!
