Lumsdale Valley- Situated in Upper Lumsdale, Lumsdale Valley is known by many as a hidden gem. Here you can visit the remains of water mills, providing a peek at the history of our ancestors. Lumsdale Valley was once at the middlemost point of production in this remote valley. Whilst venturing round the valley, visitors can see the remains of the most likely 16th Century Bone Mill, which was abandoned in the 1920s. Further along the path, visitors will come across a second, 19th Century Mill, built in the 1850s. The second mill also features a large mill stone imported from France. The path then leads on to Paint Mill, the third mill. So named as it was used in the paint industry, Paint Mill is one of the oldest in the valley. Built in 1770, the Valley also features a fourth mill. The fourth mill is said to be

quite something as it is built into the rock face which has been worn away by the waterfall. There is also a viewing platform here. Upper Bleach Mill is the fifth mill of the valley. This mill was linked by train to another mill, Garton Mill, which took cotton from one mill to the other. The remains of the train track can still be found nearby. As the largest in this series of mills, Garton Mill was built in 1785 by Watts Lowe and Co and has a lengthy history. Having not become commercially successful as a cotton spinning mill, the company went bankrupt in 1813. After being sold to John Garton, the mill was converted into a bleach works which operated until the early 20th Century. Just one mile east of Matlock, this picturesque valley is a must see for those wanting to explore the history of Matlock. The Arkwright Society is a registered charity 515526

Annabelle and Johnny both had very different experiences at Kip Here are their stories in their own words… Hi my name is Annabelle and in September

Johnny’s story dictated to Jo

last year I was rubbish at Maths. I am a year 10 student and I really found Maths hard. I hated it. My dad said I had to do something about it so he brought me to Kip and Jo tested me. I was really rubbish at Maths! I couldn’t even do the year 5 assessment. I went home and cried and never wanted to go back to Kip or school again. I knew I was bad but 5 years bad!!! Awwgh!

Hi, I am 19 years old and I got an apprenticeship for this next September. Problem is I am dyslexic , real badly, and any reading or writing is beyond me. Last November I couldn’t even write my name and address. I had a reader and a writer at school to do exams and work and stuff. Jo tested me and I could read like a 6 year old. That was hard but I want this job so I have to do something. I had to start with the ABC and within a month I could read some words by myself and recognise some letter combinations like ‘sh’ and ‘br’ and the sound they make.

Jo got a whole load of stuff that I needed to do, like basic stuff and some special topics. Each week we did a bit together and I did a load by myself on the computer. Jo said it was ok to get things wrong because then I would learn by that more than always getting it right. Seemed weird to me, but she is the boss!! Took me until Christmas before I could do the year 5 stuff and I thought at this rate I’ll be really old before I catch myself up. I think I must have had a magic spell on me over Christmas, by mid-January I finished the year 6 work and the end of January I did a full year 7 assessment. I did 2 years better in Maths in just 5 months. I reckon by summer I will be caught up and next summer maybe even get my GCSE with a good grade! Even if it isn’t high enough Jo says I can come back and work on getting it higher with her. Now I know I not rubbish at Maths I just look at it differently, it just takes me a bit more time but I can get there! Thanks Jo!!

It was like amazing but I could start to see words from the jumble of letters that had always been there and I got my first reading book at Christmas and I could read it by myself. Wow that felt amazing!! Jo said we should do another reading test in January and I have done a whole year better in just 2 and a half months. Since Christmas I have read 3 books by myself and I managed to fill in a form for my apprenticeship the other day. I think by the time I go to my apprenticeship job in September I will be able to do loads more as reading and writing is coming on. It is never too late to get better. Thanks Jo!

Call Jo on Tel: 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment.

COMPUTER TIP Lost Your Windows Profile? There is a problem that has been around since the days of XP but it has become more prolific. I used to see it maybe once every year or so but now I’m getting called sometimes several times a week! The problem is that Windows decides that your profile is corrupt and so creates a new one. Suddenly all your icons have gone, your documents and pictures are missing and your email doesn’t work! Fortunately all is not lost and the fix is simple, though VERY dangerous for those without proper understanding (and backups) since it involves changes to the registry and that could kill your computer! Hence I’m not giving details of the fix here but am quite happy to talk you through it if you call me – or check out the website.

Rental Income and National Insurance Contributions – A Silver Lining?

depends on there being a business to incorporate, amongst other things; simply holding property for investment will not qualify.

Until recently, receiving rental income from properties was free from any liability to pay National Insurance Contributions. It still is… but only if a letting is purely an investment or qualifies as a Furnished Holiday Let, both of which HMRC keep outside the scope of NIC.

Whether HMRC will consider that the lettings are being run as a business depends on many factors and of course there is no clear-cut definition. However, if you have not registered to pay class 2 National Insurance Contributions and later claim to be running a business, this may well weaken your argument to have Incorporation Relief applied.

However, despite what you may have read elsewhere, should landlords be regarded as carrying on business activities, then there is a requirement to register and pay Class 2 National Insurance Contributions.

To give some comfort here, HMRC offer an informal clearance process to confirm whether a taxpayer is running a business or not. Details of the letting activities are shared with HMRC and of course showing that you have complied You might think that sounds like a bit of with the normal requirements for a hassle. registering a business, including for Class 2 NIC, will help considerably. In fact acknowledging that a business is Whilst HMRC are not obliged to confirm being run, and registering for NIC, might either way, recently we have found that actually help create a significant they are willing to give a decision, which advantage for you financially. is helpful. Here’s why. From April 2017 the tax relief you can claim on loan interest for properties you own personally (or in a partnership) has been restricted. Many landlords, realising this is going to cost them more and more each year, are looking at transferring their let properties into a company. But this can fall foul of a significant Capital Gains Tax charge. One answer may be Incorporation Relief, when any capital gain is deferred until a sale of the company shares. This can be very useful for tax planning. To be entitled to Incorporation Relief

I give below a link to the page from the Institute of Chartered Accountants website, giving good background and a useful summary of the NIC position for various types of buy to let property owners. https://ion.icaew.com/taxfaculty/b/weblo g/posts/propertylettingandnationalinsura nce If you’d like an illustration of whether the classification of your rental activities as a business could help you in your tax planning, contact me at Gritstone Tax. © 2017 Keith Emmerson

MARTIN LEWIS Money Sins By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert

Are you a sinner? Financially that is. There are a host of everyday money misdemeanours that millions of people do, costing them thousands, without being aware of it. These aren’t horrors like grabbing a payday loan, but the result of simple misunderstandings, bad habits or inaction. So having recently toured around the UK doing roadshows for the sixth series of my ITV show, I’ve collated five of the most common. 1. Saving while you’ve expensive debts Savings rates are depressingly low – the top easyaccess rate is 1%. Credit card and other interest rates are depressingly high. So, £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs it costs you £180 a year, the same amount saved in top paying savings account at 1% interest only earns you £10. If you had both, pay the debt off with your savings and you'd be £170 a year better off. Many of you will be thinking, "but I want to keep my savings, what if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in?" However, that’s a sentimental strategy, not a logical one. Let’s carry on the £1,000 debt and £1,000 savings scenario to show you why. - If you don’t pay the debt off with the savings and an emergency happens that cost you £1,000 to fix, you’d use all your savings and still £1,000 of credit card debt. - If you do pay off the debt with the savings, and a £1,000 emergency happens, you’d need to pay for it on your credit card, meaning you still have no savings and £1,000 of credit card debt. The end result of them both is the same, yet by paying off the debt with the savings, you save in the meantime. The only exception is if the debt is at 0%. Then the financially savvy and disciplined can do what’s called stoozing, where you deliberately build up 0% debt only to save it and earn interest. Though with current saving rates so low, it’s not as easy as it used to be. Full help on that at www.mse.me/stoozing

2. Not at least asking your energy firm are you on its cheapest deal Most people in the UK are on their energy firm’s standard tariff, which typically means they’re overpaying by £300 a year. I’ve talked about switching until I’m blue in the face, and, of course, the best plan is take five minutes to do a full market comparison via my www.CheapEnergyClub.com or any www.Ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison site. Yet for some that doesn’t hit home. So, let me be plain. Even if you won’t do that, just pick up the phone and ask your current provider “Am I on your cheapest tariff?” and, if not, switch to that as there’s no change but the price! For example, as I write (it can change daily), on EDF’s standard tariff someone with typical usage pays £1,070/year. It also has a 12-month fix at £880/year - £190/year less. British Gas’s standard tariff with typical use is £1,044/year, but it also runs Sainsbury Energy (i.e., it’s the same company but a different name), and its cheapest fix is £804/year – saving £240/year. This don’t ask don’t get saving works at all the big firms, so if you won’t do a comparison, at least do this. 3. Only making the minimum repayments on credit cards Credit card minimum payments are based mostly on a percentage of the balance, which only just covers the interest. So, you hardly clear any off. A 30-year-old with £3,000 debt on a credit card at 17.9% interest, who made only typical minimum repayments, would take 27 years to clear it. By then, they’d be 57 and have paid a total cost £4,000 in interest (see my minimum repayment calc at www.mse.me/minrepay to work out how long it’ll take you). Now you may be thinking ‘easy to say, but I can’t afford more than the minimum.’ Well, I have a solution. On £3,000 debt, the current minimum is around £70 a month. If instead of opting to pay the minimum, fix your repayment at £70. The debt will clear in five years at a total cost of £1,500 in interest, saving £2,400. Though if you’ve debt on more than one credit card, focus all spare cash on repaying the most expensive, making only the minimums on the oth-

Dales Directories Local Services ers. That way you get rid of the most expensive debts first. 4. Don’t cover your home’s value on buildings insurance Your house price is the wrong figure; you only need to insure the usually much lower rebuild cost – literally how much it would cost to rebuild your home should it get knocked down. This is often far less than the market value. There’s information and a calculator on this at http://abi.bcis.co.uk. 5. Saving or borrowing to pay your children’s tuition fees I’m often freaked out by parents telling me they’re saved up so their child won’t have to pay tuition fees at uni. Worse, some even extend their mortgage. My problem isn’t just that it’s actually students’, not parents’ responsibility to repay this… All new English full-time students can get a tuition fee loan and a living loan to help pay for uni costs. You’re eligible to start repaying in the April after leaving, but only if you earn over £21,000, and you repay 9% above that. Repayments stop after

30 years. In many ways, it acts far more like a tax than a loan, and how many would save “in case my child earns enough to be a higher rate taxpayer”? An extreme example provides clarity. Imagine your child goes to uni and becomes a brilliant poet, who never earns above the £21,000 threshold. They would never repay a penny. So, if you paid the fees for them, you’d throw £27,000 away. Most of course will earn over the threshold. However only high earners will earn enough to repay in real terms what they borrowed within the 30 years. If not, again it means pay their tuition fees and you’re paying more than they’d need to repay. For most parents if you want to help them, a better thing to prioritise is building up a mortgage deposit. For far more on this see my mse.me/dontpayupfront guide.
