Is Your Plate a Minefield? Was food and diet always this complicated? Have our modern bodies become hyper sensitive to food (and if so why?) or are we following a trend that looks for something to blame when we’re feeling a bit out of sorts? And you could also be juggling nutritional advice related to a health condition like Type 2 Diabetes. At a recent family gathering the ‘bring a dish’ catering was discussed: something for the ‘Gluten Free’ brigade, something ‘Dairy Free’ for the Lactose Intolerant ones, then there were the Vegans (no good old fashioned Vegetarians interestingly) and myself eating an almost zero carb diet (it’s a long story). Other than giving caterers a headache, these restricted food choices can be pretty tricky for the individuals concerned. A Food Allergy is NOT the same as an intolerance or sensitivity. I won’t forget my 18 year old daughter FaceTiming me from Uni with a face swollen up like a football, throat closing up rapidly…”pineapple … yes Mum, there must have been pineapple in that curry…” Even a tiny amount of a food you’re allergic to can trigger life-threatening
symptoms so it’s important you receive medical care and advice. Sensitivity to a food, rather than an allergy, may not land you in A&E, but the symptoms can be still be pretty miserable bloating, cramps, aching joints, skin rashes, itching.. to say nothing of what happens in the smallest room in the house. The NHS website explains the challenge: “There are no tests for food intolerances. The only way to know if you have one is to monitor your symptoms and the food you eat. See what happens when you cut out the suspected food for a while (2 to 6 weeks), and then reintroduce it back into your diet.” But what if you suspect you may be sensitive to multiple foods? It could take months of trying various combinations before you are any the wiser. In my practice I use an interesting alternative to the ‘Trial Elimination’ method: Muscle Response Testing, a diagnostic tool that has been
used in the Natural Health world for many years. In 2014 the technique went through the rigours of clinical trials at Oxford University. By identifying a ‘stress’ or ‘no stress’ response in the muscle (usually the arm is used) multiple foods can be tested very quickly without any need to ingest the food. Rosemary recently worked with me to test her response to close to 100 food products in her kitchen: “ Some of the foods my body reacted to were ones I was already aware of: wheat flour, raising agents and just about anything that’s highly processed. But, rice, corn and mango came as quite a surprise. I'm really looking forward to seeing how my aching joints respond to tweaking my diet.” More often than not, after a HeartSpeak Nutrition Insights appointment I find that people end up with a MORE varied diet, not a more restrictive one. Food may be unjustly getting the blame for how we’re feeling.

BookReview Jo Jakeman ‘Sticks and Stones’ By Emily Eaton at Cool River Café Jo Jakeman’s debut is best described as a revenge thriller, that will have your pulse racing, and have you gripped from page 1…which it definitely is and definitely will. I feel it is also an intense character study of feminismthree females joining together in solidarity. Imogen, Ruby and Naomi are sworn enemies, just as ‘the ex’ should be. The three are very different women but they find common ground and almost a special bond in their shared experience of being with Phillip Rochester- the abusive, power hunger man, riding on his perfect reputation and very use to getting what he wants; we all know a man like this right? Jo brings together and develops each character to the reader in a way that gives so much depth and reality to them, that they never appear two dimensional. They feel like people we all know and know very well. Not once does Phillip the ‘villain’ feel like an over the top pantomime villain and the lead, Imogen, never comes
across as your typical damsel in distress or scorned mistress out for revenge. The gritty pros and eloquent descriptions create a world that many will fully relate to; how many women out there have questioned if they are doing enough for their child, have a strained relationship with their mother, have gone through a messy divorce and hate the other half’s new partner? I admire Jo for tackling such sensitive subject matters such as domestic abuse, depression and the loss of a child and yet you can still find satirical humor in the writing which keeps you turning the page for more, (Should be I laughing at this, probably not!). Needless to say, I couldn’t put this book down and I cannot wait for Jo’s next book- Safe House, which you can preorder now on her website www.jojakeman.com. *Jo will be appearing at the café for one night, joined by fellow author and friend Roz Watkins on Friday 12 July at 6pm. This will be a great evening of talk about crime writing, becoming an author and what their inspirations are. Book tickets at Derby Live online or call 01332 255800, option 1.*

More about Yoga‌..‌.‌..I
Qalbi
have been interested in yoga for around 30 years, but its in the last 10 years that my passion and practice has intensified. I completed my nurse training in 1991 and have been nursing ever since. I have worked on surgical and oncology units but have spent the last 20 years as a Colorectal Nurse Practitioner/Nurse consultant, I have completed an MSC in Advanced Nurse Practice as well as a diploma in oncology Nursing and a certificate in nursing genetics. I absolutely love being a Nurse and feel immensely privileged to be be able to care for people. I also feel the same about yoga. I love immersing myself in the physical, spiritual and philosophical world of yoga and being able to share that practice and experience with others. Three years ago I moved away from the city, changed my work schedule and decided to go to Thailand to do
my yoga teacher training (YTT200). The training was physically challenging but with the support of our amazing teachers and my fellow pupils and also my husband who had accompanied me I completed the training. I learnt huge amounts from my training and will be eternally grateful to Rory and his team for igniting my passion to do and teach yoga but also for demonstrating purity in practice and how humanity shines when our ego is kept in check. I returned home and immediately started a yoga class at the local village hall. I am still nursing full time but now run 2 classes per week as well as regular work shops and retreats. In summer 2018 I travelled to Holland to undergo my Yin Yoga training. This was a 100 hour course and although shorter than the basic training, it was equally intense and has given my practice and teaching diversity and a new perspective in body structure and function. My classes are based on Primary Series Vinyasa Yoga but I
incorporate Yin postures. My workshops will combine both styles of yoga achieving a feeling of balance and wholeness. Vinyasa style yoga focuses on body alignment, giving the entire body a work out (whether gentle or strong), calming the mind, releasing emotions and harmonising the breath and body. Regular practice will help with many chronic ailments such as back and joint problems, migraines, digestive disorders, stress/anxiety, poor posture and weight loss. Yin Yoga is a very different style of yoga, and entails holding postures for longer periods of time. It focuses less on cardiac output and more on fascia release. Other benefits include calming and balancing the mind, reducing stress/anxiety, increase circulation, improve flexibility and balancing the internal organs by improving the internal energy flow. I would love to see you at one of my classes, please see my advert above for more details.

COMPUTER TIP How dead is a dead disk? A client had his laptop fail. He'd taken it to a shop which found that the disk drive had failed and had replaced it. The problem was that his final year dissertation was on that drive, was not backed up (!!!) and had to be handed in in ten days’ time. I was asked if there was any chance I could recover the files. I checked out the disk and sure enough it wouldn't mount in Windows (not all that unusual) nor in Linux, still the reality is that just because it can't be read by operating systems doesn't always mean that the data is lost. Using some powerful data recovery tools by the end of the day his laptop had the two files he desperately needed and also ALL his documents and pictures. Mind you, he SHOULD have had a backup! DIY for beginners Drilling into walls: Tip 1. If you don't have a drill with a depth guide on it simply use a piece of tape wrapped round the drill bit to show how deep you need to go! Tip 2. Now this one really seems to impress people! When drilling into walls (especially brick) a lot of dust will come out and make a mess. Fold a large post-it note in to a V-shape and stick it directly under where you're going to drill. The dust falls into the post-it. Great!!
