Where do you get YOUR energy ? Very early on in our relationship, my husband and I sat down and compared our Personality Profiles ooh how romantic! I know that sounds like a pretty strange thing to do, but we believe it was one of the major building blocks to creating a partnership based on mutual respect and understanding. This is because discovering your ‘type’ gives great insight into how you see the world and how you prefer to behave when you are offered the choice. And the good news is that anyone can benefit from this kind of understanding (for free!). There are many different types of Personality Profile, but the one I have personally found resonates with people best is one called MyersBriggs which assigns you a four letter ‘type’ based on the answers you give to a series of questions. You may have been offered the chance to complete one in your workplace or in education and via www.16personalities.com anyone can discover what their profile is completely free. You receive a report explaining how your ‘type’ prefers to behave generally, as a parent, as friend, as a partner and in the workplace. Some people are resistant to the idea of being ‘put in a box’ as though the description of their best matched Type is suggesting that they only ever behave in this way. This is a common misunderstanding: the explanation of how your Type feels most comfortable, simply shows how you would prefer to be if there were no outside influences (like other people or the culture you’re in). We’re all capable of behaving in many ways that might not come easily to us, and we often have to.

The first letter of your Type is either an E or and I. I am an ‘E’ and Martin, my husband is an ‘I’. Interestingly we share the rest of the letters, him being an INFJ and myself an ENFJ. Those first letters are a vital key to understanding what makes someone tick because they describe where a person gets their energy from. The ‘I’ stands for Introverted, but this is often misunderstood as a description of how outgoing (or not) someone is. What it actually means is that ‘I’ types get their energy from INSIDE themselves. They recharge their batteries by spending time alone. They may be highly sociable, but being in the company of others does ultimately run their batteries down. ‘E’ types like me get their energy from outside of themselves: interaction with others fills us UP. You only have to look a my social media use (high) and his (low) to see that in play. How this has helped our relationship is that we both understand what energises and what depletes us. As someone who likes to be around people it would have been easy for me to misinterpret Martin’s behaviour of spending a lot of leisure time alone doing various projects, as a sign that he would rather be alone that be with me. I could have easily ‘over thought’ that to the point of feeling that he didn’t care enough for me. Instead I understood that after a working day interacting with people (draining for him), he needs some solitude to get some balance back… or at least some peace and quiet. And in turn he recognises that I thrive on being connected to people - that I am energised by having people in our home or socialising with others. If you’re an ‘E’ type, it’s likely that you’ll have struggled more with your mental health during the lockdowns that our self sufficient ‘I’ partners, colleagues or family members.

What’s interesting is realising that behaving ‘outside’ of our preferred style creates stress and so, if you were in a job where you ALWAYS had to If you’re heading over to www.16personalities.com behave in a style contrary to the one that comes to get yours, just remember to answer the questions naturally to you, then that is an unhealthy as if you had all the freedom in the world to act in environment for you. People in this position often a way that feels right to you, not in the way you feel find outlets for this excessive stress through like you ‘ought’to. Why not take the opportunity to unhealthy distraction tools like alcohol, drugs, understand yourself and the people around you gambling or high risk sexual activity…. or at the very better? least, find themselves depressed or continually anxious. Yoga and Mental Health Yoga is an amazing gift to give yourself. Whether you are an adult, a teenager or a child, yoga can be a beautiful counterbalance to the speed and rush of daily life. By applying yourself to yoga regularly your body will become stronger and more flexible, and your mind will become calmer and have better focus and concentration. By giving yourself time to look inwards at your body and mind you will gain a better understanding of how to look after your muscles, your spine, and your mental wellbeing. Giving precious time to yourself with the aim of improving how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally, is essential in order to remain healthy and happy.

that stillness. Yoga addresses this need to move, allowing the body time to release tension, as well as build strength and flexibility. If you are an avid sportsperson, perhaps you need something to balance a particular repeated movement, for example, the muscles involved in running or cycling or swimming. Yoga uses the whole body, restoring a healthy physiological balance; it has been shown to help prevent sports injuries when practiced in conjunction with training. Spinal movement stimulates the brain while breathing exercises address the nervous system. Yoga poses improve posture, bodily strength and general flexibility. All of these contribute to confidence, self-esteem and a better understanding of your body and your mind. FlowMotion.life – the beautiful yoga studio nestled in the heart of Matlock – offers yoga of different styles and levels for all ages from babies, to teens and adults. Why not come and give it a try? www.flowmotion.life

Aromatherapy……….What is it? Aromatherapy has been around for centuries, it’s certainly nothing new! From the earth's natural plants, flowers, trees, shrubs, roots, leaves, grasses, seeds and fruits, oil is extracted to make powerful forms of aromatic liquid, also known as essential oils. Aromatherapy oils have been used since before 3,500 years BC and were important for religious rituals, food flavourings, masking bad odours and for bathing. Egyptians, who are regarded as the pioneers of processing aromatic plants used fragrant oils in incense, medicine, massage and skin care. India is possibly the first recorded civilisation to holistically treat people over 5000 years ago using the oils. Their medicine is known as Ayurveda which means ‘life knowledge’. Essential oils are still used every day, even in your own home. They are contained in medicine, food, drinks, cosmetics and household products. They are no stranger in everyday items, they just go unnoticed. Aromatherapy is an alternative way of holistic treatment, using these natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. It uses aromatic essential oils that have been extracted to medicinally improve the body, mind and spirit. This can enhance physical and emotional health. More recently, it has gained more recognition in fields of science and medicine.

promoting a better quality sleep and helping ease muscle aches and joint pain. How can aromatherapy be used at home? For safety, we must use a carrier oil such as sunflower oil or grapeseed oil. These are gentle on the skin and also have benefits themselves. Using essential oils directly onto skin can cause irritation. An example blend would be 30ml of sunflower oil, 2 drops of lavender and one drop eucalyptus. Mood Swings! Essential oils can be used to help your mood too! The citrus oils - grapefruit, lime, orange and lemon can be uplifting. For help with re-balancing use basil, cardamon, bergamot, lavender, sandalwood or juniper berry. Feeling angry? You can use Lavender, eucalyptus, roman chamomile, marjoram. Feeling a fear of change? You could use sandalwood, frankincense, lavender, fennel or ylang ylang. For more information, on the safety of oils, how to use them or for a consultation, contact your local clinical aromatherapist Laura Kirk at Sunstone Therapies. rapies.

Aromatherapists work with pure, certified organic oils. The oils help due to their potent constituents. These bind with receptors in the brain that has to do with smell and this in turn affects the emotional centre. The smell and absorption into the skin help relaxation in your body and mind. We’ve all heard of the calming benefits of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), but did you know - Lavender alone, is a great first aid kit? It’s great for wounds, bites, sores, headaches, sprains, nausea, minor burns, muscle aches, PMS, insomnia, acne - the list is quite extensive. There are other types of Lavender, one of which is quite sweet scented and often people get confused with the scent of different varieties. The Eucalyptus family has very strong scented oils, enough to knock your socks off when you take off the lid. The properties for this oil are antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, decongestant and much more. This is aromatherapy, blending oils together. With Lavender and Eucalyptus for example, you get a powerful mix to help soothe a congested cold,

Let me tell you about the miraculous changes in my daughter Jessica! A year ago knowing Jessica was a bit behind I took her to Jo to get help with her English and Maths… Well the biggest changes in her now are far more profound and longer lasting than just catching up on her education levels! Her new development is life changing and will see her through the rest of her school work and lifelong learning. Jessica is a different person. She is more confident, has an increased self-esteem and is very positive towards problem solving in her work. Before she was frustrated: she shut down, avoided work, was negative and constantly telling me she was ‘rubbish’ at school. We expected Kip to sort that out and they did! They are as good as everyone says they are and the move from negative to positive we sort of expected. What we didn’t expect, and what is so miraculous, is that now Jessica understands that she can control her progress, learning and ‘cleverness’. She has grasped the concept that she alone is in control through her input into learning; she can decide how high, how fast, how far she wants to go. She now has so many strategies to turn to if she can’t do something first time that she is confident enough to stop, take her time, try another strategy and then go on to succeed. If she is still wrong she is happy, yes happy, to ask for help. She sees her mistakes and lack of being able to do something as a positive step. She doesn’t expect to know everything but knows that she can find out anything she needs to know to move forward. I know I am rambling a bit, but if you could see the differences in her that I can… One strategy Jo taught her was with complex division. Jessica knows her times tables somewhat. She can’t recite them all, but she knows enough to write down

the ones she does know then uses addition to fill in the blanks. Jessica realised that if she is dividing by 8 for instance she can write down the 8s tables and then it all comes easily to her. She isn’t worried about not being able to do it straight off, but just takes her time. As she says, ‘’I get there in the end, mum’’. So how did this amazing, miraculous, turnaround begin for Jessica? She went into the first lockdown as a year 5 student and used Jo’s flexi lesson system. She had the work to do at her own pace. In the second lockdown she did online face to face sessions and used the ‘ little hand’ on her computer to wave if she needed Jo’s immediate help. In her last assessment she has gone up from being 3 years behind in English and Maths to only 1 and with the speed she is now progressing in a few more weeks she will have fully caught up. Jessica has always had some learning difficulties which is what makes this change in her so marvellous. Before she couldn’t write a full sentence fully punctuated, now she can. Before she couldn’t do basic arithmetic - like subtraction with borrowing, times tables and complex adding up for example. All sorted now! Sometimes in life someone just comes along at the right time, for Jessica that was Jo at Kip. We thank her so much and know that when Jessica goes to secondary school in September she will be at the same level as her peers and have an equal chance in her academic life.

I’m a very proud and grateful parent, thanks to Jo and Kip Call Jo for a free assessment for your child on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611

Summer solstice 2021: What is it and how is it celebrated? The summer solstice is the longest day of the year - that means it has the most hours of sunlight In the northern hemisphere (where the UK is) in 2021 it falls on Monday 21st June. It will take place at 04:31am The summer solstice marks the end of spring and start of summer. It will end with the autumn equinox, which this year falls on Wednesday 22 September. We get the most hours of daylight on this day because of the position of the Earth in relation to the Sun. It occurs when the Earth's geographical pole - on either the northern or southern hemisphere - becomes most inclined towards the Sun. When the summer solstice takes place in the northern hemisphere, the Sun will reach its highest possible point. As a result, the day on which the summer solstice falls will have the longest period of daylight of the year. Our planet does not spin on a vertical axis - it is titled. This means the amount of sunlight that reaches different regions of the Earth changes during the year as it orbits the Sun.

Around the time of the summer solstice areas of Norway, Finland, Greenland, Alaska and other polar regions experience 'midnight sun'. In the Arctic Circle, the Sun does not set at all! Again it comes down to the tilt of the Earth's axis. Summer solstice is celebrated by thousands of pagans across the world. Many gather at Stonehenge which is believed to have been used as an important religious site by early Britons 4,000 years ago. On the summer solstice, the central Altar stone at Stonehenge aligns with the Heel stone, the Slaughter stone and the rising Sun to the north east. Will summer solstice celebrations be different in 2021? This year, keep an eye on the news which will let us know if it’s OK to have large gatherings

Derbyshire author wins top prize A Derbyshire author who only began writing in her 60s has just won the Romantic Novelists Association’s Romantic Saga Novel of the Year Award with her second book, ‘Bobby’s War’ set in World War 2. Shirley Mann lives in Wirksworth and after a career as a journalist, working mainly for the BBC, she wrote her first book, ’Lily’s War,’ which was loosely based on her parents’ wartime romance. Her mother was a WAAF in Bomber and her father was in the 8th Army but, because she hadn’t asked her parents enough questions, she raced around the country interviewing servicewomen in their 80s and 90s to make sure her books were authentic. ‘Bobby’s War’ is the story of an Air Transport Auxiliary female pilot and was inspired by Mary Ellis, who delivered everything from Spitfires to Wellington bombers all over Britain during the war. Shirley was lucky enough to interview her before she died at the age of 101 in 2018. “Once I found out about the ATA and what those pilots did, I couldn’t wait to discover more” Shirley said, “and to get to meet Mary was a privilege…and I came away with a bit of a girl crush, to be honest. She was so amazing, even at 101, that she left me in no doubt that she’d be able to cope with engines that failed, unexpected storms and flying a huge bomber alone that normally took a crew of five.” There is one famous story that on one occasion when Mary landed a large bomber, she got out to be asked: “Where’s the pilot.” Shirley reports that the five-foot nothing Mary took great pleasure in replying: “I am the pilot.” Using Mary’s stories as inspiration, ‘Bobby’s War’ developed as a story of a young pilot who flies dozens of different planes at a moment’s notice without radar, a radio or heating. The heroine becomes embroiled in a family drama that takes her into enemy territory while juggling her love life between an attractive pilot and an enigmatic civil servant. She finds that negotiating a four-engined bomber is much easier than negotiating her personal life. The RNA award judges described the book as “wonderfully written and obviously well researched. This took us on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it, with a satisfactory and uplifting ending.”

ceilings today, but they absolutely smashed them and in an age when we have a melt-down if we cannot share every meal on social media, these women kept secrets for 50 years, they managed for weeks with a thimble-full of water to wash in; they lived on reconstituted egg and spam fritters and they slept on hard mattresses with straw pillows-if they were lucky.” Shirley’s books are full of the sort of details that can’t be learned in the history books such as how they used soot for the scarce eye shadow, how they all carried a penny with them to use in sinks because there was no rubber to make plugs and how they would cycle furiously down dark lanes in the black-out, dressed as men, with a cigarette hanging from their lips so they would not be attacked from the bushes. Shirley added: “The women I met were absolutely awe-inspiring and I couldn’t have written the books without them. They were just young women whose normal lives were snatched away from them and they rose to the challenge- not only that, they thrived and their achievements paved the way for all of us who came after them. I really hope my books with do justice to their legacy.” Shirley’s books, ‘Lily’s War’ and ‘Bobby’s War’ are available from Scarthin’s Book Shop in Cromfordand the Wirksworth Heritage Centre and online at Amazon, WHS, Waterstones, Blackwells etc. Her next book, ‘Hannah’s War’ about a Land Army girl, will be out as an ebook in September and in paperback in March next year.

Shirley commented: “I was stunned when I found out I’d won the award, but I feel my success is due to women like Shirley Mann with ATA pilot Mary Ellis Towho advertise 01629 email sharon@sharonshirleyconsulting.com25 Mary, led the please way. Wecall think we’ve57638 broken or glass

COMPUTER TIP What is your Windows password? If you’ve set up your Windows 10 (W10) computer the way Microsoft (MS) try to get you to do it then you’ll have created a Microsoft account with a password and then, to make it easy to get into your computer, created a PIN. This is a common situation and the result often is that I’m given a computer to fix but the user no longer remembers the original password. When W10 has problems I often need to get into safe mode or the recovery environment and to do that I MUST have that password – the PIN doesn’t work. If you can’t remember your password, go to the MS website and use the ‘forgot password’ process. Failing that the only option would be to reinstall Windows.
