LEWIS Overdrafts Overdras are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re oen far less talked about than the common techniques for cung credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my ps on how…

Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you're not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdra, treang it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.

Get paid £100 to take a free overdra. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdras who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdra. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Alternavely for a potenally larger 0% overdra there’s the www.naonwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. Yet it only gives you this overdra for the first year, so ensure you use that me to clear the debt or aerwards it’s 50p a day.

Use savings (if you've any). Having overdras and savings isn't sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdra at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, aer tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you're £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdra's paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: "But I'll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in." True, but in an emergency, access the overdra you’ve paid off again and you'll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read www.mse.me/repaydebts.

Shi your overdra to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shiing deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdra, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good opon if you’ve a bigger overdra and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a one‐off 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www.mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of geng. If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you'll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with MBNA that's 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-by-step help in www.mse.me/moneytransfers. Manage your way back into credit. Cung the cost of your overdra isn’t the end game, you should aim to always be in credit (or at least always within your overdra when there’s no cost). To help do ask companies you pay to shi direct debits to near the end of your working month. If paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This arficially boosts your balance so you're in the red less - but don't spend the cash. Moving bill dates cuts fees, but won't tackle the overdra. So sit down and do a budget to find out where you can cut back.

Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The opons above won't help if your score's poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending unl October even for those with a poor credit history. The www.luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shiing card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdras. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, day-to-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdra to be repaid by your income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representave APR. "I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back." If you have an overdra the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and geng stung with bank charges – these transacon fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transacon. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no soluon. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admiedly now it's mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: "I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. Thanks." For full help and template leers on how to reclaim bank charges for free see www.mse.me/bankcharges. In dire straits? If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non‐profit debt help from agencies like www.stepchange.org, www.cizensadvice.org.uk, and www.naonaldebtline.org. Don’t be scared to speak them, they’re there to help not to judge.

Dales Directories Will Writing Service

Why do you need a Will?

There are many specific reasons for writing a will, including: Planning a will if you have a family

Some common misconceptions: “ Our children will go to my parents/next of kin if we both die together”

Children: If you have children or stepchildren under 18, you should choose who will look after them and ensure there are funds to help. Unmarried couples: The law doesn't really recognise this, so don't expect anything to go to your partner if you don't make a will.

- WRONG Without a valid Will appointing Guardians, your children will Divorced: You may want to update your be placed into care by the local will to include what happens to your assets Authority. if a previous partner remarries. “ If I die, even if I don’t have a Will everything will go to my spouse”

Pets: Decide what should happen to family pets.

- WRONG Without a Will your estate Will enter into lengthy Probate and Your spouse may not inherit 100%

Specific funeral plans: If you know what you want your funeral to be like, you can detail it so that your family doesn't have to make the decisions.

“ Most of my wealth is in my home - that’s safe”

Property: ‘Joint tenant' mortgages automatically pass to the other owner. If you've a ‘tenants in common' mortgage, it's important to say what happens to your share of the house. If you own a property overseas, inheritance laws may be different to the UK.

- WRONG if you go into long term Care, your home and savings are Assessable for means testing and you may be forced to sell your Home to pay for your care.

Ask Derbyshire Districts Citizens Advice Our Dales advisers receive enquiries like the one below every week: Q. My broadband connection is really slow and unreliable. I’ve contacted my provider who has said I’ll need to pay more than £100 to cancel the contract. Is there anything I can do about this? A. One of the main ways that you can get yourself a better broadband service is to switch supplier. It's become much easier to switch broadband providers in recent years, which in turn has led to better deals for consumers. But, as you have experienced, some companies charge cancellation fees that can go into hundreds of pounds. Most broadband contracts operate for a fixed term (12 or 18 months, for example), and users can be charged for prematurely ending the contract. It is therefore important to check the terms of your contract before entering the switching process. If you are looking to move to another company because you are having problems with your broadband service, make sure you tell them about the problems. Record dates and times of the issues you have had, so you have evidence that shows why you’re ending the contract and switching. If you have already complained about these problems it is worth reminding the firm of that fact. Anyone who has up against poor quality service or unfair charges from your broadband provider or any other business, can get in touch with our www.adviceguide.org.uk or contact Derbyshire District Citizens Advice Bureau on 0844 375 2712 from a landline or 0300 456 8390 from a mobile

Dales Housing – the affordable option for everyone There are currently over nine million people renting across the UK and the standards of these homes vary significantly from place to place. Finding a warm and comfortable home can be a daunting process, particularly if you are short on time and budget.

We also have a number of studio flats available at two of our Independent Living Schemes in Matlock. Our warm and cosy flats are perfect for people aged 55 and over who want low maintenance accommodation close to the town centre in beautiful green surroundings.

When looking for somewhere to rent you might search national websites such as Rightmove or Zoopla. And after doing that, you would probably need to pick yourself up off the floor when you find out how much the rent would cost you each month. You might also find that some of the properties don’t meet the standards you would expect.

Dales Housing, which is part of the Acclaim Housing Group, is a not for profit organisation regulated by the Homes and Communities Agency. We own and manage approximately 3,500 properties in the Derbyshire Dales to a very high standard.

Well luckily there is an affordable solution for residents of Derbyshire Dales, which will help meet your housing needs. Dales Housing, which is based in Matlock, can offer you a variety of accommodation to rent. The houses, flats, bungalows and studio apartments we let are designed and managed to ensure our tenants are happy, which encourages them to stay longer. In the past there have been some misconceptions around social housing. Most people think they need to be in receipt of benefits to be eligible for social housing - well that isn’t the case at all. Whether you are working, unemployed or retired, Dales Housing can help you get a place of your own with an affordable rent. It’s a sign of the times that many young people find themselves in the position of not being able to move out of their parents’ home, despite having a job. They believe that they will not be able to find anywhere to rent that they can afford, so they don’t even look. And it’s fair to say that most parents didn’t think their children would still be living at home in their 30s. An application through Home Options, our online application portal, could see you move into one of Dales Housing’s comfortable properties sooner than you might think.

We currently have properties available to let in Ashbourne, Wirksworth, Matlock, High Peak and the surrounding areas. To register for our homes today, simply complete an online application at www.home-options.org or for more information call 01629 593 200 or email info@daleshousing.co.uk.

Quality homes available at affordable rents, exclusively to Derbyshire Dales Residents We offer a variety of accommodation to anyone who is resident of the Dales, whether you are working unemployed or retired .

Dales Directories Health & Well Being with relaxing music playing in the background.

II’ve been complaining of neck and shoulder

problems for quite a while; it’s been coming on insidiously probably caused from sitting for long periods at my computer desk, and poor posture. I mentioned this problem to a friend and she said that Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner Dave Hoyle based in Matlock may be able to help. I did a bit of research beforehand, and read on Dave’s web site that “To both give and receive Thai massage is a truly wonderful experience. The client, within a meditative state, receives an amazing array of techniques and adjustments, where deep healing can occur, releasing stress and tensions that accumulate so easily within modern day life. In a unique way, Thai massage blends elements of acupressure, Yoga, reflexology, physiotherapy, meditation and energy healing. With the therapist using bodyweight instead of strength and a steady and meditative rhythm, Thai Yoga Massage looks and feels like a graceful dance between giver and receiver.” I liked the idea of a therapy that uses so many different techniques, so I called Dave to book an appointment. I was really looking forward to our session, and arrived suitable attired in loose comfortable clothing for my Thai Yoga Massage treatment. Before Dave started, he asked some questions about my general health and wellbeing, and then about the specific problems that were bothering me. The massage is performed with the client lying down on a futon type mattress on the floor

For the next two hours I was treated to the most wonderful, relaxing massage that I’d ever experienced. I felt as though I’d gone into the meditative state that Dave mentions on his web site. Throughout the massage I felt very safe in his hands as he adjusted my body using many different techniques, such as reflexology, acupressure, myofascial soft tissue release and gentle stretching, all applied sensitively with the use of body weight, not muscular strength. The treatment was completely painless and I felt great afterwards. After the massage Dave told me that I had ‘received’ the massage well. I also now know what he meant when he describes Thai Yoga Massage as “a graceful dance between giver and receiver”. According to Dave some people can find it difficult to receive a treatment at the beginning of a session, but within a very short time they learn to relax much more so they can feel the full benefit. Although the main emphasis in the practice of Thai Yoga Massage is usually on health prevention (as all disease manifests first on the energy level and can be treated there before it becomes physical), it can also be of great therapeutic benefit for a range of specific problems and conditions, such as: Stress Back, shoulder and neck pain Hip conditions Sports Injuries Arthritis and joint pain Digestive disorders Menstruation problems, insomnia, migraine and other stress related conditions. I’m looking forward to having regular treatments for the relaxation side of the therapy and to keep my neck and shoulder tension at bay. To find out more about Thai Yoga Massage go to www.davehoylethaimassageco.uk or contact Dave on 07870627793

Kip McGrath congratulates and thanks their wonderful students on their amazing exam results! Our students celebrated grade Cs or above in English and Maths GCSEs, and lots of grade 4s and 5s in year 6 SATs We had many students who sat exams last term and we were thrilled by their individual successes. Everyone achieved a grade or more above that originally predicted when they joined us, but for some students the results were astounding!

A special mention to Kyle and Harry for their SAT results. Kyle was predicted to achieve grade 2s but worked hard with his tutor Sarah and pulled a fantastic grade 4 out of the hat! While Harry had been predicted grades 2s and 3s but applied himself with great dedication and came away with grade 4s and a stunning grade 5! Well done!

Eureka!!Kate’s brain works at ‘warp speed’ and her poor old pen couldn’t keep up! Kate practised slowing her thinking and the results were dramatic. Kate achieved the grade C she needed and will take up her place at college shortly.

Congratulations to all our exam students. Thank you for your hard work and for being so much fun to work with! Let’s see what this year’s students can achieve… Call Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a FREE assessment (and find out how Kip can help your child achieve life changing grades.)

A special mention to Kate for her GCSE English result. Kate joined Kip in September 2013, very stressed and frustrated with her English grades. She was predicted grade D/E and had no idea how to go about turning things around. She had her heart set on a design course at college and needed a grade C to be accepted. Kate worked with Jo who identified a number of issues which they worked on steadily, but the results though better were not good enough for Kate and Jo. Jo decided to give Kate a simple free writing task and sat back to watch what happened. It became clear that Kate wrote at such a furious speed that her sentences contained grammatical errors, missing words, poor spelling etc.

COMPUTER TIP TGood (free) Software Amongst all the bad software out there trying to scam you there are many very good programs. These are some of my favourites:Firefox and Chrome web browsers are good alternatives to Internet Explorer. Avast antivirus is better than many paid for products. Foxit PDF reader is faster, smaller and better than the Adobe reader. Picasa is great for keeping track of all your photos. 7-ZIP is a good file compression tool and Syncback will ease your backup problems. These are all packages which I generally install on a new computer. They all work well and are free and safe! For more details check out the website.

Support Local Resident To Raise Money For Better Treatment For Heart & Circulation Problems Almost 8 years ago Jo Lloyd from Matlock’s world was turned upside down when she found out that their 3 month old baby daughter Niamh had a life threatening and complex heart defect. Two days after diagnosis she had open heart surgery to repair the defect and today is a healthy and active eight year old! How different our experience was from that of Jo Lloyd’s parents with her sister Rebecca, who sadly died aged 10 weeks, twelve hours after surgery for a narrowed aorta and holes in her heart. In the 28 years between those two diagnoses the tremendous advances in research, technology, equipment and care were second to none. The BHF do an amazing work by funding research and helping to develop better treatment for people with heart and circulatory disease. That’s why Jo will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on October 12th to raise money for the BHF. If you would like to sponsor her you can by going to www.justgiving.com/JoLloyd38

What is Congenital Heart Disease? Congenital heart disease means a heart condition or defect that develops in the womb, before a baby is born.

most children will grow up to become adults and lead full and active lives.

What causes congenital heart disease? In most cases, something has gone wrong in the early development of the foetus. Some heart conditions are due to faulty genes or chromosomes. But often we don’t understand why the baby’s heart hasn’t developed normally.

How is congenital heart disease detected? Some congenital heart problems are now picked up when the mother has an ultrasound scan during pregnancy (usually at the 20 week scan), but sometimes they are not found until after the baby has been born. Some conditions may not be discovered until the child is older or even an adult.

What treatment is available? Treatment depends on the type and severity of the condition. Some children won't require any treatment, while others may need medication or heart surgery. There are also other new techniques and procedures that, in some cases, can be done instead of surgery.

Support BHF by sponsoring Jo to run a Half Marathon by going to her Just Giving pagewww.justgiving.com/JoLloyd38

There are many different types of congenital heart disease. For example, a baby’s heart valves may not be properly formed or there may be holes between the chambers of their heart. For many babies diagnosed with congenital heart disease, their condition is a minor problem which either doesn’t need any treatment, or can be successfully corrected with surgery. Other conditions are more serious and sadly, some children do not survive. However, thanks to advances in early diagnosis and treatment,

ACTIVE DERBYSHIRE LAUNCHES #MYCHALLENGE Active Derbyshire and Jog Derbyshire – part of Derbyshire Sport - are today launching a brand new, friendly, noncompetitive social media campaign to help people take the first steps to getting more active. The idea is simple – share our #MyChallenge e-cards on facebook or twitter, adding a fun, achievable goal for a friend, family member or work colleague to aim for. Anyone who completes a challenge is encouraged to celebrate by taking a photo of themselves doing their activity and sharing their success on the Active and Jog Derbyshire facebook pages. Angela Kirkham from Active Derbyshire said, “Many people lack confidence or are embarrassed about getting active. Too often we worry that we’re not fit enough - that we’ll get out of breath and sweaty, or our wobbly bits won’t look good in lycra and everyone else will be better than us. The message of this campaign is to remember that doing something is always better than doing nothing.” Cathy Rooney from Jog Derbyshire added, “It can be intimidating to read stories about people running marathons. The truth is that the hardest challenge can be getting off the sofa and starting to get active. We find that having fun and making friends and keeping it local are the secrets to success. We want to nudge people towards taking those first steps to fitness.” For those who are already active, we have a ‘Get More Active’ e-card to help you take it to the next level. Why not enter an event, sign up for a new class, set a personal best target or try a different sport? For ideas on how and where to get active where you live, use the Active Derbyshire Online Search. Event organisers, coaches and instructors can also upload their activities for free. http://www.activederbyshire.co.uk/search If you want to start jogging, use our Jog Derbyshire Online Group Search to find a your nearest qualified Jog Leader and group. http://www.activederbyshire.co.uk/jog/group-search
