So who is this ‘Jo at Kip’ we keep telling you to contact for a free assessment for your child? Actually Jo Linthwaite is a remarkable woman who has had an amazing journey through her career to get to the position of director/ owner of Kip McGrath in both Matlock and Chesterfield. She is a local girl who comes from nearby Idridghay and if you did a ‘’who do you think you are?’’ on her ancestors they are all local since the 1400s and one of them even built the village church! Jo wasn’t always in the education business and started her career in the Department of Work and Pensions as a civil servant. For 12 years she worked with the long term unemployed, ex-offenders, addicts and the homeless. It was a gruelling job which required all her compassion and understanding and left her with the very strong personal qualities that have seen her through some interesting times since then. Deciding to make a career change, Jo trained to become a teacher whilst still working for DWP. Not content with a tough year of working and studying at the same time, she decided to move to Poland the following year and do some teaching of English. There she picked up a little Polish, although it was a while ago so don’t test her now! Following that position she moved overseas to Hong Kong and worked with kindergarten children. This was the time before Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule. With a brief interruption to take in Canada and life there, she then returned to Asia and took a position in a Shanghai University. From there her career really took off and having conquered the Mandarin language to a useful level she moved on to northern China to a school with 600 pupils as a Director of Studies (that is equivalent to
a Head teacher over here). A lone woman in a challenging land! From there she was recruited to head up a school in Sumatra, later moving to run two in Java with a total of 1200 students and a much larger staff and responsibilities. Of course being Jo she learned Indonesian in order to be more effective in her new homeland. After seven years, this position was followed by one in Lebanon where she moved into a Further Education college. Attempts to learn Lebanese Arabic were less successful! By now very experienced in teaching and managing an education establishment, the whole world beckoned her career wise. However Jo decided to return to the UK, and Derbyshire in particular, to be closer to her family. Determined to ‘do something useful’ she took on the franchise with Kip McGrath for Matlock and then Chesterfield where we see her today. All her life experiences make her super successful in her results with those students, in her care and her personal knowledge of what it takes to succeed against sometimes seemingly overwhelming situations. These are life lessons she passes onto her students. So if you want to meet this amazing lady and let her help your children improve their educational standards (her average is running at a 2 year improvement in 6 months for many students) why not…
Call Jo on Tel: 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment.

COMPUTER TIP Hidden Menus & Shortcuts Many modern programs choose to hide their menus, firefox and thunderbird being two examples. Pressing the Alt key will often reveal the menu or press Alt+the shortcut key and go directly to that menu, eg. Alt+v will show the view menu in Firefox Many other useful shortcut keys exist in Windows using the ‘Windows’ key, for example, press it along with ‘e’ and file explorer will open. Press it along with ‘m’ and all windows are minimised so you can see the desktop (press it with shift+m to bring them all back again). Another useful key combination is Alt+tab and this will allow you to cycle through all the various open programs. Experiment or look up the many others on Google.

A New Way To Buy Local Food Despite the current national interest in farmer’s markets, the trend in Derbyshire seems to be that they are in decline – but, there are plenty of ways to get locally produced food. Read more about Julian Kelly who runs a Food Assembly in Matlock..…….…. There are many reasons to buy locally produced food aside from supporting the local rural food growing industry. There’s the sense of community, fresher produce, more influence in the local market, fewer food miles, greater transparency in production methods, seasonal eating, reduced food waste, greater connection to food and growing the local economy. Why aren’t more people doing so? The supermarkets do everything they can to take our pound, often at the expense of the food producers and the environment. Offers such as multi buy convince us of buying food we don’t actually need, and that we’ll inevitably end up wasting. The price wars push down profits of the primary producers - our hard working British farmers. Don’t our farmers deserve a fair price for the food they produce, not to have their profits squashed by the supermarket giants. It’s important to be mindful and truly consider the wider impact of the food that we are buying. Where does it come from? Who produces it? Are they getting a fair price? What is the environmental impact? The food assembly is a new take on farmers’ markets, by passing the damaging price lowering role of supermarkets. Through the Food Assembly farmers and food makers get over 80% of the price for every product sold, compared to 15 to 25% that most supermarkets offer them, and more than 90% spent is kept in the local economy. There are 900 of these Food Assemblies in Europe. In the UK last year, the Food Assembly won the best British Food Initiative at the BBC Food and Farming Awards “ for making a positive difference to how and what Britain eats”. It also won the Best Retailer accolade at the London Urban Food Awards.
weekly collection. Signing up is free and there is no commitment to buy. Matlock Food Assembly opened this April by Julian Kelly. Julian has worked in IT for 30 years which has taken him to all sorts of places, but he’s always had a soft spot for Derbyshire and finally settled in Matlock with his wife Jen and Pixel the dog in 2010. He loves good food, and has always thought it astonishing that lamb, for example, can be shipped from New Zealand and still be the same price as British lamb. It's made him realise how very far away that massive, corporate, world-wide production and distribution network is from popping down to your local butchers and being able to influence what happens back up the food chain by insisting on free range eggs or high welfare meat. So when he heard about a weekly pop-up farmers market (through a stall at the Bakewell Baking Show two years ago), where you can order online and the farmers and producers bring their produce to a collection point, he thought it would be a great thing for Matlock. Matlock Food Assembly opened in April 2017, they have bakers, cheesemakers, vegetable growers, farmers, beekeepers and other artisans growing and creating their produce with care and attention, made locally and by hand. You can certainly taste the difference compared to the supermarket produce, and it feels good to support the local economy - not to mention drastically reducing food miles and the impact on the environment. One of the things Julian likes most about it is there's no waste, the producers will only harvest or make exactly what has been ordered that week. The owners and staff at the Remarkable Hare on Dale Road Matlock are really generous in letting us meet there for our collection on Thursday evenings, and the beer is a great bonus too! We're always looking for new members to join and browse the online market (with no obligation to buy) and the more it continues to grow, the more producers will come on board and so on. I think the Matlock Food Assembly is a valuable food-based community resource here in the Derbyshire Dales, and hope we can keep developing it and spreading the word to more local foodies. You can sign up here https://thefoodassembly.com/en/assemblies/9364 and place your order. Or you can email Julian for more information at matlockfoodassembly@gmail.com
It works quite simply - consumers purchase food online through the Food Assembly platform and pick up via a

Quality Workmanship At Affordable Prices Most people don’t have the time, skills or inclination to carry out general property repairs on their homes. Keeping your house in good repair can be a full time job, and according to property experts they recommend that householders should spend about one per cent of the value of their home on improvements, per annum in order to maintain its worth in the market place. Many people have learnt the hard way when they decide to sell their house and the valuer gives them a 15% lower valuation than their neighbours well maintained properties, they assume that the valuer will look beyond the tired paintwork, leaky water stains on the ceiling and semi defunct shower room.

CONSUMER CHAMPION
Hiring a car is a great idea if you’ve got a family, are going off the beaten track or just have an adventurous spirit. Car hire is big business, so the companies can seem reassuring. First things first, it pays to be informed about the typical problems that can arise when hiring a car. Not all firms are dodgy or out to rip you off, but it pays to plan in advance and be savvy.
JAMES WALKER – “FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS” Consumer Champion – the man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints!
The big stories making the news recently have revolved around these complaints: Ÿ Massive excess fees. You may get a cheap deal, but bear in mind that you can be charged up to £1,000 and beyond in excess fees if the firm says your car is damaged.
Car Hire Cons
Ÿ No-existent repairs. It’s just emerged that some firms aren’t even doing the repairs The past few weeks have been filled with they’re charging you for. I’ll keep you posted horror stories about car hire traumas abroad. My phone has been ringing off the hook as on this one. people get in touch to ask for guidance on High pressure sales. You’re tired, you just how to avoid being conned. want to get to the destination and the firm Travelling abroad can be stressful. You’ve tries to flog you loads of things you don’t made it to the airport, survived security, need. spent a fortune on a sandwich and made it through the flight without killing your fellow Our tips to avoid being conned when passengers/family/partner. Finally, you make hiring a car abroad: it through customers for the last part of the 1. Book in advance, shop around and read endurance test. Getting to your destination. all the documents before you travel. 2. Check the excess fees – the higher they are, the riskier it is to take the contract. 3. Consider buying a zero-excess policy (it pays the excess if the firm charge you). Yes, we know you shouldn’t have to but it’s worth it. Buy in advance rather than from the firm – it’s much cheaper. 4. Ask about the deposit. If the firm ‘ringfences’ a deposit, you can’t spend that money. If they debit your card and refund you Please mention The Dales Directory when responding to advertisers

on return find out how long it takes for the credit to come back and if you can pay in pounds so you don’t lose out on exchange rates. 5. Photograph the car from all angles. Be pushy. A representative from the firm will sign the car out with you. Make sure they write down every mark or scuff on their documents and photo the car from all angles too (check to boot). Do the same when you return the car and make sure that you have agreed with everything on the documents. 6. Keep all the paperwork and receipts for things like petrol. 7. Factor in additional costs. Child seats, extra drivers, valeting, all can add up. 8. If you are in an accident, call the police and get copies of all documentation. Make sure you’ve checked with the hire firm what their procedures are too.
If you follow those tips, you should have a pain-free holiday. But if something goes wrong you still have rights. For example, you can: ŸComplain to the car hire firm through Resolver. ŸSend them a message on social media – that’ll grab their attention! ŸIf you have a UK based zero excess policy you can complain through Resolver to the financial ombudsman. ŸThe same goes for disputes on credit cards. You can find out more about your rights or make a complaint using Resolver for free at www.resolver.co.uk.
