Hey everyone and welcome to our relaunch issue! Laura and I are so excited for this new step and we can’t wait to see where this magazine will take us. Laura has spent her Christmas at mine this year, and this is actually the first time we have met and so many memories have already been made in the first few days. Also, I would like to especially thank Katrina Calingo and Caitlin Heartfield for re-designing our magazine and for working so hard through the winter holidays! We are so grateful for you both. Finally, I would also like to wish all our readers a happy new year! I predict many memories from the New Year; going to Australia, starting my first year at University and transitioning from a teenager to an adult (I’m turning 20! Hahah whuuut!?) Love, Jasmine x

I
am so excited to present to you the relaunch of Dalliance Magazine! Jasmine and I have been working hard to establish a new look for the magazine, and higher quality editorials. We have basically decided to turn the magazine into a publication consisting of all our favourite things…and we hope you enjoy it too! Whilst I am writing this, Jasmine and I are sitting in her office in England...I can’t believe after months and months of running this magazine together we have finally met! I don’t think we have stopped laughing. We’ve danced to Diplo together, obsessed over Carine Roitfeld’s life together and rejoiced in her new pair of Alexander Wang boots (Me? Jealous?) I’m so thankful for someone like Jasmine, who completely understands everything I obsess over. We have so much fun together, and I’m already counting down the days until we go to New York together in 2016. I hope you all have an amazing New Year, filled withlots ofhappiness andfun! Ihope youall dream big and reach for the stars. The sky is the limit!
Love, Laura x

is a label devoted to the strong, the obscure and the beautiful. As Susannah Woolley explains, its collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative has showcased its dedication to another principle, too.
W
e fall madly in love with it, we buy it, we wear it, and then we hoard it in our wardrobe or discard it. But how often do we think about where that must-have blazer or new season trench coat came from? If we are honest with ourselves, it is probably less often that we should. Luckily, those in the fashion industry have been giving this predicament some thought. The result? An array of inspiring initiatives are suddenly pearing across the globe, as environmental issues are becoming more signified. Much-loved labels such as Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Ilaria Venturini Fendi are just a few making a push for a more sustainable industry. Their efforts as part of the
...these
beautiful, ethical and sustainable pieces will never go out of fashion...
Ethical Fashion Initiative are helping ensure that the beautiful garments we see on the rack are produced in a socially and environmentally ethical manner. Take Stella McCartney, for example. This season, the soles from Stella sandals are made from a biodegradable rubber, which is capable of breaking down in less than six months when placed in mature compost. They also used an array of organic, recyclable and renewable resources similar to this for their garments. Following suit, one of our favourite Australian designer duos have come to the forefront of fashion industry ethics and joined the Ethical Fashion Initiative. Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, also known as Sass & Bide, collaborated with the International Trade Centre and United Nations agency to create a project titled Made in Africa. The project was launched in 2012 and stays true to the label’s recognisable tribal aesthetic – an aesthetic equally suited to the craftswomen in Kenya who are making the garments. The design duo’s involvement in the project is not a one-off. Instead,it is a long-term commitment to a fair and sustainable fashion industry. The project’s third and current instalment features a limited edition purse, clutch and tote bag. Each handmade piece is printed, embroidered and embellished using sustainably sourced materials. Owning a limited edition piece is always special, but knowing that these items support craftswomen who may otherwise be disempowered makes it

all t h e m o r e precious. One half of the pair behind the label, Sarah-Jane Clarke, commented on the role the project plays in empowering the tribeswomen. “It is inspiring to be working directly with the East African Artisans, and to be influenced by their tradition, culture and daily lives,” she said.
“By partnering with these talented craftswomen, it allows them to support their mediate families and greater communities. It is rewarding to see that their wages ed to educate their children.”
h Parris is the Director of Aussie label Audrey Blue – the first Australian women’s label to full certification from the Global Organic Textile Standard. The label is also certified nder the International Fair Trade Labelling Organisation. Hannah has an extensive background in environmental sustainability and attended the Ethical Fashion Forum’s 2013 Summit in London. She hopes initiatives such as Sass & Bide will encourage a more sustainable industry. “I think what they are doing is great. I hope it is the start of the industry more generally becoming more ethical and making ethical clothing more affordable for everyone,” she told Dalliance.
Sass & Bide is stocked in over twenty countries. In addition to its eighteen boutique stores throughout Australia and New Zealand, it has just opened its first New York flagship store. The spread of Sass & Bide stores is indicative of its strong international presence. This presence leads to the responsibility of setting industry standards and is why the collection is such a crucial step in the advancement of an ethical fashion industry. Sass & Bide’s commitment to this initiative means they are now honouring the strong, the obscure, the beautiful and the ethical. Unlike that must-have blazer or new season trench coat that can easily become lost at the back of your wardrobe, these beautiful, ethical and sustainable pieces will never go out of fashion.

Thigh High Boots
By Laura Woods I think they are one of those pieces that you either love or hate; after all whenever something is fashion forward and a little different, you’ll usually find that. I happen to be on the furthest end of the spectrum, with this one, my love for them perhaps nearing on ‘obsession’. If there is a chance that you’re not jumping for joy over the footwear; and to you they’re more tacky than chic (perhaps with Pretty Woman in mind?) with the correct outfit, the right pair and a killer attitude you’ll be marching down the streets in them, in no time…I hope!
Buy:
If you’ve fallen deeply for this trend; and you have the budget to prove, be sure to check out Stuart Weitzman’s shoe line. His boots come in suede to guarantee extra sultry points plus they are perfectly fitted, with a slight heel lending them to become the best accessory for an winter’s night out. It helps that Kate Moss fronts the campaign as well. She could wear a paper bag, and she’d still probably sell it to me. For a cheaper alternative try Tony Bianco or River Island…just as elegant, but still keeping the bank account in check (only just!)
Wear with:
1. There really is no better way to wear with thigh high boots, than a mini dress. They compliment each other perfectly; and still manage to show a little skin during the colder months. Add a fur coat or shaggy jacket a la Kate Moss to prevent uncomfortability and to exude alluration. 2. For a more everyday look, make like French Vogue editor in chief, Emmanuele Alt, by pairing your boots with everyday staples. Keep the colours relatively in the same shade to achieve that sexy, mysterious feel that the French are so perfect at achieving; and keep the accesories to a minimum.

AROUND THE
WORLD Based all over the WORLD, we take a look at where our favourite models came from.
GETTING TOABBEY THE TOP O’CONNELL From coming in 5th place on Australia’s Next Top Model Cycle 7, to walking for Christopher Esber and being featured in Seventeen magazine; DALLIANCE discovers what it’s like being seen on screen by the Aussie nation. Times are changing rather rapidly, in many aspects of the fashion industry especially when determining how we discover the next big face in the modelling industry. The typical story of being scouted in a shopping mall is becoming rarer and rarer. These days, model hopefuls are taking fate into their own hands and entering modelling competitions to catch the industry’s eye. And with some of Australia’s most successful modelling exports, including Miranda Kerr, Abbey Lee, Catherine McNeil and Montana Cox, all beginning their careers that way, it doesn’t seem like a bad option. I took the chance myself. I was scouted when I was 13, but by living in a country town it was unrealistic for me to travel to Sydney for castings and shoots so, at 16, I chose to gain some experience by entering Australia’s Next Top Model. Looking back, however, I’m not sure whether I would make the same decision again.
The pressure of being a contestant is intense, to say the least. It can be likened to being in a continuous job interview played out in the public eye. While it does set you up for the pressures you are inevitably going to face in the modelling world, the level of scrutiny and analysis contestant face in this fish bowl environment is on the next level. And with mobiles and the internet banned, support from family and friends is limited to two weekly 10 minute, recorded phone calls, making it a really tough environment for young girls to exist in. But I suppose the question to ask is, ‘is it worth it?’ The winner of every series is catapulted to success with modelling contracts, a magazine cover and, perhaps most importantly, a level of exposure that is hard to establish even after years in the industry for a ‘normal’ model. Experiences that money can’t buy are had and valuable introductions to industry heavy weights are made. But modelling competitions aren’t the only option and when it comes down to it, if you’ve got the look and you’re prepared to put in the hard work in, then you’ll get work no matter how you got your start. I suppose modelling competitions are a fast track and in today’s society, where we all want everything instantly, are an appealing option. They’re also ideal for girls, like me, living in areas where it isn’t possible gain experience in the industry the traditional way. And if being on a reality television show doesn’t appeal there are other competitions out there like the Girlfriend and Dolly Magazine model searches that have great reputations. Modelling competitions are allowing girls to control their own fate, and that is a wonderful thing because not everyone has the time to wander around shopping malls waiting to be discovered.

THAT GIRL?
Wi t h her sandy blonde hair, and translucent skin there is no wonder Hana Jirickova is taking the fashion world by storm. After covering the Russh Australia October/November issue, we’ve been eagerly following her modelling adventures all over the world, from London to Prague to South Africa and obsessing over her doodled artworks on her Instagram @hanajirickova. RUNWAY Brows So you envy British supermodel, Cara
Delevingne’s brows and want some to call your own? You can make it happen but before you do, step away from the eyebrow pencil very slowly. Whilst this is a known art-form within the fashion world, it can result in some interesting looks when you do-it-yourself. Yet with these tips, you can master the art of “runway ready brows” in no time. Big bold brows certainly made a comeback last season and will continue yet if you weren’t blessed with big brows, it’s best to start slowly. When using your eyebrow pencil, you don’t necessarily need to colour them in heavily as this can become quite messy and unnatural looking. Rather, take notes of any gaps and then lightly go over your remaining hairs. This will still give your eyebrows strong definition without them looking too unnatural. As you go, keep checking that both eyebrows are symmetrical in shape and definition. In order to keep them the same depth, lightly dab a cotton bud over any areas that are too dark. But if an eyebrow pencil is not your thing or seems like too much work, let me introduce to you what is possibly the best eyebrow product to hit the beauty world. “Gimme Brow” is a revolutionary product by Benefit Cosmetics, a San Francisco-based beauty brand owned by LVMH.
This will do all of the above in a simple brush. It is listed as a top seller on their website and has previously won beauty awards for other magazines. It works by brushing natural looking fibres through your brows in order to make them appear fuller and fills in any gaps. Think of it as a volumising hairspray but for your eyebrows! With the brush, follow the shape of your brow, brushing in slow and short motions in order to build beautiful definition. If you repeat this step on the other brow, it should give you an even symmetrical look. However, if there are noticeable differences in the shape, choose to copy the fuller brow and use the tip of the brush for the finer details. You are now left with full, defined yet natural looking brows, in steps that are easy enough to fit into your every day beauty regime. Whichever product you choose, play around as it’s a big wide world out there, with lots of serums, gels and shadows that you can use to get brows envying Cara’s. But if you’re seriously struggling to get the look you want, I suggest heading to a brow bar where they will shape your brows for you to give you something to work with. Remember eyebrows are important as they frame your face, can make you appear younger, healthier and eliminate the need for excessive make-up.

At Helmut Lang Spring/Summer 2014 a statement cherry lip was the beauty focus with flushed, dewy skin. When trying out this classic look remember – not all reds are created equal. The darker your skin tone, the warmer the red you should choose. Firstly, seal the edges with matching lip liner so lip colour doesn’t bleed. When applying heavily pigmented shades like crimson, start at the centre of lips working outwards with your lip crayon or lip brush. Blot, reapply, blot, reapply again. Repeat! GE
