Brief: Bubble & Squeak

Context

Leeds city centre is full of places to eat, but lacks somewhere that serves all day breakfasts, for the lazy student, the busy business man or the hardworking manual laborer. The concept for a new breakfast bar needs to be established.

Target Audience

The breakfast bar should cater for everybody, aiming more towards students, builders and business men.

Brief

Come up with the identity for a new breakfast bar in Leeds city centre. The bar should have a warm and friendly atmosphere and should be cheap and cheerful, serving up proper English breakfasts.

Design Research/ Reference Imagery

Greasy Cafe

Looking into local greasy cafĂŠs, you could really feel the local friendly vibe about them. This is something that I wanted to replicate with my design.

Wall Murial

I liked the idea of having quite a traditional, working mans feel, but keeping the design modern. I started to look at old wall murials that date back to the industrial revolution, having typography painted onto old bricks, creating a real working traditional feel.

I looked at a lot of white spaces, something that would reflect a coffee shop feel. I wanted the space to be full of blank brick walls.

Design Development

Brief: Bubble & Squeak

Original Design

For my initial design I came up with the name ‘The Union Jack’. I felt it was very patriotic and it reflected the heritage and would be very fitting to the type of greasy café feel.

Developed Idea

I decided to change the name to something that was more related to English tradition, and decided on the name Bubble & Squeak, which is an old dish created from the left overs of yesterdays meal.

Menu & Business Card

Brief: Bubble & Squeak

Final Concept

The final concept was bold inviting, friendly and modern. The aesthetic was inspired by old wall murials, using a large bold font to create impact, accompanied by the red to make it stand out.

Menu

The Menu is cheap and cheerful to help attract students and workmen, and it offers a range of breakfast food to accommodate for all, including vegetarian options. The Menu was designed to be very tongue and cheek, something that the customers can relate with.

Business Cards

The Business cards keep with the bold aesthetic and feature the initials of the name. They are clear and concise and tell you exactly what you need to know.

Finished Products

Brief: Bubble & Squeak

The Range

The products reflect the breakfast vibe that I tried to create. The water and takeaway coffee and tea cups show how the aesthetic can be applied to a range. The design is very simple and clean, and reflects the personality of the brand, and the food.

Alcohol

I designed a house craft ale and a house wine to accompany the range. I tried to keep the strong typographic themes on these design as well as the overall branding.

Exterior & Interior

Brief: Bubble & Squeak

Interior Design

I mocked up the interior to try and create a sense of what the restaurant might be like inside. I wanted everything to be clean and fresh, and very open. I found a small cafĂŠ that was small from the outside, but opened up into a big dining hall which was perfect for my design.

Exterior Design

The exterior is inviting and fresh.
