studio BRIEF ONE

Photography logo I was approached by a friend of mine from photography, who asked if I could design a logo/ watermark for her to use on her work. This was a great opportunity for me to work on my logo designing, something that I have become more drawn towards over the duration of the second year.

would be happy with and could use. I gave myself two weeks to design it as I always think I work best when I have a goal to work towards. My client was very open, leaving me with many directions/ options in which I could take the design. I wanted to create a logo that would reflect Freya’s style and her interest in her cameras.

She did not give a deadline for when she wanted it completed, so it gave me plenty of time to come up with a strong concept and design that she hopefully

walked away with a few ideas that I thought would compliment her work appropriately. I designed the logo with a focus on structure; I wanted it to reflect the angular construction and aesthetic of one of the cameras she uses.

manipulated/ changed as it leaves many options to how you want the logo to look. I used black and yellow as the primary colours, black because it is a universal colour and yellow as the client asked if I could incorporate it.

The way in which I designed the logo allowed for the colours of the camera to be changed, depending where it was being used and for my clients own preference. I liked the idea of the logo being able to be

I really enjoyed working on this brief as it allowed me to design whatever I wanted, for a client who was really easy going, which I believe is not going to be the case for many more clients to come. I managed to 04

keep to the two-week goal in which I set myself, my client was very impressed and is now using the logo on her work. She has recently asked me if I can produce business cards, which I am happy to do. Although I produced the logo free of charge it is handy having her as a contact for when I want to photograph my work in the future.

From this brief I have learnt to develop a clients ideas and aesthetic into a functional logo, through developing a concept. It has allowed me to become more confident when speaking with other people, and has shown that I can present an idea with a reasonable explanation behind it.

Kendal Locksmith This brief was one that I set myself after using the service whilst home for Christmas. I felt like the logo was very outdated, and after looking at the website thought it would be a brilliant and beneficial task for me to come up with a new logo and website for Kendal Locksmiths.

After creating the logo I was then able to apply it to the website. I wanted to design a website as it is an area that I’m not too keen of, therefore a brilliant opportunity to improve my web based skills, and maybe improve my confidence in web design.

As I had took it upon myself to do this, I set myself some guidelines for what I could produce, and maybe after finishing it, contacting the company and proposing my idea could well be an option.

I really enjoyed creating the website, I think one reason is that it was interesting to see how I could improve the old website, to something that was much more accessible and easier to navigate round and understand. I wasn’t entirely pleased with the general aesthetic, but I was pleased with the layout and navigation.

I wanted to keep the colour scheme the same, as they are a local company who are well known, and if not known, the colours are most definitely a recognizable trait of theirs.

The process of this brief was really fun, and for the overall outcome I was pretty pleased. I think I could have spent more time improving the website aesthetic. If I could improve the logo I would keep it all one colour, but where the colour would over lap, have drop shadows. I did originally plan to do this but I was unable to figure out how, when it came to designing it.

They rely heavily on the fact that they are a 24-hour service, so I wanted to incorporate this into the logo. I decided upon using the infinite logo, but made it into a key, with the teeth of the keys showing the skyline of Kendal. The logo is simple and effective and still works with the company’s colours. I used futura as the font as its bold, structured and sturdy, which I believe compliments the overall image of what a locksmith business is about.

I am yet to contact the company to show them my proposal, I have plans to edit the logo before I do this.

Posterheros Competition

There were four sections in which you could choose to design your poster for, I chose ‘the challenge of Biodiversity’. What I got from the brief was that our food is not local and is heavily modified along the way, so I took this idea and tried to incorporate it into a poster that I thought tackled the problem.

I tried to show through my poster that buying food should be of a certain quality, not packaged and mass-produced in a factory. I did struggle with the image on the poster. Originally I wanted fruit and vegetable packaged like a child’s plastic toy on a rack, in a shop environment, but I found it difficult to draw. I ended up playing around with effects on Photoshop, which led me to the image that I stuck with.

This brief gave me the opportunity to voice my opinion through a creative poster. I tried to make the concept quite complex but the delivery easy and simple to understand. This brief was harder than I thought, as displaying a message that is to be taken on board and appreciated is very difficult.

I didn’t want to spend more than a few days on this brief, but due to problems with image, I worked on it on and off for about a week. I wasn’t completely happy with the outcome, but it displayed my message appropriately, and I managed to submit the design in time, so I was fairly pleased.

I tried to design in the style of World War propaganda posters, as I thought it was an appropriate format to get an important message across. My poster incorporates a humorous element but with a serious underlying message.

I think with more planning of my concept, and the overall design of the poster I could have improved the overall message and impact.

Reggae Poster

13

The reggae poster was a very quick turn around that allowed me to experiment more with my illustration skills and digital illustration. I really enjoyed this brief as it only took me a day and I had fun doing it.

and I am definitely happy with the outcome. The process of digitally editing a scanned image can be quite lengthy but I managed to improve my skill and it is something that will definitely be useful, and improved upon in the future.

The poster had to represent what I thought best-reflected Reggae music. I came up with the idea of having dreadlocks dangling down and the words “One Love” written on beads, a little bit cheesy but I thought it best represented the message of a lot of reggae music.

If I were to redo the poster I would either use a real image, or make the poster much more detailed. There is a little bit of blank space at the bottom which I was not happy with, but couldn’t think of anything that was appropriate to put there without it looking like I was just trying to fill in space.

If it was possible I would have loved to of actually had a real image of dreadlocks and used Photoshop to edit the words onto them, but as I didn’t have the resources I kept it simple and drew it instead. I think my illustration was pretty strong,

Overall I was pretty happy with my design, I improved my illustrator skills. I have submitted my design and I am waiting back to hear the final verdict.

Billiards box I took this brief from 99 designs as I thought it was a little different, and it was an opportunity to design for a younger audience. I had five days to tackle the brief so I decided I would try to do it in three.

definitely something I would like to get into more as I feel it adds more of a personal element to the design. I designed most of the box by hand and then rendered it digitally. During the process I can say I have definitely improved my knowledge and skill of drawing typography. As the design was very rustic I didn’t have to get the letters flawless, so with my inability to draw perfect type actually helped enhance the work.

The concept to my design was to have the box to look like a chalkboard and the text to be hand rendered, reflective of pub signs. This was a challenge, as I don’t usually practice my hand drawn typography. After trying it out it is

I think working towards a short deadline puts pressure on my development work, which actually helped me come up with ideas better than I usually do. Small briefs like this one help me improve the organisation of my work, it pushes me to get on with it, pick an idea and develop it until I’m happy.

marked as being ‘too creative’, as they were looking for something more formal and modernist. If I were to redo the brief I would definitely take more of a clean approach, and would stick more to what the brief as really asking for. I think I designed more for what I would like, rather than hitting exactly what the client wanted.

I was happy with my final outcome but unfortunately my design did not make it into the final. The reason being was that my design was

Secret 7 Secret 7 released their competition again this year so I jumped on the opportunity to design a sleeve for them. I really enjoyed the brief last year; it’s one that has a quick turn around but usually with good results. The brief allows you to design a sleeve for a set of specific songs, but when designing you are not allowed to mention the artist or song on your submission.

software. I would have liked to add more texture to the background and onto the gong. Although I did enjoy the brief I wasn’t happy with my final outcome, I believed I could have improved it by maybe choosing a different font. Unfortunately I did not make it into the final, which was a bit disappointing. I think if I were to do the brief again I would spend more time on the designing, I felt like I rushed it due to other briefs that I was also trying to complete.

For the artist I picked T-Rex, ‘Get It On’, as I was familiar with the track, and it was the song that most appealed to me. I went over the lyrics and the music to get an understanding of what the song is really about and to where I could possibly take it. I really liked the idea of including a gong mallet and possibly creating a pattern with this. I tried several ideas before deciding on my final design; the round yellow shape is representing the gong and the mallet it shown to be hitting it. The text around the gong reflects the vibrations, but are also the lyrics of the song. This brief took me a day to complete and was really something that I enjoyed doing. I designed the sleeve all digitally; I tried to capture the energy of the song in my design by the use of the warm colours. Using illustrator did limit my design as I’m still learning the

cHEESE lABEL appropriate and what would fit the brief.

I entered a competition on 99 designs that asked for you to design a label for cheese, reflecting the Australian countryside in a traditional style. The label was to be used over a range of different flavoured cheese, and the brief also provided specific sizes for you to design for. I chose this brief as I’m into packaging design and thought it would be a good experience.

I wanted to give my design a fresh look, with an old-style twist. For a start I added a mountain scape into the background, I wanted to get the feel of the countryside, I also added a circle into the back to represent the sun. My idea was to change the colour of the circle for the different type of cheese. I tried keeping the design circular and structure for a more professional feel.

It took me three days to complete the brief, which I thought was plenty of time. I started by looking at traditional cheese packaging and existing packaging to get an understanding of what was

type for the logo gave it a much more professional, high quality feel. I then added a nice, easy to read san serif font for the cheese type and backed it with a strip in the style of a metal plaque, which I think reflects the working hands on approach of rural life. I added an illustration of cheese as the main image, as I thought it best represented the hand-crafted element of the quality cheese.

I did not win the competition but I was happy with what I had produced. I think if I were to do the design again I would work more off the computer. Similar to other briefs that I’ve had a go at, I’ve been designing primarily for the screen, when really I should be designing for print. I think to improve this I need to print my design off more, feel it and make sure I consider stock and other elements of design when designing for off-screen.

After submitting my design to the site I was put through into the final round where I received feedback on my design. They asked if I could change the mountain range to a more realistic picture of the

20

Cider Label

21

The cider label was another competition that I entered on 99 designs. I really liked the sound of this one, and I was excited at the opportunity of having to design something that hopefully looks good, and is also going to be used in public.

The brief asked that the label needs to be applied to pint glasses, beer pumps, beer mattes and bottles. I chose a round design for my label as I thought this was the perfect shape for it to be attached to the said items. I added my design onto the site and had some brilliant feedback, but unfortunately I didn’t make it into the final. I did ask what the design lacked for my own benefit, and the client replied saying that the label didn’t look authentic and hand crafted enough. They mentioned that it looked very web 2.0, which I agreed with.

I found I have an interest when it comes to designing an identity and a logo for companies, and also with product and packaging. This brief in particular challenged my ability to work with vectors on illustrator, and with help from tutorials I learnt an awful lot whilst designing such a simple badge. I tried to keep the badge clean, simple and bold, as I wanted to keep the design mode-rn and applicable to a younger audience, as the brief had asked. At the top I added an apple and leaves, I wanted to give the badge the look of a crest, as I believed this gave it more of an official look. I added the apple as the centre image as I thought it was appropriate because of the cider. I originally tried adding images of New York skyscrapers, but I was unable to make it look professional so I scrapped the idea.

Overall this is one brief that I really did enjoy working on. If I was to do a similar design again I think I’d take the feedback on board and try to make my design a lot more rustic and hand crafted, rather than the style that I usually go for. I think I need to work more on paper, as I seem to be spending a lot of my designing on the computer. I think maybe I should start sketching out my ideas in more detail, rather than taking rough sketches straight onto screen, I think it would help improve my designing and reasoning.

YCN: eFFECT I chose a YCN brief for my main individual practice. The title was Effect, and it asked for you to come up with a campaign to bring a new energy into the UK’s drinks market. The brief asked you to focus on the fact that it was a creative energy drink, so it was mentally stimulating rather than physically.

sure I hit all my targets and making sure I had all aspects of the project in line and ready for submission. I believe I ended up with a strong concept, which was only down to a lot of development, and important crits with helpful feedback. The brief allowed me to improve my illustrator skills, and allowed me to work with layout. I used a grid system for laying out the main posters appropriately, something which I always tend to not brush upon. My submission also incorporated an idea of having a fresher’s event, where Effect could raise awareness to students. I think if I had focused more on this I may have been able to come up with a better idea than just having a stall, this was down to spending too much time on the posters.

The idea behind my concept was to focus on passed famous people that have changed history, either through music, art, science, acting etc. The can is spilling out and forming these well-known icons, with the slogan “Quench your creativity. “The idea behind it being, if you drink Effect, you too could be a famous/ influential figure. This was the first competition brief I’ve entered, so it was exciting to submit work, which was going to be judged by industry standards. This definitely kept me more focused on the task, making sure everything was perfect. I focused on aiming the adverts towards students who study art and design; this was a bonus for me as I was always surrounded by my audience. This allowed me to get increased feedback for development. I really enjoyed the brief, it allowed me to improve my skills in time management, making

My idea was to have the spillage as a real liquid, but as I started to design, I realized it was going to be very difficult for me to mimic this on Photoshop. I ended up just having the liquid coloured red, which in the end I was satisfied with. Overall I think that I managed to tackle the brief with a strong, creative concept that is suitable to the audience and to Effects existing design.

sTUDIO BRIEF two

32

YCN: Boost Boost was the YCN brief that I collaborated on with Sean Connelly. This was the first official competition brief that I’ve ever collaborated on with somebody. I was excited at the prospect of having two mindsets coming together to tackle a brief. I chose to go with Sean because although we are similar we both have a different style of working, and thought the combination may be interesting.

kept at a standard where we were both happy. I’ve also improved my skill in photography, as this was a vital part of the brief in which we made the bottles work as a set and look good as a product to be sold. This is something that is definitely going to help me when photographing work in the future. Although I was really pleased with the bottle design and how we had photographed it, I think we could have spent less time on coming up with the design of the bottle and focused more on the campaign side of the brief. It was obvious that the advertising and campaign hadn’t had as much time spent on it than the bottle design; I think this let down the submission a little bit.

We chose Boost as we were both interested in picking a brief that focused on product and packaging, something which we both had touched on, but never really properly had a go at. The brief asked for you to design a new range of flavoured water, brand it and then come up with a campaign that would raise awareness of the new product.

Working as a collaboration really improved my communication skills, and I think it really helped me get motivated and allowed me to stay focused on my work. It was hard at times due to not being side to side with my partner and having to talk over the internet, but as a team we didn’t really fall out and managed to get our boards perfected and handed in on time, with an outcome we were both pleased about.

The brief was very interesting and challenged both my time management skills and my design skills. Working in a group was good as we both kept each other motivated, and didn’t want to let each other down, so work set for a specific date was always completed. We tended to combine our ideas together, which worked very well, allowing the design to be
