TALKING ABOUT A RESOLUTION It’s that time of year again… Resolution Time! Some of you will be racking your brains in an attempt to find the one vice you want to give up, or the one you want to introduce to your life. Others will have already failed in their attempt at change, while some are currently living with the satisfaction of knowing that their effort is still a success – it all depends on what time of the season you happen to be reading this article. It’s a time when alcohol and cigarette manufacturers are quaking in their boots and when fitness centres are preparing for a sudden boom in business. Everyone wants to be healthier and happier, including yours truly. Towards the end of autumn, I will have made a concrete decision to give up all things chocolatey; by early December, I will start doubting the merits of my decision (despite an ever-increasing waistline); and by the first week of January, I will be busy finishing off the sweet treats which were left over from the Christmas celebrations. So, this year I have decided to reverse the resolution trend. Instead of ordering myself to do something meaningful and worthwhile, I am requesting that the readers of Prague Insight do something worthwhile, and that they start believing in this magical city! Too often I hear visitors exclaiming how they lack confidence in the quality, value and merit of products and services in the Czech capital. Many believe that what they see, eat, taste and touch is of substandard worth; while some of the more ignorant ones believe that Prague and it’s people are still living in the regimental days of decades past.

Yes, the mentality is different than in many other touristic cities, and yes, at times the service could also be better, but for me, this is acceptable considering the culture is also different, and growing up was different. It was a different environment with different rules, different customs and different job-education. However, things are improving swiftly and modern-day Prague is rapidly becoming one of the most respected and welcoming cities in the world. I for one am supremely confident that the vast majority of shops, restaurants, attractions and events which we have published in this winter issue will all serve to satisfy your needs and then some. So, my plea to the readers is to believe in the city and its offerings. Make it one of your New Year resolutions. If you do, you will not live to regret it.

ourists from non EU are entitled to a tax free payment when buying consumer goods over 2000 CZK (approximately 77 Euro) in the Czech Republic. e condition is that a tourist personally exports goods from the EU. e tourist will ask for a tax-free form in the store. Tax free can be obtained in several different ways such as: Prior to customs clearance, and immediately after the taxpayer purchases his or her goods at the payoff site. In this case, a guarantee is required. e tourist must then confirm the export at the EU border and within 21 days send back or leave to the collection box of the company. Cash at a pay point at EU borders (airport, land border crossing points)

We recommend that you request a tax-free payout on a refund point that is licensed for this type of service and are labelled with the logos of those two companies. In the past, some tourists have received a tax-free payment out of a licensed payroll. In such cases, tourists receive cash back immediately, but the same or a higher amount is debited from the card. e result is often litigation. For all the above-mentioned ways of refunding VAT to tourists outside the EU, it is always necessary to deliver the forms with a customs stamp back to the companies listed on these forms. Everyone likes to save money on purchases, but don’t get caught out. If you are considering the tax-free option, make sure you do it through the correct avenues and make sure you use Premier Tax Free or Global Blue.

ast autumn, in the premises of the Kaunice Palace in Prague, a new collection of „Sauvage Privé“ was presented with the personal participation of master jeweller Roberto Coin. is new collection narrates his vision of the woman of the future. e opposing silhouettes of the jewels are the connecting link that anchors them to the same inspirational concept: two elements, two distinct parts that face one another united by an invisible bond.

e constant design concept evokes a sense of harmony while the aesthetic diﬀerence in the two looks, one more geometric and the other more exuberant , characterises the entire collection and leaves room for the rebellious nature of creativity.

Fashion designer Zuzana Kubíčková was also inspired by the new collection of jewels and designed three completely unique outﬁts for the occasion. All three excelled, with simple but reﬁned lines.

e character of Sauvage Privè is more decisive than ever, designed to strip any superﬂuous elements away from elegance in order to bond with its most instinctive side in a mixture of natural passion and mindfulness, just like Roberto Coin’s woman of the future.

"I wanted these magniﬁcent jewels to stand out, and at the same time I tried to create a universal and chic dress. e geometric shape of the jewellery led me to simple lines“, said Kubíčková, and she achieved what she was looking for, as the pure lines, exclusive material and black versatility created a harmony that blended perfectly with the passion and awareness of the Sauvage Privé collection.

e interiors of the historic palace were transformed into a saloon presentation called „Be Sauvaged“. e Baroque rooms were absorbed with ﬂowers and the unique glass installations helped to further highlight this exceptional collection. ese stunning glass displays were created by Czech designer Rony Plesl, who said „I designed the glass pieces so as not to disturb the beauty of the jewellery Roberto Coin created“. He certainly got it right.

FROSTY TRANSFORMATION is 41mm Royal Oak Frosted Gold Limited Edition from Audemars Piguet features shimmering hammered 18-carat white gold on its case and bracelet, a glare-proofed sapphire crystal caseback, a blue toned “Grande Tapisserie” dial and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating. It took great effort and months of trial and error to alter the surface of the gold in such a way that it sparkles when catching the light, while retaining the soft, clean lines that define the Royal Oak’s form. Visitors may admire more than 200 pairs of shoes and 80 drawings by this iconic designer. But to see two of his latest master pieces, you need to visit the Preciosa Flagship Store, located in a beautiful Neo-Renaissance building on Rytířská Street, at the bottom of Wenceslas Square. Having a Czech father inﬂuenced Manolo´s relationship with the country´s rich culture and traditions. Manolo is a great admirer of Czech music and folk arts and crafts. Manolo Blahnik´s expert team of shoemakers will come to Prague in September for a custom ﬁtting for each pair’s new owner. “While working with this ﬂawless Czech lace and Preciosa crystals, I rediscovered my appreciation for my Czech roots,” said Mr. Blahnik.

Embellished with fuchsia pompoms, more than 100 Preciosa crystal trimmings and boasting a net worth of €5,000, this one-of-a-kind pair named „Shoe for Prague” will remain on permanent display under the grand Marie eresa chandelier, until the exhibition’s conclusion on November 12th. e second pair on display is the newest limited edition of Bohemian-inspired Hangisi pumps, made of dark turquoise, hand-made lace by life-long lacemaker Věra Holomečková.

A Chinese Love Story in the Heart of Prague! e hit movie “Somewhere Only We Know” which was filmed almost entirely in Prague. During the summer, it was announced that Hainan Airlines will operate three weekly direct flights from Beijing to Prague. e flights commenced in early September, and will serve an estimated 60,000 people annually. ese new flights will further boost what was already a growing number of Chinese visitors to the Czech capital. We at Prague Insight would like to welcome our

Chinese friends to the city, and to celebrate their arrival, we have decided to highlight some landmarks and attractions which most of them will already be familiar with, thanks to the blockbuster movie “Somewhere Only We Know”. e film was released on Chinese big screens on Valentine’s Day and according to figures obtained from ChinaBoxOffice, it raked in 40.2 million US Dollars in its first week of release, meaning that approximately 7.5 million people went to the theatres over Valentine’s week to watch the film. What many people outside of China do not know is that the vast majority of the movie was filmed in Prague. Directed by Xu Jinglei, “Somewhere Only We Know” is a double–love story that intertwines two

tales. e ﬁrst is the story of a young student, Jin Tian (Wang Likun), from China who falls in love with a musician, Peng Zeyang (Wu Yifan, better known as Kris Wu) while she is studying in Prague. e second tale is an account of Jin’s own grandmother who fell in love with a dashing young doctor in Prague shortly after World War II.

February 8th, 1885. It is named in honour of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, who presided over the opening. e Rudolﬁnum's Dvořák Hall is one of the oldest concert halls in Europe and is noted for its excellent acoustics. e building also contains the Galerie Rudolﬁnum, an art gallery that focuses mainly on contemporary art.

No doubt, our Chinese readers will be eager to visit some of the main locations where the movie was ﬁlmed. So, here is a rundown of some of the major spots which were used for many of the big scenes.

RUd o l F i n U m is was probably the most-used location in the movie. It was here where Jin’s grandmother arranged to meet her Czech lover, and it was also here where Jin and Peng began and cemented their love for each other. Rudolﬁnum can be found on the street “Alšovo nábřeží”. e building has been the home of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra since 1946 It was designed by architect Josef Zítek and was opened on

e John Lennon Wall appears many times throughout the movie and was a popular place for Jin, Peng and their friends to hang out. e Wall can be found in Mala Strana and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Prague. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been ﬁlled with John Lennon-inspired graﬃti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles' songs. In 1988, the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of president Gustáv Husák. Young Czechs would write grievances on the wall and in a report of the time this led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on

the nearby Charles Bridge. e movement these students followed was described ironically as "Lennonism" e wall is owned by the Knights of Malta, who allowed the graffiti to continue on the wall, and is located at Velkopřevorské náměstí (Grand Priory Square), Malá Strana. ThE B A s i l i c A o F s T P E T E R A n d s T PAUl One of the most beautiful Churches in Prague, it was here that Jin and Peng met for the second time when he was playing cello at a wedding. It was also in this Church where Luo Ji and Shanshan (the friends of Jin and Pengze got married towards the end of the movie. e Basilica of St Peter and St Paul is a neo-Gothic church in Vyšehrad. Originally founded in 10701080 by the Czech King Vratislav II, the Romanesque basilica suffered a fire in the year 1249 and has been rebuilt in Gothic and later in neoGothic style. e basilica features an impressive stone mosaic above its entry, and its twin 58 m towers can be seen atop a hill to the south from along the Vltava River in central Prague. Behind the church is located the Vyšehrad cemetery, the final resting place of many famous Czechs, including author Karel Čapek. In 2003 the church was elevated to basilica by Pope John Paul II. AndA n T E c R U i s E B oAT is boat provided the location for the scene involving a party with Jin, Peng and many of their friends. It was here that Shanshan proposed to Luo Jin. e Andante is a real and fully-functioning boat which provides daily touristic cruises on the Vlatava River. e cruises are operated by the Company “Prague Boats”. You can find the Andante at the Dvořák Embankment (Dvořákovo nábřeží) right at Čech Bridge (Čechův most).

h o TEl U ZlATých nůžEk (hoTEl G o ldEn scissoRs) Also known as e Golden Scissors Hotel, filming took place here on many occasions. e Hotel is located directly in the heart of the ancient buildings of Malá Strana, just a few steps from the Charles Bridge. e originally Renaissance building dating back from 1586 and converted into its current Classicist appearance under the guidance of Ignac Palliardi in 1804 is one of the oldest buildings on Kampa Island. e hotel offers accommodation in nine comfortably furnished rooms with a view of the historical centre of Prague, or in the exclusive Prague Castle View Room (no. 10) with a panoramic view of the Prague Castle. It was this room which was used for filming of the movie. First-time visitors to this unique city often find it hard to believe that it is, in fact a functioning metropolis, and not an expensive backdrop to a boxoffice movie, or a section from a renowned children’s picture-book. While many European cities have become increasingly modern, Prague has managed to keep its authentic appearance, ensuring a visual feast. Trust us, this is as sweet as eye-candy gets! Lets start our journey at the famous Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí), host to the Astronomical Clock and guarded by the magniﬁcent Týn Cathedral. During my years of residence in the Czech capital, I have challenged various individuals to name a more beautiful square in Europe – ey have struggled to produce an answer.

to continue our journey. e square is named after Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of Bohemia and is one of the main city squares and is a traditional setting for demonstrations, celebrations, and public gatherings. e area is lined by hotels, restaurants, bars, discos, retail stores, currency exchange booths and fast-food joints.

Also in Old Town, you can ﬁnd the Josefov District, an interesting historical Jewish ghetto which is unique due to its well-preserved historical synagogues.

From Wenceslas Square, we go to e Lesser Town (Malá Strana), a district of the city and one of its most historic regions. e traces of Charles IV’s developments are seen in Malá Strana, one example is the Hunger Wall. Baroque architecture predominates, but the history of the district dates to far before the Baroque era.

Connecting Old Town with Lesser Town is Charles Bridge, a beautiful and historic structure which is highlighted by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style. Perched on the hills adjacent to Charles Bridge, you ﬁnd the magniﬁcent Prague Castle, the most visited attraction in the city and the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m².

As you would expect, certain districts of the city promote this scene more than others, and in Prague, the highlight is without doubt Old Town Square. It’s here where you will ﬁnd the city’s ﬁnest Christmas tree. It’s here where you can witness the biggest Yuletide markets. It’s here where the sounds of Christmas ring out. It’s here where you start to believe that Santa Claus really is Coming to Town!

Walking In A Winter Wonderland... The Festive Season In Prague by Carlo Divito

rague’s festive atmosphere could install a sense of Christmas spirit into Scrooge himself.

Regardless of your religious aﬃliation, it’s almost impossible not to be taken aback by the transformation the city undergoes during the holiday-season, as certain areas are transformed into fantasy settings which would make Santa Claus proud.

e area is brimming with decorated wooden cabins, some of which sell local and festive souvenirs, while others oﬀer traditional Christmas cuisine or hot beverages such as mulled wine and hot chocolate which help to eradicate the chilly weather conditions. e tree on Old Town Square is transported from the Krkonoše Mountains in the north of the country and is swathed in a blanket of lights. With Týn Castle in the background, it makes for a spectacular sight, so make sure you have cameras at the ready. Just beside the tree, a podium is erected and every night locals and foreigners, as well as many school children take to the stage and deliver some wonderful national and international Christmas carols. Another impressive market can be found at the bottom of Wenceslas Square.

ere is a warmth about the chilly days. ere is a brightness about the evening darkness. ere is quite simply something special in Prague’s festive air.

Other major Christmas markets are held at Náměstí Míru and Výstaviště – Holešovice., and they are also worth checking out. Visitors to the city can also enjoy free ice skating facilities at Ovocný Trh.

When you combine the city’s historic backdrops and stunning architecture with dazzling lights and decorations, you create a scene which most people only realise through a TV screen or a book.

It really is one of the most beautiful times of year to visit the city. If you are lucky enough to be here on December 24, 25 and 26, then without doubt, the greatest gift you will get this year is Prague!

Traditional Czech Christmas It’s ‘Christmas’ for English speakers; the Germans know it as ‘Weihnachten’; in France, it’s ‘Noel’; in Russia, it’s ‘Рождествo’. Here in the Czech Republic, it’s ‘Vánoce’… and it’s a very special occasion for Czech people, so here is a little rundown of a Czech-style Christmas.

or most Czechs, December 24 (Štědrý den) is the biggest and most important day of the Christmas holidays. e literal translation of Štědrý den is Generous Day, and that may be something to do with the wealth of food that is traditionally served up on this day. Dinner Christmas dinner is served in the evening, but if you are expecting Turkey & Ham – think again, because in e Czech Republic, Christmas is a much fishier occasion. e traditional Christmas dinner consists of Carp accompanied by potato salad and is often preceded by a mushroom-based or a fish soup. e carp is especially raised in various manmade waters and is then sold on the streets and town squares on the run up to Christmas. It is not uncommon for some Czech families to purchase their carp and then give it temporary residence in their bath tubs, up until December 24 when the fish’s fate is sealed and hungry bellies are filled. One of the most popular Christmas traditions held in Czech homes is the baking of Christmas cookies.

Christmas Presents After dinner, everyone moves to the Christmas tree, which is beautifully illuminated and decorated with various traditional Czech Christmas ornaments. By the time the meal has ﬁnished, the gifts have already been placed under the tree. Czech children believe that Christmas gifts are brought by Baby Jesus (Ježíšek) who comes into the room through the window to leave the presents. Just like Santa Claus, he receives wish-list letters from Czech children a few weeks before Christmas. However, he is a much more abstract ﬁgure than Father Christmas. December 25 - 26 ese are the real days of Christmas for most western people, but they tend to be much quieter events for Czechs. ey are referred to as the Christmas Feast (Boží hod vánoční), or quite simply as the First & Second Christmas Days. On these days, the locals take time to relax and often visit family and friends. St. Nicholas (Mikuláš) Day For many Czechs the real start of Christmas takes place on December 5th, when they celebrate St. Nicholas (Mikuláš) Day. On the evening of 5 December you are likely to witness the spectacle of adults or teenagers dressed up as either St. Nicholas himself, or as the angel (Anděl) or devil (Čert) who wander alongside him through the streets. e trio quiz children about whether they´ve behaved themselves over the previous year and then reward or punish them for good or bad behaviour respectively. ose who have been good are usually rewarded with sweets or candies, while those who have been bad have the misfortune of receiving a piece of coal or a hard potato.

Для большинства чехов, 24 декабря (Štědrý den) самый важный и самый значительный день рождественских праздников. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and ﬁnished at the beginning of the 15th century. e bridge is 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. e bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas.

ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK

PETRÍN TOWER

e Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) can be found on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square. e Clock is made up of three main components: ‘e Astronomical Dial’, ‘e Walk of the Apostles’ and a ‘Calendar Dial’ with medallions representing the months. e oldest part of the Clock, dates back to 1410. e four figures flanking the clock are set in motion every hour and are usually greeted by hundreds of camera-armed tourists. e figures represent four things that were despised at the time of the clock's making – among them vanity, greed and death.

e Petřín Lookout Tower which can be found on top of Petřín Hill is a 60-metre high steel framework tower which strongly resembles the Eiﬀel Tower. It was built in 1891. Today it is a major tourist attraction. If you go up the hard way, the hill is roughly a half-hour walk. However, the hill is also served by a frequent funicular (cable car) and the tower has an elevator for disabled persons. On clear days, the tower oﬀers a good view of the Prague skyline. It is open from 9am until 11pm every day.

SAINT VITUS' CATHEDRAL

Saint Vitus' Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors, this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country. Perhaps the most outstanding place in the cathedral is the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, where the relics of the saint are kept. e lower part of the walls are wonderfully decorated with over 1300 semi-precious stones and paintings about the Passion of Christ dating from the original decoration of the chapel in 1372-1373. e Bohemian Coronation Jewels are also kept here.

The Municipal House is a stunning art-nouveau building which will take your breath away. It is a major civic landmark and is also one of the city’s major concert halls, and an important building in architectural and political history in the Czech Republic. It stands on the Náměstí Republiky. The Art Nouveau structure is an artifact of the Czech nationalism of the time and carries a wealth of ornaments by some of the leading Czech artists. On October 28, 1918, it was the scene of the proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia. The building also houses an excellent French restaurant.

rague’s Eating-Out scene continues to expand and improve thanks to a continuously growing number of highquality restaurants, and we have discovered some culinary gems which will tantalise the taste-buds and make the mouth water this winter. For me, winter is a time for warm and wholesome dishes and the cold season always conjures images in my mind of Casseroles, soothing stews, hearty pies, delicious dumplings and gluhwein. e secret to any successful dish lies with the freshness and quality of the components and Prague’s best chefs are both strict and insistent when it comes to choosing their ingredients. No doubt the aforementioned chefs have been scrutinising their own culinary literature and perhaps that of their national and international colleagues to come up with some seasonal dishes to delight the palate of their diners. Czech cuisine itself has influenced and been influenced by surrounding countries. In general, it is predominately meat-based, with pork being the prime meat and several of the dishes are quite tasty to say the least. Fish isn’t so popular with the locals, with the exception of fresh trout and carp, which is traditionally served at Christmas. You can learn more about this in the Christmas section of our magazine. Among the most popular Czech dishes are: Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut (pečené vepřové s knedlíky a se zelím); Marinated beef sirloin (svíčková na smetaně) which comprises of pickled roast beef, served with a cream topping and a teaspoon of cranberry compote; traditional beef goulash, even though it basically belongs to traditional Hungarian cuisine. India is and has always been a land of diverse cultures and traditions with a limitless variety of culinary excellence. Many Kings and Mughal Emperors have already savoured the nostalgic tastes of the delicacies which were previously, zealously guarded secrets, passed on from generation to generation of royalty.

How long have you been the owner of the restaurant? Since 2008. Which part of Indian do you come from? Do you often return? I come from New Delhi. We often travel back and forth to see the family and to purchase ingredients and items for the restaurant, such as the spices, cutlery and so on.

Visitors to Prague can appreciate these creations, thanks to the awardwinning Indian Jewel Restaurant, which can be found in the heart of the city’s Old Town.

What in your opinion are the best dishes at the restaurant……and why? My personal favourite is the Indian Jewel platter – with its beautiful array of colours and combination of meat and ﬁsh, fresh from the tandoor. It is both visually and tastefully pleasing.

To ﬁnd out more about the secrets of the success of Indian Jewel, we caught up with restaurant owner Sanjeev Wadehra to get his views on his establishment and on the city itself.

What in your opinion separates Indian Jewel from other similar restaurants in Prague? Each dish and its authentic ingredients are carefully chosen and put together by myself and the team of chefs

with lengthy experience in Mughlai cuisine. Many of our recipes have been passed on by generations of families across India, thus offering an original and unique taste. We also take great pride in our interior with its lovely colour coordination and furniture along with the summer garden right in the heart of Prague. What is the memory that you want guests at your restaurant to walk away with? We aim to please the customer through our dishes and excellent customer service, but also the enjoyment of each dish after recommendation of our staff who carefully listen to your preferences and help to suggest the best suited selection. What are your goals for the restaurant in the immediate future? To uphold our reputation of great chefs, great location and great concept – all of which work together and are dependable on one another. We are also always open to new dishes, but focus on consistency. If you could recommend one thing for a first-time visitor to Prague to do, what would it be…..and why? To keep an open mind – don’t get caught up in one part of the city. e city blends ideally as you explore it through its busy squares or narrow alleyways.

A train or bus ride away, you can spend a few hours in small fairytale-like towns such as Cesky Krumlov, swim in a lake in Lhota, or hike up Jested with its observatory at the tip. Explore!

If you had the power to immediately change one thing about the city… ..what would it be? I noticed that many of the notice boards which navigate tourists around the city are in Czech, which can be quite confusing. Of course, there are always more than enough locals to ask. Also for Czech restaurants to serve with a smile! Is there anything you would like to see happen in the city to make it even more appealing for foreign visitors? I often like to think the city created its 85

However, there is an area starting from the southern side of Old Town Square and ending just 100 metres later, on Dlouha Street which oﬀers all the ingredients for a memorable night on the town. It starts directly behind Old Town Square’s famous Tyn Church at e Dubliner Irish Pub, which oﬀers perks such as live music, live sports on satellite television, excellent pub grub and some of the friendliest service you will encounter in Prague. If you continued on down Dlouha Street, you would come across one of the city’s newest hotspots ‘James Dean’, which acts as an American-style diner during the day and a busy basement disco at night. Take a left at James Dean and walk 20 metres and you will arrive at the front door of Tretter’s New York Cocktail bar, one of our favourites. Other newer clubs in the area include 80s Café and Steampunk which acts as a bar-restaurant upstairs and a club downstairs. It’s not the Las Vegas Strip, but this small section of Prague is a little piece of paradise for party people.

Becherovka’s mysterious recipe remains a secret. Some of the herbs are imported from abroad, and some of them grow around Karlovy Vary, the town where Becherovka is made. e country also produces some excellent wines from the south Moravia region and they are definitely worth trying.

Also be careful when changing your money in exchange offices and find out exactly how much you are getting before you pass your money over. Some can be rip-offs. Public transport in the city is reliable, punctual and cheap. e same tickets are used for trams, busses and the subway. ere is one ticket for short trips (24 CZK) and another for longer journeys with changeovers (32 CZK). Tickets must be validated before travel and don’t forget to do it, because checks are carried out regularly. You can save time and money by purchasing 1day and 3-day which cost 110CZK and 310 CZK respectively. ere are discounted rates for children, students and senior citizens.
