TiME FOr ChaNgE I was hoping that my spring editorial would reflect the season and be filled with positivity and optimism, but unfortunately that is not the case, and the theme of this season’s column once again centres around the subject of “Changing Money”. Unforeseen circumstances ensured that I had to frequent the Wenceslas Square area of the city on numerous occasions during winter, and as a result, I found myself passing by some of the Money Exchange offices on the Square on a regular basis. On at least 10 occasions, the scenes that I witnessed from these offices were appalling and shocking! From the outside, two of the exchange offices resembled Western Union offices. We all know that Western Union is a popular, reliable and reputable company, so it’s easy to understand why customers are attracted to these particular exchange offices and why they feel a sense of security when they go there to change their money – but they couldn’t be more wrong!

Written on the line under 2.7%, there is another line and this one explains how customers wishing to change a foreign currency into Czech money will pay a whopping 27% commission! That’s Twenty-Seven, not Two point Seven! Some would call this misleading. Some would say it’s grossly unfair. I say it’s theft! This is the 21st century. Prague is one of the top tourist cities in the world. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s reputation is surging. Surely, the powers that be can find a solution to this money-changing problem. If they don’t, much of the good work will come undone and first time visitors will never return for a second time. I appeal to all visitors to the city – if you wish to change your money, either do it at a bank or ATM, or ask your hotel for a reputable exchange office.

To the naked eye, the exchange rates on display seem quite fair, but it’s the small print underneath or alongside the rates which catch people out. The top line explains how customers changing Czech currency into a foreign currency will be charged a commission of 2.7%. Again, this is quite normal and there is nothing outrageous about it, but a very small number of tourists are changing their Czech money into foreign money – most are here on vacation and they are seeking Czech currency, and that’s where the scam kicks in.

Hats oﬀ to Pařížská!

was browsing through some luxury online shopping pages recently and came across a story which revealed the results of a survey to determine the world’s best shopping streets. e results were based upon attributes like: Appearance, Atmosphere and Service. As you would expect, famous thoroughfares such as New York’s Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive in Beverley Hills, and London’s Bond Street were mentioned….and rightly so. Surprisingly, Amsterdam’s P.C. Hooftstraat filled third position. What was even more surprising (or perhaps shocking) is that Prague’s Pařížská Street was not even considered on any of these sites. I have visited Amsterdam’s P.C. Hooftstraat on numerous occasions, and it certainly has its merits, but quite how it could gain mention, and Pařížská Street did not, is quite simply ridiculous. As mentioned, one of the categories for judging was “appearance”. ere is not much to say on this subject, other than, in comparison to PC Hooftstraat, Pařížská Street wins hands down!

Another category was service. I find the staﬀ in Prague stores to be much more knowledgeable than their Amsterdam counterparts, as well as being much better turned-out, although the odd smile from some of the in-store security guards would not go amiss sometimes. en we come to the category of Atmosphere. Perhaps I have been visiting at the wrong times, but on almost every occasion I have entered a store on P.C. Hooftstraat, the atmosphere has been close to lifeless. I can’t say the same about the Prague equivalents, because stores on Pařížská Street are normally buzzing I am in no doubt that Prague’s luxury shopping street & neighbourhood is in a league above the Amsterdam equivalent, and probably in a league above many of the other cities which were credited on the list. Hats oﬀ to Pařížská!

A Chinese Love Story in the Heart of Prague! e hit movie “Somewhere Only We Know” which was filmed almost entirely in Prague. During the summer, it was announced that Hainan Airlines will operate three weekly direct flights from Beijing to Prague. e flights commenced in early September, and will serve an estimated 60,000 people annually. ese new flights will further boost what was already a growing number of Chinese visitors to the Czech capital. We at Prague Insight would like to welcome our

Chinese friends to the city, and to celebrate their arrival, we have decided to highlight some landmarks and attractions which most of them will already be familiar with, thanks to the blockbuster movie “Somewhere Only We Know”. e film was released on Chinese big screens on Valentine’s Day and according to figures obtained from ChinaBoxOﬃce, it raked in 40.2 million US Dollars in its first week of release, meaning that approximately 7.5 million people went to the theatres over Valentine’s week to watch the film. What many people outside of China do not know is that the vast majority of the movie was filmed in Prague. Directed by Xu Jinglei, “Somewhere Only We Know” is a double–love story that intertwines two

tales. e first is the story of a young student, Jin Tian (Wang Likun), from China who falls in love with a musician, Peng Zeyang (Wu Yifan, better known as Kris Wu) while she is studying in Prague. e second tale is an account of Jin’s own grandmother who fell in love with a dashing young doctor in Prague shortly after World War II.

e John Lennon Wall appears many times throughout the movie and was a popular place for Jin, Peng and their friends to hang out. e Wall can be found in Mala Strana and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Prague. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graﬃti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles' songs. In 1988, the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of president Gustáv Husák. Young Czechs would write grievances on the wall and in a report of the time this led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on

It was also in this Church where Luo Ji and Shanshan (the friends of Jin and Pengze got married towards the end of the movie. e Basilica of St Peter and St Paul is a neo-Gothic church in Vyšehrad. Originally founded in 10701080 by the Czech King Vratislav II, the Romanesque basilica suﬀered a fire in the year 1249 and has been rebuilt in Gothic and later in neoGothic style. e basilica features an impressive stone mosaic above its entry, and its twin 58 m towers can be seen atop a hill to the south from along the Vltava River in central Prague. Behind the church is located the Vyšehrad cemetery, the final resting place of many famous Czechs, including author Karel Čapek. In 2003 the church was elevated to basilica by Pope John Paul II. ver the years, many famous and respected people have invented quotations to try and describe Prague’s unique beauty, but for me, it is a quote from an anonymous visitor that stands out – “If European cities were a necklace, Prague would be a diamond among the pearls”. It truly is the best way to describe this unique metropolis. I will do my best to utilise this space and create an image of this exceptional beauty in your mind. However, the truth is that ink and paper simply cannot do it justice. What these pages can do is guide you on a journey which will ensure that your eyes will dazzle just as brightly as the diamond on that afore-mentioned necklace – so get your cameras ready! Let’s begin our journey on Old Town Square – for me, the most beautiful city square in the world. e area is highlighted by the magnificent Týn Church – a stunning Gothic building which is rumoured to have given Mr. Walt Disney the inspiration for the world renowned Cinderella Castle. e Church is a visual treat, and this treat becomes even more special when darkness falls and the spires are illuminated.

Old Town Square also hosts the world-famous Astronomical Clock (which was created by clockmakers Mikuláš of Kadaň and Jan Šindel in the early 1400s). Every hour, the 12 apostles emerge from above the clock face and each time they do so, they are greeted and applauded by hundreds of people.

e bridge is 621 m long and nearly 10m wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. e Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world.

Other highlights on the Square include the statue of Jan Huus and the beautiful St. Nicholas Church, as well as several luxury shopping stores which extend even further onto the adjoining Pařížská Street.

Perched on the hills adjacent to Charles Bridge, you find the magnificent Prague Castle, the most visited attraction in the city and the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m².

Another adjoining area of Old Town Square is the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) – an interesting historical Jewish ghetto which is unique due to its wellpreserved historical synagogues. is part of the city also plays host to some of the best bars and clubs. A five-minute walk in the direction of the River Vltava would lead you to another of Prague’s most famous sights – the incredible Charles Bridge.

Around 300 metres from Old Town Square (heading in a southerly direction), you can find the equally renowned Wenceslas Square. Less a square than a boulevard, it has the shape of a very long (750 m, total area 45,000 m²) rectangle. e street slopes upward to the southeast side. At that end, the street is dominated by the grand neoclassical Czech National Museum.

e construction of the Bridge started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. e beautiful and historic structure is highlighted by a continuous series of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style.

很多年来，许多声名显赫的人士用了各种各样的言语来描述布拉格那少有的美丽景色，但对我来说，最好的描述还是来自于一位普通游客：“如果欧洲众多的城市是一串项链，布拉格就是那串珍珠中闪亮的钻石。”这确实是来形容这个独特的大都市的最佳的言语。让我们从老城广场---对我来说，世界上最美丽的城市广场，开始我们的游览。最吸引人们眼光的是宏伟的泰勒教堂，这座壮丽的哥特式教堂，给了迪斯尼先生灵感，在迪斯尼乐园中，灰姑娘的城堡就是复制的泰勒教堂。在广场上观赏教堂是一个视觉享受，

Czech Easter A time of Greeting, Eating & Beating!

ed eggs and whipping practices ensure that Easter in Czech Republic is very diﬀerent to other nations, but it still remains one of the most joyous holidays on the Czech calendar, and is a time for gathering family and friends together for a celebration and feast. A Czech Easter has many religious symbols and traditions, but perhaps more importantly for many Czechs, it also contains many symbols and traditions from ancient times. Most of these weird and wonderful customs are largely observed in villages and small towns. During communist times, religious symbols were suppressed, and Czechs celebrated Easter as a way to welcome spring. However, after the Velvet Revolution, Czechs quickly embraced their traditional Christian Easter celebrations once again. Czechs greet one another on Easter by saying, 56

“Veselé Velikonoce!" or literally, “Happy Great Night!” which refers to the night before Christ's resurrection Now, onto those eggs and whipping sticks! Czech Easter Eggs are known as ‘Kraslice’. e hand-painted or otherwise decorated eggs are the most recognizable symbol of a Czech Easter. As a part of the traditions, young girls decorate the eggs to give them as presents to boys on Easter Monday. Today, the eggs come in many colours and are diﬀerently decorated, but in ancient times they were painted red. e same tradition exists in many other eastern-European countries. e most bizarre Easter tradition upheld in Czech Republic is without doubt the act of men whipping girls on Easter Monday. is traditional Easter “beating” or “whipping” is viewed by Czech women as a very positive statement

of care from their men. In the morning, men spank women with a special handmade whip called a pomlázka which consists of a number of withies (willow rods), and is decorated with coloured ribbons at the end. e spanking is not painful or intended to cause suﬀering and is supposed to grant the women good health, fertility, strength and happiness until the following Easter. After the beating, women are supposed to give the men gifts of kraslice (eggs), alcohol, candy, food, or money as a way of thanking them for their beating. In some regions, the women can get revenge the following day when they can pour a bucket of cold water on any man. Easter Cuisine Lamb is viewed as the traditional animal of the spring, but nowadays it is not eaten by many Czechs. However, many of them do make a cake (baked in the shape of a lamb) as a very prominent decoration on their Easter tables. Traditional food and drinks include ‘slivovice’, the famous alcoholic drink made from plums; ‘mazanec’ (cake baked in the shape of an egg, usually decorated with raisins and almonds); ‘Jidase’ (Judas rolls to

symbolize the money Judas was paid for betraying Christ); ‘Pernik cookies’ (gingerbread cookies decorated with icing). Easter in Prague Similarly to Christmas, Prague is famed for its Easter markets, the biggest of which take place on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. e 2013 markets will be held from March 16th to April 7th. Prague Castle is the most visited attraction in the city. e Castle was most likely founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty (Přemyslovci). A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles. e Castle is open daily from 5.00 - 24.00 in the autumn season (April 1 - October 31) e Changing of the Guard ceremony by the Castle gates takes place every hour.

ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK

PETRÍN TOWER

e Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) can be found on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square. e Clock is made up of three main components: ‘e Astronomical Dial’, ‘e Walk of the Apostles’ and a ‘Calendar Dial’ with medallions representing the months. e oldest part of the Clock, dates back to 1410. e four figures flanking the clock are set in motion every hour and are usually greeted by hundreds of camera-armed tourists. e figures represent four things that were despised at the time of the clock's making – among them vanity, greed and death.

e Petřín Lookout Tower which can be found on top of Petřín Hill is a 60-metre high steel framework tower which strongly resembles the Eiﬀel Tower. It was built in 1891. Today it is a major tourist attraction. If you go up the hard way, the hill is roughly a half-hour walk. However, the hill is also served by a frequent funicular (cable car) and the tower has an elevator for disabled persons. On clear days, the tower oﬀers a good view of the Prague skyline. It is open from 9am until 11pm every day.

HISTORY Czechs gather in their thousands on Wenceslas Square to experience the 1989 Velvet Revolution.

Prag u e T h r o u g h T h e ag e s Prague has been in existence for around 11 centuries. e first inhabitants of what is today known as Prague, were the Celts, who settled in the Vltava valley in 500 BC. Later they were driven out or assimilated by a Germanic tribe called the Marcomanni. In the 6th century AD, the Marcomanni migrated westwards or were assimilated by the invading West Slavic people. According to legends, Prague was founded by Libuše and her husband, Přemysl, founder of the dynasty of the same name. e Přemyslids built two fortresses: Vyšehrad and the Prague Castle. The e r a o f C h a r l e s I V e city flourished during the 14th century reign (1346–1378) of Charles IV. e so-called "Father of the Country" transformed Prague into an imperial capital.

He ordered the building of the New Town and also e Charles Bridge. In 1347 he founded Charles University which is the oldest university in Central Europe. Prague was then the third largest city in Europe. Charles IV died in 1378. During the reign of his son, King Wenceslas IV (1378–1419), a period of intense turmoil ensued, as a result of economic depression and religious conflicts between the Catholics and the Reformists. During the years 1583 - 1612, the great art enthusiast Emperor Rudolph II of Habsburg selected Prague Castle as his permanent residence and thereby Prague became renowned as a centre of artists and scholars. At this time, the city was flourishing, but the goods times were brought to an abrupt end by the uprising of the estates during the years 1618 - 1620 which signalled the start of the irty Years War, which forcefully brought back the Catholic religion. At this time, the population decimated. In 1784 the Emperor Joseph II merged the Prague

towns, which until then were independent (Old Town, New Town, Lesser Town and Hradčany) into a single Capital City of Prague. During the course of the 19th century it became the centre of the Czech national revival and on October 28th, 1918 it became the capital of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. By 1930, the population had risen to 850,000.

Once it was known that Germany would surrender, the Prague uprising against the Nazi occupants occurred on 5 May 1945. After six years of occupation Prague gained liberty only to be promptly swept beneath the Iron Curtain.

However, Mother Russia wasn't happy and decided that a display of military might was needed. Everything went according to the Soviet plan until the toppling of the Berlin Wall signalled that their days were numbered.

Hitler ordered the German Army to enter Prague on 15 March 1939. In 1942, Prague was witness to the assassination of one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany - Reinhard Heydrich. Hitler ordered bloody reprisals. At the end of the war, Prague suﬀered several bombing raids by the USAAF. Over 1,000 people were killed and hundreds of buildings and historical landmarks were destroyed.

By 1968 the city once again began to blossom in what would become known as 'e Prague Spring'. Soviet style socialism gave way to liberal reform and democracy began to flower.

In 1989, after the riot police beat back a peaceful student demonstration, the Velvet Revolution crowded the streets of Prague to bring an end to communist rule. In 1993, after the split of Czechoslovakia, Prague became the capital city of the new Czech Republic.

rague’s Eating-Out scene continues to expand and improve thanks to a continuously growing number of high-quality restaurants, and we have discovered some culinary gems which will tantalise the taste-buds and make the mouth water during this spring season. Spring dining in Prague truly can be a delight, as the increased temperatures also increase the number of possibilities for outdoor dining. Many restaurants oﬀer excellent outdoor facilities ensuring that memorable views will accompany memorable cuisine. e secret to any successful dish lies with the freshness and quality of the components and Prague’s best chefs are both strict and insistent when it comes to choosing their ingredients. No doubt the aforementioned chefs have been scrutinising their own culinary literature and perhaps that of their national and international colleagues to come up with some seasonal dishes to delight the palate of their diners. Czech cuisine itself has influenced and been influenced by surrounding countries. In general, it is predominately meat-based, with pork being the prime meat and several of the dishes are quite tasty to say the least. Fish isn’t so popular with the locals, with the exception of fresh trout and carp, which is traditionally served at Christmas. You can learn more about this in the Christmas section of our magazine. Among the most popular Czech dishes are: Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut (pečené vepřové s knedlíky a se zelím); Marinated beef sirloin (svíčková na smetaně) which comprises of pickled roast beef, served with a cream topping and a teaspoon of cranberry compote; traditional beef goulash, even though it basically belongs to traditional Hungarian cuisine. e charismatic Chef Roman Dolejš has travelled literally the whole world over. He has cooked for such celebrities as Bill Gates, Denzel Washington and the NBA and NHL stars. He was gaining his experience in German-speaking countries and in the Caribbean, where he spent almost eight years. He was the captain of the culinary team of the Cayman Islands and won the "Chef of the Year" title there. India is and has always been a land of diverse cultures and traditions with a limitless variety of culinary excellence. Many Kings and Mughal Emperors have already savoured the nostalgic tastes of the delicacies which were previously, zealously guarded secrets, passed on from generation to generation of royalty.

How long have you been the owner of the restaurant? Since 2008. Which part of Indian do you come from? Do you often return? I come from New Delhi. We often travel back and forth to see the family and to purchase ingredients and items for the restaurant, such as the spices, cutlery and so on.

Visitors to Prague can appreciate these creations, thanks to the awardwinning Indian Jewel Restaurant, which can be found in the heart of the city’s Old Town.

What in your opinion are the best dishes at the restaurant……and why? My personal favourite is the Indian Jewel platter – with its beautiful array of colours and combination of meat and fish, fresh from the tandoor. It is both visually and tastefully pleasing.

To find out more about the secrets of the success of Indian Jewel, we caught up with restaurant owner Sanjeev Wadehra to get his views on his establishment and on the city itself.

What in your opinion separates Indian Jewel from other similar restaurants in Prague? Each dish and its authentic ingredients are carefully chosen and put together by myself and the team of chefs

with lengthy experience in Mughlai cuisine. Many of our recipes have been passed on by generations of families across India, thus oﬀering an original and unique taste. We also take great pride in our interior with its lovely colour coordination and furniture along with the summer garden right in the heart of Prague. What is the memory that you want guests at your restaurant to walk away with? We aim to please the customer through our dishes and excellent customer service, but also the enjoyment of each dish after recommendation of our staﬀ who carefully listen to your preferences and help to suggest the best suited selection. What are your goals for the restaurant in the immediate future? To uphold our reputation of great chefs, great location and great concept – all of which work together and are dependable on one another. We are also always open to new dishes, but focus on consistency. If you could recommend one thing for a first-time visitor to Prague to do, what would it be…..and why? To keep an open mind – don’t get caught up in one part of the city. e city blends ideally as you explore it through its busy squares or narrow alleyways.

If a tourist wanted to visit a town or city outside of Prague, which one would you recommend and why? A train or bus ride away, you can spend a few hours in small fairytale-like towns such as Cesky Krumlov, swim in a lake in Lhota, or hike up Jested with its observatory at the tip. Explore!

If you had the power to immediately change one thing about the city… ..what would it be? I noticed that many of the notice boards which navigate tourists around the city are in Czech, which can be quite confusing. Of course, there are always more than enough locals to ask. Also for Czech restaurants to serve with a smile! Is there anything you would like to see happen in the city to make it even more appealing for foreign visitors? I often like to think the city created its 79

You will no doubt see that cafes and bars are littered throughout the city. eme bars, Czech taverns, cocktail bars, music clubs – all of them can be encountered during a simple stroll through Old Town. However, there is an area starting from the southern side of Old Town Square and ending just 100 metres later, on Dlouha Street which oﬀers all the ingredients for a memorable night on the town. It starts directly behind Old Town Square’s famous Tyn Church at e Dubliner Irish Pub, which oﬀers perks such as live music, live sports on satellite television, excellent pub grub and some of the friendliest service you will encounter in Prague. If you continued on down Dlouha Street, you would come across one of the city’s newest hotspots ‘James Dean’, which acts as an American-style diner during the day and a busy basement disco at night. Take a left at James Dean and walk 20 metres and you will arrive at the front door of Tretter’s New York Cocktail bar, one of our favourites. Other newer clubs in the area include 80s Café and Steampunk which acts as a bar-restaurant upstairs and a club downstairs. It’s not the Las Vegas Strip, but this small section of Prague is a little piece of paradise for party people.

However, beer is not the only drink which is renowned in the Czech Republic. Becherovka is their most popular liquor. It has been around since the 19th century and is made of forty types of herbs. Becherovka’s mysterious recipe remains a secret. Some of the herbs are imported from abroad, and some of them grow around Karlovy Vary, the town where Becherovka is made. e country also produces some excellent wines from the south Moravia region and they are definitely worth trying.

t Prague Insight, we always try to take care of the needs of guests at our partner-hotels. Recently, we have been hearing that many guests are asking for information about jogging routes in the city. We always like to cater to the needs of our readers, so we have teamed up with Nike Prague to bring you some jogging ideas. roughout this section, we have also included Nike products, all of which are available at the very impressive Nike Prague Store which can be found at Na Příkopě 22. ere is no doubt about it – Prague is a visually stunning city and is very easy on the eye. However, it can be very uneasy on the feet - the cobblestone streets and hills see to this. ankfully, there are also a few pleasant places to run in the city, and we have listed a few of our favourites.

The R I v e R s I d e R O u T e As the name suggests, this course runs alongside the beautiful River Vltava. e route runs along the river embankment from Zofin Island to the beautiful Vyšehrad district of the city, and joggers will witness some of the city’s best attractions. Once you have reached Vyšehrad , you can take in some stunning views of the city. It’s a run of between 9km and 10km and its better to do it early in the morning or late in the evening.

J OGGING TOuRs Believe it or not, there are also companies in the city which arranges jogging/running tours and events. You can join the Nike+ Run Club which oﬀers trainings three times per week. T he LeTNa PaRk ROuTe For those who like their surfaces flat, the Letna Park Run could be the answer. e park is a green haven (also beautiful to visit for a walk or stroll) that oﬀers some stunning views of the entire city centre. If you run from the Old Town part of the city, you have to cross the Cechuv bridge and then negotiate around 200 steps to get to the park, but from then on, the route is very flat. You will no doubt meet other runners and skaters, as the route is extremely popular.

Public transport in the city is reliable, punctual and cheap. e same tickets are used for trams, busses and the subway. ere is one ticket for short trips (24 CZK) and another for longer journeys with changeovers (32 CZK). Tickets must be validated before travel and don’t forget to do it, because checks are carried out regularly. You can save time and money by purchasing 1day and 3-day which cost 110CZK and 310 CZK respectively. ere are discounted rates for children, students and senior citizens.
