I was a responsible kid, I had taken trains and taxis by myself because my ‘parents’ had forgotten to pick me up! I am 10 years. I stood outside the foster home with only the clothes on my body. My unkind parents wanted to get rid of me.
I reached for the doorbell my hand trembling with worry. I pressed the doorbell and the door swung open, What I saw was a large lady eating a donut, her donut dropped to the ground, her face changed she looked as though she had seen a ghost, but I was used to it. I guess she didn’t expect a child like me. “Whats ya name you young man?” The lady said in her deep voice. “H-hi I am s-s-sammy Hh-harriss.” I said in a muttered quivery voice. “Well then Sam,don’t be shy be happy!” I nodded my head in silence, I had nothing to say and felt very stupid! “Where are my manners come in, you poor lad! You must be very cold! I stepped in my knees shaking.

I heard a distant screaming , and I think another boy screaming “CALM DOWN!” The big lady called out down the hallway like, “Christine, John! Come here right now, there's a new kid here and we need to welcome him!” I couldn’t fully understand her because of her accent. Two children came running down the big stairs like stampeding elephants I probably could hear them from outside! They looked the same age as me, they both looked stunned, it was obvious they were trying to hide their expression ,but they were quite bad at it! “The boy kindly said “Hiya I am John, John Beake! This is Christine!” “Hi I am Christine Blue.” She sounded very shy but kind and gentle.

At lunch it was dead silent. Until the big lady said “ay where is Christine?” Everybody looked shocked for a second then just kept on eating!” But then John said that she had headed toward the garden out back. I really enjoyed the lunch, it was like it was the first time I had ever tasted real food! It tasted amazing, but it kind of was the first time I had actually ever had a proper cooked meal. I was the first to clear my plate and put all that delicious food into my low positioned mouth! I didn’t dare ask for seconds because I really wanted to see where Christine was!

Before I left with John one of the younger kids abruptly asked how my face ended up like that? All I said was a simple “I was born like this!” John could sense the awkwardness and changed the subject and in his cheery voice said “Come on lets go find Christine then I will give you a tour of the garden!” We searched the large beautifully maintained garden and could find Christine anywhere,we decided she must have gone to her room. We went up to Christine's room and she wasn’t in there either! Then we searched the whole house except my room! Because why would she be in my room we thought. We finally decided to check my as we were out of ideas. We walked into my room and she had got all of these awesome stuff that I had never seen before. I got this awesome wardrobe. The wardrobe had my name all over it and these really cool stickers. I thanked Christine more than ever I think I said thank you more times than there are words in a dictionary. The other kids were down stairs and calling “John,Sam and Christine” very loudly! I asked John if they had microphones in the house, but he simply said “Nope, the microphones are inside them as they were so loud.”

John opened the doors to the playroom again and everything was everywhere, it was like a bombsight. Then I stepped forward and everybody looked away, crying, shouting and laughing at my face, suddenly my heart sunk to my feet and I ran outside to the big garden. I thought this place was going to be difficult and I was going to be accepted. I heard John shouting at the others, his teeth were pushed to the front of his mouth ready for an argument, but I just kept running. Nobody came after me for a while until I heard someone call my name. I ran and took a corner into this beautiful hidden place in the garden. I was alone and listened to the birds, I knew I should have stayed calm and not have left but I just had too. I felt I couldn’t go back, I was so embarrassed! I heard John and Christine calling out for me, but I just kept quiet. I sat with thoughts flying through my mind, questions sprinting past without an answer. Tuesday, 7 January, 14
Then one of the kids shouted “look there he is!” “SAM!” screamed John and Christine came running up to me asking if I was Ok. Then John shouted again “Sam come hear right now!” I was a bit confused because all the kids were around him, so I quickly ran over wondering why he wanted me to come. I got there and all the small kids said sorry, every single one of them! I felt overjoyed. The big lady came running out with another big donut and told everyone to tidy up! We all ran in and a tiny kid called Harry gave me a handmade sorry card! I knew he kind of tried to prevent eye contact but I didn’t really care that much. I said I would stick it up on my awesome wardrobe.

We all went to clean up we were halfway finished when suddenly the big lady screamed “FIRE!!!!!! Everyone evacuate!” We all started laughing and saying “ not another one can we please stop doing these silly fire drills!” But then I started to smell burning and I think the others did to! We all screamed again “FIRE! it’s a real fire!” again and all ran out to the garden and saw the big fat lady eating another donut and holding a big box saying ‘Donut King’ it was almost dinner time and I could not believe how she was always eating. Honestly she couldn’t stand an hour without food!

The smoke was getting heavy and thick and the fire was getting bigger and suddenly there was a scream! “Theres someone in there!” screamed John! Without thinking I suddenly sprinted towards the burning house it was steaming hot and it was unbearable in there! I tried shouting but the burning wood was too loud smoke filled the air.I went upstairs where the fire wasn’t as bad as it was down stairs and I searched all of the rooms until one of them was very smokey and there was Harry crying on his bed and screaming it was the same boy who made me the sorry card on my wardrobe. He was petrified and scared stiff. He did not want to leave. I carried him out trying hard to see where I was going and then I stumbled over a burnt piece of wood. My foot aching to the bone I knew I couldn’t carry him any further so I said “Sorry I’ve hurt my foot you need to walk” My foot throbbing so much it felt like a fire on my foot.

I limped towards the back door of the burning house suddenly a big piece of wood fell from the roof in front of us! I couldn’t get past it. We had to find another way out. We went to the playroom Harry was way ahead and I was in pain hardly walking, tears flooding my face. I finally got to the playroom and Harry was waiting and said “w-what do we do know?” He was looking at the floor talking and pointed to the window. I muttered in pain to Harry to pass the chair next to him even though it was pretty much the same size as Harry. I threw the chair at the window and said “TAKE COVER!” the window shattered the little boy climbed out and I well I slowly limped to the door. Harry clearly got to the others before me and all of the others came running towards me. I fell to the floor coughing of exhaustion and John helped me up.

The big lady was crying because the foster home was now starting to become ashes. Sirens began to wail in the distance. I got pulled up off the ground and everyone put me onto their shoulders. I felt like a hero! I was as happy as a olympian winning gold I don’t know what made me go into the house but I knew I had to help! After I got taken to hospital everyone wanted to come but I only let John. I realized that I had a broken foot from the beam. But my pride and adrenaline took over the pain. I now realized that I had more friends than ever! Despite my face I felt normal in fact better than normal, I was unbeatable and very popular in our new massive house that was to be built. A few times we went to see the burnt house and I snuck away to my secret beautiful hiding place. I was proud to be me and I was no longer all alone.
