Intro “Girls not allowed� is a genius hour project about how girls in some countries are not allowed to go school because of their gender. In the end, I hope my project will make us all reflect and think of a solution for the rights of girls to be educated.

History of education for girls In early 17th and 18th century, women were not encouraged to have an education because it could be harmful to their minds and ruined their marriage prospects. In the mid 17th century, young girls from rich families were allowed to go to school with their brother(s) but they were taught only a few things like french, needle work, geography, music and dancing. They only received lessons on how to manage a house and to behave properly. Nowadays, most countries allow girls of all social class to be educated like boys but in some part of the world, girls are still not allowed to receive a proper education without being punished, killed or because their parents cannot afford it.

Why girls are still not allowed There are a few reasons why girls cannot receive education: • Poverty: Families may have difficulties affording school fees or uniforms, or may need children to work to help to earn money for the household. • Safety: Families may keep their children at home if they think it’s dangerous to walk to school alone. They may also be worried about bullying, harassment or violence, especially for girls. • Local traditions: In some countries, families place more encouragement on the education of boys, and may not believe it is important to send their daughters to school. Girls may also be forced to marry young, drop out of school, and commit themselves to do housework.
