Italy and a sea of opportunities (poorly exploited)
W
e are fortunate to live in a wet country for its lining of the sea, but from the sea we obtain a pittance compared to its potential. It has always been said that the biggest Italian industry should be tourism, beginning from the seaside, on the basis that a large part of the boot is precisely overlooking the Mediterranean. It has been said for decades, but at the same time it has never been possible, even in the case of a truly virtuous political front, as a way of creating real wealth for the country. And if the maritime tourism adds to the historical, architectural, landscape and culture it is easy to understand how it has squandered to date the largest growth opportunities that Italy could ever have known. A global plan for tourism has never been created, and governments that have followed have always legislated without an overall vision and more to the point without a useful investment plan to ensure that the sector could really take a shot at becoming the first major industry of the country. Much has been left in the hands of the regions and local administrations and this has meant that in some areas of the Peninsula tourism has become a driving force, and in others it is still light years behind. Despite the beauty of places. It is always a good time to turn back. Today more than ever.

“New events, bringing boating alive all year” www.tendenzenautiche.it
Interview with LAMBERTO TACOLI
N
The president of Nautica Italiana has decided on more Shows in addition to Genoa and presents a "Manifesto" to the government which highlights nine priorities for the meeting with Ucina at the ministry, he says: “A path has been launched” di Gianluigi Basilietti
autical Italiana looks to a future that is already present. Lamberto Tacoli is the president, but more inmportantly the interpreter of a new way to look at and to drive the industry. The idea is to give bring life to boating in all 365 days of the year. New events, new locations, new everything. In this interview, the president, as well as explaining what is now the driving association, in-
dicates in particular the route to follow. And he does so by turning to the government with a "Manifesto" in which are enclosed nine points. What is Nautica Italiana today, and why the need to create a new association? “Our project was born just over a year ago, when on the initiative of 25 of the most important producers in the Italian boating industry we founded the association Nautica Italiana, affiliated with Fondazione Altagamma. The association aims to bring together the excellence of the entire sector - industry, services and territories - to ensure representativeness of the made in Italy and design the development strategy and growth of the nautical sector, both nationally and internationally, giving back to the industry the high level of reputation it deserves. Our association collaborates with other important companies in the sector, like the territories and regional districts, and operates with a selective criterion focusing on the Charter of values as well as on the sharing of a strategic project. The member companies of Nautica Italiana represent about 80% of Italian production of boats, destined mainly for export (nearly 95%), voice bearer of the sector. Today we have reached 75 members, demonstrating not only the significant and steady growth, but especially the continued interest and confidence in our project. Among the fundamental cornerstones of Nautica Italiana, that I wish to mention, is the Charter of values, as reflected in the code of ethics of individual members, according
www.tendenzenautiche.it
to the principles of legality assurance; the satisfaction of customer expectations, transparency and correctness of accounting records, the correct choice of suppliers and business partners, compliance with health and safety at work, and finally to corporate social responsibility and environmental protection. Through the adoption of the Charter of Values, Nautica Italiana offers to member companies, almost entirely export oriented, a tool that reinforces the image of the sector and it is crucial to win the reputation deficits that Italian companies face abroad”. How do you judge the meeting at the Ministry of Economic Development with the president of Confindustria nautical Carla Demaria, and above all do you believe that there may be a margin for a new and future collaboration? “The meeting we had with the Ministry of Economic Development last September 27th was certainly constructive and marked the start of a process which we hope will be the beginning of a new season. Nautica Italiana, in fact, has as its main objective the interest of the boating industry; I believe it is the duty of all the associations that represent companies to try to optimize resources and opportunities to restart the market, support the industry, and look for new developments. We all believe that to redefine and renew the schedule of boating events is crucial and strategic, and we thank the Ministry for its clarity, transparency and firmness on this point. During the meeting, so calm and open, we analyzed all positions, also highlighting the issues they see opposing Nautica Italiana and Ucina. The confrontation is ongoing, respectively. For our part, in particular, we are working on location and governance: both crucial and delicate items. However, there is the awareness that the objective is to define a strategy together to create more boat shows throughout the year, which are both winning and internationally competitive, as a driving force for development for Italian boating and useful for the industry”. On what basis would Nautica Italiana be willing to find a new agreement with UcinaConfindustria nautica? In short, what are the points that count to reach the envisioned mission? “Assuming that the Italian boating industry and the entire sector need a renewed program of events, in line with European models with which you have to compete, we think that this schedule should be articulated through at least two exhibition events which emphasize different commercial targets: one for small and medium sailing in autumn, according to the position that has always been formulated by the members of

UCINA; and the other for medium-large boating in spring. It is essential for us that the organization is entrusted to an independent and professional third party, so as to ensure the overcoming of partial interests and maintain the high level of quality required to compete with the successful model of major international shows”. The overwhelming majority of your members have deserted the Genoa Boat Show. Do you feel that this event has been outdone, or do you believe that it should be reformulated? If so, how? “The association Nautica Italiana’s position about the Genovese event has nothing to do with the participation of members in the show, which this year could fortunately enjoy the vibrancy of the sector. It is true that in recent years, in our opinion, this format has lost strength and is no longer sufficient, by itself, to sustain the Italian boating industry, which operates worldwide.
Porto Cervo It could be one of the locations of the events that Nautica Italiana has in mind
We think, constructively speaking, that it is now necessary to bring boating to life 365 days a year and it is this concept that we seek with our strategy”. Do you think an event in Costa Smeralda (a world symbol of sea locations) would be desirable? “For the moment we can say that, together with Altagamma Foundation, we are also studying innovative formats of coverage within the main foreign events for the promotion of “Italian Yachting Lifestyle”, along with a string of initiatives that act as a side line to major
7
events, designed to bring boating to life, as mentioned above, 365 days a year. In this context, the Costa Smeralda could be a location”. In Nautica Italiana there is a strong representation of boat producers, but is there also room for rental companies and charter boats in its association? “Italian Nautica aims to represent the entire sector, industry, services and territories. And so this certainly includes the charter and hire industries”. What do you ask Government and local institutions as to how Italian boating can move toward a full recovery? “Conscious of the absolute need to give new impetus to the sector, first of all we ask for a regulatory framework that, by correcting certain distortions, restores confidence and clarity both among the operators and between the national and international clientele. We tried to enclose nine essential proposals in the 'Manifesto of Nautica Italiana’ that represent a package of interventions related to five strategic areas: taxation and transparency; development of small and mediumboating; support to the industry of the Great Yachts and its services; support for marine operators and infrastructure; simplification of procedures. From the 'gold sticker’ that brings forward ramp checks on land instead of at sea, to the suspended controls on board until the adoption of the electronic register. From the creation of accommodation for vessels, to the management of non-profit organizations, to the establishment of a competitive Italian Register for large commercial yachts. We believe that legislation is necessary for professional titles in line with that of other European countries. We demand the uniform application of VAT to 6.6% for the rental of recreational boats and the maintenance of the contractual agreements of the state for concessions to the Navy, finally the enactment of the main decrees of the nautical code in the shortest time possible and ultimately a final simplification of bureaucracy and rules”.

he Genoa Boat Show confirms a leading event in the world of Italian and international boating. The optimism of the day before has been replaced by objective findings: numbers of visitors rising from what was previously issued for 2015, satisfied exhibitors, the return in sales of all compartments and the presence of representatives of the Government (including Tourism Minister Dario Franceschini) to emphasize the attention of the trade association, and an industry not only in clear recovery, but also a driving force for the entire economy of the country. "We are all satisfied - said the president of UCINA Confindustria nautica, Carla Demaria - we recorded a 9.2 percent increase compared to last year: 33,618 were foreign visitors, marking a 26.6 percent increase of the total. Genoa is confirmed to be by far the most visited of the Mediterranean boat shows. 17.1% of the global revenue growth, declared a few days before the opening of the Boat Show was a powerful reminder. Foreign exhibitors are back because finally the internal market is spread out. And the recovery concerns all sectors, without exception." Satisfaction also from Alessandro Campagna, commercial director of the Boat Show: "We are already
imagining the Boat Show of 2017. We have ideas and important projects for the next edition." There were over 800 exhibitors and 1,000 boats in Genoa presented over an area of 180,000 square meters of which 100,000 were in the water, giving customers the opportunity to carry out 2,416 sea trials, a significant rise compared to 2015. "Genoa confirms itself as a global arena for the sector of recreational boating - said Marina Stella, CEO of UCINA Confindustria nautical -. A leading event for international and strategic market for the promotion of Made in Italy". Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Economic Development and Ice Agency, 430 accredited foreign workers (technical offices of construction sites, buyers, international distributors and brokers) were able to participate in B2B meetings and technical conferences organized by Ice Agency in collaboration with Ucina: 80 foreign companies were involved, while 70 were Italian. Of particular importance is the presence, for the first time in Italy, of the delegation of independent brokers of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association, the American historical association that has over 1,200 active members in the trade of boats in one of the most vibrant markets ever.

oating is not only boats and yachts, but a lot of it is also social media. And on this front the 56th edition of the Genoa Boat Show registered a significant growth in data, here are the numbers that confirm it: + 900.000 (about + 30% compared to 2015), page views, + 360,000 (about + 60 % compared to 2015) of total visits and +245,000 (about + 40% compared to 2015) users. The site was visited by users from 174 countries. In 2015 the count was 159 countries. In short, even the people of the company put the wind in their sails at the show. A fact by no means secondary in a media environment where platforms like Facebook or Twitter dictate the rules of the game.

LA SPINA, FROM MYTH TO OBLIVION 10

THE COMPLAINT

The historic yacht has long been parked in Marina di Arbatax and is in absolute degradation: it would need specific maintenance that the owner, Unicredit Leasing, does not seem to want to deal with and so the boat is likely to end
The forgotten “La Spina” Built in 1929 now threatens to end her days at Abatax. On the page to the right is how she is reduced
he boating world has a thorn in its side. Beyond the easy joke, the historic yacht "La Spina" - 12 meters of international tonnage – is at risk of being lost forever. She would need specific maintenance, but not having had a real owner (the boat ended up in the fleet of Unicredit Leasing), today is abandoned, with the bank that does not seem interested in the fate of what has been one of the symbols the Italian Navy. But let's see what has happened over the years. Starting at the beginning. "The Thorn" was born as a big and prestigious sporting project that, in 1929, Admiral of the Royal Navy, the Marquis Spinola, entrusted to the Cantieri Baglietto. A project that became a reality and to which it was assigned by the Italian Sailing Federation, with the register number 1. To understand, we have to wait more than 50 years, with the launch of Azur, to see it assigned the number 2. On this fascinating yacht, which soon became a prestigious fashio-
nable meeting place, were placed the highest personalities of the international society, including the Prince of Piedmont Umberto of Savoy, because the12 meter races became an important meeting opportunity among the greatest exponents of the European royal houses. After several changes of ownership, towards the end of the last century "La Spina" was thrown and abandoned in a yard off the Spanish coast, undergoing an inevitable degradation. In 2005, some enthusiasts bought her and began a major restoration while maintaining the original characteristics of the boat. In 2008, almost eighty years after her construction, "La Spina" returned to her former glory and was enrolled to the Italian Vintage Yacht Association obtaining the new certificate ‘International Tonnage 12 meters’. The restoration, which cost more than 3 million euros was partially financed by Unicredit Leasing. A few months later, some economic hardships forced the restorers to abandon the yacht again which
www.tendenzenautiche.it
ended definitively in the hands of Unicredit Leasing. It was the impetus behind the engineer Fabio Di Martina, expert of Unicredit, a great lover of vintage sails, an expert and a descendant of an important family of Neapolitan shipwrights, that the boat was again recovered from abandonment and paid for, after a quick makeover she was enrolled at the prestigious regatta IX Copa del Rey de Barcos de Epoca which took place from August 28th to September 1st, 2012 in the waters of Mahon. On her return, after a participation in the Genoa Boat Show, she was finally moored in Marina di Arbatax

waiting for a new buyer. Unfortunately, this great flagship jewel of the Mediterranean, which has made history in Italian and international sailing, was, despite the calls of Di Martina, again abandoned property without the necessary care and maintenance this "old and noble lady" deserves . The reasons why the bank does not intend to pursue recovery are currently unknown, but it is clear that neglect is likely; as well as to deprive us of a piece of history of the Italian Navy, this also presents a significant financial loss to the same shareholders of Unicredit.

onaco Yacht Show 2016 marks the debut of Columbus Yachts 40M Sport Hybrid, environmentally friendly choice of Yacht Columbus, the brand of Palumbo Group Spa. The innovative motor winner of numerous awards, and the yacht "Divine" is underlines the high performance of the Palumbo brand; it is a "Hybrid", offering an environmentally friendly way to navigate lightly, thanks to the aluminum hull. M / Y Divine has three bridges, five rooms for 10 persons, a ship owner suite with a study on the main deck and accommodates eight crew members. To reduce the mass of the side of the hull structure and offer an undisturbed view from the main living room, the sides are equipped with opening and sliding windows. With open doors and lower balconies, the
lounge becomes a floating terrace. The interior design aims for maximum comfort and luxurious minimalist styles. From a technical standpoint, Columbus Yachts 40M Sport Hybrid is a double edged semi-planing hull that allows you to cruise and is suitable for all sea conditions. This is also thanks to the particular design of the tunnel for the propellers and the addition of an interceptor. Powered by an advanced hybrid propulsion system, the performance of the yacht ranges from 3 to 20 knots. At a cruising speed of 15 knots the fuel consumption is 215 liters / hour for both engines. The electric / diesel hybrid propulsion system allows the combination between the motors, thus allowing an electrically powered navigation to a maximum speed of 8 nodes by using the energy produced by generators, or to produce power when the motors are in operation.

W
hen you say Sardinia you immediately think to summer, the beach, to the parties and dream destinations frequented by the jet setter. If we try for a moment to give up this ideal we can discover that the island is much more and it is all to be found. Starting from Gallura and another 4 sections of the region, the green train is a narrow-gauge railway of the last century, with locomotives that still travel by steam or coal. The landscape you pass through cannot be reached in any other way, and the train moves slowly. The journey fills the eyes with the green of the dense vegetation and woods, granite mountains, rivers in the folds of the rocks, and you can admire the endless expanses of cork "undressed" of its bark, which will be brought to Calangianus, where his factory produces semi-fini-
shed works, plugs and even new generation fabrics with this raw material. But Sardinia is also a rich land of mystery and esotericism, because it still does not appear to comprehend the connection with ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, and there are those who assume the island as the lost Atlantis. It seems that all the graves of the Giants and the cult locations of millennial worship have a particular alignment with the stars, places that are a focal point of earth energies. It seems that these places, wrapped in a constant silence, have healing properties. How can we explain the high level of skill in the creation of the 38 Giants of Mont'e Prama? Considered the oldest in the Mediterranean (XI sec. B.C.) found recently in Sinis, the decorations on the face seem to be carved by laser with high precision; more still, how can we not find similarities between the Sumerian ziggurat and the Sas-

sari "pyramid" of Monte d’Accoddi? Officially it is not said out loud, but the unavoidable curiosity rises to see them. The wild charm is everywhere in the Barbagia region, already called Barbaria (or Barbarity) by the Romans, because as an area it has always been incomprehensible to any who saw it. The people never folded, and nobody won throughout the course of history. There are many stories handed down about bandits, outlaws and politically motivated kidnappings. The Barbaricini do not say such things, but draw directly on the wall for all to see. In every town you can admire murals (Sardinian expressions exported to the world) and Orgosolo is the capital. But it is also a place where the wildlife and rugged mountains make it unique to get lost among the highest canyon in Europe (of Gorroppu), underground rivers (of Golgone) and Nuragic civilizations atop the highest peaks of the region (and Tiscali Gennargentu); a place where they party for more than three months without interruption with typical costumes, open courtyards, masks, local products and excellent Cannonau rivers. But it does not end there, in the far south is the melancholic charm of sulcis, which has always been desired by the ancients for the strategic nature of its ports, but especially for the enormous mineral wealth and coal deposits. Today, you hardly see anything of these activities, but the largest mining park in Europe under

ortes Apertas is an event that takes place on weekends between September and December in 27 boroughs in the Province of Nuoro. Each week, in a different town, the historic homes of each location open their courtyards and among them a gastronomic and artistic journey plays out. In time the event has become one of the most important dates in central Sardinia. Within these houses traditional crafts are shown, while in the village squares folk performances of dances and folk songs are set up; all is accompanied with excellent local delicacies, wine and desserts. They are open to visitors to show the everyday rural life, all embellished by the ornaments of the country, traditional clothes, dances and ... a world to discover and enjoy.

And what about the island of San Pietro, where they speak a unique language (tabarquino, a mix of Genoa, Cagliari and Tunisia), where there is the most delicious tuna in all the world, and where there is still the tradition the old tuna fishery, now disappeared from the rest of our beautiful country. There is so much more to tell. But let's leave this story as an appetizer. Sardinia has to be seen, discovered, enjoyed, danced, sang, fought, looked at deeply, touched by hand. It is difficult to grasp the essence. But it is even more so addictive once known.

n a world increasingly fast and attentive to the needs of obtaining definite and immediate answers, here boating is being organized to keep up with the times. Among the new information, we present a whole Sardinian reality. Let's talk about Marinanow, a young and dynamic ‘start up’ entrepreneur that has enormous potential. It is an online platform to find realtime berths, in contact with the marinas of more than 1,300 ports, and rental boats across the Mediterranean. A sort of "booking.com" or "air bnb" in the nautical world.Through a downloadable application on your smartphone, you can book, call, choose, pay and confirm a boat or berth with a simple click. Marinanow does the rest. But how does it work? All is explained in the following interview with Alessandro Sestini, CEO of the
company. How, when and where did the project begin and who are the actors? “Marinanow was created in 2012 in Cannigione. The idea of the three founders of the company, who have spent many years working in the world of sailing both as skippers and as port operators, noted enormous difficulties by boaters in the booking of berths in marinas. So we decided to develop an online booking to solve this problem. From the beginning to the present, Marinanow has become a transactional hub that connects the boats synergies and berths giving their customers the best solutions for living wonderful experiences by boat, while its partners give a very effective tool to optimize operational work processes”. What are the keywords of your sudden success?
“Constant innovation, knowledge of the marine market, experience in the IT sector”. The future is online? “Definitely yes, clarity and transparency of information has now become critical”. You have only recently collaborated with Marinasarda, what is it and what are the objectives to be pursued together? “The purpose of our hub is to optimize costs and work processes, but at the same time to increase the customer base for our partners, which is very well managed with Marinasarda”. What is your future step? “Becoming a reference hub for the marine market in the Mediterranean by 2020”.

Cruises, Tunisia returns as a destination
“Sicily under the sea”: art and chronicles
Dear lovers of cruises, we have good news for you: the Tunisian Minister of Tourism and Handicraft, Salma Elloumi Rekik, announced to the world the recovery of the arrival and departure of cruise ships in Tunisia starting from this month. This is because all the shipping companies had been forced to suspend Tunisia as a destination in March last year, following the terrorist attack at the Bardo Museum. The minister also added that the tourist season in 2016 showed some improvements, especially in the second half of the year.
A boom in views for "Sicily under the sea" by Domenico Pellegrino: the work proposed by the artist is ‘a Sicily of light’, typical in its popular iconography, which harks back to the carts and lights of the days of celebration, a Sicily that from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea illuminates the souls of those who pass through. The work has a strong emotional impact, referring to both the art itself as well as the chronicle. In fact, the idea that something can shine in a place where you consume human tragedy every day doesn’t only have an artistic value but also that of true reflection.
BARCOLANA, ALFA ROMEO WINS OVER MAXI JENA
T
o win the 48th edition of the Barcolana, which took place in Triste from September 30th to October 9th, at the conclusion of the historic European regatta, was Alfa Romeo, with a time of 59 minutes and 59 seconds. The race was characterized, until the third tour, as an exciting challenge between two with Maxi Jena surpassing Mitja Kosmina, thus stepping onto the second step of the podium for the ninth time. After a constant chase between Alfa Romeo and Maxi Jena tempus fugit, the boat Kosmina, due to a problem with the mainsail, slowed down, allowing Alfa Romeo to overtake. The detachment increased on the third tour, with Alfa Romeo in the lead towards the finish line. And so for Maxi Jena yet another second place at the Autumn Cup. Third to cross the finish line was Pendragon. Fourth place went to Mrs Seven, then Adriatic Europa, Idrusa and Shining. On the starting line there were as many as 1758 boats, a thousand of which reached the finish line.
Soldini's boat can fly
A Charter for the citizens of the sea
The boat show the Grand Pavois de La Rochelle, which was held from late September to 3rd October, has had great resonance this year, not only for the boats and the new exhibits, but also for drafting a new charter: the Charter of the responsible recreational boater. This paper contains only recommendations, which the majority of sea goers know already but often do not respect. It contains the fundamental principles of duties that every lover of the sea using a boat in the harbor, at sea and at anchor must respect.
The Maserati Multi70 moored at the harbor of Monte Carlo, which can exceed 40 knots (almost 80 km / h), is the trimaran with which Giovanni Soldini, international male symbol of Vela, will attempt the most difficult and fascinating challenge of his career: to fly in the open sea outside of protected waters. This moment can be considered a revolution. Soldini said “We are ready for the ocean”. The boat, using an innovative combination of rudder, fin and foil can literally fly over the waves.
