he new councilor for tourism in the municipality of Arzachena, among the many tasks at hand, also brings the creation of an event dedicated to the renowned boating found in Costa Smeralda. This is not the first time that a similar proposal comes from the island, usually resulting in nothing, but this time the idea may (and hopefully will) turn into a reality. The cautious optimism is based on two seemingly positive economic trends. First: the councilor has a full mandate ahead of him, and therefore the time needed to plan and follow up the proposal; second: unlike the those of the past, today there may be entrepreneurial groups who want to engage in such a project. Diplomacy is in course and, as soon as possible, it is to be put on the public and private table so that we can find a combined point from which to embark on what, in a short time, would in our opinion become one of the most glamorous and important world events. Having a location like Porto Cervo would immediately receive an unprompted media call. Of course, an event like this cannot wait 5 years, but at the most 5 months.

57th edition: 21-26 September

BOAT SHOW, NEW APPEAL There will be 8% more exhibitors compared to a year ago The return and launch of 70 brands

T

he 57th edition of the Boat Show, organized in Genoa from 21 to 26 September by Ucina Confindustria Nautica, is already a success before beginning, at least so it appears by the numbers. And let's just begin with them to recount what’s happening with the Show that, in a few days, will open its doors. The installation, which visitors to the Boat Show will be able to admire, will be made up of 57 wooden trees that are to represent each edition. The President of Ucina, Carla Demaria, underlines the great work of Confindustria boating in the realization of this Boat Show, focusing on the numbers “that confirm without question the importance of the event: there will be 8% more exhibitors than last year, a 10% increase in arrivals from abroad, boats exhibited are to rise by +8% and 80 units more showing in water. Plus the return or the launch of 70 brands, a reason for great satisfaction”. Among them is that of Azimut. To give even greater strength to the value of the numbers, the sales director of the Show, Alessandro Campagna, thinks: “The sailboat shows a + 3.5% increase, the inboard is at + 14% and the pneumatic boat - of which Italy is the first manufacturer to the world - at + 9%. What is also significant is the increase in the accessories and components sector that, this year, will be 11.8% more than in 2016”. The figures thus come together with the considerations, starting with those policies and links to the business of the industry. And here's how Ligurian administra-

tors and President Demaria approached the upcoming event. Let's start with the Lady of boating: “Local authorities have recognized the value of Ucina as the organizer of the show. This is the Show of Confindustria where Ucina works all year round to offer a tool not only to the members but to all the companies in the sector. We have been experiencing a different and positive momentum over the years and this is also thanks to the market, whose recovery is solid”, explains Demaria. And as for what the mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci, has to say: “For us in Genoa, the Boat Show has always been the most beautiful event of the year. We want those who come to the Show to have the opportunity to see a beautiful city. The rich offer of events means that Genoa loves the Boat Show. The wind has changed; the Show is an opportunity to bring many from outside of the city to grow together with us”. So much so that in this 57th edition, thanks to

the program of Genovainblu, the somewhat out-of-the-way gymnasium of Genova, the city will be entertained with extraordinary openings and dedicated events. Among the many initiatives, “Museums at 1 euro”, the preview of the Rolli Days and the European Heritage Days that will open the doors of the most sumptuous Genoese historic homes, while the Carlo Felice Theater will feature a show dedicated to Paolo Villaggio and a violin concert of the master Spivakov. The governor of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, points out how “the trust in the future of the city and of boating has grown immensely. It will be a turning point for Genoa that wants to be the capital of the Mediterranean. We want to create a model of economic development around the Boat Show that lives all year round”. Words that encourage Paolo Odone, number one in the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa, to say that “the enthusiasm of the institutions provides clear

osta Edutainment awaits visitors of the 57th Boat Show with a sea of novelties and promotions: from the new arrivals at the Aquarium of Genoa - a specimen of papua penguin, a small commonhaired male - at the events for you to discover all the curiosity of host animals. The hall of the ship owners, the permanent exhibition "Andrea Doria, the most beautiful ship in the world" and the current "Imaginary Fundamentals", are the latest novelties of the Galata Museo del Mare. Throughout the 57th Edition the two structures offer visitors and exhibitors some interesting promotions: the aquarium reserves 5 euro discount on all price ranges, on the Acquario di Genova, GalatAquario, Pianeta Acquario and AquarioVillage; at the Galata Museo del Mare visitors and exhibitors benefit from a special entrance fee of 5 euros. Promotions are valid from 21 to 30 September. The PaleoAcquarium exhibition can also be visited with a special 4 euro discount on presentation of the Boat Show ticket or exhibit title for exhibitors.

hope. It will be the show of a new start”. One of the most significant novelties this year will be the “Piazza del Vento”, or “Wind Square”. To explain what this is all about, think of architect Paolo Brescia, author, together with the OBR team of the project, born from Renzo Piano's inspiration, as an ideal contribution to the 57th Boat Show and the city of Genoa."The intervention, strongly advocated by Ucina Confindustria boating, and with the support of the institutions, explained Brescia, is the legacy of the Show to the city: an installation created for a temporary event that becomes a permanent work, able to create a public space in which to celebrate the rite of urbanity on the sea, thus sanctioning the enduring link between the Show and Genoa."Last but not least, a mention for the kermesse partners and here is the word of Campagnia: "I thank all those who will be by our side in this edition of the show, starting with Honda, the official car of the event, and also to Banca Carige, DHL, Fastweb, Capoferri, Isdin, Subito, Vision Ottica and Technical Partners Eataly, Campagnia dei Caraibi, Go Pro, GiPlanet”.

T

he Azimut Grande 35Metri is the new flagship of the Grande Collection, the most exclusive line of Azimut Yachts. Along with three other models, it was presented at the Cannes Boat Show. This yacht, thanks to its carbon fiber technology, and the hand of Stefano Righini who designed the outlines and created the concept, offers unrivaled solutions for a boat of this size, creating a masterpiece of style and space. The profile of the boat is that of a Wide Body RPH (raised pilot house) with an extremely sleek exterior design, characterized by full height windows with special dimensions, both in the bow and in the lounge area. The only boat of its kind to add the option of an additional sundeck of nearly 30 square meters, placed on a third level and accessible from the stern of the upper deck. All the superstructures and hard-tops are made of pure carbon fiber, which is used by Azimut to achieve more voluminous structures, and therefore offer more space and comfort without adding weight to the boat. The Grande 35Metri holds the fea-

tures of a superyacht of much larger dimensions, such as the garage placed sideways to hold a 5 meter yacht plus 3,25-meter jet-ski. In this way the stern remains completely free and thanks to the large swinging platform you get a 12 square foot beach area. A second stunning lounge area or beach club is located in the bow (30 square meters excluding lateral walking areas), consisting of sofas, chairs and a hot tub. The latter is complemented by an area in front that can be raised with an electrohydraulic mechanism, unveiling the work area hidden from view. The trapezoidal bow allows you to have a large decking to give more comfort to the entire area, both in mooring and operations at sea. The design of the interior of the 35mm Azimut Grande has been entrusted to the famous architect Achille Salvagni – considered by AD Collector among the 100 best designers in the world – who, through fluid architecture and smooth, soft and cozy shapes, reinterprets some classic styles as the key to a wonderfully contemporary and distinctive model.

STEFANIA FILIGHEDDU speaks

“Sardinia to be loved and lived in all its splendor” The tourism councilor of the city of Arzachena explains to Tendenze Nautiche the guidelines of her mandate: “The Costa Smeralda remains unique in the world, but only if it is networking with the rest of the island will it be possible to stretch the tourist season”

T

by Gianluigi Basilietti

he Costa Smeralda is the Ferrari of Italian tourism, but to send it fast, it needs a champion, able to be fast and see what’s coming around the corner. Now in the driving seat we have Stefania Filigheddu, the new councilor for tourism in the municipality of Arzachena. To her the burden (and also the honor) is to uphold the name of one of the most exclusive resorts in the world and at the same time design the future of tourism in this part of Sardinia, which will inevitably intersect with the tourism of the rest of the island, as well as that of Italy by large.Filigheddu has clear ideas and is understood by his tone to hold the desire to leave an important mark in this mandate as a public administrator, along with the new mayor Roberto Ragnedda and the rest of the municipal council. “The goal that we all have to work together towards is that of presenting the visitor with our territory in its entirety, and that means that we must combine the cultural, gastronomic, archaeological and congressional seaside with the seaside resort so as to lengthen the tourist season until it covers at least 10 months, possible thanks to a particularly favorable climate that Sardinia boasts even in the colder seasons”. The road drawn by the assessor is this and from here he begins. “We need a cultural leap from the various protagonists involved in the territory and therefore both on our part, by us directors and by tourism entrepreneurs - explains Filigheddu – we need to embark on a dialogue that will highlight all the themes of the sector”. The new assessor hopes that it is possible to “connect with

all the product clubs” and finally “be able to communicate and promote the territory and its peculiarities in the right way and with modern techniques”. Starting of course from the sea and the Costa Smeralda "that identifies us and often overshadows Sardinia as a whole, and this is an

error. We must ensure that the Costa Smeralda falls within an overall framework island where tourists have to travel and enjoy of all the wonders that this land can offer to them. “The concept is simple, yet somewhat complicated when it comes to being implemented, "but we must succeed - insists the commissioner - we have a duty to try to sell Sardinia and not a piece of land, this will allow us to create unique itineraries and charming trails, and we will be able to make the most of our island”. All without damaging what has always been the Costa Smeralda in the world’s imagination of tourism. "It was a wonderful insight of Prince Aga Khan and as such should be preserved. The Costa Smeralda - explains Filigheddu is something special, it is a peculiarity that makes us unique in the world and we are proud of it, but it's all the rest that, if allied with our sea, can reserve immense satisfaction in terms of tourist attractions.”And the figure from where it begins are not bad, seeing as in 2016 the Arzachena-Costa Smeralda territory recorded around a million and 143,000 presences. And for the current season we expect even more satisfying numbers, a trend that should not be interrupted, indeed showing it to be the time to push our foot on the accelerator what needs to be done and improvement”, explains Filigheddu. That, by intellectual honesty, recalls that the boom of tourists of recent seasons is also due to the difficult international climate heavily influenced by the threat of terrorism, which has severely pe-

nalized northern Africa, robbing them of many foreign tourists that have found their place on the Italian beaches, in particular Sardinia .You say foreigners and the debate on air and sea links reopens. “There has been a lot of improvement, just think that over 50 airlines fly over here in the summer”, he notes. “It is also true that the connections need to be enhanced, both to the peninsula and internationally, but also to connect better south and north of Sardinia, which in some respects are still too far away, and not just geographically”. In short, Filigheddu does not specifically say, but between Cagliari and the north of the island there is still something to be done in order to arrive to the same idea with the goals that are to be achieved. Meanwhile, the administrator openly shows his inclinations when he points out that "a gap to fill is that of the English language, still uncommon among Sardinian tourism operators and entrepreneurs”. Another void to be fil-

led by the commissioner is on the front of nautical events: “Having removed those related to sailing we no longer have a significant event related to the world of sailing, and this is an issue on which we must work hard, maybe even with the significant participation of the Region”.

gainst Africa, higher up, much higher, Europe. Blue flags with the circle of stars are not found in Lampedusa, except the one waving institutionally on the flag of the Town Hall. Because here, in the middle of the Mediterranean, between the sun, the sea and a spit of rocky island, one does not feel the presence or the absence of Brussels. You only know that you are on the border, that you have come to an authentic paradise where the beauty of nature contrasts the pain of thousands of migrants who have

found a landing point or death a few miles from the shore. It is certain that a trip to this island is not the usual sea vacation, it's something special. Starting with its people, the famous spiaggia dei Conigli, and the most commercial Guitgia. The unpaved and dusty roads, the sea of a blue never seen before, the wind that finds no obstacles, the port, the fishermen mending their nets and selling fish, colorful houses, local nightlife along the main street where 6,000 people live all year long all this and much more is Lampedusa. And it's amazing that so many things can be found on the surface of just 20 square kilometers, where there is only one inhabited center and then just rock and earth tending to the desert, broken only by some shrubs that invoke the rain.Life in Lampedusa is marked by the rhythm of the sea and the sun. When you are here you can go without the clock, as nature dictates the times of your day. And the risk of losing control of the passing days is high, there are not even newspapers to remind you if it's Tuesday or Saturday. At sunset, however, the island pours into the center of the town, looking for the right place for an aperitif or a fish dinner where every dish will bring the flavors of the sea for your tasting. Ice cream shops and bakeries gift your palate with sensations never before experienced. Flavors and scents of a unique land, with the colors of Africa and the indifference of the Old Continent.

MSC Seaview: the largest cruise ship ever built in Italy

M

SC Seaview is the second of two twin ships of the Seaside generation. 323 meters long, with 21 bridges, 2,066 cabins and with a tonnage of 154,000, the ship can accommodate 5,429 people and has a unique feature: the 360 degree seafront promenade, with glass balustrades running around the entire ship, which allows the passenger to enjoy unique glimpses of the most beautiful sea in the world. MSC Seaview was presented on 24 August in Monfalcone (Gorizia) and will spend its opening season from June 2018 in the Western Mediterranean by sailing from three important ports: Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona, touching other destinations, including Naples, Messina and Valletta, where guests can choose from many activities and excursions. The ship will then reach Brazil from November 2018. The sea giant was built by Fincantieri for MSC Cruises and with an investment of over 750 million euros it is the largest cruise ship ever built in Italy.

he sea is the protagonist in the sixth edition of “Trieste Next”, the scientific research festival held every year in Trieste, which will deal with marine biology, sustainable fisheries, marine engineering, power, and environmental issues such as rising sea levels. “A Sea of Science”, from September 21 to 23, will take place in several loca-

tions in the city center and will focus on science and sea, with the aim of exploring the relationship between scientific research, technological innovation and sea-related entrepreneurship. The success of Trieste's territory for the pursuit of excellence is also witnessed by the election of the city to the European Capital of Science 2020.

he mystery of the trader and amateur sailor Donald Crowhurts, which in the sixties went to compete at the Golden Globe Race and disappeared mysteriously, has now been made into the film "The Mercy", starring Colin Firth. In 1968 one of the great challenges yet to be accomplished on the planet was the solo circumnavigation by sailboat, uninterrupted. The Sunday Times offered the prize sum of £5,000 for those who succeeded in the shortest possible time. They set off in nine, including Donald Crowhurts, who during the trip, because of the huge difficulties faced, was to go mad and probably committed suicide: the writings were in fact found on board with 25,000 delusional words; but no trace of him to be found.
