he point is that fixing the mistakes of the past is never too late: but will we manage to see it through to the end? What it comes down to that of the plastic in our seas, the answer is in all probability: no. However, it is still worth trying as some benefit will come out of it, though the feeling is that the problem of sea pollution is so huge that it would require a miracle rather than a Charter. The problem is of a cultural nature, which is rooted in our lifestyles, increasingly plastic-based, both in the use of materials and in the effect of such contents. The action of princesses and organizations are welcome, but the key is to start from scratch with our children. Teach them a more correct and respectful way of life in the world we live in. It is said that young people today are worse than yesterday's. According to certain results, I do not regard this as true. And even if today's children have lost some traits and some values, it is simply because they have bad teachers. And the teachers are us, the adults. Those who have thrown the plastic into oceans and deforested forests. Just to be clear.

ceans to be saved. This is the mission that has been set by the One Ocean Forum. It took place in Milan in the first days of October as an initiative of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and specially requested by Princess Zahra Aga Khan. The Charta Smeralda is particularly sensitive to environmental issues. The two days in Milan have served as a way both to become aware of the gravity of the issue surrounding the world's seas, and to draw up a Magna Carta in which to establish codes and commitments aimed at safeguarding the marine ecosystem. Now, here is where the Charta Smeralda comes in (signed by the Princess and the Commodore of YCCS, Riccardo Bonadeo), aimed at lovers of the sea and those who spend time on the water for pleasure and for professional activities. But it also addresses organizations that promote and support maritime activities. Below we propose the fundamental principles and commitments contained in the Charta, starting with those addressed to individuals, and then passing in the second part to those dedicated to organizations. Principles and commitments for individuals: PREVENT COASTAL AND MARITIME POLLUTION We are committed to the adoption of environmentally friendly products for cleaning and maintenance of boats (e.g. paint, detergents); ensure the adoption of spill-over procedures; avoid the discharge of black water (e.g. toilet discharge) and gray water (e.g. water coming from sinks, showers on board and the cleaning of the boat); to prevent any waste to end up in the waterways. In case of fuel or oil leakage, we are committed to being prepared to handle any risk of damage and to minimize the consequences for the environment. PRESERVE WATER RESOURCES We are committed to preserving water, controlling its use and looking for opportunities to

minimize its consumption, especially when cleaning the boat (whenever it is possible to use rain water tanks or to save water). REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND THE CARBON FOOTPRINT, AND ADOPT RENEWABLE ENERGY We are committed to reducing our energy consumption through responsible behavior and adopting good maintenance practices that increase the efficiency of our boats. We are committed to being informed about our carbon emissions and to adopt solutions to reduce them, using renewable sources as preferred energy alternatives for our boats, and switching to biofuels instead of traditional ones, if available and technically feasible. MINIMIZE THE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES, PROMOTE REUSE AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF RECYCLING We are committed to adopting conduct that minimizes the use of natural resources, prevents waste generation by adopting sustainable consumption, promotes the reuse of goods and packaging where feasible, and to promote recycling practices (paper, glass, aluminum, plastic, wood, etc.) when separate collection is available. ELIMINATE DISPOSABLE PLASTIC We are committed to reducing and eliminating waste plastics (e.g. plastic bottles, shopping bags, plastic film, disposable table cloths, straps, plastic cups) and to replace it with alternative and more sustainable solutions (e.g. reusable bottles).
7
PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE NATURAL AND MARITIME HABITAT We are committed to protecting and preserving the natural habitat and marine flora and fauna. Avoid damaging the ecosystem by using proper anchoring techniques. We conduct ourselves respectfully in sailing boats and motorboats to ensure that there is no disturbance to marine animals and marine biodiversity (e.g. fish farms, birds, mammals). We observe and respect responsible and sustainable fishing practices. We are committed to not buying items made with endangered species (e.g. coral, shells). We are aware of the risks of bio-incrustation and we are committed to incorporating management practices to limit or avoid the incrustation of harmful marine organisms that may have an impact on the marine environment and human health. ADOPT A SUSTAINABLE, ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT We are committed to respecting the laws, denouncing regulatory violations or environmental accidents to the authorities, avoiding unethical behavior and acting responsibly on shore, aboard a sailboat or motorboat. HOLD AN ACTIVE ROLE IN PROTECTING THE SEA AND RECLAMATION We are committed to playing an active role in researching and promoting the development of innovative solutions to reduce our environmental impact on oceans, seas and coastal areas, and to increase the sustainability within our conduct. We are committed to promoting these

COLLABORATE AND SHARE WITH OTHERS We are committed to collaborating with other individuals and organizations (e.g. local authorities, business communities, NGOs and society in general) and participating in other initiatives and programs designed to protect the ocean and marine habitat to maximize our positive impact. SUPPORT THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY We are committed to supporting the advancement of scientific knowledge of the oceans, seas and coastal areas by providing access and sharing data and information collected while sailing and motoring in all parts of the world. We agree to support the Paris Climate Agreement, so that the nations of the world keep their commitments to reducing emissions and accelerating the transition to a cleaner economy with a lower carbon footprint. EDUCATE AND INVOLVE THE NEW GENERATION We are committed to transmitting the values and principles to the new generation with regards to the protection of the oceans, seas and coastal areas. We are committed to actively participating in education programs and campaigns (e.g. beach cleaning initiatives or programs against the use of disposable plastic) that engage younger generations and inspire them positively to behave responsibly. PROMOTING AWARENESS, COMMUNICATION AND SPREAD THE CHARTA SMERALDA We are aware that by signing the Charta Smeralda we become ambassadors for the protection of the oceans, seas and coastal areas and we are committed to raising awareness of the need to preserve the habitat, fauna and flora of the sea. We are also committed to spreading the Charta Smeralda, its principles and inspirational values among our family and friends, sailors and organizations. Principles and commitments for organizations: MANAGE ORGANIZATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND POLICIES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT We are committed to managing our organization in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, and to comply with international, national and local environmental laws, guide lines, and codes of conduct. ADOPT A POLICY AND IMPLEMENT A PLAN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT We are committed to adopting a policy and implemen-
ting an environmental plan in relation to our organization's strategic and operational activities, designed to minimize our environmental impact (e.g. preventing pollution, minimizing the consumption of natural resources, managing risks). This includes all river operations and processes (facility management, event management, goods and service purchase, etc.) and all maritime activities (regattas, cleaning and maintenance of boats, etc.). In order to strengthen our commitment, we will evaluate the adoption of specific environmental management tools (e.g. environmental management systems, environmental guidelines, eco-labels) that provide support and facilitate the adoption of our policy and implementation of our plan for the environment. RESPONSIBILITY AND TRANSPARENCY We are committed to being a responsible and transparent organization in all of our activities and initiatives. We also commit ourselves to evaluate, measure and monitor the environmental impact of our activities and make this information accessible to our shareholders. Throughout the Conference ‘Our Ocean’ in Malta, of the European Commission, 6 billion euros were raised to fund 36 projects

ceans to be saved. Mobilization is now worldwide and it shows the various commitments coming from all latitudes. The latest comes from the international conference Our Ocean, which is in Malta and organized by the European Commission. At the end of the two days, there was a clear commitment from the participants, who came from several states, which translated into 6 billion euros, which are put forward for the protection of the marine ecosystem. A result
that has gone far beyond the brightest expectations, so much so that initially it was estimated to raise a billion and a little more in favor of the 36 projects to be implemented for the protection of the oceans. The European Commission, for its part, had allocated 550 million, and this could have been a propeller for governments, countries, the financial world, foundations and international organizations, stimulated and called into question to play their role as absolute protagonists in the fight against pollution. And so the contribution offered was "spectacular", as
the European Environment Commissioner, Karmen Vella, pointed out. The monster we are fighting is that of plastic and microplastic, strangulating the oceans. Monsters to be fought with the reduction of use and recycling; which above all in this case calls big industries into action.Malta has also announced the creation of new marine protected areas covering more than 2.5 million square kilometers. Projects are also geared to tackling climate change and piracy, combatting illegal fishing and developing a sustainable blue economy.

DELOITTE STUDY ELABORATED FOR NAUTICA ITALIANA
The nautical market
An increase of 8% in 2016, for the current year it is expe Italy won 49% of world orders for superyacht engines
A
ccording to Deloitte data, for 2016, the world's shipping market for new yachts is worth around 21 billion euros, up 8% compared to 2015 (19 billion euros). The 2017 estimate for the world's shipping market for new pleasure boats (deliveries) is worth 22.9 billion euros, up + 11% over 2016.Considering the different types of boats, in 2016 the inbound and sterndrive market is still the most important and worth 12.3 billion, up by + 12%; The outboard and inflatable market is worth 6.2 billion (+ 6% compared to 2015), while the sailboat market holds 2.2 billion.
North America is the most important market for inboard and sterndrive (38%), and outboard and inflatable (67%), while Europe as a market represents 23% of inboard and outboard value and 46% sailing boat market. In 2017, the portfolio of superyacht orders (over 30 meters in length) is worth 314 units - excluding on hold and "ghost" orders of which 46% are new orders. Motor yachts represent over 92% of the total: 291 orders, up +10.2% over 2016.In 2017, compared to the rest of the world, Italy won 49% of the total of motor-superyacht orders, which fell to 34% when considering gross tonnage. The sailing yacht market in 2017 has a portfolio of orders of 23 units, of which nine are

ected to grow further to 11%
Lamberto Tacoli The President of Nautica Italiana comments on the research data
represented by new orders. “It is very important for Nautica Italiana to present this study, filed by Deloitte, where the Italian superyacht industry is the protagonist," commented President Lamberto Tacoli. “Our leadership is confirmed and I want to emphasize the growth rate of new orders compared to the increase in the overall portfolio (+ 11.5% vs. + 7%); a figure that once again reveals the vitality of the nautical industry. For the first time the study reports the global value of Italian shipbuilding production and further implementations will be introduced in the coming years thanks to our Market Monitor project, developed with Deloitte”.
“
This data is still here again to prove the vitality of the Italian nautical industry

In 2016 Italy achieved a value of shipbuilding worth 2 billion euros, of which 90.4% were inboard and sterndrive, 6.5% sailboats and 3.1% by outboard and pneumatic vessels. For 2017, the estimate of the growth forecast for domestic production is about + 13% (2.3 billion)."Market Monitor Insight 2017 confirms the growth of the nautical market also for 2016, driven by the Italian nautical industry, which shows a significant increase with a production value of 2 billion euros”, said Luca Petroni, chairman of Deloitte Financial Advisory Italy.
Italy still confirms its leadership in the new construction sector: it is the leading manufacturer at European level, second in the world after the US. “The pleasure boat market - noted Tommaso Nastasi, Deloitte FA Advisory Business Advisor - after the collapse of recent years, is undergoing an important recovery phase with an expected forecast of + 11% for 2017. The challenge for Italian operators is to expand and diversify the geographic range of final customers”. “The success of the Italian nautical industry is strengthened by its 88% export of shipbuilding," commented Lorenzo Pollicardo, Secretary General of Nautica Italiana. “In addition, the analysis of Italian shipbuilding production has shown that the superyachts, 20 to 50 meters long, the maxi ribs, and the sailing boats of excellence are the highest performing sectors”. Armando Branchini, Vice President of the Altagamma Foundation, to which Nautica Italiana is affiliated, said: “The opportunity - but also the categorical imperative - is to win the most sophisticated and wealthy customers, which continues to grow by 7.2% per annum in the whole world. How is the high-end industry as a whole doing”?

New nautical code, Ucina: we need to implify Minister Delrio’s opening remark
S
enate hearing at Ucina Confindustria nautica regarding the revision of the boating Code. “In the last year and a half, Ucina Confindustria nautica played a coordinating role between the associations and the administrations for drafting the reform, resulting from the work of the 12 technical tables concluded in November 2016; tables to which Ucina has participated, representing the entire pleasure boat sector as the only accredited category association”, reads a note from the same Ucina. “Following the shared text, dismissed at the beginning of January, it has undergone radical changes that have seen it transform since its original version”, said Maurizio Balducci, in his opening speech at the committee. “What we have to remember is that our market has already paid hard for the wrong political
choices during these years of crisis”, he added. “It is first of all - it was pointed out by the delegation - to recover the references of telematics Archives of recreational units” already state law from 2012 but still not operational due to lack of implementing decrees. “Moreover, the important simplifications already validated at the technical level, in particular those for registration of recreational units, for commercial use, for ships registered in the international register, on financial leasing, for the fulfillment of Italian nationals resident in the EU, for foreign flag units, for the use of the license plate, on the professional title, on the proper definition of the professional figure of the leisure broker, on the dry boat maintenance, on assistance and towing for boats and vessels at sea, to adapt to the Directive 2013/53/EU necessary to ensure effective protection of the placing of products on the mar-
ket”, they highlighted. Continuing: “All the simplifications already released by the technical working table on the regulation of safety guidelines for recreational craft and pleasure craft, including commercial ones, have to be discussed and approved”. Finally, it has been said that it is necessary to eliminate "the bureaucratic burdens introduced for nautical schools and training centers, tourist marinas, mooring in protected areas". Ucina has therefore strongly urged the Parliament to clarify a successful development policy and to take over the work which has originated from the technical meetings. Minister Graziano Delrio has come up with a large opening to the integration of the Code of the nautical reform. This was announced by Ucina, expressing great satisfaction for the word given by those in charge at the department of Infrastructure and Transport.

A Journey to Kelibia “pearl of Tunisia

Immense white sandy beaches, turquoise sea and a lively town that looks over Pantelleria

Between sea and city Immense sandy beaches characterize the coast of Kelibia, a countryman two hours away from Tunis, in the north of the country
T
unis Airport is two hours away by bus. The road to arrive is not the best, but when you arrive at Kelibia you are certain: the trip was worth it. We are on the coast, near Cape Bon, if you look at the horizon, you can see Pantelleria. The turquoise sea is gorgeous, and striking are the vast expanses of sand, so fine it looks like talcum powder. One could say a piece of the Maldives in North Africa. Kelibia is not one of Tunisia's most famous and well-known destinations and is by no means
as famous as Djerba, but perhaps it is more beautiful. It is most certainly unique. The city has less than 60,000 inhabitants and is a typical Arabian town, with a mosque and a market where the spice is the master, but there is no lack of vegetables and fruit. And then the olives, which are found everywhere; thanks also to the Italians, who have had a great influence on this land, both in the cultivation of olives and in craftsmanship, especially in woodworking. And there are so many Italians who have decided today to live here, in this place kissed

by a wonderful climate and a unique sea. To all of the above add a favorable taxation compared to that of Italy, of which never hurts. In short, Kelibia is one of those destinations that still escapes mass tourism, but not to those looking for an uncontaminated and wild sea, where it is easy to meet camels and dromedaries walking in the middle of the beach. Life in the city is not so frantic; despite the lively commercial port where ships and travelers travel abundantly every day.Kelibia is a classic summer destination, but spending a week in October is definitely something wonderful to consider, you would find a land perhaps even more fascinating than if you visited it under the July sun. Do not miss a visit to the Byzantine fortress of the 6th century, from there the view is spectacular, with Italy visible in the background, but meanwhile you are in a beautiful land.

A wind farm in the Atlantic: energy for the whole planet
A
n immense expanse of wind turbines, as big as India, placed in the North Atlantic Ocean, could produce enough energy for humanity every year. Reality or science fiction? Researchers at the University of Stanford, California, Have published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that shows that, at least in theory, the power of a wind farm installed miles away from the coastline you could feed the whole world with this renewable source. Now, moving from theory to practice is not easy: in fact, the expanse of wind turbines would stretch in the ocean for 3 million square kilometers, the size of Argentina (which, however, would cover only 4% of the entire area occupied by the Atlantic Ocean). Along with real possibilities of project implementation, one thing is certain: on our planet there is a huge amount of clean energy available and therefore we need to invest increasingly more in technologies capable of exploiting it.

M
ore than six years on from the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, horror seems to have no end. The radioactive cesium produced by the nuclear power plant accident in 2011 has been found in the sand of eight beaches, about a hundred kilometers away from the power plant. This is what has been revealed by a recent US study con-
ducted by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution researchers, in collaboration with Kanazawa University in Japan and appeared on Pnas. They found that radioactive materials slowly accumulated in sand and groundwater to nearly a hundred kilometers away from the Japanese coast, probably transported along the shores from ocean currents.
n November, Dario Noseda, the sailor of Mandaro del Lario, in the province of Lecco, will cross the Atlantic Ocean. Star, a former Olympic class yacht, seven meters long and one and a half meters wide, will sail from Tenerife, Gran Canaria, to the Bahamas: nearly three thousand miles in total for a total of 20-30 days of sailing. "Now they cross the Atlantic Ocean even with a bathtub, I do not understand why it cannot be done with a yacht of class such as Star," said the sailor. The first time on deck was when he was six, Noseda lived in the Caribbean, where he worked as a sailing instructor in the villages and drove large catamarans. In Europe, however, he raced with all the monotypes, specializing with the Star.
