Sarah Graham: For the love of Cooking! By Danni Thunell Ende
Sarah Graham is a celebrated South-African based cook, food writer and TV show host. She started her food blog, A Foodie Lives Here, in May 2010 and later that year was the first South African food blogger to be awarded a cookbook contract by Penguin Random House. Fast forward and she’s now published four books and is embarking on the third season of her TV series “Sarah Graham’s Food Safari.” She’s recently teamed up with UCook to bring some of her favourite speedy, healthy suppers right to your very own door. She’s evidently passionate about what she does and is a self-confessed workaholic, who still manages to balance work with family life. Her Hubby, Rob, and two daughters are what’s most important to her. Where did your love of cooking come from? Eating! I have always loved food, and grew up on a farm where we ate simply, seasonally and fairly sustainable all by default. Now that I look back, that was an amazing privilege and these are principles that shaped how I cook and eat, and that I try and bring into my recipes. I have been lucky enough to travel a lot as well, and this has hugely influenced the way I cook. Describe your food philosophy. Keep it simple and honest, and make food for feeding people you love. What’s been the proudest moment of your career? Winning a SAFTA for the first season in 2014 (Sarah Graham cooks Cape Town) and Food Safari airing in over 40 countries around the world. Having the privilege of meeting food influencers and chefs like George Calombaris, Gary Mehigan, Matt Moran, Marco Pierre White and Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. It was also amazing to be on the cover of Woman&Home last month.

What quote do you live by? Hard work goes a long way. Are entrepreneurs born or made? Born. What qualities of yours do you attribute to your success? What chef do you admire the most and why? Even though it may sound cliché, I love Jamie Oliver because he cares so much about where our food comes from and food education. Tell us something about yourself that may surprise our readers. I speak reasonable French. What’s your favourite guilty sweet treat? Homemade salted caramel. To what do you attribute your success? I’ve never set goals but always put one foot in front of the other and am lucky to be doing something that I love. How do you balance family life with your busy career? I use every kitchen trick and tip like prepping lunches for the week and “cooking once, eating twice”. And I have an amazing support system at home.

What are the high and lows of being your own boss? Being your own boss means leading a stressful life filled with commitments and expectations but seeing a happy client or a motivated employee makes it worthwhile. Name the biggest issue facing working women. The perception that women should create a perfect balance between life and work, the gender wage gap and the expectation to look a certain way. Are entrepreneurs born or made? It takes a bit of both, you can be born into an entrepreneurial family but could be less attracted to the commitment and risk. You need to have that fire in your belly and be a risk taker, two qualities which defy a human being’s basic instinct to be safe. What qualities of yours do you attribute to your success? Patience, resilience and an unwavering self-belief. Kindness and integrity are my personal strengths, great family and friends and the amazing team I work with.

UNDERSTANDING ANGER By Janet Winterbourne
Many of us in our lives have encountered friends, loved ones even strangers who live with and exhibit varying degrees of anger that they act out on unsuspecting others or conversely on those who they know they can do it to and get away with. Some anger may be deeply rooted in the past, and requires specific intense therapy to help heal the person, for example in cases of childhood abuse, which then carries trauma into adulthood, or in the case where a person has experienced/participated and subsequently suppressed traumatising events in their lives which haunts them, and which may lead to feelings of guilt, they express this hurt in the form of anger, this is particularly common for instance in military personnel who have experienced front line action. Day to day and in a more generalised application, when a person is always angry, or has an angry disagreeable nature, it is often a tell-tale sign that they secretly feel that they are not good enough. They will use anger, exasperation, judgemental thoughts and eye-rolling to disguise this inner wound. They may present as people who are difficult to deal with, defensive in their nature and some are seen to be ‘awkward’ when they need to function in groups that
10
are outside of their trusted circle, if they have one. Innately they may feel unskilled in social circles and may be reclusive or unsocial to some degree. If unchecked, anger can lead to an unhealthy abuse of self and others – often when we look beneath the surface, anger can reveal that the person uses anger to disguise a personal fear, this can lead to substance abuse or they may become controlling of others to try to maintain a state of being that they are comfortable with - a fear of loss (of friends, partner, family, work) or a fear of feeling inferior and not good enough, they doubt and question themselves internally, and may find new situations or people threatening. The key to healing for the angry person, is not to suppress it or forcibly avoid it by drug or alcohol abuse, or by trying to ‘control’ others by having them fearful of an angry episode or by forcing a significant other to become compliant. It needs to be addressed and the fear that lies beneath.
Fear, F.E.A.R. (False evidence appearing real) can in many cases be dissipated by confronting it. When we break down what we are fearful of, and understand why we feel that way, we are then empowered to resolve the fear through this understanding and realise that it isn’t real, that we have allowed ourselves to become conditioned and held captive by our incorrect belief that we have something to be afraid of, it can then no longer hold us hostage, we can come to realise that we don’t have to be angry, as fear dissolves so can it’s sinister friend anger. If your partner, family member, friend or colleague exhibits as an angry person, it is up to you not facilitate this, it will not help you or the person if you allow yourself to be governed by their anger, you may even be enabling the person. Compliance will not make their anger go away, the ONLY route for resolving this is for them to take responsibility for it and dig deep to understand, resolve and allow themselves to let it go.

“A WOMAN’S WORK IS NEVER DONE...” By Richard Thompson
These were lyrics penned in the early 90’s by the American folk singer and ardent social activist, Tracy Chapman, and, in the spirit of Woman’s day on 9 August, have never been more prevalent than today. From a legal perspective, women have, over the course of history in this country, had their “work” cut out for them when it comes to protecting their rights. That being said, various recent and progressive legislation in South Africa has gone a long way towards better protecting the rights of women. The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1996 was passed to recognise women’s reproductive health rights and prevent the sometimes fatal consequences of illegal backstreet abortions. The Maintenance Act of 1998 was a response to problems with the old maintenance laws, making some major changes like maintenance being allowed to be deducted directly from ATTORNEYS . CONVEYANCERS . NOTARIES
a person’s salary as well as, if maintenance is not paid, a magistrate having the authority to seize property belonging to the person obligated to pay. Arguably the most far reaching improvement to the personal safety rights of women was the Domestic Violence Act, passed in 1998 to extend the protection provided by its predecessor, the Prevention of Family Violence Act. It broadened the definition of domestic violence to include not only married women and children, but unmarried women who are involved in relationships, people in same-sex relationships and other people who share a living space. When one also throws the Constitution and its protection of the rights to equality into the mix, the rights of women have never been more at the forefront in this country, but there is still a long way to go and we, at Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys, are committed to continuing this “work” in whatever form it may present itself.

DON’T FOAM-ROLL-MASSAGE YOUR ILIOTIBIAL BAND (IT BAND) By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“When you have adjusted the physical to its normal demands. Nature supplies the remainder.”- Dr Andrew Taylor Still. Founder of Osteopathy
Foam rolling has become increasingly popular as a method of self-massage in an effort to work out muscle knots and tension. However, rolling out your iliotibial band, up and down, is likely to make you grimace in pain. Anatomically, the IT band (ITB) is a longitudinal fibrous band of deep fascia that originates from the gluteus maximus (buttock)and tensor fascia lata (front side of pelvis) then continues as a tendinous, fascial band that runs from the pelvis down along the outside of the thigh to below the knee, attaching on the outside of the lower leg bone (the tibia). The lateral quadriceps, lateral hamstrings, the gluteus maximus, and the tensor fascia lata (TFL) all have a fascial connection to the IT Band.
The iliotibial band contributes to stabilizing the knee and hip during weight-bearing and is constantly in use during standing, walking and running. It may also contribute to energy savings during locomotion by helping swing your leg back and releasing it as the leg swings forward during walking and running.
Also keep in mind foam rolling doesn’t break up knots or muscle adhesions. Breaking up a muscle adhesion would require a greater level of expertise and appropriate force than what a roller can produce and directing inappropriate force may not be healthy for the tissue anyway.
Faulty overuse movement (repetitive flexion and extension of the knee from running, cycling or other repetitive activities) can become problematic when too much stress is placed on the ITB causing increased friction over the outside of the knee, therefore causing inflammation and pain in the knee or thigh. This is called IT Band Syndrome.
The IT band pain is actually a symptom of a larger problem. An osteopath will advise you to look at your biomechanics instead.
Muscle imbalance due to poor exercise technique, poor exercise choice, muscle weakness, faulty movement patterns, poor biomechanics in the foot, hip or knee, fatigue and increased tension in the surrounding muscles will contribute to creating pain. The TFL and gluteus maximus have an important biomechanical role with IT band. This is because they control the amount of tension on the IT band . The IT band cannot be stretched because it doesn’t contract. There are no actions of the ITB since the ITB is not a muscle. It’s a totally different structure. Research shows that foam rolling your ITB is a waste of time (1).
Because of the complicated nature of a running gait and movement there is not one easy fix. Without getting a full osteopathic examination of your gait and your biomechanics, it is difficult to determine what exercises need to be done to correct the problem. Doing incorrect exercises can cause things to get worse or another problem to arise. If you are unsure how to do this then seek the help of a trained professional such as an osteopath to evaluate your mechanics, get osteopathic treatment (myofascial release, joint mobilisation, articulation etc), postural advice and put a corrective program in place. 1. Age specific skin concerns
How do you remedy the visible signs of ageing? Treatment is dependent on the visible signs you are seeing. For pigmentation, it is best to start treatments with superficial peels and rejuvenating lasers such as Laser Genesis and Fraxel Dual. For dynamic wrinkles, you can inject botulinum toxin (Botox® and/or Dysport®). For deep lines and static wrinkles, you can inject fillers and volumisers, and start treatment with PDO threads and Silhouette suspension sutures. You should also use a skincare range that is designed specifically for your skin concerns. What should your skincare routine consist of during each decade? • In your 20’s it’s all about protection and prevention, so use lots of sunscreen and products packed with anti-oxidants, such as Vitamin C and E to protect your skin from the elements. • During your 30’s it’s still about protection, but also repair, so use products with anti-oxidants, retinol and resurfacers such as AHA’s. • In your 40’s you need to start doing more repair and keep your skin barrier intact with more moisturisation. Therefore retinoids, growth factors, peptides and ceramides are important at this stage. • Your 50’s are about moisturisation and using products with anti-oxidants, retinol, peptide, growth factors and resurfacers. What is the relationship between SPF and anti-ageing? The sun causes environmental ageing and damage, so if you protect the skin from the sun with an excellent SPF every day, it helps to slow down the ageing process.
Despite this, they get all the same issues that women do, and it is equally important for men to take care of their skin in the same way. Quick tips: • The earlier you start taking care of your skin the better! • Take preventative measures, especially if you know that the trend in your family is to get certain skin issues, start treating and preventing those as early as possible. • Don’t go anywhere without a great facial SPF. • Don’t just focus on your face in your skin care routine, include your ears, neck, chest and hands. • Never forget that your face is the garment that you have to wear every single day of your life. Look after your skin as it is the one thing you cannot hide! To schedule a consult with one of the doctors at Skin Renewal or to find out more about these treatments, visit www.skinrenewal.co.za
Do men age in the same way women do? The answer is yes, however, their skin is thicker, and the facial muscles are stronger delaying the onset of ageing.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT… LET’S GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS! Root Canal Treatment is the field of Dentistry that deals with the ‘Inside’ of the tooth, the dental pulp and the surrounding tissues. It is often the last way a tooth can be saved and, when done with the necessary training, expertise, advanced equipment and techniques and, most importantly, patience, it is one of the most predictable treatment options available.
Teeth that need Root Canal treatment often, but not always, have symptoms. This can include throbbing or sharp pain, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, discoloration, swelling of gums, pain on biting or chewing, or a history of trauma. Sometimes there are no signs or symptoms and a diagnosis of infection is made by chance. Leaving an infected tooth untreated, often lead to other systemic diseases and is very important to address. Healthy teeth have nerves and blood vessels contained within the root canal system inside the roots of the tooth. These give us, for example, the cold sensation when we eat an ice-cream or drink cold water. Various things can cause damage to these tissues such as a deep cavity, a large filling, trauma, cracks, gum disease or malformed teeth. This may result in an inflammation or infection where the contents of the root canal system can be destroyed. The aim of Endodontic treatment is to save these teeth and remove pain by treating existing infections and prevent recurring infections.
By Dr Andre Brand
Why see a Specialist? Endodontists are specialists in saving teeth, having had additional training to become experts in performing root canal treatment and diagnosing and treating pain. In South Africa, unlike in most other countries, Endodontics is not a registerable speciality. However, some dentists, having undergone additional training, limit their practices to Endodontics and fulfil this role. The average endodontist completes 25 root canal treatments a week, while general dentists do much less. Because they limit their practice solely to endodontic treatment, endodontists are efficient and precise. This equates to a positive experience and faster healing. We also go out of our way to accommodate patients with emergencies to relieve pain quickly and efficiently and we use state-ofthe-art technology such as microscopes, digital imaging and laser disinfection to treat patients effectively and comfortably.
Dr Andre Brand is a registered Dental Practitioner with a Special Interest in Endodontics. Dr Brand practices from 13 Hudson Street, De Waterkant, CPT and can be contacted on 0214182048, or info@drandrebrandmicroendodontics.com
Do you want perfect eyebrows? Then Microblading is the answer. Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill in over plucked eyebrows or even just a slight arch. The results are natural and undetectable. It has taken the world of eyebrow techniques from ordinary to extraordinary. Microblading is a techique of making brow hairstrokes by gently drawing a set of slightly curved needles
through the epidermal and superficial dermal layer of the skin. The result? A fine line or scoring of the skin into which colour is delivered by multiple needles being moved as they rotate through the skin in a slight curve. Lasting 1-2 years it is the perfect solution to those wow eyebrows.

WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY - UPVC IS A WINNER In summer we welcome a breeze through our homes, even encourage it by opening windows and doors. In winter, that breeze turns into an unwelcome draught! With winter fast approaching, make sure your home is draught free by installing #REHAU’s uPVC windows and doors, guaranteed to make your home feel more comfortable while reducing your electricity bill! #UPVCWindowBenefits #EnergyEfficientWindows The thermal efficiency of windows is measured using a ‘U’ value. The lower the ‘U’ value, the less heat is permitted to pass through the window and the more efficient the window is. When it comes to ‘U’ values - lowest is best! An average home will lose 30% of its heating or cooling energy through its windows and doors. A glance at the table to the right shows our top performing New Look Collection window
would reduce those loses by 75% compared to a standard aluminum window! That’s a 22.5% reduction in your heating and cooling costs. With carbon emissions high on the global agenda and the ever increasing cost of electricity, we are all looking for ways to make our homes more energy efficient. Windows from the New Look Collection would be a big step in the right direction.
GREEN TIP REHAU’s uPVC window and door systems conform the energy performance standards of SANS 204 and 10400XA
