March 2019 15 000 Copies

Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want

ED’S LETTER This first quarter’s been action packed. The constant theme is around not having enough time. Not enough time to gym, to go for a walk or catch up with friends. Very importantly, not enough time to practise self-care. In a world that’s so results- driven and that rewards busyness and jam-packed schedules, how does one avoid the guilt that comes with simply stopping for a second, tuning into one’s body and perhaps deciding to take a midday nap? Because you’ll fit what you need to fit in around it and because you happen to be exhausted. I think we’re all immensely capable, more so than we give ourselves credit for. If we happen to bunk a Friday to take the family away, or fit a snooze, massage or coffee with a friend into our action-packed days; I say: Well done. I salute you. Here’s to a little March Madness and a lot more ‘selfcare’. Enjoy!

Q&A WITH ANTHONY PALMER CA (SA) FIXED INCOME IN TODAY’S MARKET In these uncertain times, many people are anxious about the markets, especially when it comes to a choice between equities and income funds. Anthony Palmer, Director: Corporate and Client Solutions at Carrick Wealth, shares with us his views on the issue. Anthony, what do you tell investors that are anxious about the markets? Their concerns are well founded, especially considering the poor domestic equity market performance and other idiosyncratic risks we have recently seen such as fraud and poor corporate earnings. Everyone’s circumstances are different but if a client is concerned about capital preservation, willing to forego longer-term upside and looking for a predictable income then their investment portfolio should hold a sizeable allocation to a flexible income fund as a key building block. For companies looking for inflation-beating returns on excess cash reserves, a flexible income fund is also a great solution. What return can I expect? I have my favourite income fund and for the purposes of this article I am going to solely focus on it. My clients are often surprised to see a low-risk, daily-traded and award-winning fund that is yielding more than 10% per annum. I was very excited to see the fund win 2 awards at the end of January - Best South African Interest-Bearing Fund and the Best South African Multi-Asset Income Fund. • Since inception and net of fees, the fund has

6

• •

returned an annualised 10.1% To December 2018, over three years and net of fees, the fund delivered a cumulative 42.1% In 2018 the fund returned 9.98%, net of fees

Is it safe? The Carrick Investment Committee regularly review their approved panel of asset managers and have done an extensive due diligence on the fund. I am extremely comfortable with the fund manager whose team employs a highly rigorous and disciplined investment process. I would categorise this as a low-risk investment and suitable for investments with a 12-month and greater time horizon. What makes this income fund different? The fund is truly actively managed and has the flexibility to seek out and act on market opportunities as well as to identify and take advantage of miss-priced opportunities in the market. The fund is also small relative to some of the dominant income funds. This means that the smaller and very appealing opportunities have more of an effect on the overall returns. So, what is a flexible income fund and who can hold it? A flexible income fund is similar to a bond fund but has a wider mandate allowing additional investments into other asset classes both locally and internationally. The majority of the investments, however, are held in RSA government bonds, cash and South African corporate debt. The fund can be held by individuals, trusts and companies.

JJ ENGELBRECHT:

THE PRIVILEGE OF PUTTING ON THE GREEN & GOLD By Danni Thunell Ende

An amazing rugby career to date, JJ has proven a superstar both locally and abroad. With all the highs and lows of an illustrious rugby career, a Top Billing wedding and entrepreneurial aspirations, this young man is shooting for the stars. How did you get into professional rugby? To be honest it’s always been my dream since a young boy. I was lucky enough to play Craven Week for Eastern Province and that is where Western Province saw me and gave me my first contract. Describe the feeling you got when you were selected for the Springboks? It was a feeling of absolute satisfaction and gratefulness. It’s the ultimate goal when it comes to rugby and many great players never get the privilege of putting on the green and gold. How do you keep fit and injury-free? It’s funny, because I don’t think any rugby player is ever 100% injury free, but we have a very good medical team to keep us on the field and a good conditioning team to keep us fit. How can you make a difference in South Africa? Being in the public eye, I try to live a life that promotes my Christian beliefs and hope to lead more people to God. I also enjoy videography and I’m thinking about starting a platform on social media that will share the stories of certain individuals living on the streets, where people can learn about how that person ended up homeless and what needs they have, and can then donate something to help.

lifestyle. There will be bad times, but also many amazing times! Appreciate the support of your family and loved ones. What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? Vacation to Raja Ampat. Europe ski trip with a group of close friends. Design and build a house from scratch. What have been the highs and lows of your career so far? Highs: First Currie Cup try in my debut and getting the chance to travel and see the world. Lows: Getting a neck injury that had me completely paralysed for a few minutes and not knowing if I would be able to walk again. I recovered fully at least with no problems. How are you enjoying married life? Married life is great so far, but I think it’s mostly because I’m so lucky with the wife I chose. My wife Alise is a superstar in the way she loves and supports me while she has her own high ambitions. Any resolutions for this year? I really want to start building a career outside rugby and I am currently looking at getting involved in the coffee business with (according to me) the best coffee roasters in Cape Town. How do you deal with facing former teammates in a game? On the field it’s a game and we have to try and win at all costs, but I am always excited to see old mates. Tell us something about yourself no-one else may know. I can play a few songs on the piano.

What advice do you have for aspiring, professional rugby players? Work very hard, but keep a balanced

DEAD-HANGING (BRACHIATE) FOR SHOULDER PAIN By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

‘Science is about defining truths about nature through experiment or experience’. – Richard Feynman, nuclear physicist ligaments and other soft tissue have to pass, is called the coracoacromial arch. The rotator cuff tendons lie between the acromion and the humerus. Inappropriate movements, like upright rowing and lateral arm raises, the rotator cuff tendons can get pinched or snagged between the two bones causing irritation and eventual wear-and-tear. With time, gravity, injuries, poor posture, inappropriate exercise or lack of use, shoulder deformation is encouraged causing the acromion to become hooked downward. This will narrow and compress this tunnel and all that soft tissue begins to degenerate, with shoulder pain and complications ensuing. Many people suffer from shoulder pain at some point in their lives. There are many contributing factors that can lead to the cause of shoulder pain such as arthritis, bursitis, rotator cuff injuries and even torn tendons or ligaments. Understanding the anatomy of the shoulder is critical if you want to restore and maintain shoulder health. The rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder attach to various points on the head of the upper arm bone (humerus). Above the humerus is the tip of the shoulder blade (acromion). This tunnel, where many tendons,

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. John M. Kirsch, conducted research through a series of CT scans performed in 2004 to study the mechanics of the hanging exercise in the shoulders of live subjects. The study found that this simple exercise called relaxed hanging, aka ‘brachial hanging’, was helpful in certain shoulder problems. The idea is that when the arm is fully overhead (in flexion), the upper arm bone (humerus) will press against the acromion (tip of the shoulder blade) and eventually reshape it. Hanging also stretches and strengthens the supraspinatus tendon. Supraspinatus tendon is partially responsible for shoulder stability and strength.

Brachiating may help relieve tension through the back and shoulder. The effect of gravity pulls our posture down causing a negative compressive impact on our muscles, fascia, bones and joints, brachiating is hanging from a bar for a few seconds each day and working your way up to being able to do it for an interval of between thirty seconds and a minute. Your goal may be to be able to hold on and hang with your feet in the air. But you can also do it with your feet on the ground for support. It depends on your current strength and endurance level. If you have shoulder issues, pain and dysfunction consult with your local osteopathl who will be able to thoroughly assess the health of your shoulders, neck, spine and posture. After taking a case history and performing an examination, a diagnosis may be reached and referral for imaging made if necessary. Please do not hesitate to contact an osteopath for hands-on osteopathic treatment to help improve the muscles and fascia of the shoulder girdle combined with appropriate postural and exercise advice. If you are injured or are simply not strong enough to hang on with your feet in the air, don’t force it.

WHEN YOU CAN AND WHEN YOU CAN’T TEXT AN EX Breaking up is hard, it’s never easy. After you’ve invested time in a person, formed a meaningful bond, and gotten used to having them as a major part of your life, it’s hard to entirely cut ties. It’s no surprise, then, that the urge to text an ex can be almost unbearable. You may feel the need to give them a piece of your mind, or tell them you miss them or see how they’re doing. Everyone deals with breakups in their own way. Some people feel more at peace after sending every thought that crosses their mind to their former partner. Some only get the urge after one too many glasses of wine. Why do we feel the urge to text an ex? Many people can’t stop thinking about their ex, it can become obsessive and for some it eases a feeling of loneliness. Others, who truly loved their ex, can’t let go. Some are afraid of getting out there again, so they keep their former relationship alive as a way of staying involved and not feeling single again. One way to finally let go of your beloved ex, is to begin dating, enjoy the dating

process, and replace your ex with someone who values you and who suits you better. The key factor is the readiness to (finally!) let go. When thinking about someone constantly, it can be hard not to get the urge to text them, looking forward is the healthy thing to do: Everyone holds on for a different length of time. Some people avoid the pain of loss and grief by texting their ex. Others who have been deeply hurt may close the vault to their heart. When is it ok to text your ex? It is acceptable to text your ex when you genuinely feel that it might be a good idea to reconcile. Signs of this include that they or you express and demonstrate genuine accountability and remorse for having hurt you (generally it’s a hurt that ruptures and destroys a relationship). Another sign is that your ex demonstrates change with continuity. Anyone can change for a moment, but being flexible and sustaining real change is the key we’re looking for. Only you can gauge your own emotional state, feelings change moment to moment. If it feels right, go for it. The key to reaching out to an ex is to expect absolutely nothing. Expectations lead to let downs and disappointments. I’m a firm

believer in direct communication between two people. If someone has treated you with courtesy and respect, you’re fine to proceed with them, but always expect reciprocity. When should you not reach out? It’s no longer acceptable to text once you discover that your ex has a new relationship. This is pivotal in the grieving process. The ending and death of the fantasy of reunion must be faced, and the true grieving process begins. The depth of pain of the loss of love is usually felt at this point, and recovery is quicker because time has passed during the fantasy/hope phase. Learning that your ex has a new relationship forces you to move on. Most people feel an empty, lonely, sad feeling after a breakup, it is normal to feel this way. Others may feel relief, especially when the relationship has been filled with conflicts, anger and fighting. Moving forward, the answer is self-awareness. One must be honest with oneself at all times, including when we experience our deepest pain. The best relationships form when you are a whole to yourself, then you can be a half to someone else.

TECH IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR GOOD SAFETY HABITS No matter what systems you have installed, it is important to never neglect your personal safety habits. The home security market has seen a dizzying array of new products and developments in recent years, all with the aim of keeping us safe. But none of these products could ever replace basic and responsible personal safety habits.

“We too often have to respond to incidents where someone might have installed a brand-new and top of the range home security system, but suffered a theft or break-in because they left one of the house’s windows standing open or forgot to close the garage door. This is essentially the issue we face – the presence of sophisticated technology does not mean we can forget our own personal responsibility,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT.

Hattingh says this level of awareness should also extend to your street and your suburb. “If you see anything that seems to be out of the ordinary or to be amiss, it is best to immediately alert your security company, the local neighbourhood watch, or the police.” Safety habits combined with the best that technology offers – such as CCTV cameras, infrared and passive sensors, and remote monitoring – makes for the ultimate weapon in the fight against crime. Hattingh lists some of these safety habits to remember: •

Lock all doors and windows all the time. This applies to your house, your car and any outbuildings on your property. This applies whether you are at home or not. If you have an alarm system installed, make sure it is always armed.

Make it look like someone is home. Use automated lighting, either with timers or using your home security system. Keep a car in the driveway. Have a neighbour pick up packages. Close curtains on the ground

One of the best ways to make the maximum impact, she explains, is to be aware of your surroundings.

“Whether you are driving somewhere, walking in a mall, or going for a run – make sure you are paying attention, and that you avoid any unnecessary risks. Remove anything from the equation that could distract you, such as headphones or your cellphone.”

24

level so no one can see in your windows. Keep valuable items out of sight. Never leave keys, wallets, cell-phones or any other small items on a table or anywhere close to a window.

Cut back any trees or shrubs that provide cover for burglars, then make it a habit to keep them trimmed. This means around your house and around any outbuildings someone might be tempted to break into.

Talk to your family and friends, and get to know your neighbours. Make sure your loved ones remember what they can do to stay safe, and make sure you share these tips with people who live in your street.

SET ACHIEVABLE FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS Most of us set our goals too high when we make New Year’s resolutions and so give up because they seem unachievable. Caught up in the excitement of a New Year’s Eve party, possibly fuelled by a few glasses of champagne or a need to impress, we commit to running the Comrades, climbing Kilimanjaro or learning the saxophone. Then, the first agonising run round the block, gasping holiday ascent of Table Mountain or cheek-aching, strangled warble brings us crashing back to reality. Mostly we don’t keep trying. The same is probably true of our financial resolutions. Lofty plans to get out of debt, start saving and maybe make some investments soon get shelved after a long, belt-tightening January. Soon we find ourselves reverting to old habits, buying things we don’t need and missing repayments when money gets tight. DirectAxis Financial Services asked its experts to come up with some simple suggestions that could help struggling South Africans take better control of their finances. “We picked easy-to-do things that should help you feel more in control and will also improve your financial profile. It’s not a definitive list and not all the ideas will work for everyone, but even

choosing one or two should help,” says Marlies Kappers, chief marketing officer. Take a hard look in the (credit) mirror Your credit score is the way the financial world sees you, but most South Africans have no idea what their credit score is, much less what to do about it. You are entitled to one free credit report a year from one of the credit bureaus. A better credit score will mean the financial world will see you as being more financially responsible and less of a risk. This means they’ll be more inclined to do business with you and may even offer you better terms, such as lower interest rates. Be dependable Paying your debts on time will earn you a good financial reputation which will be reflected in your credit score. Regularly checking your credit profile will give you a good idea of what your financial commitments are each month. You can then assess these and decide which debts are best to reduce first. Usually these are short-term debts with the

highest interest rates. By paying these off first you may also save yourself some money over the long term. Set a budget It’s not as hard as it sounds. As with many things that seem daunting, getting started is often the hardest part. It might be as simple as setting a grocery budget. Make a list of what you need each week or month, estimate the cost and set that as your budget. Not only will this give you a realistic idea of just how much you spend on shopping but should also reduce the temptation to put unnecessary items in the trolley. Once you’ve mastered your shopping budget you can try to draw up a household budget. The easiest way to do this is to draw a line down the centre of a piece of paper. On the left list all your income, such as salary, money you may earn from freelance work or property rentals. On the right list all your expenses such as bond repayments, rates, living expenses, transport, cell phone costs. Try to be as detailed and honest as possible.

Replacing your old windows and doors with our REHAU uPVC double glazed products brings many important benefits: •

• Enhanced security - our products are tough, and fitted with modern locking systems for increased burglar resistance •

• Noise reduction - cut out that traffic noise, barking dogs or noisy neighbours!

DEVELOPING CHILDREN’S EQ IS CRUCIAL FOR FUTURE SUCCESS IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD Emotional intelligence (EQ) is increasingly becoming a greater determinant of future success across all spheres of life than IQ, an expert says, adding that it is more important than ever before that EQ is nurtured from a young age. “The introduction of social media into our lives as well as the lives of our children has created an environment where people are required to efficiently manage a variety of relationships simultaneously and successfully,” says Chris Van Niekerk, head at Founders Hill College, part of Africa’s largest private education provider, ADvTECH. He says the acquisition of knowledge, while obviously important, is less critical in the current information age, and that the emphasis for success has more to do with what can be done with the knowledge at hand. “This requires the ability to collaborate across

gender divides, age gaps, cultural differences, and the like. A well-developed EQ will position a child well to positively engage 21st century challenges in adolescence and ultimately, adulthood.” Van Niekerk says that emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to understand our own feelings, as well as the feelings of those around us. This includes concepts of self-awareness, empathy and dealing sensitively with other people. “Our potential, and that of our children, will only come to fruition if our cognitive abilities are enhanced, complemented and communicated through a well-developed EQ which entails sound self-awareness as well as the awareness of the emotions of those around us.” “This places an exciting, but onerous burden on us as parents and educators to ensure that our children are not only well versed in the Social,

Natural and Commercial Sciences, among others, but also have the emotional savvy to manage their own feelings and behaviours, while being able to understand the feelings of others.” He advises parents who are serious about prioritising the EQ of their children to start incorporating strategies to develop it in their daily lives. There are a few practical ways in which to do this: • Role model the behaviour that you expect in your children. • Normalise talking about emotions. • Acknowledge positive and negative emotions in your child. • Teach your children that feelings and behaviour are in fact separable. Negative emotions do not have to lead to inappropriate behaviour. • Keep your expectations, and subsequent guidance, age appropriate. • Love them unconditionally. COST-EFFECTIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME

By: Marlies Kappers and Lindsay Beck

Costly renovations might not get you the return you want when you sell your house, so if you’re getting a loan for home improvements consider the smaller, cosmetic changes that will make your property more appealing. “Most estate agents agree that there’s a ceiling on prices in most neighbourhoods, so there’s a real risk that you could struggle to get your money back on a massive renovation,” says Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at financial services provider, DirectAxis. This is particularly true in difficult economic times. Personal indulgences, such as jacuzzis, are also on the list of no-nos. You might think that champagne-fuelled midnight soaks are the best thing ever, but prospective buyers may see just another hassle that needs to be cleaned, maintained or repaired. Here are some ideas about cost-effective renovations and how to go about them from Lindsay Beck, Pam Golding branch manager for the southern suburbs. Create curb appeal One of the first things to consider is what estate agents call curb appeal. It’s what makes people decide to stop at a show house or drive past. A freshly painted exterior, neat garden and clean windows all point to a house that is cared for and consequently one that’s more likely to attract buyers.

Best of all creating curb appeal generally requires more of an investment in elbow grease than cash. Don’t bite off more than you can chew Have a plan and tackle one thing at a time. This way you can keep your projects achievable and won’t face the situation where you’ve taken on too much, have run out of money and end up trying to sell a house with half-painted rooms. Repair before renovating Keeping on top of home maintenance and spotting potential problems before they become expensive can be just as important as renovations. A shiny new kitchen may not be enough to offset broken gutters and a green swimming pool. Keep it simple A fresh coat of paint can go a long way towards improving a room and is a lot cheaper than remodelling or breaking down walls. Similarly sanding down and re-varnishing wooden floors is more cost effective than laying new ones. Small changes can sometimes make a big difference.

Be clean and tidy Bathrooms and kitchens get a lot of wear and tear which can result in them looking tatty and unhygienic. Regularly cleaning tiles and grouting is a chore, but a lot less expensive than having to replace them. The same applies to shower floors and remember to look up and check the ceiling for mould. Spend your money sensibly. A new shower curtain may cost you a couple of rand, but an old, grubby one could cost you the sale. Avoid surprises Getting your house inspected for electrical compliance, rising damp, dry rot or borer beetle before you sell may seem counter intuitive, but if you have any doubt it’s better to know about any problems before the contract is on the table. Leaving it until then could mean losing money on the sale or the buyers walking away. It also means you can fix problems on your own terms in your own time rather than when you’re under pressure. Even if there’s nothing wrong, having the certificates demonstrates that you’ve been diligent about maintaining the house. Think of it as having a full-service history for your house.
